Lake Kopiago is located some 71km northwest of Tari in the Southern Highlands Province and lies on the northern edge of the Papuan Fold Belt. The area is underlain by middle Miocene carbonate and fine grained clastic sediments intruded by late Miocene hornblende gabbros.Two mineral deposits occur to the south of Lake Kopiago. These are the Bisamu gold prospect and the Wunaki zinc-lead gossan.The Bisamu deposit consists of a calcic skarn assemblage which is geochemically anomalous in gold, silver, copper, zinc, cobalt, bismuth and tellurium. The prograde mineral assemblage includes garnet, clino-pyroxene and epidote whereas the retrograde assemblage includes epidote, quartz, actinolite and chlorite. Pyrrhotite is the dominant sulphide with minor pyrite and marcasite and trace chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Minor magnetite is also present. The Bisamu skarn shows many of the features typical of gold-skarn type mineral-isation.

During the past five years there has been a transformation in the operating costs which apply to narrow vein mining. Mechanised methods including sublevel uphole retreat and narrow vein cut and fill are now proven. Other methods, such as vein mining by horizontal drilling from a raise platform are currently being tried in Australia.The important factors which affect the cost and appropriateness of each method include: ore continuity, the planarity of the wall contacts, relative hardness of ore and wall rocks and the dip bf the deposit.Drawing on current operating costs from a number of mines and on recent feasibility studies, a methodology for estimating the costs of narrow vein mining is presented. These costs are then placed in their economic context with regard to ore grade and mining rate.

Today the application of computer programs for planning of mine-ventilation and for safety- analysis of ventilation systems is widespread practice in German mining. The computer program for network calculat- ion, developed at the "Mine Ventilation Testing Centre of the Westfalische Berggewerkschaft- skasse" allows the distribution of airflow and pressure in mines to be calculated. In a physically well founded manner it takes into account the natural ventilation as well as changes of volume-flow in the mine, which both are dependent on pressure and temperature. Compared to an incompressible treatment of the mine air these circumstances are of increasing importance with the increase of depth, air temperatures and fan-pressures'. This especial- ly holds for the calculation of airflows during failures of fans or for assessing the influence of open mine-fires on ventilation. The application of the program is very easy and its structure is made to fit the requirements of practice. For instance it takes into account the fan characteristics of all fans. The current emphasis within the mining industry to reduce the cost of production has stimulated interest in the field of maintenance and operational reliability of capital intensive mining equipuent. The failure consequences of these machines have major safety and economic implications for a mine operator. The reliability centered maintenance (RCM) approach has been found cost effective for equipment maintenance and for achieving high level system perform- ance by many organizations such as airline, military, chemical, process and manufac- turing industries. In this paper an attempt has been made to describe in brief the basic concepts of a RCM approach, the methods of RCM analysis and its cost effectiveness for maintenance of equipment. Since this approach is comparatively new for the mining industry, suitable examples are given to illustrate the case.

Many of the large refrigeration plants used in, the cooling systems on deep South African gold mines are situated on surface where they are exposed to seasonally and diurnally varying climatic conditions, and to a diurnally varying demand for cooling made by the mine. It has been traditional to accommodate the seasonal variation in climate by manual control applied to the plants at appropriate times of the year, and the plants have normally been specified to conform passively to the diurnal variations. This paper introduces new strategies for the active automatic control of the plants on a diurnal cycle, and shows that attractive benefits in energy and chilled water resource management can be accrued through the use of these strategies. The results have been derived through the modelling and simulation of a representative refrigeration plant.

Mesothermal gold deposits of southern Alaska and Westland, New Zealand have both formed at the seaward edge of major collisional zones in the Pacific basin. In Alaska, production of large fluid volumes correlates in time with the addition of heat into the lower parts of the accreted terranes in the late stages of collisional orogeny. This heat was critical for driving both the metamorphic reactions that released the large volumes of fluid that carried the gold, and the contemporaneous widespread anatexis and magmatism. In Alaska's Chugach terrane, this heat was produced by subduction of a spreading ridge beneath the North America continental margin in the Eocene. The resulting products were the S-type granites and gold-bearing veins. The similar widespread S-type plutonism and gold veining in Westland's Buller terrane suggest that a similar tectonic event could have triggered ore formation along the southeastern edge of Gondwanaland. Based on the Alaskan model, a Devonian or Early Carboniferous age is favoured for high volume metamorphogenic fluid generation and gold vein formation in Westland.

Research cruises by HMNZS 'Tui' (1986) and RV 'Moana Wave' (1987) investigated the geology, geophysics and seafloor mineral resources of Manihiki Plateau in the central Pacific Ocean.Manihiki Plateau is a large (500,000 km2) mid-ocean platform that rises 3000 m above the abyssal plains of surrounding ocean basins (depth -5500 m). Its foundation evolved about 112 Ma ago by massive outpouring of basaltic lavas at a plate triple junction. The plateau is blanketed by a 900 m thick sedimentary section comprising (i) mid-Late Cretaceous volcaniclastic sandstones / siltstones grading upwards to limestones / chalks and (ii) -500 m of Tertiary nanno-foram chalks and oozes. Cores from DSDP 317 drill-site on the Manihiki High Plateau indicate that the volcaniclastic sediments contain native copper and some thin beds rich in organic carbon.

Potential acid rock drainage from the destruction of metalliferous sulph-ides is recognised as a critical factor in the design and economics of any mining venture. While this realisation is relatively new, mining companies have embraced the issue with the aim of scientifically quantifying the magnit-ude of the problem, specific to indiv-idual properties.Coinciding with the development of the open pit mine at Porgera, a comprehensive assessment of the potent-ial for the formation of acid rock drainage was initiated in 1991. Detail-ed study of the mineralogical charact-eristics of all rock types, along with extensive test work to determine the maximum potential of rocks to generate and consume acid (known as acid base accounting or ABA), has been conducted. Correlating this with the known and interpreted geology of the open pit has indicated a strong relationship between rock type, sulphur content and the acid base character. This relationship is used daily as a simple, cost effective means for classification and management of the variety of material types produced from the minincx operation.

