ACC ECOSAND is finely powdered crystalline silica, which can replace natural sand usage in concrete and plasters. ACC ECOSAND ensures a comparatively denser concrete than those made only with natural sand and / or quarry fines / Manufactured Sand (Artificial Sand). Moreover, there is a significant gain in compressive strength (10-15 %) & durability in concretes (Reduced chloride conductivity leads to increased durability). ECOSAND is a by-product of froth flotation of limestone. At ACC Madukkarai cement works, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, full-fledged mineral beneficiation process is adopted to enhance the usage of flotation reject in concrete and plasters. Optimum level for usage of ECO-SAND is 50%. With 50% usage of natural sand+50% ECO-SAND in concrete mix, 1 day, 3 day, 7 day & 28 day compressive strength is increased by 30.1 %, 22.6 %, 15.1 % & 11.0 % respectively and with moderate chloride permeability as compare to 100% Natural Sand. According to XRD, DTA and SEM detections, the hydration products of blast furnace slag (BFS) based cementing material SL, SLG. were studied in different age periods. The XRD analysis of cementing material SL hydration products showed that the composition of hydration products were mainly amorphous substances, few crystalline substances. Characteristic peak of ettringite hadn?t been found in the spectral line of DTA, and it hadn?t been found in the figures of SEM, either, which was accordant with the conclusion that the cementing performance of SL mainly coming from gel of hydrated calcium silicate (CSH) and hydrated calcium aluminate. However, the main hydration products of SLG are Aft, CSH, and AFm, which are similar to Portland cement. All results suggest that BFS is a suitable base material for cementation. "The research is aimed at solving the processing of waste products of titanium-magnesium production. The aim of the research is to extract synthetic carnallite and industrial products enriched with niobium from waste products of titanium-magnesium production. Analysis of the current state of the titanium and magnesium production in the Republic of Kazakhstan shows the availability of significant amounts of chloride wastes containing valuable components. Magnesium and potassium with an average content of 50-60 % potassium chlorides, 25-30 % magnesium chlorides are lost in the wastes of the titanium and magnesium production. Ust-Kamenogorsk Titanium Magnesium Plant JSC (UKTMP) currently imports carnallite that is a KCl-MgCl2X6H2O binary salt at quite high prices. Chloride wastes of titanium production, sublimates of dust chambers of a titanium chlorinator, sludge of a magnesium electrolytic unit and sludge of a carnallite chlorinator has been chosen as the targets of our research. The analysis of niobium distribution within any solid waste of a titanium slag chlorination process in UKTMP JSC showed that the highest content of niobium is in the sublimates of dust chambers of a titanium chlorinator in the ranges from 0.26 to 1.0 %. Among the niobium extraction technologies considered, the known method of its extraction from the chloride waste is leaching with weak solutions of mineral acids or alkalis in order to convert the chloride salts into the solution to be used for synthetic carnallite extraction. Besides niobium, other impurity components are transferred to the cake and shall be separated from the base metals. The effective method for this is the chlorination process enabling niobium transfer into the sublimates in the form of chlorides and thus separating it from the majority of the impurities. The condensed niobium chlorides are hydrolyzed transferring it into sediments in the form of oxide. New ways of processing waste products of titanium-magnesium production with the receipt of marketable products are relevant in the development of processing of mineral raw materials."

The objective of this study was to achieve Zn activation control in an industrial Cu flotation circuit treating a complex Cu-Pb-Zn-Au-Ag sulphide ore at the LaRonde Division of Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited (Québec, Canada). In order to provide process relevant results, a laboratory testing methodology was developed to duplicate plant operational parameters. The action mechanisms of ZnSO4, TETA (triethylenetetramine) and NaHSO3used as depressants in order to limit ZnS activation were examined. Laboratory flotation tests with and without Cu2+ions (the ions responsible for ZnSactivation)were performed. All depressants showed equal or better flotation performance relative to baseline tests. For example, in the presence of Cu2+, the Zn recovery reduced from 32.2% to 17.5% in the copper rougher concentrate after adding ZnSO4(with a dosage of 50 g/t). TOF-SIMS analyses confirmed the relative decrease in surface Cu in the samples treated with ZnSO4and TETA. For the case with TETA, this indirectlyindicates the formation of a copper TETA complex in solution, thereby reducing available Cu for transfer. The TOF-SIMS and XPS data indicate that the addition of ZnSO4and NaHSO3resulted in an increase in surface metal hydroxides and SO3 on ZnS grains inhibiting both Cu and collector attachment.ZnSO4 was subsequently tested with success in the LaRonde concentrator. The addition of 40 g/t ZnSO4 at the conditioning (or cleaning) stage led to a 2% reduction in Zn content in the Cu and PM concentrate. Recently, improvements towards the control of copper sulfate addition in the downstream Zn flotation circuit resulted in the reduction of Cu2+ in process water. As this ?cleaner? water is recycled for Cu and PM flotation, the addition of ZnSO4 is now used only as required.

