The quantity of explosives sold in the United States in January, 1931, for domestic consumption, amounted to 368,100 kegs (9,202,500 pounds) of black blasting powder, 4,610;000 pounds of permissible explosives, and 16,533,000 pounds of high explosives 'other than permissible. These figures are based on reports received by the United States Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, from nearly all manufacturing companies, and include an estimate of sales by several companies that do not furnish monthly reports. Reports actually received from manufacturers showed soles of 365,977 kegs of black blasting powder (consisting of 220,892 kegs of granular powder and 145,085 kegs of pellet powder), 4,687,900 pounds of permissible explosives, and 15,496,152 pounds of high explosives other than permissible. Sales in January, 1931, were smaller than in January, last year, the decreases being 14 per cent for black blasting powder, 19 per cent for permissibles, and 17 percent for high explosives other than permissible. Sales in January 1931 when compared with soles in December 1930, show increases for all three classes of explosives as follows: 2 per cent for black blasting powder, 16 per cent for permissible explosives, and 7 per cent for other high explosives.

In this Bureau of Mines study, sealants containing mineral wool, cement, etc, were sprayed through dry-process equipment that propels dry material pneumatically to the water-adding nozzle. Advantages over slurry applications include no mixing, no extensive cleanup, and freedom from hardened cement in equipment should power be lost. Sealants with large mineral wool nodules (>l-inch) were sprayable at rates to 900 square feet per hour for 1/2-inch thickness with little dust and smooth material flow through equipment, but they were weak for mine use, Materials containing small wool nodules (1/4-inch) were stronger but tended to plug lines because the nodules were inadequately separated in the shredder. Increasing the dedusting oil also increased line plugging by holding the nodules together in larger lumps. Best results were obtained using a 3/4-inch-nodule wool with cement binder, which provided both smooth flow through the machine and adequate strength.

An active list of permissible explosives was published in December 1936 as part of Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3324, under the title "Active List of Permissible Explosives and Blasting Devices Approved Prior to July 31, 1936." This list included 170 brand names. Changes in the list that have been authorized to June 30, 1937 placed 35 additional brands of permissible explosives on the active permissible list as a result of tests, changes in brand names, or transfer from the inactive list. Ten permissible explosives were transferred from the active to the inactive list. The present list contains 196 brand names, one explosive having been placed on the list subsequent to June 30, 1937. Knowledge of the types of naturally occurring sulfur compounds in petroleum is of both theoretical and practical interest to petroleum chemists and geologists. This knowledge has been extended by the identification of 77 sulfur compounds, including 36 thiols, 23 chain sulfides, and 18 cyclic sulfides in a 111° to 150° C boiling range distillate of Wasson, Texas, crude oil. The characterization procedure used in separating and identifying these compounds included isothermal distillation, vacuum fractionation, liquid-solid chromatography (alumina adsorption), chemical treatment, gas-liquid chromatography, microdesulfurization, and infrared analysis. The procedural steps described represent a systematic method of sulfur compound analysis considered applicable for determining the nature and concentration of the sulfur constituents present in any straight-run petroleum distillate of the above-boiling range.

Mine safety personnel reported occurrences of excessive "glove-fingering" and other problems with resin-grouted roof bolt installa tions. To study these problems, the Bureau of Mines designed a test plan to (1) obtain baseline information on several resin cartridges and (2) investigate the variables involved in the installation of a resin bolt. Three brands of resin representative of the industry in January 1983 were selected for cartridge evaluation. The installation variables selected for study were the method of installation, the hole depth, and the hole annulus. These variables were studied by installing a series of bolts in concrete blocks using different values for each variable. Results of the research show overspinning the resin may cause problems, but they can be avoided by using the spin times recommended by manufac-turers. Excessive glove-fingering is not a problem if the manufacturer-recommended installation procedures are followed.

