"The process of grinding in drum mills is directly dependent on the dynamic forces occuring in the free movement of the grinding bodies in the volume. The subject of discussion are the potential impacts between grinding bodies having different shape and equal weight in a drum mill that has a diameter of 1200 mm. The study utilised ball grinding bodies having a diameter of 120 mm and tetraballpebs having a conditional diameter of 120 mm. The study was carried out using the Solid Works Simulation software. The following cases were examined: • Impact between two identical grinding bodies; • Impact between a grinding body and the shell surface. The study provided numerical values for impact force, kinetic energy of impact, linear speed of impact, linear displacment of the center of gravity and duration of impact deformation. The impact force of the balls is approximately 179000 N. The impact force of the tetraballpebs with typical vertices, edges and spherical surfaces depending on the area of impact is 177000 to 185000 N. Upon impact between two spherical surfaces of tetraballpebs, the contact area is 263.55 mm2, which is more than twice the contact area upon impact between two balls, which is 114.39 mm2. This determines better conditions for the transmission of kinetic energy by reducing opportunities for overgrinding."

"The major losses of PGM and base metals in the beneficiation of platinum group deposits occur during the separation of gangue from the value minerals by selective flotation. A number of studies have shown that this negative impact on flotation is due to surface passivation, caused by various ions that may originate from the external water supply or, as is likely in the majority of cases, from the oxidation of the mineral surfaces and the grinding media. This investigation aimed at reducing surface passivation of pentlandite and inadvertent activation of pyroxene, thereby improving ultimate valuable mineral recovery and selectivity. Both synthetic minerals and plant ores were studied in order to determine the effect surface passivation and inadvertent activation have on mineral surface alteration and floatability. Zeta potential determinations, microflotation, ToF-SIMS (Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) analyses, laboratory batch flotation tests and continuous flotation testwork were used as tools to study the surface alteration and/or floatability.Zeta potential determinations and ToF-SIMS analyses showed that copper adsorption is non-selective. Both pentlandite and pyroxene become copper (II)-activated in the presence of copper sulphate and subsequently, in the presence of xanthate, adsorption of the collector will occur onto copper activated mineral surfaces. Zeta potential determinations also showed an alteration of the surface charge in the presence of polyphosphate, thereby inhibiting surface passivation of sulphides by slime coatings due to surface repulsion.The addition of diethylenetriamine (DETA) reduces the copper concentration on both minerals, predominantly on the pyroxene surfaces and polyphosphate further enhances the selectivity at pH 6.The microflotation and batch flotation data obtained has shown a significant improvement in the ultimate flotation response of valuable mineral recovery and concentrate grade compared to the standard reagent regime, while the continuous flotation results significantly improved the selectivity, however, at a similar ultimate recovery."

The study involved two projects that will produce copper concentrate and may have their operations integrated. Transport by trucks, conveyor belt, and the equipment called RopeCon were evaluated as options for the ore transport between the sites. A rainforest stretch, that Vale S.A. demands to preserve, is situated between the projects. It was suggested to further review RopeCon because it presents minimal interactions with the environment. To design the preliminary system layout, a research was done on the rainforest cover height data, but the information found was scarce and imprecise. For preserving the local forest, the use of this data would conduct to the oversizing of RopeCon towers and, consequently, overestimation of its costs. For the acquisition of reliable information, a method was developed using local data acquired through airborne laser survey. The volume between the digital surface and terrain models was calculated to generate a surface representing the forest cover height. It was revealed, by plotting the points obtained from this surface, that 85% of the vegetation is below 25 m. This height is suggested to review the preliminary project with a more accurate design of the equipment towers, thus reducing its costs estimates. The method permits the precise location of the large trees, making easier to find a pathway, for linear-shaped facilities, that would minimize the creation of vegetation-free zones as a measure to protect equipments against falling trees and forest fires. As the important potash, the product yield of KCl in winter is low and the resources waste is serious according to the deficiency of collectors, which can be used in this condition currently. This paper studied on the change of contact angle, turbidity, and flotation recovery of KCl particles when different chain lengths, ratios of amines were used as collectors in KCl flotation process to get a new mixed collector. The contact angle values of KCl crystal in its brine solution added different amine collectors were first measured by captive bubble method. The turbidity of brine solutions were then measured by the laboratory turbidimeter at room temperature when different amine collectors were contained. In the end micro-flotation experiment using mixed amine with fixed ratios and ODA as collectors respectively at 5 °C, 23 °C were performed. The results show when the ratio of the mixed amine is DDA- 20%, ODA-60%, C20-20%, the contact angle at KCl surface is the maximum and the hydrophobic state is best. Meanwhile the result of turbidity measurement indicates that the dispersion of mixed amine colloids is better than the ODA collector due to the addition of DDA, which plays the role of frother. The flotation results also prove that the mixed amine is not only fit for the KCl flotation at room temperature but also fit for its flotation at low temperature. This study provides strong technical support to extend the production time of potash business in Chaerhan areas in China.

