Miners working in underground mines where diesel equipment is used are exposed to exhaust pollutants. These include carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO,), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), hundreds of different hydrocarbons (HC) and particulate matter. Evidence from animal inhalation studies and limited epidemiological investigations have led the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to recommend that ‘... whole diesel exhaust be regarded as a potential occupational carcinogen ...’ NIOSH further stated that ‘... the excess cancer risk for workers exposed to diesel exhaust has not yet been quantified, but the probability of developing cancer should be decreased by minimizing exposure…’ The International Agency for Research on Cancer(IARC) reached a similar conclusion, saying that ‘... diesel engine exhaust is probably carcinogenic to humans.’ Before these declarations, there was insufficient evidence concerning the carcinogenicity of diesel exhaust. It was well known, though, that diesel exhaust caused less severe problems, such as headache, eye irritation and unpleasant odors. In 1988, a milestone was reached in the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulatory process. An advisory committee recommended a three-tier approach to regulating diesels used underground-approval of diesel equipment, safety and health. Diesel particulate matter may be specifically regulated. In addition, ambient air quality standards are being proposed that will establish a new standard for CO2 and lower the permissible exposure limits for the NO2, CO, SO2 and formaldehyde emissions that originate from diesels and other sources. Additional safety and emission restrictions are also proposed for diesel engines in coal mines. The goal of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) diesel engine research program is to minimize the health and safety problems associated with underground diesel equipment use. Part of this program is focused on reducing exhaust emissions from diesel-powered equipment used in underground mines.

In this paper, the results of a research study on airborne dust transport in a full scale simulated longwall face are presented. The simulated longwall face was set up in the Lake Lynn Laboratory mine of the U.S. Bureau of Mines to conduct experiments under controlled conditions. The controlled parameters in the experiments were the dust dispersion rate, dust size distribution, density of the dust, air velocity, and the rate of travel of the dust generating source. The analyses of the experimental results on mass concentrations, particle size distributions, and real-time respirable dust concentrations are discussed. There are definite spatio-temporal trends between the location of the shearer, the concentration at any location in the face, and the dust generation rates. The size-consist and density characteristics of the source dust, the air velocity in the face, and the air leakage into the gobs all affect the concentration.

Reconciliation of production information is critical to evaluating the effectiveness of predictive models that would allow for the optimization of mining operations. Whether mining open pit or underground, mine-to-mill reconciliations can be one of management's better tools for the performance of proper accounting. Such reconciliations can also be a very useful tool in evaluation and optimization. This paper proposes a set of criteria and objectives for a typical reconciliation program. This paper also presents a stepwise, logical approach to performing reconciliations and discusses the benefits associated maintaining good information. It also highlights some of the potential pitfalls involved and the methods used to avoid collecting misleading information. These issues are illustrated with an example of a model-to-mine-to-mill reconciliation program that is being implemented at an operating mine. The program involves multiple predictive models (long-term and short-term block models), feed from three open pits and one underground mine, in addition to intermediate stockpiling, for a total of 23 mill streams. This paper presents a summarized version of this reconciliation program and its initial results as implemented at Minera Michilla S.A.

Surface enhanced Raman Spectroscopy carried out in real time has been applied to identify surface species formed during gold leaching in chloride and thiosulfate media. Chloride ion is adsorbed prior to the gold dissolution potential, but its coverage is significantly diminished at the beginning of leaching. A gold chloride band is again observed when dissolution is rapid, together with bands characteristic of AuC14- ions in solution. With thiosulfate, a thin gold sulfide layer is formed slowly in the potential region where leaching occurs. At higher potentials, thiosulfate is oxidized to sulfur and sulfate, both products being identified by Raman spectroscopy.

