Formation of gold-bearing veins in Otago Schist was intimately linked to the structural evolution of the schist belt. The currently-exploited Macraes gold deposit formed in a regional scale shear zone during latemetamorphic uplift of the schist belt. Further exploration for this type of deposit will be facilitated by an increased understanding of the late-metamorphic structural evolution of the schist belt. To this end, a three-dimensional cross section through the Otago Schist has been drawn using structural data gathered at outcrops in a 20 - 40 km wide transect across central Otago. This is the first continuous detailed structural section to be drawn through the belt. The section spans an area from Textural Zone 1 metagreywacke of the Torlesse terrane in the northeast through TZ 4 schist in the central region and across the Caples-Torlesse boundary to Textural Zone 3 schist of the Caples terrane in the southwest. Two different late-metamorphic structural generations are identified in this section: the long-recognised Manorburn Generation, and a new æPoolburn GenerationÆ. The location of the Caples-Torlesse boundary has been refined on this transect by field mapping combined with whole rock geochemistry.

The Morning Star diorite dyke has been subjected to two periods of mineralization. The earlier, genetically related to the dyke magma, gave rise to a weak chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-pentlandite-gold mineralization in a narrow zone, up to 25 cm. wide, which parallelsthe nearby western (hanging) wall of the dyke. Subsequently a set of conjugate shears formed in the dyke as a result of tectonic movements. Gold-quartz veins formed in these shears giving rise to the classical "ladder veins" of the Morning Star mine. On either side of the veins ("floors") the diorite has been bleached for up to 3 ft. This involved introduction of much CO. and some K"O, and S with abstraction of SiO. and FeO, giving rise to carbonates, sericite, zoisite and pyrite. The veins consist of quartz with minor amounts of albite and carbonate, together with pyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, tetrahedrite, galena, bournonite, boulangerite and gold. Spectrographic analyses of gold show that the suite of trace elements is consistent throughout the mine.INTRODUCTIONThe gold-quartz veins of the Morning Star Gold Mine, at Wood's Point, Victoria, are a classic example of the "ladder vein" type of deposit. The structure of this series of repeating quartz veins or "floors", some barren and some productive, occurring in a set of conjugate shears which transect a "dyke bulge" of diorite (Fig. 1), has been described on numerous occasions as mining has progressed and figures in the textbooks (Whitelaw, 1905; 1916; Junner, 1920; Lindgren, 1933; McKinstry, 1935; 1942; 1949; Kenny, 1949; Hills, 1952; Clappison, 1953) ; but there has been no study of the mineralization apart from that in Junner's (1920) general study of the Walhalla-Wood's Point Goldfield, made at a time when mining had not developed below the 400 ft. level,. and the mine was dormant.

Although bismuth mineralization is spread widely through the Lachlan Fold Belt in New South Wales, broad grouping of the various deposits can be effected on the basis of geographical and geological (age and type of associated rocks) affinities. As a result, significant concentrations of bismuth can be recognized in the Mid-Western granites, Cobar-type ore, the Yass Silurian acid volcanic belt, and the Albury, Bega, Braidwoodand Bathurst districts.In these deposits bismuth generally occurs in minor amounts associated with molybdenite, wolframite, scheelite, cassiterite, chalcopyrite, galena, magnetite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, and native gold. From this group of minerals three broadly defined associations can be recognized.I. Bi-Sn-W-Mo2. Bi-Au( -Te)3. Bi-Pb-Cu(-Au)There may be some interchangeability of these metals, as instanced by occasional Bi-Cu-W-Mo mirleralization, but pyrite and/ or arsenopyrite are usually prominent in all associations.The first two of these associations occur mainly in the form of narrow quartz veins rarely averaging more than O· 3 per cent Bi, although there is often a marked enrichment in ferruginous material in the oxidized zone.Most of these veins occur within or adjacent to granitic rocks of varying ages (principally Silurian or Devonian), although Bi-Au mineralization tends to be related to more basic igneous activity than the Bi-Sn-W-Mo association.The latter is also occasionally developed in pipes, usually coarse-grained and richer in bismuth (as at Whipstick, the principal mine in New South Wales with a production of 343 tonnes of the metal), or in lower grade, but probably larger tonnage skarn deposits. The bismuth-base metal association occurs mainly in Silurian acid volcanic sequences and may also form low grade but large tonnage deposits, such as is possibly developed at Cobar.

