The four major contracts for the construction of Museum Station are: 1) Installation of Soldier Piles, 2) Structural Contract including the temporary support, 3) Architectural Finishes which include Electrical and Mechanical Services and 4) Supply and Installation of lifts and escalators. Specific areas of interest include the fabrication, installation and removal of temporary support steelwork, the monitoring of ground loading, and the interface between the structure and. the temporary support. The information collated during construction confirmed the design assumptions and criteria. No major changes'were required in the design of the construction methods. The open cut excavation and construction of this major structure in an inner city area was significant by any standard and was successfully completed with minimum disruption to the public and without damage to adjoining or surrounding property.

South Bulli is the oldest and largest underground coal mine in Australia. Two longwall units are in operation and current production is 2.5 to 3 million tonnes of run of mine product per year with a workforce of 600. Prior to 1984 a workforce of around 1,200 produced 1.5 million tonnes. Advances in technology can. of course, account for some of this gain, but the changes made in the human resources area are also seen as playing a major role in South Bulli emerging as a reasonably stable operation.The human resources strategy adopted recognises the value of the workforce and is aimed at not only fostering cooperation as all levels, but also making employees aware of the direct contribution they can make to the success of the enterprise.

This work describes a novel mapping technique that allows the direct overlay of calculated local phase equilibria on micrographs of the physical system. The technique demonstrated integrates FactSage™, ver 8.2 (by Thermfact Ltd. and GTT-Technologies) phase equilibria calculations with mapped compositions determined by Scanning Electron Microscope – Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) to visually express calculated properties while preserving the spatial information of the sample. The developed methodology is used to analyse interrupted blast furnace softening and melting tests containing mixed burdens of lump and sinter. Tests are interrupted at 1300C and cooled to room temperature for analysis. Phases present at room temperature are analysed to infer the liquid fraction and phases present at high temperature. Analysis of the interface regions between the dissimilar burdens allows insights to be gained into the interaction mechanism. During the transition from solid to liquid, migration and interaction of liquid oxide across the interfaces of the dissimilar burdens has been observed and demonstrated to impact softening and melting performance. Specifically, interaction of the oxides generated by lump (primarily FeO, SiO2 and Al2O3) and sinter (primarily FeO, CaO, SiO2, Al2O3 and MgO) are analysed, and the occurrence of a range of new mineral phases such as merwinite, melilite, olivine and bredigite observed.

The central Taupo Volcanic Zone is a region of intense Quaternary silicic volcanism accompanying rapid crustal extension. Modem central TVZ is the most frequently active and productive silicic volcanic system on Earth, erupting rhyolite at c. 0.28 m' s'. The rhyolites show no major compositional changes with time, but the total extent of magma chamber zonation has changed with the advent of rifting and crustal extension at c.0.7 Ma. At least 34 caldera-forming ignimbrite eruptions have formed a complex sequence of relatively short-lived, nested and/or overlapping volcanic centres in central TVZ. Taupo contrasts with other large silicic magmatic systems in the exceptionally high frequency, but small size, of caldera- forming eruptions. This contrast reflects the thin, rifted nature of the TVZ crust, that precludes the development of long- term magmatic cycles at Taupo.Within central TVZ, non-rhyolitic compositions have been erupted apparently irregularly in time and space; in particular there is no evidence for a geographic separation of basalts from andesites. TVZ is a rifted arc, but its segmented nature, high thermal flux and voluminous rhyolitic volcanism make it unique on Earth.

