The move away from the use of strike stabilising pillars at depth and the adoption of the more flexible system of mining towards final dip remnant pillars brings new opportunities for optimising mine design. In the initial planning stage, the size and spacing of the final pillars is designed using classical design criteria, through limiting modelled values of Energy Release Rate (ERR), Average Pillar Stress (APS) and Excess Shear Stress (ESS). In reality, mines often leave pillars that are larger than those originally designed. One of the reasons for leaving more ground is an unexpectedly high rate of seismicity. In this paper, we present developments in integration of modelling and seismicity that are aimed at developing design criteria that are more responsive to local conditions.

In any manufacturing organization internal logistics plays a vital role in improving and maintaining the productivity. In Ferro Alloys manufacturing organization where there is huge input of raw material in terms of ore, reductants and variety of fluxes amounting to about four times of the mass of alloy produced need to be handled from yard to furnaces , internal logistics requires utmost attention. Any deviation or mismatch between stock and requirement will affect furnace operation. Though the activities are being outsourced by most of the organization, these require close monitoring. This communication presents an optimization model which can work as a ready reference for the manager to decide upon the material quantity and the furnace to be fed with an objective of minimizing the cost of handling and zero production loss.

ABSTRACT: New techniques and methods for 3D geo-mechanical model test are presented in this paper. The new model material NIOS with high density and low cost; the so-called DPSS (Discrete Principal Stress Surface) loading concept, the loading and monitoring system for the generation of the 3D initial stress field of the model test, also the special techniques and apparatuses for modelling the excavation of caverns located deep inside the model material, are developed and introduced. By adopting those new techniques, a very large 3D geo-mechanical model test with high comparability for a newly designed underground powerhouse has been successfully fulfilled. Key Words: 3D model test, underground group caverns, excavation process modeling. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Neue Techniken und Methoden für 3D geomechanischen Modellversuch wurden in diesem Artikel vorgestellt. Ein neues Modellmaterial mit hocher Dichte und niedrigem Preis, ein sogenanntes DPSS (Discrete principal stress surface) Ladenkonzept, ein Laden- und Überwachungssystem für die Erzeugung des 3D primären Spannungsfelds und überdies spezielle Techniken und Maschinen für das Ausbruch der tief in dem Versuchsmodell liegenden Kaverne wurden entwickelt. Bei Anwendungen dieser neuen entwickelten Techniken wurde ein sehr großer 3D Modellversuch mit großem Maßstab für ein geplantes unterirdisches Kraftwerk erfolgreich durchgeführt. Application of Gy?s formula is appropriate for calculation of the Fundamental Error (FE) prior to samples being collected at any stage of the minerals process, provided that sampling parameters K and a (alpha) have been determined by calibration of the ores. Two types of calibration procedure are well established in the industry, the Hetrogeneity test and the 32-piece sampling tree experiment. The sampling tree experiment uses the variance and average grade of metal analyses from four series of samples at different nominal fragment size, as the basic input data. Pierre Gy suggested the cube as an appropriate exponent of the nominal fragment size for use in his equation. More recent work suggests that this exponent is variable and characteristic of specific ores and therefore requires calibration. The method described here explains the experimental procedure of the calibration. It is then possible to calculate a sampling nomogram using the sampling parameters K and a. This allows the sampler to determine a suitable protocol for the sampling event that will ensure that the FE does not exceed a predetermined precision at any point in the sampling procedure.

