"There are two accomplishments of air and gas drilling: a new series of economic and mechanical challenges; and, acceptance as a standard drilling and completion tool.The new challenges are related to the concept of using a gaseous circulating medium in drilling for oil or gas. For purposes of discussion, a two part division has been made: the challenge of fluid invasion control and that of equipment and tools. Great strides have been made in the development of materials and techniques to combat formation fluid invasion. Chemicals and the ""mist drilling"" technique, now in use, have the versatility to cope with a wide range of downhole fluid entry conditions.Equipment and tools have been developed to meet the challenges of better, more economic drilling and completion possible with a gaseous circulating fluid. Economic and operational challenges remain.Acceptance of air and gas drilling as a normal operating tool was reached with difficulty. It is now established as a means of reducing costs in exploratory and develop-mental well drilling, exemplified in a recent study of 226 wells covering 419,407 feet of hole in the United States. Air reached the projected depth in 85 per cent of the operations, although formation water was encountered in 48.7 per cent of the holes. The San Anconio mine, owned by San Antonio Gold Mines, Limited, is located on the north shore of Rice lake, thirty miles east of lake Winnipeg, and about one hundred miles northeast of the city of Winnipeg. The three claims which formed the original San Antonio group were staked in 1911. Subsequent additions to the Company's property have in-creased their holdings co thirteen claims. Preliminary development of the property took place between 1925 and 1930. The major ore discovery during this period was the 16 vein. The mine was closed in September, 1930, but re-opened in April, 1932, since which rime it has been in continuous operation. In 1933, a development of special importance was that of the 26 vein. The mill capacity, originally designed for 150 tons, was increased to-wards the end of 1933 to 170 tons. With highly satisfactory mine development, mill enlargement to approximately 300 tons was made possible. The Company has financed the additions and improvements from mine production. Iris of interest to note that San Antonio is the first gold mine in Manitoba to pay a dividend. The first dividend was paid to the shareholders in March, 1934, and the fourth was recently declared. Electric power is transmitted to the property from the Great Falls plant of the Manitoba Power Company over a 66,000-volt transmission line approximately 62 miles long. The old camps, which had been in use since work on the property was started, in 1927, were demolished in the spring of 1934, and new camps were built on the Ross dam. Lumber for these buildings was out at the Company's saw-mill on Gold creek, eight miles from the mine. Two bunk-houses with a capacity of 72 men each were constructed, also a dining room co accommodate 144 men, a store, staff house, hospital, burcher shop, and warehouse. The camp buildings are all steam-heated from an electric boiler. They are all insulated on walls, roofs, and floors with a heavy building board, and are covered on the outside walls with asbestos siding, and on the roofs with corrugated iron. A community of about 800 persons has grown up around the mine, at Bissert. Attention has been given co their social interests, and the management of the mine has assisted its employees co build a community hall, which is used for dances, picture shows, and other entertainments and amusements. A two-room school, with an attendance of 50 pupils, is supported by Company employees. In addition, picnics, boxing contests, and hockey games are encouraged among the employees.

In this work we assessed the geochemical behavior of concentrator tailings deposited at the abandoned mines of Zeida and Mibladen (Upper Moulouya, Morocco), using physico-chemical analyses, mineralogical characterization, acid base accounting and weathering cell tests. The aim of the study was to evaluate mine drainage quality and to assess metal mobility from these concentrator tailings. Chemical analyses show that the Upper-Moulouya abandoned tailings contain relatively high quantities of lead (0.261 to 0.594 % wt). Mineralogical analyses reveal the abundance of neutralizing minerals (calcite, dolomite, ankerite, and aluminosilicates) which influence mine drainage and metal mobility in mine tailings. Leachate analyses from weathering cell tests show alkaline conditions, small conductivity values, and low solubility of Pb-mineral phases. According to these results, abandoned mine tailings in the Upper-Moulouya district have very low potential for generation of contaminated mine drainage and for leaching of heavy metals. However, the inhalation of tailings exposed to winds generate dust problem facing the local population and may cause health consequences.

