Preliminary studies of the potential for the production of warm water (up to perhaps 150°C) have been carried out in the Plains region of Western Canada. Production might be from depths as great as about 5 km . Natural waters in this temperature range are currently being used for space heating in other parts of the world. The geography and stratigraphy of the Prairie Provinces are reviewed in terms of their apparent potential for warm-water production. Temperature, salinity and other data provided by wells drilled by the oil and gas industry are reviewed and problem areas are outlined.

LKAB (Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB) is operating underground iron ore mine, with three beneficiation and pelletizing plants in Kiruna, Northern Sweden. The wet low intensity magnetic separation (WLIMS) is regarded as the crucial part of silicate mineral separation from the ore. The Kiirunavaara iron ore deposit shows a rather low content of silica (ca. 2.3 to 3.3 % SiO2) but the silica grade is expected to increase in the deeper parts of the deposit. This can be problematic in the case of DR pellet quality with an average silica grade under 0.75 % SiO2. A laboratory scale methodology was developed for the systematic characterization of the ore for mineral processing with the focus on silicates at the Institute of Mineral Processing, University of Leoben. This methodology is combining mineralogical, geochemical and process mineralogical characteristics. Automated mineralogy (QEMSCAN) was used to study the modal mineralogy, the distribution of silicate minerals in different particle size classes after comminution, the deportment of silicon (Si) between various silicates and degree of liberation and intergrowth of magnetite and silicates. Based on the mineralogical investigations, actinolite, phlogopite and even quartz and albite are the predominating SiO2 bearing minerals in the ore. The important result of the investigations was the discovery of two separate subtypes within the high silica ore type B2 based on their mineralogy and mineral processing characteristics. The crucial part of the investigations of intergrowths and liberation of magnetite results was the magnetic separation tests carried out with the Davis magnetic tube. The binary intergrowths of magnetite and the silicate minerals (mostly actinolite) are the most common type of mineral association discovered. The significant characteristics in the intergrowths of magnetite and actinolite are the fine-grained magnetite inclusions in actinolite which may end up increasing the SiO2 grade in the magnetite concentrate despite magnetic separation.

"INTRODUCTIONTetronics Research and Development Co. Limited has installed several plasma torches for steel heating in continuous caster tundishes. An extensive demonstration program on a 14 tonne tundish reported the following advantages of plasma heating.• close control of steel temperature to ± 5°C;• a reduction of the furnace tapping temperature of up to 20ºC, leading to savings in energy and refractories costs ;• improvement in steel quality, to produce a slab product with an equi-axed crystal structure and a reduced number of large sub-surface slag inclusions;• the virtual elimination of oxygen pickup in the tundish; and• the capability of making ferroalloy trim additions to the tundish to permit a change of steel grade during casting, greatly decreasing inventory costs.The Need for Tundish HeatingIn the continuous casting of steel, the function of the tundish is to transfer the molten metal between the ladle to one or more continuously fed casting moulds. Figure I shows a typical temperature profile of molten steel in the tundish over the first cast cycle. It is observed that a rapid drop in temperature occurs both at the start of the cast, due to the tundish refractories absorbing heat, and also during ladle changeover. In addition, as a result of thermal losses through the ladle sidewalls, there is a gradual decline in the bulk steel temperature over the entire heat cycle. Consequently, in normal tundish operation, it is necessary to cast with a high superheat (25°C to 30°C + above steel liquidus temperature) in order to prevent freeze-up of the strand. Problems of high temperature variation and the potential of the steel solidifying in the tundish are greater for small caster units of low thermal mass . A high steel superheat increases the steelmaking vessel process time and refractory wear and prevents the formation of a uniform equi-axed solidification structure in the cast steel, resulting in centre line segregation and porosity. The large drop in the casting temperature that occurs during unsteady state operation causes an increase in the number of sub-surface inclusions, reducing the value of the product. Accordingly, plasma heating may be employed to maintain the molten steel at an optimum temperature to produce a slab of consistent quality."

