Copper electrowinning at Duisburger Kupferhuette was introduced in March 1975. The electrowinning plant has a capacity of 10,000 mT of copper cathodes a year. The cuprous oxide feed material is an intermediate product of the treatment of the leach solutions, originating from chloridizing roasting of pyrite cinders. This material is characterized not only by a wide spectrum of accompanying impurities, but also by an unusually high level of precious metals. As the priority set was the production of high-purity cathodes. there was a need for developing a process which would be suited to treat complex leach liquors . The process adopted consist s of an oxidizing leach in spent electrolyte, followed by two- stage purification, By this means. a low- acid pregnant copper electrolyte is obtained free of elements detrimental to copper quality. Electrowinning is carried out at a current density of 200 A / m2 in the presence of 10 g/l zinc. The electrowon copper has a conductivity of at least 101.4% lACS and a softening temperature not exceeding 200°C, which makes it a suitable product for continuous casting and dip ?forming.

A chemical process, based on laboratory investigations, is proposed for the production of high-purity niobium oxide from a pyrochlore-perovsk1te flotation concentrate produced from ore obtained at the Oka, Quebec property of Columbium Mining Products Limited. The method developed included the decomposition and dissolution of the flotation concentrate with hot, concentrated sulphuric acid. The dissolved niobium was purified and concentrated by a solvent extraction step, using methyl isobutyl ketone as the extractant. The niobium was recovered from the extractant with ammonium fluoride solution from which niobium oxide was precipitated with ammonia. Finally, the filtered and washed precipitate was calcined. Ninety-six per cent of the niobium was recovered in a product analysing 99.9 per cent Nzo.. The reagent cost was in the range of $1.00 to $1.25 per pound of niobium recovered. In recent years the global mining industry has addressed its social and environmental responsibilities and numerous factors have contributed to this. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is an important part of mining company strategy for practical implementation of the goals of sustainability, transparency, accountablity and good relationships with stakeholders:- investors, employees and communities. A key stakeholder for all mining companies is the local community which is affected by the mining operations. Companies must identify the emerging social and environmental trends, study the interests and concerns of various communities, address their needs and maintain a positive relationship. The CSR programmes of Czech coal mining companies are focused on surrounding community initiatives and sustainable responsible business. Mining in the Czech Republic is subject to strict rules and regulations and supervised by the State Mining Authority. Mining projects undergo rigorous approval procedures which encompass all operational measures at the different planning levels ? such as public participation in the authorisation process for mining projects, the application of the Environmental Impact Assessment Directive, environmental sustainability programmes, innovative solutions and flexible options offered by the mining company. One very important part is the preparation of the mining-technology preconditions and developing the integrated planning process in which all socially and politically relevant subjects in the mining operation surroundings are included. In an in-depth debate, all stakeholders may jointly develop the concept, in accordance with democratic principles. The optimally conducted dialogue process needs broad communication bases, including setting up theme-related joint taskforces, together with good moderation and the highly qualified support of technical experts. Using a case study of Severoceske doly a.s. Chomutov (SD Company) and the Czech Coal Group ? Czech leaders in the extraction of brown coal, this paper aims to examine the community development approaches and the CSR effectiveness of large scale mining companies. This paper brings a review of CSR and other such voluntary initiatives in the mining industry's proactive steps to contribute to societal well-being in a meaningful way. Key studies are provided by the projects ? Region with Better Perspective?, ?Stop Dust for Healthy Brezno Village?, ?Clever Heads for the North? and ?Coal Safari?. CSR issues are managed throughout all stages of the mine operation and beyond, long after the mine closes (e.g. post-closure programmes of new landscape, alternatives for reclamation including generation of lakes in former surface mines, conceptualization of industrial heritage). Communities need to be given the opportunity to help themselves through participation in CSR projects rather than being recipients of financial gifts from the company. A fair balancing of interests is the basis of any successful cooperation.