A voluntary comprehensive environmental Risk Assessment was launched at the end of 2004 by the International Chromium Development Association. The completion is scheduled for mid 2006.EURAS, a leading environmental consultancy, was commissioned for this project, as this firm wrote in particular the Metals Environmental Risk Assessment Guidelines, the reference document for the metals and metals compounds, in particular for the forthcoming European new Chemical Policy and the Globally Harmonized System for the Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). This project follows a stepwise approach, comprising 3 distinct steps: - Initial Risk Assessment: compilation, evaluation of the existing effects and exposure data for chromium III compounds and chromium metal. This information will be used for the compilation of an initial Risk Assessment Report. - Data gap analysis: which type of additional effects data should be collected and/or which exposure scenarios merit a more detailed targeted risk assessment? Recommendations and/or suggestions for further research will be formulated. - Road map: prioritization and ranking of the different proposed research programs. The presentation will mainly focus on the results and recommendations of the initial environmental Risk Assessment from an International perspective and not from an European point of view. - Hazard assessment ? definition of the Predicted Non effect Concentration (PNEC) for each environmental compartment (water, sediment, soil) - Exposure assessment ? definition of the Predicted Environmental Concentrations (PEC) for each environ-mental compartment - Comparison of the local PEC with PNEC for the chromium III compounds and chromium metal EU industry sectors covered in the project: mining of chromite, metallurgical production of chromium metal, chromium containing alloys production, production of trivalent chromium chemicals and the main applications (pigments, leather tanning, etc..). The current status on the environmental Classification and Ranking for chromium III compounds, Chromium metal and its alloys in the GHS will also be covered.

Combustion and thermal NOx formation have been modelled using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) commercial code Fluent 6.1. The aim was to predict and give a better understanding of the combustion in electric arc furnaces for the production of ferro-silicon and silicon metal. Another important objective was to assess the impact of a number of operating parameters on the NOx formation. The CFD tools used are de-scribed with a special focus on models for species and turbulence transport. Sensitivity studies have been carried out to study the influence of several parameters: sub-models, process gas composition and distribution at the charge surface and influence of the presence of SiO. The main conclusions are: ?Using the combination of a realistic design, boundary conditions and models, the simulated NOx level is in quantitative agreement with measurements. The presence of water vapor is particularly important because of its influence on the specific heat of the mixture and resulting temperature. ?Release of significant amounts of SiO from the charge surface results in an important increase of NOx, even if we applied a simplified combustion model for SiO gas. However, because of lack of thermal and compositional data for blowing situations (when SiO flows directly from the arc cavity through open channels to the charge surface), no quantitative validation is possible. The way SiO is distributed (uniformly or as a jet) has a limited impact on the result in our computations.

Since the early 1990s the underground mining industry has embarked on a vigorous program of improving process and eliminating costs. A leading development in this program has been the implementation of leaky feeder radio systems as an enabling infrastructure for future automation. El-Equip Inc. has led this development with more than 175 mines implementing mine-wide radio infrastructures for voice and data. In this paper, we describe the implementation of a digital radio network which supports existing installations through to an automation infrastructure employing full digital cellular communications with mobile video roaming capabilities. We outline the evolutionary path from existing low speed data communications links through to 155 Mbps and beyond.

Many large caverns are being constructed in great depths in Korea mainly for the storage of oil and LPG. These caverns are mostly located near the port where rock conditions are reasonably good. In some instances, the horizontal stress is very high and endangers the stability of the cavern. The purpose of this study is to assess the stability of large caverns excavated in a rock mass with high horizontal stress where Ko value is close to 3. Result shows that stress exerted in the shotcrete at crown exceeds allowable value when the 3rd bench is excavated. Also found is the tensile failure of shotcrete near the boundaries between benches. In Korea werden viele grosse Kaverne fuer Aufbewahrung vom Oel und Fluessiggas in grosser Tiefe gebaut. Am Meisten befinden sich diese Kaverne in der Naehe von Haefen, wo der Fels gute Verhaeltnisse zum Bauen einer Kaverne besitzt. In einigen Faellen ist die Horizontalspannung sehr gross und dadurch wird die Stabilitaet vom Kaverne gefaerdet. Der Zweck dieser Arbeit ist die Stabilitaet des im Fels gebauten grossen Kavernes mit hoher Horiaontalspannung zu schuetzen, wo Ko-Wert sich auf 3 naehrt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Spannung im Spritzbeton an der Krone den zulaessigen Wert ueberschreitet, wenn das dritte Bank ausgegraben wird. Im Bereich des Spritzbetons zwischen Baenke wurde das Zugversagen festgestellt. Des larges cavités nombreuses sont en train d’être construites en grand profondeur en Corée prin-cipalement pour le stocage du pétrole et LPG. Ces cavités sont pour la plupart situées près de la porte oú les conditions des roches sont résonablement bons. En quelques cas, la contrainte hori-zontale est trés haute et met en danger la stabilité de la cavité. L’objet de cet étude est d’estimer la stabilité des large cavités excavées dans une masse de roche ayant une haute contrainte horizontale oú la valeur de Ko est proche à 3. Le résultat montre que la contrainte exercée dans le shotcrete à la couronne dépasse la valeur admissible quand le troisième banc est excavé. En plus une faillite en tension du shotcrete près de la frontière entre des bancs est trouvée.

