A large hard rock rib pillar was recently preconditioned at Mt Charlotte mine using a novel blasting technique. The motivation for trialling this procedure was a history of past pillar failures, with associated seismicity. Design studies had shown that a new proposed pillar would be at risk of violent failure, and preconditioning was used in an attempt to reduce this risk. Preconditioning by blasting involves physically modifying a selected zone of ground in advance of mining, then forming the pillar so that it incorporates that zone of ground. The modified rock in the zone is intended to allow extra closure (yield) of the pillar in response to mining-induced stress changes. The ground modification was done by tight firing a blasthole array to fracture the rock. The blast design comprised pairs of pre-split blastholes to create a series of short cracks across the target zone, followed by main blastholes to fracture the rockmass between each pair of cracks. A monitoring program was used to establish whether or not the preconditioning was effective. It included conventional extensometers, stress change cells and closure stations, plus a seismic monitoring system. To-date, stoping is complete on one side of the pillar and has just commenced on the other. Results show significant movements within the preconditioned zone and on geological structures in the pillar, as well as lower stress in the pillar compared to an adjacent non-preconditioned site. The preconditioning technique can be applied elsewhere, provided its purpose, mechanism and side effects are understood. Benefits are likely to include more assured production, and successful pillar recovery even in high stress situations.

Today there are many different techniques of soil remediation used in Australia and throughout the world. This paper considers the thermal desorption remediation technique and, in particular, the application of high temperature filtration to the process. The thermal desorption technique involves the treatment of hydrocarbon (oil, petrol, etc) contaminated soil. The process involves heating the soil in a retort or kiln to drive off the volatile organic contaminants. The exit gas stream from the retort is subsequently passed through an after burner to thermally oxidise the hydrocarbons. This technique produces soil and combustion gas streams which are free of hydrocarbons. Due to the heating and agitation of the soil within the retort, soil particles become entrained in the hot gas stream. To avoid the blockage and fouling of the system's interim ductwork and the afterburner, high temperature filtration technology has been applied to remove these soil particulates without cooling the gas Stream.

In comparisons of a trial extruded brick containing 33 per cent coalwash and 67 per cent clay and a trial pressed brick containing 100 per cent coalwash with a standard extruded clay face brick, the mixed feed stock trial brick compared favourably with the standard brick. If a highly plastic clay is used to mix with the coalwash, satisfactory results are obtained in respect to dimension, strength, water absorption, efflorescence, resistance to salt attack, hardness, colour, weathering, mineralogy and porosity. Although a brick containing only coalwash can be successfully manufactured in a press, its mechanical and physical properties are inferior. This mixed feed stock brickmaking technology leads to the utilisation of a by-product with a potential saving of raw material costs. The extent of use is likely to depend on the proximity of the coal washery and the brickworks and the economicsof transportation costs.

The Prince Lyell Mine has been the major production source at Mount Lyell since under-ground mining commenced in 1972.Three lifts of stopes have been mined to date, with the fourth, the 40 Series lift, to commence production this year. As the mine has progressed deeper, the ore haulage system has evolved to accommodate the mine's economic circumstances while maximizing efficiency.In the first, or 10 Series lift of stopes, ore was removed from drawpoints by L.H.D. units and tipped directly into rakes of 7 tonne rail cars. The original concept for deeper stoping lifts entailed L.H.D.'s tipping into long ore passes, rail haulage, underground crushing and hoisting to surface via the No. 1 Shaft. The suspension of the No. 1 Shaft project in 1976, due to economic difficulties, lead to the intro-duction of diesel truck haulage of ore, initially via the internal Prince Lyell Decline and now to surface via the Main Decline.

