At the request of several Federal agencies, tests were conducted on a relatively recent type of anthracite -burning equipment named the Anthratube. This device, rated at 130,000 B.t .u. per hour, was designed to burn Pea-size anthracite automatically for steam or hot-water house heating and for domes-tic hot -water supply. The polynomial method for estimating virial coefficients from experimental data suffers from three serious defects: (1) There is no known relationship between the polynomial coefficients and the virial coefficients, (2) the values of the estimates depend upon the degree of the polynomial and the particular set of values used for the independent variable, as well as the random errors in the dependent variable, and (3) the variances calculated for the estimates do not represent the mean square errors of estimation. Attempts to overcome these defects have thus far been unsuccessful; these attempts have also failed to account for the fact that none of the virial coefficients are uniquely determined by the values of the dependent variable for a finite set of values of the independent variable. The conclusion is that virial coefficients cannot be reliably estimated from experimental data unless additional information about the virial expansion itself, such as its rate of convergence, is available.

This report describes the development, oil recovery, and potentialities of productive formations in the Hall-Gurney field, Russell County, Kans. It is presented as part of a general program to aid and promote increased recovery from petroleum reservoirs. The report is based on studies of well logs, drill cuttings, and oil-and water-production histories of individual wells and leases. The geological interpretations follow closely those in published literature with only slight local modifications. Oil and water analyses, made at a Bureau of Mines research center, were supplemented by many analyses obtained from oil-producing and service companies. The Hall-Gurney field, in south central Russell County, Kans., (fig. 1) was discovered in 1931 but was not developed extensively until 1941. By 1960 the rate of oil production from the field had declined to the extent that many wells were abandoned. In some areas natural productive forces have effected good recovery. However, in other areas inefficient waterflooding, both natural and accidental, has adversely affected recovery potentialities.

Primary, low-temperature tars are generally known to alter with time. The effect is believed to occur, in some instances, without the external influence of air, light, or heat. Since one of the processes occurring during extended storage is oxidation, the action of mild oxidation induced by air and heat, in addition to the effect of storage, was studied. The principal effect in aging and oxidation is formation of pitch at the expense of the distillate fraction. The fraction boiling above 270° C. is mainly involved in pitch formation due to storage, whereas all fractions are affected to some degree when tar is heated at 125° C. in the presence of air. If the effects of air are considered, the aromatic and tar-acid fractions seem to be important in pitch formation.

In recent years various modifications in the methods of blasting have been tried as a means of increasing the production of cod and of reducing mining costs. Following an investigation by the Bureau or Mines, authorization was granted to increase the charger limit for permissible explosives par shot hole from 1.5 to 3 pounds under contain conditions; this greatly facilitates the blasting of coal in some cool fields the practice has gradually evolved of simultaneously charging several shot holes in a face and then firing the charges singly without inspecting for gas after each blast. This practice is disapproved by the Bureau of Mines. In other coal mines the explosive chews in several adjacent shot holes are fired simultaneously. This form of shooting is claimed to increase the rate of production, generate smaller volumes of noxious gases, promote the health and safety of workers by eliminating the need of inspection of the face after each charge is fired, produce less float dust, and require less explosive than single shooting. However, simultaneous blasting may have a more harmful effect on the immediate roof strata; in some instances it leads to wedging of the broken coal, thereby making the coal more difficult to load out; it makes misfired shots more difficult to detect and possibly increases the chances of misfires. This lacy be duo to variations in the characteristics of detonators, because of more stringent requirements for adequate firing current, to the need for better electrical connections in the shot-firing circuit, and partly to the inadequacy of present permissible multiple blasting devices.

"Although the advantages of large-capacity air receivers for underground mines are plainly evident from published information about various installations in the United States and abroad, details of their construction are not generally known in this country., Ordinary present-day air-compressor installations servicing mining machines are designed to supply air at a specified pressure in sufficient quantity to meet the peak demand of the mine,2/ although this demand may exist for only a few minutes out of 24 hours and, as usually happens, eventually exceeds the capacity of the compressor. Most of the receivers provided with these compressors (to a certain degree of standardi¬zation) are capable of storing a volume of air approximately equal to that compressed in 1 minute by the machine.3, 4/ As a result, during peak-load periods the compressor operates at full load capacity without maintaining kick-off pressure. At other periods of the work cycle, production of compressed air is intermittent.At least one large mine5/ has adopted large-capacity receivers to reduce wear on its air-compressing system caused by the sudden demand of peak loads. Under the old system, the compressors jumped suddenly from half speed to full speed; boilers furnishing steam to the compressors were taxed heavily to provide the increased requirements of power; and machines using the air, among which were four large hoists, were required to operate at 65 pounds per square inch rather than at the 90 pounds per square inch for which the compressors were regulated. Operation of air machines, especially drills, at pressures lower than those for which they were designed decreases their efficiency and increases maintenance costs. In addition, air that comes directly from the compressors has had little opportunity to cool and dry enroute.6./ As a result, quantities of compressor lubricant and water are carried into the machines that use the air. When expansion occurs in the cylinder or turbine of such engines, the temperature of the air drops, and this oil and water is precipitated. The water washes away lubricating oils in the machine, causing poor performance and high cost of maintenance; the compressor oil, in addition to being a poor lubricant for compresed-air engines, exerts a corrosive action on gaskets and rubber hoses.7/Reduction of peak demands on air compressors by large receivers lowers power costs by establishing more nearly constant load factors,8/ and in some cases by permitting the use of smaller compressor capacity.8,9/Load factor is the ratio of average demand to maximum demand; a low load factor costs money.10/Elimination of high-peak demands raises the load factor by making the average and the maximum demand more nearly equal. Further savings may be made possible by large receivers where their use permits charging to be done at night in regions having lower power rates during that period.11/Where ordinary receivers are used, compressor breakdowns cause immediate work stoppages in the mine owing to lack of air. Similarly, the capacity of a large receiver has been known to permit uninterrupted work in the mine until the compressors have been returned to service.9/Large-capacity receivers, either steel-tank or underground rock-chamber, offer a practical solution of many existing problems by providing a sufficient reserve of compressed air within the pressure range required for efficient operation of machines to level off peak demands on the compressor. The com¬pressors operate when the demand has reduced the pressure in the receiver below the regulating pressure and until all air used from the receiver has been replaced. It has been found possible in at least two mines,8.9/ one of which the author has visited, to entirely eliminate one compressor and to obtain more efficient performance from the remaining one by the construction of an underground coal-chamber receiver.8/"

