Mineral sands mining for ilmenite, rutile and zircon has disturbed over 1000 ha of prime farmland in Virginia (USA) since 1997 and additional areas are likely to be disturbed in Virginia and North Carolina (USA) over the next 15 years. Full-scale mining operations at the Old Hickory Project in Virginia were initiated in 1997 by Iluka Resources Inc. and restoration protocols have continued to evolve in response to a variety of economic, technical and social issues. Early on, the return of these lands to agricultural row-crop production was complicated by vertical stratification of tails + slimes and lateral variability in soil physical conditions in the reclaimed pits and by limited topsoil return. Virginia Tech and Iluka have worked cooperatively with all stakeholders for over 20 years to review the pre-existing research base, conduct new and innovative site-specific research and thereby provide reasonable expectations of post-mining soil productivity levels. In 2004, Virginia Tech, Iluka Resources and a local leaseholder (Carraway-Winn family) agreed to jointly manage a 45 ha research demonstration farm where the long-term effects of alternative soil reconstruction practices are being rigorously monitored for both row crops (corn and wheat) and forage production. All mined land crop yields are also compared to an adjacent undisturbed exceptional quality prime farmland soil. Row crop yields between 2005 and 2010 were significantly above county average yields (regulatory target level) and approximately 75 - 80 per cent of undisturbed adjacent prime farmlands. The state regulatory authority has recently relaxed its position on the necessity of topsoil return versus use of topsoil substitutes based on appropriate on-site research results and the ability of the reclaimed soils to meet comparative local county crop yield targets. This cooperative effort allows all clientele groups to objectively assess the post-mining productivity of these mined lands while providing an invaluable educational opportunity for the mining industry. The use of geological data for optimisation of operating plants has become a significant part of the modern process mindset. The underlying principle is to convert spatial geological data into metallurgical information to drive production and mine planning, blast design, blending strategies and plant set-up. Increasingly the process designer is required to interface with geological and mining staff to propose the best investment strategy for a project’s benefit.The geometallurgical model development for the Zafranal copper-gold project commenced in March, 2010, several months after the start of a major drilling campaign by AQM Copper Inc. The initial evaluation stage required review of historical Teck RC data to determine areas of metallurgical interest within the project. As drilling transitioned from RC to diamond drilling, core that was considered representative of the resource was selected and subjected to MLA mineralogy analysis. When coupled with sequential copper analyses this allowed calibration of an assay derived mineralogy model, allowing process concept options and a preliminary test program to be developed. This Phase 1 test program provided a preliminary process design, operating costs and anticipated concentrate grades and recoveries. Both this data and resource estimation were used to generate a preliminary Whittle pit optimisation based on maximising net smelter return, which in turn fed into a preliminary mine plan. The preliminary mine plan, in conjunction with geological logs and core results was used to develop a phase 2 metallurgical test program, where variability tests were conducted throughout the resource and composites formed to investigate specific years of the mine plan in locked cycle flotation. In addition comminution tests were modelled against geometallurgical domains allowing comminution components values to be calculated for 36?000 m of core. A flotation geometallurgical model was developed and incorporated into the resource model allowing concentrate grades and recoveries to be estimated on a block-by-block basis.