South Africa is the world's largest producer of gold. The survival of its gold mining industry is dependent, to a large extent, on the successful implementation of new mining technology which reduces the operating costs. Gold mines of the country have a record of a high operational cost per tonne of rock excavated. The geology of the gold-bearing rock, in addition to the mining depth and the gold recoverable grade, profoundly affect the profitability of the industry. Among the other mining operations, drilling and blasting take a fair share of the mining cost. It is therefore proper to implement a dynamic approach of technological review aimed at combating the escalation of mining costs. Over the years, the industry has moved away from labour intensive activities. Mechanised operations are introduced where possible. Management techniques are oriented more towards better utilisation of human resources and machinery so as to enhance productivity in the stopes. This paper addresses the issue with particular reference to blasting operations in the stopes of deep gold mines. It reviews the conventional drilling and blasting techniques. It outlines some innovative changes brought about in the course of recent years with the aim of optimising productivity and the stope efficiency in particular. It focusses on the peculiarities of the blasting technology in deep mines. It discusses the issue of interaction between the high stress fields underground and the blasting generated stresses on rock fragmentation, as well as their impact on the remaining excavations. It anticipates the concept of the new technology of selective blasting in stoping. Finally it puts forward the crucial role played by management of the human factor underground.

The uptake of nickel into the lattice of pyrrhotite,Fel_oS has been studied experimentally in the temperaturerange 200 DC to 760 DC. Nickel from both aqueous solutionsand salt melts diffuses rapidly into the sulphide latticewith ,an accompanying rel~ase of iron into the solution ormelt. The rate of uptake of nickel and its diffusion intothe sulphide lattice have been followed ,by opticalmicroscopy and by analysis with an electron probe microanalyser.Some geological consequences of this phenomenonaffecting the distribution of nickel in rocks associatedwith nickel-iron sulphide ores are discussed.

The specification for tender nominated the requirements for ore hoisting and servicing; this showed that one common duty winder could be selected. Foliowing the design of the shaft layout, the merits of fixed or rope guides were compared and the latter selected.The specification called for the supply and installation of the complete hoisting system. Construction of the winder tower and shaft bottom steel work had to proceed while mine development was in progress using the sinking winder and headframe. Guide ropes, winder ropes, and the sky shaft were installed in the shortest possible time, and as the shaft was not equipped with ladder-ways, a second means of access had to be provided.Very few problems were encountered witll the commissioning of the winder, and in the first 2 years of operation the only significant modification was to the circuitry associated witll the moving access platforms.Hoist rope tension checking and adjustment are simple, and non-destructive testing has shown no deterioration of these ropes. The operation of the balance ropes has been very satisfactory but cleaning presented problems in the early stages. Guide ropes have been trouble free and require minimum attention.Normal wear on the PVC rope groove inserts on the winder drum has been negligible.Since the commissioning on fully automatic ·control, the winder has operated with very few, minor delays.

Relationships between lead blast furnace performance and the composition and size distribution of sinter were determined from analysis of lead blast furnace operating data. Sintering plant practice was subsequently modified and substantially improved furnace performance resulted.

"Due to the increasing amount of gangues in iron ores, a beneficiation process is required more as a preliminary step for ironmaking process. However, mechanical grinding and washing of iron ore needs tremendous effort that increases operating cost. Therefore, there is a necessity of a novel approach to ironmaking which can tolerate considerable amounts of silica or alumina. In the present study, a high alumina-carbon composite pellet was examined for an ironmaking process. The effect of compositional changes in the CaO-FexOy-Al2O3-SiO2 oxide system on the reduction of carbon composite pellets was investigated in a purpose built thermo-gravimetric analyser (TGA) at 1473K (1200¦C). As a result, alumina increased the reaction rate of carbon composite pellets by increasing surface area, while silica decreased the reaction rate by lowering surface area of samples. Infrared gas analysis assisted with the reaction kinetics of carbon composite pellets through measurement of CO and CO2 in off-gases. This study will assist with establishing the new pelletising method which differs from the conventional fluxed pellets.CITATION:Park, H and Sahajwalla, V, 2013. In May 2000, Kanowna Belle Gold Mines (KBGM) carried out a detailed Truck versus Shaft Haulage Study. The study showed that whilst the shaft option had many operating cost benefits the capital costs were too high, therefore the truck option was selected. In May 2001, the concept of achieving æshaft typeÆ benefits without the capital costs was floated. This is achieved by separating the hoisting of ore from other mining activities. The general concept is that material from underground is transported to a central location and then transported to the surface by a special truck fleet, thus removing the dependency between trucks and loaders, providing the mine with surge capacity and decreasing operating costs. At KBGM these advantages have been gained by installing an ore pass system with a plate feeder at its base that directly loads trucks. This provides the mine with a haulage system with enough surge capacity to remove the interdependency between trucks and loaders. The plate feeder is situated just off the decline which creates the opportunity to use larger more reliable, lower cost trucks. A number of truck types were considered for the truck loop including Elphinstone AD55Æs which are the truck type being used on site prior to the truck loop, CAT 775EÆs and power trailer road trains. This paper covers the philosophy behind the truck loop, the truck selection process, project installation and commissioning, people issues and the benefits expected by the operation. As of May 2002, the project is nearing completion, with decline haulage expected to commence in July 2002.