"Raw materials are among the main building blocks of a growing economy. Without raw materials, no matter whether it is primary or secondary, production is not possible. Products with high added value require special materials. Recently, worldwide production of some important raw materials mainly comes from a handful of countries, for example: China (Rare Earths Elements (REE)), Russia, South Africa (Platinum Group Elements (PGE)), Democratic Republic of Congo (Cobalt), etc. In the EU as well as in Hungary, the importance of the so called 14 critical raw materials has been recognized. Within the frame of the TÁMOP-4.2.2.A-11/1/KONV-2012-0005 - CriticEL project, the Institute of Raw Materials Preparation and Environmental Processing in cooperation with the Institute of Mineralogy and Geology of the University of Miskolc are working on the exploration of the primary and secondary sources and developing innovative preparation technologies of critical raw materials in Hungary. The research work showed in this article, focused on the recovery of critical materials from LCD TVs and monitors. There are high deviations in different literatures regarding to concentrations of critical elements in displays (e.g.: indium), probably because of the differences in production year, producers and recovery technologies. During the research - described in this study - a well specified sample of quite large amount of displays had been used. The exact place and shape of the ITO (indium-tin oxide) layer were determined by SEM analysis. The applied preparation technology was developed based on the results of our investigations and by technologies found in the literature. The developed process accomplishes two main parts: the mechanical preparation (mainly the liberation of different display layers, removal of liquid crystal) and the acidic dissolution of indium."

"Mining operations are often located in remote arid environments with limited access to fresh water. Shortage of fresh water in such cases makes it necessary to use seawater in mineral processing plants. Such plants treating Cu- Mo sulfide ores in seawater have been fully operational in Chile (e.g. Las Luces, Centinela). In many cases process waters used in commercial flotation plants (e.g. Mt Keith in Western Australia) are even more concentrated electrolyte solutions than seawater. This paper is an attempt at classification of the flotation operations carried out in process waters that are concentrated electrolyte solutions.INTRODUCTIONAccording to Gleick (1966), of the total Earth’ water resources 97.5% is in the oceans and ice caps, and thus only about 2.5% is fresh water. Shortage of fresh water in many parts of the world makes it necessary to use seawater in mineral processing operations. The existing commercial operations using seawater as well as recent research projects that deal not only with sulfide ores but also with apatite ores provide a lot of information that can now be generalized. The progress that has been made in this area is reviewed and based on this information an attempt is being made at classifying the flotation operations carried out in highly concentrated electrolyte process waters.SALT FLOTATIONFlotation in highly concentrated electrolyte solutions was studied by Klassen (Klassen, 1963). He reported that hydrophobic, bituminous coals, could float in salt solutions without addition of any other flotation agents. The process is referred to as salt flotation. Other inherently hyhrophobic minerals (e.g. talc, graphite, sulfur, etc.) were shown to behave similarly (Klassen and Mokrousov, 1963)As Figure 1 shows, some coals float quite well in solutions of Na2SO4, NaCl and NaNO3 (Klassen, 1963). While there are differences between the tested salts (explained by different foamabilities of these solutions) all the tests indicate that only bituminous coals float well in concentrated electrolyte solutions. 0.3 M solutions are quite sufficient to initiate a good and very fast flotation. If wettability of various coals is compared it becomes obvious that these well floating coals are very hydrophobic bituminous coals (Figure 2)."

