Two methods of calibrating the parameters K and Alpha for use in Gy’s formula for the fundamental sampling error were investigated. Approximately 480 kg of broken ore from Harmony’s Target gold mine in South Africa was used to compile the replicate samples for two experiments. The duplicate series analysis (DSA) and segregation free analysis (SFA) methods differ in terms of their approach to recovering the sized materials required for the calibration procedure. In this experiment the DSA method split off six more-or-less equal masses of material from a 75 kg lot that was successively crushed to finer and finer fragment sizes. The sublots so formed were split into 32 samples and fire assayed for gold. The SFA method used approximately 250 kg of broken ore crushed to 95 per cent passing 2.50 cm, which was then passed through successively finer screens until a sublot of less than 0.0075 cm was obtained. Each of the 15 sublots obtained in this way were split using a riffle splitter into 32 samples that were fire assayed. A total of 672 fire assays were used in these experiments. The sampling parameters K and Alpha were used for the compilation of a nomogram and to calculate the gold liberation size of the ores. While there are no definitive results in terms of the actual gold grain sizes against which the calculated sizes can be compared, it appears that the DSA method produces more acceptable results.CITATION:Minnitt, R, 2014. OneSteel Whyalla’s grate-kiln-cooler pelletising plant was commissioned in 1968 processing haematite feed from the local South Middleback Ranges mining area. The existence of a magnetite resource beneath the haematite ore at Iron Duke had been known for some time. In 2004, a decision was made to covert the primary iron source for the Whyalla steelworks from haematite to magnetite – known as project magnet. The intent of the project was to convert the feed to the steelworks from haematite to magnetite and to free up the remaining haematite resource for export. The pelletising plant was cut over to a magnetite feed in 2007.The thermochemical differences of magnetite compared to haematite are threefold:1. the introduction of an exothermic reaction during conversion of magnetite to haematite,2. the absence of bound water which existed within the haematite, and3. lower gangue content requiring lower fluxing levels and therefore lower calcination energy demand.The combination of these differences results in a significantly different induration requirement for magnetite as compared to haematite. The change therefore required extensive research and test work to design modifications to the furnace and to ensure appropriate risk mitigation for the Whyalla steelworks.Preliminary pot-grate test work was performed to define the pellet chemistry and confirm the suitability of the magnetite to produce pellets suitable for the OneSteel blast furnace. A heating curve was developed by use of computer-based heat and mass balance modelling. Extensive pilot scale grate-kiln-cooler test work was then performed to confirm the heating curve and to verify and fine-tune the pellet properties. Computation fluid dynamics was used to design the physical changes to the furnace required to achieve the proposed heating curve.Following installation of an additional preheat zone, including a wall and dilution air fans, into the preheating furnace, and installation of an additional wall into the cooler, the modified furnace was commissioning in December 2007. The plant performed as expected during commissioning with the actual heating curve matching the proposed curve and the produced pellets within blast furnace specifications.

One of the regular tasks of geotechnical and mining engineers is the measurement and management of deformation in underground excavations. Although several methods are used to do so, the incumbent methodologies for monitoring deformation and ground support serviceability are limited to the use of visual observations or measurements at discrete points, resulting in a qualitative assessment only. The introduction of LiDAR technology allows a quantitative assessment across the entire excavation volume and its rock surface, by collecting a full three-dimensional image of the entirety of an excavation such as an underground drive, decline, or a tunnel. Comparisons between epochs of complete 3D data coverage allows for change detection over time that doesn’t feature otherwise typical omissions. The implementation of regular scanning has shown to be highly advantageous for mines with swelling or squeezing ground, but also at mines with rapid deformation. Despite the LiDAR potential, its adoption has been slow. A key reason for that is that working with point clouds is foreign to most geotechnical engineers. Point clouds have long been the realm of surveyors, but to fully adopt their use in geomechanics requires retraining, upskilling, and devotion by the individuals and the company. Sites are already stretched, so often there are insufficient resources to be applied to bringing the new technology into use. The solution to this hurdle is to partner with subject matter experts to achieve the desired high-quality outcomes without the commitment of time by geotechnical personnel. This paper presents a new solution of fully automated raw LiDAR point cloud data processing that not only enables geotechnical engineers to avoid having to learn unrelated skills by allowing for deformation monitoring without associated training or expertise, but it also provides instant reporting results as well as a sophisticated database with features otherwise not available. All data processing time and effort is completely replaced by an automated process which at the same time opens up the opportunity to monitor many more excavation volumes at a higher frequency than is possible with conventional tools and methodology.

