This paper briefly describes the excavation procedure of a powerhouse, comprising of its incremental excavation, reinforcement measures, and the installed monitoring system. During the first phase of excavation, the data obtained from monitoring of the behavior of Mudstone layers were used to recommend extra support measures. These data are also used to design the support of the powerhouse during its extension phase. The coastal dune cordon of northern KwaZulu-Natal is among the highest in the world reaching heights in excess of 180 m and up to 2 km in width. It comprises a complex system of Quaternary stacked dunes of various geomorphologies, types and ages (Sudan, 1999; Maud and Botha, 2002;Ware et al., 2001; Ware, 2003). The dunes contain economic heavy minerals that have been exploited for the last two and a half decades. Dune units have recently been defined based on sand composition and texture(Sudan, 1999; Ware, 2003). Despite this, little work has been undertaken on the clay-fraction (< 2 um). This work documents the weathering of dunes to form clays. From the documented clay assemblages and relative abundances, a simplified weathering sequence with increasing maturity can be summarized as follows: primary minerals ? illite + vermiculite ?illite +interstratifications ?illite + montmorillonite ?halloysite + interstratifications + kaolinite ?kaolinite. The dominant controlling factors in determining clay assemblages is pH and leaching conditions. The presence of carbonates results in an alkaline pH and high concentrations of Ca2+and Mg2+which favours the formation of montmorillonite and vermiculite. However, vermiculite tends to form under slightly acidic conditions and is indicative of palaeosols where organic acids produce localized acidic pH’s. In contrast to this, kaolinite will only form and concentrate when carbonates have been leached. Kaolinite dominated samples are considered very mature under current climatic conditions(Chamley, 1989). Halloysite represents a transitional phase between montmorillonite and kaolinite (Herbillon et al., 1981). Ion mobility and evacuation is also critical in determining clay assemblages. Past work and field studies indicate that the dune cordon acts as an open system, resulting in carbonates and mobile ions being readily leached and lost from the system. However, when prolonged weathering has caused an accumulation of fine-grained material, the permeability decreases substantially whereby mobile cations and silica cannot be readily evacuated. This results in the formation of montmorillonite rather than kaolinite, even when carbonates have been leached. Illite (sericite) is considered to alter directly from feldspars. However, dune stacking and geometries, vegetation, water fluxes, reworking and erosion complicates this sequence.

A process for evaluating different options for extraction of mining blocks is presented. The process is described and an example of the application of the process to a case study is presented. Zincor uses a Roast-Leach-Electrowinning circuit to process zinc sulphide concentrates. It also processes zinc oxide fume, originating from a slag smelting operation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Zincor achieved an average zinc recovery of 90.3% during the period January 2006 to May 2007. The bulk of the losses occurred in the iron and lead silver residues, both as soluble and un-dissolved losses. The un-dissolved losses in the iron residue constituted around 33% of the total zinc lost from the circuit, and were largely attributed to the presence of zinc-ferrite in the calcine used for neutralization during iron removal. As part of Zincor?s continuous improvement programme, the un-dissolved zinc losses in the iron residue were targeted by: the partial replacement of calcine with zinc oxide fume (from the DRC); and the preferential use of ?low-ferrite content calcine? as neutralizing agents in the iron removal circuit. These initiatives, coupled with other operational factors, resulted in a marked improvement in recovery to 92.6% during June to December 2007. The zinc oxide fume, directly fed to the circuit, required investigation of the halide rejection capacity of the Zincor circuit. Rejection of chloride via the magnesium bleed operation was considered adequate. Fluoride was mainly rejected via the iron (~70%) and lead silver (~27%) residues. Fluoride rejection via the lead silver residue varied significantly, probably as a result of variations in the sparingly soluble CaF2 content in the feed. The mechanism for fluoride rejection in the iron residues is uncertain. The fluoride rejection capacity of the Zincor iron residue (comprising of mainly jarosites, schwertmannite and ferrihydrite) at 2 ? 4 mg/L F in solution, was estimated at 0.14 ? 0.19 kgF/tFe residue.

By the time a reagent is finally accepted by a mine for use on its plant it could have gone through several screening and evaluation stages. These stages may include laboratory and plant evaluation testwork. This paper outlines the steps that were followed to select, design and implement a frother for KONKOLA COPPER MINES PLC Nchanga Copper Concentrator in Zambia. It discusses initial frother screening work conducted at the Betachem metallurgical laboratory and the subsequent laboratory screening testwork conducted at Nchanga Concentrator. A modified Bikerman test method is discussed which was used to design a frother for the Nchanga flotation plant. The paper also gives an account of several plant scale trials conducted on Nchanga flotation plant and discusses the plant results, frother consumption patterns and some commercial concerns, before the product was finally accepted by the mine.