Introduction The Flin Flon mine of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, is on the interprovincial boundary between Manitoba and Saskatchewan, about four hundred miles north of the Canada-United States boundary. The orebodies are gold, silver, zinc, and copper replacement deposits occurring as irregular lenses of massive sulphides, arranged en echelon, and irregular masses of disseminated copper sulphides in chlorite. The country rocks are of Precambrian age, dominantly lava flows. Development of the Mine The mine is opened by two vertical main shafts- the North Main and South Main shafts- 3,800 feet apart. The North Main shaft has a depth of 2,210 feet and the South Main shaft is completed for stoping operations to the 3,250-foot level (see Figure 1). These shafts are connected by main haulages driven, on the footwall side of the orebodies, at 520-foot intervals down to the 2,210-foot level. No. 3 (subsidiary) shaft is on the footwall side of the orebodies at a point between the North Main and South Main shafts, 2,400 feet south of the former. It has a depth of 3,250 feet and connects with all main haulage levels- with both Main shafts down to the 2,210-foot level and with the South Main shaft on the 2,750-, 3,000-, and 3,250-foot levels. Other openings tO the mine include B North fan raise, the opening due to the recovery of the open pit sill pillar, and several back-fill raises.

This is the first in a series of Coal Technology Reviews being prepared in accordance with a recommendation voted by the Coal Division in session at the Jubilee Meeting, Vancouver, April, 1948, that the Department of Mines and Resources be requested to arrange for publication by the proper Government authority of a Quarterly Review' of Coal Technology, for distribution among those concerned in the production and use of coal in Canada. This recommendation was subsequently endorsed both by the Council of the Institute and by the Dominion Coal Board. Further reviews (or digests) will appear at intervals in the Bulletin, or will be published and distributed by the Board which, meanwhile, has undertaken to distribute reprints of Mr. Ignatieff's review.-En. * * * The fields in coal mining technology which are considered to demand most attention and study at the present time are reviewed under the headings appearing below. Mechanization In the light of the growing shortage of skilled miners and the necessity of mitigating constantly increasing mining costs, interest continues to centre in mining methods and applications of mechanization chat will produce the maximum reduction of man power. The growth of strip or open-cut mining, also, is a consequence of this trend. Mechanization at the face attracts most attention and the trend is toward developing and adopting machines capable of cutting and loading the coal in one operation instead of having the separate operations of cutting, drilling, blasting, and loading. In Great Britain, where longwall mining is? the general practice, the A.B. Meco-Moore machine still receives much attention, and accounts describing its performance over reasonably long periods have appeared in the technical press.

Introduction The subject of basic refractories is daily becoming of increased importance in metallurgical processes, and there is a constantly growing necessity for the development of better materials. This fact, together with the realization that Canada possesses one of the best sources of such refractories in the British Empire, if not in the world, made it appear? advisable that the subject be presented to the Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress at the 1927 meeting. Having been in close touch with developments in the Canadian product during the past five years, G. M. Carrie was requested to prepare such a paper. The Canadian producers of magnesia refractories have succeeded in developing the product to a place where it has almost entirely displaced imported materials from the Canadian market. These developments were made possible by a close study of the methods of preparation of the material, and by an exceedingly careful control of the manufacturing process so as to obtain a thorough blending of the different constituents with the resultant uniformity of composition. This point is very important to the metallurgist, as un-uniform materials are a potent cause of difficulties in most manufacturing processes and the constant trend is towards their elimination. The temperature at which the Canadian material is burned ensures high specific gravity and thorough shrinkage. The grain size of the product is so controlled that the voids are only just sufficient to allow of proper bonding, thus making possible a dense, hard bottom affording high resistance to erosion and shock. Careful proportioning of the constituent elements absolutely prevents disintegration.

