High productivity mining is the key to the financial success and stability of modern mines. This can be achieved through the use of new technologies, the development of innovative work practices and optimisation of the mining method to suit the mining environment. Big Bell Mine is a 1.7 Mtpa longitudinal sublevel caving operation at a head grade of 3.14 g/t. Annual production is 170 000 ounces of gold. The selection and implementation of bulk emulsion explosives was seen as the logical progression from blow loaded ANFO for the high tonnage rate required from the longitudinal sublevel cave. Prior to the implementation of bulk emulsions an investigation was required to examine the technical and financial benefits available with the introduction of bulk emulsion. This paper examines the review process and the successful implementation of bulk emulsion explosives at Big Bell.

The selective recovery of gold and silver from solutions containing other metals, such as copper, is possible using AuRIX«100 resin in conjunction with the Gekko Resin Column. Selectivity is driven by controlling the solution pH, which enables activities such as loading copper, gold and silver and then selectively stripping copper before gold and silver. Alternatively gold and silver can be loaded and the copper left in solution. The selective loading of gold while reducing the silver loading has also been demonstrated, opening the possibility of producing high grade gold dorT from high grade silver pregnant leach solutions. This paper reviews the AuRIX«100 resin and Gekko Resin Column Technologies, discusses the uses of AuRIX«100 in the recovery of gold and silver and the chemistry relating to several projects for which AuRIX«100 is being tested.

Rope guides, consisting of ropes spanning between anchor points at the top and bottom of shafts, have frequently been considered as a viable alternative to fixed guides, comprising buntons and guides. However, their design has generally been based on empirically derived rules, arising from European hoisting practice of 50 to 100 years ago. This paper describes a recent technology development project aimed at defining and quantifying the important forces acting on rope guided conveyances, calculating the resulting displacement of the conveyances and assessing whether the displacements are acceptable or not. The paper describes the derivation of aerodynamic force coefficients based on CFD analyses and other significant forces acting on the conveyance and rope system. The conveyance displacements may be calculated using computer simulation of the mechanical system, or approximately using simplified equations given in the paper. Measurements taken to confirm the suitability of the proposed formulation are described. The combination of displacements and assessment of the rope guide system design are proposed, based on the ratio of design clearances and the predicted displacements.

BHP Billiton (BHPB) was the first company to start iron ore mining in the Pilbara at Mt Goldsworthy in 1966 through Goldsworthy Mining Limited (GML - then Consolidated Goldfields Australia, Cyprus Mines and Utah). Operations later started at Newman on Mt Whaleback in 1969 with the Mt Newman Mining Joint Venture (MNM û then comprising American Metals Climax û AMAX, Colonial Sugar Refineries û CSR and BHP). In 1986 it acquired majority ownership of MNM, and at the same time the previously 100 per cent BHPB owned but undeveloped Yandi property came on board. Purchase of Jimblebar (formerly McCameyÆs Monster) occurred in 1990 and full ownership of Goldsworthy followed in 1991. With the exception of Jimblebar (100 per cent owned), all mines are now 85 per cent BHPB and the balance with Itochu and Mitsui. This evolution of the company resulted in an eclectic mix of mines/ores, each with their varied exploration and evaluation histories. Discussion of some aspects of these histories, and reflections on changes in exploration-related activities with particular reference to discussion of advances in geological understanding since the 1960s forms the basis of this paper. BHPB presently has open cut mines at four main centres û Newman, Jimblebar, Marillana Creek (Yandi) and Yarrie û and is currently developing the former GML Area C near Yandi. With the exception of NewmanÆs Mt Whaleback mine and immediate satellites, all are contract operated. Ore is carried on BHPB railroads (696 km total) for export through the companyÆs Nelson Point or Finucane Island shipping facilities at Port Hedland. Some is directed to the BHPB Boodarie Iron hot briquetted iron plant near Finucane Island. Over 73 Mt of ore was produced by BHPB in calendar 2001, and the company has now mined over 1500 Mt in Western Australia since their operations at Yampi Sound first started in 1956.

Iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) systems of the Carajás mineral province (Amazon craton, Brazil) are structurally controlled by regional-scale shear zones and have formed by multiple episodes of fluid circulation and hydrothermal alteration in the Neoarchean (2.71–2.68 Ga and 2.56 Ga) and Palaeoproterozoic (1.90–1.87 Ga).Collectively, fluid inclusion, boron, oxygen and hydrogen isotope data and Cl/Br–Na/Cl ratios in fluid inclusions reveal that regional circulation of non-magmatic brines (eg evaporative fluids/evolved sea water) and mixing with other fluid sources (eg meteoric or magmatic) is an important attribute in the genesis of the Carajás IOCG systems. The ?33S and d34S compositions of sulfides from the Neoarchean and Palaeoproterozoic IOCG systems suggest that the ore-bearing fluids have assimilated sulfur from crustal reservoirs. Fluid inclusions and sulfur isotopic compositions were studied in a possible extension of the Toyoha polymetallic vein deposit. The objective of this work was to gain a better understanding of the ore depositional conditions, sources of ore constituents, and distribution of mineralizing fluid in the region. Fluid inclusions in sphalerite and quartz show that most homogenization temperatures range between 190¦ and 290¦C. Most salinities range from 0.0 to 3.4 wt per cent NaCl equiv. Sulfur isotopic compositions of ore minerals (pyrite, sphalerite and galena), determined by a conventional technique, range between 1.3 and 7.7 per mil. The mineralizing fluids were characterized by relatively low and various temperatures and low to moderate salinities compared to those at the southeast region of the main ore bodies (Izumo and Shinano veins) where rare elements such as tin, tungsten and indium occurred. Obtained temperatures and salinities were attributed to the mixing of hydrothermal fluids with groundwater. Sulfur isotopic data suggest sulfide sulfur was of magmatic origin. Isotopic temperatures, estimated from the isotopic fractionation factor between sphalerite and coexisting galena, are between 195¦ and 322¦C. The temperatures are only consistent with fluid inclusion homogenization temperatures in sphalerite or coexisting quartz when sphalerite was a honey-yellow coarse crystal lacking conspicuous colored growth bands. This suggests the detailed classification of mineral pairs growth textures will be necessary for precise in situ measurements to obtain reasonable eothermometric results.

Compositional and isotopic analyses of coal seam gases in the Southern Coalfields have shown that these gases frequently contain abnormally high concentrations of magmatically derived carbon dioxide. The size of this carbon dioxide reservoir and the extent of permeation of the sediments by carbon dioxide are not known.Therefore caution in evaluating the natural gas potential of the region is advised.

This paper proposes a set of new approaches for the optimisation of planning and designs in mines by means of evolutionary algorithms, which include the determination of ore grade, layout of development system, selection of mining methods and production scheduling in underground mines. Between, 1980 and 1984, the demand for non- ferrous metals in the free world grew annually by 1.5 per cent for copper, 0.4 per cent for lead, 1.4 per cent for zinc, and 2.5 per cent for nickel. The growth rate decreased substantially compared to the rate experienced before 1980, and was far lower than the GNP growth during the corresponding period. The main reasons for this are considered to be 1. resource-saving efforts by industrialized countries resulting from the first and the second oil crises, 2. saturated demand for durable consumer goods, and 3. substitution of non-ferrous metals by new materials such as optical fibers.

The Australian glass sand industry produces some 2.8 million tonnes per annum of silica sand, of which about 2.0 million tonnes are exported and the rest is for the domestic market. Approximate production rates for each Australian state are listed.The variety of processing methods used in the currently exploited deposits reflects the size, location, and characteristics of the various deposits and the requirement of the end market/s. The industry uses to a large extent equipment developed for the separation of mineral sands, particularly as it applies to low grade heavy mineral deposits, where low cost, high capacity and metallurgically efficient equipment has proved eminently suitable for the production of the low value glass sands.The requirements of the domestic market, as well as those of the present and potential export markets are discussed covering quality requirements, distribution channels and other factors critical to success.

