While the COVID-19 pandemic has dominated the headlines, another epidemic in the United States has continued apace — the opioid epidemic. Half a million opioid overdose deaths have occurred in the United States since 1999, when the opioid epidemic began. The causes of the epidemic include the rise in prescriptions for opioid pain medications, including for work-related pain. Miners and other occupations identified as physically demanding and at higher injury risk have been found to be at increased risk for opioid overdose [1]. However, awareness of the risk factors that might lead to opioid use, the potential hazards associated with their use, and resources to prevent addiction and death can allow miners to make choices that can reduce these risks.

This paper summarizes the Bureau of Reclamation's experience in the use of boring machines to excavate six major tunnels on the Bureau's water resources development projects in the western United States. The summary of experience is presented as a compilation of brief case studies for each of the six tunnels. Each compilation presents data on the tunnel dimensions, geological characteristics of the excavated rock, the tunneling machine used, machine operation, muck handling, method of tunnel support, ventilation system, and related information. The listing of the six tunnels in Table 1 reflects a diversity of tunnel lengths and diameters. However, despite this diversity of dimensions as well as the variety of rock encountered during excavation, the six tunnels have one major characteristic in common: their excavation was significantly expedited by the use of boring machines. Beginning with the 10,079-foot-long Tunnel No. 1 on the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project in New Mexico - the Bureau's first tunnel to be excavated by a boring machine - the boring machines, or "moles," have demonstrated their effectiveness in rapid and economical tunnel excavation. Tunnel No. 1, virtually 2 miles long, was bored through in 9 months, an unprecedented achievement in Bureau engineering experience, as compared with tunnels previously excavated by conventional means. In Australia's remote North West are located the operations of Cliffs Robe River, one of the world's largest iron ore projects. Initial project cost was $US300 million and required the construction of a deepwater port, two toms for 3000 people, a 105 Mw power station and 170 km of railroad, all in harsh, arid country over 1300 km from the nearest industrial centre. The ore occurs as goethite cappings on scattered mesas and averages 57 percent iron. All aspects of the project are reviewed from pre-operational research, through project construction to current operation.

One of the challenges of mining is the concentration of heavy metals it releases into the environment through a phenomenon called Acid Mine Drainage. Freiberg is no exception due to its long mining activities. The European Union proposes that all rivers and streams must be in a good ecological status by the year 2027 but this would be difficult for large water sources as it would be economically unviable. Consequently, the approach of treating these waters at point sources would be of immense help and hence this column experiment on mine water treatment with carbon sorbents to remove zinc form the Rothschönberger Stolln. For this experiment three resins namely, APTsorb, activated coke, charred fermentation residues (which was produced by the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology) were analyzed through a simple column experiment to determine their sorption capacities. Through their sorption capacity as this experiment seeks to ascertain: we are able to make suggestions scientifically on the best material among the three for the future design of a treatment plant for the RSS. After the experiment whereby a 10 ml peri glass column was used, material A: APTsorb showed the least adsorption capacity (0.01 meq/g) and this could be attributed to the fact that the resin works well under pre-determined parameters such as pH and surface area. Material B: Activated coke showed a better sorption capacity (0.53 meq/g) in comparison to the basis value used for this experiment. Material C: charred fermentation residue which was produced by the University showed the most efficient capacity of (1.69 meq/g). This in comparison with the value used as the basis for this experiment showed that material C (charred fermentation residue) is very efficient for zinc sorption. pH values measured at the effluent of all the experiment were slightly higher than the pH measured in the initiating water.

"The Coeur d’Alene mining district in northern Idaho was first discovered more than 130 years ago and has been the most prolific silver producer in the United States. The Lucky Friday Mine of Hecla Mining Co. (Fig. 1) is the oldest (76 years) and deepest mine in the district, producing approximately 725 t/day (800 stpd) from narrow, vertical lead-zinc-silver veins. Cut-and-fill stoping is currently employed at depths to about 2.3 km (7,500 ft) below ground surface, making it one of the three deepest mines in the western hemisphere. The #4 Shaft, a winze collared at approximately 1.8 km (5,900 ft) below surface and extending to a depth of nearly 2.9 km (9,600 ft), was recently completed to exploit the high-grade 30 Vein, whose resource has been identified to at least 3 km (9,700 ft) in depth.As with other deep mines worldwide, a number of challenging engineering issues occur, including: high in situ rock stress, squeezing ground, seismicity, high in situ rock temperature that requires refrigeration, diesel equipment that generates diesel particulate matter (DPM) requiring high ventilation airflow rates and long travel times for worker transport to mining areas.This article describes the methods that Hecla Mining Co. has employed during the past 50 years to combat these issues, with emphasis on the current efforts to implement continuous, mechanical mining with automated or teleremote operation and to introduce electric and battery-powered equipment to minimize refrigeration and ventilation requirements for the removal of DPMs.Geology and in situ stressThe host rock mass is an extremely thick sedimentary sequence (the Belt Series) that has been tilted vertically by mountain building. The rock mass in the current section of the mine consists of weak, heavily foliated argillites and stronger, bedded silty-argillites termed siltite. The vertical veins (80° to 85° dip) are parallel to the foliation with an approximate width of around 3 m (10 ft). There are two regional, vertical faults that parallel the vein; one forming the hangingwall of the orebody and one approximately 90 m (300 ft) in the footwall. Additionally, there are several thin, rough northdipping faults that occur in the footwall of the vein which terminate on the major vertical faults.Both the argillite and vein package rock have moderate strength, with uniaxial compressive strength averaging about 100 MPa (14,700 psi with a range from about 70 to 125 MPa), and are moderately abrasive, with CERCHAR abrasivity index of 2 to 3. The major in situ stress is horizontal and oriented in a northwest direction with magnitude about 1.5 times the vertical stress. Consequently, the Lucky Friday stress magnitude at depth is analogous to significantly deeper South African gold operations."

