Of three known compounds in the ternary system K20 - PbO - SiO2, one having the composition K2Pb4Si8021 crystallizes into a structure with asbestiform properties. This compound, whose silicon-oxygen ratio is between that of the layer silicates (for example, mica) and the double-chain amphiboles, crystallizes in the tetragonal system. It malts, apparently congruently, at 779° C. The fiberized product prepared from crystals is fluffy and closely resembles natural asbestos in appearance, but is more brittle and has less strength. However, potassium-lead silicate may be separated into fibers with a uniform diameter of 200-300 A.U., and the fibers show with the electron microscope the s criteria that have been interpreted as indicating a hollow tube structure in chrysotile asbestos. Since very few inorganic crystalline compounds have such a structure, the material has unusual scientific interest. Microcrystalline potassium-lead silicate was rapidly and completely formed when powdered glass of the same composition was heated to 650° - 700° C, but macrocrystals grew only slowly from the viscous massive glass. Maximum growth rate was 0.12mm. per hour at 700° C.

The Kline tract ?3.nd the Frey tract are two separate properties situated in the Wentworth district on the easterly edge of the Tri-State zinc-lead region (fig. 1). The Kline tract is in the southwestern corner of Lawrence County, Mo., and the Frey tract, 1 1/2 miles west of the Kline, is in the northeastern part of Newton County, Mo. A bureau Of Mines drilling project embraced work on both properties, but the amount of work done on the Frey tract was comparatively small. At the time of the project the Kline tract was under lease to the Wentworth Mining & Milling Co. The Surprise Mining Co. held the lease on the Frey tract. Underground workings on the generally flat-bedded are deposits of the Kline property-covered an area of-about 15 acres. No total metal-production records are available. In 1942-1943 the mine, operated by the Wentworth Mining & Milling Co., produced at an average monthly rate of 83 tons of 60-percent zinc concentrate derived from mining and milling 1,700 to 2,100 tons of ore. At the end of that period no significant amount of reserve ore was in sight. The gravity-flotation mill on the property was operating at about one-sixth capacity.

The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal in the United States suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known (measured plus indicated) recoverable reserves of all coking coals; (2) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation; and (3) to study the carbonizing properties of coals and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke making. This is the fourth of a series of reports giving the results of studies by counties under phase (1) of the investigation. It covers Armstrong County, Pa., which comprises parts of the Foxburg, Clarion, Brookville, Kittanning, Bural Valley, Smicksburg, Freeport, Elders Ridge, and Indiana quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A base map for each bed in each quadrangle was made to the scale of 1 inch equals 1,200 feet. Maps of mines, locations of drill holes, bed and total coal thicknesses, and the outcrop of the bed were plotted on the maps. With all available data plotted, isopach lines were drawn to limit areas of known unmined reserves in beds 0 to 14 inches thick, 14 to 28 inches thick, 28 to 42 inches thick, and more than 42 inches thick. These areas of coal reserves also were divided into "measured" and "indicated" categories. All areas in each thickness range and in each category, mined-out areas, areas excluded from the estimate, and areas outside the outcrop were measured by planimeter on the base maps, Estimates of total reserves 14 inches and more thick and maps for individual beds were prepared from these data.

The Malheur-Jordan Resource Areas (MJRA?s) is a tract of approximately 6.5 million acres of federal and non-federal land in the southeast corner of Oregon. This study evaluated the Resource Areas' economically recoverable mineral potential based on geological estimates provided in the USGS report (Smith, 1994). The mineral terranes are believed by geologists to contain undiscovered resources. The geological data is probabilistic; with estimates of the possible number of deposits and their grades and tonnages. Possible future development scenarios range from no development to numerous mines. Based on the analysis performed on these terranes, the most likely (in a statistical sense) future scenario for the resource areas would include the potential for two medium sized, predominately gold, mines. These would supply direct and indirect employment of up to about a thousand workers.