Due to complex mineralogical and chemical interactions of the value and gangue mineral phases present in uranium-containing lateritic ores, deleterious pulp gelation which impacts on value metal recovery sometimes occur during atmospheric leaching. In this study, the leaching behavior and particle interactions of selected oxide (hematite, quartz) and clay minerals (muscovite, chlorite), which constitute predominant host gangue phases of typical lateritic uranium ores are investigated to provide basic, mechanistic understanding of temporal pulp gelation phenomenon. Isothermal, batch leaching with H2SO4 was carried out on concentrated dispersions (30 ? 57 wt.%) of single minerals at pH 1 and 25 or 70 °C and their concomitant solution, speciation and rheology (shear yield stress, viscosity) were characterized. It is clearly shown that despite the high oxide content of lateritic ores, the pulp chemistry and rheology is largely affected by the incongruent leaching behavior of more reactive, acid-consuming aluminosilicate clays. Furthermore, time- and temperature-dependent alumino-silicate species polycondensation interfacial reactions are shown to be responsible for the enhanced particle interactions, reflecting strong pulp rheology in agitation and pumping. If not properly mitigated, high pulp shear yield stress and viscosity have a striking impact on processability and hence, value metal recovery.

Three high-grade limestone ores (CaO content over than 53 %) with different geological origin have been characterized for the synthesis of aragonite precipitated calcium carbonate. Limestone ores examined in this study showed different crystal particle size that cause difference in disintegration degree and surface area of the synthesized slaked limes. The limestone ore with smaller crystal particle size showed higher disintegration degree and also yielded slaked lime with smaller surface area, which is good for the synthesis of aragonite precipitated calcium carbonate. The synthesis of aragonite PCC using the limestone with a small crystal particle size was yielded needle-shaped aragonite with the aspect ratio of about 14. Nowadays heap leaching has become established as a mineral processing technology for treatment of some low grade minerals such as copper, gold, and zinc, etc. Heap height, particle size, leach reagent consumption, and metal recovery are four important metallurgical parameters in a hydrometallurgical process like heap leaching. This paper investigated the effects of heap height and particle size on copper recovery as well as acid consumption. Three heap heights of 2, 4 and 6 meters and two particle size fractions of less than 25.4 mm and 50.8 mm were selected as variables in the experiments. The research results showed the inverse relation between heap height and copper recovery as well as acid consumption. Under given conditions, the copper recoveries of minus 25.4 mm ore are 78.63%, 66.27% and 52.88% higher than that of minus 50.8 mm samples for the heap heights of 2, 4, and 6 m, respectively. MIBC and sodium metasilicate are used as a frother and a dispersant in coal flotation respectively. In order to study interaction between them, flotation experiments were performed on fine coal (<150 microns). It was found that if the frother (MIBC) dosage is in excess of a certain limit, it has an activation effect on the gangue minerals associated with coal. In addition, it was found that however sodium metasilicate can disperse clay slimes eliminating slime coating, but in the case of excess dosage, could intensify activation effect of MIBC, which is undesirable in coal flotation. The production of minerals for human use at locations other than the Earth is expected to ?advance ? human prosperity in ? ways that [do] not compromise the potential prosperity and quality of life of future generations? (Brundtland, 1987); in other words, sustainably. This paper examines the interaction of extra-terrestrial mineral production (ETMP) with the following sustainability imperatives: ? The sustainability of human activities on Earth; ? The sustainability of human activities elsewhere; ? Human survival in general, the ultimate sustainability goal. Some of the consequences of mineral production on Earth are widely considered to decrease the future prosperity and quality of human life. Examples include noxious by-products or wastes and unsettling