One of the major objectives of cost analysis is to enable the manager to predict the financial outcomes of decisions. To accomplish this, the future costs and benefits of alternative courses of action must be determined. If care- fully used, information about past financial performance can be helpful in this analysis despite the fact that, by definition, financial reporting information is historical. In many cases, both revenues and costs need to be estimated for decision- making. For the production manager, additional revenue is a result of increased throughput or recovery of valuable material from the stream of mined material. A reduction in operating cost, although similar to a revenue increase in its financial impact, is estimated using slightly different techniques. Generally, the estimation of cost is more difficult than the estimation of revenue. Most cost estimates have two components: an estimate of fixed costs and an estimate of variable costs. As discussed in chapter 5, the total cost of an activity during a specified period can be expressed as: Total cost = (Variable cost per unit of activity) x (Units of activity) + Fixed cost or TC = VX+F

Historian and storyteller, Duane Smith, will be the keynote speaker at the National Mining Hall of Fame's 10th anniversary induction banquet on Saturday, Sept. 6,1997 in the Museum Convention Center at Leadville, CO.Smith is a professor of history and southwest studies at Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO. He is also an award-winning author of 28 books about the West and mining. Hall of Fame Board Chairman Richard Moolick said the induction banquet event will mark the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum's 10th anniversary in its Leadville facility, a century-old Victorian schoolhouse. Karl Elers, chairman of Battle Mountain Gold in Houston, TX, will be the master of ceremonies. He is a member of the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum's board of directors. The six inductees into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be enshrined by Thomas Falkie, president of Berwind Natural Resources of Philadelphia, PA. He is also chairman of the Mining Hall's board of governors. The six inductees will join 132 mining greats who were previously honored. The black-tie (optional) banquet will be highlighted this year by guests who prefer to don 1890s dress for the occasion in the old silver-mining boomtown. A cocktail reception and open house will precede the banquet, with tours of the district and special events to follow on Sun- day, Sept. 7.

Arafertil's oxidized ore presents barite grades that oscillate between 5 and 12%. The barite separation plays a major role in the production of apatite concentrates for the manufacturing of phosphate fertilizers. The selectivity, via flotation, in the system barite-apatite is inherently difficult due to the similarity of the physical/chemical characteristics of these minerals. The evaluation of the relevant aspects of this separation was performed based on the determinations of the electrical surface charge of barite and apatite, the abstraction isotherms of cetyl-stearyl sodium sulfate and fatty acids soaps for barite and apatite, microflotation in a modified Hallimond tube, and flotation tests in a batch column. The results showed that the adsorption of cetyl- stearyl sodium sulfate occurs preferentially onto barite, in comparison with apatite. On the other hand, the rice bran oil soap presents similar adsorption levels onto both barite and apatite. The cetyl-stearyl sodium sulfate was selective as a barite collector in the presence of apatite, a fact that was not observed in the case of rice bran oil soap.

INTRODUCTION Detailed investigation of a 60-ft-deep excavation in a mixed profile of sands and stiff clay was performed by the University of Illinois for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (METRO). The work was coordinated through DeLeuw, Cather and Co., the General Engineering Consultant of METRO. Instrumentation was concentrated in a portion of braced excavation for the Gallery Place Station near the intersection of 7th and G Street. The early construction date, the 60 ft depth of cut, and the proximity of large buildings formed the basis for selection of this site as the focal point of observation and measurement. A history of lateral and vertical displacement is provided wherein movements which occurred during excavation to the full depth of cut and, subsequently, during station construction and the removal of braces are described in detail. Observations of preloading and the consequent brace loads and wall displacements are described. The effect of temperature change on brace loads is discussed and the measured apparent earth pressure for the 60-ft cut is provided. The paper discusses the relationship of lateral displacements of the cut wall to the construction procedure, and compares the lateral wall displacement with both lateral and vertical movement in the surrounding soil mass. Based on observed movement, the method by which displacement was predicted for a nearby 82-ft-deep excavation is described. The performance of the 82-ft-deep excavation has been summarized elsewhere (2).

