The 16-to-1 milling operation is Sunshine Mining Company's first new silver and gold producing facility. The 16-to-1 underground mine and mill are located approximately 64 km (40 miles) southwest of Tonopah, Nevada. Ore re- serves in the epithermal vein deposit are estimated at 0.91 Mt (one million st) of ore, at an average silver grade of 206 to 240 g/t (6 to 7 oz/st) and an average gold grade of 1.2 g/t (0.035 oz/st). The underground mine uses a large diameter blasthole stoping system of mining using highly mechanized rubber-tired equipment. The mill uses conventional cyanide leaching with countercurrent decantation and Merrill-Crowe precipitation. The mill start-up was in February 1982 resulting in the first pour of dore' in March 1982. The mill's present annual production is approximately 31.1 t (1.0 million oz) of silver and 264 kg (8500 oz) of gold.

The Ore Mountains in Germany have a history of more than 850 years of underground mining activity. This has created a situation where thousands of old mine shafts and adits are due for rehabilitation. While no long-term stable rehabilitation was executed in previous centuries, those abandoned mine sites which date back to the uranium mining boom from 1945 to 1962 were rehabilitated immediately after mine closure according to state-of-the art technology. Over the years, however, it has become obvious that most of these sites are not long-term stable and thus it has become necessary to rehabilitate them a second time. Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg is carrying out a research project on the optimization of this process. 70 mine site rehabilitation projects, the technology and the materials used have been assessed. A technical guideline for future rehabilitation projects, based on the outcomes of this assessment, is under development with the goal to make it easier, faster and more economical to select and apply suitable designs and construction materials for dams, plugs and other rehabilitation structures in former uranium mines.

Innovations in communications and real-time information systems are providing industry opportunities to improve profitability. Real-time operating data is collected from equipment across a site or even several sites into a central server for secure PC and PDA-based Internet access. This paper includes discussion of how operating staff can use wireless devices to see equipment and processing data from anywhere throughout the mines and concentrators, and how management can view results from multiple mines, all in real time. Additional opportunities enabled through the remote access by equipment vendors or mining consultants is also presented, as well as an overview of typical benefits and current installations.

An accurate estimation of mining block grades continues to be a challenging task for ore reserve practitioners. Two of the factors that affect the accuracy of the estimates are the estimation method used and the variability of the mineralization in the deposit. The objectives of the study are twofold: Firstly, to see how different estimation methods perform on a given deposit. Secondly, to determine the impact of particular nature of the mineralization on the results. The comparison of several estimation methods for the prediction accuracy is performed using the conditional simulation results as the basis.

Soil erosion is strongly related to soil hydraulic properties. Understanding how surface coal mining impacts those properties is important in developing effective management practices to control erosion during reclamation. Soils from undisturbed areas, roughly graded mine spoil, replaced topsoil before seeding, and revegetated areas at the Rosebud Mine in Eastern Montana were evaluated to determine impacts on soil hydraulic properties. Field and laboratory studies were conducted to determine soil hydraulic properties, including particle-size distribution, organic matter content, and saturated hydraulic conductivity. WEPP simulations and risk analyses were performed on the soil hydraulic property data to determine the impacts of changes on soil erosion. The hydraulic properties of the soils in each representative area have significant differences due to the mining and reclamation practices at the mine. WEPP simulations show that the potential for soil erosion increases due to mining activities disturbing the soil. WEPP simulations also indicate that the potential for erosion may return to pre-mining levels over time with effective revegetation practices.