During mining, the stress in the coal face varies, and, at the same time, the gas flows from the coal body into the excavation, which will cause the gas pressure to change continuously. Assuming the coal gas content of the coal to be constant, and applying the law of energy conservation, the influence of stress concentration on the gas pressure was analysed. It was found that the stress is proportional to the gas pressure. Finally, as a result of analysis and the law of gas flow, the gas pressure dynamic distribution ahead of tunnelling was modelled, and the mechanism by which blasting induces outburst was explained by making use of the model. Consideration of the economic, environmental, and social impacts associated with the life-cycle of a technology is of increasing importance for decision-making in industry. It has been suggested that economic assessment of technology deployment projects requires the translation of associated environmental effects into monetary values. This paper introduces an approach for identifying and evaluating environmental damage in monetary terms. The approach groups the environmental impacts associated with a technology life-cycle system into four main criteria: air, water, land, and mined abiotic resources. The valuation of the impacts on the resources consists of an economic cost benefit analysis (CBA) procedure that comprises four steps: the compiling of an impact inventory, a monetary valuation of the inventory, discounting, and a risk/uncertainty analysis. The monetary valuation step for impacts on air resources is primarily based on published externality costs for Europe and the United States, which are adopted and converted to reflect the South African context. Local opportunity costs are utilized for the other resource criteria. The damage costs are transformed into South African Rand at 2005 prices. The paper demonstrates how the approach may be applied in the assessment of projects in the metallurgical industry. Shortcomings in the approach are identified. For example, not all of the aspects that are considered necessary to assess environmental performances comprehensively can be valued in monetary terms. Also, certain values, specifically those pertaining to opportunity costs, need to be determined on a case-by-case basis. Furthermore, the uncertainties associated with the indicators obtained may strongly influence the usability of the results of an environmental performance assessment, e.g. future damage costs will change with fluctuations in the markets. It is concluded that although such an approach has merit in increasing the understanding of the potential financial implications of a technology?s environmental performance, further research is required to improve the approach described if it is to be used further in the South African metallurgical industry. Damage cost estimates that are specific to South Africa need to be developed to reduce uncertainty, and the combination of both quantitative and qualitative approaches is recommended for comprehensive sustain-ability decision-making.

Anglo Platinum commenced commercial underground borehole radar (BHR) surveys during 2006 following a series of trial surveys using both the ?slimline? Geomole and Aardwolf systems. Current borehole radar systems comprise radio frequency transmitter ? receiver antennae operating at 30 -100MHz that measure the time taken for a transmitted pulse to traverse a rock volume and be received (Fig 1). The time taken can be converted to distance if the transmission speed of the pulse through the rock volume is known. The transmitted pulse may be reflected off a suitably orientated geological reflector (in reflection mode) or may be recorded in receivers located in other boreholes (cross-hole tomographic mode). In the Bushveld Complex lithologies, these radar systems have ranges of 30-50 metres in reflection mode depending on the electrical properties of local stratigraphic units. Both the Merensky Reef (MR) and the underlying UG2 have been shown to act as reflectors, which offer the opportunity of using BHR as an imaging or mapping tool. Reflection of the radar signal occurs wherever a strong contrast in dielectric constants occurs such as between norite and harzburgite or where chromitite stringers are present. [ ] Fig 1 Main elements of a borehole radar system Much experience has been gained in the practical application of BHR surveys in platinum mining. The value of a BHR survey is that it provides a continuous line of information to ?connect the dots? rather than a few discrete pierce points. BHR surveys can be used to mitigate risk in three crucial areas: ? Mine planning at the strategic as well as tactical level ? geotechnical evaluation of proposed shaft sites, detailed profiling or mapping of reef and disruptions of the reef such as faults, rolls and potholes; ? Mineral resource classification ? identification of structural discontinuities in orebodies affecting resource classification e.g. potholes and reef facies; ? Safety ? identifying areas with poor ground conditions that are often associated with faults, dykes and potholes.

Transient states of the air parameters in mine workings occur as the effects of natural and technological disturbances, and in particular as a result of changes in ventilation conditions, caused by alteration of the mine workings geometry, state of fans performance or emission of gases. Particularly significant are those transient states caused by disturbances resulted from catastrophes, since they are frequently associated with violent phenomena that may be a danger for life and health of the staff working underground. The paper presents a number of examples of transient states of the air parameters in mine workings after a catastrophe, like the bump in the ZABRZE-BIELSZOWICE coal mine. Registration of air disturbances by the monitoring systems of ventilation in mine workings in the area of disaster both at the moment of a catastrophe occurrence and later during the rescue operation, enabled to track out the incident and identify the circumstances and reasons of those tragic events which caused death of 18 miners during last two years. Furthermore, computer simulations of processes occurring in mine ventilation network make effective research tools to be applied in practice, among others for the study of accidents and disasters.

