For utilization of solid carbonaceous materials produced in processes of cracking heavy oil, such as petroleum pitch, as powder fuel, it is necessary to develop a process for fine grinding of these materials. It is known that grinding' additives are effective for fine grinding of cohesive and heat-sensitive materials such as petroleum pitch, therefore in this study, effective methods for fine grinding of petroleum pitch with some grinding additives were investigated. Experiments were carried out by using comminution kinetics based on mass balance. From the results of the investigation by using a batch ball mill, it was found that sodium stearate, calcium stearate and carbon black were effective additives for the improvement of grinding efficiency. Optimum concentration of the grinding additives was also found to give a required particle size of products. Concerning to the action mechanism of these additives, it is considered that the additives which adhired to, or were absorbed on the surface of petroleum pitch particles not only prevented cohesion of the particles but improved dispersion of the particles as well. From the results of the investigation by using a laboratory screen mill which is a representative built-in classifiered impact crusher, carbon black was found to be an effective additive for the improvement of grinding efficiency and mill performance. It is also considered that the improvement of classification efficiency by carbon black affected the mill performance.

An image analysis system has been built which automatically digitizes camera input of rock fragments, analyses the digitised data to determine the sizes and shapes of the rock fragments, and outputs the analysed data to a printer in the form of a histogram or a scatter chart. The high speed of such a system allows for direct collection of data from material thrown into the air by blasting, material travelling on a conveyor belt, and material free-falling on to a stock-pile or into or out of a rock-crusher. Data on the blasted, un-crushed material provides information on changes in the lithology and structure of the rock face as it is quarried or mined: flatter fragments may represent approach to a brittle, unstable shear zone, or a change from sandstone to shale; so that the informa- tion reflects the effect on the sizes and shapes of the fragments by the blasting process and/or by the rock structure. The size and shape distributions of rock fragments produced during blasting and during processing may now be continuously monitored. Such detailed analysis of the results of fragmentation is labour-intensive and expensive when the size and shape distributions are obtained manually, but is cheap and efficient when using this image analysis system. Such a system will enable the results of blasting, quarrying, mining and crushing to be cheaply analysed and correlated with current and changing indus- trial practice so leading the way to increased productivity.

Better quality at lower cost is today's formula for remaining competitive in a world market. For an integrated steel company, high quality low cost steel production must originate before the blast furnace. In 1979, when U.S. Steel initiated a Quality Management Program throughout its steelmaking operations, efforts began at the coal, ore and flux mines. The objective was to improve the quality and reduce the variability of the critical parameters for steelmaking raw materials, to get the blast furnaces, and subsequently the melt shops, under optimum control. The general details of U.S. Steel's Quality Management Program are discussed and how it was used to promote the desired improvements in steelmaking raw materials. Some of the outstanding results obtained by the cooperative efforts between the mines and the steel plants are reported. The lessons learned by U.S. Steel were through upgrading existing operations and facilities. These principles should now be applied to new projects and the benefits of good quality management should commence from the time new projects are Commissioned.

It is quite well known, although not so well documented, that radio noise is generated during rock fracture. Radio noise has also been observed during severe earthquakes. The source has been thought to be the fracturing of the rock, although the mechanism has never been unequivocably proven. A study of these radio emissions may provide insight into rock dynamics prior to seismic events, and after blasting. A programme of electric-field recordings has been undertaken at Brisbane quarries during multi-hole blasting. Preliminary analysis has shown that three types of signal may be distinguished. They are hole detonation, rock fall and post blast relaxation signals. It is thought that information about the blast, and the fracture of the rock, may be ascertained from these Signals.

Factors influencing Cost, systems available for transporting minerals, particularly on land, and methods used for comparing costs are reviewed. A case study presents comparative costs graphically for coal haulage, assumed in Queensland, by 31-6" gauge rail, belt conveyor, 120 ton road train, slurry pipeline, and transmission of electrical energy by transmission line. The effect on comparative results of alternative methods of including initial capital and capital replacement costs is considered and approximate break-even points between systems, bearing in mind the assumptions taken, are discussed.

Interest in the sampling of refined copper cathodes has heightened over the last ten years. This has followed the increasing importance of cathodes as the principle trading form for metallic copper. It has also been given impetus by recent trends for quality certification of manufacturing inputs, specifically the AS3900 and IS09000 series of standards.

Grade control is an important factor in the on-going success of a mining operation. Grade control criteria will vary depending on the commodity being mined. Financial considerations determine the actual grade control criteria at any one mine site. Mining and metallurgical capital and operating costs are ultimately used in ascertaining cut-off grades employed in grade control. The metallurgical characteristics of the ore, and ultimately the equipment selection and design of the plant, are based on samples provided by the exploration geologist. Ore variability is an important factor in designing the process plant. Ore variations, outside of those catered for in the design, as well as large ore changes on a daily basis, will impact on the metallurgical performance, and hence the economics of a mining operation. Therefore good liaison between the grade control geologist and metallurgist will undoubtedly lead to a more consistent, and more profitable mining operation.