Wear has been estimated to cost the Canadian mining/mineral processing industry over $15 billion per year mainly for repair/replacement of worn parts in 2013. The associated production loss is difficult to quantify but add considerably to the problem. The Canadian oil sands sector which has to deal with extremely abrasive and erosive solids, has traditionally incurred extremely severe and often unique attack. Demonstrable progress in mitigating the wear problems has been achieved through materials development, more informed materials selections, and better component and operation condition designs. An integral contributor to these advances is a long-term collaborative research partnership between NRC and the mining/supply industry. In this paper, this continuing collaboration will be described. A main focus is to identify degradation mechanisms occurring in the most severe and important service applications and to correlate these findings with laboratory test data. Relevant abrasion and erosion (often combined with corrosion) properties have been established and correlated with composition and microstructures for all classes of resistant materials ranging from relatively soft elastomers to ultra-hard ceramics. A comprehensive wear properties database has been compiled. This capability has been instrumental in facilitating the development of improved materials, optimizing materials fitness/selection for service, wear failure analysis, and quality assurance.

Mineral carbonation (MC) has been extensively researched all over the world since it was found as a natural exothermic process to permanently and safely sequester CO2. In order to accelerate the natural process, various methods for carbonation of Mg-/Ca-silicate minerals and other industrial wastes have been studied. It has been found that the MC efficiency will increase with an increase of CO2 pressure, retention time, temperature, mass ratio of Mg or Ca to Si in minerals, specific surface area, and the slurry concentration in a specific range, and with the introduction of an effective catalysts, for example, 1M NaCl and 0.64M NaHCO3 or carbonic anhydrase. However, there still is not a successful industrial application because of high economic cost and slow reaction rate. It is not economic to exploit Mg- and Ca-silicate minerals deposits or tailings to sequester CO2 by MC, due to the cost of grinding and heat pre-treatment and in some cases the whole sequestration process may result in more CO2 emissions than the amount of CO2 sequestered, due to the requirements of energy inputs. The process however, may be profitable as a whole (with carbon credits). It is suggested to combine MC with recovery of valuable metals from ore deposits in order to reduce the cost for MC by cost sharing for mineral recovery.

About 1973 the abrupt decrease in crude oil shipments due to political action by Middle Eastern suppliers, caused a shortage and a steep price rise. In response, Canada had to develop strategies of diminishing consumption and increasing production in both traditional and environmentally friendly resources. To clarify the situation in Canada, there are brief histories of energy (discovery, pipelines), manufacturing and science development, 1800-1970. Energy strategies, both nationally and in Quebec, succeeded in curbing consumption and in expanding production while fostering research in renewable sources. The industry-sector committees provided free exchange of conservation techniques through the federal energy ministry, with progress reports issued annually. Pipeline history in North America is reviewed along with manufacture and construction plans in Canada. Considerable success in all the aspects provided long lasting benefits, but after the embargo was lifted, many research initiatives were gradually abandoned for political reasons. Sustainability is the goal; society must conduct conserver analysis, legislation and action to enhance it.

This paper studies the features of known and newly synthesized dialkyldithiophosphates and reagents with thioamide groups when separating copper-containing and arsenic-containing minerals in the flotation of skarn-scheelite-sulphide ore at the Primorskaya concentration plant. The optimization of dialkyldithiophosphate collectors was based on the study of their surface activity at the liquid-gas interface and estimated hydrophobic abilities. The flotation experiments show that the selectivity of action of the reagent increases with an increase of its surface activity and a reduction of hydrophobic ability when separating chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite. IMA-225-5 was proposed as a more efficient dialkyldithiophosphate collector, which increases the recovery of copper by 2.8% compared to the industrially used collector IMA-I413. Selection of the optimal structure for reagents with thioamide groups (derivatives of thionocarbamate and thiourea) was carried out according to their acidity and the presence of hydrophilic particles in their structure. Calculations were performed depending on the pH of the solution of chalcopyrite to determine the optimum reagent sorption and to further optimize the structures of these reagents. The tests with reagents with thioamide groups show an increase in copper recovery by 3-4% together with a significant increase of arsenic content compared to IMA-225-5. As a stronger collector with thioamide groups, it was recommended to use sample 234, which belongs to the thiourea derivatives. IMA-225-5 was recommended for industrial tests at the Primorskaya concentration plant. Thus, this study has shown that using dialkyldithiophosphate is more appropriate if it is necessary to increase the selectivity of separation of copper-containing and arsenic-containing minerals, and using reagents with thioamide groups, or their combinations with dialkyldithiophosphates, is more appropriate if it is necessary to increase the recovery of copper or the quality of copper concentrate with less selectivity of the process.

