"Block and panel cave mining methods are being increasingly proposed as they allow massive, deeply situated ore-bodies to be mined economically at a time when discovery rates of significant near surface deposits are declining. Cave-to-Mill, a mine-to-mill approach for block cave mines, defines ore block models with respect to both mine and mill performance. A cave-to-mill study for the New Afton block caving operation focused on identifying value opportunities related to fragmentation and sorting for a future lift as development progresses deeper. The lack of selectivity and potential for dilution associated with the block cave mining method results in many caving operations having to mine and either dispose of or process material that is below cut-off grade at certain stages of production. As an outcome of the study, the variation in cave fragmentation size and the sensitivity of mill throughput to feed size was examined. To evaluate the amenability of bulk and particle sorting, Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis and X-Ray Fluorescence sensors were tested. A conceptual bulk and particle sorting flowsheet is presented. Grade data from regular underground sampling was used to predict the performance of a bulk sorter. A heterogeneity analysis of material reporting to drawpoints helped to identify areas of the extraction level that experience high variations in grade and thereby stand to benefit from dedicated ore and waste material handling systems should underground bulk sorting be implemented.INTRODUCTION Block and panel caving are low-cost underground mass mining methods that are suitable for excavating weak, massive and steeply-dipping orebodies. Accordingly, cave mining methods have predominantly been used to mine copper porphyry and diamond bearing deposits. Due to the increasing depletion of near-surface orebodies, it is expected that block and panel caving methods will be increasingly used in the copper-gold industry. Their implementation holds significant potential to extend the life of existing open-pit operations by providing an economic means to access ore located at depths that are beyond the practical limits of open-pit mining. Examples of cave mines proposed for British Columbia include the Kwanika Mine, Red Chris underground, Kemess Underground project, and the Iron Cap and Mitchell cave mines of the Kerr-Sulphurets and Mitchell (KSM) project (Moose Mountain Technical Services, 2017; Imperial Metals, 2017; Golder Associates, 2017; Tetra Tech, 2016)."

"Abstract -Biotite from aplite that appears to have crystallized simultaneously with disseminated Cu-Mo mineralization at MacLeod Lake in northern Quebec yields K-Ar dates in the range 2032 ± 44 Ma to '2f1:)1 ± 47 Ma. The mean value, 2065 Ma, is some 400 Ma younger than the 2485 ± 64 Ma date obtained from a hornblende concentrate separated from a granodiorite sill that is spatially, but apparently not genetically, associated with the disseminated Cu-Mo deposit. The mean biotite date of 2065 Ma at MacLeod Lake, a K-Ar date of 2055 Ma reported from an area 50 km east of MacLeod Lake and published dates of about 2000 Ma for galenas from the Chibougamau Cu-Au ores, suggest a widespread thermal and mineralization event, in that part of the Superior Province east of James Bay, that differs from the common late Archean mineralization that is related to volcanism and metamorphic-intrusive activity.Sommaire - Les datations au K-Ar sur des biotites qui auraient cristallisé en même temps que la minéralisation disséminée en Cu et Mo dans une aplite mise en place au Lac MacLeod, au nord du Québec, s'échalonnent entre 2032 ± 44 Ma et '2f1:)1 ± 47 Ma. "Water in mining is the commodity that has driven the mining industry for decades. Often used frivolously, modern economic and social pressures are forcing change to use less water and to improve the quality of water and effluents. Used in many processes, water is ultimately consumed in tailings disposal and technologies which can increase the recovery of water are constantly being developed. Filtration and thickening are often seen as competing technologies for water recovery however new cases are developing that show significant advantages can be achieved by combining the two technologies to develop the most effective solution. Supported by case studies this paper investigates the merits of each of the technologies and which strategies of combining the two produce the best outcomes.INTRODUCTIONMineral processing applications generally require water for the processing of ores, whether utilising physical or chemical methods. Water is first added in the milling stage and additional water added as required throughout the circuit. Water losses from the circuit are principally associated with the tailings stream. Optimised water recovery is necessary both because it is a scarce commodity and to minimise the environmental impact.Water recovery is usually accomplished through a sedimentation or filtration processes. Water can be removed from the tailings impoundment by evaporation but this does not improve the mine’s water consumption. The water recovery methodology also determines the water quality; increasing water recovery concentrates solutes in the process water and may create recirculating loads of fine solids."