"Precious metals (PM) in copper anode slimes are traditionally recovered by pyrometallurgical processes. Due to the compliance with increasingly stringent environmental regulations, it has made hydrometallurgical processing an attractive method for recovery of precious metals, including relatively inert metals such as gold and platinum group metals (PGMs). In this paper, a new method to recover PGM from complex and difficult feed streams is described. Using a proprietary Advanced Ion Exchange (AIX) adsorbent which has a high selectivity for PGMs over other metals and can achieve high PGM mass loadings with a series of incredible pilot test data plus the business case generated from the study results are also presented in the paper.INTRODUCTIONPrecious metals in copper anode slimes are traditional recovered by pyrometallurgical processes. Fully hydrometallurgical processes for extraction and recovery of gold and silver from copper anode slimes were employed in major copper refineries since 1995, which was first developed at Rio Tinto Kennecott Utah Copper.In Rio Tinto KUC process, the wet chlorination and gold solvent extraction were utilized to enable recovery of gold and silver as well as other metal compounds. The availability of water and the interaction and amenability of gold processing in water-based solution makes it possible that gold and silver are produced in only five days, compared with a traditional pyrometallurgical process that took 45 days. Most copper refineries are still following the tradition, but the use of hydrometallurgical technologies is increasing as the world demand for metals increases, energy utilization, and environmental viability."

"Loading and transportation are important activities of the mining process. Automation of these activities in underground hard rock mining has been discussed for a long time. This paper deals with the performance evaluation of a prototype automatic Load-Haul-Dump (LHD) vehicle (a 7-ton GHH LF LHD model) operating in Zinkgruvan mine, Sweden. The purpose of the data analysis is to evaluate the operational and maintenance characteristics of the automatic LHD system in the mine. Graphical and numerical methods have been used for the statistical analysis of the data. IntroductionDuring the past years, the idea of integrated automation and tele-operation on Load-Haul-Dump (LHD) machines (Fig. 1) has attracted considerable interest in the Swedish mining industry. This is mainly due to the demand for improvement in the working environment and due to the rapid development of economic and reliable microprocessors for mining vehicles. Several advantages can be foreseen with the application of a Remote-controlled/Automatic LHD (RAL) system in underground mining. Some of them are (1)':• better utilization of working hours;• less interruption in production at shift changes;• better operational control of a fleet of vehicles;• improved safety; and• one operator may be able to operate more than one vehicle simultaneously."

"This paper presents an overview of the state-of-the-art in industrial and utility power metering and control systems with particular emphasis on Digital Power Meters and Power Demand Controllers.IntroductionModern micro-processor technology, combined with very fast, high accuracy analog to digital converters, is rapidly allowing economical, digital power instrumentation systems to replace the traditional electro-mechanical meters and equipment previously used for instrumentation, control and protection in industrial power systems. Consequently, instrumentation and Supervisory, Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems that were only practical for the very large utility or user are now available to smaller utilities and users. The information available includes sequence of event recording, trend logging, energy management cost allocation and automated load control, among others. The heart of any power monitoring system is the Digital Instrumentation Package (DIP) . These ""DIP's"" include Digital Power Meters (DPM's) and Power Demand Controllers (PDC's) as well as other specialized instrumentation packages such as Mini RTU's."