economic up- and downswings. Moving mineral production activities to extra-terrestrial locations, where appropriate, will decrease many of its deleterious effects. Terrestrial mineral production presently is decreasing in some countries and increasing in others, moving from the cheaper and easier ores to more expensive, difficult materials. When the full costs of maintaining the terrestrial environment in a sustainable manner are included, total mineral pro-duction costs must increase. The cost of extracting mineral products from extra-terrestrial sources will be substantially higher, especially in the initial phases, but as the full costs of terrestrial production increase, at some point in the future (different points for different minerals), the curves will cross (Fig.1). This will occur at different points for different materials, a process whose prediction will be complicated by substitution of cheaper materials for some uses as prices of the original material rise. In summary, mineral products from extra-terrestrial sources will tend to increase the sustainability of human civilization, once steady state has been reached.

"In Brazil, there are no official reserves of molybdenum, and the unofficial reserves are modest. Therefore, the molybdenum ore (molybdenite) produced as a co-product or by-product of emerald mining in the region of Campo Formoso, BA, has arisen as the only economic option. The flotation process is commonly used in Brazil for the recovery of molybdenite from emerald mining tailings, but it produces low-content molybdenite concentrates, thereby resulting in a product with low economic value. The molybdenite concentrate produced in Campo Formoso contains 83.5% MoS2 (50% Mo), which is less than the international standard product that contains > 90% MoS2 (54% Mo).This low value is due to the presence of talc, which is a naturally hydrophobic mineral that is also floated with the molybdenite during the flotation process. Separability studies were done in a Partridge-Smith cell using dextrin and quebracho as a molybdenite depressor in solution at different concentrations and pH values to produce a technical-grade concentrate (i.e., 90% MoS2). These basic studies were accompanied by measurements of the zeta potential and contact angle, which was determined by the capillary rise method. The results of these floatability studies were used in bench flotation tests, which were performed in a Denver laboratory flotation cell. A molybdenite concentrate of 93.4% MoS2 was obtained when dextrin was used at a concentration of 100 g/t."

Unknown and unpopular vibrational grinding mills possibilities to horizontal working chambers have been discussed. They can be realized under normal conditions with the typical values of vibrations applied with vibrational grinding which are: vibration frequency from 15 Hz to 50 Hz, vibration amplitude to 6 mm and vibration geometry. These possibilities constantly increase involving new raw materials and processes. Vibration grinding is possible with other technological process accompanied by intensified technological processing, while the process decreases. In many cases these technological decisions are original.

A moderate thermophilic microorganisms, has been isolated (45?) from a typical sulphide mine in the region of Mo Jiang located in the southwest of China. The culture has been used to extract copper from chalcopyrite concentrates obtained from De Xing copper mine. The majority of experiments were carried out in 300mL Erlenmeyer flasks containing 150mL volumes of mineral suspension. Effects of some variable parameters such as solids concentration, pH and the concentrations of inorganic nutrients on the bioleaching of chalcopyrite obtained from De Xing copper mine were investigated. For a given concentrate the most important factor affecting the fractional copper extraction was the size of the mineral particles. The overall rate of leaching was found to be limited by the area of mineral surface. The attack started in cracks and genetic defects and finally reached the whole chalcopyrite surface. As a consequence of this, the ore showed strongly cracks. The additive of ferrous sulfate increases the bacteria activity, but did not improve chalcopyrite bioleaching. The results indicate that the nature and relative proportions of the various minerals present have been shown to be important factors.