Randgold Resources’ Loulo-Gounkoto Complex is one of the largest gold mining operations in Mali, West Africa. The mine, which is situated on the western border with Senegal, treats more than 4 Mt/a of ore through a conventional three-stage crushing and ball milling circuit followed by a carbon-in-leach plant. Ore supply is achieved by a combination of open pit and underground mining, with the majority of the ore supply sourced from the Gara and Yalea underground mines situated approximately 2 km and 6 km respectively from the gold plant.In 2011, Randgold Resources commissioned Golder Associates to perform an evaluation study for providing structural backfill to both the Gara and Yalea underground mines using the current gold plant tailings. The test work performed as part of the evaluation study concluded the need for a tailings cycloning and dewatering facility capable of producing slurry at a solids concentration of 65 per cent with a particle size distribution that had minimum 25 per cent passing 20 µm and less than 5 per cent of -5 µm material. Tailings desliming was required to ensure a consistent feed quality to the paste preparation plants and to ensure that the system would be capable of handling variation in the feed composition from the gold plant.WorleyParsons, previously TWP Projects, was contracted by Randgold Resources to complete the engineering design for the slurry preparation plant, whilst Golder Associates was retained to complete the engineering design of the two paste preparation plants.This paper discusses the test work, design considerations and engineering design of the slurry preparation plant, termed the ‘intermediate plant’, as well as all ancillary facilities required for the delivery of the deslimed slurry to the paste preparation plants located at the two underground mines.CITATION:Swanepoel, M, du Toit, G and Gillot, P L, 2014. There are numerous causes of speculative mineral resource and reserve inflation. Traditionally, these are linked to issues of data accuracy or misinterpretation, the use of overly optimistic estimation parameters or assumptions, an absence of independent expert verification, or the simple pressure to increase company value, covert or otherwise. Owing to its subjective nature, classification of resources and reserves remains an opaque process. Of necessity, Competent Persons rely on personal heuristic interpretations, ideally underpinned by appropriate estimation and classification experience across commodity and deposit types. Whereas independent verification of individual resource and reserve statements remains impractical, publicly available data can be interrogated for potential category inflation, particularly when viewed with exploration expenditure statistics included in annual company reports. Abrupt changes in category tonnages and market capitalisation without concomitant expenditure can aid in outlier detection. Consequently, a comparison of common exploration and resource reporting parameters offers a basis for risk assessing classification robustness, over time. In this introductory study, an analysis of globally listed companies was undertaken over a multi-year period, examining base and precious metal projects in both preproduction and operational asset classes. From these, a series of exploratory decision tree trigger points were generated against which target companies were anonymously identified and risk-ranked.

The results from metallurgical test programs are used in feasibility studies for design of new plants and brownfield expansions, in long term mine plans, and to make decisions in an operating plant. There are many elements which contribute to a well-constructed test work program. Ultimately, understanding the accuracy and precision of the test work results is critical to ensuring good decision-making at various phases of a project.Every resource drilling and associated assaying program will have a quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) component, however this often seems to be overlooked in metallurgical testing programs. The principles of “international standard” or “certified reference material” samples and replicate/duplicate testing can be applied to metallurgical programs, although there are metallurgical-specific considerations in both generating and analysing the data.This paper will describe the QA/QC program carried out within the Olympic Dam geometallurgy program. It will present results in the form of case studies from ten years of testing of replicates and bulk reference samples for industry-standard comminution tests as well as laboratory flotation and leaching tests. The objective of this paper is to assess the accuracy and applicability of recent state-of-art methods such as the machine learning algorithms (MLA) for mineral resource estimation. Conventional methods such as geostatistics have been predominantly used in the mining industry for this purpose with varying success. Recent advances in the use of MLA have provided a fresh approach to obtain improved accuracy in the estimation of mineral resources. Two MLA methods: the neural network (NN) and the support vector machine (SVM) have been used to estimate a polymetallic ore deposit in Alaska.The general characteristic of SVM and NN emphasises the fact that they can approximate any multivariate non-linear relation among variables. Although neural network models are able to capture the nonlinear spatial relationships that may be present in the data, they are usually difficult to optimise under sparse data settings. Of the various NN alternatives, despite their effectiveness, the model selection and estimation process is typically difficult as it involves solving complex integration and optimisation of parameters. In support vector modelling (SVM), estimating of parameters involves optimisation of a convex cost function. The working principle of SVM makes it robust against noisy and extreme value data. At the same time, it can capture the spatial distribution of ore grade more effectively with careful modelling and selection of SVM parameters.The outcome of the MLA methods were compared to those of the geostatistical ordinary kriging (OK) application to study their generalisation ability. The comparison was made using the following goodness of fit criteria: mean-squared error; mean absolute error; mean error; and coefficient of determination. The results indicated that the MLA methods may improve the predictability of ore deposits and thereby reduce the inherent risk in mineral resource estimation.

The most critical variable in the successful establishment of the Murrin Murrin Heap Leach plant was the effective agglomeration of the Ni laterite ore. This paper describes the test work undertaken to establish the key agglomeration parameters including state of the art testing and analysis procedures. These parameters were then utilised to establish the key design and operational concepts for the world’s first commercial scale Ni laterite heap leach. Following the technical and economic success of the operation, the actual operational data is compared back to the original test work data.