There are a number of high grade niobium deposits worldwide which have been deemed untreatable by flotation due to the very fine grained nature of the in situ pyrochlore, the primary niobium bearing mineral. A known method of recovering extremely fine particles is through the use of chelating reagents such as hydroxamic acids which have a strong affinity for transition metals. However, one of the major issues in the flotation of niobium bearing minerals using hydroxamic acids is the corresponding recovery of other transition metal gangue minerals including magnetite, hematite, and pyrite. In order to better understand the differences in behavior of niobium and iron bearing minerals in flotation with benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) and sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) at a range of pulp temperatures, a Box-Behnken experimental design was employed. Regression models for the global recovery of iron indicated that iron mineral recovery was significantly influenced by both BHA and SHMP dosage. Upon examinination of flotation products by semi-quantitative XRD, it was observed that recovery of iron oxide and sulphide minerals (hematite, magnetite, goethite, and pyrite) was problematic at high benzohydroxamic acid dosage, while sodium hexametaphosphate was mainly helpful for carbonate mineral depression. Iron rich carbonates (likely an iron rich dolomite) largely reported to the tails with increased SHMP dosage.

"AbstractThe rod mill introduced into the Sullivan Concentrator flow in September, 1948, replaced two sets of 74 in. by 20 in. rolls and their accompanying screens. In addition to the work formerly done by the rolls, the rod mill is producing a finer product and one which provides more suitable feed for the primary ball mills. The object of the finer discharge from the •primary mills is to make possible a feed directly from the mills to a series of flotation machines where a large portion of the galena can be withdrawn from the circuit while the galena is still coarsely granular. The interposing of classifiers between grinding and flotation means the selective grinding of the galena.The author summarizes the work of •the rod mill through the first 5,000,000 tons and shows that the wear of lifters, liners, and rods is definitely below normal for the type and size of rock being handled. The rod mill, driven through a fluid coupling, has been subject to a range of speeds from 13.5 to 19. A pinion in the speed reducer was changed to allow the extending of the normal speed range of the fluid drive of approximately 4 r.p.m.Since the critical speed inside the liners •is 23.4, the range •in per cent of criticial is 57.7 to 81.2 per cent.The capacity of the mill increases with increasing speed but the character of the product remains approximately the same except when the feed rate is too high.Consumption of steel, power, and other operating data are presented.The author introduces certain fundamental observations on the principles involved •in comminution in order to support the special design and operation of the rod mill."

"The last edition of Tax Notes expressed concern about two proposed tax changes in Finance Minister Paul Martin's 1995 budget that could have detrimental effects on Canada's mining industry. This month, Tax Notes expands on these concerns. This article is based on a paper that the author presented at ClM '95 in HalifaxIntroductionOn a global basis, there are more investment opportunities in the mining industry today than at any other time in history. Countries in Central and South America, Eastern Europe, the CIS, Central Asia, and Asia are competing aggressively to attract investment to all sectors of their domestic mining industries. Today, the demand for investment dollars exceeds the amount of dollars that are available for investment in mining. It is not surprising, then, that the established mineral producing nations are witnessing a decline in spending on exploration and development on their home turf, and an increase in spending in developing countries. In the context of a developed country such as Canada, there are two manifestations of the problem of declining investment: (I) Foreign investors are allocating more of their capital budgets to new opportunities in developing countries; and (2) Canadian juniors and seniors are spending proportionately more abroad. This shift in global spending patterns is the source of some concern for the future of Canada's mining industry, particularly because it is widely believed that the current rate of discovery of ore reserves in this country is too low to replenish depleting reserves.""Government bashing"" has always been a popular pastime in Canada. Invariably, this pastime has focussed, at !east in part, on taxation. In view of the intense competition that Canada faces on the global mining scene, it is important that the role of taxation in the decision-making process be kept in perspective. Major-element data for unaltered, unmineralized felsic host rocks from a number of stratigraphically simple, massive volcanogenic Zn-Cu(-Pb) sulphide deposits of low metamorphic grade have been compiled. The petrochemical affinities of these host rocks have been determined (by standard means and by discriminant analysis) and compared. This comparison indicates that volcanogenic deposits in felsic terrains are not restricted to the classical calc-alkaline rock association as previously thought, but can actually be hosted by rocks showing a range of iron content. There is a positive correlation between differentiation trend and are tenor. Zn-Cu ores usually have iron-rich felsic hosts (most Canadian Shield deposits); Pb-Zn -Cu ores have iron-poor felsic hosts (Japanese, Iberian and Tasmanian deposits). This parallels the antipathetic relationship between iron content and background lead levels evident in young, unmineralized, island arcs as well as in many older belts. Correlations between differentiation trend on one hand and massive ore mineralogy and the relative proportions of various rock type (including rhyolite, quartz-porphyry and coarse pyroclastic rocks) on the other are also evident. It is concluded that the recognition of a calc-alkaline differentiation trend cannot be used as a prospecting guide, as has previously been proposed. However, in view of the above correlations, the recognition of a given trend may aid in the formulation of an effective exploration philosophy.

