"Cut-off grade is a decision-making criterion often used for determining the quantities of material (ore and waste) to be mined, ore processed, and saleable product. It therefore directly affects the cash flows from a mining operation and the net present value (NPV) of a mining project. A series of different cut-off grades that are applied over the life of mine (LOM) of an operation defines a cut-off grade policy. Due to the complexity of the calculation process, previous work on cut-off grade calculation has mostly focused on deterministic approaches. However, deterministic approaches fail to capture the uncertainty inherent in input parameters such as commodity price and grade-tonnage distribution. This paper presents a stochastic cut-off grade optimization model that extends Lane’s deterministic theory for calculating optimal cut-off grades over the LOM. The model, code-named ‘NPVMining’, uses realistic grade-tonnage realizations and commodity price distribution to account for uncertainty. NPVMining was applied to a gold mine case study and produced an NPV ranging between 7% and 186% higher than NPVs from deterministic approaches, thus demonstrating improved project value from using stochastic optimization approaches. Microwave technology has for decades been a tool for astronomers to map and understand the complexities of the universe its composition and extent. It is also used on a laboratory scale by spectroscopists to examine properties of atomic and molecular compounds. In this novel work we will introduce microwave technology to be used for the investigation of liquid slag structures. The preliminary results indicate that the alteration of the slag composition could be correlated to the measured microwave refractive index. In this paper we present The Ultimate Flotation Cell, a newly developed flotation cell that is proving very popular in the industry. All flotation cells have only one purpose and that is the recovery of the required product, the patented impeller and disperser system of the Ultimate Flotation Cell allows total flexibility in order to achieve the optimal recovery. This ability to tune the cell performance provides the optimization of the ?capture? (collection) stage, all existing models address the need for a wide bubble size distribution (100µm-2 mm) to obtain a better flotation size-by-size, Yoon, 1999,Yoon 2000, Franzidis and Manlapig, 1999. The Ultimate Flotation Cell provides flexible performance optimization. This ability to optimize the flotation regime particular to a specific ore is achieved by the following factors: ? The impeller allows vastly improved air induction rates compared to conventional and sparged cells. This ability to induce and disperse large quantities of air, in a controlled manner, allows the cells to be tuned to give the optimal Sb by varying the rotational speed via a VSD which every cell is fitted with. ? The patented impeller gives a very constant and stable air induction rate, which ensures that the cell?s circulation pattern is constant, giving a very stable surface, allowing optimal froth depth. ? Although conventional dart valve, level control can be offered, great success has been achieved with a simple draft tube/sand relief device. ? The cells have a inlet design similar to the old Denver ?Cell-to-Cell? design, which guarantees the at lease one pass through the mixing zone in each cell. "Successful development of projects or life-of-mine strategies requires an understanding of the relative sensitivity of value drivers such as grade, tonnage, energy costs, direct operational costs, and recoveries. For example, the results could vary significantly depending on the grade strategy, given a specific orebody amenable to open pitting.Pit optimization is a very powerful tool widely used in the industry to determine the pit shell with the most attractive value potential. Based on the input parameters utilized, the pit optimization process determines the stripping ratio, mineable reserves, and pit shape, and effectively calculates a cut-off grade, assumed to be the optimal cut-off grade.Once the initial pit optimization process is completed, the need may arise to align the optimization results with the company strategy by further optimizing other criteria, such as maximizing short-term cash flow. This paper describes and discusses the selection of an alternative cutoff grade as a strategic intervention. It involves changing the cut-off grade, effectively increasing the head grade to gain a strategic advantage aligned with the company strategy, with a clear understanding of the financial value impact. With this knowledge, it is clear that pitoptimization establishes the basis for future analysis and refinement.IntroductionIt is common for companies to select the optimal pit shell defining the mineral reserve without much further consideration. However, companies may consider various strategies to optimize the long-term value of the project or to optimize the short-term cash flow. Analysis of the entire life-of-mine value estimation process shows that the selection of a cut-off grade and other parameters should be based on careful analysis. Determining the optimal cut-off grade of ore at a different period during the life of mine to maximize the value is often one of the most difficult challenges for a company.A cut-off grade is the lowest grade that mining activities will target. As a result the average mining grade, which drives the value of a project, will always be higher than the cutoff grade applied.According to Bascetin and Nieto (2007) cut-off optimization is still not widely practised. Cut-off grade optimization is an effort to maximize the value of a project by understanding the capacity constraints in the mine, mill, and the market. At any point during the life of mine, any or all of the limitations on tonnage mined, tonnage milled, and product sold may be constraining the system. To ensure cut-off optimization is done correctly, the capacity constraints must be independent of the cut-off grade."