"Flotation processing of water-soluble minerals (potassium ores, sedimentary salts of salt lakes) is currently the main method for production of potassium fertilizers and concentrated carnallite which is the initial product for production of metallic magnesium. Flotation of sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl) is carried out in the electrolyte solutions: KCl-NaCl-H2O and KCl-NaCl-MgCl2-H2O. The report presents the results of studies of the effect of concentration and the electrolyte type on the size of air bubbles in a flotation cell in comparison with the floatability of mineral constituents of potash ores. The floatability in electrolytes of various compositions has been studied: - of sylvite (KCl) by alkylamines, - of halite (NaCl) by alkylmorpholines, - of silicate-carbonate slimes contained in the ore by ethoxylated surfactants. The reagent modes (regimes) activating the flotation desliming of potash ores have been developed."

Copper metal has important role in the basic industrials, as if it did not exist, modern human life would not develop! Copper leaching, as the first step, is important step in copper production processes. In this research, efficient factors on the leaching have been investigated. For this reason, four efficient factors on leaching namely pH, liquid to solid ratio (L/S), temperature and time, as independent variables, were optimized using response surface (RSM) with D-optimal. A quadratic equation was used to create response and contours. According to the results from analysis of variance (ANOVA), the value of determination coefficient (R2=96.77%) indicates that the model was good fit. Optimum experiment condition also was found: pH of 1, L/S of 8.24, temperature of 26.06 ? and time of 43.64 min. At this condition, the maximum recovery of copper was equaled to 92/38 in which good desirability achieved.

The phosphate ore sample was taken from the iron tailings after recovering most of magnetite by magnetic separation in Longlin, Yunnan Province of China. Batch flotation tests had been conducted to upgrade the phosphate concentrate by conventional fatty acids reagents under 70% -75 µm of the particle size; however, the unsatisfied results (P2O5 grade of 27.84% and recovery of 49.25%) were obtained. Also there are a large amount of slimes trapped in the concentrate and high-dosages consumption of reagents, for example, more than15 kg/t soda ash and 2 kg/t sodium silicate at only one-staged roughing. Based on the analysis of X-ray diffraction (XRD) for the sample, most of gangues are clay, quartz, and chlorite, which may easy to over-grind and deteriorate the flotation process either on reagents consumption or slurry fluidity or viscosity. A hydro-cyclone had been introduced to pre-concentrate the phosphate ore by scrubbing the slime before flotation, which can result obviously in reducing the dosages of soda ash from 15 Kg/t to 4 Kg/t, and raising the grade of P2O5 in the concentrate from 27.84% to 36.13% at the expense of about 4% recovery of P2O5. They also substantially reduced the time of sedimentation of concentrate after flotation from ~10 to ~1 min. In this paper, the effects on the recovery of P2O5 by the different dosages of flotation reagents with or without de-sliming were studied, with the objective of determining the different effects on the functions of flotation reagents by slime during flotation. "A novel technology was developed to study the process of recycling copper from waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs), which are the main source of metal production in the next decades. The chemical compositions of the WPCBs were investigated. The results indicated that the PCB powder was mainly composed of copper (38.5 wt.%), iron, aluminum, and non-metallic materials. Copper is mainly in the form of Cu and is the most valuable metal for the recycle of WPCBs. The concentrated WPCBs powder, obtained by the mechanical process, were pressed as the anode, which was directly electrolyzed to produce copper. The effects of H2SO4 concentration, Cu2+ concentration, current density, pole pitch, and liquid-to-solid ratio on the voltage, current efficiency, and copper extraction were investigated. The results indicated that the optimum conditions were liquid-to-solid ratio of 30 mL/g, current density of 571 A/m2, sulfuric acid concentration of 180 g/L, 50 g/L of copper ion, polar distance of 3 cm. Under the conditions, a desired current efficiency could be achieved. Meanwhile, about 95.62% Cu was recovered from the WPCBs. The experimental studies also revealed that the purity of copper obtained at the highest current efficiency was higher to 99.98%. Produced copper sheet were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD analysis indicated that the copper was the main phase. INTRODUCTION With the rapid development of electronic industry, more and more waste electronic and electrical equipments (WEEE) are generated every year (Fogarasi et al., 2012; Liang et al., 2013). The production of printed circuit boards (PCBs) is the base of electronic industry, because it is the essential part of all electrical and electronic equipments (Schlummer et al., 2007). As a result, a considerable amount of waste PCBs containing plenty of heavy metals have to be treated. In general, PCBs contain about 28% metals that are abundant non-ferrous metals such as Cu, Pb, and Sn. Printed circuit boards can be considered as a secondary resource for recycling rather than wasting. The contents of gold and silver respectively reach 80 g/t and 3300 g/t, which are much higher than that of primary ores. Copper is the main metal of PCB and its content is as high as 26.8% ( Zhang et al., 2009)."