The continuous improvement in aluminum industry over the last years has increased metal output at lower cost. The potlining plays an important role in this regard due to high cost involved and more recently in its environmental aspects. In order to increase potlife and thus minimize the aluminum cash cost, a systemic approach is needed, through investigating the main cathode failure mechanisms by using a pot autopsy as a powerful tool, and then making the necessary chances to achieve extended potlife. In addition, preheating and pot start-up may also damage the cathode if not performed with an appropriate technique or even if the lining materials are not specified correctly, among other factors. All these aspects will be presented and discussed in this paper. Increased potlife, especially now that the current is reaching values up to 300kA, will allow aluminum plants to match their goals more efficiently at lower costs.

In 1913, potash mineralization was recognized at a depth of over 7,000 feet in an oil-well hole (Norcanol's Radville No. 1 well) drilled near the town of Raddlle, Saskatchewan. Although, at this depth, potash is not considered mineable by conventional underground mining methods, this discovery shed the first light on the potash deposits of Saskatchewan in much the same manner as oil-well drilling was responsible for the first discovery of potash in the Carlsbad Basin of New Mexico in 19:25. The discovery near Radville alerted the oil-well geologists and, as a result potash mineralization was recognized in the Verbata No. 2 well, near Unity, Saskatchewan, in 1946. The mineralization, which was at a depth ?of 3,466 feet, graded more than 20 per cent K20 over a thickness of eleven feet. "The 1994 Quebec Budget included a significant overhaul of the mining duties sys-tem in that province: broadening the base and lowering the rate, all in the name of “ensuring the integrity of the taxation system"" and ""enabling the State to collect fair compensation "". The reforms hit hardest on the small, lightly-capitalized producer, by repealing the basic annual exemption, limiting the refund for losses, and significantly reducing the investment and processing allowances. There is some relief provided in the form of faster depreciation rates and a lower nominal tax rate, but the thrust of the overhaul is clear -higher taxes on the mining sector.IntroductionAlthough Quebec's mining tax regime represents under 10J0 of the province's revenue base, and was significantly reformed in 1979 and 1985, the May 13, 1994, provincial budget introduced further significant changes to the Mining Duties Act, The hope (on the part of the province) is to reduce the provincial ""subsidy"" for mining by $20 mil· lion per year by 1996."

