THIS CHAPTER of the Minerals Yearbook relates to employment data and injury experience in the metal, nonmetal, and quarrying industries. Combined statistical data on the mineral industries as a whole can be found in volume Ill. Each industry in the chapter is shown separately, and no attempt has been made to combine and show an overall picture. The voluntary reporting of data on injuries and employment by operators of metal and nonmetal mines and quarries has contributed substantially to the promotion of safety in these industries. Data on injury and employment in the clay mining and milling industry are included for the first time. Table 6 contains data for clay mines only for 1955 and for clay mines and mills for 1956. The clay-mill figures are included with other nonmetallic mills in table 5. The information for norunetallic mills was compiled and published for the first time in the 1955 issue of this report.

A new approach for evaluating pit slope stability by the limiting equilibrium method has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. The finite element method of plane strain analysis is used to find the stress field of the pit slope structure. This stress field is then used to find the normal and shear stresses along a potential failure surface. The normal stresses are used with the Coulomb equation to calculate the shear resistance. The shear stresses are integrated to determine the total driving force. The factor of safety is evaluated from the ratio of the resisting force to the driving force along a failure surface, and is found to be affected by the elastic material properties, modulus of elasticity, and Poisson's ratio.

This study presents a reservoir modeling approach to investigate the relative effects of different coalbed parameters on the migration of methane into development entries. A base coalbed reservoir model of a three-entry development section, where grids were dynamically controlled to simulate the advance of mining at a constant section advance rate, was created and calibrated for a Pittsburgh Coalbed mine in the Southwestern Pennsylvania section of the Northern Appalachian Basin. The values of coalbed parameters were varied to evaluate their effects on predicted methane emissions for various development distances. The results of these parametric simulations were then used to derive linear expressions relating these parameters to methane emissions into the workings. These models were analyzed to assess their significance and adequacy for predictive purposes. This work shows that coupling reservoir simulations with linear modeling yield a technique that can be applicable to different coalbeds. The reservoir parameters used by the linear models (coalbed thickness, pressure, sorption time constant, Langmuir parameters, permeability) can be determined by running relatively simple laboratory tests, such as adsorption equilibrium and permeability determination, on coal samples obtained either from the mining operation or from the exploratory boreholes drilled ahead of mining.

Electrophoretic mobility measurements were made by the Bureau of Mines on samples of a Florida phosphate slime to determine the optimum conditions of coagulation and settling in an aluminum sulfate solution. Addition of anthracite to promote mutual coagulation demonstrated the practicability of heterocoagulation by reduction of the repulsive effect of double layers. By proper selection of the electrolyte and its concentration, the reduction of the double layers to a net zero point of charge causes the predominance of Van der Waals' forces of attraction leading to the coagulation and rapid settling of both particle systems, as is predicted by the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory of colloidal stability. Confirmation was found in the microfiltration tests where a modified Carman equation was applied to evaluate the specific filter bed resistance.

Silver ores from the Candelaria District, Nevada, and Round Mountain District, Colorado, were investigated mineralogically and metallurgically. Silver minerals of four distinct groups were identified: (1) silver sulfide; (2) argentojarosite; (3) silver contained in the iron oxide; and (4) manganese carbonate-oxide minerals, Electrooxidation and acid-chloride leaching techniques were investigated as means of altering silver minerals, and their effects on subsequent silver extraction were determined. Application of the knowledge obtained from mineral leaching studies resulted in development of a sulfur dioxide-sodium chloride leaching sequence for extracting silver from these types of ores. Silver extractions of 80 to 85 percent were obtained by leaching the ores with a sulfurous acid-sodium chloride system. This was an increase of 9 to 61 percent silver extraction over that obtained by conventional cyanidation techniques.

"A remarkable explosion of fire-damp caused by a discharge of lightning at the new shaft at the Sitalpur coal mine, has been reported by the Chief Inspector of Mines of India, who gave the following details:""The explosion occurred during a thunderstorm, and the evidence showed that a flash of lightning had, to all appearances, passed down the shaft caus¬ing disruptive discharges at certain points between the guides and the winding rope, rending the latter at two places situated respectively .228 .feet and 278 feet from the surface, The distance between the winding rope and the side of the shaft was 5 feet 4 inches, indicating a spark gap ;of this width, and an intensity of discharge which could not fail to ignite the explosive mixture of gas and air known to be present in the shaft.""The Compressed Air Magazine, January 1920 issue, which contained the above extract also goes on to state;""In 1915, M, Ferey described in a paper read before the Societe de l'Industrie Minerale phenomena of a similar character to the above. In a pit liable to sudden outbursts of gas, for the sake of safety, shot firing was carried out from the surface. During a storm, in the year 1905, shots went off in two places after the detonators had been connected to the conductors) we read in the Colliery Guardian, London. These shots were situated respectively 1,400 and 1,410 metres from the firing station, Realizing the possible danger from this cause, the precaution was taken to cut the conductors at the bottom of the shaft and to connect there just before firing, Even under these conditions a shot went off spontaneously, -.owing, it is believed, to lightning."""