An investigation is made of the feasibility of developing compact transmit antennas and/or other means to efficiently couple VLF to MF band radio energy between portable wireless communication units in coal mines. The completely wireless communication ranges between two portable radios equipped with practically-sized reference loop antennas in representative coal mine environments are estimated. Antenna technology is assessed with respect to transmit moment, range, intrinsic safety, battery and wearability requirements to deter- mine the most suitable antenna types for use by miners. It is concluded that air-core bandolier loop antennas, and perhaps ferrite-loaded loop antennas, having peak transmit moments of about 2.5 ampere-m5 will be the most effective antenna choices for portable units. This choice, however, will not allow the range goal of 1350 feet to be attained in mines having unfavorable signal attenuation and noise environments. Rectangular air-core loops are compared with grounded horizontal-wire and vertical-wire mode exciters for fixed station applications. The potential for significantly increasing the wireless communication range by inductively coupling to communications and power lines in a mine is evaluated and found to be considerable based on theoretical coupling equations. Lastly, the theoretical performance of a hybrid noise cancelling diversity receiving technique that utilizes both the electric and magnetic field components of the ambient noise to improve the receiver output signal-to-noise ratio under certain adverse conditions is estimated and shown to be favorable when the magnetic and electric field noise components are highly correlated.

[The temperature dependency of the low-density thermal conductivity coefficients, ?°T, of nitrogen, 100° to 1,200° K, is correlated with the Keyes' equation, ?T ½ -1 -12/T) WT = aT+ bT 10 The equation ?T,P = ?°T +a[ ]ß represented 509 experimental higher V pressure thermal conductivities in the temperature range 131.2° to 973.15° K for pressures to 500 atmospheres, with a mean absolute deviation of 2.35 percent. This equation was used to compute thermal conductivities of gaseous nitrogen for 47 pressures, 1 to 240 atmospheres, and 110 temperatures, 133° to 740° K, which are common to conditions encountered in Bureau of Mines helium purification processes. Isobaric heat capacities, CP, and viscosities, ?T,P, from previous work were combined with the present thermal conductivities, ?T,P, to compute Prandl1 numbers, C?T P / ?T ,P, of nitrogen. Tabular values of Prandtl num¬bers are presented for 49 pressures, 1 to 240 atmospheres, and 75 temperatures, 133° to 740° K. Estimated uncertainties are ±5 percent in the tabulated thermal conductivities and ±15 percent for the computed Prandtl numbers. However, the uncertainty may rise to ±10 percent for thermal conductivities and to ±30 percent for Prandtl numbers as the critical conditions of nitrogen are approached.]

The objective of this Bureau of Mines research was to compare the size distribution of respirable quartz collected at coal mines with that of several reference standards used to quantify quartz in coal mine dust samples. Particle size measurements were made on 23 samples and 4 ref-erence standards using a scanning electron microscope in the backscatter electron mode of operation, interfaced with an image analysis system. The Mine Safety and Health Administration provided the 23 respirable coal mine dust samples, which were collected at surface and underground coal mines in 7 States. The accumulated particle size measurements in-dicate three of the reference standards, minus 5-um Min-U-Sil, minus 5-um Supersil, and NBS 1878, would be preferred over the fourth, Silver Bond B, for quantitative quartz determinations in coal mine dusts by X-ray diffraction and infrared spectrometry.

This report is the fifth in a series presenting equilibrium vapor - liquid data for helium- bearing natural gases . It covers a 0.41 - mole - percent - helium natural gas that may be processed in the Department of the Interior's longrange helium conservation program . A Bureau of Mines phase equilibrium apparatus was used to obtain 139 samples of equilibrium vapor and liquid phases at 85 experimental conditions at temperatures from 0 ° to -299 ° F and at pressures from 100 to 500 psia . An appendix covers phase data at 100 , 200 , and 300 psia and at temperatures from -125 ° to -275 ° F for the dehydrated gas containing its original concentration ( 0.2 mole - percent ) of carbon dioxide , and the effect of a preliminary hydrocarbon trap upon subsequent vapor - liquid compositions .

