This paper describes results from small scale tests conducted to determine the distribution of impulse on target plates when subjected to loading due to the detonation of a buried mine. The tests were conducted with saturated sand, dry sand, and water as the loading media. Tests were conducted for flat plates and for plates with angled bottoms. Previous testing has shown that angled bottoms can reduce the total vertical impulse delivered to the vehicle significantly. Different stand off distances were investigated as well as loading of the targets both on center and off center. It is very important to know not only the total impulse delivered by a detonating charge but also how this impulse is distributed over the bottom of the vehicle. A complete understanding of specific impulse will permit those parts of the vehicle, taking the greatest amount of loading, to be sized properly. Experimental results were compared to analytical expressions provided by Westine and Tremblay.

Such is my case at a West Virginia coal mine where a mine manager was desperately seeking a way to eliminate coal damage on cast shots while maintaining cast percentage without the expensive process of secondary drilling. This paper will focus on how bottom hole air decking is solving the problem.

The interest of seismologists in mining explosions has increased substantially with the construction of the International Monitoring System (IMS). The IMS supports the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty by providing global data coverage from seismic, hydro acoustic, infrasonic, and radionuclide sensors that will detect a host of natural and man-made events at regional (<2000 km) distances. Ideally, the recorded data can be used to identify those events that have explosive characteristics and therefore might be clandestine nuclear tests. The regional observations assure the detection of mining explosions, and these must be properly identified to avoid false alarms of the monitoring system. Cooperation with the mining industry, including documentation of the firing programs, provides critical information necessary to characterize the seismograms.

Poor understanding of the basic principles and practices of the drilling and blasting science in Underground Development Mining has created significant costs to mining operations in many instances.

The Institute of Makers of Explosives (IME) began development of a Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) tool, IMESAFR (Institute of Makers of Explosives Safety Analysis for Risk), in 2005 as a technology transfer effort with the United States Department of Defense (US DoD). Version 2.0 of the software has been developed over the last two years and introduces many new features and upgrades. Key upgrades include a new map-based user interface, new debris density hazard models, a metric version, and additional user options referred to as “conservatism switches”.

Image-based rock fragmentation analysis methods have been applied by blast engineers to estimate rock size distribution for over 25 years. These methods utilize a wide range of image segmentation techniques, from manual to fully-automated, to delineate the edges of the rocks in the image. In most commercially available image-based rock fragmentation analysis systems, rock delineation results are converted to physical rock sizes by introducing one or more reference objects (e.g., basketballs or other objects with known geometry) to the scene as size-scaling references.

The use of military-type energetic materials in commercial explosive products is not a new concept. In the United States, the techniques for utilizing significant quantities of surplus military explosive materials by commercial explosive manufacturers dates back to the 1950’s. At times, explosive companies have found surplus military high explosives and propellant materials to be suitable ingredients for their commercial explosive products. The availability of these military-type energetic materials has varied over the past 50 years, as a function of the military’s strategic defense needs and the advances in modern weapon technology. For the most part, the commercial explosives industry has been able to implement methods for safely incorporating military-type high explosives and propellant materials, whenever these surplus materials become available. During the past 5-6 year period, a large amount of military-type energetic materials have once again become available for recycling into commercial explosives. This situation can be attributed to a number of factors, such as the political changes in Europe, the development of more sophisticated weapons systems, and the increased EPA pressures on the U.S. Department of Defense for disposing of surplus energetic materials. As in the past, U.S. commercial explosive manufacturers have made efforts to recycle these surplus materials into their explosive products. This paper describes some of the commercial explosive products that are currently on the U.S. market, which contain rocket and gun propellants as energetic ingredients. Some U.S. explosive companies, such as DYNO NOBEL, ORICA and Slurry Explosive Corporation, have been able to recycle significant quantities of surplus smokeless powder and composite propellants as energetic ingredients into their commercial Blasting Agents. The successes enjoyed by these companies have once again shown recycling into commercial explosive products to be an economically and environmentally sound method for disposing of surplus military-type energetic materials.

Kelly bar drilling and blasting is unique to Florida, the' Bahamas and other marine limestone areas in the world where blast holes are required but will not remain open for the loading of explosives. This type of rock formation usually yields 1.5 tons of recoverable rock compared to 2.2 tons per cubic yard for competent limestone. The loss of .7 tons per cubic yard is due to voids and sand in the formation. These deposits all contain water to the top of the blast holes which are collared only a few ft. above the ground water level. The working pit is a water filled lake which is excavated from the bank by draglines. These drills have been used in Florida for many years to depths of 65 ft or less.

Meramec Mining Company's Pea Ridge underground mine is presently involved in a large scale pillar recovery program and has made use of both rotary and down-the-hole drills for large diameter blastholes. Groups of pillars have been blasted with water gels in massive blasts which have broken in excess of one million tons of ore per blast. An outgrowth of the pillar recovery program is the combination of rotary and down-the-hole drills to develop vertical "raises" between mine levels. This paper outlines the Pea Ridge procedure for pillar blasting including the use of non-electric caps. Techniques and loading rates are discussed, and safeguards against blasting damage which were developed as a result of the program are presented.