Malmberget is a sublevel caving mine owned and operated by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB), a Swedish state-owned iron ore mining company, in northern Sweden. The mine has an annual iron ore production of approximately 15 Mtpa. The current strategy foresees an expansion which will increase the mine’s depth considerably. Ventilation and air conditioning modelling for the planned expansion is ongoing. One of the most influential parameters for ventilation planning anddesign for a deep mine is geothermal gradient, which is crucial for the design of the refrigeration system. It is determined through virgin rock temperature (VRT) measurements carried out at various depth below the surface. This paper details these measurements and the determination of geothermal gradient for Malmberget Mine for the expansion study, which were necessitated by thelack of information for the focus depth and area.

This study data has been collected on a three-month period from November 2020 to January 2021 and based on three different pits: Vindaloo Main, Vindaloo Central and Bouere. Both pits having specific geotechnical and geological properties. Vindaloo Main, VIM, and Central, VIC, have the same mineral composition as volcanic tuff with felsic intrusion or monzodiorite, both rock mass is fractured with small joint. Geotechnically the uniaxial compressive strength UCS between 200 to 300 Mpa, Young’s Modulus 110 Gpa and Poisson’s ratio between 0.1 to 0.2. Bouere pit is basically made of volcanic tuff stock works as intrusive, UCS between 200 to 300 Mpa, Young’s Modulus 103 Gpa and Poisson’s ratio between 0.2 to 0.3. The first step of this study was to collect various data from mining operations around the drilling and blasting inputs. This was based around the different scenario of drilling parameters and the outcomes on the blasting, and how they impact load and haul operations and productivities of excavators from the heave to the last flitch. In most cases surface photos of the blast do not represent the overall fragmentation in the blast volume. Photos of the different flitches will not show only the effect of blast, as the loading operation generating more fragmentation by applying weight on the muck pile. Then the record of the different material uses for feeding. The last part of the analysis is the physical data from process plant such as particle size, throughput rate, both for the crusher and the mill, per pit and material and the specific Bond Work index (BWI). Fine particle quantity production is also a key point as is one direct indicator of milling performance. In overall, making link to BWI can influence at each stage of the mining to the processing operation. Drill and blast constitute a high cost in hard rock mining and trying to reduce these costs without an overview of all the integrated processes and context could end up by cost relocating to other activities in the process. However, the cost associated to size reduction builds exponentially as the particle size becomes smaller.

The Challenger Gold deposit was discovered in 1995 by Dominion Mining Ltd in a remote western area of the Gawler Craton in South Australia. Mine development commenced in 2002 with initial production from an open pit supplemented by ore from a very small adjacent auxiliary pit. Development of the underground mine commenced in 2004. The orebody plunge of just less than 30 degrees requires careful attention to mine design. Production from the M1 orebody, with less than 800 ounces per vertical metre (ovm) and very limited æsurgeÆ capacity, requires careful scheduling and implementation to ensure continuity of ore feed for milling. Initial production results from underground stopes included more dilution than anticipated. The narrow, high-grade zones proved to have much more complex geometry than early interpretations had indicated. Greatly improved understanding of the mineralisation controls resulted in important changes being made to the underground mine design and method. Coupled with careful control of development and drilling and blasting practices, this resulted in an immediate reduction in dilution and high recoveries of the resource. The benefits of these changes flowed through in the 2005/06 financial year, resulting in a 150 per cent increase in gold production to 108 080 oz and a sharp reduction in cash operating costs to A$280/oz. This was followed in 2006/07 with production of 108 91 oz of gold at an operating cost of $309/oz and in 2007/08 with 109 326 oz of gold at $367/oz. Production to June 2008 has been mainly from the M1 orebody, with the lowest stoping to date on the 580 m Level (615 m below surface) above development mining on the 520 Level. The rate of vertical advance of mining this orebody has averaged 150 vertical metres per year. The increased current combined JORC compliant resource and reserve position of over one million ounces, now includes the M2 and M3 orebodies with a current total average gold inventory up to 1400 - 1500 ovm. Exploration has intersected other shoots and all shoots are open at depth. The adjacent M2 and M3 orebodies are being developed for stoping. The narrow width of these zones from 1 m up to 4 m will require continued focus on ore zone definition, accurate development and careful drill and blast practice. In addition, to minimise cost increases in the current period of rapidly escalating labour, equipment, consumables and energy costs, high productivities will need to be maintained to allow the established rapid mining advance to continue at low unit costs.

