A more effective method of fracturing and chipping the formation is necessary to significantly increase the productivity of blasthole drilling with a roller cone bit. The conventional rotary blasthole bit engages the formation and initiates spalls, chipping and fractures in the formation at a rate dependent on the amount of pull down force applied by the drill. The rotary speed of the drill increases the number of fractures and creates drilled chips that are removed from the hole by the air circulation. An engineering project was motivated to develop a low pressure, low impact downhole percussion hammer to provide an overstrike force to a blasthole bit, in addition to the conventional pull down force and rotary speed. The objective of the project was to utilize existing rig air packages in the range of 50-110 psig and provide an overstrike force to the bit in the range of 1100-1500 impacts per minute. Laboratory testing performed on Barre granite achieved, on average, a 40% improvement in rate of penetration. This performance has been confirmed in actual blasthole drilling in copper and iron ores mines. During the testing phase, additional unexpected benefits have also been realized.

Your assessment of the minerals business. The global mining industry is strong. I am convinced it will continue meeting the mineral needs of the world population for the foreseeable future. Two developments have greatly enhanced the industry’s ability to produce low-cost minerals. Technological innovations have resulted in increased productivity. And there has also been a dramatic expansion of the number of favorable countries in which to explore and mine. Capital expenditures have flowed to the low-production-cost mines and development projects as well as to the exploration projects and stable countries having the best potential for valuable mineral discoveries.

The Fairmount Minerals, Inc., Maiden Rock underground sand mine historically delivered air to ventilate diesel-powered equipment at its working faces through high-resistance, 15-inch-diameter PVC distribution lines. In support of plans for expanded production, three new, low-resistance ventilation design alternatives were analyzed. The study determined that adequate ventilation for expanded production was possible with various commercially-available, high-volume/low-pressure fans combined with a systematic layout of control structures. The recommended re-design was implemented in 2001, resulting in a significant increase in flow volumes and a noticeable improvement in the mine environment.

"The United States coal mining industry is currently experiencing a decline in both demand and commodity price while facing implementation of more stringent air and water pollution regulations. Company profits have decreased significantly, forcing several major companies to declare bankruptcy. The industry was required to adapt to survive. Many of these companies have adjusted by abandoning mines; the last two decades have seen a drastic decrease in the number of mines. To discover the primary causes of this downturn, three major aspects must be studied: properties of abandoned mines, commodity history and regulatory impact. Trends since 1994Each year, U.S. coal mines are required to submit data on a variety of categories to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). This data include administrative records, production values and information regarding the attributes of the mined material and the mine itself. Each year since 1996, EIA has released a report summarizing the data from two years prior. Additionally, MSHA maintains a database containing a collection of all the most current data. These resources are the primary sources for the figures included in this article. There are several items to note regarding this data:1. The EIA reports from 2016 and 2017 were not released at the time of writing this report.2. The MSHA data set is actively maintained as information is provided. This means the data for 2016 is from June 27, 2016 and data for 2017 is from Aug 24, 2017. All other points represent the end of-year values.3. Each of the figures only includes data pertaining to active mines. EIA defines active mines as both active and temporarily idled mines, and inactive mines as nonproducing and abandoned mines. MSHA separates all four into separate categories, though this paper combines the MSHA values according to the EIA definition for the purpose of comparison."

As the popularity of precast concrete segmental linings for tunnels is growing in North America, some problems related to grouting of, and near, these linings are starting to appear. The installation of a segmental lining behind a TBM requires that the annular space around the lining be quickly filled with grout to prevent collapse of the ground. In practice, the filling of the annulus is frequently delayed and takes place a distance behind the machine typically via grout ports centrally located in the segments. If partial collapse of the annulus has occurred, it may become necessary to use higher grouting pressures in an attempt to distribute the grout. There have been several occasions where these increased pressures have caused damage to the tunnel linings. Similarly, compaction grouting adjacent to a tunnel lining can cause damage. This paper quantifies the effects of such grouting on a typical precast lining.