Ammoniacal solutions are an effective lixiviant for the oxidative dissolution of some mineral sulphides. A detailed study of the anodic dissolution of chalcopyrite in ammonium sulphate-ammonium hydroxide solutions has been carried out using cyclic voltammetry, chrono-amperometry and rest potential measurements. The role of the copper(II)/copper(I) redox couple in the oxidation process has been evaluated. Rest potentials have been found not to be affected by oxygen but to increase with an increase in initial copper(II) concentration. Pseudo-steady-state anodic current densities measured in the absence of copper(II) ions at the rest potentials obtained in the presence of copper(II) ions increase with increasing concentration of copper(II) ions, confirming the positive effect of copper(II) ions on the rate of dissolution of the mineral. Cyclic voltametric and chrono-amperometric data show that in the absence of initial copper(II) ions, the rate of dissolution in the presence of dissolved oxygen is significantly lower. These results confirm that the effective oxidant for the mineral under the conditions of the study is copper(II) and not dissolved oxygen. Coulometric measurements have been used to establish the stoichiometry of the anodic reaction at different potentials.

From the early 70?s, ?Centre de Recherche Minérale? (CRM) has conducted and co-ordinated Research and Development activities for the mineralurgical and metallurgical industries. Since 1999, CRM has continued its mandate through COREM which is a consortium of 13 members that uses the benefits and advantages of collaborative pre-competitive industry / university research. In particular, COREM?s ?In-Situ Optimization Group? is involved in the implementation of modern optimization and control tools. The POP Project was launched in order to increase and consolidate the use of modern optimization and control tools and methods for mineralurgical and metallurgical processes. To ensure a successful transfer in the industry, there are a number of essential activities that have to be undertaken. These activities have been identified by COREM?s members and are grouped into three main modules: - R&D Module: Research and Development in universities, research centres and other partners; - Technology Transfer Module: integration of new tools and methods into the POP Software, industrial applications and technical support; - Training Module: education of new engineers in universities, continuing education of plant personnel through on-site workshops and resource networking by specific information exchange tools. This paper outlines the opportunities that led to the definition of the POP Project and describes its main modules. The main features of the POP Software are presented, the first application is described and finally, future developments are discussed.

According to the principle of similarity, the physical and chemical configurations of a system can be defined by ratios of magnitudes within the system and do not de-pend on the size or nature of units of measurement. In the present work, the similarity principle was utilized in evaluating the reducibility of various iron ores in a rotary batch furnace under optimum operating conditions. It was then used successfully to extrapolate the results, first to the operation of a 20-ft. pilot-plant kiln and then to an industrial-size 80-ft. kiln. By means of this systematic analysis of kiln operation, it was possible to increase the production capacity of the kiln considerably. T HE kilns used by the Strategic-Udy process for the partial reduction of iron ores are, in most aspects, similar to conventional calcining kilns. This paper describes the progresses used in the manufacture of steel wheel-centres, tyres and axles at the works of the Commonwealth Steel Products Co., Newcastle, N.S.W., Australia. The plant is adjacent to the Northern railway and consists of three main buildings, namely: the foundry, the forging and rolling shop, and the machine shop. The foundry contains a 6-ton Heroult electric furnace, together with all necessary mechanical appliances for moulding. Reheating furnaces, steam hammers and tyre rolling mill are installed in the forging shop. The machine shop contains lathes, boring machines, and hydraulic presses. Until this plant commenced operations all wheels used in Australia were imported, previ.ous to the war, from England and Germany, and latterly from England only. Besides being of great benefit to the country in that there is now a domestic source of supply of these articles, there is also the advantage of retaining the home market; and in addition, a small portion of the population are now engaged in highly technical occupations requiring a great degree of skill. The plant began to operate in October 1919, and by 1921 was in a fair way to meet the domestic demand for those articles of railroad equipment which it manufactures.

Ausmelt Top Submerged Lancing (TSL) Technology has gained widespread commercial acceptance in non-ferrous applications, including the processing of lead and zinc primary concentrates and secondary (post-consumer) materials. TSL is highly flexible and efficient, and is one of the few technologies which can process primary and secondary feeds, and use varying fuels, to deliver high recoveries and excellent environmental performance. With the recent high value of both lead and zinc, and an escalating awareness of the sustainable use of resources, focus on the processing of secondary feed material sources has surged. Ausmelt Technology has proven to be well suited to the economic recovery of values, with twenty-two (22) Ausmelt furnaces processing lead and zinc bearing feed sources now in operation, under design or construction. This paper describes Ausmelt's progress in the fields of lead and zinc processing, and developments in new processing areas such as EAF dust processing and linking to innovative hydrometallurgical technology. Ausmelt has recently committed to the Whyalla Zinc project as the owner/operator of a facility for the treatment of zinc bearing secondary feeds. This project is due for start up in the first quarter of 2008.