The methods used and the funds available for the development and oper- ation of shall mines and the reopening of small abandoned mines frequently present problems that tax the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the mining engineer far beyond that required in the mass production from large deposits. The objective of this paper is to describe in considerable detail the means whereby engineers have solved local problems in reopening an abandoned mine at which equipment, facilities, and funds were limited... The Etowah Coal & Iron Co. Gadsden red-iron-ore mine at Gadsden, Ala., 18 of interest in this category since it is the only independent red-ore mine under active development in the State. All other red-ore mines in Alabama are owned or controlled by the large iron or steel companies. The The mine, located on the southwest end of Shinbone Ridge in the outskirts of Gadsden lies in an ares once productive. but now idle, for many years. ore is relatively highgrade compared with that in the Birmingham area, but the bed is thin and somewhat lenticular. The presence of a large blast furnace at Alabama City, 3 miles from Gadsden, and the growing scarcity of red-iron ore supplies for it offered inducements for reopening the mine in 1946. Up to the time this circular was prepared (1947) only a small quantity of ore (about 1,500 tons) has been produced and shipped to the furnace. A force of 14 men was employed in sinking the main slope and developing a third "lift" (a local term for level) 100 feet below the old mine workings.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been investigating methods and technology that may improve safety and production when applied to existing mining machines. Toward those goals, the Bureau has developed navigation systems that provide machine positional information while in the production area. This research has been limited in the past because the Bureau had only one type of mining machine to do experiments. Addressing this problem, the Bureau, along with Carnegie Mellon University, has developed a generic vehicle emulator, in the form of a wheeled vehicle with an onboard computer, known as the Locomotion Emulator, that provides a software-selectable vehicle emulation package. Preliminary testing by the Bureau has shown that the emulator can accurately imitate the maneuvers of the software selected vehicle type. Now the Bureau can test their navigation systems on different vehicle types without having to procure each of the vehicles. This report completely describes the emulator as well as all the modes in which it can be operated.

Industry must be made to realize that "Safety First" means just that - safety first. The miner must realize that safety first takes precedence over earnings. The employer must realize that safety is the first consideration, and is not to be subordinated to profit-making. Neither employee nor employer is justified in adopting the principle of safety first with reservations; that is they will practice safety first only so long as they think that it does not interfere with earnings or profits. This paper proposes to demonstrate that suberdinating safety to possible profit is short-sighted and that over an ex- tended period of time it dres not result in increased profits or earnings. An employee through disregard of safe practice may receive an injury that will cause him a loss of earnings if, indeed, he is net killed or permanently in- capacitated. If permanently incapacitated any compensation he may receive is very likely to be wholly inadequate as compared with probable earnings if the accident had not cccurred. The employer, upon his part, will find that the burden of compensating his injured employse will far exceed the outlay of money necessary to maintain a reasonable program of safety in his mine or plant. The mine foreman is one of the most important factors in the matter of mine safety. A vigilant and competent mine foreman, once he has established the confidence of the employees in his ability as a foreman, can be of invalu- able assistance in promoting mine safety, for through him and his assistants the employees may be made to cooperate. Every employer should remember, then, that the soluction of the foremen and their assistants is one of the most important matters connected with the work of establishing the maximum amount of safety in his mine. Everyone connected with the mining industry must be made to realize that there is to be no back-sliding and no let-up in safety work; that no matter how dry and tedious the routine may seem it is absolutely essential and justi- fied for both humanitarian and economical reasons. Efficient safety effort pays dividends in actual cash to both employer and employee. About 50 per cent of underground accidents in coal mines take place at the working face where the miners dig and load the coal. Approximately 17 per cent of coal-mine fatal accidents are the result of underground haulage. Face and haulage accidents can and will be reduced materially if the individual miner takes all precautions necessary to protect himself and if the management

The Bureau of Mines, as part of a program to improve mine planning and development, is currently investigating the effects of pillar load transfer, which can impact mining operations within a multiple-seam configuration. A comparative study was performed at two separate mine sites. The objective of this study was to compare two mines, each affected by this pillar load transfer mechanism, and to show how this interaction affected underground workings by the installing and monitoring underground instrumentation. At mine site A where the overburden was 1,000 ft, the innerburden thickness was less than a pillar width (40 to 45 ft), overlays of the mine layout show pillars were not superpositioned, excessive roof to floor convergence was measured, and pressure readings indicated pillar core loading only. At mine site B, the overburden was approximately 555 ft, the innerburden thickness was approximately 105 ft, overlays of the mine layout show pillars were superpositioned, minimal roof to floor convergence was measured, and pressure readings indicated a skin loading only.