Dry separation was the predominant method of coal cleaning in the United States from the 1930s to 1980s. The application peak of dry separators for cleaning raw coal was in 1965, when about 23.1 Mt of cleaned bituminous coal was produced. The main advantage of dry coal cleaning is the elimination RIWKH GHZDWHULQJ VWDJHV DQG VLJQL¿FDQWO\ UHGXFHG moisture in comparison to wet processing. In addition, developed dust control systems have made dry cleaning method an environmentally friendly process. The largest air-based coal cleaning plant was built in Pennsylvania in 1968 and could clean 1,272 t/h of raw coal sized smaller than 19 mm. This was followed by a decline in dry coal cleaning to less than 3.6 Mt in 1988. The San Vicente to 2nd Aqueduct Pipeline?Tunnel project is a raw water conveyance tunnel linking the San Vicente Reservoir (SVR) to the 2nd Aqueduct Pipeline via Rancho Penasquitos Pressure Control Facility (RPPCF). This 58,230 lf long tunnel will be 8.5? final ID, and has four points of construction access. The job is classified into 6 Reaches of tunnel, identified by the dominant geology within the reach. This paper will focus on Reach 3, specifically the measures necessary to drill and blast a 550 lineal foot section of granitic rock tunnel immediately in front of an open face digger shield.

Coal mines in the eastern US often use sloped shafts as production beltways for ore removal, as means of access for supplies, and for ventilation. These structures are usually completed with the help of a contractor. In late 2011, Frontier-Kemper Constructors was engaged to build a slope for a coal mine in southern Indiana. Although the site was located in familiar Illinois basin formations, the geology proved to be very difficult. This paper describes some of the challenges faced during excavation of this slope and the methods used to overcome them, including changing the method from conventional drill and blast to cutting with a continuous miner.

The Antamina Mine is located in the mountainous region of the Ancash Department of Peru at an elevation of approximately 4200m.The 120 km main access road crosses the headwaters of numerous high-value trout streams and is adjacent to pristine lakes, some of very high ecological and scenic value. In addition, the mine discharges mine water and tailings supernatant to the Antamina and Ayash watersheds. These streams provide the primary water supply for irrigation by local residents and provide excellent fishery habitat. The rock walls and earthen diversions constructed by historic and current indigenous residents of Peru are world-renowned and local residents continue this tradition, passed down from the Inca Civilization, for both agricultural purposes and water distribution. The key elements of sustainable development – economic, environmental and social development have been incorporated into Antamina’s sustainable development program through integration of indigenous knowledge and capabilities into enhanced storm water, erosion reduction and sediment control systems. Examples of incorporating indigenous technologies and knowledge into cost-effective and environmentally sound environmental controls are:(1) placement of rock walls on steep terrain to reduce slope length and erosion, (2) installation of rock walls (porous rock check dams) within elongated sediment ponds to increase detention time, (3) construction of rock-lined ditches to convey clean water (4)use of rock walls, with or without geotextile, to function as a seep berm, and (5) appropriate selection and usage of native Andean species for protection of canals and sediment ponds, and steep slopes.

For nearly two decades, MINExpo International has held the title to the biggest show in mining. The 2012 MINExpo is expected to be the biggest yet, with nearly 1,800 exhibitors rolling out the newest equipment and services across 12 halls. From September 24 to 26 in the Las Vegas Convention Center, MINExpo will present the newest in everything from automation and robotics to safety and communications equipment to reclamation services, and much, much more. The last MINExpo, in 2008, had nearly 38,500 visitors. The show?s sponsor, the National Mining Association, expects this year will be even bigger, with more than 40,000 visitors over three days. Twenty talks on the issues facing mining today are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, but the real action will happen out on the floor. That?s where ultra haul trucks big enough to carry as much as 363 t (400 st) of rock will be assembled next to underground loaders able to lift more than 20 t (22 st) in one scoop. Caterpillar, Komatsu, Liebherr, Sandvik, Atlas Copco: all the big names in mining equipment will be there. Their massive earthmoving equipment and mining machines are the centerpiece of the show. Preassembly for the largest pieces begins on August 6, 2012.