Two different groups of mechanisms have been considered in the past to explain the effects of chemical additives on grinding. While one group of explanations is based upon alterations of surface and mechanical properties of the individual particles, the other group depends mainly on the arrangement of particles and their flow in suspensions. In this paper some of the past work on grinding aids is reviewed and attrition grinding of a commercially important ceramic material, zirconia (stabilized with yttria) with polyaaylic acid as grinding aid, is studied in order to determine the effect of the aid on the ground product itself. It was observed that even though polyaaylic acid did cause a drastic decrease in the viscosity of the pulp, it did not have any major effect on the grinding of zirconia at least up to 2000 ppm and only minor detrimental effect above it. Importantly, complexation by the polymer was found to cause extraction of yttrium into solution with possibly significant changes in the surface chemical composition of the product.

The compressive strength of coal, and its variation within and between seams, was determined for four Pennsylvania coal seams (Pittsburgh, Sewickley, Upper Kittanning and Lower Kittanning). Large coal blocks were obtained from 12 coal mines (three mines per seam) and cut into 50-mm (2-in.) cubes using a low-speed saw. The cubes were tested for compressive strength, with the results used to compute actual pillar strength. Using the tributary area approach, the pillar stress was determined. The pillar stress and strength data were used to calculate the factor of safety against pillar crushing for each mine. The cube strength was also correlated with various physical and chemical coal properties (density, percent absorption, percent ash, percent sulfur and percent carbon) to see if any strong relationships exist. The coal's mean compressive strength varies from 9.1 MPa (1326 psi) in the Lower Kittanning seam to 37.8 MPa (5480 psi) in the Pittsburgh seam. Between different seams the pillar strength varies from 29.5 MPa to 48.1 MPa (4282 psi - 6981 psi). Although coal strength appears to be weakly related to carbon content, no relationship was found between compressive strength and other physical or chemical properties. Since the values for the safety factor against pillar crushing generally exceed the recommended value of two, the existing pillars are mostly overdesigned. This implies that an accurate assessment of coal compressive strength could result in the use of smaller pillars and, thus, increased coal production.

The major goal of this study is to decrease iron content in wet-process phosphoric acid. Reducing the amount of post-precipitated sludge in the acid is another important objective in this investigation. In order to achieve these goals, research efforts have focused on bench scale testing of an iron-chelating reagent to remove iron from phosphoric acid produced from South Florida high-iron and -magnesium phosphate concentrate, and plant testing using freshly produced concentrated acids for reducing the post- precipitated sludge. The data obtained in the above studies suggest that the addition point of the precipitating reagent is very important, as the precipitated iron compound has higher solubility at higher P2O5 concentrations. Up to 60% Fe2O3 removal efficiency is achieved depending on the amount of the reagent, concentration of acid used, and operating conditions. The addition of precipitating reagents to freshly concentrated phosphoric acid leads to a decrease of up to 84% in sludge volume percentage depending on acid type and clarification conditions. Decreasing the volume percentage of the sludge facilitates acid handling as well as decreases the adherent water- soluble P205 leading to lower total P2O losses.