"Two shortened test procedures for estimating the Bond ball work index are compared for suitability of use on Zambian/DRC-type copper–cobalt ores. The first procedure is based on a batch milling test while the second procedure is based on a limited locked-cycle test. Both procedures were conducted using a standard Bond test mill. INTRODUCTION The Bond ball work index is widely used in the field of minerals processing as an indicator of ore grindability. The work index is determined by means of a locked-cycle test procedure that typically requires seven to eight cycles to stabilise at a re-circulating load of 250%. A typical test requires between three to four kilogram of ore sample and around eight hours of operator time. For geometallurgical test work applications, where a large number of variability samples are to be tested, it would be highly beneficial to use a test procedure that requires less sample mass and operator time. Certain test work laboratories, for example SGS and JK Tech, are already offering various types of shortened test procedures for estimating the Bond ball work index. This paper discusses a comparison of two shortened test procedures that were evaluated for suitability of use on Zambian/DRC-type copper–cobalt ores. EXPERIMENTAL Test Procedure 1 – Batch Milling The first test procedure is derived from a batch milling approach proposed by the University of Hacettepe (Aksani, 2000). Some modifications were, however, made to the data analysis method from that originally proposed. During this test procedure, a 700 mL volume of sample is milled in a standard Bond test mill for a pre-determined number of revolutions. The feed and product particle size distributions are measured for each test. These results are then used to back-calculate a cumulative breakage rate parameter (k) for each particle size, according to the following formula:"

Abstract The process of stress-induced fracturing around underground excavations in brittle rock is associated with dilation or volume increase of the failed, fractured rock. Different attempts to account analytically for this dilation have been made within the framework of plasticity theory. This theory has been developed mostly for metals, strain-hardening materials or soils, but brittle failure of rock-like materials is characterized by strain-softening behaviour and the volume change is dominated by geometric factors, which may violate stability principles of plasticity. In this work a semi-empirical Rock Mass Bulking Model (RMBM) was developed, using as starting concepts: dilation angle, plastic strain rates, effective deformation modulus, effective Poisson&apos;s ratio, Griffith locus, and the definition of a bulking factor BF introduced by Kaiser et al. (1996). The model was calibrated in order to obtain bulking factors that are consistent with experimental data and case studies of measured bulking around underground excavations. Résumé La fracturation provoquée par le stress autour des excavations souterraines dans le minéral friable est associée à la dilatation ou à l’augmentation du volume de la roche en rupture. Dans le cadre de la théorie de la plasticité, différents essais ont été faits dans le but de trouver une justification analytique pour cette dilatation. Cette théorie a d’abord été élaborée pour les métaux, les matériaux ou les sols d’écrouissage, mais la rupture fragile de matériaux d’aspect rocheux est caractérisée par un comportement d’amollissement et le changement de volume est dominé par des facteurs géométriques, ce qui pourrait ne pas être conforme aux principes de stabilité de la plasticité. Dans le présent ouvrage, un Modèle semi-empirique de masse rocheuse a été élaboré, dont les concepts initiaux sont les suivants : angle de dilatation, vitesse de fluage plastique, module effectif de déformation, coefficient effectif de Poisson, locus de Griffith, et la définition d’un facteur de foisonnement FF apportée par Kaiser et al. (1996). Le modèle a été calibré afin d’obtenir des facteurs de foisonnement qui soient conformes aux données expérimentales et aux études de cas sur le foisonnement mesuré autour des excavations souterraines. Kurzfassung Der Prozess von Brüchen in unterirdischen Abgrabungen in sprödem Gestein ist mit der Ausweitung oder der Volumenzunahme des gebrochenen Gesteins verbunden. Verschiedene Versuche im Rahmen der Verformbarkeitstheorie haben versucht, diese Ausweitung analytisch festzustellen. Die Verformbarkeitstheorie wurde hauptsächlich für Metalle, kalthärtende Werkstoffe oder Böden entwickelt, da sprödes Versagen von Gestein ähnlichen Werkstoffen von kaltenhärtendem Materialverhalten gekennzeichtnet ist, und die Volumenveränderung von geometrischen Faktoren beherrscht wird, die die Stabilitätsprinzipien der Plastizität übertreten. In dieser Arbeit wurde ein halbempirisches Rock Mass Bulking Model (RMBM) (Modell für das Aufgehen der Gesteinsmasse), entwickelt, für das die folgenden Anfangsprinzipien benutzt wurden: Ausweitungswinkel, plastische Fliessensätze, wirksames Verformungsmodul, leistungsfähiges Poissons Verhältnis, die Griffith Ortskurve und die Bestimmung eines Aufgehensfaktor BF1 der von Kaiser et al. (1996) eingefürt wurde. Das Modell wurde so kalibriert, dass es die Aufgehenfaktoren erzielte, die mit den Vesuchsangaben und den Fallstudien von Aufgehensmessungen in unterirdischen Abgrabungen übereinstimmen.

