In this paper, some applications of carbon extraction replicas, as samples for transmission electron microscopy (TEM), are discussed. Modern high strength microalloyed (HSMA) steels, used as structural or pipeline materials, have very small grains with substructures. Replicas used in TEM can resolve the grain boundaries and can be used for grain size measurements in cases where the small size of the grains pushes the resolution of conventional optical microscopes. The grain size variations obtained from replicas correlated very well with mechanical property variations, indicated by hardness, in the fine-grained heat-affected zone and base metal of some welded HSMA steels. Replicas are also very suitable samples for precipitate examination with analytical TEM. Advantages and limitations of the application of replicas, as well as some corrections for the estimation of the volume fraction of fine precipitates, are discussed.

More than a decade ago, CANMET management recognized the need to make better use of existing technological information in mining and extractive metallurgy-two fields basic to the economic well-being of Canada. There were at that time no indexes or files dedicated to disseminating technical information for the many minerals mined and processed in Canada, including coal. CANMET, with the nation's largest research and library resources in the minerals field, was in a unique position to fill this need. Initial efforts were concentrated on building a mining file, beginning with identification of world sources of published information, development of a special thesaurus of terms for language control and adoption of a manual indexing/retrieval system. By early 1973, this file held 8,300 references, with source, abstract and keywords given for each reference. In mid-1973, operations were computerized. Software for indexing and retrieval by batch mode was written by CANMET staff to utilize the hardware facilities of EMR's Computer Science Centre. The resulting MINTEC file-one of the few files of technological information produced in Canada-is the basis for the national literature search service in mining offered by CANMET. Attention is now focussed on building a sister-file in extractive metallurgy using the system already developed. Published information sources have been identified and a thesaurus of terms is being compiled and tested. The software developed for CANMET's file-building operations has several features, including the selective dissemination of information and production from magnetic tape of photo ready copy for publication, as in a bi-monthly abstracts journal.

Mineral engineering is defined as those engineering activities that relate to the discovery, development and utilization of mineral resources. Using petroleum engineering as an example, it is shown that the breadth of the field to be studied is a major educational problem. Breadth of field is aggravated by the rapidity with which technological demands may change. At present, special short courses serve to update engineering education. Recent experience suggests an increased rate of change for the future. The fact that engineers have typically human needs and goals, and the fact that engineers respond to these in our free society, introduces a third class of problems. One approach to the solution of these problems is the unified engineering curriculum based on a core of subject mat-ter common to all engineering. Experience suggests that the unified curriculum is an effective method to minimize the importance of the first two problem areas presented, and shows a degree of success in handling some problems within the third area. Perhaps, for the good of all segments of society, it is best to have both career-oriented and unified curricula represented by educational institutions of high quality.

Abstract-Narrow veins are an important world-wide source of silver, tin, uranium and particularly gold. To potential financiers, this style of mineralization is viewed as high risk because of the often relatively small resource involved and high cost of estimation. In many cases diamond core drilling will not enable resource estimation beyond the inferred and indicated categories. Exploratory underground development is required to define measured resources. The definition of geological and grade continuity are major factors in narrow vein assessment. A measured resource must be based on strong geological and grade continuities. Narrow veins, generally less than 3 m wide, are complex geological phenomena, which commonly display unpredictable geometry and grade distribution. Variations in structural continuity, dip, strike, width, mineralogy and specific gravity are common. Veins may be composite, with ore-grade mineralization restricted to a specific structural domain. Branches, intersections and braided zones are common features. Potentially high-grade zones are often localized within ore shoots, which are surrounded by barren/low-grade regions. Resources must be determined as closely as possible to reality and reflect the distribution of the commodity in the rock. Estimation has three main requirements: (1) geological study to determine orebody nature; (2) estimation of tonnage and grade, and (3) the presentation of this information using a classification that is clear, unambiguous and bankable. Estimation methods employed are either classical or geostatistical; however, classical methods are often used because of the difficulties in applying geostatistics. Grades generally show a strong positively skewed distribution testifying the presence of high-grade values. Problems exist in the applicability of cutting outlier values risking over- or underestimation of grade. It is generally believed that where resource estimates are in error, poor geological control is usually the cause. Overestimation can lead to the closure of a mine through lost revenue and capital. An understated estimate can result in an opportunity missed for profit and/or greater economies of scale. Definition of reserves involves the consideration of economic and engineering data, to decide which part of the resource is economically mineable. Geology plays a similarly important role at this stage in the assessment of likely mining method, dilution, recovery etc. Throughout resource/reserve estimation, it is crucial that the amount and quality of the data and the geologist’s experience are relevant. The impact of geological understanding on estimation is often undervalued or assumed to be of lesser importance than finding grades and tonnages. This paper discusses the geology of narrow vein deposits and the importance of geology in their evaluation.