A mining engineer from South Africa, whose research has taken him to some of the world?s deepest gold mines, is the winner of the St Andrews Prize. Daniel Limpitlaw, 27, picked up a cheque for $25,000 for his dissertation on reversing the damage done by early mining technology, which he claims is partly responsible for blighting the urban environment in many South African cities. Launched in October 1998 by the University of St Andrews and international energy company Conoco, the St Andrews Prize sought practical solutions to environmental problems. It attracted interest from 450 individuals and groups from countries as diverse as China, Pakistan, Canada, New Zealand, Germany, the UK and the United States.

Over the last decade significant development and use has been made of a simulation model that describes the HCFeMn smelting operations in Assmang Ltd. This spreadsheet based, semi-empirical, predictive model is derived from data from the submerged arc furnaces at Assmang?s Cato Ridge, KwaZulu-Natal smelter site. Departures from the empirical base case mass balance due to changes in the ores, reductant feeds and operating parameters are accounted for by use of fundamental relationships and heuristic type ratios which are applied in an iterative manner in the model. The model performs a sequential set of calculations to iteratively converge on a fully consistent mass and energy balance solution, which predicts Mn alloy and slag output masses and compositions for a given set of feeds. 440 MWh per operating day is used as the basis of energy input. The paper describes the key model components, assumptions made and calculation approach. Added to the mass and energy balance is a cost and revenue balance, which allows prediction of the economic performance for each simulation. Substantial use of the model has been made in simulating the performance of the current Assmang HCFeMn furnaces for both smelter investigations and future production planning. The model has also been a valuable tool in the strategic analysis of the use of future Mn ores and has formed the vital link between mine ore grades (metal and slag elements) and the expected alloy output, grade and profitability. Additionally, the model has been used in benchmarking exercises to predict other Mn smelting operations with remarkable accuracy. The paper highlights some aspects of the approaches taken in using the model to benchmark Assmang?s own furnace performance and cost competitiveness with other producers. For Assmang the development and application of this modelling technology has led to transformation in understanding of the Assmang HCFeMn furnace operations and increased awareness of the potential of its Mn ore bodies.

Maybe the scourge of our dams and reservoirs?the water hyacinth can be put to good use! The novel technology of phytoremediation embraces plant accumulation processes for the cleanup of toxic heavy metals and organic chemicals. Several plant species have been identified that are excellent hyperaccumulators of a number of heavy metals, e.g., Brassica juncea (Indian mustard) and Thlaspe caerulescens (Alpine pennycress). Other speciesincluding Myriophyllum brasiliense(Parrot?s feather), Salixsp. (willow), and Popullussp. (poplar) have also demonstrated phytoremediating abilities.

The discrete Gaussian model is a very popular change-of-support model for estimating block grade distributions. It is designed for a stationary random function Z(x) that is regarded as the transform of a stationary random function Y(x) with Gaussian marginal. It is based on an assumption that is not fully true and thus constitutes an approximation to the exact solution. We examine the effect of this approximation on the modelling of the marginal distribution of block values of a lognormal random function. The initial discrete Gaussian model and a variant of that model are considered.

Cost analysis of chrome ore reduction is one of the important issues facing ferrochrome producers in today?s competitive environment. Much of this depends on quality and various ratios in the actual ore. The latter can have a direct bearing on electricity consumption and optimum efficiency of the furnaces. While the industry has been successful in reducing costs by designing larger and more efficient furnaces, the role of the optimum blend of ore has perhaps been given less emphasis. This paper will discuss the general specification and metallurgical characteristics of various chrome ores for producing high carbon ferrochromium on industrial scale. By analysing the results obtained from smelting, including chromium recovery and energy consumption, the determining parameters in total cost of ferrochromium i.e. chrome ore; reductant and energy consumption can be optimized. Our study is based on actual experiences obtained from Faryab Ferroalloy Plant over a period of approximately three years.