"With the recent advancement in drill core imaging systems, a large volume of high resolution drill core images can now be rapidly collected and mineralogically classified. This paper introduces a novel semi-automated method for rapid prediction of process engineering parameters from this type of image. The aim is to allow for a rapid and low-cost assessment of the ore processing variability within a mineral deposit with a reduced amount of metallurgical test work. This method will see its application primarily in the project evaluation phase, where proper evaluation of the processing variability of the orebody normally requires a prolonged and costly metallurgical test work program. Applying this image-based texture analysis method on the mineralogical classified drill core images, the ores are classified according to their textures. For each engineering parameter, a small number of physical test work is required to produce a data set for training and testing of the predictive model. Pacific Hydro, a leading renewable energy company from Australia, is developing a series of cascading run-of-river hydro electricity projects in the Cachapoal Valley at the base of the Andes Mountains some 100 km south of Santiago in Chile.These projects involve extensive tunnelling and underground works. The first of these projects is called Chacayes (110 MW installed capacity) and is now under construction with Astaldi SpA of Italy and Fe Grande of Chile as the EPC contractor. Astaldi SpA also has an equity stake in the project. It involves 6 km of tunnels between 5 m and 7 m diameter, of which 2.3 km is by tunnel boring machine (TBM) (5 m diameter).This paper outlines the local and regional geology, the scope of the Chacayes project, actual tunnel excavation rates and support, and compares the decision making on Chacayes between a choice of traditional drill and blast excavation versus TBM.The paper also outlines the next project planned to be developed by Pacifi c Hydro in the valley – the 140+MW Nido de Aguila project involving a main tunnel drive of 11 km with two intermediate adits, plus a 388 m shaft and underground powerhouse. The main tunnel drives are likely to be excavated by two hard rock TBMs (5 m diameter) but will need to be able to withstand high overburden pressures of up to 1300 m.Subsequent projects in the planning stages include the downstream Coya II project with two tunnels totalling approximately 10 km, one of which may be by TBM.

This paper is concerned with the design and operation of storage and discharge facilit- ies for bulk solids handling. It presents an overview of the basic design philisophy emphas- ising the influence of bulk solid flow propert- ies and bin geometry on the flow patterns developed and how these, in turn, affect the reclaim efficiency and the bin structural in- tegrity and wear characteristics of both bins and chutes. The salient aspects of feeder design and operation will be discussed and the need to consider feeders as integral parts of the bin discharge system will be stressed.

The most frequently applied project evaluation criteria are the Net Present Value, the Internal Rate of Return, and the Pay Back Period. Unfortunately, the Internal Rate of Return and the Pay Back Period, if interpreted according to their traditional definitions, easily produce results which contradict the Net Present Value. The reasons for the Net Present Value incompatibility of the two criteria are that these criteria have not been adequately defined and so new, complete definitions are recommended. The concept of the True Rate of Return is proposed as a substitute for the interest rate that the Internal Rate of Return has been believed to represent. The redefined Internal Rate of Return and Pay Back Period criteria, as well as the True Rate of Return are all Net Present Value compatible and can, therefore, serve as independent project evaluation criteria. Also, the correct approach to the evaluation of mutually exclusive alternatives and the status of the often neglected borrowing projects in project evaluation are found to be quite important.