Large scale cut and fill mining in narrow silver-lead-zinc orebodies began at Mount Isa in 1964. Initially each orebody was one stope and access was via raises from the level above. Upholing was the principal mining method, although flatbacking was employed where ground conditions were more difficult. Developments since have included access via footwall inclines and connection of all stopes with major crosscuts. Flatbacking is the principal method. The most recent cut and fill operation is now fully mechanised using drilling jumbos, rockbolting jumbos and load-haul-dump units. Improved ground support and drilling and blasting practices have enhanced safety, recovery and productivity in all cut and fill operations.

The methods employed in dressing 'the tin ore up to the required percentage of purity depend mainly on the type of ore crushed.These may be briefly divided into two distinct classes-viz., q, free: milling ore and a complex milling ore. In the former the ore is practically free from the common metallic sulphides, such as pyrites, mispickel, blende, galena, etc., and 1!' clean concentrate of 70 per cent metallic tin can be directly obtained in one continuous act of concentration; in the latter, however, in order to get a good extraction, it is only advisable to primarily concentrate up to 30 to 40 per cent. tin oxide, the rest being the sulphides of the metals. This concentrate is then roasted, re-ground, and re-concentrated up to 70 per cent. metallic tin on a separate set of tables.In the complex milling ore the tin is intermixed very closely with the sulphides, so that it becomes necessary to collect all the mineral present in order to obtain clean tailings. Stamp mills are the most popular machines for the primary crushing in the district, but whether they are invariably the best for the purpose is rather an open question. No doubt for some of the very tough chloritic ores they are the most efficient, but for a brittle quartzose ore, such as the free milling proposition usually is, the writer thinks Oornish rolls would well hold their own, especially when the tin occurs coarse, as is so often the case with this class of ore. A history is given of the dust control techniques developed and applied by the mining companies at Broken Hill. A history of the regeneration works undertaken since 1936 is out- lined. Particular emphasis is placed on the stabilization of mine residue dumps which are located throughout a belt of mining leases in the middle of the city and which began in 1937. The establishment of vegetation for dust control techniques is discussed in detail and a case study is given of the successful revegetation of the sides of a 650 metre long, 350 metre wide and 35 metre high residue dump.

Magnetite deposits with distinctive ¦ actinolite ¦ apatite -bearing gangue and spatially-extensive sodic-calcic wall rock alteration occur in both Proterozoic metamorphic terrains and Mesozoic-Tertiary magmatic arcs. Examples from both settings constitute significant sources of iron ore (e.g. Kiruna, Sweden; El Romeral, Chile) and some host major Cu-Au deposits that have a local association with K-silicate alteration (e.g. Cloncurry district, NW Queensland; Copiapo district, Chile). A growing body of evidence points to a hydrothermal origin for these systems involving high temperature, low S oxidized fluids. The Cloncurry magnetite-Cu-Au deposits are products of the local structurally channelized influx of a specialized high salinity ore fluid into larger-scale alteration systems developed during pluton emplacement at greater depths than those associated with subvolcanic (porphyry) Cu-Au deposits. The geological characteristics of deposits in magmatic arcs are consistent with a similar mode of origin albeit in rather different tectonic settings.

Following asmallnumberofpollutionincidents involving the death of cattle from ingestion of cyanide that had escaped from gold processing plants, the Queensland Government undertook to develop competent guidelines addressing this problem. These guidelines, "Queensland Government Guidelines on Prevention of Water Pollution from Cyanide Use in Gold Ore Processing", issued by the Department of Environment and Heritage, Department of Resource Industries and Water Resources Commission, cover hydrology and general house-keeping intended to reduce the likelihood of significant impact from a spill or unintentional dis- charge of contaminated material. There are three major advances for Queensland embodied in this Guideline: ò the use of a design approach that gives site specific standards rather than trying to give a multitude of standards broad enough to cover all situations, ò the use of hazard assessment and a "critical period" hydrologi- cal design technique, and ò new monitoring and reporting requirements. Chalcopyrite samples from two different localities were leached in oxygenated mixed chloride-sulphate lixivants at elevated temperatures and atmospheric pressure. The oxidation of chalcopyrite was found to follow predominantly linear kinetics. The slope of the major region was dependent on stirring rate, oxygen flowrate and chloride concentration while only slightly dependent on the surface area of the sample leached. This region was found to predominate only at low temperatures. The oxidised chalcopyrite releases cuprous and ferric ions into solutions. Chloride ions complex these dissolved ions to effectively move the equilibrium of the leaching reaction to the right. When the level of chloride in solution was below 6 g/l, the unstable cuprous ions were found to reprecipitate with sulphur as covellite. When no chloride was present and the lixivant was a solution of sulphuric acid then ferric sulphates precipitated. The overall leaching reaction occurring in the leaching system is: CuFeS2 + 5H+ + 1.25 02 = Cu 2+ + Fe 3+ + 2S¦ + 2.5H20