For many tunneling, deep shaft and deep excavation projects ground freezing is one of the best if not the only technique available to create a watertight and load bearing temporary support system in soft ground conditions. When appropriate attention is given to the details of the ground freezing system design, ground freezing is a very safe method and is economically viable with competing techniques and combinations of techniques. Recent innovative uses of the technique in Europe are highlighted in this paper and compared with current uses in North America.

Crocidolite is a well known causative agent for mesothelioma. Studies have shown that the pathogenicity of the fiber from different mines varies considerably and it has been postulated the parameter that appears most likely to account for this variation is fiber width. Epidemiological studies have shown that ‘thin’ fibers from mining areas of Western Australia and the Cape Province, in South Africa are associated with a high mesothelioma risk while exposure to ‘thick’ asbestiform amphibole fiber of the same fiber type are associated with little or no mesothelioma risk. This study is concerned with ‘thick’ Bolivian crocidolite but similar findings also probably explain the paucity of mesotheliomas in the Finnish anthophyllite, South African amosite and African Transvaal crocidolite mines. The findings from the present study suggest the incidence of mesothelioma in the three major cities of Bolivia is not significantly elevated above background even though Bolivian crocidolite has been used for the past 60 years commercially and residentially in all three cities. Although some cases of mesothelioma may have been missed due to a failure to reach hospital or a shortened natural lifespan, mesothelioma generally occurs after the age of 50, we cannot tell precisely the extent to which these were confounding. We suggest the most likely explanation for the lack of mesotheliomas despite the large populations at risk from the long and extensive residential and commercial use of crocidolite containing products, is related to an increased fiber width distribution and a concomitant reduction in the ‘Stanton fiber size’ fraction.

LKAB’s Kiruna Mine, located in northern Sweden, produces about 24 Mton of iron ore yearly using sublevel caving. For efficiency, the mine must deliver planned quantities of three ore products. We use mixed integer programming to schedule Kiruna’s operations, specifically, which production blocks should be mined, and when they should be mined to minimize deviations from planned production quantities while adhering to mining restrictions (e.g., sequencing). A new production block database and a well-formulated mixed integer programming model dramatically reduce the size of the original problem; in less than ten minutes we generate five-year schedules with time fidelity of months.

"Float dust deposits in coal mine return airways pose a risk in the event of a methane ignition. Controlling airborne dust prior to deposition in the return would make current rock dusting practices more effective and reduce the risk of coal-dust-fueled explosions. The goal of this U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health study is to determine the potential of open-air water sprays to reduce concentrations of airborne float coal dust, smaller than 75 µm in diameter, in longwall face airstreams. This study evaluated unconfined water sprays in a featureless tunnel ventilated at a typical longwall face velocity of 3.6 m/s (700 fpm). Experiments were conducted for two nozzle orientations and two water pressures for hollow cone, full cone, flat fan, air atomizing and hydraulic atomizing spray nozzles. Gravimetric samples show that airborne float dust removal efficiencies averaged 19.6 percent for all sprays under all conditions. The results indicate that the preferred spray nozzle should be operated at high fluid pressures to produce smaller droplets and move more air. These findings agree with past respirable dust control research, providing guidance on spray selection and spray array design in ongoing efforts to control airborne float dust over the entire longwall ventilated opening. IntroductionCoal mining processes produce airborne dust that naturally deposits on the floor, roof and ribs of mine airways. These fine dust particles, termed float coal dust when smaller than 75 µm in diameter, are deposited in the return entries of coal mines and can be reentrained by pressure waves induced by methane-air explosions (Rice et al., 1911; Nagy, 1981; U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), 2006). These particles are also those most likely to participate in coal-dust-fueled explosions, which can potentiate and propagate explosions resulting in extensive damage. In order to meet compliance requirements of at least 80 percent incombustible content in the composition of material deposited in mine entries (U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), 2016), coal mines apply an inerting agent, specifically, rock dust (Harris et al., 2009). Should methane be present in the mine atmosphere, the required fraction of incombustible content is further increased by 0.4 percent for each 0.1 percent methane. The removal of airborne float coal dust (AFCD) prior to deposition is an approach intended to make current rock dusting practices more effective by increasing the proportion of inert material to combustible material, resulting in a lower risk of coal-dust-fueled explosions."