There are many different machine setup parameters and variables that affect the production of cone crushers in a mineral processing plant. One of these variables is the eccentric speed at which the cone gyrates. In June 2012, pilot tests were conducted on a 200 hp high speed cone crusher to determine the production and operating conditions over a wide spectrum of eccentric speed. Every plant will have variations in the ore characteristics and feed rates throughout the life of the mine, and at times throughout a single shift of operation, which result in non-optimal use of the crushing energy and inconsistent process control. For high speed cone crushers, the crusher will exhibit a different capacity, power required, and discharge size distribution as the speed ranges over the design limits of the machine. This study documents the measured variation in production and energy efficiency both when the crusher was ran at full capacity as well as when the feed to the crusher was not sufficient to run at full capacity. Overall, the results match theory and the capacity and power fluctuated by 25% and 17%, respectively, over the speed range when operated full while there was an overall trend of slightly coarser discharge size distribution as the speed decreased. The results with the fixed feed rate were more telling, as the crushers had 4-14% higher production when making a theoretical minus 12.5 mm product when operating at the optimal speed as compared to the worst speed in the ?typical? speed range for this application. Secondary analysis of the fixed tonnage testing also showed that the power draw was more consistent with lower magnitude spikes at the higher speeds (higher cavity level), as on average the standard deviation of the power draw increased from 7% to 18% and the peak power spikes from 20% to 48% over the speed range tested. The findings lay groundwork for more efficient plant design. Varying the speed of the crusher can be used to tune the crusher speed during commissioning, adapt to changing ore conditions over long periods of time, or be used as a dynamic input into an advanced control system. Each action above would serve to make the crusher(s) more productive and more energy efficient, and would also have mechanical benefits for the machine. Personnel at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) are studying the technology and applications of salt-gradient solar ponds (see below) for both electrical and thermal energy generation. The brine extraction and processing site operated by the Kerr-McGee Corporation at Searles Lake, California, offers ideal conditions for economic construction of solar ponds. Furthermore, since rising conventional energy costs adversely affect the economic recovery of brine by the present process, this site was selected for a study on the feasibility of integrating the solution mining of trona (Na2CO3?NaHCO3?2H20) in the lower salt with solar ponds for heating. The major emphasis of this study was to determine whether inexpensive thermal energy available at the brine extraction site would be useful in extracting increased mineral value from the resource. The present operation, which involves the simple extraction of the complex brine and its processing at the adjacent plant, is sometimes referred to as solution mining. Since the concept discussed in this paper involves injecting a heated sodium sulfate brine to dissolve carbonate underground, the proposed scheme is referred to as "enhanced" solution mining. At present, discounted cash flow analysis is generally accepted as the preferred method of valuation of mine projects in surface coal mining. One of the major reasons for that is its ability to take into account the time effect of money over the life-of-mine. As a looking-forward method, it requires forecasts be made with regard to economic, technological, technical, geological, and environmental conditions that will prevail in the future. All forecasts are inherently uncertain as they are a function of the uncertainty of all variables of the discounted cash flows analysis. This indicates that the only alternative for modeling the uncertainty in the project evaluation is the development of adequate risk models to serve the decision-making process. The paper offers a model of project cash flows at risk in strip coal mining, which is an integrated corporate risk management solution. The model is based on a stochastic approach that provides the answer to the question about how large is the deviation between stochastic cash flows and the planned value (or that used in the budget) at each time step of the discounted cash flows analysis, that is due to the uncertainty in the model variables. A solution is worked out for the allowable range of the stochastic cash flows variation that determines the probability of achieving the planned value of a mine project. The Monte Carlo simulation technique is used to model the stochastic behavior of the project variables. A case study of an opencast coal mine project is provided to illustrate the applicability of the risk model. The results obtained provide a new understanding of the mine project risk as a component of the project discount rate.

The opportunity for an exploration geologist to follow a successful exploration project through the feasibility, financing, construction, development and exploitation phase is rare. In addition, it is not often that the exploration geologist can be present during the mining of a deposit to explain why certain actions were taken or interpretations made and to find out how these interpretations turned out in actuality. At the Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos mine in New South Wales, Australia, mining has been in progress for six years and the writer has been intimately associated with the project during the five years of exploration and the six years of exploitation. The industry is possibly aware of the fact that the Woodsreef Mine has had major production problems, the majority of which have stemmed from the unique characteristics of the ore body and of the fibre. Because of these unique features, a large volume of research has been undertaken by Woodsreef and by other scientific organisations in Australia, England and Canada on the Woodsreef fibre. The answers to some of the problems have negated some semi-sacred concepts of asbestos ore milling and led to the development of new techniques, such as the adoption of microscopic fibre counts as a routine procedure; the modification of accepted evaluation procedures; the development of new machines for dedusting fibres, and to the recognition of a fibre with a unique milling behaviour pattern and, possibly, properties. The problems experienced can be divided broadly into those associated with the geology and those associated with the physical properties of the fibre. It is possible that the same features may manifest themselves in other deposits around the world, and if they can be recognised during the exploration stages a feasibility evaluation may be just that little closer to the actual.

Since 2001, CVRD is carrying out a modernization project in it’s pelletizing plant’s automation systems, that comprehends instrumentation, control and information systems. In addition, the project includes implementation of advanced control systems, using artificial intelligence techniques, including fuzzy logic, expert systems and dynamic physical models, to increase production, reduce fuel and energy consumption and improve quality. This paper reports CVRD’s experiences in carrying out an optimization project.