"Historically, mining companies worldwide provided housing and developed towns to accommodate their employees. At the end of the 1980s this approach became less prevalent and attempts were made to mitigate the effects of mine development and mine closure on communities living near the mines. Permanent settlement in mining towns urgently needed to be minimized. Since the advent of democracy, South African policy has moved in the opposite direction, shifting the emphasis to creating integrated communities and encouraging home ownership. Despite this policy shift, however, mines continue to influence local housing conditions. One direct outcome has been the development of informal settlements. We surveyed 260 informal settlement households in Postmasburg, a small and remotely located town in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. We found that because they employ contract workers and thus arouse expectations of employment, the mines here contribute extensively to the development of informal settlements. But local factors also contribute, and the functional role of informal settlements as a form of housing that supports mobility should not be underestimated. We also found that both municipal and mining company policies for informal settlements were inadequate. Finally, we found that low-income informal settlers not associated with mine employment suffered the highest levels of social disruption.IntroductionA mine generates demand for labour, which in turn generates demand for housing. When settlements spring up near a mine this often means poor housing conditions. In South Africa in the 1960s and 1970s mining companies invested heavily in company towns or mining settlements, but they have become increasingly hesitant to do so, for three reasons. First, declining resource prices in the mid-1980s and the 1990s compelled them to focus on core business interests and reduce the costs of peripheral activities such as housing (Bryceson and MacKinnon, 2013); second, at the turn of the 20th century they were often accused of taking over the role of local government (IIED, 2002) and consequently became hesitant to invest in developing mining towns; and third, changing labour regimes also curbed their investment in such towns (Haslam McKenzie, 2010). Increasingly, the companies began to endorse block-roster shifts, and outsourcing also became more common in the early 1990s. Block-roster shifts in Australia (together with improved technology) have meant that miners do not need to settle near the mines but can fly in and fly out and have their urban houses as their stable homes. This has had serious negative implications for housing in remote towns in Australia, particularly worker camps, large-scale renting out of available accommodation, and ‘hot-bedding’."

"Coal fines produced during processing are difficult to dewater and result in a lower quality product and consequent lower value. A South African coal mine experiences severe difficulties with belt filter dewatering operations due to the presence of fines reporting from the thickener underflows. Plant 2 currently handles super-fine particles of size -34 µm and has low belt filter efficiency: excessive moisture retention lowers the product quality and strains downstream processing. It was necessary to determine an alternative method for dewatering these fines. Blending of fine material with coarser material was proposed as a solution. The effect of coal particle size and layering during ultrafines belt filter dewatering was evaluated using various blends of the fine Plant 2 material with coarser Plant 1 material. The best layering arrangement of the two materials and its optimum blend required to achieve reduced filter cake moisture content was determined in practise using a vacuum filter to simulate belt filtration. A blend of the two materials gave improved dewatering efficiency for the belt filters compared with that of the Plant 2 material alone. The best layering configuration was with Plant 2 material at the bottom and Plant 1 material on top. The optimum blend for industrial applications comprised 48% fines from Plant 2. IntroductionFines are produced during the processing of coal. It is estimated that 2 to 3% of run-ofmine coal reports to the ultrafine portion (-100 µm) (le Roux, 2005). The particle size of coal is inversely proportional to the amount of water adsorption, so smaller particles adsorb more moisture. Moisture removal requires either mechanical processes or thermal drying: mechanical processes are less expensive, but the fines still have high moisture retention. Discarding of fines leads to economic losses, so it is essential that they be dewatered so that they can then be sold as a product: fines need to be treated for both resource management and conservation reasons (Kenney, 1994). Removal of free surface moisture from ultrafine coal particles using a belt filter therefore remains a process that needs to be continuously improved. Ultrafine coal originating from a thickener underflow is known to be difficult to dewater owing to factors such as filter cloth blockage and moisture retention due to clogging. Mixing of finer and coarser materials has been proposed to deliver better dewatering efficiency and improved the quality of the recycled water (Kenney, 1994)."