The Chambers Creek Interceptor Sewer Tunnel project consisted of 2-1/2 miles (4 kilometres) of nominal 9-foot (2.7-metre) O.D. tunnel driven through predominantly glacially overridden soils. Mole-Collucio Construction Company initially elected to drive the entire tunnel with a Lovat TBM. However, this machine could not control the fast raveling ground conditions which developed when the TBM encountered sands overlying very dense, hard glacial till or boulders. As a result, a shield and digger machine was brought in for a 1700-foot (518-metre) long segment. Pumped wells spaced roughly 50 to 125 feet (15 to 38 metres) apart were utilized to dewater about two-thirds of the alignment during construction. Initial support consisted of steel ribs and wood lagging, with a final lining comprised of pre-cast concrete pipe segments grouted in place.

Eighteen coarse taconite tailings samples were collected in 2000-2001 from five western Mesabi Range taconite (iron ore) operations located in northern Minnesota, i.e., EVTAC, Hibbing Taconite (Hibtac), USX Minntac, Ispat Inland (Minorca), and National Steel Pellet Company (NSPC), to test their physical, geological, chemical, and mineralogical properties [Zanko, L.M., Niles, H.B., Oreskovich, J.A., 2003. Properties and aggregate potential of coarse taconite tailings from five Minnesota taconite operations, Minnesota Department of Transportation, Local Road Research Board, St. Paul, MN, Report No. 2004-06 (also as Natural Resources Research Institute technical report, NRRI/TR-2003/44)]. The goal was to assemble a body of technical data that could be used to better assess the potential of using a crushed taconite mining byproduct like coarse tailings for more widespread construction aggregate purposes, primarily in roads and high¬ways. An important part of the mineralogical assessment included X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses and microscopic (polarized light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, i.e., PLM, SEM, and TEM, respectively) evaluation of the size and shape (morphological) characteristics of potentially respirable microscopic mineral particles and fragments. Quantitative mineralogy, based on XRD analyses, showed that the dominant mineral in all samples was quartz (55-60%), followed by much smaller amounts of iron oxides, carbonates, and silicates. Specialized microscopic analyses and testing performed by the RJ Lee Group, Monroeville, PA, on both pulverized (-200 mesh, or 0.075 mm) and as-is sample composites showed that no regulated asbestos minerals or amphibole minerals were detected in the western Mesabi Range samples. A small number (26) of non-asbestos and non¬amphibole mineral cleavage fragments/mineral fibers were detected by SEM out of 1000 fields analyzed, but most were identified as min¬nesotaite and talc, silicate minerals common to the Biwabik Iron Formation. Amphibole minerals, absent in coarse tailings samples from the five western Mesabi Range taconite operations, were present in a single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample collected in 2003 for Lake County from the Cliffs Northshore operation in Silver Bay, MN. Importantly, the Superfund Method for the Determination of Releasable Asbestos in Soils and Bulk Materials [United States Environ¬mental Protection Agency (USEPA), 1997. Superfund method for the determination of releasable asbestos in soils and bulk materials, EPA 540-R-97-028, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington], as modified by Berman and Kolk [Berman, D.W., Kolk, A.J., 2000. Modified elutriator method for the determination of asbestos in soils and bulk materials, Revision 1: Submitted to the U.S. Envi¬ronmental Protection Agency, Region 8, May 23, 2000] failed to generate any protocol fibers, i.e., fibers longer than 5 µm and thinner than 0.5 µm, from either the western coarse tailings samples or the single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample. The combined findings suggest coarse tailings and other taconite mining byproducts should be treated with the same common sense safety and industrial hygiene approach practiced for all mineral-based materials that have the potential to generate respirable dust. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Soil next to an abandoned smelter near Socorro, New Mexico, has the highest Pb concentration in the clay-size fraction, although this fraction accounted for only 1 to 3 wt. % of the soil. The depth of contamination was determined in areas relatively undisturbed since the smelter was abandoned about 98 years ago. Lead concentration drops to background levels below a depth of 3 inches. A mineralogical examination of the fine-size fraction of Pb-contaminated soils revealed an absence of crystalline Pb compounds. We conclude that Pb is present either as amorphous phases or adsorbed on the surfaces of soil particles. Yet, because of the alkalinity of the soil, the movement of Pb-bearing particles controls Pb mobility, not chemical transport in solution. Plant material from the site contained elevated Pb levels that increased as the amount of Pb in the soil increased. Of the types of material tested, rabbit bush showed the greatest increase of Pb levels. Lead levels were highest in rabbit bush roots, whereas levels in creosote were highest in foliage. Levels in cactus varied. The amount of Pb due to dust incorporated in plant tissue is almost negligible compared to the amount absorbed through the plant vascular system.

