Electrical Vertical Sounding (EVS) profiling has proven to be a valuable tool to set the alignment and guide the design of a 17 km-long, 4.7m diameter water-conveyance tunnel in the Peruvian Andes at an altitude of 4,260 m. EVS profiling helped determine where to locate boreholes, and reduce the amount of drilling to 1,200 m of vertical and inclined boreholes. EVS profiling allowed the designer to identify and verify by drilling the existence of zones with difficult tunneling conditions that were avoided by realigning the tunnel. The rock quality was checked by drilling and a combined scheme of excavation by TBM and conventional drill and blast technique was developed for the final design.

The United States continued to depend on imported bauxite during 1995. Domestic bauxite mine production remained at about the same level as in 1994. It amounted to less than 1% of total world production. All of it was used for nonmetallurgical products, such as abrasives, chemicals, proppants and refractories. Metallurgical grade bauxite was imported from 12 countries. Principal suppliers for this 10 Mt (11.1 million st) of ore were Guinea (39%), Jamaica (35%), Brazil (17%) and Guyana (8%). The average value of imports, c.i.f. US ports, was $31/t ($28/st). Calcined refractory-grade bauxite imports totaled235 kt (259,000 st). It had an average value of $112/t($102/st) c.i.f. US ports. China supplied 61%, Guyana30%, Hong Kong 4% and France 3%. Imports of other grades of calcined bauxite, primarily for the abrasives market, totaled 259 kt (286,000 st).They were supplied by China (59%), Greece (20%), Brazil (14%) and Australia (6%). The average value was$74/t ($67/st) c.i.f. US ports.

Using mines in Canada, Boart Longyear, a leading provider of drilling services and products, has put its Stage 3 Coring Bit to the test and each time the bit has passed the test with great success. After more than a year in the field at a major mine operation in Sudbury, Canada, the Stage3 coring bit broke life records to become recognized as the most productive design in the industry. In addition to the proven advantage seen in regular bit life increases of as much as 300 percent in some cases, the design is quickly being recognized for its cost-saving operational impact. In Sudbury, the mine operation realized actual cash savings of more than C$45,000 within an eight-month period by making the switch to Stage3 bits. For years, the Sudbury Basin team has relied on the Alpha Extended Crown bit with the Express Waterway geometry option, ordering approximately 500 units per year. This 07 COM ECEX configuration performed well in medium-hard, non-abrasive to ultra-hard, non-abrasive formations with an average bit life of 150 m (490 ft). While satisfied with the performance of the Alpha Ex-tended Crown, the team agreed to put the new Alpha Stage3 to the test. Boart Longyear?s field engineers supplied five drill sites with Alpha Stage3 bits in a 07 COM configuration. After thoroughly testing the Stage3, the results were clear. Even with the well-known performance and versatility offered by the previously preferred configuration, the Stage3 set a new standard of bit performance. The new bit maintained its cutting edge for up to three times longer than the Alpha Extended Crown, a significant performance increase when compared to the 07 COM ECEX.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL), investigated a means to evaluate the potential impact of surface conditions above underground mines on emergency response activities. Recent events have highlighted the need to conduct critical emergency operations on the surface above underground work areas. Accessibility and usability of the surface, such as the ability to drill holes or deploy seismic monitoring or through the earth communications systems, are an important consideration for emergency response planning. This paper identifies critical surface conditions such as: surface waters, valley fill, highways, railroads and significant structures that must be considered in emergency response planning and in the conduct of emergency operations as they relate specifically to the seismic detection of trapped underground miners. Results of case studies indicate a need to consider the impact surface conditions may have on emergency response capabilities.

Magnetic surveying and map production is well established in land based mineral exploration. Magnetic data are routinely used to map geology in covered terrains, to estimate the depth to basement in overburden covered areas, and to identify altered zones, mineralization, bedding attitudes, and fault networks both regionally in map view, and through interpretation to depth in 3D. Best practices for magnetic survey methods and magnetic interpretation exist in all areas of land based geophysical survey methodology - mineral exploration, hydrocarbon exploration, geological mapping, archeological mapping, and in military applications. At sea, and particularly under the sea, sophisticated magnetic surveys are being done, but it can be argued that these are primarily in niche applications, for example in naval mine-hunting and UXO applications. Magnetic data is not normally collected on AUVs and ROVs conducting mapping and hydrographic survey operations. OFG has developed physical and mathematical calibration routines so that magnetometers can be mounted directly onto AUV and ROV bodies where significant heading errors and magnetic gradients exist. This simplifies the routine deployment of magnetometers on AUVs and ROVs for mineral exploration and other magnetic survey applications without the need for towed bodies, ungainly mounting frames, or degaussing of the survey equipment. Our experience shows that magnetometers can be operated routinely on AUVs and ROVs and that with careful processing useful maps can be produced routinely at low cost.