Palabora Mining Company is operating a copper block cave mine in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. The mine was developed in the late nineties with a target ore reserve of 220 million tonnes of carbonatite at 0.69% copper. At 30,000 tonnes per day the operation had an estimated life of mine of approximately 23 years. Cave induced open pit side wall failure occurred in late 2004 with 130 million tonnes of waste reporting to the bottom of the open pit. This failure resulted in potential sterilization and dilution of the ore reserve and subsequent reduction in life of mine. Physical and numerical modelling indicated potential losses of up to 30% of the original ore reserves. Cave Management tools based on throughput principles are utilized to manage the failed waste ingress and ensure an optimum life of mine. Extracting the maximum rate possible, as soon as draw points are commissioned, with the view of achieving the highest production in the short term, is any mining operation?s goal as more money is required sooner. This approach, of course, improves the cash flow but presents a risk in the cave propagation profile as overall draw control is compromised. At Palabora it is evident from a Mineral Resource Throughput Management (MRTM) point of view that maximum production in the short term is not the solution. If high production rates are achieved and the profile of the cave is not manage correctly, this results in failed waste reporting to draw points earlier with adverse effects on grade. This would effectively and significantly shorten Palabora?s Life of Mine. The applications of good MRTM principles are required to assist the value chain for sustained profitability. The process commenced with change management paving the way for a better understanding and a holistic view for all role players.

A risk evaluation model has been developed, that enables the quantification of expected injuries and economic losses resulting from rockfalls associated with a support system in a given geotechnical environment. This enables the comparison of different support systems based on the expected frequency of injuries and the total cost of the support system, including the expected economic losses. The model takes into consideration the variability in joint orientations and joint strength within the geotechnical environment and the variability and quality of support systems. The quantification of the benefits of other rockfall risk-mitigating strategies, such as the effectiveness of barring or monitoring, are also incorporated in the model. The risk model is described in this paper and the validation of the model and case studies are described in Part II.

This paper reviews the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Royalty Bill of 2006, identifies potential areas that require further consideration by the National Treasury and, where appropriate, offers alternatives. At its basic level a royalty regime consists of two elements: the base and the rate that must be applied to the base. Deciding on an acceptable royalty rate is a complex matter and can be done only after extensive analysis of all variables affecting the competitiveness of the regime. The proposed royalty rates are in the range of zero to five per cent and are based on sales revenue. It is argued that future investment patterns are more likely to be influenced by market cycles and commodity prices than policy events. Inevitably the current boom in the minerals sector will come to an end and the success of the proposed regime will be known only when profit margins are under pressure. Policy makers must therefore have the long run in mind when developing policies that affect the ability of industry to do business, without the need to renegotiate each time there is a change in the market. A long-run policy must be sufficiently flexible to allow for consistently fair sharing ratios and splitting of revenues between government and industry. Although broadly in line with international practice, the current version cannot be regarded as internationally competitive and efficient. In order for the royalty bill to become internationally competitive, promote beneficiation of mineral production and adequately compensate the State for the loss of a national resource, the National Treasury should heed the following main recommendations in this review: 1. Abandon the notion that each mineral product must have its own royalty rate; 2. Introduce an NSR type royalty that allows for value-addition costs to be deducted from the base; and 3. Provide for automatic relief through the use of a sliding-scale mechanism based on ability to pay, e.g. the X-Factor used in the gold mining tax formula.

In South Africa, the Bushveld platinum group metal deposits are unique in that they are the largest platinum group metal deposits in the world. These deposits occur as two distinct stratiform tabular orebodies and strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2 000 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Pillars are widely used to support the open stopes. Crush pillars are commonly used in this role, where the residual pillar strength provides the required support resistance to stabilize the stoping excavations. This paper describes the direct measurement of stress within these crush pillars, and describes the stress?strain behaviour of these pillars. These findings indicate that the measured pillar failure stress is too high. The implications of these findings are that roof damage and pillar bursting could occur, and some examples of this type of damage are shown. The paper concludes that this problem could be mitigated if the three dimensional pillar geometry were modified and the pillars were cut smaller.