In order to determine the optimal process parameters of agitation leaching and provide industrial process design parameters, experiments were carried out on leaching behaviors of copper oxide ore with high mud content. Condition tests show that the main factors affect the leaching efficiency as follows: Temperature, Initial acid concentration, leaching time and particle size. As the temperature increases, the copper leaching rate was increased. At 60 ?, the initial acid concentration 80g / L, leaching time 2h, liquid-solid ratio 2:1 and grinding fineness65%-0.074mm, the optimal copper extraction was 83.15%, the acid consumption was 187.91kg / t. ore. Electrochemical processes occur on nano-, micro- and macro- scale in numerous applications such as fuel cells, batteries, hydrogen production, mineral extraction, water treatment, electrotherapy, sensors and many others. In most of these applications, gases evolve either at one or both electrodes due to electrolysis. These gases form bubbles play a crucial role in electrochemical systems. For example, in electrowinning (EW) that is used to extract and refine metals such as Cu, Zn, Ni, Mn, and Cd from their solutions, in most cases the solution is acidic and oxidation of water molecules at the anode is the common counter reaction, which results in the liberation of oxygen bubbles. This generally requires a high overpotential and accounts for a considerable percentage of the energy consumed in metal EW electrolytic cells, apart from producing acid mist that is very corrosive for other cell equipment and building structures. The behaviour of bubbles in electrochemical systems is still a complex challenging topic which requires a better understanding of gas bubbles hydrodynamics and their interactions with electrode surface and bulk liquid, as well as between the bubbles themselves. The objective of the current paper is to briefly review the fundamental hydrodynamics of both gas bubbles on the electrode surface and gas bubbles interaction with the liquid bulk solution. The current work also investigates the impact of gas bubbling and some operating parameters in copper EW, such as current density (100-500 A/m2), temperature (25-75ºC), acidity (50-300 g/L) and a typical chemical mist suppressant (<50 ppm). The results clearly show that both suppressant and temperature reduced the overall surface tension of the solution. Also, chloride concentration and applied current improved electrolyte flow and copper quality at higher current densities. The current paper contributes to the development of mineral processing (specifically to copper hydrometallurgy), as it deals with fundamental hydrodynamics and interactions of gas bubbles that formed during copper EW and play a crucial role in copper electrochemical systems.

Fankou Lead-Zinc Mine produced pyrite concentrate (P.C.) from the zinc tailings by rougher and scavenger flotation before 2010, with the averaged S grade of 40.54% at recovery of 79.34% ( to the feed of S circuit). On the one hand, the economic value of P.C. increases with its purity, on the other hand, when the S grade of P.C. feed to sulfuric acid manufacturer is over 47%, the pyrite cinder can reach a high Fe grade of 62% which can be directly sold as iron concentrate. On this background, engineers in Fankou Mine set the P.C. with S grade of 47% as target. The direct way to reach that goal was to clean the rougher P.C.. Lots of cleaning flotation tests were conducted and the compromised strategy was to produce two ranks P.C. with the S grade of 47% and 38% at the recovery of 44.20% and 36.17%, respectively. The dual-product flowsheet was successfully industrialized in 2010. In order to further improve the quality of P.C., gravity separation was introduced into the flowsheet. The numerical simulation and separation tests were performed to evaluate the beneficiation and classification performance of hydrocyclone as it treated the rougher P.C.. It was shown that the underflow of hydrocyclone could addressed the S grade of 47%, and the finer size overflow could also be enriched to P.C. with S grade of 47% by flotation, due to the contained pyrite with well liberation. That is to say, with the ingenious addition of hydrocyclone to treat the rough P.C., single P.C. with S grade of 47% could be achieved. The new flotation-gravity separation flowsheet was commissioned to produce the high quality P.C. at the end of 2013. The averaged S grade is 47.20% at recovery of 82.26% in 2014. The two steps flowsheet improvement maximizes the enterprise benefits and leads to simple utilization of Fe in pyrite in downstream industry.