Introduction I will address two important alternative energy resources, solar and geothermal, with emphasis on their potential application in electric power generation. As a result of this presentation, I hope to leave you with a realistic view of the principal technology options that are being developed or that are available. Solar Types of Collection In terrestrial solar applications, the biggest challenge is to find ways of collecting the sun’s relatively low intensity energy so it can be converted economically to useful thermal or electric energy. Fig. 1 shows that there are both natural and technological ways of collecting solar energy. In nature we find that solar energy aids in the production of biological growth, rainfall, and wind, all of which can, in one form or another, be put to use in the production of heat or electric power. The sun’s rays also are collected and stored naturally in the form of heat in the upper layers of the ocean which can be put to use in the production of electric energy by means of ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) approaches. On the technological side, the sun’s rays can be intercepted by materials that directly absorb and convert its energy to low-grade heat, or by mirrors or lenses that focus the rays onto a material to produce high-temperature heat. The higher temperature systems can be used to drive efficient heat engines in the production of electricityy. The sun’s rays also can be collected on photosensitive materials, in either a direct or concentrated form to generate DC electricity directly. Each year, US coal cleaning plants landfill or impound millions of tons of high-quality, fine-sized coal. This coal is not only difficult and expensive to capture during cleaning, but, if captured, can pose serious materials handling problems. The GranuFlow. Technology was developed and patented by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to address these problems. GranuFlow involves the addition of a coal binding agent such as an asphalt or heavy oil emulsion to coal to reduce moisture, dusting, and freezing and to improve the flow properties of the coal in bins and chutes (1, 2, and 3). When the emulsion is added before mechanical dewatering, the binding agent causes the formation of fine-sized coal agglomerates that dewater better than untreated coal. In addition, the binding agent increases the capture of ultra-fine coal in screen-bowl centrifuges. Previous work by DOE has also demonstrated that such treatment results in a significant reduction in dustiness and a reduced potential to freeze. To address concerns about the handling and combustion characteristics of GranuFlow treated coal, DOE performed a pilot-scale pulverization and combustion test (4). No problems were encountered during pulverization or combustion, and use of this fuel in a p.c. boiler was found to be feasible from a technical perspective. CQ Inc. has an exclusive license from DOE to market this technology and is currently performing a series of commercial demonstrations to determine if GranuFlow is both technically and economically viable.

A Norbridge review of 25 top mining companies highlighted financial problems for many firms. To better understand these results, Norbridge benchmarked 17 mining companies to understand the problems that companies face, the methods being used to improve performance, and the results that have been achieved. The study indicates that many mining companies in three sectors-coal metals, and non- metallic minerals-have implemented new strategies to improve performance. Many of these strategies supplement traditional initiatives with two types of process improvement efforts, facility-specific and company-wide, to help generate performance gains. The study compares the results of these strategies in each sector. INTRODUCTION imes are tough in the mining industry. Norbridge reviewed financial results of 25 top mining companies for the past 2 years-seven coal companies, twelve metals companies, and six non-metallic minerals firms.*The study found that 40% lost money in 2002, and * Coal companies include Alliance Resource Partners, Arch Coal, Consol Energy, Massey Energy, North American Coal, Peabody Energy and Westmoreland. Metals producers include Barrick Gold, Cleveland-Cliffs, Coeur d'Alene, Falconbridge, Freeport McMoran, Grupo Mexico, Inco, Newmont Mining, Noranda, Phelps Dodge, Placer Dome, and Teck Corninco. Non-metallic firms include Florida Rock, IMC Global, Martin Marietta Materials, Oglebay Norton, PotashCorp and Vulcan Materials. Subsidence induced innerburden shearing and stress fields, whether active or passive, frequently contribute to significant ground control failures in overlying seams. In this paper proven multi-seam technology is used on upper seams to forecast and quantify the magnitude and severity of damage and the increased mining risk due to interaction. Increased upper seam ground control problems are demonstrated using hazard mapping which provides a viable technique for utilizing damage predictions in design.

It is a pleasure to introduce this session on frontier technology and present an overview of pyrometallurgical technology, as it is today and where it may be heading. While there have been many advances in hydro-metallurgical processing in our times, pyrometallurgy has not been still, and more novel processes have been introduced in the last four decades than in all previous ages of humanity put together. As a result, pyrometallurgy has managed to remain the predominant mode of producing metals from ores and concentrates: over 95% of the world primary metals production, including iron, manganese, copper, lead, chromium and nickel, is obtained via the high temperature route. Some of the characteristics of pyrometallurgy, along with the corollary industrial advantages are shown in [Table 1]: [ ] On the other hand, the necessity of operating at high temperatures also entails special problems and it is unfortunate that research on how to overcome these problems has not, in most cases, kept up with the development of these wonderful novel processes. We shall first speak of the important developments in pyrometallurgy which have brought us to the current state of the technology, and subsequently on the problems still encountered and the kind of research and development that will be necessary to bring pyrometallurgy on a par with other late twentieth-century technological developments.

