Silica, the world's most abundant mineral compound, is composed of the two commonest elements - oxygen and silicon. In addition to being the life-giving constituent of the atmosphere and the major element in the waters of the earth, oxygen comprises almost half of all known terrestrial matter and occurs combined with most of the other ninety-odd elements in the solid crust of the earth; however, a large proportion of the oxygen is combined with silicon. Silicon is second only to oxygen in abundance in nature and constitutes more than one-fourth of all known terrestrial matter. Waste disposal schemes using spent shale in embankments require a thorough knowledge of its geotechnical engineering properties for environ-mentally safe disposal. In this context, the objective of this laboratory investigation was to determine the physical properties, geotechnical properties, and composition of spent oil shale retorted by the PARAHO and TOSCO processes. Physical properties consisted of mechanical analyses, Atterberg limits, and specific gravity determinations. Geotechnical engineering properties were determined by compaction, maximum-minimum density, unconfined compression, triaxial compression, permeability, direct shear, Ko, cyclic tri-axial, resonant column, and Los Angeles Abrasion tests. Petrographic, chemical, and scanning electron microscopy analyses were used to determine compositional features. Unprocessed shale is hard and durable and more properly described as a carbonate rock instead of shale. PARAHO is classified as a GP, while TOSCO classifies as an SM. PARAHO requires no moisture for compaction to maximum densities; however, TOSCO does. Retorting causes a loss in durability but creates self-cementing characteristics, which for PARAHO a 3-to 8-fold strength increase was observed, while for TOSCO the increase was 1.5 to 3 folds. The shear strength, compressibility, and dynamic properties of compacted PARAHO are comparable to those for sandy gravels. Compacted PARAHO is semipervious, while compacted TOSCO can be semipervious to impermeable.

We Americans fondly believe that ours is the greatest , most progressive and most civilized country in the world , but the cold statistical facts reveal that we apparently have little appreciation for the lives of those whose efforts of various kinds give us whatever greatness we have . The latest available statistics indicate that the annual death rate per 100,000 persons , from accidents is nearly 80 , or far higher than that of any other country in the world ; it is more than double the rate in Denmark , Belgium, Netherlands , France , Sweden , Italy , Ireland , Germany , Norway, and Austria; it is practically double the rate in England and Wales and in Japan , and is from 25 to 60 per cent higher than the corresponding rate in Scotland , New Zealand , Australia, Switzerland , and Canada . And added to this is the fact that of the main industries of the United States mining has by far the worst accident record , viewed from either the frequency or the severity basis . The National Safety Council's latest figures for 27 of the country's main industries give mining the highest or worst accident frequency rate, 74.43 in 1929 ; meat packing comes next with 55.94 , and construction third with 50.41 . In accident severity in 1929 mining also was the worst offender , with a rate of 9.99 ; quarrying is second with 6.11 , and construction third with 4.62 . Metal mining's frequency rate in 1929 was 52.16 , as against 69.25 for bituminous coal mining ,99.68 for anthracite mining, and 74.43 for the entire mining industry ; accident severity for metal mining in 1929 was 5.99 , as against 11.69 for bituminous coal mining , 10.87 for anthracite mining , and 9.99 for the mining industry as a whole . Although this figure indicated that metal mining is on a much safer plane than either bituminous or anthracite coal mining, the frequency rate of 52.16 for metal mining was higher in 1929 than the frequency rate of all but one of the other 26 industries about which data are available ; the metal mining severity rate of 5.99 , while much better

This study was undertaken to make a comparison between the cost of mining coal under roof bolt and under conventional timber methods of roof support. Studies were made at 14 mines in Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, and northern and southern West Virginia. At each mine data were obtained for sections of the mine where the physical conditions, mining equipment, and mining systems were similar. Coal, recognized as one of the basic industrial fuels, is very competitive with other fuels, and management, in order to protect and enlarge its market, must be continually alert to find more efficient methods of production. Continuous production of coal is desired by all operators but never obtained. In mechanized mining the performance and production vary with operating time, which can be interrupted by many variable factors, such as condition of the roof, method of roof support, condition of equipment, water, ventilation, power, transportation, efficiency of operating crew, and supervision.

