"Segregation of conveyor roadways is a ventilation practice that is being increasingly applied in Australia. It is largely driven by the legislated requirements in Queensland pertaining to separation of escapeways from the mine. This legal requirement was based on a recommendation from the Moura No. 2 WardenÆs Inquiry (Windridge, 1996) into the mine disaster that claimed 11 lives. The report recommended: ... the introduction of a requirement for all underground mines to have one intake airway that is completely segregated from other parallel intake airways so as to provide two separate means of egress from the mine via an intake airway.This recommendation seeks to assist mine workers in escape from a mine after a fire by providing them with an airway that is free from smoke or contaminants.The concept of an airway being æcompletely segregatedÆ is an ideal that is challenging to implement in practice when considering the effect of leakage. The practice of belt segregation is concerned with the potential for fires in the belt roadway although there are numerous other potential fire sources in underground coal mines. A review of segregation practices has been conducted applying ventilation engineering principles. Four different scenarios have been analysed with regard to the effectiveness of the segregation stoppings in preventing potential fire contaminants migrating to other parts of the mine. The results show that in some cases the benefits of segregation to a person evacuating a mine in the event of a fire range from beneficial to detrimental. This is influenced by many factors including the location of that individual in that particular mine. There is room for improvement in the design and implementation of escapeways in underground coal mines. Escapeways need to be planned and designated with regard to the potential sources of fire, pressure differentials between escapeways and the operational practicalities of maintaining the pressure differential between them.CITATION:Olsen, M, 2013. Froth flotation relies on an attractive force between a particle and a bubble to selectively extract particles from a mixture. The range and magnitude of this attractive force is an area of ongoing investigation. We describe measurements of the effect of dissolved gases on the long-range attractive surface forces between a silica plate and a glass sphere in aqueous octadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (C18TACl) solutions. The measurements follow on the work of Sakamoto et al (2002) who have concluded that long-range interactions occur in air-equilibrated surfactant solutions but not in degassed solutions. In the present work, we have measured attractive forces that have a much larger in magnitude than the expected van der Waals force in solutions that were degassed by the same procedure used by Sakamoto et al (2002). We find that the forces are most attractive at 5 + 10-6 M C18TACl, which is close to the charge compensation point (ccp) of the glass sphere. At this concentration, the attractive force decays exponentially with distance and the decay length is 34 in air-saturated solution, and 38 nm in degassed solutions. In both air-equilibrated and degassed solution, the force is quite sensitive to the concentration of surfactant. The force is also sensitive to the pH. We note that our degassing procedure increases the pH of the solution from about 5.7 to 6.6 (presumably by removal of dissolved CO2). We find that the forces measured in degassed solution can be reproduced by using a solution that was equilibrated in air, then the pH was increased by addition of NaOH. Therefore, we conclude that the main effect of degassing in our experiments is to raise the pH. We show that the range and magnitude of the attractive force decreases in the presence of salt (NaCl). This suggests an electrostatic mechanism for the attraction. Possible mechanisms for the attractive force are examined, including the mechanisms that rely on a patchy coverage of surfactant on the silica surface.

The Rahu and Ascot epithermal Au-Ag prospects are two km north of the Karangahake deposit in the Hauraki Goldfield, and all occur in an approximately 6 km2 north-south elongated magnetic æquietÆ zone. The prospects are hosted by andesitic flows, lithic-crystal tuffs and local sedimentary rocks; local silica sinter occurs at Ascot. These host rocks are intensely altered by quartz, adularia, albite, chlorite, pyrite, illite, interstratified illite-smectite and calcite. Several minerals show zoned distributions, such as widespread adularia that overlies more localised and deeper albite. Illite is the only dioctahedral phyllosilicate in several drill holes, but elsewhere it forms a shallow carapace underlain by interstratified illite-smectite with 50 to 90 percent illite. Veins are common with quartz dominating near the surface and calcite becoming more abundant at depth. Local laumontite-calcite veins also occur. Pseudosecondary and secondary fluid inclusions in quartz and calcite at Rahu and Ascot have homogenisation temperatures (Th) that range from 162¦ to 268¦C and 128¦ to 243¦C, respectively. Most inclusions have trapped dilute fluids with salinities of less than 1.9 weight percent NaCl equivalent, but 20 percent of the inclusions have salinities of 2.0 to 10.5 weight percent NaCl equivalent. Calculated paleowater table elevations suggest that the water table at Rahu occurred at 440 m above sea level (asl). At Ascot, silica sinter formed from discharging geothermal fluids (=100¦C) at the paleosurface at ~135 m asl. However the sinter also contains comb quartz with pseudosecondary inclusions that have a Th average of 229¦C, corresponding to a paleowater table at ~430 m asl during inclusion entrapment. Taken together, these results suggest that the Ascot sinter was buried by approximately 300 m of cover material during a major volcanic or tectonic event, and that subsequent hydrothermal fluids formed veins and alteration at Rahu and deposited comb quartz at Ascot.

