Xanthates and dithiophosphates are the most commonly used collectors in the flotation of sulfide minerals. Other reagents such as thionocarbamates, mercaptobenzothiazoles (MBT), mercaptans and xanthogen formates occupy niche positions in industrial collector use. Over the last ten years there has been much activity by chemical companies to develop new collector compositions. The new collectors are aimed at meeting specific process needs such as recovering an increment of valuable metals, improved sulfide separations, increased flotation kinetics, and reducing reagents costs. A review of the patent literature shows that American Cyanamid (Cytec), Dow Chemical, Phillips Petroleum, Sentrachem Ltd., Henkel, Montan Chemicals and Elf Aquitaine, among others, have been active in sulfide collector research. Several companies have achieved considerable success in laboratory and plant tests of the new collectors; however, commercial acceptance for plant usage has been slow. Those most advanced have been plant tested extensively and some are in day-to-day use. The new collector types in this category are: Modified thionocarbamates, dithiophosphinates, organic sulfides, trithiocarbonates, monothiophosphates, and modified thioureas. Others such as substituted mercaptobenzothiazoles and monothiophosphinates have been tested in the laboratory. The chemistry of collectors developed in the last 10 years, their preparation, physical properties and their potential for commercial use are reviewed in this paper.

The Expert Scheduling is a new, exciting method for scheduling underground and open-cut coal mines. A key feature of the Expert Scheduler is the adoption of an expert or artificial intelligence system. The expert system makes decisions regarding the schedule, such as which area should be mined. With existing scheduling systems these choices are made by the scheduling engineer. Developing one area may be better than another if it offers better quality or lower costs. Information the engineer considers in these decisions could be; • coal tonnage and quality targets, • equipment utilisation, • mining cost, • and other practical constraints. In expert scheduling a number of experts are appointed to make these decisions. A number of mining strategies are examined for each period. Information for each strategy is evaluated by "experts" and the "best" solution adopted. The method is based on the Blackboard Techniques. With this technique information is presented to "knowledge sources” or "experts" by the Blackboard Controller for their "opinions". These "opinions" are examined by the Blackboard Controller to select the best strategy. Engineers can readily add experts to the system, and modify the weighting of experts to suit mining conditions. Using an Expert Scheduler means that many schedule op- tions can be analysed quickly with full repeatability.

To simplify programming, image analyzers commonly measure either linear intercepts or the areas of particles and grains to determine liberation based on polished section mounts. However, the concentration of minerals by flotation is based on reagents that interact with the exposed surfaces of the minerals. Thus, it is often perceived that image analyzers should measure the perimeter of the mineral of interest in the ore particles. A comparative liberation study of thirteen samples collected from a flotation plant processing a complex base metal sulfide ore showed that the liberation of the ore minerals determined by area measurements is very similar to the liberation determined by the exposed perimeters. The liberation determined by exposed perimeters is more appropriate only for those cases where the mineral texture is so complex that it is retained in the small particles generated in conventional grinding operations. INTRODUCTION The application of oil field technology to large diameter hole drilling is beginning to offer a cost effective alternative to conventional shaft sinking methods. The drilling of ventilation and small production shafts are, of course, not new. The major constraint to the drilling of large diameter production shafts has been the inability to drill holes large enough and straight enough to install and operate relatively high volume hoisting equipment. This paper discusses recent advancements in drilling technology as applied specifically to large diameter holes for use in the mining industry. The paper emphasizes the geotechnical and hydrologic considerations in assessing site conditions and their application to drilled shaft technology. The authors worked together on a recent feasibility study for a 6 m (20 ft.) diameter 975 m (3,200 ft.) drilled shaft in New Mexico. Their individual experience in drilling and geotechnical investigations related to shaft sinking is world wide. A short cut is presented where the average grade above a primary grade cutoff and its associated byproduct grade(s) are estimated by screening the primary and byproduct grades. For the primary variable, choose samples whose grades are above a cutoff of interest. Compute variograms for the subset of the primary variable. Then using this variogram, krige the blocks of interest only using the samples whose grades are above the cutoff. The next step is to screen byproduct grades by choosing byproduct samples whose associated primary grades are above the cutoff of interest. Next compute variograms for this subset of byproduct samples. Then using this variogram, krige the blocks of interest using byproduct sample grades whose associated primary sample grades are above the cutoff of interest. The results are the average grade above a primary cutoff for both the primary and the associated byproduct variables. Using two simulated primary and reference data sets a case study resulted in the screening krigings performing better than the indicator kriging approach in the first case study. A second case study had mixed results with the primary indicator approach performing better than the primary screened approach. The byproduct screened approach performed better than the byproduct indicator approach.