"IntroductionThe way in which the particle sizes distribute in the airborne coal dust plays an important role in the transportation of the dust in the mine air and human respiratory systems. Though the particles of a size less than 10 microns could be inhaled, the real distractive portion of the dust is that the sizes range from 1 to 5 microns since only they can reach the lungs and be retained there. Those with an equivalent diameter larger than 5 microns will settle on the membranes of the branchial tubes(1) while those with diameter less than 1 micron can either be exhaled out of the lungs or the settled quantity is so insignificant that does very little harm to the lungs. In the transportation process, the finer dust will fly farther away from the sources than the coarser ones. Thus once the fine dust is generated and becomes airborne, it will spread out to a larger area.In this paper, the coal samples collected from two longwall faces were analyzed statistically for size distribu¬tion. A mathematical model is proposed and the effects of different conditions on the dust size distribution were analyzed using the mathematical model.Sampling and Statistical AnalysesSampling Instrument and ProcedureThe instrument used in the sampling were Mine Safety Appliance (MSA) personal sampling units equipped with 10-mm nylon cyclones, pre-weighed MSA PVC filters and constant-flow pumps.Two longwall operating faces were selected for the dust sampling. The two faces were located in two coal mines ex-tracting Pittsburgh seam. The double-ended ranging-drum shearer applying the unidirectional cutting sequence was employed. The two-leg shield supports were used for face support. The width of the two faces was about 215 meters.In each of the two faces, four sampling stations were set up. The stations were located at the cross-cut immediately outby the headentry side, the 15th support (25 m), 65th support (107 m) and 111th support (182 m) from headentry T-junction, and numbered as #1, #2, #3, and #4 station, respectively (Figure 1). At each sampling station, a group of three sampling units was hung at proper position. At cross¬cut (#1) station, the units were hung about one foot under the roofline in the center of the cut (Figure 2a), and at the stations in the face, the units were position near the hydraulic legs and one foot below the support canopy (Figure 2b).One complete set of 12 samples was collected for each day. The sampling were performed for five consecutive days. All the samplings were conducted in the morning shifts. The time duration of the sampling for each day was about five hours. During that time, the shearer might complete 5 to 7 mining cycles."

This Bureau of Mines report presents a method for the computer solution of the equilibrium compositions of any complex, multiphase, chemical system for which appropriate thermodynamic data are available. The method describes in detail the computation of systems in which solid or liquid species can form by heterogeneous chemical reactions where these species do not occur in any equilibrium equations. Also described are the calculation of phases formed by condensation (pure or solutions) and the inclusion of other system restrictions such as electroneutrality. The method is being used to compute the equilibrium composition of mixtures of an electrically conductive plasma and a liquid slag phase arising from the high-temperature combustion of coal for magnetohydrodynamic power generation. These mixtures can contain up to 65 species including gases, liquids, free electrons, and ions.

The Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States and Alaska since 1939. During the fall of 1942, the Bureau of Mines put down nine diamond-drill holes at the Cape Rosier zinc-copper-lead mine in Hancock County, Maine, that aggregated 2,883 feet of bore. These holes supplemented 13 holes, aggregating. 5,501 feet, put down on the property about 2 years earlier by the St. Joseph Lead Co. Veins of mixed sulfides were intersected in 15 of the holes drilled. Beneficiation tests were made on samples of ore obtained from old dumps. Zinc-copper-lead sulfides occur at the Cape Rosier mine as lenses in a zone of altered agglomerate beneath and between a series of diorite sills. The mineralized zone strikes F. 17° E. and dips southeast. Between July 1881 and September 1883 the mine produced about 10,000 tons of ore reported to have contained 20 percent zinc, 2.8 percent copper, and some lead. The crude ore was hand-sorted, and some. 3,000 tons were reported shipped.