Shaft lining reinforcing analysis of two shafts under construction has been presented in this study. The first shaft was driven from the surface, while the second was deepened. Mining and geological conditions have been studied with respect to the lining capacity. The improvement of shaft stability comprised two elements, i.e. reinforcement of the shaft lining capacity and improvement of the strength properties of the rock mass. In both tested cases, the particular hazard was connected with non uniform loadings of the lining, which could generate shearing stresses within lining structure. Thus such elements as armored concrete with high strength properties, bolting and injection sealing of the rock mass, and the use of special ring reinforcing the shaft lining have been used in order to reinforce the shaft-rock mass system. Practical conclusions related with new technological solutions, allowing the rock mass and shaft lining reinforcement, have been included for the present study. The Ambatovy Joint Venture comprises an operating lateritic nickel mine, ore slurry pipeline, pressure acid leach plant and nickel refinery in Madagascar. The hydrometallurgical process selected by Sherritt for treatment of the Ambatovy ore is a long-term, sustainable approach to producing nickel. Sulphur, used to prepare hydrogen sulphide, which is used to produce mixed sulphide intermediate, is recovered in the refinery as ammonium sulphate fertilizer. Additional sulphur is used to generate sulphuric acid for treatment of the ore in the high pressure acid leach (HPAL) step; fossil fuel consumption is minimized by using the heat generated from the exothermic reaction between sulphur and oxygen in the acid plant to produce power and steam. Steam consumption is minimized by design of efficient flashing and preheat systems for HPAL, while the high temperature of the HPAL step serves to minimize acid consumption. Fossil fuel consumption by the operation as a whole is further minimized by locating the leach plant and refinery near the port of Toamasina and utilizing a 220 km slurry pipeline to transport ore from the mine to the leach plant. In addition, Ambatovy has demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainability programs such as the biodiversity management program at the mine and local procurement in Madagascar. In this paper, the hydrometallurgical process for nickel and cobalt recovery from Ambatovy ore is described, along with highlights of Ambatovy’s approach to sustainability in Madagascar.

"Precipitation of gypsum and the formation of scale may pose a serious challenge in the leaching of several minerals. As an example, precipitated gypsum may form scale in the machines increasing the need for maintenance. Alternatively, it may encapsulate precious elements, i.e. gold and lower the recovery during subsequent leach processes. In this work we explore how different biopolymers modify the rheology of gypsum at three different pH levels at ambient and elevated temperatures. The ability to disperse gypsum vary with temperature, pH and biopolymer. It is also inversely related to the scaling potential. Measurements of the zeta potential as a function of increasing amounts of biopolymer reveals that the magnitude of the zeta potential changes in the presence of biopolymer, and so does the ability to disperse the gypsum suspension. Similar results with hematite will also be discussed. The methodology and results may aid in the selection of additives used in mineral processing applications where scale pose a problem.INTRODUCTION Processing of refractory gold ores normally involve either atmospheric or oxidation under pressure in order to convert sulfides to oxides (Weir, King, & Robinson, 1986; Weir, Robinson, & King, 1986). This conversion facilitates leaching of gold (and silver) in normal CIL processes. During oxidation, sulfides are converted to sulfates. Normally, there is an abundance of calcium ions in the process water, either released from the ore or added as lime to adjust pH for the CIL process. Precipitation of calcium sulfate, or other compounds (calcium carbonate, jarosite, hematite) is a way to remove gangue minerals from the solution entering the CIL circuit (Ji, King, Fleming, & Ferron, 2010). Precipitation may also cause challenges in the process as gold (or other valuable elements) may become encapsulated in gangue. (Beauchamp, Choung, & Xu, 2006). In addition to precipitation, the precipitated gangue minerals may solidify and form scale in the processing equipment. Recently, Lauten and Kluck (2016) found that dispersants used as scale inhibitors to prevent encapsulation of gypsum did not modify the solubility of gypsum. In the utilised model system, similar amounts of gypsum precipitated with and without dispersants. Instead, it was found that the dispersants evaluated as scale inhibitors reduced the yield stress of gypsum suspensions. The reduced yield stress was associated with a reduced tendency for gypsum particles to agglomerate and form scale."