Introduction Atmospheric fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) is an improvement over coal-fired boiler design. It offers several advantages over conventional boilers. AFBC can meet sulfur and nitrogen oxide emission regulations without the need for add-on flue gas treatment equipment. The relatively low combustion temperature inhibits ash melting, thus reducing slagging and fouling that can in turn increase a boiler's fuel flexibility. AFBC process The fluidized bed boiler that operates at atmospheric pressure on the fire side (AFBC) is relatively simple and no different in purpose from those pulverized coal boilers used by utilities today. Fluidized bed boilers can generate steam at the pressure and temperature needed by modern steam turbines. Only the firing system is different. In fluidized bed combustion, the fuel can be almost any coal or waste fuel. It is burned in the presence of a bubbling bed of limestone. Air is forced through the bed at a velocity sufficient to support the weight of the bed particles. When the bed is fully fluidized, it bubbles like a boiling liquid. Although the burning coal makes up less than 1% of the fluidized bed, all the bed particles are heated quickly by the turbulence. The calcium in limestone reacts with sulfur dioxide produced in coal combustion to form calcium sulfate in a dry solid state. In this way, sulfur emissions regulations can be met without installing flue gas desulfurization equipment. Boiler tubes submerged in the bed absorb heat directly from the turbulent solids. The heat converts water in the tubes to steam or superheats the steam. Because of the intimate contact of the boiler tubes with the fluidized bed, heat transfer is highly efficient. Consequently, less boiler tubing surface is needed to generate the same amount of steam as in a comparable pulverized coal boiler. The optimum temperature for sulfur capture is relatively low, about 815°C (1500°F) as opposed to 1370°C (2500°F) for pulverized coal boilers. This results in the formation of lower levels of NON. Because operating temperatures are below those that fuse coal ash, a single design can burn a variety of coals without slagging or fouling problems. TVA's AFBC development program Tennessee Valley Authority's (TVA) involvement in AFBC development began in 1974 and has addressed the technical uncertainties through a comprehensive program of design, experimental, and analytical studies. In 1979, TVA and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) developed plans for a 20-MW AFBC pilot plant, a 10-fold scale-up over the next largest test facility. In contrast to pyrometallurgy's 6000year history in metals production, hydrometallurgy is of relatively recent origin. The earliest reference to it was in the 16th century, with the first applications to copper in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the 19th century, increased demands for pure metal resulted in the development of electrolytic refining, and early in this century electrowinning. The rapid growth in copper production in the 20th century, particularly in the United States and Chile, stimulated the development of new technology for leaching and for the recovery of copper from leach solutions. In the past 25 years, solvent extraction has become a major factor by permitting novel leaching technology that produces dilute or complex solutions. In addition, solvents other than sulfuric acid, and chemical methods for precipitating copper metal are now of increasing interest. These are trends that should grow in importance with the need to process lower grade and more complex materials. The evolution of copper hydrometallurgy is reviewed. Key factors in recent major developments are presented with details of specific operations and with trends for the future indicated. The relative importance of copper hydrometallurgy is compared with that of pyrometallurgy in the light of probable changes in ore supplies and character.

In order to evaluate the relationships between weathering and durability and strength of rock samples from the Goathill North rock pile at the Molycorp Questa mine, NM, we conducted slake durability and point load tests. Slake durability index (ID2) values ranged from 84 to 98%. Point load strength index (Is50) averaged for all rock units ranged from 1.1 to 5.7 MPa. Results show a slight positive trend between ID2 and paste pH. Two populations of data are distinguishable when ID2 is plotted versus the percentages of chlorite, illite and internal friction angle. In general, Is50 values increase toward the interior of the rock pile. Preliminary conclusions indicate that the durability and strength of the rock pile material generally increase toward the interior of the rock pile. Pre-rock pile alteration and post-rock pile weathering history have affected the durability of the GHN rock pile samples.