THIS PAPER has resulted from a preliminary draft of a background paper prepared anonymously for the Science Council's Special Study of the Solid-Earth Sciences in Canada. The draft was circulated to eighty-four Canadian geologists; forty-eight of these responded with criticisms of the draft. All critical re-marks were considered carefully and most have been incorporated in the final paper in an attempt to balance the author's bias, although this bias undoubtedly still appears. Indications of support for a particular statement or section were also helpful, because many of these contradicted criticisms and enabled the author to judge the consensus. Thus, all criticism could not be incorporated because the referees did not agree. It is interesting that some remarks were con-sidered overstatements by some and too bland by others. The most perplexing critical comment was one which suggested a new author was needed, and went on to name the existing author as the most likely candidate.

"This two-part paper summarizes the design and implementation of a distributed PIbased control strategy installed at the B grinding circuit, at the Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Ltd. Part I details the design of the control strategy using a grinding circuit dynamic simulator (DYNAFRAG). The first step consisted of sampling campaigns and data processing to calibrate DYNAFRAG. Then, several control alternatives were designed and tested with the simulator. The main feature of these strategies is their ability to regulate or keep within an upper and lower limit five output variables (circulating load, rod mill density, cyclone feed and overflow densities and pump box level) with only three manipulated variables (rod mill water, pump box water and rod mill tonnage). By simulation on DYNAFRAG, it was possible to discriminate among several control structures. The preferred control strategy uses a saturation algorithm, which allows the adequate regulation of two measured variables with only one actuator. Controllers located in interacting loops are appropriately tuned, taking into account the existing process coupling. Part II will present the implementation of the selected control strategy.IntroductionSteady state simulators are used to predict the stationary state of a given process under specific operating conditions. Tradi - tionally, steady state simulation has been applied for process flowsheet design, for evaluating process modification benefits or for determining key operating parameters in process operation optimization. Dynamic simulators add a new dimension to process simulation since they allow the prediction of the process transient behaviour, resulting from the application of a different set of operating conditions and/or from natural disturbances or equipment failure. Dynamic simulators can also be used for the training of new operators or for the design of control strategies."

Among all spraying processes, cold spraying has attracted a special attention in recent years, both as a coating - and more recently - as a rapid manufacturing technique. The interest in this process is mainly because of the fact that the deposition of spray material takes place at moderately low temperatures, and thus, oxidation and unfavourable microstructural changes can be alleviated. In this process, a highly compressed gas, flowing through a de Laval nozzle, accelerates the particles of the spray powder to high velocities of up to 1200 m/s. Although there is no melting of particles prior to impact on the substrate, cold-sprayed deposits can be denser and more tightly bonded as compared to the equivalent deposits produced by conventional thermal spraying methods. The present contribution focuses on this unique aspect of cold spraying. Modelling of particle impact, combined with various experimental observations, is employed to illustrate that bonding of particles and hence material deposition occurs through shear instability - associated with severe plastic deformation and localized heat generation - at the interacting surfaces of particles and substrate. The results of modelling also provide an insight to the influence of material and process parameters on the critical velocity and on the microstructural properties of cold-sprayed deposits.

In the townships of Genoa and Marion, Subdury Mining Division, Ontario, there is a group of twenty-three mining claims known as the Jefferson claims. They are controlled by the Jefferson Mining Corporation and they were staked in 1908 by W. E. Smith, formerly of Sudbury, Ontario, and now of Smith & Reitz, a law firm of Minneapolis, Minnesota. These claims were staked for iron ore and in 1910 about 4000 feet of diamond-drilling was done on them. During the drilling operations galena and sphalerite ~were found in the iron formation in cores from holes, Nos. 2 and 3, claim W. D. 717, Genoa township. This discovery lead to a search for galena and sphalerite in the vicinity and a streak of rock containing these minerals was found in the iron formation a short distance to the east of. the drill holes. A shaft was sunk on this outcrop in 1912 to a depth of 8 feet and bottomed in an attractive lens of galena. Stripping revealed other small exposures of galena and sphalerite in the iron formation.