This paper discusses the recently com- pleted TBM-driven pressure tunnel at the Sand Bar Hydroelectric Power Project. The Sand Bar Project is a diversion scheme situated on the middle fork of the Stanislaus River in the Western Sierra Nevada, California, U.S.A. As part of the project, a 5.6 km long and 3.71 m diameter unlined pressure tunnel was bored by a Jarva TBM at the average rate of .37.5 m/ day. This report deals with construction aspects of the tunnel, including TBM performance, lining design, and remedial support measures. Correlations between TBM performance, geologic conditions, and rock properities are made, and the Contractor's mode of operations are discussed. Advance rate prediction, and the impact of these excellent advance rates attainable in hard rock using the new machines are discussed.

Metallurgists frequently use a small number of large samples to characterise expected mill performance, with the a priori assumption that these few samples are representative of the entire deposit. Geometallurgical sampling is becoming more prevalent as a way to use many smaller samples to indicate the expected recovery as part of the Mineral Resource or Ore Reserve estimation.Recent increases in prices for iron ore, together with the potential to produce high iron and low contaminant concentrates, have resulted in a renewed interest in recovering magnetite from banded iron formation and other deposits.Geometallurgical evaluation of magnetite involves approaches to sample preparation, sample analysis and resource estimation that are different from the methods commonly used for haematite iron ore. The magnetite sampling protocol is specific to each deposit, and is typically designed around a specific metallurgical flow sheet.The sampling protocol will typically include the use of Davis Tube analysis. The Davis Tube is a bench-scale test that is used for determining the mass magnetic recovery from a small amount of sample ground to a specific size. The magnetic concentrate may then be analysed and together with the mass magnetic recovery, may be used to simulate the expected mill recovery.During resource modelling, the mass magnetic recoveries and concentrate grades may be assigned to a block model using regressions with other chemical constituents, or may be estimated directly. For estimation of the concentrate grades, a weighting can be applied to account for the different mass magnetic recoveries from each sample and the impact of these differences on the concentrate estimates.This paper presents an overview of the use of metallurgical test data in resource evaluation for magnetite deposits.

As the Mount Morgan electrolytic chlorine plant is the first of its kind installed in Australia, and as the details of this method of producing chlorine have, up to the present time, been kept more or less secret all over the world, the author trusts that this paper may fill a gap in the technical literature of the subject.When an electric current is passed through a strong solution of sodium chloride the following reaction takes place -2 NaCl + 2 H 20 = 2 NaOH + C1 2 + H 2 Chlorine gas is liberated at the anode or entering pole of the current, while caustic soda and hydrogen are formed at the cathode or leaving pole of the current. If the two electrodes be simply immersed in a vessel containing salt and the current be turned on, there will be no result save slight smell of escaping chlorine gas. The passage of the current will have certainly split up the salt water according to the above equation, but as the products would be in juxtaposition they would immediately reunite, and the electrical energy would have been spent without any beneficial result having been obtained. "Column leach tests are used frequently to predict recoveries and reagent consumption for nickel laterite heap leaches. These column leaches often run for more than 100 days and therefore require long-term monitoring and data analysis to achieve the desired information. To minimise the cost and time required to obtain relevant information for nickel laterite heap leaching, we have developed a small-scale hydrogeometallurgical laboratory test to serve as a proxy to column, and by inference, heap leaching. In excess of 50 leach tests were conducted using four different small-scale proxy and column leach tests to compare predicted nickel recoveries, acid consumption and leach kinetics and to determine whether insight into potential scale-up effects can be obtained. The most promising proxy test was identified and we achieved a statistically significant recovery and acid consumption correlations between this test and the column leach tests. The accuracy of the small-scale tests was confirmed by column tests run on new laterite ores. The Mabilo copper-gold-magnetite skarn deposit is located in southern Luzon in the Paracale mineral district, where iron has been produced historically from several skarn deposits. Mabilo occurs in the south-west of the district and is distinct and significant because of its high grades of copper and gold compared to historical mines.The Mabilo licence surrounds the Venida prospect, where past small-scale mining has exploited iron, copper and gold mineralisation in oxidised skarn. A ground magnetic survey in 2007 defined a number of strong anomalies under Quaternary volcanic cover south of Venida. The