Introduction The domestic copper industry has suffered for some time from declining ore grades; rising costs associated with conventional mining, milling, smelting and refining; tightening environmental restrictions; and shrinking markets due to materials substitution. Ore grade depletion is a major problem. It is illustrated by the decline in average copper yield shown in Fig. 1. From 1979, copper grade has dropped 60%, lowering yields from 1.2% to 0.49% (Sousa, 1981). The US copper industry is taking drastic measures to enhance its competitive posture and to guarantee its future worldwide position. In a sense, this involves a general restructuring of the processing philosophy of US copper producers. Judging from recent trends, this restructuring relates to the application of solution mining techniques to the treatment of copper ores and low grade waste material. Recovering copper by leaching techniques has been practiced for centuries. As early as the mid-16th century, some Hungarian copper mines were recycling copper bearing leach solutions through waste heaps (Nash, 1912). In the US, recovering copper from dilute mine waters has been carried out for more than 100 years. There are, however, certain technical innovations that have elevated the importance of solution mining as a process for copper recovery. These include: • Advances in solvent extract-electrowinning (SX-EW); • Developments in acid and acid ferric cure processes for oxide and mixed oxide sulfide ores; • Improvements in heap and dump construction; and • Advances in in situ leaching technology. Generally, solution mining enjoys certain intrinsic advantages over conventional mining and milling. Compared to conventional milling, the combined capital and operating costs of leaching facilities are normally lower, start-up times are faster, and the leaching operation usually has less impact on the environment. Furthermore, solution mining represents an expedient way of extracting metals from small shallow deposits, and is particularly suited to the treatment of low grade sources. And, in the case of waste dump leaching, there is a tremendous resource in-place that has the mining cost already off the books. This paper updates current US copper solution mining trends. Solution mining systems Schlitt (1980) summarized the characteristics of the principle leach systems in the US. He pointed out that the wide variations in copper deposits make solution mining a more site-specific activity than conventional mining and milling. Heap leaching is usually selected for moderate to high grade ores having a copper mineralization that is amenable to acid leaching (oxides, silicates and certain sulfides). Higher grade ores mined specifically for heap leaching are usually treated to optimize copper extraction, therefore, crushing and some pretreatment (acid curing) may be justified. On the other hand, dump leaching practice usually involves leaching low grade waste rock placed on large dumps as dictated by topography and haulage costs. Mine waste is therefore treated in an uncrushed run-of-mine condition. Finally, in situ leaching is appropriate for either very deep ore bodies or for recovering copper from low grade rock left behind in abandoned pit walls, stopes, and subsidence zones from earlier mining activities. True in-situ solution mining should be defined as the leaching of ore in its original geologic setting. Heap leaching Heap leaching has a long history as a hydrometallurgical process for copper recovery. The combined 76th Annual Minnesota Section of SME meeting and 64th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium were held April 8and 9, 2003, in Duluth, MN. This year’s theme was “Stakeholders, Partners in Change.” The meeting included four keynote speakers, technical presentations and a tradeshow. Engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers from throughout the United States and eastern Canada attended the meeting. Reflecting the theme of the meeting, all agreed that the mine owners, the government, the community and the employees are all “stakeholders.” They must be “partners in change” for the iron ore mining industry to survive in the region. Compared with past meetings, where improved technology was the primary focus, this year the focus was on the dramatic restructuring of the entire industry. As noted by several of the speakers, “This time, the change is not in technology.”

The ability to efficiently process lowgrade ores has allowed the Gold Fields Mesquite Mine in Imperial County, CA to expand from a 2.1 Mt/a (2.3 million stpy) rate in 1986 to its present 7.3 Mt/ a (8 million stpy) processing rate. Increased tonnage demands led to the 1989 construction and startup of a dump leach pad to supplement the existing heap leach operation. This resulted in an excellent opportunity to compare the two processes at the same operation. Additional operating costs associated with the crushed ore heaps are justified through enhanced recoveries, even at very low ore grades. Gold Fields' Mesquite Mine is a gold heap leach facility located about 55 km (35 miles) east of Brawley in southeastern California. Five open-pit mines will be developed over the projected life of the property, covering a total area extending to a maximum of 5.5 km (3.4 miles) to the east and west, and 2.4 kin (1.5 miles) to the north and south. Mesquite will process 7.3 Mt (8 million st) of ore and produce more than 6.2 t (200 000 oz) of gold in 1990.