The major developments in fine coal processing in Australia are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on the approaches taken by various Australian coal producers to improve the recovery of the coarse size fractions (minus 0.5 plus 0.25mm) and upgrade the selectivity of flotation at ultrafine sizes (minus 0.075mm). The effects on fine coal preparation of flotation circuit changes, the influence of physical and chemical variables on coarse coal flotation and the impact of spiral concentrators and column flotation, are discussed. Reference is also made to the development of oil agglomeration technology for the treatment of fine coal refuse and some of the factors which have led to its current demise.

GENERAL BACKGROUND The first mention of the presence of bauxite in the mesozoic series of north-west Sardinia (fig. 1) is owed to Oosterbaan, a Dutch geologist, who carried out a geological survey of the area in the ninetten thirties. A more detailed study of the mesozoic series was attempted in the fifties by Pecorini and other, who concentrated particularly upon the stratigraphy of the bauxitic horizons, through examination of the various outcrops. In the sixties a pining company, Monte Amiata S.p.A., turned its attention to a section of the deposit outcropping near Olmedo and, considering it to be of some promise, carried out prospecting works consisting essentially of various trenches, some bore holes, a few adit and a. layout plan for the preparation and execution of trial exploitation. The results, although positive, did not convince the company's shareholders to continue the exploration. The potential of coal cleaning by selective agglomeration was examined for a Pittsburgh seam bituminous coal using isooctane as an agglomerating liquid. The effects of particle size, pH, degree of mixing, and dosage of isooctane on the pyrite and mineral matter removal from finely ground coals were investigated. The role of shear-enhanced-hydrophobic-association in the flocculation of fine particles was examined. The degree of liberation of pyrite from coal at different grinds was examined using an automated petrographic image analyzer. The effect of dispersant on slurry rheology during grinding was studied. The results indicate that over 95 percent of the pyritic sulfur can be removed from the coal. Final products containing less than 0.9 percent ash at a combustible recovery in excess of 90 percent have been obtained with multiple stages of cleaning.

Discrepancies in raw materials properties informed by both producer or consumer is a common problem in most areas of the industry. Commercial contracts in the mineral industry normally penalises the producer, if contaminants in the ore exceed established limits. In some situations, the supplier is penalised if the quality of the ore is below a contracted amount. Differences in lab analysis are due many sources of error, such as distinct practices used in two laboratories for sampling, preparation or analysis. Rigid contracts impose to the miner the use of rigorous quality control program and in these situations sampling plays a major role. Sampling theory provides the tools to analyse errors involved in sampling, preparation and analysis. This paper proposes a methodology to check the precision and accuracy of a given sampling protocol emphasising the application of Gy's sampling theory to broken ore. A procedure to measure the error on each step of the protocol is introduced and the results compared to the fundamental error measured by Gy's theory. The results show the applicability of the method and its relevance to audit sampling procedures aiming at error minimisation. The methodology is illustrated in a case study at a major coal producer in Brazil.