Dilution of ore has a major impact on economics of a mine. The magnitude of dilution depends on mining method, stope dimensions, reef and host rock quality, wall support and drilling accuracy. The main contributing factor is the presence of very weak graphitic shear band of varying thickness in and around the reef. The reef, at Obuasi, is generally steeply dipping and open stoping is the predominant mining method. The stability of the stope walls limits the stope dimensions. Various options for allowing larger stopes for higher productivity and limiting dilution are analysed. The most economic way is to reinforce the walls with systematic cablebolt supports. This option does not only add the support cost but also requires additional cost of access development. These conflicting requirements are continually being optimised at the mine for the economics of dilution control. La dilution du minerai à un impact majeure sur l’économie d’une mine. La quantité de matériel diluant le minerai dépend de la méthode d’extraction, de la dimension des chantiers d’abattage, de la qualité du filon et de la roche mère, du support des épontes et de la précision du forage de production. Le facteur principal qui contribue à la dilution est la présence d’étroites zones cisaillées qui contiennent du graphite ayant différentes épaisseurs à l’intérieur et autour du filon. Le filon, à Obuasi, est généralement à fort pendage et la méthode d’abattage principale est par chantier long-trous. La stabilité des épontes est le facteur qui détermine la dimension des chantiers d’abattage. Differentes options ont été analysées de façon à permettre de plus larges chantiers de manière à augmenter la productivité tout en limitant la dilution. Le moyen le plus économique est de renforcer les épontes avec des cables d’acier cimentés forés de façon systématiques. Cette option n’augmente pas seulement les coûts de support mais aussi les coûts de développement. Ces besoins contradictoires sont continuellement revisés à l’opération afin d’optimiser l’économique par le contrôle de la dilution. Die Größe der Verdünnung hängt von gewinnenmethode, von den Stopemaßen, von der Reef- und Wirtsfelsenqualität, von der Wandunterstützung und von der bohrengenauigkeit ab. Der beitragende Hauptfaktor ist das Vorhandensein einer sehr schwachen graphitic Scherbandes unterschiedlichen Stärke in und um der Reef. Der Reef, bei Obuasi, taucht im allgemeinen steil ab und geöffnete Aufstemmung ist die überwiegende gewinnenmethode. Die Stabilität der Wand begrenz die Stope grösse. Verschiedene Wahlen für das Erlauben der größeren Stopes für höhere Produktivität und das Begrenzen von Erzesverdünnung werden analysiert. Die ökonomischste Weise soll die Wände mit systematischen Kableankerbolzenunterstützungen verstärken. Diese Wahl addiert nicht nur die Kosten der Unterstützung aber erfordert auch zusätzliche Kosten fuer Zugangsentwicklung. Diese kontroversen Anforderungen werden fortwährend an der Grube analysiert um die Verdünnungkontrolle zu optimieren.