"SUMMARYThe Ione-Carbondale clays area is 2 miles northwesterly of Ione, Amador County, Calif. It was explored during the war by the Bureau of Mines to obtain data on the alumina content and to recover representative samples for beneficiation tests for alumina recovery.Seventy holes, aggregating 8,837 feet, were drilled, and about 10.3 acres of land was cleared of underbrush. Maps and cross sections were compiled showing location of holes, analyses, and other pertinent data.The clay beds vary in thickness from 13 to 196 feet, and are covered by a loose overburden, averaging about 11.9 feet in thickness. The ratio of overburden to clay is 1 : 8.2. Analysis of a composite sample showed the recoverable alumina (A12O3) and Fe2O3 content to be in the order of 23.6 percent and 2.8 percent, respectively.Topography of the clay area is ideal for open-pit mining methods and plant site.INTRODUCTIONInvestigation of alumina-rich clays for the possible production of aluminum was made during the recent war period, when the shortage of bauxite was becoming critical.Results of field examinations by the Bureau of Mines and the Federal Geological Survey indicated that one of the most promising areas for the development of alumina-rich clays is in the Ione-Carbondale district."

"This study by the Federal Bureau of Mines was confined to pillaring with continuous mining machines and to mines where total extraction is practiced. Many different conditions and practices in as many coalbeds as possible in Pennsylvania were observed.Pillar extraction or pillaring can be the most productive part of coal mining if done properly; but it also can be the most dangerous if done improperly.Because of the need for more careful planning before and caution during pillaring, many mining companies resort to the undesirable practice of stumping or hogging of pillars with subsequent unnecessary waste of valuable natural resources. Pillaring can be done at reasonable cost and safely, as proven at many mines where complete extraction is practiced and enviable cost and accident records are maintained.Although continuous mining machines are bulky and sometimes difficult to maneuver, they have been used with great success in pillaring. Occasionally, however, a machine is caught, or men are injured by a fall during pillar recovery. This Bureau survey was conducted to ascertain how safe and successful pillaring (especially the removal of final stumps in lifts or the final stump of a pillar), is accomplished in some mines, while others have considerable difficulty under similar conditions.The Bureau hopes the information to be presented in this publication will prove beneficial to those who wish to recover more pillar coal and to improve their accident record during such procedures."

It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts prelimi¬nary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, Oliver C. Ralston, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests.The project was under the immediate supervision of Mitchell H. Kline, chief, Raleigh Division, Mining Branch.LOCATIONThe Chesapeake Corp. deposit is reached from West Point, Va., by driving west on State Route 33 to the junction of State Route 634, approximately 5 miles. Proceed southeast along State Route 634 about three-quarters of a mile, at which point an old longing road turns north along a ridge and leads to the marl outcrops about one-half mile distant. The Philbates property lies three-quarters of a mile farther west along State Route 33 from the junction with State Route 634. The property lies north of State Route 33 and east of State Route 623 (fig. 1). The marl deposits are on the north end of the farm. The Chesapeake Corp. tract comprises 174 acres and the Philbato property 58 acres."

A study was made by the Bureau of Mines of the penetration of selected granular materials in an unconfined state by wedge-shaped tools having dimensions comparable with the dimensions of the particles composing the materials. The output force for larger particles fluctuated radically. A custom-designed integrator was used to obtain work as a function of depth of penetration in the form of smooth curves. The influence of wedge angle, depth of penetration, penetration rate, entry angle, compaction state, and particle size on the force required and the work performed was ascertained. Empirical equations describing force and work as a function of penetration were obtained for each set of experiments.

The gold that is not recovered by a particular process is refractory to that process. A study to determine how the refractory gold is associated in the ore constituents usually indicates the needed improvement in the process or additional methods for bettering recovery. In preliminary work, segregation of the various minerals, gangue or impurities, and data showing the reactions of each in the recovery method readily confines the refractory gold to a certain part on which extensive research can be directed. In this dissecting plan, the microscope is an important aid in locating the refractory gold but should be supplemented by chemical tests. Each ore is an individual problem until the association of the gold has been determined. Knowing the problem through the interfering minerals or elements, the solution often is only the application of part of a former known practice as an auxiliary or additional feature. In the treatment plan for most gold ores, it has been the custom to try each of the usual recovery methods or combinations thereof, accepting the best results on a basis of the lowest cost. A better plan includes knowledge of the association of the gold and the various minerals from which it is to be recovered. This presents reasonable foresight into the problems that should be expected and permits some provision for avoiding probable difficulties. The preliminary work should include: Determination of the percentage of free gold with classification showing size of gold particles to be expected; determination of the percentage of gold associated with each mineral and whether it be freed from the mineral by crushing; and an analysis of representative samples of the ore to include other valuable minerals and the form in which they occur.