Barrick Goldstrike’s (Goldstrike) AA Heap Leach Pad is an HDPE lined facility used for gold recovery from low grade ores using conventional cyanide heap leach technology, operated from 1987 through 1999. Goldstrike prepared a unique reclamation plan for the AA Leach Pad Facility to provide for a cost-effective, environmentally sound facility closure and to fulfill the State of Nevada’s closure requirements. Traditional Nevada leach pad closure has involved rinsing to reduce cyanide concentration to an acceptable level, followed by reclamation. However, certain metals and compounds are not typically reduced by rinsing and some constituents may increase in concentration with rinsing. A closure scenario to effect limited infiltration through installation of a capillary cover for the leach pad was developed. The capillary cover was constructed by placing a fine-grained layer above the coarse-grained spent leach material to create a capillary break. In an arid climate such as Nevada, the fine-grained layer will rarely reach full saturation and the cover will be able to store water during precipitation and allow removal of water through evaporation and transpiration (ET) during the growing season. A 1.22 m (4 ft) cover thickness was selected as the optimum design cover thickness. The drainage network on the surface of the re-contoured AA Heap Leach Pad was specifically designed to enhance the revegetation, reclamation, and sediment yield control aspects of the AA Heap Leach Pad closure, while resulting in a natural looking surface, compatible with the surrounding topography. Adjacent natural topographic features were used to establish target design parameters for re-contouring and erosion control design.

To meet the growing need for CO2 capture and storage technology, Michigan Technological University is researching CO2 capture and storage using carbonate solutions. The objective of the present study was to increase the absorption rate of CO2 into the carbonate solution without reducing the absorption capacity of the solution. This approach used a polypropylene glycol methyl ether (PPGME) as a surfactant to chemically alter the gas bubble size. Experiments were conducted to study the absorption rate of CO2 at varying surfactant concentrations of 0, 0.12, 0.24, 0.36, and 0.48 g/L. Results showed that as the concentration of surfactant increased in solution, the absorption rate also increased. The CO2 absorption rate increased from 3.45 mmol/min CO2 at 0g/L PPGME to 3.92 mmol/min CO2 at 0.48 g/L PPGME. This amounted to a 14% increase in the CO2 absorption rate with no decrease in absorption capacity of the solution.

The choice of ventilation schemes in the Northern Mujsky railway tunnel and definition of the nec-essary quantities of air ensuring regulated radiation conditions in the tunnel system has been accomplished. The influence of natural draught on the stability of tunnel ventilation has been estimated. The design of a portal venti-lation gate allowing minimal influence from natural factors is described. The dependence of pressure loss in the sliding ventilation gates on their spanning value of the vehicle tunnel section has been determined. The selection of parameters for an atmospheric air heating system in winter has been carried out. The operation regimes of air heaters, dependent on the temperature of atmospheric air, have been established.

Fully mechanized longwall mining with large mining heights (LMHs) in shallow-depth thick coal seams has been widely applied in Shenfu coalfield, China. Dynamic loading and rib spalling is serious when the LMH working face experiences periodic weighting in shallow coal seams. The advanced breaking position (fracturing ahead of the face) in the roof affects the strength of the mine pressure (weighting) when the roof is broken. Based on the theory of the “elastic foundation beam,” this paper presents a mechanical model for the advanced breaking of the roof, including a predictive formula. In an attempt to verify the formula, a field program consisting of multiple-point borehole extensometers installed in the roof in advance of the longwall face was performed in the No. 22201 working face of Zhangjiamao coal mine in the Shenfu mining area, China. The field measurement results show that the roof movement of the LMH working face is detected prior to roof pressure increase, and that the roof breaks approximately 5–8 m ahead of the face. This compares with a calculated value of 6.9 m, indicating that the formula developed in this research is reliable and should have application in predicting roof pressure associated with LMH working faces in shallow coal seams.

In this paper, uniaxial compression tests were conducted on intact rocks and broken rocks that were reinforced by grouting, and the effects of grouting on the strength of broken rocks were analyzed. The results show that after grouting reinforcement, the bearing capacity of broken rocks with different lithologies increased, and their uniaxial compressive strength recovered by approximately 6%–16%. The results indicated that the stronger the rock, the smaller the strength recovery of the consolidated body formed after grouting. At the same time, using borehole camera observation and deep overburden strata separations, the fracture development characteristics of surrounding rocks of the gob-side retained entry were analyzed and divided into different regions. On this basis, a guided grouting method was proposed; that is, shallow hole grouting was first used in the plastic zone of the broken surrounding rocks to form the isolation layer, and then deep grouting holes were arranged in the elastic-plastic zone of the transition zone to guide the slurry flow to the shallow unfilled zone. Therefore, the broken surrounding rocks were reinforced into an integrated body and selfbearing capacity improved.