The Ridgeway gold mine has been an enigma of the international underground hard rock community for nearly 20 years. It nearly didn’t eventuate as it was more than 500 m below a farmer’s paddock in Central New South Wales when the exploration team, looking for open pit deposits, got a sniff on its last attempt and then drilled the high-grade discovery hole. It took separate studies to find an economic mining approach. Newcrest, then a mid-tier mining company, took the venture that set it on a path of growth and built what was to become the backbone of the company for the next 15 years.The initial mining method was sublevel caving (SLC) for the upper 300 m of the orebody. The nameplate production rate for the SLC was 4 Mt/a, which was reached in June 2002 shortly after the commissioning of the materials handling system. The ultimate production rate was subsequently lifted to around 6 Mt/a through a series of innovative and efficiency initiatives. In June 2007, approval was granted for the development of a block cave (BC) operation to extract the ore reserve situated immediately below the existing SLC operations, Ridgeway Deeps. The BC was designed at approximately 6 Mt/a to match the concentrator and a systematic improvement process through the entire underground system again saw delivery rates consistently around 10 Mt/a.In line with the production rate increases, Newcrest was also committed to advancing caving knowledge through a number of targeted research and development experiments and new processes. These were primarily related to improving cave ore recovery through systematic draw marker trials, cave propagation through preconditioning techniques with associated monitoring systems. New technologies were also developed to improve the safety and efficiency of the mine through data collection, cave establishment techniques, production dispatching and autonomous loading.CITATION:Dunstan, G, 2016. In November 1969, New Zealand Steel Ltd pioneered the commercial use of the SL/RN solid fuel direct reduction process to make sponge iron as a feed material for electric arc furnaces. Serious process problems with the use of green balls and coal injection were progressively overcome. The process was developed by New Zealand Steel along a radical route, of feeding the fine grained raw ironsand concentrate and coal directly to the kiln. Contemporaneously with this development of direct reduction, steelmaking process innovations were made that enabled the arc furnaces to operate successfully with the high volumes of acid slag. The further expansion of New Zealand Steel's primary steelmaking capacity to replace the currently imported hot and cold flat rolled products is under consideration. The requirement to produce about 600 000 tonnes of steel slabs will be an opportunity to further modify iron and steel making plant and processes to optimise the economics. The conceptual and preliminary engineering selection of options is described.

Thank you for this opportunity to address your conference on 'The role of coal in the New Zealand energy market'. New Zealand's energy market has, in common with much of New Zealand, undergone major change following the market reforms of the Labour Government. As far as the energy sector is concerned this change has been for the better, as it has created for the first time in a very long time a 'true economic market' for energy in New Zealand. This is in marked contrast to the previous regime where: ò Electricity was state operated, subsidised and cross subsidised. ò Oil was imported and subject to a raft of taxes and duties. ò Coal produced by state mines was priced by cabinet committee, based on other energy prices rather than on the costs of production and delivery of the energy product. Today, with the establishment of the SOE's we have a market of competitive supply, where the customer has the choice of energy with prices based on the true costs of production and delivery. This can only be good for the customer as the cost is now based on the real costs of production, not on political whim. So where does coal fit in this brave new world of free market energy supplies? Well, opportunity, they say, knocks but once.