The problem of direct-current plasma arc behaviour, interaction, and dynamics is considered in the context of metallurgical DC arc furnace applications. Particular attention is paid to the transient flow behaviour of arc systems. A mathematical formulation of the physics used to describe the arc system is presented, and includes the spatial and temporal evolution of fluid flow, heat transfer, and electromagnetism. Based on this formulation, a numerical model is developed using a finite difference approach on a regular cartesian grid in both two and three dimensions, with a special focus on robust stability, high resolution modelling, and high performance. A collection of results produced using the numerical model to study pilot plant-scale furnaces is then presented. These address a range of process and design variables and their effect on the numerical model?s results. Where possible, the qualitative behaviour of the model is compared to available experimental data. A number of novel effects and phenomena are seen in the dynamic behaviour of the DC plasma arc model for both single and multiple arc systems, which may lead to improved understanding, control, and manipulation of such systems where they occur in industrial applications. The main purpose of this paper is to introduce the main strategic restructuring aspects of companies that are directly (coalmines) or indirectly (companies that depend on coalmines) linked to coalmining. An attempt is also made to determine the principal factors required for the successful execution of a restructuring process in companies focused on the basic activities of coalmining, such as companies that provide supporting activities. The restructuring process exerts an influence on the whole area that relies on coalmining. So coordination of activities among the government, the local community, and the coalmine is very important. This is the major premise of this paper. The first section of the paper focuses on identifying and analysing the key factors in restructuring and a selection of key methods, drawing on past and present practice. The key factors to be considered in a model of enterprise restructuring in the coalmining sector are considered. The second section is dedicated to the actual design of the model of enterprise restructuring in the coal industry. The proposed model is based on positive experiences in the restructuring of coalmining companies in Europe, with an emphasis on Slovenia, successful approaches to crisis management in corporations, and identifying key areas in bringing about a strategic turnarounds in company operation. To support the argument for the key business areas, a brief summary of empiric findings has been included to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model and the restructuring process. The summary is based on the survey done in both Slovenian coalmining companies (especially in Velenje Coal Mine) and their subsidiaries. "Rock has been cut in the process of mining since before the invention of explosives. Today, we seek to return to cutting to reap the benefits of continuous operations for South African underground hard-rock mines, to improve speed of access to the orebody, and to improve the efficiency of mining operations.Development of new technology fits within a framework of engineering knowledge. By understanding the characteristics of the rock, the tools we use to cut it with, and the history of mining and rock cutting, we can see the genesis of the road-header, the longwall, and the continuous miner, all drag bit cutters. They have emerged as the solutions of choice for underground mining of softer materials such as coal and potash. In hard rock, the challenges are the forces required to break the rock, and the wear of the tools caused by the rock’s abrasiveness. Only disc cutters currently handle the challenges, and even then, often not economically. New materials like thermally stable diamond composite will help, as will combinations of mechanical cutters and other methods such as high-pressure water or high temperatures.It is not clear what will emerge as the consensus technique for hardrock cutting. Experience teaches that development is expensive and the market is small. Will mining companies partner with equipment developers to make the technological leap? Or will the solution come from a systems approach, not considered here?IntroductionBlasting is the dominant method of breaking rock for the purposes of mining. When used underground, blasting is part of a batch process. If rock can be cut rather than blasted, mining can become continuous, leading to process and efficiency improvements.Coal produced from underground mines is now predominantly excavated using mechanical means, but underground hard rock is still broken primarily by explosives.This paper traces the history of rock cutting, reviews the main physical processes that are or could be used, and comments on the future. It is written from the perspective of narrow-stope hard-rock mining typical of South African gold and platinum mines."

ABSTRACT: The Urft dam, the Diemel dam and the Eder dam are three old masonry damslocated in Germany. The paper describes the rehabilitation measures and the correspondingstability analyses carried out to adjust the dams to today's standards. Remedial works such as theexcavation of inspection galleries, the installation of a grout curtain with a downstream drainagescreen as well as the installation of pre-stressed permanent tendons were carried out. In all threecases the stability of the upgraded dam could be proven on the basis of finite element analyses. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die Urft-, Diemel- und Edertalsperre sind drei alte deutscheSchwergewichtsmauern aus Bruchsteinmauerwerk. Im Beitrag werden Instandsetzungsmaß-nahmen und Standsicherheitsnachweise beschrieben, die erforderlich waren, um die Staumauernan den heutigen Stand der Technik anzupassen. Hierzu wurden Kontrollgänge aufgefahren,Dichtungsschleier mit luftseitiger Dränage sowie vorgespannte Daueranker hergestellt. In allendrei Fällen konnte unter Berücksichtigung der Instandsetzungsmaßnahmen die Standsicherheit derMauer auf der Grundlage von Berechnungen nach der Methode der finiten Elemente nachgewiesenwerden. RÉSUMÉ: Les barrages de Urft, Diemel et Eder sont trois barrages-poids vieux allemandsconstruit de maçonnerie de moellon. Dans cet article, opérations de remise en état et preuves destabilité sont décrits, qui étaient nécessaires pour adapter les barrages à l'état de la techniqueactuelle. À cet effet, des galeries de contrôle étaient creusés, voiles d'étanchéité avec des drains àla face aval et tirants précontraints permanents étaient fabriqués. Dans tous les trois cas, tenantcompte des opérations de remise en état, la stabilité de la barrage pouvait être prouvée à partir decalculs selon la méthode des éléments finis.