AERIAL survey methods have made enormous technical advances and gained new recognition since World War II. Before enlarging on this statement and reviewing some of the uses of aerial survey in industrial development it is important to de-fine what is meant by "aerial survey". The subject will be discussed in the broadest sense and references will be made to the four sections that compose the overall field of surveying operations from the air. These are: 1. Aerial photography and photo-graphic mapping. 2. The use of airborne electronic instruments for geodetic distance measurement and the determination of ground elevations. 3. Airborne geophysical surveying. 4. The extraction of qualitative and quantitative information from aerial photographs through the processes of "reading", analysis and interpretation. Many sciences and techniques are combined in aerial survey operations. The writer presents a concise summary of eleven recent discoveries made in the Maritime Appalachian area, with suggestions for fur the research. This information may prove helpful to geologists working in other fields and to students contemplating further avenues of research in mining geology and exploration. INTRODUCTION THIS paper is not intended as a research study on the subject, but i. merely a brief review of eleven discoveries that have been made in the Canadian Appalachian area. Furthermore, this is not a critical analysis of the merits of any one geophysical method, but it is an un-prejudiced observation of how these discoveries were actually made and what techniques were apparently most fruitful. "AbstractThe Cargill phosphate deposit, located 32 kilometers southwest of Kapuskasing, Ontario, was discovered by the Resource Development Group of International Minerals & Chemical Corporation in 1975 and has been evaluated through an extensive program of 190 drill holes, numerous chemical analyses, metallurgical tests, and engineering and economic studies.The Cargill alkalic complex, comprising principally car-bonatite and pyroxenite-amphibolite rocks, was intruded in to the rift system of the Kapuskasing High during late Precambrian time about 1,800 million year s ago, near the intersection of northeast- and northwest- trending faults. The Cargill complex is one of at least ten known alkalic complexes in or close to the Kapuskasing magnetic-gravity-high system and is expressed by an elongated, northeast- oriented, three-part magnetic anomaly 7.2 kilometers long by 2.8 kilometers wide . Weathering and leaching under assumed temperate to cool, moist climatic conditions , and controlled by faulting, shearing and/or initial petrographic variations within the carbonatite , developed a small, locally confined karst system in the car bonatite rocks and resulted in a thick enriched leached carbonatite zone, capped by troughs and sinks, filled with a residuum of apatite, goethite, clay and other minerals stable in the near -surface, oxidizing environment. Overburden is 5 to 165 meters thick."

It also shows the involvement of the plant in the siting of a heavy water production facility in Cape Breton. The paper concludes with an outline of the new installations which the Nova Scotia Power Commission has undertaken as an extension to the Seaboard Plant.

Most pressure oxidation operations introduce oxygen through a large multi-use nozzle in the vapour space of the autoclave. Sparge pipes extend inside the vessel to the point of discharge below the compartment agitator. However, two zinc pressure leach operations have successfully used a bottom entry oxygen sparge system for a number of years. Recently, the concept has been used in a whole ore gold pressure oxidation operation as well as a copper pressure leach plant. Both of the latter operations also introduce cooling water for temperature control through the same sparge pipe. This paper addresses the benefits of the bottom entry system with regards to autoclave performance and the positive effects on agitator performance.

Most metallurgical industries generate toxic waste that must be treated prior to being released to the environment. However, in a lot of cases, the waste materials are poorly characterized or the analytical results are not well interpreted. These shortcomings often result in the development of inefficient industrial procedures, thus causing economic waste and difficulty meeting environmental regulations. Fortunately, a wide range of analytical techniques are available to guide researchers and engineers into making sound process development decisions. In this work, an industrial selenium and mercury removal process is used as an example to illustrate the application of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) on solid waste. Furthermore, samples of analytical results are presented and interpreted and the modifications to the industrial process that resulted are explained. Finally, a brief description of the advantages and limitations of the aforementioned analytical techniques is given with an emphasis on industrial solid waste material.

THIS paper discusses testing and quality control of milled asbestos fibre. It has been composed with the intention of: (I) Summarizing past, present and probable future methods of testing and classifying the various grades of commercial asbestos produced by the Quebec asbestos industry. (2) Acquainting those unfamiliar with the methods used for evaluating, testing and controlling the grading and the quality of Quebec chrysotile asbestos fibres with some of the physical and chemical procedures currently used for that purpose. (3) Discussing some of the complications facing the producers, such as variations in the orebody and special requirements of asbestos manufacturers. ( 4) Detailing some of the present quality control methods. "The following is a review of the advance of raise boring and its current position. The viewpoint presented is that the mining industry, through its worldwide acceptance of raise boring, has acknowledged the success of the method in general. Acceptance, however, does not imply complete satisfaction with either the equipment or current operating costs. Therefore, a brief review of how boring costs are being r educed is presented, citing examples. Recent raise borer applications of special interest are presented to show adaptability of current equipment, and some special projects in the planning stage are highlighted."