This document reports the results of a two-year research effort aimed at improving communication systems used in coal mines. This work was conducted under a program whose original goal not only involved the development of practical and effective electronic systems for operational communications, but also for monitoring, at a central location, remote instruments at key positions in a mine. About half way through the originally proposed three year effort, the program was redirected to phase out the communication effort at the end of two years and to concentrate the program" resources on the investigation of new monitoring system concepts developed by this research. Thus, the work reported here is incomplete relative to the originally pro- posed program. However, the work was carried to the point of providing sufficient evidence to aid in the comparison of certain new communication concepts. For the concepts chosen for this study, the work was stopped short of hardware development and field testing, Several reports in the form of Master's theses and a Doctoral Dissertation have resulted from this research. They each report in considerable detail the results of several individual" contributions to this program. In preparing this report, an attempt has been made to provide a complete description of the significant results but with- out burdening the reader with the minute details. These more detailed reports are referenced heavily for the convenience of those interested. PRESENT COMMUNICATION METHODS Two types of communication systems are presently used In coal mines. They are: 1, Various forms of telephone systems, and 2. Carrier current radio systems using the trolley line as the interconnection circuit. Carrier current radio is used almost exclusively for control of rail trafflc by the dispatcher. Almost all other communication uses the telephone system, Telephone lines generally extend to areas where trolley lines are not present such as the outside offices and warehouse. Therefore the telephone system provides the primary means of voice communication. Telephones - Telephone systems employed in American coal mines fall into three categories. 1. Paging type telephone systems - these systems have individual stations which use battery powered transistor audio amplifiers to boost signal levels for normal communication. When in the page mode,

The carnotite deposits of western Colorado and adjacent sections of Utah and Arizona were formerly an important source of radium and uranium until displaced by the exploitation of foreign deposits in the Congo and northern Canada . Recently interest has been renewed in domestic carnotite ores as a source of vanadium . Carnotite is a canary - yellow, crystalline , pulverulent mineral occurring in sandstones in the Colorado - Utah district as an incrustation on the faces of joints and fractures and deposited around and between individual sand grains , often strongly adhering to the surface of the grains . Chemically, it is a variable combination of potassium, uranium , and vanadium oxides with water of crystallization . It is soft and friable , and occurs in fine - grained or earthy form . In spite of a specific gravity of 4.1 , gravity concentration has not proved practical as a means of beneficiation because of the earthy texture of the mineral . Vanadiferous sandstones occur with minerals ranging from roscoelite (vanadium mica) , containing little uranium , to high- uranium and low -vanadium carnotite . There is considerable local variation in the texture of the ores . The treatment of carnotite ores has been described previously , with attention directed to the elimination of waste in mining and the extraction of radium . The suggested methods included those suitable for the recovery of vanadium , since both radium and vanadium occur in the same minerals . Moore and Kithil suggested crushing from 40- to 80 - mesh with rolls , accompanied by a rubbing action to loosen the carnotite adhering to the sand grains . The U.S. economy boomed in 1965, completing its fifth consecutive year of expansion. Although the advance was somewhat irregular, previous records for production, sales, employment, and income were topped. During the first few months of 1965, as the economy recovered from the depressing effects of the automobile strikes of late 1964, increases were unusually large. The gains moderated in early spring, but were stimulated at midyear by sharply rising capital outlays, excise tax cuts, in? creased Social Security payments, and accelerated Viet-Nam defense expenditures. Gross national product (GNP) in cur-rent dollars rose $49.5 billion or 7.8 percent, to a total of S681.2 billion. In constant dollars (effects of price changes eliminated), GNP increased 5.9 percent, a rate considerably higher than the historical postwar annual average growth of 3.5 per-cent. Demand increased in most final markets and was especially strong for business fixed investment and consumption expenditures. With the exception of construction, most of the increases in GNP were real, since prices increased less than 2 percent.

The first paper, reporting data relative to gravity, vapor pressure, and distillation range of the samples, was published as Report of Investigations 3129. The second report dealt with the data of the twenty-third survey in accordance with the revised specifications for United States Government Motor Gasoline. These data were published as Report of Investigations 3142.

The first paper, reporting data relative to gravity, vapor pressure, and distillation range of the samples, was published as Report of Investigations 3129.7 The second report dealt with the data of the twenty-third survey in accordance with the revised specifications for United States Government Motor Gasoline. These data were published as Report of Investigations 3142.8