This paper describes how Brisbane-based PanAust Limited develops process control strategies that are implemented at all operations and are used in functional descriptions for plant upgrades and new projects.The process control strategies are determined by operating management philosophies designed to maximise returns from the company’s assets.The approach is endorsed in the project planning and design phases to ensure facilities and equipment that form the major production assets are fit for purpose and capable of enabling the production managers and operators of the projects to maximise shareholder returns.PanAust’s process control approach has been to develop sets of process control standards which focus on two key areas. The first area covers hardware requirements and architecture, software objectives, control models and individual loop tuning methods. The second area defines control room layout, graphic standards and the alarm philosophy. The application of these standards in a new plant or upgrade decreases the time required to achieve design capacity and optimal performance.The PanAust process control strategy changes the operator’s role from one that controls a number of individual loops to one that sets the control objectives of the processing plant. To achieve optimal performance, all the process areas of the plant are analysed to identify opportunities to improve throughput, recovery and stability. Once a key opportunity is identified, a process control strategy is developed which defines the objective of the control, its functionality and how an operator will interact with it. After development of the control model the operators assist engineers to test and debug it. When a coalmine fire occurs, it is crucial to judge the developing trends inside the fire area by analysing the changes of gas concentration in order to formulate the proper rescue measures. At present, few researchers have focused on the relationship between the changing trend of gas product and basic characteristics of fire in the coal fire extinguishing process. To study the relationship of basic characteristics of coalmine fire during the extinguishing process, an experimental platform for coal combustion in a confined space was built, and gas production, flame image and coal temperature during the extinguishing process were monitored and analysed by an online continuous gas analysis instrument, camera and thermocouple. Research shows that during the burning phase of the coal sample in the confined space, the flame zone decreases gradually due to insufficient gas supply. The size of the flame zone fluctuates and shares a positive correlation with CO concentration, while sharing a negative correlation with O2 and CO2 concentrations. Then, in the extinguishing phase, the increasing rate of CO2 concentration and the decreasing rate of O2 concentration both decrease gradually, but CO concentration would rise for a period before it eventually decreases. Whereas mine reconciliation is a well-established month-end process for most modern mining operations, the resource sector has yet to endorse uniform reporting factors against which model accuracy and metal recovery can be formally assessed. Logically, any comprehensive reconciliation framework should facilitate comparison between period reserve, mine and mill and production figures. Historically, Parker’s F Series ratios (Parker, 2012) are often used in some form by mine operators, although they are rarely shared externally, as formal definitions have yet to be accepted. This paper presents a structural extension to the reconciliation process, wherein resource ratios (R Series factors) are used to quantify the long-term impact of the information effect, together with dilution and ore loss. A case study from the El Limón Guajes (ELG) Mine Complex in Mexico is used to demonstrate how an R Factor Series can be implemented to facilitate operation optimisation, over and above conventional F Series reconciliation treatments. This approach is applicable to any mining operation.

CaF2 has been a common constituent in a wide variety of welding fluxes, including those used for submerged arc welding (SAW). The widespread use of CaF2 stems from its role in lowering the liquidus temperature as well as the viscosity of the molten slag that covers the weld pool. However, the harmful effect of fluoride evaporation from molten flux, on the environment as well as the health of the users is becoming increasingly evident over the years. This has led to increasing attention towards reducing the CaF2 concentration in the fluxes. The fluoride-free formulations face the challenging requirement to maintain the thermo-physical properties (viscosity, liquidus temperature etc) like those observed in fluoride-containing fluxes. In the present work, three fluxes with compositions in the CaO-MnO-SiO2-Al2O3 system have been identified as promising alternatives to the CaF2-rich fluxes. However, the thermo-physical properties of any such flux need to be comparable to CaF2-based commercial SAW fluxes before it can be adopted for regular use. The single hot thermocouple technique (SHTT) has been used by several researchers in the past as a tool for observing the melting and solidification characteristics of fluxes. This device has been developed in the present work and is used to characterise the melting behaviour of the fluxes. The measured solidus and liquidus temperatures from SHTT were compared with the results from differential thermal analysis (DTA) and simulations using the FactSage™ software for a comprehensive understanding. In spite of having a slight deviation in the measured values from the multiple techniques, the results obtained from these multiple methods show that the selected compositions could be potential CaF2 free alternative welding fluxes.