The US Bureau of Mines is conducting research to improve the health and safety for underground coal miners, and the efficiency of the mining systems that are used. In 1986, the Bureau began a major research effort on the technology for computer-assisted mining systems for underground coal mines. The initial target was technology for continuous mining machines that would allow them to extract coal by computer-assisted operation. Technology areas being investigated include guidance systems, machine condition systems, computer systems, machine control, human-machine interfaces and planning. In each of these areas, individual system development has progressed to where underground testing of these systems will begin in 1991.In addition to coal extraction, the Bureau has also begun research for the development of technology for computer-assisted roof bolting. The Bureau is developing technology for a "smart" roof bolter that would be able to sense and analyze strata conditions to determine the requirements to provide a competent roof. The system would determine the location of the hole, drill the hole to length, and select and install the appropriate bolt.

There is an inherent problem in producing simultaneously lead, zinc and copper as metals in a single polymetallic smelting furnace. It relates to the condensation of lead and zinc from the gas phase under vacuum conditions such that metals in bulk form, either solid or liquid, are obtained as products rather than a fume or dust containing both metallic and non-metallic components. To understand this phenomenon, it has been necessary to establish mathematical models with computer simulation to identify the process requirements for effecting the objective of maximum bulk metal production with minimum fog formation. The theoretical framework of simultaneous heat and mass transfer involved in condensation from gas mixtures containing a non-condensable gas has been extended to the high temperature and reduced pressure conditions. These apply to new technology for polymetallic smelting now being developed in a project currently funded jointly by the Commission of the European Communities and the Mineral Industry Research Organisation. Under the right conditions it is theoretically possible to condense out both lead and zinc with minimal fume formation, but in all practical cases it is anticipated that some circulating load for reversion back to the smelter will be needed.

AND INTRODUCTION The Lochiel coal deposit, a large Tertiary soft brown coal deposit in the mid north of South Australia, is currently being investigated by the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) as a potential source of fuel for a base load power station. Feasibility studies indicated that the proposed dragline method of overburden removal was viable but economically sensitive to both highwail and dump batter angles. The unusual properties of the unconsolidated overburden sediments and the groundwater regime posed a number of intimately related hydrogeological and geotechnical questions which were addressed before and during the excavation of a trial pit. All strata at Lochiel are of soil strength, and artesian aquifers occur above and below the coal. From the initial evaluation of the deposit a number of hydrogeological questions were defined. These related to the rate at which the pore pressure in the silts is reduced by dewatering, the extent of the reduction in pore pressure due to prestripping, and the feasibility of dewatering and depressurising carbonaceous silty sand sequences. The site of the trial pit was selected to answer these and other questions from the basis of a detailed geological, hydrogeological and geotechnical understanding. The trial pit dewatering system simulated a full scale mine dewatering system and included ten pumped wells, twenty drainage wells, and nearly 400 monitoring instruments. It operated from September 1986 to June 1987. The excavation was carried out between February and May 1987.

Detailed cash flow forecasts have always been almost essential as a basis for judging the viability of proposed new mining projects. In recent years attempts have been made explicitly to take account, in such forecasts, of the uncertainties surrounding the assumptions upon which they are based. With the risk analysis approach, Monte Carlo simulation of the cash flows indicates in probability terms the combined effect of these uncertain basic assumptions. While the use of risk analysis has been widely discussed, few specific applications to real projects have been reported. The application of such an analysis in the feasibility study of the large new Deelkraal gold mine presently being established on the Far West Witwatersrand gold fields by the Gold Fields Group in South Africa is described in the paper. The paper also indicates how one of the major sources of uncertainty, namely the gold content of the ore, can be`quantified in objective probability terms. This feature distinguishes the application fran other published accounts in which only subjective probability assessments have been utilised.