In the Mesel sediment-hosted disseminated gold deposit, the spatial distribution of hydrothermal alteration is controlled by steeply dipping faults and shallowly dipping lithologies. Hydrothermal alteration of carbonate rock is characterised by decalcification, dolomitisation and silicification. Intense argillic alteration occurs in a laccolithic andesite intrusion adjacent to decalcified and silicified carbonate units. Sulphide minerals (pyrite, realgar, orpiment, stibnite and cinnabar) accompany hydrothermal alteration and precious metal mineralisation. The trace elements Ag, As, Sb and Hg are zoned spatially throughout the deposit. Mesel contains a mineable gold reserve of 7.8 million tonnes at 7.3 g/t Au. Gold mineralisation is preferentially localised in carbonate rocks adjacent to and beneath the andesite intrusion. The ore body consists of a central, near-vertical, high grade "feeder" system flanked by tabular, inward dipping, moderate grade "ouflow" zones. Mineralisation is controlled predominantly by two steeply dipping faults with high grade (>10 g/t) gold zones centred about structural intersections and fault splays. A re-evaluation of the Hampton Boulder prospect in the early eighties resulted in a decision to proceed with mine development in December 1985. A 500 000 tpa gold treatment plant was commissioned in December 1986. The treatment facility was expanded to 1 600 000 tpa in July 1988. A tailings treatment plant to improve recoveries from harder gold bearing sulphide ores was built in December 1990. The development of an underground mine in 1991 meant that a source of sand for backfill was required. A sands plant to fulfil this requirement was commissioned during November 1991.As of June 1992 a total of 7 710 487 tonnes of ore have been treated through the New Celebration gold plant. Total gold production from inception of the new mine until June 1992 is 545 470 ounces obtained at an average recovery of 90.1 per cent from an average gold head grade of 2.4 g/t. The combined quoted ore reserves at the end of December 1991 was 14Mt grading 1.8 g/t gold

The paragenesis of the Escuzar Mine (Andalusia-Spain) comprises: ò major constituents: celestite and carbonated minerals (abundant calcite and less frequent strontianite). ò minor constituents: sulphates (gypsum and anhydrite), clays and some iron oxides and hydroxides. The average content is at about 60 per cent SrSO4. Since liberation size was fine (from 30 to 50 ¦m), the flotation method was chosen. Laboratory batch tests have shown the relevance of using alkylsulphates with as long as possible hydrocarbon chains. The recovery obtained led to an expected 95 per cent SrSO4 concentrate with nearly 70 per cent recovery. Pilot plant tests (160 kg/h) have confirmed these results and attained a recovery of more than 65 per cent of a 96 per cent SrSO4 concentrate. Extrapolation to the industrial scale (14 t/h) has been successfully carried out : up to 600 t of a concentrate at more than 95 per cent SrSO4 has been obtained. Non optimised recovery has already reached 60 per cent for a 97 per cent SrSo4 concentrate.

It's a great pleasure to be here today, for a whole series of reasons. First of all, when I first went to Perth back in 1972, I shortly afterwards began auditing and one of the people to pick on me when I audited the West Australian Newspaper at that time was Patrick O'Connor's father. One way to win a person across when you're auditing and getting picked on is by showing an interest in their children, so I did that and employed Patrick in our firm. In those days, conflicts of interest didn't occur. When I started Normandy, Patrick was one of the first people I went to get to work with me. He very unwisely chose to leave at one stage and you can see he's done extremely well by not staying with us. So it's lovely to have you here today, Patrick. The difference between Patrick and me, now, is that he's kept his hair, and if you're tall enough you can see I haven't.