This paper describes the results of a laboratory study on the upgrading of Algoma siderite by the amine flotation of silica and silicate gangue. The experiments indicate that a virtually complete removal of silica is possible in a rougher flotation con-ducted in tap water at natural pH, without prior desliming of the ore. Grinding considerably finer than the apparent liberation size is essential for maximum silica rejection. A cationic collector, Aeromine 3037, gave best results when used in combination with a modifier. Of the several modifiers tested, a Dutch potato dextrin, Dextrin 4356, was found to be the most effective. Both iron recovery and the grade of the final iron product are enhanced by floating the pyrite contained in the ore prior to the amine flotation of the silica, and by scalping the magnetics from the silica concentrate. "Following the depletion of nickel sulfide ores, laterites are considered as one of the main sources for producing nickel and cobalt. One of the primary steps in pyrometallurgical extraction of nickel from laterites involves partial reduction of the ore at temperatures below 1000°C. Studying the kinetics of laterite reduction provides valuable information on reducibility of nickel laterites using coal as a reductant. The present study investigates the reduction behavior of a nickel laterite by thermal gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Non-isothermal reduction tests and X-ray diffraction analysis were performed to find the main reactions that occur during the process. The kinetic parameters were calculated by Coats-Redfern method. The general model of simple reaction f(a)=(1-a)n was used for calculating kinetic parameters.INTRODUCTION Nickel (Ni) naturally occurs in the form of sulfide and laterite ores. Laterite ores are mainly available in tropical regions. Weathering phenomena during millions of years has led to the formation of several layers with specific mineralogy (Butt & Cluzel, 2013). The three main layers downward are limonite, smectite, and saprolite (Crundwell et al., 2011). Although laterites are the most available nickel ore resource (70%), their share in the overall Ni production is limited to 40% (Crundwell et al., 2011). The main reasons for not materializing the full potential of laterites are as follows (Ray et al., 1985): •,Laterite ores contain high water content (free and combined) which in turn results in high energy consumption of the extraction process. •,As Ni is present in the form of solid solution in laterites, physical upgrading methods such as flotation are not effective in increasing the Ni content before the extraction process. •,Extracting Ni from sulfide ores involve exothermic reactions which are beneficial due to decreasing the overall energy requirement of the process, however there is not efficient release of energy in the process of extracting Ni from laterite ores."

"Abstract -The East Bull Lake gabbro-anorthosite intrusion is one of several Early Proterozoic layered matie intrusions occurring along the Southern Province - Superior Province boundary in the Elliot Lake - Sudbury region, Ontario. The base of the East Bull Lake intrusion comprises abundant plagioclase cumulates (Leucogabbronorite Zone) hosting two distinct styles of sulfide mineralization: (1) disseminated magmatic sulfides, and (2) disseminated to massive, structurally controlled sulfides. Both types of mineralization are enriched in Pd, Pt, Au, Cu and Ni. The host rocks to the sulfide mineralization display a range of interesting features including nodular textures, dendritic­ pegmatitic matie pods, inclusion-rich zones (pyroxenite, anorthosite and granitic inclusions) and mag­ matie breccias. Disseminated chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and pentlandite occur in concentrations of up to lOOJo within erratically distributed gossan pods near the base of the intrusion. The sulfides were originally precipitated from intercumulus liquids, but were subsequently recrystallized and locally remobilized along fractures during the major period of metamorphism and deformation that af­ fected the East Bull Lake intrusion. The base- and precious-metal tenor of the structurally controlled sulfides can be explained by extensive remobilization and reconcentration of the pre-existing magmatic sulfides in the vicinity of a major shear zone. Both styles of sulfide mineralization locally contain ppm abundances of POE + Au and are generally Pd- and Cu-rich, although both display large variations in Pd :Pt and Cu:Ni ratios. The magmatic sulfides are more strongly enriched in POE and contain up to 1470 ppm Pd in 100% sulfide. Severa! factors, including source characteristics, magmatic processes (crustal assimilation, fractional crystallization) and post-magmatic inter­ action with hydrous fluid, have influenced the present distribution of POE, Cu and Ni in the East Bull Lake intrusion .The magmatic sulfide occurrences from the East Bull Lake intrusion compare favorably with marginal-type deposits from rift-related intrusions (Noril'sk-Talnakh region, Siberia; Duluth Com­ plex, U.S.A.) in terrns of their distribution, but are most similar to reef-type POE deposits with respect to their base- and precious-metal geochemistry. The combination of high POE tenors and large tonnages that is observed for the POE-Cu-Ni mineralization from the East Bull Lake intrusion suggests that a good potential exists for the presence of economie concentrations of Pd, Pt, Au, Cu and Ni in the intrusion. On a global scale, the East Bull Lake intrusion is part of a suite of Early Proterozoic plutons, many of which contain significant volumes of stratiform and/or marginal­ type POE-Cu-Ni mineralization. The East Bull Lake intrusion is also one of the oldest mineralized intrusions derived from a sub-Superior Province mantle source region that has given rise to several significant magmatic POE-Cu-Ni deposits during the period 2.5 Ga to 1.1 Ga."