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay mining, crushing and grinding methods, and costs, at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The, cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may in many instances cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation shall ensue. The following report deals specifically with the methods employed by the Evans Pipe Co., Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Electrowinning molybdenum from oxide feed materials dissolved in a variety of molten baths was investigated . A NaCl - NaF - Na₂ B₁ O -Mo0, system operating at 1,000 ° C in a cell without a protective atmosphere gave the best current efficiency , metal - to - cathode adherence , and purity of electrowon Technical - grade molybdic oxide , containing associated impurities of aluminum , iron , copper , silicon , and tungsten in combined quantities of 10 percent , was used as feed material to produce dendritic crystals of molybdenum metal containing less than 0.5 percent total base metal , carbon , and oxygen impurities . Arc - melting molybdenum electrowon from either chemically pure or commercial - grade Mo0, produced ingots that contained less than 0.1 percent total impurities and had hardness readings of 168 to 200 Vhn .

This Volume documents the use of the Cone Penetrometer data analysis computer programs VERT and HORZ. The programs are interactive in that they prompt the user for input data and allow correction and modification to be made. The programs read data from the results of cone penetrometer soundings and convert the data to values of tan ø. Mean, standard deviation, skew, kurtosis, linear trends and autocorralation are computed by the programs.

A reduction roasting/magnetic separation/flotation process for beneficiating oxidized taconite from the western Mesabi iron range in Minnesota was evaluated in a Bureau of Mines research program to insure an adequate supply of raw materials for future ironmaking and steelmaking needs. The research was performed on a sample containing 35.4 pct iron and representing a deposit of approximately 2 billion tons of raw materials. An average of 1,419 lb of oxidized taconite and 37 lb of lignite reluctant per hour were fed to a 35 -foot rotary kiln in which the iron oxides were converted to artificial magnetite. The kiln was heated with pulverized lignite and natural gas. Most of the dust collected from the kiln exhaust gas was pelletized and recycled to the kiln. Magnetic separation and cationic flotation of the roasted material in a 900-lb/hr pilot plant produced a concentrate analyzing 67.9 pct iron and 4.9 pct silica and containing 69.2 pct of the iron in the kiln feed.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines currently is researching the relationship between the level of back strength and the probability of low-back injury. This report is a review of the literature and statistics on over-exertion injuries. Overexertion continues to be a significant source of injury in metal and nonmetal mining, accounting for approximately 24 pct of all injuries yearly. These injuries, particularly to the lower back, can be very expensive in human and monetary terms. An examination of the accident data on overexertion injuries is necessary to provide a background for research into prevention and/or amelioration of those in-juries. The job categories outlined in the Accident Data Analysis data base most affected are "Mechanic/Electrician" and "Mill/Plant Worker." The age group most affected is "30-39" years, and the experience group most affected is "0-.99" years. The most prevalent type of overexertion injury is "Strain/Sprain," and the trunk is the body part most often involved in an overexertion injury.

As part of the Demand Evaluation Program of the Bureau of Mines to determine future needs for minerals, a study was instituted to develop and describe a methodology for approaching the problem of substitution between mineral commodities and between mineral commodities and other materials. The report comprises three sections: A review of general factors relative to substitution, a case study of the effect of substitution on zinc die-casting markets in recent years, and a general methodology for reviewing materials substitution with specific emphasis derived from reviewing substitution in the domestic zinc die-casting markets.