Evaluating the economic viability as well as the sustainability of the Circular Economy (CE) system requires a deep understanding of the distribution of all elements, compounds, alloys, materials etc. in flows. In this paper, the circularity of the copper value chain, including primary and secondary processing, is rigorously evaluated. The studied system comprises the metallic copper production from primary sources (from mineral to metal), copper-containing commodity production (copper is mixed with other metals) and copper recycling through secondary smelting to close the loop. This is linked to photovoltaic (PV) panels and battery storage. A simulation model of this system is created using HSC Sim, considering more than 30 elements (and its various compounds), 180 unit operations and 800 flows. From the mass and energy balances obtained through the simulation, an exergy analysis is conducted to evaluate the resource consumption from a second law (entropy) perspective. Additionally, these results are complemented through a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), the recovery of technology elements and by-products is discussed, while quantifying the losses through the value chain. Through the digitalization of the complete system, a better CAPEX and OPEX understanding of the metal recovery and losses can be obtained, as well as the associated resource consumption and environmental impacts. New flowsheets and technologies can be evaluated. Several scenarios show how the resource consumption and the environmental impacts are affected by the recovery of different materials to produce different products. INTRODUCTION A key challenge of the circular economy (CE) is the linkage and optimization of both resource and energy efficiency of the (renewable) energy infrastructure and the resource cycle depicted by Figure 1 simultaneously. In addition, the CE requires the linkage of all stakeholders as shown by Figure 1. This has been discussed in some detail by Reuter and Bartie (2019) and Reuter et al. (2019). Copper and all its associated technology elements is one of the key enabling metals that is an economical copper colored thread through CE society (Reuter & Kojo, 2014). The Metal Wheel (Figure 2) shows the linkage of and recovery of various elements associated with copper and other carrier metals. This reveals that copper acts as an important carrier metal because of its properties i.e. the wealth of technology elements it carries from geological ores, but also its capacity to act as solvent of valuable elements and thence a key closer of various complexly connected element and material cycles when these technology elements are released during copper refining. The same applies to all other carrier metals of modern CE society as shown for example recently in a lead policy brief (Blanpain, Reuter & Malfliet, 2019).

"At Teck-Corona Operating Corporation's David Bell Mine, a successful water quality management strategy has been established. This resulted from the development and application of process technology, allowing year round discharge of an effluent exceeding the chemical and biological standards set by the Ministry of Environment. This strategy aims at minimizing contaminant levels of effluents through optimization of reagent selection and reduction of effluent volumes through maximizing reclaim water usage. Concentrator and effluent treatment plant operating practices, process chemistry and the results of the water quality management strategy are reviewed.IntroductionThe David Bell Mine is located in the Hemlo gold camp 42 km east of Marathon, Ontario. The concentrator has a design throughput of 1000 tonnes per day. The processing of the run of mine ore ( - 15cm) involves the following unit operations: grinding in a semi-autogenous mill followed by a ball mill, thickening, pre-oxidation , cyanidation, and carbon-in-pulp gold recovery followed by electrowinning and refining.The David Bell Mine water quality management strategy is composed of the following items (Goodfellow and Meyer, 1991):• natural destruction of cyanide contained in the tailing water in a large shallow tailing pond ;• preliminary treatment of reclaim water in the grinding circuit for cyanide and heavy metal removal;• pre-oxidation of sulphide minerals in pipe reactors to reduce cyanide consumption using pure oxygen;• pH control in the grinding, pre-aeration and leach circuits to minimize the dissolution of stibnite while maximizing gold recovery; • close control of cyanide addition rates to the leach circuit to maintain the lowest possible levels;• a carbon column for gold recovery;• an effluent treatment plant for antimony and heavy metal removal; and• the use of final treated effluent for industrial water underground to minimize fresh water consumption."