Air blasts or wind blasts as they are termed in underground coal mining, occur in a number of types of underground mining where a void develops and the overlying or adjacent rock fails rapidly to allow the development of a high pressure air pulse. The effects of air blast vary widely from very low consequence to high consequence events causing multiple fatalities as occurred at North Parkes mine. The aim of this paper is to examine the phenomena of air blasts and the underlying parameters which determine the severity of the air blast event. A basic model under development is then detailed. The aim of the model is to determine the magnitude of the pressure pulse(s) developed during an air blast event. This, combined with a transient ventilation network analysis model will enable the airflows and associated pressure drops to be determined and allow the pressure pulse around the mine to be evaluated. The overall aim is to allow mining engineers and mine ventilation engineers to undertake a risk assessment of air blasts at individual mine sites, allowing working parameters to be changed to eliminate or reduce air blasts, or engineering controls to be developed to reduce the effects of air blasts.CITATION:Tuck, M A, 2013. The Bendigo goldfield is centred on the urban area of Bendigo (population approximately 60 000) in central Victoria, 130 km north west of Melbourne, Australia. Gold was discovered at Bendigo in 1851 and production continued through to 1954. The Bendigo goldfield is the second largest goldfield in total gold produced in Australia, after KalgoorlieÆs Golden Mile with a total production of 22 million oz. The geology of the Bendigo Field consists of a series of tightly folded, interbedded sandstone and shale sediments. Within the sediments the gold mineralisation is hosted in quartz reefs or ribbons closely associated with anticline axes and reverse faulting. The gold within the quartz reefs is typically both coarse grained and erratically distributed.

The Vanyukov Process is a high-intensity smelting system that has been proven over the last 20 years for various metallurgical operations including the smelting of copper, nickel, copper-zinc, antimony concentrates, municipal waste treatment and pig-iron production. Extensive pilot plant tests on copper and copper-nickel concentrates have provided information for the design of the commercial furnaces. The thermodynamic analysis, design idea and the data obtained from commercial furnaces have shown that Vanyukov Process would be the best choice to smelt copper-nickel and nickel sulphide concentrates as well as oxide nickel ores.

During trials which began in May 2005, traditional steel dump bodies for transporting iron ore on 220-tonne haul trucks at a Labrador iron ore mine were compared to a novel rubber suspended dump body. Loads were measured and compared over some 93 700 loads, representing more than 20 Mt transported. Maintenance costs and downtime were also measured over the course of the trial, which lasted nearly one year. This paper outlines the parameters and results of the trials. Parameters measured included payload and production improvements, carry-back reduction, downtime due to body maintenance, and wear on the floor of the suspended dump body. These parameters were then compared to those for conventional steel dump bodies in use at the mine, and conclusions were drawn. The resulting comparisons were significantly positive in favour of the new suspended dump bodies, confirming that each truck could haul an additional 41 000 tonnes per year, that downtime hours could be considerably reduced, and that body availability and service life can be extended through use of the suspended dump body. There was also a high level of operator acceptance of the suspended dump bodies due to less loading shock and a smoother ride.

The Early Proterozoic metamorphic rocks of the Broken Hill (BH) Block have been recently subdivided into sixteen formations and four groups (Willis et al., 1983b, Stevens et al., 1983). This stratigraphic subdivision has relied upon recognition of distinctive mapped rock units and "associations" of mapped rock units, which characterize particular lithostratigraphic units. The rock units and rock unit associations define local ordered sequences which can be compared and correlated, thereby establishing the stratigraphic succession. In the Clevedale homestead, Thackaringa, BH City, Bores Mine-Freyers mine, Silver King mine, and Brewery Well areas, coherent stratigraphic successions have been interpreted. These areas illustrate the regional variability of the stratigraphic succession and facies changes within individual stratigraphic units. Stratigraphic type sections are located in the Thackaringa, Bores Mine-Freyers mine, Silver King mine, and Brewery Well areas. The principles of stratigraphic interpretation applied in the BH Block can be used in other areas of Willyama Supergroup outcrop such as the Euriowie, Olary and Mount Painter Blocks. The general technique may also have applicability to other highly deformed and metamorphosed terrains.