Brief descriptions of several types of unit pulverizeI' are given and the functioning of the components that crush, carry, dry and classify the coal is considered. A distinction is drawn between pulverizers which crush particle beds and those .operating by free-crushing. The overall performance of pulverijlers is considered in terms of correlations between mill variables, coal grindability, abrasiveness, moisture and particle size. Brief discussioiJ. of the influence of pulverized fuel quality on boiler operation and of pulverizing costs concludes the paper.INTRODUCTIONModern coal pulverizers function as carriers of materials and as crushers, as dryers and as size classification machines and, thus, the unit pulverizer comprises. several components that normally function as separate apparatus. The controls of the unit pulverizer must have sufficient flexibility to accommodate rapid variations of boiler load or coal quality. Further, the machine must be robust, yet easy to maintain preferably at annual intervals-so that maintenance costs are small (for coal is a relatively cheap material). Usually, the full load of a modern pulverized-fuel fired boiler can be raised with one pulverizer off-line. All coals, from anthracites to brown coal, may be prepared as pulverized fuel (hereafter P.F.) .Each pulverizer of a direct-fired boiler has, broadly, to supply the burners with coal powdered so that about 80 per cent passes a 200 B.S. sieve and only a small proportion, less than about 10 per cent, remains on the 100 B.S. sieve. The classification processes must prevent any appreciable proportion of coarse particles in the P.F. and yet not return excessive proportions of "finished" fines. The quality of the P.F. should not vary greatly with output rates which may be anywhere between the maximum rate and one quarter ofthe maximum. The suspension of P.F. in the primary air...

This article attempts to outline essential features of the Mount Isa ore deposit, to reveal the agencies thought to be responsible for its localization, and to describe methods used for obtaining and applying geological data on a commercial basis. Structural features are emphasized because they have proved the most useful agencies to date in searching for ore. Vertical depth, horizontal width and stratigraphic thickness are used throughout the article, and quantities are quoted in long tons.THE DEPOSITA width of more than two miles of evenly bedded shale of the Mount Isa series (upper pre-Cambrian) lies sandwiched conformably between quartzites. The series strikes N.S. and dips approximately 60° W. Shale is unaltered...Important geological work has been carried out by the Queensland Geological Survey, chiefly by Mr. S. R. L. Shepherd, in co-operation with the Geological Department of Mount Isa Mines Limited. Mineral-deposit geology, geochemical processes, and biogeochemical processes are fundamental controls on the environmental conditions that exist naturally in mineralised areas prior to mining, and that result from mining and mineral processing. Input from economic geologists and geochemists is therefore crucial to effectively predict, assess, mitigate, and remediate the environmental effects of mineral-resource development. Recent open pit gold mining at Summitville, Colorado , has received intense public scrutiny for a variety of environmental problems, most important of which has been extreme acid drainage. Now a Superfund environmental cleanup site, Summitville exemplifies how economic geology and geochemistry principles: 1. could have been better utilized to first predict and minimise the environmental problems, and 2. can now be used to optimize the environmental cleanup.

All mining and quarrying operations that employ blasting to fragment and move broken ground have a price to pay for æby-productsÆ such as vibration and noise. These æby-productsÆ cannot be eliminated but they can be controlled and modern blasting techniques have improved to the point that excessive environmental restrictions can be adhered to whilst maintaining acceptable production rates and quality. Accurate measurement is the key to control, and as the environmental limits are becoming tighter, the proper way to measure vibrations from blasting operations becomes an integral part of the mining or quarrying operations. The basic vibration monitoring system consists of a primary sensor connected to a data logger and computer software for the analysis of the signal received and recorded. Currently, as with all fields of measurement, much improvement has occurred over the past decade, and electronic devices are much more accurate and reliable. Data analysis has also improved considerably with the computing power that is available to field operatives today. Mounting the primary sensor has been often overlooked in supposed æstandardsÆ with procedures such as double sided tape, resting on a flat surface provided the vibration level is less than a given amount. But if it is worth going to the expense of the monitoring equipment and manpower, surely it is worth a little extra effort to ensure the primary sensor is coupled to the ground effectively. The primary sensor must move with the ground and measure this movement; so if the primary sensor is allowed to move without respect to the ground (ie poor coupling to the ground) then a false record of the physical event will be measured. This scenario can easily be a practical reality if the primary sensor coupling method to the ground is not effective. In this study a number of mounting methods were fabricated and connected to similar data monitors and a series of ænormalÆ production blasts were used as the vibration source. These mounting devices were measured against an in-house procedure (the æstandardÆ) and the relative merits compared. A laboratory investigation was also carried out to look at the physical parameters of the æsoil and their effect on vibration attenuation of the in-house standard method.

The Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) Mine is one of the future underground mines of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI). Located in the remote highlands of Papua, Indonesia, the GBC mine is scheduled to start production in 2017 reaching its peak production capacity of 160 000 t/d in 2023.In order to reach planned production capacity, the GBC mine will utilise an ore handling system consisting of rail haulage, crushing and conveying. The rail haulage system will utilise over 20 km of track while crushing is accomplished by way of three gyratory crushers each with a capacity of 3300 t/h. Nine conveyors operating in two parallel systems, each system over 3 km in length, will move the ore from the crushers to the stockpiles. These systems require a network of larger tunnels and mass excavations to accommodate the planned production facilities.This paper will describe the ore handling system, tunnel and mass excavation methodology as well as some of the challenges encountered with ground conditions and excavation quality during the execution of the project. A combination of lateral and vertical development methodologies and equipment, including drill jumbos, mechanised raise climbers and specialised ground support equipment, have proven successful in the development of a quality ore handling system.CITATION:Pasek, I, Firdausi, H and Chenier, T, 2016. The observation of lower-than-predicted Fe/Cu ratios in the cementation of copper on iron in tests at elevated temperatures indicated that some other reaction was contributing to the reduction of cupric sulphate in addition to the reduction by elemental iron. Experiments showed that the copper sponge, which initially formed on the iron, subsequently reduced the cupric sulphate giving the products cuprous oxide and sulphuric acid.Tests were undertaken to determine the rate and equilibrium conditions of the reduction reaction with variations in the types of the reducing agent and solution parameters. The reaction first became apparent at temperatures above 50°C and as it ceased at pH 1·8 it was possible to induce further reaction by alkali addition.

Iron Road Limited (IRD) is currently developing the Central Eyre Iron Project (CEIP) at Warramboo on the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. The project consists of a 30 year open pit mine, magnetite processing facilities, standard-gauge railway and deep water, Cape class capable port. Major South Australian government approvals have been received and funding arrangements confirmed.The 4.5 Bt Mineral Resource (3.7 Bt Ore Reserve), the largest in Australia and among the largest globally, is to be mined to produce 24 Mt/a high-grade, 67 per cent Fe, magnetite concentrate. This in-demand, premium product has a P80 of ~100 µm, suitable for both direct sinter feed and an additive in pelletising.The extensively drilled, homogeneous orebody is unique in both geology and mineralogy; only averaging 15 per cent Fe yet coarse-grained with almost negligible phosphorus and sulfur content. This has allowed significant opportunities to tailor the mining method to the orebody, utilising both optimised blasting as first stage comminution, as well as in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) to reduce the heavy haulage diesel fleet and optimise the pit shell.Approximately 1 Mt/d of total material, ore and waste, is required to be moved from the pit daily, introducing materials handling challenges, overcome by a flexible IPCC set-up, multiple overland conveyors and an exacting mine plan. Non-conventional waste and tailings storage is utilised to allow for significant water savings, progressive rehabilitation and minimisation of land impact.The processing facilities utilise both the magnetic and density properties of the magnetite to beneficiate the ore. The coarse-grained nature of the ore is exploited to minimise comminution yet still liberate a high quality product. Utilisation of modular construction methods allows risk reduction during construction and reduced pumping requirements during operation.This paper highlights the uniqueness of the CEIP, with focus on the mineralisation of the orebody, and the beneficial impacts this has on both the proposed mining method and processing. Power Plant. The power for the metallurgical operations is supplied by the company's own power plant, which is centrally situated. Power is also supplied to Metal Manufactures Ltd. and Australian Fertilizers Ltd., both being adjacently situated to this company'sworks.The power supplied is direct current, 250 volts, and is obtained from direct-current generators coupled to turbines and to Belliss & Morcom triple expansion engines.The steam supply is obtained from Babcock & Wilcox water tubular boilers, the fuel used being drawn from the South Coast coal mines.Transport. - The works are connected by standard broad gauge railway to both the jetties and the Government railway. Two steam and three electric locomotives are employed in this service.In addition to its own requirements, transport is provided to Metal Manufactures Ltd. and Australian Fertilizers Ltd.The various operating departments are connected by a 2-ft. gauge railway operated by Jeffrey electric locomotives.Ore Storage and Sample Mill - These departments are connected by broad gauge line to the Government railway and jetties. All material which is railed or shipped to the works from the various centres is weighed, sampled and placed in the ore store, or outside gantries, before being treated.Since the whole of the material received is either purchased or treated on a toll charge, great care is necessary in the weighing and sampling of all the receipts.Assay Oflice--The assay office is divided into several laboratories, where analyses of the various purchased materials and works samples are carried out.