A hydraulic rock breaker was developed in Germany by Helmut Darda and uses a wedge-plug and feathers mechanism powered by a 10,000 p.s.i. power pack. During the past four years these tools have been increasingly used all over North America for secondary breaking of boulders and rock. More recently, techniques have been developed to break rock off the solid in trenches and rock emplacements where blasting is pro¬hibited or very limited. Underground operations are commencing to adopt the splitter for scaling plus including systems which can be efficiently applied to chambers and mines. Mr. Neil Duncan, who was originally scheduled to give the main part of this presentation has, during this past month accepted a position with the Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board in Calgary. The board encourages its members to take part in seminars such as this but, unfortunately, due to the heavy pressure of work, it was impossible for him to attend this conference. Mr. Duncan has, however, forwarded me his notes and suggest¬ions, and using these, combined with a slide presentation, we feel that we can quickly and clearly define the operations and application of the hydraulic splitting technique as it applies to your profession and tunnelling work. Most miners know that Latin America's major mineral areas are in the mountains of Mexico and down the backbone of the Andes in South America. These areas comprise some of the more rugged and challenging parts of the world's geography, and the risks of doing business in these areas are just as difficult as the impressive task of extracting and processing ores. However, Latin America does contain mineral deposits, some untouched and many to be discovered, that convince venturesome people that the tremendous effort required to mine them will be worthwhile. The rewards have often been adequate in the past. Hopefully, they will be in the future. Background The safest statement that can be made about Latin America is that the "ballgame is constantly changing." Here are some examples: Chile. Under President Frei in the 1960s, Chile welcomed foreign mining interests, even though the government was acquiring significant ownership interests in the big copper properties. Then, under Allende in the 1970s, the big mines were taken over and compensation was denied on various grounds including the allegation that extraordinary profits had been made that should have been taxed. After Allende, an about-face was made in policy; former owners of the expropriated mines received some compensation and new foreign investment was seriously welcomed. Two major changes occured during the last 5 years in the applications of computers. First, the cost of computer equipment decreased drastically in an era of high inflation. Second, technological breakthroughs in hardware and software have been applied successfully so that the average person can successfully utilize the computer without having to be a computer expert himself. The mining industry has recognized that computing technology has evolved to a point where it can be applied successfully to assist in improving productivity. Since equipment downtime is one of the major reasons for lost production, the Kennecott Minerals Company has developed a comprehensive maintenance information system which now assists the maintenance department in minimizing equipment downtimes. This paper discusses the primary features and functions of this system, the state-of-the-art technology that has been applied, and the benefits that resulted from using this system. Programs to support mobile equipment maintenance scheduling, which currently are under development, are reviewed and a summary of future applications is given.

A team of noise specialists from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and Joy Manufacturing attempted to evaluate an engineering noise control on a Joy longwall stageloader. The team developed and executed a test plan to evaluate the noise attenuation of the engineering control in an underground coal-mining environment. An evaluation of the long-term noise effects and durability of the engineering control were also a focus of the research effort. Pre- and postcontrol measurements consisting of a combination of worker dosimetry and task observations, tape recordings, and sound level measurements were used to evaluate the engineering control. A description of the engineering noise control, pre- and post-control sound level measurements, and an evaluation of control success is presented. In the end, no evaluation was possible due to mining practices, miner task variations, and inconclusive data.

A numerical analysis and an experiment were done on groundwater flow past a bore hole with a cylindrical obstacle at its center. Flow around the obstacle in the bore hole was studied in detail. Two dimensional governing equations to simulate this flow were written for the hydraulic head and seepage velocity in a porous medium and for the vorticity, stream function, and velocity in the bore hole. These equations were non-dimensionalized and solved by using the alternating direction implicit and successive-over-relaxation finite difference methods. Flow visualization experiments and velocity measurements in the bore hole were done with a two dimensional model composed of a porous medium. The numerical analysis procedures were validated by a comparison of numerical and experimental results. Effects of the Reynolds number and obstacle size on flow in the bore hole are clearly shown in the velocity and streamline profiles. The quantitative relation between the seepage velocity in the porous medium and the velocity of flow around the obstacle in the bore hole also were estimated.