property was acquired by Sierra Mining Ltd in 2011, the magnetic data were remodelled and drilling commenced in September 2012. Diamond drill hole MDH001 targeted the strongest anomaly, which was 500 m south of Venida and under 20 m of volcanic cover. It intersected 94 m with an average grade of 2.2 per cent copper, 1.6 g/t gold and 36.6 per cent iron. Subsequent drilling was targeted by magnetic modelling, incorporating magnetic susceptibility data from drill core, which resulted in a high percentage of successful drill holes.The mineralised skarn preferentially replaces a dipping limestone unit within an Eocene sequence dominated by volcanic siltstone and sandstone, metamorphosed to marble and hornfels in the aureole of a Miocene quartz-diorite intrusion. Skarn occurs discontinuously along the eastern and southern diorite contact, controlled by primary sedimentary facies variation, structural geometry, fault offsets and intrusive contacts.Coarse magnetite skarn with garnet and minor wollastonite and clinopyroxene contains variably abundant chalcopyrite and minor molybdenite. Magnetite skarn occurs in sharp contact with unaltered marble or grades into garnet skarn with minor chalcopyrite. Structurally controlled retrograde skarn alteration is strong to intense and is characterised by bornite, clinozoisite, iron carbonate and chlorite. The retrograde skarn is weakly overprinted by late-stage pyrite veining and brecciation associated with clay-silica alteration with arsenopyrite and tetrahedrite-tennantite.The quartz-diorite stock is interpreted as the source of the prograde skarn-forming and mineralising fluids. Late-stage porphyritic intrusions in the contact zone indicate continuing magmatism during uplift, when telescoping led to a high-level, high-sulfidation overprint. Transportation of iron ore from the mine to the plant is critical to business success. Ore from the mine may have to be transported across states, countries and even continents to get to the processing plant or export facilities, and ultimately to the client. Numerous transportation steps may result in potential logistical difficulties. Companies are continually seeking ways to increase production rates, decrease delivery times and reduce operating costs. Transportation cost is a major component of the total cost of mining iron ore and therefore requires effective use of transport systems.Bottlenecks in iron ore transport systems, due to material handling issues, can result in loss in profit in the order of millions of dollars per hour. Bottlenecks can be seen anywhere in the transport system where the desired flow rate cannot be achieved. These bottlenecks occur for various reasons such as increasing throughput in a transport system originally designed for a lower throughput resulting in plugged transfer chutes, changing material characteristics (eg finer material, increased moisture content), changing to a new type of material or blend that again alters handleability, or changes in operational philosophy due to equipment availability or process utilisation.Stockpiles may have limited live capacity such that an adequate amount of ore may not be readily reclaimed when required (eg to fill a complete train’s railcars). In bins and hoppers, material may discharge through a central flow channel resulting in the formation of a stable rathole, which can then collapse causing material to flood the downstream system and cause significant downtime for clean-up (eg railcars beneath train load outs). In transfer chutes, bottlenecks can be caused by pluggages or downtime required for the change-out of liners due to excessive wear. In ship loading, long settling or de-aeration time, or material exceeding its transportable moisture limit (TML) may result in further bottlenecks. These bottlenecks all have associated costs because of the need to address their causes and because of the lost opportunities for throughput.This paper will discuss how bulk material technology and proper understanding of material flow characteristics can be applied to mitigate bottlenecks. In this paper, the technology of producing fluxed pellets by using hydrated lime as binder instead of bentonite was carried out. The properties of the two types green balls (0.8 per cent bentonite and 2.0 per cent hydrated lime) were as follows: drop numbers of 4.8 - 5.0 times/0.5 m, compressive strength of 19.7 - 24.2 N/pellet and thermal shock temperature of 280° - 385°, respectively, under the same conditions of 1.5 per cent coke, 1.45 basicity and balling at 8.5 per cent moisture for 13 min in disc pelletiser. Comparing with bentonite as binder, the compressive strength of fired pellets with hydrated lime is elevated by 13.8 per cent and climbs up to 3113 N/pellet under the following conditions: preheating at 1050°C for ten minutes and fi ring at 1300°C for 15 min. In the mean time, the hydrated lime also improves the metallurgical performance of fired pellets. The reduction index was enhanced from 68.6 - 70.6 per cent, RDI+3.15+ increased from 90.1 to 98.8 per cent and reduction swelling index dropped from 22.4 - 7.4 per cent, respectively. The mineral compositions and microstructure of fi red pellets shows that the fired pellets containing 2.0 per cent possess more calcium ferrite and magnesium ferrite and compact microstructure, leading to the higher compressive strength.