The grinding characteristics of quartz which is normally associated with gold bearing ores in Kalgoorlie area was examined in a stainless steel laboratory size ball-mill in the presence of inorganic and organic surface active reagents. The cationic species considered were Fe3+, Cu2+ and Ca2+, and the anions were CO? and S2 as these are normally present during the process of grinding of gold ores in the region. The organic surfactants examined were K-amyl- xanthate, dodecylamine-hydrochloride and the Grinding Aid XFS-4272 manufactured by Dow Chemical The study was primarily based on an examination of the electrokinetic properties of quartz surface in the presence of the grinding reagents. Zeta potential at different reagent additions and pH values in the presence of individual reagents were examined and the corresponding grinding charcteristics determined. The mineralogy, maero- and micro-textures of Thackaringa ore are simple and have many counterparts among base metal-quartz-siderite vein type deposits elsewhere.The ore consists predominantly of galena, sphalerlte, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, and arsenopyrite in a quartz and siderite gangue. Silver minerals, as such, appear to be lacking and silver values are no higher than in other sulphide ores of this type. These features contrast very markedly with those of the A.B.H. Consols Lode which appears to have emanated from the north end of the Broken Hill Main Lode Horizon during high grade regional metamorphism. The Consols Lode has been regarded as of Thackaringa type, and both are regarded as possibly arising from the remobilization of Main Lode Horizon ore. Whilst this may yet prove to be so it appears that the marked differences in mineral composition between the Consols and the Thackaringa types, would require somewhat different modes of regeneration.Thackaringa ore, as well as A.B.H. Consols ore, on this basis, would necessitate the development of a metahydrothermal ore fluid to account for their present apparently hydrothermal (or pseudo-hydrothermal) constitution...

Modem blast initiation systems allow users many options for connection and application in the field, and have resulted in more innovative and complex uses of sequencing to influence blast outcomes. However, no tool existed which allowed the blaster to easily and quickly assess the effect of different options. The original requirement was for a computer program which allowed the easy input of blast patterns and the associated initiation sequence, and then permitted the evaluation of different options with respect to established criteria such as the number of holes per delay and angle of initiation. The implementation of this goal saw the development of the SHOTPIan blast sequence design software, with particular emphasis on an easy-to-use menu driven interface and visualisation of the blast sequence. Extensive trialling during development saw the incorporation of additional features requested by industry such as the ability to import from established mine design software packages, and further features such as the calculation of burden relief times. Case studies of the use of the program are provided, where the rapid evaluation of a number of options has enabled blast results to be optimised. Exploration on the Callide Coalfield by Thiess Bros. Pty. Limited had reached the stage in mid 1976 where there was a need for a comprehensive appraisal of the coalfield geology. Exploration strategy in 1977 - 1978 was defined by the selection of the most attractive targets. All available literature, reports and plans were reviewed and borehole records assessed. The geology of the coalfield was placed in its regional setting and the genesis of the Callide Coal Measures described in a structural and sedimentological context. Their general form and extent was then examined by the technique of stratigraphic analysis through the interpolation and extrapolation of the available data. A "localized" reserve classification was drawn up and reasonable estimates of the various geological reserves produced, in terms of their reliability and depth of overburden. Quality trend maps were also produced. The resultant "base map" was virtually a summation of all the information to June, 1977, and the basis for the exploration programme in the 1977 - 1978 financial year. The technique allowed for "base maps" to be produced at almost any stage, each one a refinement of its Predecessor.

A Seam deposit User oriented Mine Planning System (SUMPS) was developed by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) at its head office in Melbourne. It is one of the computer mine planning systems developed by the Corporate Data Processing (CDP) section of BHP. To date it has been employed in the feasibility study of four coal prospects for the BHP Group, including Gregory in central Queensland - Ham and Van Hoorn (1978). It was also used in detailed short term mine planning for Gregory. A recent application was in the feasibility study of Saxonvale, a multi seam coal deposit in New South Wales with seams up to 20 m thick. The other two applications of SUMPS were also on thick multi seam coal deposits. Development of programs for the underground sub-section of SUMPS is continuing. SUMPS was developed and implemented on mini computers with graphics and plotting peripherals. The company's philosophy towards computing is one of centralized development and project planning, with transfer of hardware and software to site once the mine becomes Operational.