This paper describes the general approach to ore reserve estimation and mine planning used at the Kidston Gold Mine. The geological setting and exploration is briefly summarized for background information.A geostatistical study of the deposit was carried out to determine the geological ore reserve. This was confirmed using a manual polygonal technique. Optimum pits outlined by a Lerchs-Grossman open pit design algorithm were manually smoothed allowing mineable reserves to be calculated. Mine production schedules based on kriged block grades and tonnages are continuously updated using production blasthole assays. An arithmetic mean technique of block grade estimation has proved successful to date. After milling approximately 4.9Mt of ore, the mill grade of 2.13g Au/t is only 0.5% above the mine estimate of 2.12g Au/t. The difference in contained gold between "As staked" blasthole reserves and kriged mineable reserves is 3.8%. The application of blasthole kriging as a basis for ore/waste classification in erratically mineralized areas is being evaluated. Planned future developments are briefly mentioned.

This paper describes the technical development of the Newman beneficiation plant over its 23 years of operation and how this development relates to the mine ore reserves of high-grade and low-grade ore. It also discusses the importance of the beneficiation product grades in the overall blending of shippable products from a range of mines to optimise overall ore resource utilisation. Also discussed is the importance of the ore reserve reconciliations in resource utilisation. Data is provided on the capacity and quality improvement results of the plant upgrade, carried out in 1999. This shows how the original capacity upgrade targets have been exceeded and the additional quality benefits that have been obtained from this capacity.

Discrete element modelling (DEM) is a research tool that involves numerically solving the equations of motion of large numbers of particles. It can be very useful for investigating mechanisms that can lead to bias when extracting samples from material as it is carried on a conveyor belt or as it falls from the end of a conveyor belt. DEM is more realistic than conceptual models and mathematical models; but it is not as realistic as physical experimentation. Its primary advantages over physical experimentation are that it is cheaper and that it allows many factors to be varied while keeping other factors unchanged.This paper reviews our investigations of the performance of sampling systems by using DEM. The sampling systems investigated include falling-stream cutters, cross-belt cutters, Vezins and a device called a ætrue-beltÆ cutter, which is being developed. The purpose of the review is to explain what DEM has contributed to the theory and practice of sampling, and to indicate what it is likely to be able to contribute in the future.CITATION:Robinson, G K, Cleary, P W and Sinnott, M D, 2012. Computational models are very useful for studying many of the physical mechanisms which can cause sample bias. Within such models we can predict the trajectories of all individual particles and thereby make observations which are not possible for physical systems. Physical mechanisms highlighted include congestion at the cutter aperture, particles bouncing over the cutter aperture, air drag on fine particles, waves of material being bulldozed off the belt by the upstream side of the body of square cutters, and particles being thrown by the leading edges of cross-belt cutter blades. Having identified relevant physical mechanisms for an existing cutter, we can estimate the extent to which they are likely to result in unequal representation of portions of a stream of material and thereby estimate the maximum likely sample bias.

At the beginning of the seventies pre- drainage of methane was introduced in West German coal mining in order to reduce the gas emission from the worked seam. After three pilot tests on the "Rheinland" Colliery (86 boreholes in seam "Prasident"), "Bergmannsgluck/ Westerholt" Colliery (23 boreholes in seam "Gustav") and "General Blumenthal" Colliery (27 boreholes in seam "Hugo" and 170 boreholes in seam "Karl") systematic large scale tests with extended investigations were carried out un the "Rheinland" Colliery (127 boreholes in the seams "Anna", "Blucher", Prasident"). During this time an analogous test was carried out on the "Consolidation" Colliery (21 bore- holes in seam "B"). In these studies and tests the technical feasibility, efficiency and economy could be proved, so that pre-drainage of methane starts spreading. On the "Rheinland" Colliery pre-drainage has become common practice in gassy seams. Mainly two points impede a faster spreading of method: 1. in many cases the necessary requirement, that one or both of the gate roads should ire driven 6 to 12 months before the face is worked, is missing. This is mainly due to the difficulty of retreat mining in passe seams.