6. Computer Simulation of Mine Evacuation Analysis of mine evacuation involves manipulating a large number of interacting variables, such as mine passages, hoist movements, miner position etc. , which makes the problem very difficult to solve without use of a digital computer. Therefore, under this contract, a computer program is written to simulate evacuation of a mine under different configurations. The simulation input variables include characteristics of the mine, expressed in the form of a network of passages, properties of hoists and hoisting strategies, initial miner positions, ventilation and compressed air velocities, stench warning system and self-rescuer capabilities. The simulation can be carried out for cases in which there is no fire, i. e , fire drill simulation, or for cases in which there is a fire at any arbitrary location. The fire is assumed to generate gases which impede movement of miners in the gaseous region. However, the thermal effect of the fire on ventilation or on the miners is not considered. The simulation output includes the evacuation time for each miner, movement of the hoists, propagation of smoke through the mine passages and smoke exposure time of the miners. Details of the mine evacuation program are summarized in Appendices A and B Appendix A describes structure of the program and its capabilities. The flexibility of the program and its suggested uses are demostrated by a number of illustrative examples Appendix B is a user' s manual for the program which includes instructions for program use and explanation of the logic employed in the program. A computer listing and printout of a typical output are also included in the Appendix B The ten illustrative examples summarized in Section A 4 (Appendix A) provide proof of validity of the program and help make certain inferences about mine evacuation. The first example, which is simulation of an actual mine fire drill conducted in a mine, has predicted evacuation time within 5 percent of the actual evacuation time in the fire drill, demonstrating thereby, the ability of the program to make accurate predictions.

This study is intended to serve three roles. First, it represents a global overview and summary to supplement and complement the five regional companion volumes of the 1991 edition of the Minerals Yearbook International Review. In this regard, it also extends previous time series under this title that appeared as the introductory chapter to the international volume of the Minerals Yearbook from the inception of that volume in 1963 until it was subdivided into separate regional volumes in 1989. The basic statistical presentations herein generally contain data through and including that for 1991, although in a few instances the most recent statistics are those for earlier years because more recent, comprehensive global statistics simply are not yet available owing to delays in data collection and processing in some countries and continued governmental suppression of data in others. The second role of this study is to provide an update to the coverage of events impacting the world's mineral industry that have occurred between the end of 1991 and the preparation of this study. Inclusion of this update is almost essential because of the potential effect of some of these events on global mineral industry activities.

Reduce fire warning time and avoid activation of false alarms in underground mines. Approach A heat activated stench/tracer gas system was developed which automatically releases the gas mixture into the mine ventilation air. How It Works A canister approximately 12 inches long and 3 inches in diameter is charged with 50 grams of ethyl mercaptan or other appropriate stench gas and 500 grams of instrument detectable Freon. The canister is then pressurized to 100 psi with nitrogen. A disc is used to seal the contents of the canister. A low-temperature alloy designed to melt at a predetermined temperature is used to restrain a spring loaded plunger. Upon exposure to heat, the alloy melts and the plunger is released. Table 55 and figure 19 show the number of fires and fire injuries for stone mills by state during 1990-2001. Table 55 also shows the injury risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays. In all, 118 fires occurred in 33 states. Seventy-six of the fires caused 82 injuries (including 8 fires and 6 injuries involving contractors). The yearly average was 9.8 fires and 6.8 injuries. The Ewhr value was 873 x 106 hr (In = 0.019), and the LWD value was 1,911. Missouri had the most fires (16 fires and 9 injuries), followed by Pennsylvania (15 fires and 14 injuries), Michigan (9 fires and 5 injuries), and Virginia (7 fires and 5 injuries). Of these states, Virginia had the highest injury risk rate value (In = 0.09 1). Table 56, partly illustrated in figure 20, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by time period. The number of fires and fire injuries decreased during most of the periods, with a sharp increase during the last period. The number of employees' working hours increased throughout the periods. The In values follow patterns similar to those shown by the injury values. Tables 57-63 show the number of fires by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material by time period. Figure 21 shows the major variables related to fires for 1990-2001. Table 63 shows the fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location.

That a close analogy exists between the flow of air in mines and the flow of current in electrical networks- has been known for a long time. The laws that have been used to solve series and parallel electrical circuits have been used to solve for the equivalent resistance in mine ventilation problems. Kirchhoff's current and voltage laws have also been adopted in solving mine ventilation network problems. It will be best to define a few terms here regarding networks, and with reference to Figure 1, these definitions can be elucidated. Figure 1 can be represented by the network in Figure 2 without losing any essential details. 1. A junction is a point where two or more airways meet. 2. The segment of a roadway connecting any two junctions is known as a branch. 3. A mesh is a closed path through the network. In the above network, B, C, D and F are the junctions, CF and CD are two of the branches and CFDC is a mesh. Kirchhoff's current law states that the sum of currents entering a junction. Applying this law to the junctions in the ventilation network, one obtains for junctions C and F, the following relationships: JUNCTION C: Q1 = Q4 + Q3 (1) JUNCTION F: Q2 + Q3 = Q5 (2) Similar relationships can be drawn for other junctions. Pneumatic chipping, scaling, and grinding can expose the tool operator to noise levels in the range 90 to 120 dbA. In most chipping and scaling operations, casting resonance is the primary source of noise, followed by air exhaust, and machine and chisel resonance. In grinding, the air-exhaust noise predominates. The Bureau of Mines has shown that noise from these operations can be reduced by up to 15 dbA. Workpiece resonance was reduced by sand or other damping methods; tool resonance, by internal damping; and chisel resonance, by constrained-layer treatment. Mufflers reduced air-exhaust noise, and an acoustically treated booth was effective in containing noise around the work area without increasing operator exposure.