The resource industry’s skills in managing physical hazards are showcased in their adaptability in this case study. Integrating the Critical Risk Management framework with organisational psychology, a mining company achieved a transformative breakthrough. They identified and assessed psychosocial hazards and established a sustained and risk based approach to managing these hazards within the workplace. This innovative approach encompasses strategic steps. The Broken Hill deposit is located in Australia in the far western region of New South Wales. The deposit was found in 1883 and has been mined continuously since its discovery. It is considered the largest lead, zinc, silver deposit that has been discovered in the world and originally contained around 340 Mt of ore at a grade of around 12 per cent lead, ten per cent zinc and 150 g/t silver. The material remaining in the deposit represents only a fraction (perhaps ten per cent) of the original resource. Several of the world’s largest mining companies can trace their origins to the Broken Hill Field. The remaining resources on the CML7 consist of two large lower grade resource lodes that have not been subject to mining, some scattered areas of zinc lode material and the pillars and remnants of the main lead lodes.The deposit occurs in metamorphic rocks of the Broken Hill Group a division of the Willyama Super Group contained within the Curnamona Craton. The Broken Hill Group rocks have undergone multiple phases of deformation. Metamorphism is granulite grade with major shears cutting through the deposit having been retrogressed to mica schists. The deposit lies in an antiform associated with the second phase of deformation.The resultant proposed mine is situated on Consolidated Mining Lease 7 (CML 7) which occupies a strike length of 3.6 km in the central part of the 7.8 km long footprint of the orebody. Underground mining on CML7 ceased in 1975 with surface mining of silver chlorides in the weathered zone continuing until 1991. CBH Resources has been continually working to define and evaluate the remaining resource since 2002. This work has included four surface drilling programs, two underground drilling programs, an exploration decline, enormous amounts of compilation of historical data and detailed three- dimensional (3D) modelling of historical mining and the resource lodes. It is currently planned to commence production at the Rasp Mine in late 2011. The operations will produce from previously unmined lodes and from remnants and pillars.This paper primarily aims to encapsulate the processes involved from information acquisition through to resource estimation and also to highlight some of the challenges encountered and the specific techniques and practices used to overcome them. Many of the experiences at Broken Hill are applicable to all brown field sites.

Production scheduling optimisation in open pit gold mining is a complex problem as it is driven by economic criteria reflecting particular economic interests of the concerned parties in the mining business. The contemporary organisational forms of mining, such as owner-operator and contract mining, are a good example of this relationship. These forms are complex and contradictory by nature as the contractor aims to get more waste at the beginning of mine exploitation in order to make more profit with favourable discounting effect over time, while the owner-operator aims to mine less waste at the beginning, which is a precondition for implementation of the mine planning principle of waste deferment and maximising the net present value (NPV) by accounting for the time value of money. Both forms are vital for the successful performance of the Australian mining industry as their competition is a powerful driving force of the market-oriented national economy.The present paper offers a new vision about the economic effectiveness of contract and owner-operator forms in surface gold mining through the prism of a novel production scheduling approach with a multistage stabilisation of the mining rate that implements the mine-to-market concept of modelling. The revival of the mining industry at Captain's Flat after a long period of years of inactivity has attracted attention to the importance of the ore-deposits of that field as potential sources of supply of lead and zinc. Mindful of the necessity for taking stock of the State's mineral resources, the Department of Mines of New South Wales as part of its programme of geological investigation, carried out a survey of the oredeposits and associated country rocks during 1938 and 1940.Surface geology was mapped in detail and all available exposures were examined and logged. Unfortunately, and this condition militates against the formulation of conclusions because of insufficiem.t data, some of the older workings, notably in Keating's Section, were inaccessible and the logging of levels and stopes is by no means as complete as could be desired. However, with the progress of development and exploration, further information of geological value will come to hand for incorporation in supplementary reports. It may be expected that, under such circumstances, modification of certain statements herein expressed may be necessary but it is not anticipated that any vital alteration will be occasioned.Within the State of, New South Wales, Captain's Flat ranks second to Broken Hill as a pqtem.tial producer of lead and zinc. In addition, large quantities of iron pyrites are available for the manufacture of sulphuric acid which finds application in the superphosphate industry.The mines are now controlled by an operating company known as Lake George Mines, Ltd., incorporated in New South Wales, the parent organisation being the Lake George Mining Gorporation Ltd., registered in London.Over £600,000 has been spent by the Company in exploration, mine development, surface plant, housing and water 'conservation, while the State' Government constructed a branch railway from Bungendore at a cost of £200,000. The various activities consequent upon these development and construction programmes and the prospect of employment in the industry has led to a rapid increase in the population of the township.The State, generally, has benefited to the extent of a substantial contribution to the relief of the unemployment problem, and it is hoped that reasonable permanency will be assured to some hundreds of workers for many years.