Mine fires have always been of great concern to mining engineers and their behavior has been studied for a long time. Although an abundance of observations exist, no satisfactory mathematical model for their interpretation and extrapolation has become known. The paper presented here tries to close this gap, making use of the laws of chemical kinetics, energy and momentum conservation. To overcome the mathematical difficulties, the fire zone is axially divided into segments and radially into sections, each one with an extension of only a few inches. Conditions in segments and sections are updated in time intervals of one second or less. To solve the large number of resulting equations, a numerical solution is performed. The model has so far been tried on timber fires. It confirms experimental observations on the ignition phases and equilibria of these fires.

Geochemical returns from commercial analytical laboratories are often delayed because of postal and other bulk distribution inefficiencies. Consequently, minerals exploration programs are handicapped due to insufficient time for treatment, analysis, and diagnosis of the data. The minerals industry lacks a system for rapid transmission of geochemical data which allows immediate entry into statistical and plotting routines. Over the past three years, Houston International Minerals Corporation (HIMCO) has developed a computer-based system to receive, treat, and distribute geochemical data. In the past two years, Bondar-Clegg (Denver) and Chemex (Vancouver) have developed systems to transmit' data directly to HIMCO via the world-wide Boeing Computer Services (BCS) network. The main benefits to HIMCO have been ten less days for reporting turnaround, ten less days for keypunching, less data handling, accuracy. The benefits to the laboratories have been improved in-house data management, reporting, and HIMCO's increased geochemical activity.

On May 15 and 16, 1999, a mine ventilation survey was performed in the 705-m- (2,312-ft-) deep Cayuga Mine, Cargill Salt Division, Lansing, NY. The purpose of the survey was to develop a numerical model of the existing ventilation system and to perform a computer simulation study for long-term environmental and ventilation planning. Because the natural ventilation pressure (NVP) has significant effects on the ventilation system at the Cayuga Mine, there was a need to assess the NVP acting in the mine. Due to the ventilation arrangements in the Cayuga Mine, the authors decided to use the direct-measuring method to determine the NVP by measuring differential pressure across the automatic fan door. This difference in pressure was measured immediately after the fan was stopped and the automatic door was closed to stop the flow throughout the entire mine. To show seasonal changes in NVP, two additional measurement for NVP were performed, one on Aug. 22, 1999, during the hot (summer) season, and another on Feb. 6, 2000, during the cold (winter) season. Following the driving of each new section of tunnel, a prompt decision is required regarding the type and extent of primary support to control convergence and prevent ground failure. Sometime thereafter, the effectiveness of the in-place support must be evaluated over the entire length of excavation. It is therefore extremely desirable to have available a lightweight, portable, easy to install and interpret, cost effective monitoring system to assist with these ground control functions. Such a system can be assembled based on the acoustic emission (or microseismic) technique. This monitoring technique uses a piezoelectric transducer to detect subaudible noises associated with deformation of and/or crack propagation in the soil or rock being monitored. After detection, the signals are then amplified, filtered and electronically counted to provide a quantified assessment of the stability of the structure. In the simplest sense, the absence of emission, or counts, signifies no deformation and thus stability. Conversely, the occurrance of counts signifies instability to varying degrees. The higher the count rate, the greater the instability and the need for immediate or additional support. Described in this paper is an overview of the acoustic emission (microseismic) method, details of its use in a laboratory study measuring convergence and stand-up time in soil, and the behavior of rock samples under similar stress conditions. Field use of the method is recommended for ground control monitoring in tunnels, and some suggestions regarding monitoring procedure are presented.