"INTRODUCTION The investigation of the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes owned by the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. and the study of methods for eliminating these hazards, conducted by the Bureau of Mines, the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston, and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co. since 1929, was continued during 1933.From May and through December 1933 these tests were supplemented by a study of the manholes of the New England Telephone & Telegraph Co. The test crew was under the direct supervision of John Campbell, superintendent of the Special Service Department of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., and F. M. Goodwin, vice president of the Boston Consol¬idated Gas Co.The procedure of sampling manhole atmospheres and of shipping the samples to Pittsburgh was the same as that used heretofore. In previous reports the relative explosibility of the samples was calculated by adding the percentages of the illuminants, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, methane, and ethane, dividing the total by 6.5, and multiplying by 100. Experience has shown that the factor 6.0 is more nearly correct; therefore, this has been used in calculating the relative explosibility of all the samples listed in appendix A and B of this report. If gasoline vapor is present a smaller factor must be used.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe cooperative investigation was arranged through the interest and effort of W. C. A computer program has been devised to calculate the reservoir performance of water floods of complicated well - spacing patterns . The method and program have been tested by calculating the waterflood performance of fivespot patterns using oils of different viscosities and the performance calculations agreed closely with laboratory results . The program on a high - speed digital computer will process the performance prediction in about 1 minute , which is very rapid for a prediction using so much fluid mechanics and nonlinear geometry . The program has been presented in such a way that one may use it as given and save the time required to write and " debug " one of his own . gram processes a complex reservoir analysis , many of the complicated steps are explained in detail , both for the fluid mechanics and the directions for the computer . The subtle features that originally delayed the application of the program to unusual combinations of permeability and viscosity relationships are incorporated and explained

In this report the need to improve protection against power system faults is documented, and types of faults are identified. "INTRODUCTION Molybdenite, the only common mineral and ore of molybdenum, occurs wide¬-spread but is concentrated as the main ore mineral in commercial quantities in only a few known deposits. Consequently, the Government sought additional sources of the minerals as a precaution against the possible shortage of moylbdenm for war uses. Upon request by the War Production Board, the New Year’s Eve and Esperanza properties of the Amargosa Molybdenum & Copper Corp. were investigated by the Geological Survey 3/ and the bureau of Mines 4/. The Survey appraised the mineral potentialities of the deposit and prepared topographic and geologic maps, and the Bureau made a preliminary engineering examination. The deposits were previously examined by W. J. Vanderwilt, consulting engineer. It was largely due to his recommendations that interest was stimulated in the deposits.Development on the New Year’s Eve deposit indicated a small tonnage of sub marginal ore. There was little development at the Esperanza, but surface examination revealed a large volume of rock containing a little molybdenite and a trace of copper in the oxidized outcrops. Some molybdic oxide was noted suggesting that some molybdenite might have been leached from the oxidized outcrops and that the molybdenite content in the sulfide zone might be higher."

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindablity index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions3 issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor; if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in the coal.

This report covers Westmoreland County, Pa., which comprises parts of New Kensington, Freeport, Elders Ridge, Pittsburgh, Greensburg, Latrobe, New Florence, Johnstown, Brownsville, Connellsville, Donegal, and Somerset quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A short resume" of the chemical and carbonizing properties of the coals are included. Data on the coal beds in this county were obtained from mining companies, land companies, individual landowners, and other sources of authentic information. A base map for each bed in each quadrangle was made to the scale 1 inch equals 1,200 feet. On May 15, 1936, Congress authorized the Bureau of Mines to conduct certain studies, experiments, and investigations of subbituminous coal and lignite .4/ Appropriations were made in July 1937, and since that date an active investigation has been underway to complete the provisions of the act. Part of the investigation has included a comprehensive survey of the known properties of the lower-rank non-coking coals, and provisions were made to obtain more data on certain varieties. In line with this plan, a typically subbituminous coal was selected for an extended series o tests in the standard Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association unit,5/ at the Central Experiment Station. This particular noncaking coal was the first one of its rank that ha& been tested in the apparatus; for this reason the results are of particular interest because the testing apparatus was originally designed for use in studying the coke- and gas-making properties of coking coals. The test as described below has been developed by the Bureau of Mines since 1927 through a cooperative agreement with the American Gas Association.6/ Ninety to 180 pounds of coal is heated in a circular retort, 13 to 18 inches in diameter, at wall. temperatures ranging from 540°C. to 1,110°C. in 100°C. steps. All products axe collected and measured; their physical and chemical properties axe then carefully determined to ascertain the gas- and coke-making properties of the coal.