Permanent rock bolts used to support rock tunnels are required to perform for the design life of the structure as a minimum. Quality of installation is critical to the performance over the life of the rock bolt.This paper will present the findings from an in investigation into the integrity of rock bolts installed in an underground hydroelectric power station cavern and access tunnel. The 25?mm diameter rock bolts were installed 50 years ago, tensioned and post cement grouted. Due to a major machine upgrade the whole facility was subject to an asset survey. The owners are responsible for managing the risks associated with the failure of these rock bolts and ensuring the structural integrity of the tunnels and caverns is maintained to continue operations, protect machinery, assure production and more importantly maintain a safe working environment for all employees and visitors.To help manage risk a proactive approach is desired. To this end a test schedule using a non-destructive testing (NDT) system was carried out by Independent Integrity Testing Pty Ltd (i2t). The system used in this application was RokTel™. The system operates by applying a small axial impact to the rock bolt end and measuring the resultant acceleration response. The rock bolt characteristics affect the acceleration response.The data output from the system is analysed principally using Fourier Analysis (FFT) and sinusoidal waves. The energy generated in the bar, the rate of damping and changes in frequency are all assessed. Testing was carried out on 70 rock bolts within the tunnel and cavern. A selection were then over cored, photographed and documented. The data gathered from the testing is then correlated with physical evidence to establish a calibration for the remainder of the rock bolts and assess if this is a viable method for identifying defective elements, and what degree of accuracy can be achieved. For the sampling of particulate materials in mineral exploration and mining, the fundamental sampling error (FSE) introduced by Gy is a measure of the constitutional heterogeneity of the sample lot and is expressed as the relative standard deviation of subsample grades of a particular mass. The FSE is presently regarded as an important indicator of quality for samples used in resource estimation. Constitutional heterogeneity describes an ideal state of heterogeneity with respect to all constituents of the lot such that the fundamental error among subsamples of a particular mass is minimised.In this paper, the term ‘sampling precision’ used in relation to mineral resource sampling usually refers to a statistic based on the assay results drawn from pairs of separate subsample splits of multiple sample lots. The pairs of splits are extracted after the lots have been prepared by crushing and pulverising to meet specified criteria of grain size and subsample mass. There is presently no generally accepted method of calculating the ‘sampling precision’ from such paired data but some form of the relative standard deviation that is consistent with definition of the FSE is preferred here. The work of Thompson and Howarth in the 1970s on geochemical analytical precision, which has been subjected to extensive examination and criticism by Stanley and Lawie (2007), and that of Francois-Bongarçon since the 1990s forms the background to the discussion in the paper.A significant aspect of the application of Gy’s sampling theory to sampling in gold deposits is the requirement that the fundamental error be maintained at less than ±20 per cent. The most important reason for this is to ensure that the effects of other sampling errors such as the grouping and segregation, and increment delimitation which can cause local and global biases in sampling are kept as small as possible. This paper is focused mainly on the quality of sampling in gold deposits and looks at an alternative to the use of a constant sampling precision applied to a collection of lots with varying average grade. A theoretical model for the FSE based on duplicate sampling is presented and the simulated results of the model are compared to practical outcomes of real duplicate pairs drawn from multiple sample lots. The goal of the work is to present a more informative analysis of duplicate sample data from multiple lots which may allow a more informed view of the potential for bias generating errors during sample preparation and processing.

