A stibnite concentrate from Golden Spec (WA) was subjected to a series of tests involving high pressure cyanidation and pressure oxidation followed by conventional cyanidation. The concentrate, whose gold content was 18.1 g/t, yielded only eight per cent of the gold when leached directly by a standard 24-hour cyanidation test. The recovery was increased to only 15 per cent when pressure cyanided under the following conditions: ambient temperature, 2000 kPa oxygen pressure, two hour retention time and 30 per cent w/w solids pulp density. This poor response to pressure cyanidation emphasised the refractoriness of the material. Evidence of the fine distribution of the gold through the concentrate, from measurements of the particle sizing distribution and the gold analyses of the individual fractions, also suggested that this concentrate was highly refractory. Pressure oxidation of the concentrate at elevated temperatures followed by cyanidation yielded recoveries as high as 94 per cent. However a preoxidation treatment under the following conditions was necessary: 230¦C, 2000 kPa oxygen pressure for a period of four hours.

Uranium occurrences and the probable Australian reserves are discussed and the recovery and processing methods used in treatment plants at Radium Hill and Port Pirie, S.A., Rum Jungle and Moline, N.T., and Mary Kathleen, Qid. are reviewed. The broad aspects of the application of nuclear power in Australia are then considered, and those factors of greatest significance are highlighted. It is these factors that are most likely to dictate the future role of nuclear generation in Australia. In commenting on private industry applications, the paper emphasises that each case must be considered on its own merits, and a warning is given that general statements can be misleading. In the long-term situation nuclear power is considered to be capable of playing a leading role and the discussion covers desalination and high load industries although short term applications appear difficult to justify. In non-power applications for nuclear energy reference is made to isotopes and the uses of nuclear devices in mining and civil engineering with a pertinent comment on safety.

During the intial two years (1972 - 1974) of exploration at Telfer, water require- ments were limited to supporting a 50 man camp and diamond drilling to verify thickness and grade of the stratabound ore deposit. Water bores were drilled to intersect the Middle Vale Reef down dip from its outcrop about 70 metres below surface. The MVR reef is an oxidized pyritic horizon which contains 30% - 65% sulphide below the zone of oxidation and forms a highly porous leached gossanous zone to a depth of 100 metres. Heap leaching is a low capital cost alternative to conventional processing techniques for gold recovery from areas that contain small gold particles in a porous host rock.For successful heap leaching the ores to be leached must maintain good permeability after being stacked into heaps so that the leach solutions can percolate evenly through them.The presence of clays, slimes or excessive amounts of fines can hamper the flow of leach solutions causing channelling and producing dormant or unleached areas within the heaps. This results in unreasonably long leach periods and poor extractions. In extreme cases the clays or fines completely seal ore heaps, causing leach solutions to run off the sides of t'he heaps rather than penetrate the ore.The Northern Queensland Company uses the Agglomeration Heap Leach technique (AHL) to overcome the difficulties associated with clays or fines. This technique involves cementing the fines, by using readily available binders, into a rigid, porous network that greatly enhances uniform flow of cyanide leach solutions through the ore heaps.

The purpose of this paper is to provide some practical commercial advice in relation to issues of access and trespass during exploration. It is not my intention to provide a detailed analysis of the applicable law because this is not the appropriate forum for latin maxims and turgid case studies. Instead I will explain the issues in sufficient detail to enable those who are not familiar,with the legal concepts to understand their obligations and responsibilities in relation to exploration activities. Take as an example a situation where a company (for the sake of attempted light relief, called Rogue Mining) holds an exploration tenement adjacent to one held by Lamb Exploration. In conducting aerial exploration activities over its own tenement Rogue overflies the tenement held by Lamb, doesn't turn off its equipment and accidentally collects data in respect of the adjacent land. In analysing that data it becomes apparent to Rogue that there is a substantial anomaly on the adjacent land of which Lamb is apparently unaware. Rogue subsequently negotiates to purchase an interest in Lamb's tenement.