Three-dimensional microscopic modelling techniques involving specific calculations based on direct computation of the Brownian, van der Waals, Born, electrical double layer repulsion, bulk, hydrodynamic and external forces (gravity, magnetic etc) acting on and between each particle in a mineral dispersion are now feasible using advanced computer processor architectures. This contribution surveys the hardware requirements, the advantages and limitations of the approach for enabling prediction of dispersion behaviour a priori. The notion of developing a generic particle simulator, akin to the use of molecular modelling in the area of drug design, based on inputting process-relevant data (solution chemistry, mineral solids properties, hydrodynamics etc) is discussed. The methodology is illustrated with application examples involving: predictions of coagulation of mineral fines; shape and size of magnetically-flocculated hematite; and the kinetics of fouling of membrane surfaces and walls.

The Glenrock Group forms the uppermost part of the Early Devonian to Early Carboniferous Burdekin Basin sequence in the Townsville hinterland, north Queensland. As redefined, three formations make up the Glenrock Group. The Percy Creek Volcanics (base), the dominantly epiclastic Mount Douglas Formation, and the Horse Pocket Volcanics (top). The Ellenvale beds unconformably overlie the Mount Douglas Formation and Percy Creek Volcanics and have been excluded from the Glenrock Group as defined by Wyatt and Jell (1980). Three facies associations are recognised in the Mount Douglas Formation: Alluvial Plain facies, Alluvial Fan facies and Lacustrine facies.Deposition of the Glenrock Group, began with the eruption of massive basalt and basaltic andesite lavas, probably in a volcanic arc setting. With time, the volcanism evolved to become more dacitic to rhyolitic in composition. Waning of the volcanic activity appeared to coincide with uplift of source areas (probably to the west). Deposition on an alluvial plain during this waning volcanic cycle, gave way to alluvial fans at the margins of the uplifted terrain. As the uplift ceased and the system became more mature, the alluvial fans gave way to widespread lakes. Rhyolitic ignimbrite and airfall tuff, interbedded with the alluvial plain, alluvial fan and lacustrine facies, indicate that some volcanism continued, probably vented in the uplifted terrain to the west.

The Comstock Lode, a world-class precious metal vein district near Virginia City in western Nevada, U.S.A. (Fig. 1), produced 8.3 million ounces (0.28 X 106 kg) of gold and 193 million ounces (6.56 X 106 kg) of silver during the period 1859 to present (Bonham and Papke, 1969). More than 95% of production was from the Comstock fault, while the adjacent Silver City, Occidental and Flowery vein systems produced about $10 million (U.S.). Within the Comstock fault high-grade ore bodies, or bonanzas, were distributed over 2.3 miles (3.8 km) along strike and persisted to >3000 feet (>900 m) below the surface (Fig. 2). Bonanzas consisted of as much as 1.4 million tons (1.3 million tonnes) of ore grading up to 1.9 oz./ton (65 gm/ton) Au and 30 oz./ton (1020 gm/ton) Ag (Table 1). Some bonanzas occurred in the main Comstock fault plane while others, including the highest grade bonanzas, formed in hangingwall frac- tures. After 1880 most ore consisted of lower-grade vein material surrounding mined- out bonanzas and large volumes of mineralized vein and wall rock in the Comstock hanging- wall that were mined from open cuts. Deep mining was hindered by large quantities of hot water and bad ground which ultimately defined the limits of underground production. The widths and richness of Comstock bonanzas strongly influenced U.S. mining law, milling and underground mining methods, and securi- ties regulations that are in practice today. Within the district Mesozoic metasedimentary rocks, metavolcanic rocks, and granitic in- trusions are overlain by Miocene volcanic rocks (Thompson and White, 1964). Veins cut all lithologies. Underground mining in the Bowen Seam has shown that the majority of outbursts have co- incided with faults, igneous dykes and sills, stone roof rolls or some combination of these. The coal measures are deformed principally by N- S trending, easterly dipping thrusts presumed to he associated with the major, reverse Collins- ville Fault. The old Collinsville State Mine records suggest that thrusts and strike-slip faults have been common sites of outbursts. In contrast, normal faults have not been outburst- prone. Detailed geological mapping in Bowen No. 2 Colliery 53 east and west panels has been carried out in the hanging wall of a thrust zone of 6.1 m throw. The associated sheared coal has been defined and several fracture sets delin- eated. Sheared coal can be observed up to 170 m from this thrust zone, but this is dependent on the vitrinite content of the upper seam section worked. Fvidence indicates that outbursts have crnrroJ only in extremely sheared coal. Curious spherical- to cylindrical-shaped c,,.31 ohjects ("apples" and "rods") are related to the deformation in the vicinity of the thrust zone. The requirement for economic operation of unit trains carrying bulk materials has dictated that rapid and accurate bulk loading methods be provided. The train loading station at Phosphate Hill, built for Queensland Phosphate Ltd. to load rock phosphate, provides this facility and whilst the concept used is not unique, it contains a number of novel features that are considered to advance the "state of the art'' in this field. This paper briefly reviews some alternative concepts evaluated, and describes the design and operation of the scheme ultimately selected as being most appropriate to the project requirements. it is one which utilises a variable speed belt feeder whose speed is controlled in proportion to the weight rate of material moving on the belt as measured against a set point