The net acid generation (NAG) pH method is an important analytical tool that supplements static and kinetic tests for assessment of the acid generation risk of rock samples. This method is useful because it is simple, rapid and cost-effective; it combines features of the static and kinetic tests; and it can be conducted at mine assay labs. The NAG pH test is particularly effective for operational testing programs used to classify, selectively handle, and route potentially acid-generating waste rock. The NAG pH procedure is based on a 24 hour oxidation of a pulverized rock sample with hydrogen peroxide and subsequent measurement of the sample's pH. If the NAG pH is below a critical value, determined empirically, then the sample has the potential to generate acid in the field. The critical NAG pH value is typically within the range of 3 to 4.5, but the exact relationship between NAG pH and potential acid generation should be determined individually for each mine site, based on comparison with results of acid base accounting, humidity cell tests, and mineralogical analyses. Calibration and use of the NAG test for predicting ARD risk at several mines are described in this paper.

Successful implementation of computer systems deals with meeting final systems objectives and cost and schedule requirements, but the final success is dependent upon personal inter- action. This is a case history of the installation of responsibility reporting at The Anaconda Co.'s Twin Buttes operation, later to become Anamax. The study has been documented as it occurred in hopes that it will illuminate the "people" side of computer systems implementation. Systems implementation involves negotiating with people. "The cooperative approach to negotiation (Nierenberg, 1968) the approach which vostulates that all varties must come away having gained something is based on a simple but important premise. Negotiation takes place between human beings. You cannot negotiate with a computer." This is a look at the human side of a major system installation. An attempt is made to show how a reporting system enabled a company to take a new look at itself. It is also an example of statements made by Toffler (1970) in Future Shock. "As machines take over routine tasks and the accelerative thrust increases the amount of novelty in the environment, more and more of the energy of society (and its organizations) must turn toward the solution of non-routine problems. This requires a degree of imagination and creativity that bureaucracy, with its man-in-a-slot organization, its permanent structures, and its hierarchies, is not well-equipped to provide."

The prediction of underground methane emission from longwall coal faces has been extensively researched for a number of years and numerous prediction methods have been devised. Many coal mines employ sophisticated environmental monitoring equipment which generates large amounts of data including, methane concentration, air velocity and barometric pressure. Presently this information is mainly used only to indicate alarm and danger levels of the monitored data for management purposes, however, the potential uses of this data are enormous[1]. This information could be used to good effect within a production/methane emission strategy as detailed in a previous paper[2]. The paper presents a practical application of artificial neural networks to underground methane prediction. Data on methane concentration and coal production has been obtained from an underground coal mine. The data is used in a neural network architecture and forecasts of methane concentration have been obtained. The forecasts are examined and there is a discussion of the potential use of the predictions from neural networks in the field of mining production control.

This work studies the variations of the electric current caused by the application of an electric field on marble samples when they are subjected to continuously increasing mechanical stress at a constant rate up to fracture. The external electric field is applied in a direction perpendicular to the applied mechanical stress. An increase of the level of the electric current was observed when micro-damages started to occur in the samples. The increase of the electric current was approximately 14%. Consequently, the current started to decay abruptly and the sample failed. This electric current recording is compared with the corresponding electric recording without applying the external electric field (Pressure Stimulated Current technique). Both recordings show similar qualitative characteristics. The most obvious of these characteristics are that the electric current starts to develop when microcrack structures start to form due to the externally applied stress. Both recordings show a maximum in the vicinity of fracture.

This paper shows how the efficiencies of size-reduction processes depend on the mode of particle constraint and energy transfer within the comminution device: namely, whether the process consists of single-particle loading, confined-particle-bed comminution or loose- (unconstrained-) particle grinding. The relative efficiency of single-particle comminution, ball-mill grinding and particle-bed comminution in the recently invented high-pressure roll mill is evaluated by making use of the self-preserving nature of the size distributions of comminuted products. The highest energy efficiency can be achieved by utilizing a hybrid two-stage system in which the material is first ground in the high-pressure roll mill and then the ball mill.