Production of hot metal from the Hlsmelt Research and Development Facility at Kwinana, Western Australia commenced in October 1993. The stand-alone facility is a unique, coal-based, integrated ironworks equipped to process iron ore fines to pig iron and simultaneously undertake a wide range of research tasks. The data generated will be used to verify the commercial potential of the technology and to set the design and operating parameters for a full-scale production plant. The design, construction, commissioning and initial operation of the HRDF has required many innovative and practical solutions to be developed and implemented by the international group of organisations contributing to the Hlsmelt Project. Initial operation has produced results which demonstrate the potential of the unique process technology associated with the core plant smelting unit. The recent achievement of post-combustion levels of 60 per cent with heat transfer efficiencies greater than 85 per cent demonstrates that the performance obtained with the Small Scale Pilot Plant in Maxhutte, Germany can be reproduced at a larger scale. The results presented in this paper support the thrust for further intensification and future commercialisation of the process.

The Mt Whaleback open cut mine South Wall is, in part, developed as an unbenched dip slope. The remainder of the rock slope consists of asymetrical overturned folds which have been locally truncated by major low angle faults. The Mt Whaleback orebody is structurally controlled and therefore extensive structural geology input has gone into the final rock slope design. The design is based on normalised 40 m geological cross sections, but the inherent complexity of the geological structure of the orebody yields a high degree of uncertainty within that interval. There- fore, the final slope bench face and the penultimate bench faces are mapped in detail to accurately establish the geological contacts and struc- ture. The knowledge of accurate geology of final and penultimate faces plays a very important role in the design of controlled perimeter blast- ing. Accurate geology is established mainly by face mapping, and by hole geological evaluation of blastholes to locally refine the current Geologi- cal model.

A linear motor properly wound can serve as a mechanism for separating paramagnetic sulphide minerals, like pyrrhotite, from other sulphides and associated gangue minerals. The effective- ness of separation depends on the energising current of the separator, the frequency of the a.c. cycle, and the particle size of the minerals. The speed of travel of the minerals over the surface of the separator is also a function of particle size, and appears to be constant. The movement of pyrrhotite, magnetite and iron filings of comparable size fraction (150um +74pm) on the linear motor surface has been observed using a cine camera. An attempt has been made to give a theoretical basis for the movement of the particles by calculating the minimum electrical energy required to move them. Further, the rate of decay of magnetic moment of the particles has been estimated for magnetite and it has been found that sufficient residual magnetism existed in the particles after they had been exposed to the first half of an a.c. cycle for them to have like polarity with the second half of the cycle. The particles are therefore repelled from the motor surface every second half of the cycle. This repulsion due to remanent magnetism is the probable cause of particle movement over the linear meter surf, e.

There is an increasing need for reliable and comparable coal resource data and it is necessary to standardize the traditional classification procedures by quantifying the three basic evaluation criteria of economic feasibility, geologic assurance and recovery. For well documented deposits, geostatistical methods can consider- ably improve classification quality. A geostatistically based algorithm for classifying coal resources within the current Queensland and New South Wales codes has been developed. Application of the method in classifying resources from a number of seams exhibiting different structural characteristics is assessed. The method is found to give classification results which closely reflect the error associated with an estimate of resource quantities based on current sampling densi- ties. It requires a careful geostatistical analysis with emphasis on geological awareness. Resource category restrictions must be arbi- trarily assigned and remain constant for all deposits being compared. Engineering judgement is needed and interpretation may be required with isolated and peripheral blocks.

Excavator output rates given in Makers' catalogues are sometimes based on favourable operating conditions. Mine operators and planners are more interested in the Effective Hourly Output in normal operation (Qe) a plant system can give hour by hour and year after year in a particular application. The number of hours mining plant will be available for normal operation will be less than the annual total of 8760 h. The number of the available hours which can be utilised at Qe will depend largely on the number and types of units in the plant system, the manners in which they are applied and the nature of the deposit in which they work. The emphasis herein is on continuous systems for deep stripping with BWE's as the primary excavator. Examples and suggestions are given for the annual hours at Qe for some BWE systems.

The adsorption of gold cyanide by the weak base ion exchange resins, PAZ-4¦ and Duolite A-7C, the neutral polymeric adsorbent, Amberlite XAD7¦, and the strong base resins, PAZ-8~a and IRA-400 have been studied in both low and high salinity waters, and their performance compared with activated carbon. A systematic study has also been made of the effect of different ions (Na+, Cat+, Mgt+, Cl', SO4) ) on the gold adsorption capacity and kinetics of these resins. The results indicate that, contrary to popular belief, the ion exchange resin, can perform effectively in highly saline environments. The performance of the neutral polymeric adsorbent im- proves with increasing salinity but cannot match the performance of the ion-exchange resins.