This report describes the methods and results of field investigations conducted by the Bureau of Mines between December 1956 and December 1957 on seven deposits of nickel-cobalt-iron-bearing laterite and weathered serpentine near the west coast of Puerto Rico east and south of Mayaguez. These deposits were named, for purposes of identification, Guanajibo, Punta Guanajibo, Las Mesas, north and south deposits of the Rosario Southeast group, and the west and east deposits of the Maricao Southwest group. In addition, the lower 17 miles of the Guanajibo River Valley was tested at widely spaced intervals for possible concentrations of magnetite and chromite in the alluvial sands. The objective of the investigations was to appraise, by drilling and sampling, the two largest deposits--the Guanajibo and Las Mesas. Testing of the smaller deposits was much more restricted. Field investigations consisted of mapping, drilling with power auger, sampling drill-hole sections, and pre-paring samples for chemical analyses, mineralogical studies, and metallurgical tests. The work was financed jointly under a cooperative agreement by the Bureau of Mines and the Economic Development Administration, an agency of the Puerto Rican Commonwealth.

The use of inert gas systems to extinguish mine fires has been the subject of research for some time in the United States. In some European countries, it is an established practice. Tests were conducted with the CMI Inert Gas System (CMI), which is being used by the Polish mining industry. This system utilizes a modified jet aircraft engine and afterburner as a compact source of combustion products with a very low (less than one percent) oxygen content. Water injected into the combustion products stream provides evaporative cooling and forms a mist with a high cooling capacity. The CMI system was used under controlled conditions to extinguish coal pile fires at the U. S. Bureau of Mines Experimental Mine in Bruceton, Pennsylvania. The test results show that the CMI system can be used conveniently to extinguish fires quickly and to maintain an inert atmosphere in the fire zone to prevent re-ignition.

The emphasis is on the measurement procedure and the interpretation of the measurement rather than on the instrument itself.] The failure to properly sample for methane is a major contributing factor to methane explosion risk. Sampling errors are most likely to occur at mines or tunnels where the presence of methane is not suspected or during nonroutine tasks at mines or tunnels known to have gas. More specific information on methane sampling at continuous miner sections is in Chapter 3. Chapters 4 and 5 discuss sampling at longwall sections, and Chapter 14 discusses sampling at tunnels. METHANE DETECTORS FOR MINING Many models of gas detectors are available to measure methane concentrations, as well as most of the other contaminant gases found in mines and tunnels. An example is the iTX Multi-Gas Monitor, a portable gas detector available from Industrial Scientific Corp., Oakdale, PA. This handheld instrument measures several gases simultaneously. The cost (2004) ranges from $1,300 to $2,200, depending on the number of gases measured. Similar instruments are available from other manufacturers. Most methane detectors used in mining use a catalytic heat of combustion sensor to detect methane and other combustible gases. These have been proven through many years of reliable operation. The Bureau of Mines conducted research to provide technical information needed to devise waste management plans for the processing of manganese nodules. Studies included summary descriptions of Pacific manganese nodules, process options and flowsheets, methods for characterizing nodules and their tailings, and results of analyses of laboratory and pilot-plant generated tailings. This information is the result of a cooperative research effort of the Bureau of Mines and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), with NOAA providing funding and the Bureau conducting the research. A summary of the extensive literature review is provided for manganese nodule mineralogy, chemistry, processing techniques, and methods of analyses. Characterizations and analyses of laboratory-generated tailings and slags are given, as well as the results of the leaching studies on these waste materials. Leachability was determined by three standard leachate tests- the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) extraction procedure (EP) toxicity test, the American Society for Testing and Materials shake extraction test, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-EPA seawater elutriant test. While the wastes generated in the laboratory may not be entirely representative of those to be generated in full-scale plants, results of these studies provide a positive indication that commercial recovery of cobalt, copper, manganese, and nickel from manganese nodules would be environmentally acceptable.