The photoresponse of natural mineral pyrite and galena electrodes has been studied in aqueous solutions on freshly fractured surfaces (some fractured in situ) using moderate overvoltages. When fractured in situ, the electrode potential of both minerals instantly drops several tenths of a volt. Pyrite exhibits a spontaneous anodic photocurrent at fracture, which indicates upward band bending (depletion layer) on the n-type electrodes. The negative surface charge responsible for the depletion layer is believed to arise from a surface state that is intrinsic to pyrite surfaces, possibly modified by hydroxide ion adsorption. The flat band potential, Vty, of pyrite is at approximately -1.0 V (SCE) at pH 9.2 but to reach V(b, pyrite has to be cathodically decomposed. In contrast, galena assumes the flat band potential at fracture. Subsequent polarisation of galena at potentials positive of Vth produces an anodic photocurrent (upward band bending) and polarisation negative of Vro a cathodic photocurrent. Most of the galena electrodes studied were degenerate n-type and at potentials negative of Vtb, no cathodic photocurrents are observed, indicating the bands cannot be bent downward, consistent with the Fermi level at the surface merging with the conduction band edge near Vn,. Several were close to intrinsic, with the photocurrent changing sign near Vn,.

Several classes of commercial explosives and blasting agents behave non-ideally, especially in diameters near their critical diameter. A direct and convenient measure of non-ideal behavior is the detonation velocity (VOD); if the VOD is less than the ideal value, usually obtained by calculation, then the explosive is detonating in the non-ideal mode. Such lowering of the VOD is usually due to both lateral loss of energy and post-CJ release of energy. The second of these factors, namely slow release of chemical energy, is of most interest in blasting. While the observation of a low VOD clearly suggests slow reaction of part of the explosive composition, it does not necessarily mean that the energy is lost to the overall rock-breaking process. The partition of the energy of the explosive into various useful and wasteful categories is considered. Simple models of energy partition in blasting, and of explosive reaction kinetics, are presented. The models consider the effect of explosive type and rock type, the explosive being described in terms of the most common phases namely liquid, air bubbles, porous ammonium nitrate, dense or crystalline ammonium nitrate, and aluminum. Over a range of combinations of the above phases, the model predicts reasonable critical diameters and VOD's. Results are presented which show the effects of non-ideal detonation on fragmentation and heave in different rock types. Conclusions are drawn about those blasting conditions in which ideal behavior is beneficial, or Disadvantageous.