Effects of irregularity, rough surface and aggregation of fine particles on ultrasonic attenuation are significant. The effects should be considered while predicting particle size by ultrasonic attenuation technology. The scanning electron microscope micrographs analysis also shows that particles surface is rough and irregularity. Any slurries has its fractal structure and its special fractal scale and dimension, so, effects of irregularity, rough surface and aggregation of fine particles can be de-scribed by fractal model. The discrepancies between predictions of ultrasonic attenuation based on the assumption of smooth spherical particles and data obtained from slurries of irregular particles indicated that there were different fractal structures. The ultrasonic attenuation model was modified by fractal dimensions. The result of experimental data and analogue calculation indicated that pre-dictions of the fractal modification of ultrasonic attenuation model show good agreement with experimental data. On the other hand, from the values of fractal obtained by inversely calculation, the degree of effects of irregularity, rough surface and aggregation of particles can be estimated. The positive value of fractal dimension indicates that the aggregation has the dominant effect on ultra-sonic attenuation, otherwise, the irregularity and rough surface has the dominant effect.

The biological stage of reclamation is the third final stage in remediation the damaged mining terrains, which is carried out following the completion of the mining technical stage. The biological stage of reclamation is carried out through restoration of the vegetation layer. The biological reclamation includes all activities related to the introduction into the terrain of vegetation, microorganisms, insects, and animals, with the acceleration of the succession and creating conditions for a sustainable ecosystem close to the natural one. It comprises of all anti erosion and other activities such as the preparation of the land for growing agricultural crops, sowing grass seeds, planting seedlings, amelioration of the soil and further care for the vegetation until its final place on the land. Mineral and organic-mineral ameliorants for biological reclamation were studied. The basic mineral ameliorant is Bulgarian natural zeolites. The zeolitic-rich tuff samples provided from Golobradovo deposit was characterized by their chemical and mineralogical composition and ion exchange properties and X ray analysis. The average content of clinoptilolite was found to be more than 80%. The materials had ion exchange capacity (NH4+) varying from 100 to 110 meq/100g. Chemical modifications of natural clinoptilolites were made in order to form active phases of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and microelements. Slow-acting mineral ameliorant was developed. Organic-zeolite substrate for biological reclamation was developed. This new product is a mechanical mixture of organo-matter and modified zeolites. Agro-chemical parameters of new ameliorants were determined. The substrates including studied overburden dump soil and mineral or organo-mineral ameliorants are produced. "The main features of the de Wet improved alkali fusion process for the manufacture of AZST are: Fewer process are steps necessary; radioactivity is removed by leaching rather than by precipitation; fewer waste streams are generated; there is less waste to discard and alkali reagent is recovered in the form of a sodium silicate solution that is essentially free of radioactivity.Here we report on our efforts maximize the alkali recovery in the sodium silicate product stream: Milled zircon, d50 ˜ 9 µm, was fused with caustic soda pearls in open reaction vessels at temperatures between 650°C and 850°C. Fusion times of 1, 2, 4, 24 and 336 hours (with intermittent milling) were investigated. The fusion products were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and by wet chemical analysis.For prolonged fusion times the fusion products approached equilibrium compositions. However, the phases Na2ZrSiO5 and Na4Zr2Si3O12 observed at 850°C did not form at 650°C. Since these compounds do not hydrolyze in water they limit the recovery of alkali in the sodium silicate product stream. For 2-hour fusions a broad spectrum of non-equilibrium reaction-products, that are rich in sodium silicates, is formed."