This paper presents research results on assessment of environmental impact of digging and loading equipment in surface coal mining. Environmental impact is accessed through the equipment exhaust and dust emissions, and sound level. Exhaust emission is related to carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Dust generation is expressed through the particulate matter PM10 and total suspended particulate matter (TSP), while sound is presented through the sound pressure level. Modeling of environmental impact of digging and loading equipment is conducted in Microsoft Visual Studio.NET software package. This research is a part of a boarder project on development of software system for the selection of productive, cost-efficient and eco-friendly mining systems, which is sponsored by the Appalachian Research Initiatives for Environmental Sciences (ARIES). The research work presented here may be used by mining professionals to aid in quantifying environmental impact of digging and loading equipment and determinate strategies for reducing its overall impact.

Introduction In 2007, Newmont Mining Corporation will begin construction of a milling and cyanidation leaching circuit for the Yanacocha site in Peru. Ore to be processed in the circuit contains a relatively high level of cyanide-soluble copper, and as a result, leach solutions are expected to contain elevated levels of copper and WAD cyanide. As the means of controlling copper levels in leach solution, a circuit will be installed to precipitate copper sulfide from barren solution using sodium hydrosulfide. In addition, a circuit will be installed to recover cyanide from barren solution, with recovered cyanide to be returned to the leaching circuit and treated solution to be utilized as make-up in existing heap leaching facilities. As needed to support design of the copper precipitation and cyanide recovery circuits, pilot testing was conducted in 2005 to determine preferred operating conditions and evaluate the performance of the processes. This paper presents results from the pilot testing where 99% copper reduction was achieved and 95% to 98% cyanide recovery was achieved.

The need/wish to sequestrate CO2is based on the assumption of the International Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), that CO2 maybe the major driver in climatic changes, i.e. especially the anthropogenic CO2emissions due to the combustion of fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas will increase the atmospheric CO2-content, which will lead to higher temperatures in the atmosphere. The 0.03% CO2in the atmosphere have a 22% share of the natural greenhouse gas effect of 33 K necessary for life on earth. The main share of 62% has the water vapour in the atmosphere. Only if one concentrates on the greenhouse gas effect of the gases beside water vapour, CO2 becomes most important with 58% influence. In addition there are other influences on the climate like: • Eccentricity of earth’s orbit, precession of orbital plane, obliquity and precession of earth’s rotation axis (Milankovitch’s theory) • Sunspots and magnetic field of the sun • Changing streams in the ocean • Volcanic activities • Distribution of continents on the surface of the earth • Impact of meteorites • Change of insulation by interplanetary dust [Muller, R.A. 2000] etc. To answer the question, if the CO2-content in the atmosphere has an important or exclusive influence on the earth atmospheric mean surface temperature, one should look into history. Figure 1shows the mean temperature of the atmosphere and the atmospheric CO2-content time histories 1 billion years back; no correlation can be found between them. Nevertheless a lot of countries have committed themselves to reduce their CO2-emissions.

The Greater Vancouver Water District is currently constructing the Seymour-Capilano Water Filtration Project to enhance the quality of drinking water in the Vancouver metropolitan area. The Seymour-Capilano Water Filtration Project comprises the 1,800 million litres per day Seymour-Capilano Filtration Plant, the 1,080million litres per day Capilano Pumping Station, twin tunnels with associated shafts, and the Capilano Energy Recovery Facility. The twin tunnels will convey raw water under pressure from the Capilano Reservoir to the Seymour Filtration Plant and return treated (filtered) water for distribution. The Twin Tunnels component of the project comprises twin, 3.7 m diameter, 7.2 km TBM bored tunnels, the 180 m deep Seymour Shaft as the main launch shaft, and two 4 m diameter, 268 m deep raise bore exit shafts at Capilano. The Twin Tunnels have been planned as predominantly unlined tunnels sited at depth entirely within granitic bedrock and cross under two major buried glacial valleys of breadths in excess of 1500 metres that are filled with glacial sediments to depths up to 200 metres. The maximum overburden along the tunnel alignment is approximately 400 metres. Comprehensive site investigations and studies were completed during the detailed design stage of the project. The construction of the twin tunnels started in the fall of 2004 and is planned to be completed by mid-2008.

The empirical rock failure criteria play an important role in predicting the mechanical behavior of rocks, since affecting parameters on the behavioral properties of rocks are complex and numerous. Usually the empirical failure criteria are obtained by statistical methods, namely by means of fitting the mathematical function onto the experimental data. For evaluation and verification of the results, however, the quality and accuracy of the fit must be considered. This paper studies the efficiency and accuracy of conventional empirical rock failure criteria using a new approach, which is based on the analysis of uncertainty amplitude on the constant parameters of each criterion. The approach adopted here, is based on the combination of some parameters such as Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), type of function, degree of freedom and the confidence level of constants. Correlation coefficient (R2) is then a comprehensive test and can be used effectively for comparison and accuracy of empirical rock failure criteria.