This study aims to recover europium, yttrium metals, some valuable salts or oxides from the white powder (apatite) coating the inner surface of spent florescent lamps (SFLs). Pressure leaching using sulphuric/nitric acid successfully dissolved the metals of interest. Europium or yttrium metals were obtained by hydrogen reduction of their oxides. Addition of potassium thiocyanate converted the dissolved sulphates to thiocyanates. Selective separation of Eu and Y was then carried out by solvent extraction from the thiocyanate solution. The used solvent was trimethyl-benzylammonium chloride. N-trihutylphosphate in 1 M nitric acid was used to strip the metal loaded in the organic phase. Results showed that the quality of the cleaned glass tubes of the SFL met the standard requirement for the lamp manufacture. The white powder (WP) is composed of calcium sulphate 35.2%, phosphate 61.5% and oxides of europium and yttrium 1.65%wt. respectively. Autoclave digestion of the WP for 4 h at 120°C and 500 kPa in sulphuric acid/nitric acid mixture dissolved 96.4% of yttrium and 92.8% of europium. The conversion rate of sulphate to thiocyanate was favoured at low temperature. Stripping of Eu and Y from the loaded organic phase behaved in an opposite way. A metal separation factor of 9.4 was obtained. ate recovered europium and yttrium salts were selectively separated using ethyl alcohol or dilute nitric acid. Yttrium was very soluble while europium was not. Europium and yttrium metals were obtained by hydrogen gas reduction at 850°C and 1575°C respectively.

"Fluorspar mining in the St. Lawrence area of Newfoundland and Labrador began in the 1930s and ended in the mid-1980s. In 2013, Canada Fluorspar (NL) Inc (CFI) discovered a new ore body, the AGS vein, which proved amenable to more economic open pit mining methods and began developing this resource. This paper discusses the flowsheet development of the AGS vein deposit. Testing at SGS began in 2009 with samples from other deposits in the area. The testwork included pilot-scale dense medium separation (DMS), laboratory-scale flotation tests to develop the flowsheet and a flotation pilot plant. The more recent work that is presented here has been devoted to the AGS vein, and included a variability testing program that gave tremendous insight into the metallurgical drivers of processing the deposit. The ore was found to be fairly variable in terms of fluorite grade, but also gangue mineralogy, which had greater implications on the DMS performance. The gangue mineralogy was also found to significantly impact the grindability characteristics of the DMS product. This paper will detail the testing conducted and the mitigating steps which were identified for the operation.INTRODUCTION Fluorspar is the industrial trade name for the mineral fluorite (CaF2), which is the primary industrial source of fluoride. There are a number of categories of fluorspar, most notably acid-grade fluorspar and metallurgical fluorspar (metspar). Acid-grade fluorspar has stringent specifications and is suitable for the production of hydrofluoric acid that is used for many applications. The typical specifications of acid-grade fluorspar are >97% CaF2 and less than 1% each of SiO2 and CaCO3, with a particle size distribution in the order of 80% passing 100 µm. Metspar is typically used for metallurgical purposes, typically as a flux in smelting, and has significantly more relaxed specifications (< 15% SiO2). The principle source of fluorspar in Canada has been from the Burin Peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador. More than 3 million tonnes of fluorspar were produced there between 1940 and 1978 and from 1987 to 1990, when production ceased (Fulton & Montgomery, 1994)."