Red mud is the major waste material produced during digestion of bauxite ores with caustic soda in alumina production following the Bayer?s process. Its disposal remains a worldwide issue in terms of environmental concerns. A lot of research and developmental activities are going on throughout the world to find effective utilization of red mud, which involves various product developments. At present, building materials, industries are fast growing industrial sector where the need of various raw materials is enormous. The use of red mud in building material production is one of the options for conservation of natural resources and reduction of environmental pollution. A cost-effective and energy efficient mineral cementation process has been developed at CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar for use of red mud in manufacture of building brick, block and aggregate. The red mud is an alkaline material, which contains both leachable and non-leachable soda along with different mineral constituents of alumina, iron and silica. The effort has been made to use the mineral constituents of red mud to develop cold setting building brick by mineral cementation process using a binder specially prepared from Portland Slag Cement, Lime, Gypsum and Alkali metal sulfates. The red mud has been used from 40 to 70% by weight along with fly ash and binder in development of cold setting building brick conforming to the specification of IS:12894:2002.

In this study, the authors investigated the capability of an acidic thiourea solution and silicon-organic polymers (PSTM-3c, PSTM-3T) as ion-exchange resins to recover of gold from gold-bearing ore concentrates. Firstly, elemental gold present in flotation concentrates was dissolved by leaching with a solution of nitric acid and thiourea under the optimized conditions. The best result on gold thiourea leaching was obtained under a nitric acid concentration of 2 N, thiourea concentration of 2 %, and oxidant (Fe2(SO4)3) concentration of 3 %, solid:liquid ratio (S:L) of 1:20, leaching time of 6 hours at 20 °C with a gold recovery of 93.7 % for a gold flotation (unroasted) concentrate. For the roasted gold concentrate, the dissolution of gold was 94.8% under the optimized leaching condition as nitric acid concentration of 0.5 N, thiourea concentration of 2 %, and the oxidant concentration of 1 %, S:L ratio of 1:10, leaching time of 4 hours at 50 °C. Secondly, a series of sorption tests was carried out on a pregnant leach solution containing gold complex Au[S=C(NH2)2]2+ using silicon-organic polymers (PSTM-3c and PSTM-3T), respectively. The effects of solution pH, adsorption time and temperature in the sorption process are also studied. As the results, the PSTM-3c and PSTM-3T polymers were adsorbed about 94.4 % and 95.1 % gold from the pregnant leach solutions under the optimum sorption conditions, respectively. It was found that the both PSTM-3c and PSTM-3T polymers were effective for the recovery of gold from the pregnant leach solution of thiourea. Adsorption activity of the PSTM-3c and PSTM-3T polymers was confirmed by new peaks near 1700 cm-1 in the FT-IR spectrum of the gold-adsorbed polymers, respectively.

"Recently, in order to extract metals, the industry is trying to process old metallurgical slag. The material requires very fine grinding that results in enhanced slime-formation. This in turn leads to problems in the course of the flotation process and to a loss of metal. In addition, it causes difficulties in the wastewater treatment aimed at water reuse. The aggregation and separation of the fine particles and their further subjecting to mineral processing would result in more efficient use of raw materials. Closing the water cycle also would be facilitated. The paper presents results from studying sixteen flocculation reagents, commercially available for treating municipal wastewater, including products based on nanotechnology, for their ability to rend the production wastewater in suitable for reuse in the flotation. It turned out that, from all studied reagents, the cationic C-587 is suitable for the purpose. Some of reagents were studied for their ability to flocculate selectively, in presence of coke fines, rich in copper fines which are produced at grinding of a slag from lead-zinc metallurgy. Most promising reagents are chosen, based on the chemical analysis of the flocculated materials. Open-cycle rough copper flotation experiments with the flocculated fines and recycled wastewater gave encouraging results."