Sustainable development has brought social, environmental and energy efficiency concerns together with management and governance of natural resources. Cement manufacturing, an energy- and natural resource-intensive industry, is adapting to meet sustainable development goals. Emission standards for cement plants and increasing energy costs have lead to changes in the use of natural resources and recycled materials. Utilizing pozzolans or supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) as mineral admixtures in blended cement or as a substitute for cement in concrete lowers energy costs and CO2 emissions. Although the western U.S. is rich in natural pozzolans, artificial products, particularly fly ash, have greater use as mineral admixtures. Pozzolans and SCMs have many beneficial properties, such as preventing alkali-silica reactivity, a common problem in the western U.S. Barriers exist for mineral admixtures in the cement and concrete industries because of past inconsistencies in quality or availability. New environmental regulations on the primary industries producing artificial mineral admixtures could adversely affect the quality and quantity of these materials in the future.

The feasibility of developing the Underground Science City below the Kent Ridge Park has been investigated. The primary aim of the study has been to explore the possibility of creating underground space to house a new community of research laboratories and offices. The investigation represents the first such study undertaken in Singapore for a non-military underground facility. The paper describes the geology of the Underground Science City site and illustrates the layout and plan of the Underground Science City. The geology and rock mass below the Kent Ridge Park is generally favorable for the development of an underground cavern complex. Underground Science City can be potentially developed housed in a cavern complex. Several potential development schemes are studied; with various combination of deep/shallow mined caverns of different span sizes and access options. The preferred scheme is shallow, mined room-and-pillar caverns with large spans and shaft accesses at both existing surface Science Park 1 and Science Park 2. The scheme can be potentially expanded laterally to create more underground space for new Underground Science Cities at Kent Ridge area.

Tellurium (Te) is one of the least abundant elements in the crust and tends to form minerals associated with copper, lead, zinc and iron sulfide deposits. Today, most tellurium production comes from the anode slimes and other wastes generated in metal refining. Most of the current tellurium produced in the world is used as an alloying agent in iron and steel, as catalysts, and in the chemical industry. However, future demand and production could increase because tellurium is increasingly used in solar panels and some electronic devices. Tellurium minerals are found in Au-Ag districts in New Mexico, but were not considered important exploration targets in the past. In New Mexico, tellurium is found associated with porphyry copper deposits in southwestern New Mexico and with Au-Ag veins in the Eureka, Sylvanite, Organ, Lordsburg, Steeple Rock, Wilcox, Mogollon, Chloride, Cuchillo, Hillsboro, Zuni Mountains, White Oaks, and Nogal-Bonito districts. The only tellurium production from New Mexico has been from the Lone Pine deposit (Wilcox district), where approximately 5 tons of tellurium ore was produced. Gold-tellurides are found with gold, silver, pyrite, and fluorite in fracture-filling veins in rhyolite at Lone Pine, with reported assays as much as 5,000 ppm Te. Other districts in New Mexico have potential for tellurium, but require field evaluation.