"Recent amendments to the so-called ""flow-through share"" rules in our income tax legislation have given a new lease on life to this once popular investment vehicle.The original ""Dome funds"" for exploration in the Beaufort sea recognized the usefulness of flow-through share arrangements, but, by and large, flow-through shares have until recently not been able to compete effectively with other tax shelter instruments-mainly , limited partnership interests.This month, Tax Notes examines the new tax rules for investing in flow-through shares.IntroductionRecent income tax amendments have helped to rekindle investor and industry interest in so-called ""flow-through shares"" as a mechanism for mobilizing funds toward mineral exploration and development activities. In competing for investment funds, flow-through shares have historically placed a distant second in terms of investor popularity, being unable to compete with the more attractive features of limited partnership arrangements. However, primarily as a result of favourable changes to the income tax law, flow-through shares may be well poised for a comeback.This article examines the income tax considerations pertaining to issuing and investing in flow-through shares, and compares the former and the new income tax rules relating thereto. Of course, inasmuch as a flow-through share issue can involve various contractual arrangements between the investor and the issuer, there is a wide range of legal and business factors that generally have to be taken into account. Outotec is continuously developing our existing process equipment and new equipment solutions to enhance the Flash Smelting process. Thanks to the long operating history of the Outotec Flash Smelting process feedback from the numerous operating references are available and is utilized. The general goals for development work are to improve equipment performance, thus realizing savings in Smelter plant operation costs by increasing the process efficiency and online availability. Digitalization also opens new possibilities for the feeding equipment and furnace operation monitoring. These solutions will improve the safety and performance of the smelter, and provide process and equipment related information which has not been available earlier. INTRODUCTION The year 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of Flash Smelting. The technology was operated on industrial scale for the first time at the Outokumpu Harjavalta copper smelter in Finland in 1949. The Flash Smelting technology, is now owned and developed by Outotec Oyj and the first plant, is now owned by Boliden Harjavalta Oy. The two companies have been evolving throughout history by optimizing the process for various feeds and raw-materials, as well as through developing the equipment and operating practices. Even though sustainability was not a hot theme/topic during the first days of Flash Smelting, it has nevertheless been the key principle in guiding the development. This is well proven by the wide adoption of Flash Smelting for the processing of copper and nickel concentrates, mostly due to its ability to fulfil the economic and resource efficiency criteria demanded by its operators. Along with the process technology development, also development of the equipment has taken place over time. Outotec is continuously working on developing our equipment to better suit the changing need of our customers in the continuously changing operational environment. Orebodies are getting more challenging with lower ore grades and more impurities. Achieving high recoveries for all valuable elements becomes more difficult with high slag quantities and with the need to tackle the high impurity concentrations. There is a need for higher capacities in greenfield and brownfield smelters. The role of the Loss-in-Weight Feeder, the Air Slide and Concentrate Burner is to ensure even feed into the reaction shaft of the Flash Smelting Furnace, and to enable controlling the process well, thereby enabling the best performance for the customers smelter. The design of the Flash Smelting Furnace aims for high availability, long campaign and safe operation.

OwnershipGulf Minerals Canada Limited discovered the Rabbit Lake deposit in 1968. Mining operations began in 1975and were operated by Gulf until purchased by Eldorado Nuclear Limited in 1982. In 1988, Eldorado merged with Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation (SMDC) to form Cameco-A Canadian Mining &. Energy Corporation. The new corporation is one of the world 's largest uranium companies.Cameco's $1.5 billion in assets include the Rabbit Lake uranium mine (Cameco 100010); the Key Lake uranium mine (Cameco 66.67%; Uranerz Exploration and Mining Limited 33.33%); the Cluff Lake uranium mine (Cameco 20%; Amok Ltd. 80%); the Fuel Services Division at Blind River and Port Hope, Ontario (Cameco 100%); and a 100%); and a 48.75% interest in the Cigar Lake uranium deposit which is now at the test mining stage (Cogema Canada Ltd . 32.625% ; Idemitsu Uranium Exploration Canada Limited 12.875%; Corono Grande 3.75%; Korea Electric Power Corporation 2%). "Fractures in mine hoist drumshafts are rare. We know of no previously reported attempts to repair a fractured drumshaft; any feasible method would involve welding and the associated problems of distortion, crack formation and strength.In June 1984, a fracture was discovered in the drumshaft of the production hoist in the Teck Corporation, Lamaque Division Mine at Val d'Or, Quebec. Delivery time on a new shaft would have been at least six months. The shaft was repaired in ten days and the total out -of-service time was four weeks.This paper describes why the shaft failed, how it was repaired, and the special alignment procedures employed during re-installation to minimize stresses in the repaired area.IntroductionThe performance of a mine hoist drumshaft is absolutely critical to mine operation. An inoperable drumshaft means no hoist, which in turn means no production or mine operation.Fractures in mine hoist drumshafts are rare. Previously when they have occurred, no one has seriously considered attempting a repair because of problems involved. Any feasible method would involve welding, which raises several major problems - namely, metallurgical, alignment, and strength.In July 1984 this very situation occurred at the Teck Corporation, Lamaque Division Mine in Val d'Or, Quebec.It was recognized that a new shaft would take at least 6 months' fabrication and delivery time. However, having had some experience at repairing broken shafts in other machines under similarly desperate circumstances, and after due consideration, it was concluded that by applying the correct techniques and engaging the right expertise, it would be possible to perform a repair and have the mine back in operation within a month.Thanks to outstanding efforts by all, the repair was accomplished in ten days and total out-of-service-time was only four weeks. The causes of the failure were determined and the calculated stress levels confirmed by strain gauge measurement during operation.The success of this project was achieved by adhering rigorously to fundamental management and engineering principles."