"The requisite for maintaining optimal carbon concentration levels in a carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit is of paramount importance in the prevention of gold losses. The process’s ability to recover gold from the aqueous phase is primarily dependent on the carbon loading profile of the CIL train.Newmont Boddington Gold (NBG) have over 2015 tested the Mintek online carbon concentration wmeter (C2 Meter) suitability for effective carbon concentration measurements in their CIL circuit compared to the standard method where the readings are taken twice a shift by the operations staff. The C2 meter works by passing a 1MHz ultrasonic signal through a slurry containing carbon where there is a relationship between the carbon concentration and the attenuation of that signal.It also highlighted another area where the C2 meter could be implemented at NBG whereby the instrument can be as a cautionary device for carbon losses in place of carbon safety screens.Citation:McCamley, C, 2016. The Fosterville Gold mine is located approximately 20km to the East of Bendigo in central Victoria. The gold at Fosterville occurs as solid solution within disseminated arsenopyrite and pyrite. The Fosterville ore bodies contain various amounts of native carbon in the form of bituminous coal. This carbon (Non-Carbonate Carbon or NCC) has been the predominant mechanism for gold loss from the processing facility through”preg-robbing”.Processing of the Fosterville ore is achieved initially through crushing, grinding and flotation to extract the sulphides. The sulphide concentrate is oxidized using Bacterial Oxidation, before being leached in a conventional CIL circuit. A high portion of the native carbon (NCC) in the mine ore is naturally hydrophobic in nature, and subsequently reports to the flotation concentrate stream, and ultimately onto the CIL circuit. This NCC has a notable preg-robbing ability. Treatment of Black Shale ores, which have elevated NCC levels, has historically resulted in CIL recoveries as low as 35%, with around 60-80% of the gold loss from the leach circuit attributed to preg-robbing.Standard technologies for dealing with a carbonaceous leach feed have been trialed with limited success. The discovery of the significance of heat on leach recoveries, triggered extensive testwork on a range of leach feed and tails samples. Pilot plant testing demonstrated that “Heated Leaching” of the CIL tails was the best process with an average recovery increase of 7.5% being achieved. Following a successful pilot study, an engineering feasibility study was completed by Minerva Engineering, and the project economics determined. With strong recovery gains evident and a predicted project payback of 1-1.5 years, approval for the installation of the full scale plant was granted. Detailed design commenced in September 2008 with installation commencing in January 2009. The circuit was successfully commissioned in April 2009.Following commissioning, the Heated Leach circuit has achieved recovery gains of 4-14%, and has proven itself to be a significant contributor to the overall plant performance.

The gravimetric integral Knudsen effusion method was used to measure cadmium activity values in binary liquid In-Cd alloys in the range 523 to 573 K. The activity measurements together with other studies from the literature indicate that special bonding conditions exist in the melts near a composition corresponding to InCd3. Sound velocities in In-Cd melts were also measured using a precision pulse-echo over- lap method in the range 404 to 953 K. The frac- tional deviation of experimental and ideal isentropic compressibilities at 623K shows a functional dependence on composition with a pronounced maximum near the composition 75 at.%.

The risk assessment of mining projects is directly related to the possible failure in estimating, and as estimates are made from sampling results, this activity should be done in a judicious and planned manner, to avoid surprises at the start of project operation. Pierre Gy’s (1995) sampling theory addresses the issue of sample representativeness and indicates that only the certainty that the sampling procedure was performed with quality may result in samples being recognised as representative. To validate the representativeness of samples from sampling boreholes selected for studies of mineral processing, the team of geology resource assessment of VALE has proposed a methodology based on the use of statistical analysis tools, which in addition to considering the spatial distribution of these samples in deposit, considers whether they are representative of the populations studied, allowing the geologist to make a quick analysis of sample representativeness.