Provide mine personnel with a convenient means of determining the optimum installation geometry of roof trusses in bedded roof. Background Mine operators frequently ask the following questions concerning roof truss installations: 1. Where should the bearing plates or brackets be placed or where should the inclined holes be started? 2. At what angle should the holes for the inclined chords or angle holts be drilled? 3. What tension should be put into the inclined chords so as to achieve the most effective results for the effort and expense? Truss hardware manufacturers have responded to these questions with answers based on what seems to work best. While designs based on past experience are frequently reliable, there was a need for a rational approach that could accommodate a variety of conditions. The Bureau has developed a procedure that enables mine operators to optimize roof truss installations in bedded roof.

The REL of 1 mg/m3 for respirable coal mine dust does not assure a zero risk for the development of occupational respiratory diseases among all miners exposed during a full working lifetime. Consequently, a medical screening and surveillance program that includes initial and periodic chest X-rays and spirometric examinations is important for the early detection of disease and the prevention of "material impairment of health or functional capacity" [30 USC 8 11(a)(6)(A)]. The medical screening and surveillance program is also useful for disease surveillance, which includes the tracking trends, the setting of prevention and intervention priorities, and the assessment of prevention and intervention efforts. NIOSH encourages both underground and surface coal miners to participate in the medical screening and surveillance program.

A simple field test for detecting the presence of germanium in rocks, coals, and flue dust has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. The method consists of dissolving germanium from the samples by either acid or fusion treatment methods, adding a few drops of hematein or phenylfluorone dye, and extracting the resulting colored complex with carbon tetrachloride. INTRODUCTION Germanium is obtained commercially as a byproduct of zinc production, as a coproduct of base-metal refining from germanium-bearing mineral, and as a recovered product from the ash of some coals. The growing use of germanium in the electronics industry has increased demand for this semiconducting metal to the extent that an intensive search for new sources of supply is necessary.

Application of Proposed Revised Standards 57.11-50 to Mines Surveyed 3.1 Subparagraph (a) 1 "Each mine shall have at least two separate and properly maintained escapeways from each working place to the surface which are so positioned that physical or environmental damage to one will not lessen the effective¬ness of the other, and which meet the requirements of travelways and man hoisting standards These escape¬ways shall reach to within 1000 feet horizontally or 300 feet vertically of each working place " 3. 1. 1 Discussion This section will deal with the 1000 and 300 feet distance requirements, Section 3. 5 will deal with the "environmental damage" provisions. During the course of the mine surveys, it became obvious that one mine's 1000 foot distance was nowhere near equal to another' s --not in the actual distance but in the time required to traverse that distance. This -Ls true for the 300-foot requirement as well. The most obvious example is that one could traverse down a 300-foot raise much faster than climbing up the same distance. The temptation is strong to recommend that the distance requirement be changed to travel times instead. However, this approach would unfortunately lead to a lot of subjective evaluations. Having a time requirement for an entire mine evacuation (Subparagraph 6) is one thing, time requirements and the requisite inspection proce¬dures for each working place are quite another.

In this Bureau of Mines report, a previously developed theory of reverse stratified flow in ventilated duct fires is applied to mine-related ventilation systems that utilize an exhaust fan to supply the forced airflows. The coupling between a fire and the ventilation airflow in a single-entry duct is analyzed to relate the air velocity in the absence of a fire to air velocity during a fire. By combining the derived coupling equations with the results of the previously developed theory of reverse stratified flow, it is possible to calculate critical flow velocities required to prevent reverse stratified flow in the event of a duct fire. The sample calculations shown agree with the few experimental results available from small-scale tunnel fires.

Determine the extent of upper extremity cumulative trauma disorders (UECTD's) in the U.S. mining industry. Background UECTD's are injuries that develop gradually over a period of time as a result of repeated stress to a particular body part without adequate time between stresses for full recovery to occur. The stresses that contribute to UECTD's may occur because of the following work components: awkward position of wrist or arm, excessive manual force, high repetitions of manual movement and effort, cold environment, and vibration. Cumulative trauma injuries to the arm and hand have become an ever growing concern among safety and health professionals in a number of different industries and work settings, such as meatpacking operations, assembly-line work, and keyboarding. Mine workers arc also exposed to a combination of stressors and work design deficiencies that result in arm and hand injuries. For example, certain job tasks and environments, such as that of an underground jackleg driller, expose miners to segmental (hand-arm) vibration and cold temperatures. Operators of underground mobile equipment, such as scoops and trams, regularly have their hands in direct contact with vibrating levers and controls.
