Corundum is a natural alumina (A120 ) and is next to the diamond in hardness . Except for the gem varieties , it is used principally as an abrasive , chiefly in grinding , dressing , and polishing metals and optical glass . Natural corundum is preferred to artificial abrasives for certain specialized jobs . Most of the corundum ( excluding emery ) mined in the United States came from the Corundum Hill mine in North Carolina and the Laurel Creek mine in Georgia . The Corundum Hill mine provided over half of the domestic production of corundum prior to 1900. Since 1900 , the importation of foreign corundum and the manufacture of artificial abrasives caused the decline of corundum mining in the United States .

The Convertol process, recently developed in western Germany, is a new method of cleaning and dewatering coal-washery slurries. It is a modified bulk-oil process, in which a very small quantity of heavy oil is dispersed over the surfaces of the coal particles, followed by a screen centrifuge operation in which the water and dirt (clay, shale, and pyrite particles) are thrown out through the screen perforations and the clean coal particles are retained on the screen and discharged as a dewatered, clean coal product of 8- to l0-percent surface moisture. It is reported, also, that the process oil, all of which is retained in the clean-coal product, adds to the coking power of the coal and facilitates the production of briquets, reducing the proportions of binding material required.

The fibrogenic effects of silica in experimental animals and humans has been extensively studied (I 7, 20). However, the pathogenesis and molecular mechanisms underlying lung injury and fibrosis resulting from silica exposure remain to be elucidated. It is well-documented that silica can stimulate monocyte-macrophage lineage cells to produce cytokines and growth factors, including interleukin-I (IL- I) (20), tumor necrosis factor-ex (TNF-cx) (I 7), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-1) (4), and transforming growth factor-P (TGF-P) (24). Consequently, it has been suggested that the fibrogenic effect of silica may be mediated by cytokines in the fater stages of silicosis. During the early phase of interaction between silica and the pulmonary alveolar macrophage, several direct and indirect lines of evidence suggest that reactive oxygen intermediates (ROI) may play a pivotal role in silica- induced tissue damage (2I, 22). One of the most important components of and contributors to ROI is nitric oxide (NO) produced from L-arginine and molecular oxygen under the catalytic influence of NO synthase (NOS) (I 9). At present, at least three NOS genes have been cloned: a constitutive neuron NOS, a constitutive endothelial cell NOS and an inducible NOS (iNOS) (16). A number of factors have been shown to differentially induce iNOS gene expression in different cell lines including bacterial cell products and foreign antigens. During inflammation, NO is a double-edged sword in terms of the host immune defense mechanisms and the physiologic response to an inflammatory insult. The macrophage is one of the major cellular sources of NO. During the early phase of acute inflammation, NO produced from the macrophage appears to facilitate the clearance of pathogens and promotes a local relaxation effect on the microcirculation of vascular smooth muscle. When the production of NO is left unattenuated, especially under oxidative stress, direct cytotoxic effects of NO can emerge through the formation of peroxynitrite as a result of a reaction between NO and superoxide (2).

In 1981 the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the 5,100 acre (2,065 ha) Rubicon RARE II area (No. 5026) in the El Dorado National Forest (fig. 1). Work by the Bureau of Mines indicates that potential for mineral resources in the area is low. Samples from small gravel deposits along the Rubicon River and from favorable structures in the area contained smart amounts of economic minerals. A Tertiary river channel near the north area boundary contains gold values as much as $137.60 per cu yd ($180 per cu m) [(gold at $400 per troy oz ($12.86 per g)]. The channel does not cross the study area. Energy resource potential, including oil, gas, or geothermal, does not exist in this geologic environment.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to optimize the capability of mine roof supports so that the selection and design of these supportsare compatible with the conditions in which they are to be employed. This report describes a study that investigates three parameters influencing the load-carrying capability of wood crib supports: height, configuration, and horizontal displacement. Four crib heights, four parallelogram configurations, and three ratlos of horizontal-to-vertical displacements were tested on full-scale wood crib supports in a mine roof simulator. Test results indicated a reduction in load-carrying capability for increases in crib height. Increasing the contact area by changing the intersecting angle between crib blocks to form parallelogram configurations provided a slight increase in load-carrying capability for the first 10 to 12 in of vertical convergence, after which the cribs became more unstable, resulting in significantly less load-carrying capability. Horizontal displacements did not appreciably affect the load-carrying capability of wood crib supports for the range of vertical displacements (less than 10 in) likely to be encountered underground. This report documents these tests and postulates some explanations of failure mechanics for the observed behavior.