The aim of this paper is to describe and analyze the ground treatment performed between January and May 2002 in order to increase safety during excavation and reduce instability problems along 180 m of tunnel, during the construction works associated with line 10 extension to the Madrid Metro. The tunnel was excavated using the traditional Madrid Method and in the section considered in this paper layers of sand were detected around the tunnel crown area with a significant presence of water, the in?ow of which needed to be controlled with a minimum impact on the surrounding environment.

The influence of bacterial growth phase on the flotation behavior of malachite has been investigated in a well-controlled Hallimond tube system. The microflotation tests were conducted for malachite (45?53 µm) using different amounts (bulk phase concentration=1×108?5×109 cells/mL) of Rhodococcus opacus (R. opacus) as a collector, which was grown at mid-exponential versus stationary phase, at a constant speed (340 rpm), pH (6), and malachite-bacteria interaction and flotation time (each 10 min). Hug differences between R. opacus cells in mid-exponential and stationary phase was observed from the results for electrophoretic mobility and flotation tests. Specifically, the isoelectric point of the cells in the stationary phase was lower than that in the mid-exponential phase, suggesting that the amount and distribution of surface functional groups onto cell surfaces are likely different. Additionally, the cells in stationary phase led to significant increase in the flotability compared to those in mid-exponential phase over the background bacterial concentration level of 1×108?5×109 cells/mL. Furthermore, the flotation efficiency tended to increase with increasing cell dosage for stationary phase cells while no distinct difference was observed for mid-exponential cells.

Impregilo/SA Healy JV recently completed this Project using the first slurry shield TBM’s in the United States. The Project used two TBM’s to mine 18,000 feet in sands, gravels, and silty alluvial materials under the Willamette River and downtown Portland, Oregon. This paper discusses alignment and geological conditions, equipment selection and plant setup, and tunnel excavation means and methods, parameters, and results. Extensive hyperbaric operations were required and will also be discussed.

"Some of the weakest roof in United States coal mines is found in the Illinois Basin. Historically, the Illinois Basin has also suffered from high rates of unplanned roof falls and rock fall injuries. During the past decade, however, roof fall and rock fall injury rates have fallen dramatically, and are now lower than the national average. Several technologies are responsible for the improvement. Roof screen was rarely used ten years ago, but a number of mines now use it on a regular basis to prevent rock falls and rock fall injuries. Other roof skin control fixtures and work practices have contributed as well.The reduction in roof falls is also directly attributed to enhanced intrinsic roof support. Stiffer primary bolting patterns have reduced the magnitude of roof spalling and roof sag. They have also helped create a more intact beam that is able to be suspended from longer cable bolts. Cable bolt design methodology has also contributed to this reduction in roof falls. Some early cable bolt applications were unsuccessful because they employed as few as two cable bolts per intersection. This paper describes a methodology for estimating rock loads for support design.ROOF FALL TRENDS IN THE ILLINOIS BASINAlthough the Illinois Basin has a long history of poor roof conditions and high rates of unplanned roof falls and rock fall injuries, recent data indicates a change in the trend. Roof fall rates are determined by dividing the total number of non-injury roof falls by the total number of hours worked underground. The data is considered for 200,000-man hours. While the Illinois Basin was once a coalfield experiencing roof falls at nearly twice the national average, it is now at or below the national rate. Figure 1 indicates the trend over the past 20 years. In 2008, the Illinois Basin mines experienced 5.06 roof falls every 200,000-man-hours, compared to only 0.75 in 2018.There has also been a significant reduction in the rate of rock fall injuries in the Illinois Basin coal mines, as shown in Figure 2. In 2008 there were 1.48 rock fall injuries every 200,000-man-hours, compared to only 0.43 in 2018.ILLINOIS BASIN COAL ROOF GEOLOGYThe roof rock in the Illinois Basin has been studied in the past to understand the primary causes of roof failures (Molinda et al., 2008; Thompson, 2010; Molinda and Mark, 2010). Rusnak and Mark (2000) evaluated 10,000 laboratory strength tests from 800 rock units and concluded that for shale, siltstone, and sandstone, the strength of the Illinois Basin variety was less than half that of the same rock types in Central Appalachia (Figure 3). A study of Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) measurements in more than 200 US coal mines also found that weak roof was predominant in the Illinois Basin (Mark and Molinda, 2005)."