The great demand for metallic aluminum for the prosecution of World War II caused the consumption of bauxite, the common ore of aluminum, to increase greatly. Prior to the war, the domestic deposits 'of bauxite, which occur chiefly in Arkansas and less extensively in Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi, supplied only: about 30 ,percent of the ore required for aluminum-metal production and approximately 40 percent of alumina for all purposes. Enemy activities during the war seriously interfered with shipment of bauxite from the normal peacetime source in Surinam, Netherlands Guiana, South America, and focused attention on the necessity for increasing production from known domestic deposits. Even in peacetime, the production of aluminum ore in the United States could not satisfy requirements. Field drilling and exploration by Bureau of Mines engineers resulted in the discovery of important tonnages of high-grade bauxite suitable for treatment by the conventional Bayer process, Although an ore containing approximately 55 percent Al2O3 and only 2 to 4 percent SiO2 is preferable, it was necessary to use ores containing up to 8 or 10 percent SiO2. Because of the lower recoveries of aluminum with increased silica content, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, through the Metals Reserve Company, established a base price of $4 for a 50-percent Al2O3 ore, containing 13-percent silica, with a premium or penalty of 14 cents for each percent of Al2O3 over or under 50; each percent of SiO2 under 13 was awarded a 20-cent premium, and each percent over 13 suffered a penalty of 43 cents; all prices were on the basis of 1 long ton of ore, dry basis.

As a result of this characteristic structure these reagents are more or less powerful frothers and emulsifiers. Ten the degree of hydrophile-lipaphile unbalance is sufficiently great and specific chemical factors are absent these compounds behave in flotation as noncollecting frothers insensitive to reason¬able changes of pH.

In conjunction with pilot steamflood tests in the Venango sands of Warren and Venango Counties, Pa., the Marx and Langenheim (4)3 calculations were adapted and programed for digital computer solution to predict test performance. The Monte Carlo technique was incorporated in the calculations to provide values of several variables which could not be adequately defined from available information. The computation methods are explained and the FORTRAN IV program listing is presented. Data and results of the prediction calculations for Venango oil sands are also shown.

This report summarizes the findings of a 9-yr research program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and conducted by the Bureau of Mines, to evaluate refractory liner materials for coal gasifier reactors. Commercially available refractories were exposed to coal gasifier reactor environments, reproduced in the laboratory with a high-temperature, high-pressure test facility, followed by extensive postexposure evaluation. Thirty-six castable or gunnable refractories and cements and 24 refractory brick were evaluated. The behavior of castable refractories reinforced with stainless steel fibers was also examined. Gas environments that were evaluated included steam, H2, CO2, CO, and typical high-and low-Btu gas mixtures. Exposure pressures ranged from 100 to 1,000 psig, temperatures from 5000 to 1,1000 C, for periods from 50 h to 2,000 h. In some exposures, sodium and/or potassium hydroxide were introduced in order to simulate a high-alkali environment. It was found that intermediate-and low-alumina refractories produced from domestically available raw materials, rather than high-alumina refractories produced from imported raw materials, gave the best service as liner materials and that alkali attack was probably not a serious problem with most refractories. Based on the results of this program, good choices of refractory liner materials for gasifier reactors can be made.

This paper describes the sinking and lining of a 14 foot 6 inch finished diameter shaft down to and into the salt of a typical dome of the Gulf States region. The conditions and nature of the strata encountered divide the work into three distinct sections - that in (1) alluvial surface deposits, sunk through by open caisson methods, (2) water bearing rock, directly above the salt, and in (3) salt. The investigation of major and minor coal-mine disasters has been a routine function of the Bureau of Mines since its inception in 1910, and the facts obtained during such investigations have been used as a basis for determining the precautions that the managements and employees of many mines are observing to forestall similar occurrences. The Bureau has conducted research on roof-control and other mine problems, but a comprehensive study of other fatal accidents was not attempted until February 10, 1950, when the policy of investigating all coal-mine fatalities in the United States was approved by Bureau of Mines Director James Boyd. The investigations are being conducted by Federal coal mine inspectors functioning under the provisions of the Coal Mine Inspection and Investigation Act of May, 1941, Public Law 49; and reports covering the investigations are distributed to management, the State mine-inspection agency, and representatives of the mine workers' organization have jurisdiction at the mine.

Coking time was investigated as a function of coal properties, carbonization parameters, and the interactions between these variables. The results indicate that coal properties and carbonization conditions interact to influence the coking time, and these interactions may be determined quantitatively. Prediction equations were developed and used to simulate the effects of bulk density, flue temperature, and oven width on coking times for coals having a wide range of properties. The data presented provide additional information on the carbonization process to permit the coke oven operator to maintain closer control of coke production and coke uniformity.