[For a year or more, statements have appeared in the technical press, and Especially in various trade journals, indicating that valuable metals such as gold, silver, platinum, and other rare metals, have been found and also have been successfully extracted from oil shales. These reports stated tat decarbonization and special methods of chlorination treatment, leaching and subsequent Precipitation, also cyanidation followed by table concentration of the residues after cyanidation, all indicated that told ad silver and other metals could be, and were, successfully recovered. Such articles have caused much misunderstanding, and as the correctness of some re of the statements made in them were questioned by some of the technical journals and by various chemists and metallurgists, an investigation of the subject. was begun by the metallurgical division of the Bureau of Mines, in order, if possible, to determine to what extent, if any, metals of value do occur in oil shales, and if so, the feasibility of attempting their recovery by tie processes said to have been used for teat Purpose. Inasmuch as the Bureau's station at Salt Lake City is investigating the recovery of oil from oil shales, the investigation of too recovery of metals from oil shales was assigned to my direction as superintendent 'of that station. An agreement had been entered into with the owner of m extensive oil shale deposit in Wyoming whereby I would personally collect the samples' of shales for use in the investigation.]

This report is one of a series published by the Federal Bureau of Mines describing mining methods and performance at individual operations throughout the United States. The objective of these papers is to promote development and conservation of our mineral resources by disseminating reliable technological information on mining methods, practices, and results that may be applied to the engineering analysis and solution of mining problems. SUMMARY Operation of a limestone quarry producing flux for the steel industry and crushed stone for production of concrete is described in this report. The deposit being mined is a flat-lying limestone formation under a thin overburden 2 to 25 feet thick. The height of the quarry face varies from 9 to 60 feet, averaging 40 feet. Production rate ranges from 4.5 to 5 million long tons per year.

An active list of permissible explosives was published in July, 1931, as part of United States Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3134, under the title of "Active List of Permissible Explosives and Blasting Devices Approved Prior to June 30, 1931." Changes in that list were authorized in August, September, October, November, and December, 1931, and January and March, 1932, as published in Reports of Investigations 3140, 3147, 3150, 3155, 3158, 3161, and 3163, respectively. Investigations at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station have shown that the satisfactory operation of aflame safety lamp depends not only upon proper design and assembly of the lamp but upon the kind of fuel used, and that much of the trouble experienced with permissible flame safety lamps at mines is due to the common use of motor gasolines, none of which is suitable in the present types of permissible flame safety laps. This report gives the results of a limited study to determine what satisfactory fuels are available, the specification limits of such fuels, and to suggest modifications of assembly and care of the lamps to improve performance with any satisfactory fuel.

"INTRODUCTION An exposure of large beryl crystals in pegmatite on Beryl Mountain, in Sullivan County, N. H., was the basis for investigation by the Bureau of Mines to determine the extent of the beryl mineralization and to expose other parts of the same zone that were favorable for additional beryl-rich shoots. Testing by surface cuts, trenching, and tunneling was conducted by the Bureau of Mines from August to December 1943.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to the national security and economy. The deposit is reached from South Acworth over a gravel-surfaced road and about 1,000 feet of good truck trail (fig. 1).The nearest railroad siding is at Cold River, on the Boston & Maine Railroad, where there is also a fairly modern, but now idle, feldspar mill."