Acid resistant brick linings are state of the art for anti-corrosion linings in tanks for high pressure acid leaching (HPAL) treatment. The design of these brick linings has to take into account the almost non-elastic behaviour of the brick lining inside a relatively highly elastic steel vessel. There must be tools and data available to determine for the steel vessels the thermal growth plus the pressure expansion and for the brick lining the linear thermal expansion and the chemical swell. Thermal shocks and pressure drops are not regular operating events but their negative influence on the lifetime of a brick lining has to be a part of the engineering study. Finite Element (FE) models as well as a lot of research and development on brick lining materials is the only way to find a path through the complex engineering work for pressure vessels.

THE term "high pressure", as used in industry today, is applied rather loosely. Generally, it refers to pressures that are higher than those encountered in most industrial processes although no definite limits are normally stated. For the purpose of this talk I should like to set rather arbitrary limits to the term "high pressure", and in ab-solute figures this would be the range from 1000 psi to perhaps 40,000 or 50,000 p.s.i. The scope of high pressure technology is very broad, and it would take more time than we have avail-able here today to cover fully even one aspect of the field. Therefore, I should like to discuss just some of the techniques used and problems en-countered in high pressure operations. Research work into the high pressure region dates back about 150 years, but it was not until 1910 that the first commercial application of high pressure technology was made in the production of ammonia.

"The Frood-Stobie Mine is by far the largest metal producer in the Sudbury area. Its efficient development was made possible by the consolidation of three mining properties that covered parts of the same ore body. They were known as the Frood Mine, the Frood Extension, and the Stobie Mine.The southwest or Frood portion of the orebody was discovered by Thomas Frood and A. J. Cockburn in 1884. Cockburn's interest was acquired by J. H. Metcalf and W. B. McAllister and patents were issued to Frood, Metcalf, and McAllister in 1884. The property was purchased by the Canadian Copper Company (lnco) in 1886.James Stobie discovered the northeast or Stobie part of the orebody in 1885. In 1886 Stobie and Rinaldo McConnell applied for the location and patent was issued in 1886. They sold the property to the Canadian Copper Company (lnco) the same year.The Frood Extension property included very little of the ore zone at surface but it covered ore down the dip from Frood. Frank Cochrane was granted title to the property in 1908 and sold it to the Mond Nickel Company in 1910. The title was transferred to the International Nickel Company in 1929 at the time of the Inco-Mond merger.Prior to 1930 the three properties produced a total of about 1 ,000,000 tons of ore from mining done during the periods 1887-1903, 1913-1915 and 1925-1929. Since 1929 the Frood-Stobie operation has produced more than 120,000,000 tons of ore, about half from open pits and half from square set and blast hole stoping. The current production rate is in excess of 6,000,000 tons per year.The principal products from the ore are nickel and copper. The by-products are iron ore, cobalt, platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, gold, silver, selenium, tellurium, and sulphuric acid."

This paper describes the trends in recent years in explosives formulated to produce larger blast-hole spacings and over-all lower drilling and blasting costs in hard formations. A consideration of current rotary drilling costs per ft of hole and per ton of muck versus hole diameter indicates that it is now possible that we shall see much further use of lower-energy-content, lower-cost slurries and dry mixes, and larger-diameter and, in many instances, cheaper blast holes. These will be drilled on current or slightly larger blast patterns to yield the same energy input per ton of rock and similar fragmentation at lower costs.

THE PROPERTY of the Lamaque Mining Company, Limited, ?is located in the Town of Bourlamaque, seventy miles east of Noranda, in Bourlamaque township, Abitrbi county, north western Quebec. Gold production commenced at Lamaque in April, 1935, with an initial mill capacity of 250 tons per day. The capacity was doubled in November of the same year, and in December, 1937, it further increased to 1,200 tons per day. During the war years the mill operated at a reduced tonnage, but in 1951 milling units were added along with complementary crushing and shop facilities to bring the capacity to 1,500 tons per day. Finally, in 1953, the capacity was raised to 2,000 tons per day, which rate is being maintained at the present time. The total production at Lamaque from April 2nd, 1935, to December 31st, 1956, has been 9,168,901 tons of ore from which 2,208,168 ounces of gold was recovered. The total value of this production , excluding E.G. M.À.*, was $77,869,653.

This study examined the effects of pH and sulphate concentration on the surface charge and stability of alumina and pyrite dispersions. The relationship between these properties was investigated using measurements of electrophoretic mobility and settling velocity. The maximum aggregation for both minerals was observed near the iso-electric point (iep) where the force of repulsion is at a minimum. Aggregation decreased at pH values away from the iep, where an increased surface charge causes electrostatic repulsion between particles. Zeta potential data revealed that sulphate ions were adsorbed only on positively charged surfaces for both minerals. Adsorption of sulphates on the alumina surface increased aggregation by reducing the surface charge from >+25 mV to close to zero. These results indicate an electrostatic bonding of sulphate ions to alumina surface. Preliminary results on the interaction of pyrite and sulphate ions indicate a similar response.