At Namdeb, submerged beaches are earmarked for sampling and future mining and various sampling configurations are tested for optimality through the use of spatial simulations. For the creation of these virtual orebodies, basic statistics and variograms are needed, but in this specific instance no data exists from which the necessary parameters can be determined. The best that can be done is to use proxy data from onshore beaches, with adaptations where needed. The reworking of raised beaches during periods of rising and falling sea levels in some cases destroyed the internal beach structures, and it is very difficult to determine the variograms. A method is proposed whereby simulated annealing is used to adjust the sample locations to align the data pertaining to beach crests or cliff lines, thus improving the variogram structure along the shoreline in the direction of the highest geological continuity.

Manganese imparts numerous beneficial mechanical properties. Hence it finds extensive application in iron, steel and non-ferrous sector. Prevalently, it is incorporated in the form of master alloys i.e. 'ferromanganese'. In India, ferromanganese is mainly the inexpensive and paramount source of availability of manganese. Various conventional and non-conventional techniques of ferromanganese production have been adopted in past and present. However, these techniques have demerits viz. high refractory, energy consumption, losses of valuables in slag and fumes. Also geographical co-ordinates of the plant restricted the manufacturer to prefer an appropriate process. Accordingly, the industrially implemented methods had reliance on availability of infrastructure, energy, mineral resources, grade of raw material, outlay of labor, environmental compatibility of technique etc. In view of the liberalized economy and the gap scenario in the supply and demand of ferromanganese, the authors felt it indispensable to explicitly bridge up this vacuum by initially designing a simple energy conserving, eco-friendly, low capital investment technique for decarburization of ferromanganese. Measurement of the data involved studying the impact of rate governing parameters on the process kinetics. INFACON is of special significance to people in South Africa who are interested in ferro-alloys, because it was in South Africa that the idea of regular international congresses on ferro-alloys was conceived and developed. INFACON 74, the first-ever such congress, was held in Johannesburg from 22nd to 26th April, 1974, being organized by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the National Institute for Metallurgy, and the Ferro Alloy Producers' Association of South Africa. Ticor South Africa is currently involved in the mining and processing of a heavy mineral oredeposit at Hillendale Mine on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast. The orebody is characterized by a high ultra fine fraction (-45µm) that has a variable rheological behaviour when subjected to shear and hydration. Experience at Hillendale has shown that the ultra fine mineral tailings are sensitive to shear history in terms of shear intensity and shear duration as well as hydration history. This phenomenon expresses itself right through the primary beneficiation process influencing the mineral separation, but is especially prevalent on the residue disposal i.e. slurry transport and deposition on the tailings impoundment. Tube viscometer test work was conducted on the flocculated fine tailings that indicated that there was a change in rheology as a result of shear. This paper presents the results of the on-site test work conducted at the mine to measure the rheology at various stages in the process.

Better utilisation of electric power and coke is vital in reducing production costs and CO2-emissions in production of ferromanganese. All FeMn smelting operations consume 10 to 30 % more carbon than the carbon needed to reduce MnO and FeO to metal and the carbon contained in the alloy. Potassium which re-circulates and builds up in the furnace has been shown to be the main culprit causing both excessive carbon consumption, by catalysing the Boudouard reaction, and increased electric power consumption. The reaction between CO2 and ordinary metallurgical coke or coke impregnated with potassium has been studied at temperatures from 800 to 1100°C in a thermobalance apparatus. Ordinary coke did not react to any great extent at temperatures up to 1000°C, whereas the addition of potassium (2-10 %) resulted in a huge increase in reaction rates. The ultimate goal is to fit the results into a reaction rate model containing the equilibrium constant for the solid-gas heterogeneous reaction between CO2 and a free active site on the carbon reactant producing CO and adsorbed oxygen (an occupied site). The model includes the partial pressures of CO and CO2, a reaction rate constant that is a function of both the total number of reaction sites of carbon, and the potassium content. The potassium dependency is taken care of by introducing activity coefficients for the carbon sites. As the first step towards such a model, a regression line for the Boudouard reaction rate has been established.