During early stages of the detailed design for Detroit?s Upper Rouge CSO Tunnel Project, a Value Engineering Recommendation suggested the design team investigate alternative concepts to the usual cast-in-place or precast concrete lining system for the Project?s many smaller diameter Deaeration Vent Shafts. The resulting design investigation produced not only an alternative lining system, but lead to a proposed non-conventional approach to shaft installation means and methods through soil and rock necessary to construct the permanent shaft lining system. This paper will outline and summarize the technical issues, contractual restrictions, and cost considerations that eventually lead to the final shaft design

Coal preparation plants play an important role in modern society by providing high quality feeds for coal-fired utilities, industrial boilers and metallurgical coke facilities. Unfortunately, field data indicate that preparation plants are often not operated under optimum conditions, resulting in lower productivity and lost profits. In many cases, this shortcoming can be attributed to a failure by plant operators (i) to recognize the importance of correctly adjusting plant operating conditions to accommodate requirements dictated by coal sales agreements within different coal markets and (ii) to properly account for variations in product moisture with particle size across different plant circuits. This paper discusses the important influence of moisture constraints on preparation plant optimization and provides a case study to illustrate the potential gains that can be realized via proper understanding of plant moisture control.

The Midvale Slag Site covers 300 acres in Midvale, Salt Lake County, Utah. Midvale (population 10,000) is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area (population 936,000). Between 1902 and 1971, United States Smelting, Refining and Mining Co. smelted ores on the site to produce copper, gold, lead, and silver. Figure 1 shows a picture of the historical Midvale smelter operations. [ ] When operations ceased, the site was estimated to contain 2 million tons of slag from these operations. The smelter no longer exists. In 1971, Valley Materials, Inc., acquired the site to process the slag into materials for railroad beds and asphalt highways. During the 1980s, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) raised concerns regarding environmental impacts associated with the historical site operations. The Midvale Slag Superfund Site was listed on the NPL in 1991. The Site consists of two Operable Units (OUs): OU1 covering the properties north and adjacent to former ore smelting operations; and OU2 covering the smelter site itself. OU1 had historically been affected by wind blown slag dust and stack emissions occurring on OU2 and the Sharon Steel site further to the south. These emissions resulted in elevated levels of arsenic and lead in the native soils. The EPA issued the final Record of Decision (ROD) for the OU1 Site in 1995. The OU1 ROD required the implementation of institutional controls for the undeveloped portions of OU1 in order to restrict future land use to commercial/industrial purposes unless additional remediation was performed. Hence, the land comprising OU1 was originally considered in the ROD to be suitable for commercial or industrial purposes without the need for remedial action. However, development of OU1 for other land uses, including residential or recreational, would require additional assessment and probable remediation. The OU2 parcel was remediated by EPA to allow future land development, and the Sharon Steel site was remediated by EPA and deleted from the NPL. PROPERTY TRANSACTION AND REDEVELOPMENT In February 2006, a private development company, Mercer Bingham Junction, LLC. (MBJ) purchased 130 acres of the OU1 property for the purpose of performing environmental remediation, and developing mixed residential and commercial real estate. Development of the property was conducted in cooperation with USEPA Region 8 (EPA), the Utah Department of Environmental Quality (UDEQ) and Midvale City. The guidelines under which residential development could occur were defined by EPA. The 130 acres was to be developed for open space, residential and commercial use as part the Midvale City Bingham Junction development. Figure 2 shows the general layout of the proposed land uses. [ ] In May 2005, MBJ began pre-acquisition due diligence activities to purchase the 130 acres of OU1 north of 7200 South Street, which now comprises the Bingham Junction Development. This included the completion of Phase I and limited Phase II investigations. The Phase II investigations were performed to evaluate arsenic and lead concentrations in the planned residential areas of the site, and to explore the contents of the historic landfill on the property. The historic landfill area was on the far west side of OU1, adjacent to the Jordan River. Soil samples collected during the Phase II investigation showed that the planned residential parcels did not currently meet the criteria established in the Tech Memo and that additional placement of fill or soil excavation would be required for residential development in this area. An evaluation performed by the previous owner of the property, Littleson, Inc., showed similar results.

The efficiency of a coal mine ventilation circuit is usually measured by the ratio of the sum of the face quantities divided by the quantity supplied by the fans. Other types of systems use the power delivered to the power supplied to measure efficiency. This paper argues the case that the current measure may be inadequate and that by also looking at the power ratio, ventilation may be better managed. Problems associated with failing ventilation systems would be highlighted earlier so that crisis management could be avoided.

For the last 15 years environmental Life-Cycle Assessments (LCA) have increasingly been used to evaluate the environmental performance of industrial processes and products and have been employed as a basis in decision making processes in the public and industrial sector. However, assessment methodologies for environmental protection measures and reclamation/remediation measures with respect to their consumption of natural resources are generally poorly developed. In this presentation a methodology for LCA of environmental protection measures and remedial actions, respectively is suggested, using the remediation/reclamation of mining sites as an example. Key aspect of this approach is the development of an evaluation method appropriate for environmental protection measures, which links the various impact indicators recognised in the impact assessments and allows their integrated assessment.