"As sulfide zinc ore deposits become exhausted, nonsulfide zinc ore deposits become the other resource for zinc production. However, flotation for zinc recovery from nonsulfide deposits is much more difficult than the flotation of sphalerite from sulfide deposits and may become an option for zinc production only if a suitable processing technology is developed. In this regard, research efforts are being devoted to the flotation of nonsulfide zinc oxide minerals. Some common methods which have been used for the flotation of zinc oxide minerals include sulfidization-flotation, activation, and direct flotation with anionic and cationic collectors. The traditional flotation techniques have low efficiency and difficulty in separation and recovery of the zinc minerals from gangue minerals, for example, smithsonite (ZnCO3) from other carbonate gangue minerals and hemimorphite (Zn4Si2O7 (OH)2·H2O) from silicate gangue minerals. In this study potassium lauryl phosphate was evaluated as a collector for the flotation of nonsulfide zinc minerals. Results from contact angle and microflotation experiments at pH 6–9 show that hemimorphite (Zn4Si2O7 (OH)2·H2O) can be floated from quartz and that smithsonite (ZnCO3) can be floated from calcite. However, when dodecylamine, which is a common collector reported in literature for the flotation of nonsulfide zinc minerals, was used as collector, no significant difference between nonsulfide zinc minerals and gangue minerals was observed at any pH value. Initial evaluation suggests that potassium lauryl phosphate is effective at low concentration and may be a promising collector for zinc oxide mineral flotation.INTRODUCTIONBefore the twentieth century, zinc was mainly produced from nonsulfide ores (Large, 2001; Gilg, Boni, & Cook, 2008). With the development of differential flotation processes in the late 19th century major production switched from nonsulfide zinc sources to sulfide zinc ores (Hitzman, Reynolds, Sangster, Allen, & Carman, 2003; Gilg et al., 2008). However, as it is becoming more difficult to find new sulfide ores, recovery from nonsulfide deposits is being considered. Nonsulfide flotation for zinc recovery is much more difficult than the flotation recovery of sphalerite from sulfide deposits and may become an option for zinc production if a suitable technology is developed. Zinc and lead oxide ores are difficult to beneficiate ores due to their similar floatability with gangue, high solubility in water, and the influence of slimes (Fa, Miller, Tao, & Li, 2005). In order to improve the performance of oxidized minerals, lots of effort is being devoted to this field of study (Ejtemaei & Mahdi, 2014)."

The precipitation of Al2Cu particles in a 319 T7 aluminum alloy has been modeled. A theoretical approach enables the concomitant computation of nucleation, growth and coarsening, based on an implicit scheme using the finite differences. The equation of continuity is discretized in time and space in order to obtain a matricial form. The inversion of a tridiagonal matrix allows us to determine the evolution of the size distribution of Al2Cu particles at t + dt. The fluxes of solute in-between the boundaries, as well as the ones at the boundaries, are computed in order to respect the conservation of the mass of the system. The main results of the model are compared to TEM measurements. Simulations provide quantitative features on the impact of the cooling rate on the size distribution of Al2Cu particles in good agreement with the TEM measurements. This metallurgical model is integrated into FEA software in order to perform mechanical computations. This kind of multiscale approach allows new perspectives to be investigated in the process of designing cylinder heads. It enables a more precise prediction of the microstructure, its evolution as a function of continuous cooling rates and its impact on the integrity of the structure.

Present conventional techniques for primary steelmaking in both integrated and non-integrated plants are outlined. 'Direct reduction' alternatives are reviewed and categorized according to the nature of the product produced, with particular emphasis on the limited number designed to yield steel as the end product. A proposed new technique, referred to as the Sherwood Process, is described in some detail as a new combination of selected features from the prior technology. This process is in-tended to realize, in integrated operations, the result of continuons steelmaking directly from the ore in a single plant and, in non-integrated operations, continuons steel-making from a metallic charge of scrap, sponge iron or pig iron. Prominent features are continuons processing in elongated, horizontal, rotary furnace equipment, controlled direct heating of each process stage and, for the over-all integrated process, a size separation for removal of excess solid reductant and other waste just prior to the melting step. Material and energy balances are presented as well as exemplary cost data. Reasons for selecting this particular combination of process elements are dis-cussed.

TWO summers ago I had the privilege of visiting No. 18 colliery at Glace Bay. Underground, we travelled along the haulage-way behind a powerful electric locomotive. The motor in this locomotive began to smoke badly and a carbon tetrachloride type of extinguisher was used several times during the trip. At the time, I noted a strong odour of phosgene. On my return to Sydney, I spoke to Mr. Harold Gordon, Assistant to the General Manager of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation, and warned him of the danger of using this type of fire extinguisher in confined spaces, since it is a well known chemical fact that phosgene, a dangerously toxic gas, is formed by the decomposition of carbon tetrachloride. This danger does not seem to be widely recognized, so it seems advisable that a more general warning be published. Attention was first drawn to the danger by the death of two men in the United States Navy Department subsequent to breathing fumes from carbon tetrachloride used in a fire, and when an employee of the Bureau of Mines also was overcome while fighting a fire with carbon tetrachloride liquid. These accidents led to an investigation of the decomposition products of carbon tetrachloride by a group of workers in the Research Laboratory of the Pittsburgh Experimental Station, U.S. Bureau of Mines, the results of which were published in the October, 1920, number of the Journal of the .Franklin Institute (1). Their experiments were conducted by two methods. The first consisted in applying the liquids to actual fires and -to hot metal in a closed room of 1,000 feet capacity, where the gaseous products, mixed with air, could be retained and analyzed. The second method was to pass the vapour:s in air through heated tubes of iron or quartz, where the humidity of the air and the temperature could be controlled.