Australia contains a variety of iron ores, differing in grade, chemistry, size distribution and genesis. While a proportion of this ore is used world-wide as blast furnace lump, much of the material mined is high grade fines, requiring agglomeration (usually sintering) before blast furnace reduction. Sintering studies initially concentrated on the production of ferrous material of high iron content, coarse size and sufficient cold strength. In recent years research involving pilot plant sintering, precise test procedures and mineralogical analyses has focussed on the additional sinter properties of hot strength and reducibility. Aspects of mineralogical studies applied to iron ore sintering are described.

Gravity concentration of tin at Renison Limited uses tables and spirals to treat the various coarser fractions produced from sulphide flotation tailing. An acceptable final tailing cannot be made from one pass over the tables and spirals and therefore the tailing from these separators is reground and combined with the sulphide flotation tailing as the feed to the classification section. The gravity section became increasingly overloaded in the years preceding 1976 due to efforts to maximize tin recovery to the gravity concentrate. In April, 1976, two 2DSV Reichert cone concentrators in series were installed to treat the table and spiral tail- ing stream, prior to regrind, to scavenge a small tonnage of hard, coarse low tin grade material for rejection to final tailing. Gravity section loadings were decreased markedly, allowing operator attention to be directed more to table performance than to spillage collection. An increase in mill throughput of approximately 15% was possible following the commissioning of the Reichert cones. The cones are currently operated to make the minimum tonnage of tailing consistent with reasonable- gravity section loadings.

Any project carries a number of challenges and risks. Inappropriate design, poor project management, time, industrial disputation and capital over runs are all areas which can impact on a project cash flows and return on investment. In the resource Industry you have the added complexity and risk of geology which is difficult to predict and sometimes unforgiving. The Dartbrook Mine was designed and constructed as a high output longwall mine and has overcome a number of hurdles to produce over 2.3 million tonnes for the first year of operation. A number of problems were encountered during construction which resulted in the inseam development being delayed for six months. Dartbrook people have demonstrated they can manage adversity and produce world class results. The mine has been through a very steep learning curve during 1997 and with this experience behind the mine is now producing at an annualised rate of 3.4 MTPA.

The quality of the rock mass in which an excavation is being driven has a strong influence on the level of dynamic forces to which the excavation can be subjected and sustain damage. Though each specific rock mass occurrence is unique yet there are common rock mass features which influence the outcome of controlled blasting in a similar way. A field study was conducted which involved assessment of blast damage at several operating mines and the blasting of small-scale models. The effects of block size and strength, joint parameters, ground water, weathering of rocks and rock mass rating on the results of controlled blasting have been investigated and discussed in this study.

The establishment of vegetation onto open cut mine spoil is dependant on the nature of the soil and rock strata of the overburden. Experience has shown that in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland the nature of the minespoil changes considerably as subsequent and deeper mining strips intercept changing rock strata. The different mixes of strata at the surface of reshaped spoilpiles can produce variable response in the sown vegetation cover. It is usual that land features of mine sites are known in detail and are depicted on mine or locality maps. Subsurface strata and lithology descriptions are available and are used for planning of open cut mining operations. Surface and subsurface data can also be used to estimate the intrinsic nature of overburden through the use of fence diagrams. Lithology at points along a mined strip can be obtained and used to describe overburden. Indications are that correlations exist between salinity of overburden components and the response of vegetation. The developed procedure thus becomes a useful tool for the prediction of revegetation Practices.

This paper describes the ENVIB software system, which has been developed in a menu-driven form to aid in the monitoring and assess- ment of vibration caused by routine blasting operations and for research and development projects. The paper gives an outline of the capabilities of the system by means of screen-dumps and a general descriptive commentary. Technical notes have been added where appropriate to further describe the system. The ENVIB system covers: I . Analysis of blast vibration results, and preparation of graphs and tables for control and estimation purposes. 2. Effects of atmospheric conditions and air vibration propagation. 3. Real-time acquisition and analysis of analogue blast vibration sig- nals directly from transducer equipment or from FM tapes. 4. Analysis of digital files on floppy disc or transferred via the serial port from blast monitoring equipment. 5. Transfer function calculation for structure response studies.