Russia is one of the largest manufacturers of potash fertilizers in the world. Processing of potash ores basically is carried out by a flotation way. Potash ores of the Verhnekamsky potash deposit contain sylvite (KCl), halite (NaCl) and water insoluble impurity (up to 8 %), presented silicate- carbonate minerals, easily slimed by ore crushing in rod mills. Ore of some deposit sites, developed by ?Uralkali? Co, contains a significant amount of a carnal-lite (KCl.MgCl2.6H2O). Work practice of flotation potash plants has shown, that increase of car-nallite content in ore leads to increase magnesium ion content in a circulated plant brine (saturated salt solution of potassium and sodium chlorides-sylvite brine) and to deterioration of indicators of ore processing. In the Paper we present results of researches of floatability of various size sylvite and influences silicate-carbonate slimes on sylvite flotation in brines with the various magnesium chloride content. It is established, that with increase magnesium chloride content in the brine mainly decreases the flotation of coarse sylvite and amplifies adverse effect of silicate-carbonate slimes on sylvite flotation. In this connection deterioration of potash ore flotation is caused not only decrease sylvite floatability but also strengthening adverse action of water insoluble impurity on potash flotation. It is shown that the application of frothing agents, which render the stronger dispersive action on the colloidal-micellar structures of amine in the salt solution increases the absorption of collector on the sylvite and improves the flotation of sylvite into magnesium the containing salt solutions. The application of an organic depressor to the greatest degree of decreasing the absorption amine on the slimes and to the smallest degree possessing anionic properties proves to be most effective with the flotation carnallite of the containing potassium ores. It is offered the application the frother on a basis of glycol ethers and organic depressor on a basis of urea-formaldehyde resin. Results of industrial tests developed reagent modes for flotation treatment of ores with the raised carnallite content (to 6 %) on ?Uralkali? Co plant have shown that their application has allowed to receive equivalent indicators potash flotations at change of magnesium chloride content in the brine from 0.7 % up to 2.4 % .

Gold and copper are lost in flotation tailings in mineral processing of copper-zinc-pyrite ores. Large resources of precious and base metals have accumulated in tailing ponds of Russian plants. Object of the study is the sample obtained from Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company in Russia. The main constituents in flotation tailings are Au, Ag, Cu and Zn with content 1.4 g/t, 12 g/t, 0.66 and 0.5% respectively. The flotation tailings are a refractory material. Gold, as main metal, is fine encapsulated in sulfides, mainly in pyrite. Gold extraction from tailings is 34.0 and 42.7% at P42 and P90 of 0.074mm particle size respectively. In this work heap bioleaching of tailings was studied for oxidation sulfides (pyrite and chalcopyrite) with using mesofilic and moderately termofilic bacteria in acidic solutions. The tailings had low filtration property (< 0.3 m/day) and pelletization was used before bioleaching. Copper containing converter slags flotation tailings and calcium oxide were used as binding material for increasing filtration property of tailings. Copper was extracted in sulfate solution and was precipitated by cementation after cleaning of bacterial solution from iron. Copper recovery was 56.8% at content 61.4% in precipitate. The biooxidation of pyrite was 80%. Cyanidation, leaching with thiourea and heap leaching by cyanide were tested too. Gold extraction from solid bioresidues was 82, 75.3 and 77% respectively. The results of this investigation were recommended for pilot test.