"Fifty years of wear on the original carbon steel shaft of this hydro turbine necessitated repair operations in 1980. Both austenitic and martensitic stainless steels have been used individually as journal materials in separate trials on an80-inch long and 22-inch diameter radial bearing but neither one nor the other has been successful.The wear and cracking problems of the stainless steels leading to the present abandonment of both classes of stainless steel are described. In particular the dependence of the toughness of type 410 stainless steel on its tempering temperature and the susceptibility of that steel to quench cracking are highlighted because problems have been caused by both of these metallurgical factors.IntroductionAs part of a desire to improve the efficiency of a fifty-year old hydro-electric generating station on the Saint John River, the decision was made to change the journal and bearing material for the shaft bearings, which are stave-type bearings. For the initial fifty years of operation the bearings had been wooden (lignum vitae) and had run on the carbon steel shaft directly. For one of the four unit s at this station the performance of this combination has been truly excellent, and the remaining three sets of bearings had performed well. However there had been shaft wear on the units and the wear had made the shafts somewhat elliptical when a decision was made to install some sort of new journal on to three of the old shafts. [In addition to the wear on the carbon steel journals it was found that one shaft was significantly softer in the bearing area than it was immediately above the bearings (180 Vickers in comparison with 230 to 250 Vickers)] ."

"Hydraulic mining consists of coal erosion by powerful jet s of water from hydraulic monitors operated by remote control. The broken coal is crushed and mixed with water and then transported from the face to the surface using gravity whenever possible. This is a simple, safe and productive method. It will easily satisfy North American productivity standards if the structural features and coal properties are favourable for water jet cutting technology (Kaiser Resources Ltd. , hydraulic mine). General ConsiderationIn open-pit mines, placer mining (Fig. I) and hydroelectric construction projects, hydraulic earth moving techniques have been successfully applied. The stripping and transporting of the overburden has been accomplished by means of large monitor jets augmented by slurry pumps and pipes. An extension of this technique has led to the underground extraction of coal and ores. To date, the method has been most successfully used in undergrond coal mining, because the coal can be easily cut and flushed away by water jets, and the rocks of the roof strata can be left behind. Due to this favourable situation, the hydraulic mining definition only relates to the underground coal mines.At present, there are four basic types of hydraulic mining, which can be defined according to the coal breaking technique used in each case. The methods are briefly discussed below:(1) Coal excavation may be carried out by conventional techniques, but the mine is designed and equipped for the hydraulic transport of the mineral from the working place to surface. Under these circumstances, the coal breaking may not be influenced by the water jet, however it may be indirectly involved. For example, pre-loosening of the coal may be done by water infusion-hydraulic fracturing. Water may also be used to flush the broken coal, which has been excavated either by drilling and blasting or by mechanical cutting, into the transport flumes. In other cases, a mechanical loader may load the coal directly into the hydraulic transport system, without using any water for the extraction process. This hydraulic mining concept is primarily used for hard and impermeable coal, such as anthracite."

AZ31B-H24 Mg alloy sheets with a thickness of 2 mm were friction stir lap welded (FSLWed) at two tool rotational rates of 1000 and 1500 rpm and two welding speeds of 10 and 20 mm/s. The tensile behavior of the FSLWed AZ31B-H24 Mg alloy was then evaluated at low (-40°C), room (25°C), and high (180°C) temperatures. It was observed that the failure load increased with decreasing tool rotational rate and increasing welding speed. The maximum failure load occurred at a tool rotational speed of 1000 rpm and a welding speed of 20 mm/s at all temperatures tested. It was also noticed that at the high test temperature, the samples failed along the sheet interface, i.e. shear fracture. At the low and room temperatures, the samples failed on the advancing side (AS) of the top sheet near the interface between thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) and stir zone (SZ). The different modes of fracture observed are associated with the hooking defect.