"Metallurgical extraction processes often call for the heating of aqueous slurries. Indirect heat exchangers are generally not feasible for service with high yield stress slurries because of low heat transfer rates. It is more appropriate to heat the slurry by direct contact, typically with steam as the heating medium. Although having a long and successful history, direct-contact heat transfer to aqueous slurries has been used without the support of pilot plant research. This paper provides results of the needed research, the work being done at a scale large enough to enable direct scale up to commercial operations. A pilot plant heater was constructed and tested to develop an understanding of the slurry heating process and to ensure that commercial scale heaters were appropriately sized.INTRODUCTIONPressure Leaching OperationsPressure leaching operations are often used to oxidise sulphide gold ores, or for extraction of nickel and cobalt from laterite ores with sulphuric acid. Where there is sufficient sulphur available, the exothermic pressure oxidation reactions can be self sustaining at temperatures as high as 225 ºC, without having to preheat the feed slurry. At lower sulphur levels, slurry preheating is required. This is typically achieved by utilising the flash steam released from the slurry letdown stages and contacting this directly with cold incoming slurry ahead of the autoclave. The vessels where this slurry-steam contact is made are known as heaters or condensers, with the number of pre-heat stages varying, depending on how much heat is evolved in the oxidation reaction (Mason, 1990).In nickel laterite pressure acid leaching processes, which operate between 245 and 270 ºC, the only significant exothermic reactions are those associated with dilution of sulphuric acid in the leach. As a consequence, slurry preheating with flash steam is always used commercially. In practice the number of flash steam preheating stages required varies from 1 to 3, driven by a number of factors, including other uses for flash steam and the upper temperature limit at which preheated slurry can be pumped. A diagram of a typical pressure acid leach train is shown in Figure 1.For pressure acid leaching operations and at low sulphur levels in pressure oxidation, boiler generated direct steam addition to the autoclave is required to sustain the reaction temperature. For this reason it is imperative that the flash steam – slurry heat transfer is efficient and the slurry temperature approaches that of the flash steam closely."