The ability to manipulate the structure of liquid chemicals in an explosive is important in mining applications, where precision blasting is crucial for the safe, reliable, economical and eco-friendly extraction of ores. Static mixers allow explosives, emulsion-based in particular, to be custom-made as they offer precise and reproducible mixing without the need for moving mechanical parts. In this paper, we perform numerical simulations on the laminar mixing of two nitrate-based fluids in a Kenics static mixer unit for various mixer parameters. Two numerical methods were investigated in the study of the mixing pattern: solving the mass transfer equation and using particle tracking. The former introduces artificial numerical diffusion which can lead to spurious smearing of the component boundaries, a problem that can be avoided with the latter technique. We have also demonstrated that the particle tracing method is capable of qualitatively predicting the blending patterns under the conditions studied.

The era of non-electric systems as an initiating system has revolutionised the blasting world by introducing a very safe initiating system that is reliable, with initiation sequence possibilities that are superior to those of purely pyrotechnical or electric systems. Electronic initiation has brought with it accuracy, programming and controls that were lacking in the non-electric systems. However, it has also led to a certain degree of complexity, which works against user-friendliness, sometimes introducing a few constraints that are balancing out the intrinsic performance of electronic detonators. The introduction of a hybrid initiation system, Electronic and Non Electric, offers accuracy, and flexibility that were lacking in non-electric systems, whilst removing the inherent complexity of electronic systems. This paper endeavours to summarise the advantages and disadvantages of non-electric and electronic initiation systems that have been recorded after years of experience on site. The paper will then describe how a hybrid system only keeps the advantages whilst eradicating the disadvantages, via a case study.

The explosives industry is subject to the laws of multiple jurisdictions, which means that several regulatory agencies are responsible for governing different aspects of the commercial explosives industry. Among these regulators are the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) who implements codes that better ensure both occupational and public safety which is influenced by professional blasting projects and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), who enforces commercial explosives storage and security, among other responsibilities.

In the blasting industry, many different techniques are used to estimate and examine the effects of varying explosives and blast designs on the breakage of a rock mass. The overall objective is to find a cost-minimized blasting solution that also conforms to the legal and environmental concerns related to blasting. A major drawback to current blasting methods is the inability to account for "caprock," or a thick overlying layer found in sedimentary rocks that creates large amounts of oversize blasted material, especially on the top of a muck pile. This can lead to underestimating oversize in shots with massive top layers. A better fundamental understanding of blasting processes with caprock is required.

In densely populated cities such as Hong Kong, where unoccupied space is becoming more valuable as the population grows, city planners are more often looking to underground space to meet the increasing need for transportation and services. Given the dense population of people, amenities and high-rise buildings above or near such underground space, it is essential to minimise any disturbance and potential damage during construction. Hence, the excavation of hard rock to develop such underground space can be highly restricted, expensive and time consuming. This is the case for many of the tunnels currently being excavated by drill and blast directly underneath Hong Kong’s busiest business districts and most popular residential areas.

Despite its porous and lightweight characteristics, aluminum mesh is believed to have blast mitigation properties. The current use of the mesh includes fuel tanks for airplanes, boats, and fuel stations as well as light armored vehicles for the military. The mesh acts as an explosion suppressant by preventing fuel tanks from exploding when exposed to an ignition source. More recently, work has been performed to assess the ability of the mesh to mitigate blast pressures produced by high explosives.

With an increasing pressure to find efficiencies in the mining industry, operations are looking for continuous improvement tools to validate blasting procedures, a crucial and often overlooked area of the process. Using case studies completed at both small and large-scale mining operations, this technical paper proposes a practical methodology for pattern expansion studies, taking into account terrain parameters, rock quality and explosive strength. This technical paper will use a series of tools geared towards an economical continuous improvement procedure, using UAV particle size analysis to optimize blasting based on “generalized reduced gradient” for non-linear problems, with cost savings being the main objective. For the validation of this methodology, one scenario was created based on the operation’s budget: an economical continuous improvement plan that relied on manual data collection methods in order to baseline and optimize procedures.

In previous conferences the authors have reported on toxic fumes generated by the detonation of ANFO. The research reported here extends the earlier work to include an emulsion blasting agent and ANFO/emulsion blends. Explosive mixtures were shot in 4-inch Schedule 80 steel pipe (outer diameter 4.50 in (11.43 cm), inner diameter 3.83 in (9.72 cm)) in a chamber in the experimental mine at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL). Following each shot, the fumes in the chamber were analyzed using on-line instrumentation.

Blast vibration monitoring for buried pipelines is typically conducted at the ground surface with a shallowly buried geophone. In many jurisdictions across the U.S., blast-related vibration limits set for pipelines are dictated by surface measurements and do not consider the significant reduction of PPV amplitudes acting on the pipe at depth. On the 5 September 2014 a road train (tractor-trailer) with two trailers carrying ammonium nitrate was involved in a single vehicle accident on the Mitchell Highway, 30 kilometers (18 miles) south of Charleville in Central Queensland, Australia. The ammonium nitrate was being transported to a mine site for use as a blasting explosive. The truck came to rest in the creek bed adjacent to a road bridge and caught fire. The vehicle burnt for over one hour before the load of ammonium nitrate exploded. Miraculously there were no fatalities; however eight people nearby sustained injuries, some seriously. The road and rail bridge over Angellala Creek were destroyed and vehicles in the nearby vicinity were seriously damaged. The truck carrying the ammonium nitrate was completely destroyed with over 2500 pieces of debris scattered up to one thousand yards (one kilometer) from the blast site.