Up to now, Topsøe WSA (Wet gas Sulphuric Acid) plants have been in operation for almost 30 years, and close to 80 plants have been sold. In spite of its unique features and ability to treat gases without any prior drying, the WSA technology has had certain restrictions with regards to SO2 concentration in the feed gas, and the overall conversion of SO2 by catalytic means has been limited to approx. 99.7%. In commercial scale sulphuric acid production on the basis of elemental sulphur and metallurgical off-gases, there is a demand for higher SO2 conversion and treatment of gases with a higher content of SO2. Therefore Topsoe has further developed its WSA technology to cope with these demands. This paper will explain more about the principles of such new development and leave the delegate with a better understanding of the potentials of the new generation of the WSA technology from Topsoe.

Transalloys produces 160 000 tons of SiMn per annum from five AC submerged-arc furnaces. The lime-ore melt from two AC open-arc furnaces is contacted with SiMn to produce 50 000 tons of medium carbon FeMn per annum. Metallics in the slag are reclaimed in a jigging plant, which has been in operation since 1999. The flow of materials between the jigging plant and furnaces has been optimised. The amount of recycle slag in the feed of the SiMn furnaces has been decreased by more than 30% which still provides satisfactory stability of the furnace operation. The jigging plant has absorbed all the additional slag generated, to recover SiMn metal. A review of the raw materials used and operating parameters for SiMn production was also undertaken. Slag to metal ratios were decreased by more than 30% by reducing the slag recycle, removing magnesite from the recipe and introducing high-grade ore. Electrode penetration was improved by reducing coke levels and by utilising more reactive coal. The pitch circle diameter (PCD) was reduced to get a better operating stability on furnace no 5 using the MINSTRAL Control System. Energy consumption on the furnaces improved by more than 15% while SiMn production increased as a result by more than 18%.

To estimate the detailed characteristics of the rock around the cavern during excavation, new monitoring technique for dynamic properties of the rock has been applied. In this paper, micro-seismic monitoring and AE monitoring technique are applied to the excavation of large underground rock cavern and the result was discussed to clarify the acutal behavior of EDZ around the cavern. Zur Einschätzung der Gesteinseigenschaften um die Ausschachtung herum haben die Autoren eine Technik eingesetzt, mit der die physikalischen und dynamischen Änderungen im Gestein um den Schacht während der Ausschachtung beobachtet werden. In der vorliegenden Studie wurde zur mikroseismischen Überwachung ein AE Überwachungsverfahren eingesetzt und die Autoren berichten über die Veränderungen in den Gesteinseigenschaften um die Ausschachtung herum. Dans le but d&apos;évaluer en détail les propriétés des roches qui forment les parois des cavernes creusées, les auteurs ont utilisé une technique de mesure permettant d’observer les modifications physico-dynamiques des roches aux alentours de la caverne pendant son excavation. Dans le cadre de cet article, une technique de surveillance de l’agitation et du bruit microséismiques a été mise en œuvre et les auteurs font état de la modification des propriétés de la roche environnante.

We propose a layout design for the UG2 Reef where weak geological alteration layers are present. The collapse of the Everest platinum mine in South Africa indicated that these layers substantially weaken the pillars. The popular Hedley and Grant pillar strength formula cannot be used where these alteration layers are present. Underground investigations at Everest mine and numerical modelling of the layout were conducted using the TEXAN code and a limit equilibrium model. Simulations of a collapsed area and an intact area allowed for a preliminary calibration of the model. This was subsequently used to explore modified layouts for these ground conditions. An alternative is to compartmentalize the blocks of ore using barrier pillars. The numerical modelling predicted that the barrier pillars appear to remain stable even in the case of large-scale collapses, provided their width exceeds 25 m. Main access routes into the mine can be protected by a double row of pillars at least 15 m wide to provide a safe travelling way. As a cautionary note, these conclusions are based on the model calibration and this needs to be refined in future. Calibration of the limit equilibrium model remains a challenge owing to the large number of parameters involved.