"A weathering-crust niobium-rare earth-bearing deposit is formed by the weathering alterationof alkaline granite, which is refractory due to its low grade and complex properties. The mineralogicalcomposition of ore, the grain size of majorminerals as well as the occurrence of Nb and REE are studied in this paper using MLA combined with traditional methods. According to the results, a wide range of Nb-Ti-REE compound minerals including titanoniobite, uranpyrochlore, chlopinite, samarskite and ilmenorutile areformed for the extensive isomorphous substitution among the elements of Nb, Ta, REE, Fe, Ti, U and Th. The occurrence of REE is extremely complex. First, the REEexistingas rare earth minerals including monazite, xenotime, bastnaesite,etcaccount for 21%. Second, the REEexist in the lattice of Nb and Zr minerals as isomorphous additions, which account for 18%. Third, the REE exist as colloidal rare earthdeposit,which account for 35%. Last, the REEexistingas ion-adsorption-type rare earth,which are adsorbedon the kaolinite in the form of hydrated hydroxyl ions, account for 26%.Based on the results of mineralogy, the combined technology process "mineral processing- hydrometallurgical separation" is needed to deal with the ore. The mineral processing tests show that, for the feed ore containing Nb2O5 0.065%, REO 0.13%, an Nb-REE concentrate containing Nb2O5 1.38%, REO 1.98% can be gained by "high intensity magnetic separation-regrinding-gravity separation by shaking tables". The recovery of Nb2O5 and REO is 62.42% and 44.78% respectively. The Nb-REE concentrate is dealt by the metallurgy process "direct reduction- acid leaching & acidulating- neutralization & precipitation- chlorination & distillation" and the rare earth oxide of 92.34% REO as well as the Nb-Zr oxide of 24.62% Nb2O5 can be obtained with the recovery of REO and Nb2O5 being 76.83% and 59.37% respectively."

The per capita energy consumption in India is 510kgoe/year, the global average being nearly 1818kgoe/year. Correspondingly low is the per capita CO2 emission at 1.25t against the world average of 4.39t.65-70%, at times more, of India?s power generation from about 190,000 MW installed capacity, is however coal fired.India therefore has to secure diversified sources of energy and solar power is increasingly being looked as the real alternative to the existing over dependence on coal. To ensure sustainable solar power it is essential to secure its raw material base that is ?silica?, hitherto considered as ?minor minerals?. That calls for immediately addressing the issues of land availability, solar power cost, developing a dynamic inventory of silica containing minerals, appropriate processing technology and strong regulatory framework for sustainable mining and processing of all silica rich minerals. "The Olserum deposit located in Sweden hosts an indicated mineral resource of 4.5 million tonnes over 0.6 % TREO, exhibiting a relatively high proportion of HREE. Beneficiation of a composite drill core sample was studied in the flowsheet of magnetic separation of magnetite followed by REE minerals flotation. Primary testwork was performed to select an effective REE mineral collector and then the parameters of grinding size, collector and depressant dosages, slurry pH and density, conditioning time and temperature, and flotation time were tested for optimization of REE flotation. The studies of process mineralogy showed that the REE-bearing minerals monazite, xenotime and apatite were successfully enriched from the concentrations of 0.6%, 0.31% and 2.6% in the feed to those of 17.0%, 8.9% and 65.0% in the concentrate with the recoveries of 79.0%, 81.3% and 71.0%, respectively. INTRODUCTION The Olserum deposit located in Sweden comprises lower grade placer material with higher grade apatite-magnetite veins and hosts an indicated mineral resource of 4.5 million tonnes at 0.6% TREO, with 34% of that being HREO (EURARE, 2017). The mineralization was studied by Andersson et al. (2018). At early stage, high-temperature REE is characterized by abundant monazite-(Ce) and xenotime-(Y) coexisting with fluorapatite and subordinate amounts of (Y,REE,U,Fe)-(Nb,Ta) oxides. During a subsequent stage, allanite-(Ce) and ferriallanite-(Ce) formed locally, partly resulting from the breakdown of primary monazite-(Ce). Alteration of allanite-(Ce) or ferriallanite-(Ce) to bastnäsite-(Ce) and minor synchysite-(Ce) at lower temperatures represents the latest stage of REE mineral formation. The mineralogy and beneficiation were firstly studied by GTK Mintec in the EURARE project for a composite drill core sample. The Olserum is considerably smaller than the Norra Kärr deposit. However, REE are hosted by xenotime and monazite, both of which have well established processing pathways, and meanwhile, the Olserum has a high contribution of the high value critical REE (dysprosium (Dy), yttrium (Y), neodymium (Nd) and terbium (Tb)), which provide a unique advantage for its exploration (Tasman Metals Ltd., 2013). One area in AG/SAG milling field which has received a great attention is the optimization of liner design for any application to increase the availability of mills. The Gol-E-Gohar iron ore concentration plant uses three 9m × 2.05m autogenous mills (AG) in parallel in a dry operation. The AG mill shell is lined with three series (57 cm each) of 36-row liners. Due to large variations in feed characteristics and inadequate blending, the performance of AG mills has been lower than the target value. Therefore, to improve the comminution efficiency, the optimization of the design of AG mill shell liners was applied in this plant. By simulation it was found that increasing the liner lifter face angle from 7 to 30° while maintaining the original lifter height (i.e., 22.5 cm) could provide an appropriate charge trajectory. Measurement of the wear profiles of shell liners indicated that the wear along the liner length was not uniform and the highest wear occurred between 0.5 m and 1.2 m of the mill length. A new liner design was proposed by redistributing the metal from parts with a lower wear rate to the parts with a higher wear rate to arrive at a uniform wear profile along the liner length at the liner removal time. The non-uniform shell liner was constructed and installed in one of the three parallel dry AG mills. It was found that the first and second liner designs increased the mill throughput by 2.6 and 7.5%, respectively. After conversion to SAG milling on the account of liner change, 18% (from 413 to 489 t/h) increase in throughput was realized. It was predicted that the non-uniform liner designs will increase the liner life time by 10% and will reduce the scrap metal from the current value of 59% to 50%.