"Fractures in mine hoist drumshafts are rare. We know of no previously reported attempts to repair a fractured drumshaft; any feasible method would involve welding and the associated problems of distortion, crack formation and strength.In June 1984, a fracture was discovered in the drumshaft of the production hoist in the Teck Corporation, Lamaque Division Mine at Val d'Or, Quebec. Delivery time on a new shaft would have been at least six months. The shaft was repaired in ten days and the total out -of-service time was four weeks.This paper describes why the shaft failed, how it was repaired, and the special alignment procedures employed during re-installation to minimize stresses in the repaired area.IntroductionThe performance of a mine hoist drumshaft is absolutely critical to mine operation. An inoperable drumshaft means no hoist, which in turn means no production or mine operation.Fractures in mine hoist drumshafts are rare. Previously when they have occurred, no one has seriously considered attempting a repair because of problems involved. Any feasible method would involve welding, which raises several major problems - namely, metallurgical, alignment, and strength.In July 1984 this very situation occurred at the Teck Corporation, Lamaque Division Mine in Val d'Or, Quebec.It was recognized that a new shaft would take at least 6 months' fabrication and delivery time. However, having had some experience at repairing broken shafts in other machines under similarly desperate circumstances, and after due consideration, it was concluded that by applying the correct techniques and engaging the right expertise, it would be possible to perform a repair and have the mine back in operation within a month.Thanks to outstanding efforts by all, the repair was accomplished in ten days and total out-of-service-time was only four weeks. The causes of the failure were determined and the calculated stress levels confirmed by strain gauge measurement during operation.The success of this project was achieved by adhering rigorously to fundamental management and engineering principles."

"Relining, lining maintenance, and ladle repair can represent a significant cost in steelmaking. Therefore, the objective of all steelmaking shops is to minimize this cost and to maximize the lining life. However, the thermomechanical behaviour of the ladle lining is highly complicated and sometimes misunderstood. The ladle design also has a significant influence on lining life. Other factors which have a direct influence on lining life are the shop lining installation practices and manner in which the ladle is used. The objective of this paper is to provide an understanding of the impact of these factors as related to improving the integrity of the lining and increasing lining life.Fundamentals of Steelmaking Ladle Lining Expansion ForcesNumerous studies have been conducted by the author on steelmaking ladles with molten metal capacities ranging from 110 ton s to 350 tons. The steelmaking ladle typically has a sidewall plate with a slight taper and for analytical purposes can be classified as a cylindrical vessel.A typical ladle is described in Figure I. The ladle sidewall lining usually consists of a working lining and a safety lining. Although the type of refractory used in the working lining varies based on the type of steel produced and other metallurgical requirements, the refractories typically used are: 70% alumina brick; direct bond mag-chrome brick; resin bond dolomite brick; and direct bond dolomite brick. Fireclay brick, high alumina brick, or a similar strength brick is used as the safety lining.Normally, the ladle lining is exposed to a through-thickness temperature gradient and restrained by the ladle sidewall plate, is described in Figure 2. The hot face side of the refractory lining develops a compressive thermal force and the ladle sidewall plate develops an equilibrating tensile force. The radial joints open on the cold side of the working lining as the lining joints have little or no tensile strength. A radial compressive load (P) develops between the working lining and the vessel shell due to the thermal restraint imposed on the lining by the shell. The radial compressive load is transferred from the working lining through the safety lining onto the ladle sidewall. Therefore, the safety lining must have the strength to accommodate the radial compressive load (P)."

"The Delnite mine is in the northwest part of Deloro township, Cochrane district. The property consists of 307 acres on the so-called 'South Break' in the Porcupine camp. The Company was formed in 1934 to take over the holdings of La Roche Mines, Limited. Gold has been produced continuously since June 1, 1937. The value of the gold recovered to date (December 31, 1946) has been $7,456,000, and the average grade of ore $6.81 a con.The ore at the Delnite occurs in relatively narrow, persistent, quartz-ankerite veins, which generally contain tourmaline and have a ladder-like structure. The gold occurs in the free state, and in association with pyrite and arsenopyrite, the two chief sulphides. The host rock is fine-grained, highly carbonatized andesite of Keewatin age."