"Pyritic massive sulphide deposits lie conformably above submarine volcanic rocks, and beneath siliceous and manganiferous iron formations. The massive bodies are often zoned, with a barren pyritic top grading downward into pyrite with sphalerite, and occasionally galena, and a chalcopyrite-rich base. They are frequently brecciated, like the lavas beneath them, which contain pyrite and chalcopyrite as coatings on joints and fractures and as dispersed grains. The lavas also exhibit propylitic, argillic and silicic alteration. These sulphide deposits appear to have formed on sea bottom from fluids escaping through the lavas during periods of exhalative and sometimes explosive volcanism. The process may be comparable to the present deposition of base metals from hot brines in the Red Sea. Some porphyry copper deposits resemble the altered, sulphide-impregnated lavas which lie beneath bodies of pyritic massive sulphide. In porphyry copper deposits, pyrite and chalcopyrite occur as veinlets and dispersed grains in intensely fractured tuffs, flows, sub-volcanic intrusions or other host rocks, characterized by propylitic, argillic and silicic alteration. Metal zoning is present; sphalerite and galena often occur in manganiferous veins peripheral to a shell of pyritic veinlets which encloses the mineable zone of chalcopyrite-bearing veinlets. This sulphide distribution appears to have formed from hydrothermal fluids escaping, either passively or violently, from solidifying magma. The fluids may be comparable to hot brines encountered by drilling in the Salton Sea area of California.There are also important differences between massive sulphide and porphyry copper deposits. The former usually occur in differentiated, mafic-to-felsic subaqueous volcanic rocks, whereas porphyry copper deposits are often associated with shallow plutons and subaerial volcanic rocks of intermediate to felsic composition. Calcic-sodic metasomatism accompanies the massive sulphides, whereas potassic metasomatism characterizes the porphyry cop.per deposits. Further, ages of massive sulphides range from Archean (Keewatin) to Tertiary, but porphyry coppers are Triassic to Tertiary in age. These similarities and differences suggest that massive sulphide and porphyry copper deposits are related tectonically and metallogenetically. The former were generated during early stages of crustal evolution, particularly in Archean time, and were repeatedly derived during early stages of younger, individual tectonic cycles. In contrast, the porphyry coppers developed during the later stages of crustal evolution - later in terms of both absolute age and relative age within younger individual tectonic cycles. They appear in younger rocks generally, and specifically in rocks involved in events of the middle and late tectonic stages of orogenic belts. The massive sulphide deposits are of early-magmatic eugeosynclinal affiliation, whereas the porphyry deposits formed in late-magmatic, predominantly subvolcanic settings at the edge of continental plates, where contemporaneous exhalative volcanism was mainly a subaerial phenomenon. Transitional types of deposits exist and are found on continental margins with flanking eugeosynclinal sequences."

RÉSUMÉ Cet article traite d’une analyse technique et économique du concept du triage optique en vue d’améliorer la rentabilité des opérations minières. Le principe du tri optique et les principaux systèmes et modules servant au fonctionnement de l’appareil de triage sont décrits. un modèle a été développé pour analyser l’intérêt économique d’une opération de triage optique. L’étude est basée sur des données provenant d’une halde de minerai à faible teneur en or, déposé à la surface, et de minerai extrait des opérations souterraines courantes de la mine Beaufor au Québec. Les résultats de cette analyse indiquent que l’opération de triage optique permet d’améliorer grandement la performance économique; l’opération devient alors rentable pour des teneurs en or relativement petites.

"The QEMSCAN system is the third generation of automated mineral analysis systems that began with the QEM*SEM at CSIRO 30 years ago (Butcher et al. 2000). It is now a successful commercial instrument with 39 instruments in operation around the world. Back Scattered Electrons (BSE) and Energy Dispersive (EDS) X-Ray spectra are used to create digital mineral images with mineral identification occurring online. Low-count EDS spectra are used preferentially to BSE brightness, allowing minerals to be accurately identified by chemical composition. Individual minerals or groups of similar compositions are identified by comparison to a comprehensive mineral database incorporated into the QEMSCAN software. Optical mineralogy and Scanning Electron Microscopy is a metallurgists’ tool for determining the ore process mineralogy and delivering a better flowsheet. These techniques have limitations, provide limited information and sometimes fail to provide representative information. In contrast, QEMSCAN provides information on the nature and occurrence of all mineral species present plus the liberation characteristics, looking at thousands of particles in the sample presented. Some of the data presented includes:• Particle and grain sizes• Dominant mineral species• Particle shape• Calculated metal content• Density• Deportment of elements of interest between the mineral phases• Quantitative mineralogy• Mineral associations, locking and liberation• Textural relationships (particle images)It can also be used on concentrates, polished sections or drill core. This is a significant improvement in ore characterisation providing lithology, mineralogy, liberation, ore grade and porosity from a sample. Theoretical grade-recovery curves can be created to be mineralogically limited from QEMSCAN analysis which, when compared with metallurgical results, are valuable in evaluating whether liberation or chemical selectivity is driving flotation performance. A number of case study examples are given where the QEMSCAN had a significant bearing on future project development at an early stage of exploration and mine development."