Misiman society is matrilineal and despite relatively long contact with Europeans and mining, it retains its traditional consensus style of decision making. Many Misimans at least understand English, and this has encouraged comfortable communication between the people and the company (Misima Mines Pty Limited). Company care in monitoring the environment (mostly using Misiman staff), its policy of maintaining a largely Misiman workforce, and its emphasis on training and safety, have all created an environment compatible with Misiman society. In addition, the company has constructed and/or upgraded community facilities such as the airstrip, roads, the health centre, police station and schools, and has actively promoted local business endeavours. All these initiatives have been accomplished by constant dialogue with the largely Misiman workforce, and with the Misiman people, both before and during implementation. Constant, careful communication, using traditional Misiman consensus methods, appears to be the key to continued community acceptance of the project.

The exposures resulting from development work, following on the discovery of a new shoot of hIgh grade ore at the north end of the Sardine tin mine, during 1952, have provided an unusual opportunity to study the oxidation of a stannite-rich ore. Through the kindness of C. C. Morton, Chief Government Geologist of Queensland, an exactly located suite of specimens representative of the exposures was supplied by J. and W. Reddie. This was later supplemented by a number of specimens culled from a parcel ofrepresentative ore submitted to the Melbourne Ore Dressing Laboratory for testing.The Sardine tin mine, near Ewan, Queensland, has been the outstanding producer of the Kangaroo Hills Mineral Field. Since its discovery in 1918, up to 1952 it has yielded about 1,500 tons of cassiterite concentrates, and about 85 tons of stannite concentrates. The outcrop ore averaged 35% tin oxide, but the grade declined with increasing depth, and by 1930 had fallen to 7% tin oxide. In the northern section of the mine the ore shoots show a downward passage to complex primary s.ulphide ore, containing cassiterite and abundant stannite.The orebodies occur in a series of fissures in a crushed zone about 50 ft. wide in slates and quartzites that have been intruded by granite (Connah, 1952). A quartz porphyry dyke forms the footwall of the original main lode in its southern part, being traced' from the surface to' the No. 4 level (173 ft. vertical depth), and two narrow dolerite dykes were encountered in the workings north of the main...

Coromandel Peninsula gold mineralisation has an epithermal style which involves extensive alteration of host rocks and addition of pyrite over large volumes of rock. These altered rocks therefore have high potential for generating acid rock drainage. Natural acid groundwater discharges occur in altered rocks, but not in propylitically altered rock. There is little calcite available in mineralised rocks to neutralise this acid. In contrast, the mesothermal veins of the Otago Schist cause little alteration of the host rock, and that alteration has similar mineralogy to the host rock. Calcite is a common mineral in host and mineralised zones, and sulphides are generally subordinate. Hence acidification of Otago rocks is unlikely. This lack of acidification in Otago facilitates arsenic mobility in solution, up to hundreds of ppm. Arsenic is insoluble under acidic conditions in the Coromandel. Base metals are soluble under acidic conditions of the Coromandel, but they are immobilised by adsorption on to the widespread clay minerals where the solutions are neutralised. Base metals are generally immobile in Otago, but when they are mobilised, adsorption is less effectiveas an attenuation mechanism because clay minerals are rare.