æConventional wisdomÆ believes that fine particles have low flotation recoveries. Plant size û recovery graphs often have the classic æhillÆ shape û high recovery in the mid sizes and low recovery at the fine and coarse ends. Yet if mineral liberation is poor, low fines recovery may be because you don't grind fine enough! This apparent paradox is explained by the old concept of æsand/slimesÆ circuits, which recognises the different flotation needs of fine and coarse particles. This concept is overlooked in the push for simpler circuits and larger equipment. Most plants now treat all particles together in a wide size-distribution. Reagent conditions are set for the dominant coarser particles, so fines are starved of collector. Worse still if there are significant midsized composites û often these have to be rejected in cleaning to achieve target concentrate grade. But the conditions which reject mid-size composites û collector starvation and high depressants û also reject fine liberated particles. In fact, fines flotation can be excellent when flotation chemistry is tailored to fines.

Subsurface development requires some geotechnical conditions and challenges. Most of then are related to the compatibility between tunnelling system and surrounded ground conditions, and design criteria. Design criteria usually involve lining pressure and ground control of displacements. In order to fulfil these requirements, geotechnical parameters have to be obtained as well as construction aspects have to be taken into account for predicting the tunnel behaviour. The Brasilia Metro is presented as a case history illustrating the geotechnical conditions and challenges for its implementation. It is 42 km long, including tunnels excavated in collapsible porous soils by the New Austrian Tunnelling Method. The Brasilia porous clay presents some characteristics, which may lead to large deformations due to structural collapse. Empirical methods were calibrated for collapsible porous soils and then applied to predict tunnelling-induced settlements. Settlements due to soil structural collapse modify completely the expected settlement profile, increasing their values from the tunnel crown to the ground surface. Consequently, surface settlement trough volumes were also greater than the ground losses around the tunnel. In this case history, structural collapse of porous soils played an important role and must have been taken into account to predict correctly the settlement trough and profile. Numerical simulation has shown that settlement magnitudes due to structural collapse are strongly dependent on the soil stiffness reduction after collapse and the extent of the collapsible zone.

The Rock Mass Rating (RMR) and Rock Mass Strength (RMS) classification systems for jointed rock masses are briefly reviewed, with particular reference to their use in slope stability studies. A correlation is provided between the results obtained from the two classifications and an equation is presented tentatively defining the RMR value for long-term stable slope angles. Artificial support can be used to improve wall stability in open pit mines. This is examined for a particular case where the factor of safety for a slope is kept constant by using artificial support as the slope angle is increased. It is demonstrated that the savings in excavation generally exceed the cost of support. However, in order to correctly judge the eco- nomic impact of artificial support on the project, all the elements relat- ing to the use of artificial support must be taken in account.

Conveyor belt haulage offers the advan tages of continuity of operation, minimum labour requirements, and the ability to handle large volumes of material over extended periods. However, breakdown of critical con- veyors in the system can cause undue and substantial losses in production output at the working faces, unless adequate surge bin capacity is incorporated in the haulage system. A conveyor belt simulation programme, code name 'Beltsim' was developed by Bucklen et al (1968) at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in the U.S.A. and provides a quantitative measure of the performance of a conveyor belt network design. A limitation still exists with the computer programme and involves the inability of the programme to predict the necessary surge bin capacity to overcome conveyor belt downtime. The computer programme was modified to overcome this limitation, to simulate a con- veyor belt breakdown, and to provide a quantitative prediction of the surge bin capacity necessary to permit a modern mining system to operate effectively and continuously.

Total extraction is a misnomer and invariably some coal losses occur in the mining of pillars. "Fulls" pillar extraction is by the pocket and fender method, the splitting method or the open end method, with extraction in the pillar, and in rows of pillars in planned sequence, using combinations of coal and timber and roof-bolts for support. Where circumstances dictate, partial extraction is used, leaving behind portions of pillars in large blocks for support. The use of such extraction plans and supports as minimum guidelines has contributed greatly to safety in United States Coal Mines.