Shear strength parameters of compacted clay liners are needed to analyse the stability of mine waste dumps containing compacted clay liners as sealing layers for potentially acid forming waste rock. A representative clay sample was supplied by McArthur River Mine from the mine site in the Northern Territory, Australia, with an average as-supplied gravimetric moisture content of about 13.6%. The clay was compacted in a 100 mm by 100 mm direct shear box at the as-supplied moisture content to a dry density of 1.85 t/m3, representing the field compaction specification adopted by the mine. To determine the peak and ultimate shear strengths of the compacted clay, single-stage direct shear testing was carried out at nominal initial normal stresses of 50 kPa, 100 kPa and 200 kPa, representing shallow depths of burial in the North Overburden Emplacement Facility of about 2.8 m, 5.6 m and 11.1 m, respectively (assuming a waste rock wet unit weight of 18 kN/m3). Three shearing rates of 1 mm/min (rapid), 0.1 mm/min (intermediate) and 0.01 mm/min (slow) were applied to study the influence of shearing rate on shear strength. In addition, the development of a residual shear plane was tested by reversal and re-shearing in the direct shear box. In the first shearing, the peak and ultimate shear strengths are determined. The normal load was then removed and the box rewound to its starting position. The normal load was then re-applied and the specimen re-sheared. Two reversals were applied to each specimen, and it was found that there was no significant reduction in shear strength. Finally, based on a range of shear strengths obtained in the laboratory for McArthur River Mine clay and other materials by various laboratories over time, shear strength parameters for the compacted clay were recommended for use by the mine.CITATION:Xu, Y, Williams, D J and Hacker, J, 2018. Mine seismicity is one of the most difficult geotechnical risks to manage in seismically active mines. There are currently some established empirical and statistical methods that provide quantitative measures for seismic hazard assessment in operating mines. However, these methods are mostly suitable for quantifying the current or historical seismic hazard and often cannot be directly used to forecast the future hazards. Numerical modelling is the only analytical tool that can capture the level of complexities required for a meaningful analysis of mine seismicity and therefore to facilitate a reliable forecast of future hazards. However, there is currently no widely accepted and established guideline and methodology for analysing and forecasting mine seismicity using numerical modelling. This paper first provides a background on previous published studies on this subject and then outlines the key aspects that can affect the reliability of the forecasting for mine seismicity. These aspects include a) processing of historical seismic data, b) selection of suitable numerical modelling approach, c) Post-processing and interpretation of the model outputs. A case study is then presented for the Gwalia Deeps Mine where a new framework was developed to forecast future mine seismicity. High-quality seismic data for a period of five years was used for back-analysis and comparisons with the numerical modelling outputs. After development of the method, the future seismicity was forecast for the next 12 months and the actual seismicity was monitored against the forecast during this period. Results of this study shows promising potential for the proposed framework to be applied more routinely and at other mine sites. However, more validations are required at Gwalia Deeps mine as the mine proceeds to deeper levels. In addition, the method needs more improvements and should be tested and validated at other mining operations before it can be established as a proven method. The South West Rail Link (SWRL) project involved construction of a rail line to service new residential areas in south-west Sydney. The 11 km rail line is conveyed through a short tunnel at shallow depth where it crosses beneath the eight lanes of the Hume Highway. The underpass location is one of the most heavily trafficked within Sydney’s motorway network.The New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services (Roads and Maritime), as the owner of the highway asset, had the responsibility of managing the risks to the highway and traffic associated with the tunnelling project from the pretender stage through to completion. This paper considers the primary risks and mitigation measures employed, including geotechnical investigation, and development of appropriate construction constraints and concept design of an extensive real-time survey system to monitor pavement deformation during the tunnel works.The geology comprises fresh Minchinbury Sandstone in the tunnel invert and side walls, and variably weathered Bringelly Shale in the haunch and crown. Few tunnels have been excavated in these rock types in Sydney, and there is little information relating to the in situ stresses and stress-relief deformations in these materials.During tunnel construction the monitoring data indicated unexpected surface heave of up to about 24 mm. A multiparametric back-analysis of the deformation data is presented, which provides information on the deformation mechanisms and key geotechnical parameters, including rock mass modulus and in situ stresses.The approaches and methodologies developed for the SWRL underpass were effective in maintaining the safe operation and traffic capacity of the highway throughout the construction period, and the analysis of the monitoring data provides a useful reference for similar future projects, or projects constructed in similar ground conditions.CITATION:Clarke, S J and Walker, C S, 2014.