The annual survey of the oven-coke industry by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, described in this report shows that 79 plants were operating in 22 States December 31, 1956. On that date 15,923 serviceable ovens existed, with a maximum total annual coke capacity of 79,965,100 net tons, and 631 new ovens were under construction. Their annual coke capacity was 3,307,300 net tons. The number of serviceable ovens in existence relates only to those capable of producing coke and does not include (1) any ovens that were blanked off or retired permanently in batteries that were operating December 31, 1956, and (2) ovens that had been demolished and were being rebuilt on that date. For this reason, the number of ovens at furnace plants reported by the Bureau of Mines at the end of each calendar year differs from the number reported for the same group by the American Iron & Steel Institute, as the institute includes ovens being rebuilt.

"INTRODUCTION An extensive test program is in progress by the Bureau of Mines to determine ways and means of recovering ferromanganese-grade ore 6/ from the wide-spread domestic manganese and manganiforous iron deposits. Samples for testing were received from the Interstate Manganese Co. in northeastern Tennessee, 11 miles west of Mountain City and 10 miles southwest of Damascus Va. The ore deposit occurs in the residual material of the Shady dolomite 7/ as an unconsolidated mixture of hard and soft manganese oxides and clay.Numerous tunnels and pits have developed a large reserve of ore in an area of about 15 acres. One pit 250 by 50 by 20 feet is being mined by rower shovels. The ore is hauled to a washing plant for log-washing, hand-sorting, and jigging. Elastic-plastic finite-element simulation of cut-and-fill stoping in deep, narrow veins shows substantial quantitative agreement with field measurements of stope closure and fill pressure made at two mines in the Coeur d'Alene mining district of northern Idaho. The simulation procedure, validated by field data, was used in an analytical study of vein-wall closure and sill-pillar stress as influenced by fill modulus, rock modulus, and premining stress. Ratios of closure and pillar stress in the filled stopes to closure and pillar stress in the unfilled stopes are used as prediction indices for fill performance. In general, the support capability of fill increases dramatically as the ratio of fill modulus to rock modulus approaches 1. A significant reduction in closure .from the open stope--up to 75 percent--occurs with a relatively low-quality 10-ksi-modulus fill (rock modulus of 1,000 ksi). However, a higher quality fill is needed to achieve a substantial reduction in pillar stress from that of the open stope. A 100-ksi-modulus fill reduces pillar stress in both the 36-foot and l6-foot pillars (vein width is 10 feet) by about 50 percent relative to the open stope.

The effect of vacuum melting on the elimination of gases and nonmetallic inclusions for six low-alloy steels was investigated. The purpose of these studies was the analysis and comparison of differences in gas content and inclusions in air-melted and vacuum-melted steel. Data obtained from melts of 1-1/4 to 20 pounds indicate that vacuum melting decreases the number and size of nonmetallic inclusions and at the same time increases the degree of dispersion of the remaining inclusions. These improvements are undoubtedly related to the elimination of approximately 80 percent of the nitrogen and 90 percent of the oxygen as well as most of the undesirable metallic trace impurities.

This paper, which describes mining methods and practices at the Hurricane Creek bauxite mine of Reynolds Mining Corp. in central Arkansas, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The Hurricane Creek mine is in sec. 12, T. 2 S., R. 14 W., and sees. 7 and 18, T. 2 S., R. 13 W., Saline County, Ark., about 4 miles east of Bauxite. (See fig. 1.) Bauxite has been mined underground at the Hurricane Creek property since 1942. The operation is notable for relatively high recovery of bauxite under the adverse conditions of unconsolidated water-bearing overburden and unstable clay floor. Controlled caving, timbered stope walls, and efficient drainage systems on the surface and underground have minimized the problems and raised ore recovery about 25 percent above that formerly obtained.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines estimates the identified helium resources of the United States at 630 Bcf as of December 31, 1990. This includes 295 Bcf of demonstrated reserves, 87 Bcf of demonstrated marginal reserves, and 42 Bcf of demonstrated subeconomic resources. The identified resources include 161 Bcf of helium in inferred and marginal reserves and 45 Bcf in inferred subeconomic resources. The identified helium resources contained on Federal lands are approximately 170 Bcf, including 32 Bcf in underground storage in the Cliffside Gasfield near Amarillo, TX. In addition to the identified helium resources, undiscovered helium resources in the United States are estimated at a most likely volume of 103 Bcf, with a maximum volume of 259 Bcf and a minimum volume of 41 Bcf. Also reported are 43 Bcf of helium in nonconventional and low-helium-content natural gases. Current extraction of helium in the United States occurs mostly from natural gases produced from the Hugoton gas area in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, and the Riley Ridge area in southwest Wyoming. Helium extracted from natural gas in the United States in 1990 was 2.5 Bef. If current trends continue, some shortfalls in helium supply may occur in about 5 to 10 years.

Many mines rely on toxic gas sensors to help maintain a safe and healthy work environment. This report describes a prototype monitoring system developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) that uses light to power and communicate with several remote toxic gas sensors. The design is based on state-of-the-art optical-to-electrical power converters, solid-state diode lasers, and fiber optics. This design overcomes several problems associated with conventional wire-based systems by providing complete electrical isolation between the remote sensors and the central monitor. The prototype performed well during a 2-week field trial in the USBM Pittsburgh Research Center Safety Research Coal Mine.