"A theoretical framework based on a detailed analysis of mine operations data from an oil sands mine in northern Alberta and the static simulation of truck cycle times are developed, verified, and validated in this paper. Implementation of this framework provides better results than existing tools that rely solely on manufacturer data. This, therefore, aids in efficient equipment planning for the life of the mine. The use of this framework to modify existing productivity curve estimation methods currently in use at the mine site is also proposed. This method replaces “loaded flat haul” with “loaded effective flat haul” in the productivity estimation. Validation of the model results in a 4% overestimation of productivity, versus an underestimation of more than 10% when using the existing in-house method. ¦ KEYWORDS Equipment planning, Life-of-mine (LOM) planning, Oil sands, Productivity, Truck cycle times RÉSUMÉ Un cadre théorique fondé sur une analyse détaillée des données relatives aux activités minières d’une exploitation de sables bitumineux dans le nord de l’Alberta et la simulation statique des temps de cycle des camions sont développés, vérifiés et validés dans cet article. La mise en oeuvre de ce cadre offre de meilleurs résultats que ce que proposent les outils existants, lesquels se basent uniquement sur des données des constructeurs. Ceci contribue donc à une planification efficace de l’équipement pour des projets relatifs à la durée de vie de la mine. On propose également de se servir de ce cadre pour modifier les méthodes d’estimation de la courbe de productivité actuellement utilisées sur le site minier. Cette méthode remplace le concept de loaded flat haul (la distance parcourue par des camions avec un chargement du point de collecte jusqu’au point de déchargement des résidus miniers) par celui d’effective loaded flat haul (la distance relative parcourue par des camions avec un chargement du point de collecte jusqu’au point de déchargement des résidus miniers) dans l’estimation de la production. "The Mining Laboratories of CANMET are the principal federal government vehicle for the delivery of mining research in Canada. With research being performed at five locations, which are mostly mining communities, the laboratories are in close proximity to the industry which they serve.The Mining Laboratories have three principal roles: (1) to support government in its development of policy; (2) to aid industry in the enhancement of productivity; and (3) to improve the health and safety of Canadians,both in the workplace in mines and around abandoned mine sites.From 1994 to 1996, CANMET’s mining research was re-focused into four programs. These are: (1) Underground Mine Environments; (2) Mine Mechanization and Automation; (3) Ground Control, and; (4) Coal Mining Health and Safety.In this paper, the authors outline the work of the Mining Laboratories and also identify the areas considered to be primary targets for future mining health and safety research in Canada."

Introduction The pages that follow present a brief chronological survey of views which have been held, and of legislation enacted, for the regulation of the natural gas and oil industry in the Turner Valley field, especially as regards conservation of the natural gas. To provide a necessary background for an adequate understanding of the progress of events in western Canada, there is included also a compilation, from technical and legal authorities, of some of the more important measures which have been adopted for the regulation of the oil and gas fields of the United States, where these measures have had, or are likely to have, a bearing on the course of our domestic industry. Owing to exigencies of space, it has been possible to refer only to the most outstanding proposals and legislation, and to these in the briefest possible form. Although, so far as Canada is concerned, the data presented are restricted almost entirely to the Turner Valley field, it is the hope of the writer that the paper may prove of value for purposes of reference: for any similar gas and oil fields discovered in western Canada will certainly revive and intensify the problem of the proper steps to be taken for the conservation of the gas. Definition of &apos;Conservation The term conservation has been so misunderstood and misrepresented that, to many persons in Alberta, it means little more than closing-in wells. In the light of the definition of Charles E. Hughes, that &apos;True conservation of a raw material is its economical use&apos;, the subject of natural gas conservation is inseparably involved with the study of the function of the -gas and with the development of the principles of unit operation.