Thirty-one years ago, African leaders met in Lagos for the drafting of the Lagos Plan of Action for the Economic Development of Africa, 1980?2000. The main objective of the plan was to increase Africa?s self-sufficiency and in this regard, the plan had a section pertaining specifically to redressing the ills of an unproductive mining and minerals industry and harnessing its potential for socio-economic development. However, if we look at the nature of this sector on the continent today, its characteristics resemble the diagnosis of the sector given in the plan back in 1980: lack of information on endowments of minerals; lack of value added in the sector; low development and use of those endowments that are not of interest to transnational corporations (TNCs); and most importantly, low contribution to socio-economic development. The primary consequence of the lack of visible benefits to African states, despite growth and development of the sector in terms of increased mining activity led by Foreign Direct Investment is that countries with mining industries are characterized by dysfunctional internal processes. Improvements in governance, monitored with indices such as those set out in the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, the Millennium Development Goals, and other such ?good governance? agendas, are being asserted. However, before we prescribe the introduction of initiatives or guidelines based upon highly subjective norms which we believe to fit this diagnosis, it is necessary to review how it is that we got to this situation that we are in today. How is it that, 31 years after the Lagos Plan of Action, we have not seen any major changes in the role the industry can play in socio-economic development, despite the vast increase in mining activity on the continent?

"This work presents the potential for improving the flotation recovery of slow-floating sulphide minerals with the use of starvation dosages of a normal dodecyl (n-C12) trithiocarbonate (TTC) co-collector, together with a sodium isobutyl xanthate (SiBX) and dithiophosphate (DTP) collector mixture.At potentials below –150 mV (SHE), addition of nC12-TTC with SiBX improves the hydrophobicity of pyrrhotite, yielding captive bubble contact angles greater than those measured for SiBX or nC12-TTC alone, suggesting a low potential synergistic effect. This synergistic effect is further studied using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, the results indicating an increase in the surface concentration of the collector species when in a mixture. Thus, nC12-TTC with SiBX may act as an immobile surface anchor to which SiBX/SiBX2 molecules bond, increasing the localized concentration of collector species.Bench-scale flotation tests using mixtures of SiBX/DTP/nC12-TTC on a platinum group element (PGE)-bearing ore from the Bushveld Complex in South Africa confirm an improved metallurgical performance at very low substitutions (approx. 5 molar per cent) of SiBX. The improved recoveries for PGE, Cu, and Ni are correlated with improvements in the flotation kinetics of their slow-floating components. IntroductionShort-chain (less than C6) xanthates are very effective for the bulk flotation of sulphides (Fuerstenau, 1982), and early work (Leja, 1968; Gaudin, 1957; Plaksin and Bessonov, 1957; Taggart, Giudice, and Ziehl, 1934) indicated that the presence of oxygen in flotation slurries is necessary for the oxidation of the xanthate collector at the sulphide mineral surface to induce hydrophobicity. Fundamental research into the chemistry and adsorption mechanisms of xanthates over the years (Finkelstein and Poling, 1977; Woods, 1976; Winter and Woods, 1973) has revealed that for iron-bearing sulphide minerals, adsorption occurs predominantly through a charge transfer process. Oxidation of the adsorbed collector to the corresponding dimer takes place if the mixed potential of the system is greater than the reversible potential for dimer formation. In oxygenated slurries the rate of adsorption and oxidation of the collector depends greatly on the substrate surfaces. For chalcopyrite (Guler et al., 2005; Leppinen, 1990; Roos, Celis, and Sudrassono, 1990) and pentlandite (Hodgson and Agar, 1989) a two-step interaction with xanthate is proposed in which the chemisorbed xanthate is further oxidized to the dimer. The initial interaction of xanthate with pyrrhotite is through physisorption where xanthate physisorbs onto positive surface sites followed by oxidation to dixanthogen (Khan and Kellebek, 2004; Bozkurt, Xu, and Finch., 1998). This process is, however, slow and increased reaction time is needed to improve flotation recovery (Buswell and Nicol, 2002)."