"Coal-water mixtures (CWM) of concentrated fine coal may be transported in pipelines but this is influenced by both CWM rheology and stability. Here, a low viscosity is required to reduce power requirements, as well as good stability for transport and storage. The objectives of this study are to investigate the importance of surface charge, solids concentration and dispersant addition on the rheology and stability of a fine Witbank coal-water mixture (<75 m). Zeta potential, rheology and stability were measured with a Malvern Zetasizer, a AR1500EA rheometer and a static rod penetration test, respectively. Sendep 30D, Sendep 30F and Norilose 8058, all supplied by Senmin International, were used as dispersants, at dosages of between 0.1 to 0.5% dry coal (w/w). Solids concentration was varied from 10 to 58% (w/w). The zeta potential was found to be positive at low pH and decreased sharply with increasing pH to a minimum of -50 mV at pH 10. The zeta potential decreased with increasing dispersant concentration for all dispersants. The lowest zeta potential of -63 mV was obtained for Norilose 8058 at a dosage of 0.3%. CWM rheology was Newtonian at lower solids concentrations but became non-Newtonian at solids concentrations over 40% (w/w), with an initial yield stress and pseudo plastic behavior. The yield stress decreased sharply with increasing dispersant concentration for all dispersants. The lowest yield stress was obtained for Norilose 8058. The addition of dispersants resulted in significant improvements in stability. A penetration ratio of over 70% was obtained for Norilose 8058 after 10 days. In summary, the addition of dispersants resulted in a decrease in the zeta potential which increased the electrostatic repulsive forces between particles, thus improving both CWM rheology and static stability.INTRODUCTION Coal Water Mixtures South Africa’s energy economy depends heavily on coal. It accounts for about 70% of primary energy consumption, 93% of electricity generation and 30% of liquid petroleum fuels (Eberhard, 2011). The transportation of coal to export markets and power generation stations is a problem in the South African coal industry due to ageing and inefficient rail infrastructure. This problem is intensified by the long distance of coal haulage, delays in the time required to load and unload wagons, and environmental challenges related to air pollution and water contamination. Fine coal may be transported more efficiently and economically in a pipeline as a highly concentrated coal water mixture (CWM). Typically a fine coal CWM will contain 60-75% coal, 25-40% water and nearly 1% of dispersing additives (Atesok et al., 2005; Dincer et al., 2003). However, the transport of CWMs in pipelines is strongly influenced by both CWM rheology and stability. Here, a low viscosity is required to reduce power requirements, as well as good stability for transport and storage. These quantities are affected by the coal composition/mineralogy, solids concentration, particle size and size distribution, particle shape, inter-particle forces and dispersant type and dosage (Laskowski, 2001)."