Au mineralization in the Kilpwal Gold Mine is confined to laminated quartz-carbonate lodes and associated alteration along the Klipwal Shear Zone (KSZ) in the upper Mozaan Group of the Mesoarchaean Pongola Supergroup. The brittle-ductile shear zone is characterized by inner and proximal hydrothermal alteration domains that are comprised of chlorite, epidote, sericite, pyrite, arsenopyrite and gold. Possible sources of gold are: (i) paleo-placer U-Au rich conglomerates from the lower Mozaan Group; (ii) the underlying mafic volcanics of the Nsuze Group; (iii) greenstone belts in the basement to the Pongola basin. Post-Pongola granites probably provided the heat to mobilize auriferous fluids into the KSZ.

Long-chain primary amines are utilized as collectors in potash ore flotation. Krafft temperature of long-chain amines in brine is about 100 °C, and this makes such amines practically insoluble in brine at room temperature. When dodecylamine, melted at 70 °C and dispersed in hydrochloric acid (or acetic acid) aqueous solution, is added to a KCl-NaCl saturated brine at room temperature, the amine precipitates. The experimental results demonstrate that the precipitating amine hydrochloride particles are selectively abstracted by KCl particles, but not by NaCl particles.

"Seepage is a major cause of earth-rockfill dam failure. Numerical simulation of infiltration process, distribution of drift, flow velocity and direction after the impoundment can guide seepage control and evaluate its effects. A double field coupling model is established based on soil consolidation theory and the interaction between the seepage field and the temperature field. The simulation is implemented under the situation of core wall setted, core wall not setted, and core wall setted with concentrated leakage. The results indicated that the saturation line height was significantly reduced due to impervious core wall, and the temperature distribution is uniform above the saturation line. If concentrated leakage occurs, temperature distribution of dam was significantly changed, which is consistent with theoretical inference.INTRODUCTIONEngineering seepage field distribution must be calculated in seepage control design, optimization, and correction of new engineering construction of earth dams, as well as in seepage monitoring and evaluation of existing earth-rockfill dams. The aim of calculation is to identify the important parameters in seepage field, such as the coefficient of permeability, seepage flow, pressure, head, and allowable seepage slope, for effectively implementing seepage control design, correction, safety assessment, and anti-seepage reinforcement. These seepage parameters usually can be obtained by in-situ test and back-analysis based on reliable monitoring data.In order to obtain reliable monitoring data and reflect the earth-rockfill dam seepage state and change process, appropriate monitoring technology and monitoring method is necessary. The traditional seepage monitoring method is through site inspection and sensors (e.g., osmometer, piezometric tube and measuring weir) that buried in the structure and its foundation. This article reports on the current state of an ongoing research project which is aimed at implementing intelligent models for hardly predictable hazard scenarios identification in construction sites. As past evidences showed that no programmatic action can deal with the unpredictable nature of many risk dynamics, we tried to survey on how the current approach for safety management in the construction industry could be improved. In our previous research the use of Bayesian networks elicited from subjective knowledge were preliminarily tested. Those networks might be meant as a reliable knowledge map about accident dynamics and they showed that a relevant ratio of occurrences fall in ?hardly predictable hazards? class, which cannot be warded off by programmatic safety measures. This paper reports the second outcome of our research project, which focused on the development of first elementary fragments, regarding the occurrence of a possible ?hardly predictable scenario?. Instead of experts? contributions (who, over their carrier, seldom incurred in accidents), we used ?legal cases? as an accurate source of information. They suggested which categories of ?hidden hazard scenarios? are more likely to happen. We found that the most frequent hidden hazard scenarios are linked to operator?s negligence and abnormal behavior, e.g. irregular removal of scaffolding?s components, unprotected openings, improper use of PPE, etc. Every pattern determined by legal cases has been formalized by a fragment (i.e. elementary network) of the overall Bayesian network. Finally, all the elementary networks were integrated into a comprehensive intelligent tool for realtime hardly predictable hazards prevention. The final setup, asked for interfacing these intelligent models to a low-level sensor network and used to feed them with inputs about the current state of the context, is discussed too.

The fishery of this section of the North Atlantic is a vital resource to which a major oil spill or blow-out would impose an intolerable burden, This means that production systems must be designed and built to be fail-safe.The experiences of mining in Bell Island and Cape Breton have shown that it is possible to operate beneath the ocean floor, and this technology may hold the key for safe, reliable and economic production, This paper attempts to define particular problems and outline possible solutions.IntroductionOUR DISCUSSION is subject to the assumption that large hydrocarbon reservoirs will be discovered in the sedimentary basin of the Labrador continental margin. The petroleum industry has not attempted to operate in a harsher area. The Labrador coastline is exposed to North Atlantic storms and icebergs year’round, Arctic pack ice occurs up to six months of each year. However, there is no doubt that, if sufficient hydrocarbon potential is outlined, development will proceed."