The PPRust North project is an expansion of existing operations on the ?Platreef? orebody in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Anglo Platinum has been mining and processing the Platreef since 1993 at the adjacent Sandsloot and Zwartfontein South open pits at a current rate of approximately 4.5 million tons per annum. This paper describes the origin of the proposed process flow sheet. A comprehensive test work programme has been conducted evaluating the best process flow sheet for the very hard and variable ore in the proposed mining area. The selection of the comminution circuit is discussed where conventional crushing and SABC options were analysed based on both extensive test work and analyses of current operational data at the existing concentrator. The application of the high pressure grinding roll technology has significant advantages?it replaces the 3rd and 4th stage crushing stages in a conventional circuit. This programme has been conducted over several years and has involved work done at site at pilot scale, internally at the company?s research facilities and externally at various sites. The on-site pilot work was completed over a 7-month period at the existing concentrator facility using a ThyssenKrupp-Polysius, ?Polycom?, 950 mm by 350 mm, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) machine. In excess of 185 000 tons of ore was processed through the unit during the trial period. This paper describes the test work programme and particularly the proposed application of high pressure grinding technology and its potential for further application in the platinum industry.

"Based on the complicated geological production conditions and abnormal strata behavior of the fully mechanized caving face No. 102 in the Xinyang Coal Mine, we analyze the breaking and forming process of distinguishing key block structures in close spaced coal seams. This analysis establishes an integrated mechanical model of these distinguishing structures. Furthermore, the horizontal force TAB generated by downward key blocks A and B is quantified, as is the Pressure PG exerted by key block B on caved gangue. Finally, the interaction mechanism is revealed. Analysis of the results using Mathematica reveal the following: 1. Both TAB and PG exhibit approximately inverse relationships to coal pillar width b; 2. TAB exhibits an approximately exponential relationship with mining height M of which the base is greater than 1; 3. PG exhibits an approximately arctangent relationship with mining height M. Combining these results with field observations, we conclude that the area in the vicinity of supports 100#–120# in the upper area of working face No. 102 is the likely zone of abnormal strata behavior. Thus, this area was classified as a key control area. Based on these results, the graded support control technique is proposed. Application of this technique in the field resulted in a reduction in the rate of hydraulic support system malfunction from 47% to 7% in the key control area. In addition, during times of periodic mining pressure, the roof caving height value never exceeded 0.3 m and the maximum spalling depth never exceeded 0.2 m. Overall, the results indicate that this new technique has markedly increased the stability of surrounding support rock material. IntroductionClose-spaced coal seams are widely distributed in China, and mining proceeds from the uppermost to the lowermost seam (Zhang et al., 2008). In the case of coal seams in close proximity, a particular set of risk factors becomes pertinent. These include disturbance of lower seams during the mining of overlying ones and the decrease in mechanical stability of lower coal seams following repeated movement of key blocks in main coal seam roofs. This inevitably results in behaviour such as heavy wall spalling and support damage to fully mechanized caving faces in lower-lying coal seams, which necessitates a significantly increase in the measures to support surrounding rock material (Zhang et al., 2010; Huang et al., 2013; Xie et al., 2013)."

Future development of kimberlite mines is now focused on mining at deeper levels. The consequences are increased difficulty and costs of the mining operations. The decisions on investments require accurate resource evaluation and quantification of the risk. In the decision process the first step consists in choosing the number of boreholes sampling the pipe relative to the level of uncertainty that can be accepted. The uncertainty in the volumes of rocks of different types can be assessed as soon as we can estimate these volumes from a given borehole layout and calculate the error by means of its variance for instance. In theory this can be achieved by using geostatistical techniques (‘transitive theory’), but in practice the calculation of the error on volumes can be achieved in very particular cases, assuming some regular sampling patterns. A different approach has been chosen based on simulations, giving maximum flexibility to reproduce the reality of the sampling procedure. The idea is to simulate the geometry of several ‘possible’ pipes with their internal geology and estimate them by kriging. Several experimental errors are obtained on which risk analysis can be performed. The aim is to find a feasible method to perform the simulations with reasonable chance to correctly represent the reality, without data on the pipe extension. The methodology applied is based on some hypotheses that can be assessed by the geologist as well as by the geostatistician. The procedure assumes a geological model based on current knowledge including appropriate geostatistical variation. What make these simulations specific and powerful in this case comes from the fact that the boundaries between the different rock-types can be simulated using a transformation of the real 3D space into a 2D space defined by means of polar coordinates. Ultimate transformations to account for smoother variations with morphological transformations allow the generation of realistic pipe geometries on which sampling pattern can be used to evaluate the estimation errors. By estimating the simulated pipe geometries with different boreholes layouts a risk curve expressing the uncertainty in the volumes of the different rock-types versus the number of holes can be developed.