The Jameson flotation cell was developed jointly by Mount Isa Mines Limited and Professor GJ Jameson of the University of Newcastle. The cell has been used in a number of cleaning applications within Mount Isa Mines Limited. In 1989 Peko Mines tested the Jameson flotation cell at the Warrego concentrator to upgrade recleaner concentrate. 2 x 1.4 m diameter Jameson flotation cells were installed in 1990. This paper describes the testing, commissioning and operation of these Cells.

This paper overviews the recent research progress in predicting cutting performance using fracture mechanics principles. It is emphasised that rock fragmentation due to cutting is mainly a process of chip formation resulting from crack initiation and propagation or crack interaction for multi-tool cutting. This process can be simulated by using the well developed fracture mechanics criteria coupled to numerical methods. Fracture toughness is shown to be an important and useful parameter in quantifying cutting performance and in designing cutting tools. The paper concludes with discussions on the dynamic effects involved in rock cutting processes which should be taken into account for optimum cutting efficiency and tool design.

Complex ores, characterised by intimate intergrowths between minerals, have previously been treated by flotation with limited success. The most common problem has been that the liberation size is often finer than the lower size limit for selection flotation. A technique has been developed in which the problem is overcome by the use of a selective agglomeration procedure in which the values are coalesced with oil to a size suitable for flotation prior to introduction into the flotation machine. A complex lead ore was characterised by QEM*SEM mineralogy as having a mean galena liberation size of 15 ¦m. The best recovery of lead at 50 per cent Pb grade by standard flotation was 53 per cent. After application of the procedure, 86 per cent recovery was obtained after a single cleaner step. The oil functions as a bridging liquid in the presence of conventional collectors which render the mineral oleophillic.

Comalco Limited has recently completed construction of a $50 million kaolin plant at the site of its bauxite mining and industrial minerals operation at Weipa. The plant will produce 100,000 tonnes per annum of coating grade kaolin for the paper industry. Comalco produced the first coating kaolin from the deposit in 1979 on a trial basis. Since then a variety of quality coating grades with specific particle size distributions and brightness values have been prepared. Extensive drilling and bulk sampling of the deposit over eight years has shown that the ore body is large and of a high grade suitable for the production of premium quality coating kaolins. The processing plant technology was developed by Comalco in association with the European kaolin and equipment producer Amberger Kaolinwerke GmbH (AKW). The Weipa kaolin plant is the first of this size to be built in the Pacific Basin region and it will offer the region's paper-coating mills a stable and reliable source of high-quality kaolin, shipped from an established bulk loading port. The history of world nickel production has been affected significantly by the supply and demand situation and fluctuation of LME price of nickel metal. In the beginning of the 1980s, the decline of price and demand lead to the withdrawal of un-competitive producers and the shrinkage of the production capacity. During the same period, Sumitomo Metal Mining maintained the production level with continuous improvement of the traditional matte electrorefining process. However, Sumitomo has recognised that the continuous improvement alone does not promise us the ability to catch up with rapid changes in the world. In the meantime, Sumitomo intensively researched chloride hydrometallurgy and has developed the chloride process for the nickel refining. This includes the solvent extraction and chloride electrowinning in the mixed sulphide process and the chlorine leach of the anode slime arising from matte electrorefining. In the late-1980s, Sumitomo Metal Mining decided to develop a new nickel refining technology based on chloride hydrometallurgy. The new process was designed from the comprehensive aspects involving safety and the environment. Construction of the plant for the matte chlorine leach electrowinning (MCLE) process was commenced in 1991. The MCLE plant with a capacity to 2000 tonnes per month has been commissioned at Niihama since 1992. The process has provided high productivity, overall good economics and high quality of electrolytic nickel produced. After the establishment of the process, Sumitomo has maintained continuous improvement of the new process and has attained the best practice of the work classification.

British Coal has made a practical progressive approach to improving the reliability of its mining equipment. Reliability must be addressed at the specification stage but does not end there and routine procedures are used to procure equipment of adequate reliability. The techniques used to monitor and improve reliability during the operational phase of the equipment, providing engineers and operators with detailed printouts, together with the types of maintenance employed, ensure high levels of availability. Finally, the methods of repair and overhaul of British Coal equipment and systems ensure that the initial reliability targets outlined on the specification, can still be achieved.

In early-1989, subsidence due to voids at the top of previously filled stopes and stopes awaiting filling,began to threaten the 15 level fill conveyor horizon. This together with the need to maintain production targets meant that a method was required to significantly increase fill placement.Alternative methods of placing dry fill underground were investigated. One option was to drill 200 mm boreholes from surface directly into stopes 600 - 800 metres underground. A drilling program was successfully undertaken, and resulted in the placement of more than 800 000 tonnes of dry aggregate fill via four boreholes.This paper details the drilling program undertaken and discusses the difficulties encountered, the fill placement system and the project costs.

The role of metals in the economy is discussed with regard to the flow of metals through to final demand and is illustrated by data for seven metals. Factors influencing the changing pattern of metal consumption are described, including relative prices. A des- cription and discussion of current metal demand forecasting methodologies precedes a discussion firstly of broad economic trends and secondly of the evolving pattern of metal consumption relative to GDP (metal consumption intensity), as technology and other factors change and as economies mature. The tendency for metal consumption intensity to plateau and decline when economies reach a certain region of per capita GDP, following a rapid rise early in the industrial- ization process, is shown in comparative data for seven metals and six countries.