Politicians and economists talk glibly about the so-called knowledge revolution. The reality is that knowledge is fundamental to economic progress. Consequently there have been many technological revolutions. The global impacts of the invention of the steam engine and the development of the frozen meat industry are well known. Another less publicised technological advance occurred in Central Otago late in the nineteenth century. This was the adaptation of the bucketladder dredge to the mining of placer deposits. A product of over 30 years experimentation and innovation, New Zealand dredging technology was taken to the Risdon Iron and Locomotive Works, San Francisco by R H Postlethwaite, a Dunedin based mining engineer. New Zealand-style dredges built by Risdon operated successfully in California, Alaska and the Yukon. Californian engineers assimilated the best features of the New Zealand dredges with American (Bucyrus) designs to produce a standard for the worldwide placer mining industry.

As the oxide reserves in an oxide/sulphide deposit are exhausted transition to the treatment of sulphides should be investigated in detail and well before processing the sulphide ore commences. The investigation should be broad based to consider all treatment options and not restricted entirely by the existing process plant treatment method. These options may include cyanidation, flotation, roasting, bacterial leaching or gravity treatment and are chosen on the basis of various testwork responses. Experiences in laboratory testing of sulphides and treatment of sulphides at various operations are discussed. This includes the treatment of copper/gold sulphides, CIP treatment of sulphides and treatment of marcasite ore in a conventional CIP circuit.

The Australian Constitution specifies certain powers of the Commonwealth Government to be used in its capacity as the national government. Certain of these broad powers result in the Com- monwealth having a facility to play an important part in the development of the mining industry. The State Governments, however, by virtue of their wide powers to regulate matters within the boundaries of a particular State, are more directly involved in the day to day administration and standards of activities of mining operations. In this respect the Common- wealth has something of a dual role because of its "State-like" responsibilities for the mainland Terri- tories. The components of the role that the Common- wealth Government discharges in relation to the mining industry are qualified to varying extents at particular times by the political persuasion of the Government. In absolute terms the components are as follows. 1. Economic management. The Commonwealth's fiscal and monetary policies have an important effect on industry as well as on State finances. In particular, the taxation regime employed by the Commonwealth Government is of direct importance to economic decision-makers in the mining industry. 2. International matters. International trade and commodity matters are, more and more, becoming an everyday part of the conduct of a nation's foreign affairs. 3. Exports. The Commonwealth Government, via the constitutional powers over overseas trade, have exercised varying degrees of control over mineral exports to achieve particular objectives. 4. Foreign capital and investment. Australia in general, and the mining industry in particular, is and will continue to be a net importer of capital. There appears to be bipartisan political agreement in Australia that foreign investment policy must be enunciated to ensure that investors. are in no doubt that Australia welcomes beneficial investment and technology from overseas. 5. Environment and Aborigines. Governments, both Commonwealth and State, have in recent years become more involved in these areas in response to their interpretations of community aspirations. 6. Energy. Access to assured supplies of energy is now viewed, by Governments worldwide, as a desirable asset to ensure the well-being of a nation's people and industries.

The efficient design of carbon-in-pulp (C.I.P.) plants involves the integration of both process engineering and design engineering.Many recently constructed plants have not recognised the above interrelationship, and as such have incurred higher capital and operating costs than were in reality necessary. This has been compounded in some cases by slavishly following the design of plants where process conditions are different for the ore characteristics in question, thus perpetuating design errors that finally become industry "accepted practice".In the paper that is to be presented the unit operations of crushing, grinding, classification, leaching, adsorption, desorption and electrowinning in C.I.P. plants will be discussed with reference to the integration of process and design engineering.

In recent years, the. art of electric steelmaking has received a great deal of attention, and naturally, much controversy has existed from time to time regarding the relative merits of different practices and tywes of furnaces. Nevertheless, at the present time, the basic principles of the process are reasonably well established, and by far the greatest percentage of electric steel is a product of the basic lined, direct arc type furnace. Ferro alloy manufacture has demanded the development of furnaces having very different characteristics to those used for steel. Some special alloys, however, require conditions of manufacture which are more closely approached in the steel type furnace, and thus the latter has been adapted where necessary for the production of these alloys.One such alloy, low carbon ferro-manganese, is manufactured at Whyalla, South Australia, in a basic-lined, direct arc furnace, which is used alternatively for the production of alloy steels.BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ELECTRIC FURNACEThe principle of melting by electricity was first applied to the melting of iron in 1879 by William von Siemens, whose equipment consisted of a small crucible into which were introduced two carbon electrodes.