Amyl nitrite (C5H11NO2) is a pale-yellow liquid with an ethereal fruity odor and a pungent aromatic taste. Its use in first-aid treatment of cyanide poisoning has been suggested by Chen and his coworkers. Although not the most effective treatment, it is the only one that does not require intravenous injections and is, therefore, very suitable as a preliminary measure, which only involves breaking a capsule near the patient's nose until intravenous injections can be given. In the case of the sodium nitrite -sodium thiosulfate treatment, for instance, such injections require about 15 minutes. As amyl nitrite "Pearls" (small capsules containing liquid amyl nitrite) are placed in many first-aid kits by various companies that handle, store, or use hydrogen cyanide gas, it appeared advisable to investigate the explosion hazards of this material in air and oxygen. Accordingly, tests were made to determine the limits of flammability, temperature range of flammability of amyl nitrite saturated with air and with oxygen, and minimum ignition temperatures of this material in air and in oxygen.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated water-jet-assisted longwall shearers in full-scale laboratory tests and underground. Both test programs showed that use of high-pressure water did little to reduce the shearer motor energy required to maintain a given cutting rate. However, three other major benefits were achieved with the use of water-jet-assisted cutting. At a pressure of 1,800 psi, respirable dust levels were reduced about 80 pct compared with the dust levels of the conventional water spray system operating at 340 psi. Operating at higher pressures required for water-jet assist also resulted in an increase in the average size of coal cut, which translates into a decrease in product fines. Finally, although no controlled measurements of bit wear as a function of water pressure were made, mine personnel reported that the shearer bits lasted longer when water-jet-assisted cutting was used.

Field Demonstration of the Remote Mine Sealing System in a Coal Mine 8. 1 Selection of Field Test Site Eastern Associated Coal Corporation (EACC) offered its Federal No. 1 coal mine in Grant Town, West Virginia as the site for field testing of the remote sealing system. The choice of Federal No. 1 mine was particularly appropriate as the first attempt at fire control by remote sealing was done in this mine in 1963. EACC provided the men and equipment required for much of the initial preparation. Considerable assistance, advice, and background on coal mining technology was given by Mr. William Laird, Vice President for Research and Development, EACC, and by Mr. Lawrence Jackson, Resident Engineer at the Federal No. 1 mine. District 3 USBM office, the West Virginia Bureau of Mines, the Technical Support Group of the USBM, and Local 4047 of the United Mine Workers of America also cooperated. 8.2 Preparation of Field Test Site 8.2. 1 Underground Site Preparation The underground site chosen for the field testing was in a non-working portion of the mine within a few hundred feet of the main haulage road, as shown in Figure 80. Known as "Seven Switch, " this area was a 20 minute walk or 5 minute "jeep" trip from the man-trip shaft. Ten years having passed since this area was actively worked, considerable effort was required for gob clearing, roof bolting, rock dusting, and rejuvenating the track from the haulage road to the test area. This report is the 17th of a series originally issued annually, and more recently bienially, to acquaint the reader with the work of the Division of Explosives Technology, Federal Bureau of Mines. It differs from preceding reports in that its material is presented in two parts: Part I reviews briefly the overall activities of the Division during fiscal years 1955 and 1956;4/ part II presents in abstract form, the publications of the Division during that period. As it is not unusual for research completed in the course of one report period to be published only in the following period, the Bureau believes that the present approach will give a more accurate presentation of its work for the period considered. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) injury database, 227 knee injuries were reported in underground coal mining in 2007 [ 1]. Low-seam coal mines are those with extremely low working heights (<42?). Gallagher et. al [2] found that the average cost per knee injury in low-seam coal operations was $13,121.29. Thus, it can be estimated that the financial burden of knee injuries was nearly three million dollars in 2007. Pressure applied to the knee while kneeling and crawling is likely a risk factor. Typically, mine workers utilize kneepads to better distribute the pressures at the knee; however, their ability to reduce the stresses at the knee is unknown. The objective of this study was to determine the pressure applied to the knee during static postures used in low-seam mining while not wearing kneepads and while wearing two kneepads commonly used in the industry (one articulated and one non-articulated).

The coal and metal mines of the United States furnish this country with a large part of the fuel and material necessary to support our industries and thus make possible the welfare and prosperity of our people and even the continuance of our present-day scale of civilization. Mining companies furnish material to industry with one general purpose in mind -- the making of a profit on their work. Efforts are being made successfully and continually to reduce operating costs, to increase production per man, and to perform work as far as possible mechanically and with more efficiency. These efforts are made primarily to reduce costs, to increase production, or to do both - in other words to make more profits or more certain profits. In the endeavor to reduce expense companies are considering more and more the factors which enter into costs of production, among them the factor of accidents and their cost. This paper endeavors to estimate the approximate cost of accidents to the mining industry in order to present the saving possible through accident reduction or elimination.