Each year, one living Hall of Fame inductee, up to three Medal of Merit recipients, honorees from mining?s past, and recipients of an Industry Partnership Award and a Special Citation are recognized for their respective contributions to the mining industry. Armine Frederick Ban?eld Jr., past chairman and founder of Mintec, Inc. located in Tucson, AZ, will be honored as the 2014 Hall of Fame Inductee at the awards banquet. Banfield founded Mintec from his Tucson apartment in 1970 and expanded it to a global operation. Under his guidance, Mintec won the 2013 President?s E-Award for Exports ? the highest recognition any United States company may receive for making a significant contribution to the expansion of U.S. exports. The extraction of nickel has been carried out by the hollow fiber membrane technique using D2EHPA as the mobile carrier from the manganese nodule leach liquor after separation of Cu(II), Zn(II) and Co(II). The experiments were designed according to central composite design (CCD), which is a response surface methodology. The process parameters used for the experimental design were: pH, concentration of D2EHPA in the membrane phase, flow rate and H2SO4 concentration in the strip solution. Based on the analysis of variance, a reduced quadratic model was found to best fit the experimental data. The process parameters were optimized to maximize the nickel flux and the optimized conditions were flow rate: 630 mL/min; pH: 6.37; D2EHPA: 1.15 mol/L (1,150 mol/m3) and H2SO4: 2.39% (430.2 mol/m3), for a maximum nickel flux of 7.08 x 10-5 mol/m2.s, which was in good agreement with the actual Ni flux of 6.99 x 10-5 mol/m2.s.

Coal mining is likely to sustain its critical role as energy requirements are increasing. While surface mining exploits coal seams near the surface, underground mining techniques are crucial for extracting deep coal reserves. Longwall mining is one of the most common methods used in underground coal mining operations. This paper introduces a data-based framework — including data collection, data analysis and the interpretation of operational data — for understanding the system efficiency of a longwall shearer. Operational performance is evaluated by the time between arrivals (TBA) and duration of the shearer stoppages, shearer drums’ reversal time, cutting speed and flit speed on daily production in a longwall top coal caving (LTCC) mine. A discrete event simulation model is developed to represent the bidirectional cutting sequence of a longwall shearer.

The run-of-mine coals in the U.S. being fed to coal cleaning plants have become increasingly finer due to the adoption of modern, mechanized mining methods, and economics are dictating that finer fractions, as well as the coarser fractions, be cleaned. Traditional dewatering methods (vacuum disc filters and centrifuges) are proving inadequate for preparing fine refuse for disposal or fine coal product for downstream handling. The Electric Power Research Institute has been supporting research into the nature and limitations of mechanical dewatering, and novel ways of improving it. The efficiency of various silicone-based chemicals at aiding dewatering was investigated, and it was shown that the final moisture content of hydrophilic coals after vacuum Filtration could be reduced by 1 to 5% with up to 40% increase in filtration rate by addition of one of several of these silicones. EPRI also has an on-going program at its Coal Cleaning Test Facility to investigate the performance of the Larox pressure filter in comparison with that of the disc filter and solid bowl centrifuge. While improvements to the dewatering performance currently being obtained in existing operating plants by such means are achieveable, a fundamental study has shown that, regardless of changes in operating conditions, there may be a limit to the lowest cake moisture content attainable by mechanical dewatering of a given sample of coal fines. Determination of this limit for a specific coal would be useful in designing facilities to dry and handle it.

This paper treats the spatial aspect of mine sequence optimization, revealing it in the context of determining the optimum number of cutbacks of an openpit mine. Cutback mining is currently a dominant method in the mining of base and precious metals. It is based on a pseudo-economic discretization of the pit space using advanced pit design algorithms. The result of implementing such an approach of pit design is the generation of pit shells, which need to be grouped into an optimum number of cutbacks to maximize project value. In this paper, the development of a mathematical solution of this problem using combinatorial analysis is presented. The solution provides a multivariate investigation of the optimum mine sequence with the implementation of a method for production scheduling optimization that uses Net Present Value (NPV) as a criterion for assessing the economic efficiency of mine sequencing. A case study using the conditions of a hypothetical openpit gold mine is provided to illustrate the applicability of the approach. The results obtained reveal the complex nature of NPV variation as a function of the cutback geometry.

All persons and communities that have experienced strong-motion earthquakes are convinced of the importance and complexity of earthquake problems thatmust be solved in order to reduce the personal hazards and property losses to a reasonable minimum. It is also clear that absolute elimination of all risks is impossible. Reduction of existing hazards and precautionary measures which will minimize chances for disaster can be accomplished by realistic appraisal of the effects of recent earth- quakes on modern structures and installations. Localities that have reason to expect so-called strong- motion earthquakes can anticipate these effects by taking appropriate steps. Valid earthquake information can only be obtained from earthquakes. Each earthquake contributes to the body of knowledge by additional facts and by clarification of previous observations. Rational interpretation of the data followed by practical application of the conclusions can contribute greatly to the safety of persons and property. The general public expects the architectural and engineering profession to accept this obligation and render this service. Most earthquake hazards are man-made and arise from the imperfections of the works of man and his failure to anticipate the consequences when the natural characteristics of his environment are ignored. If it is not given to man to prevent such natural phenomena as earthquakes, it is sometimes within his power to control their destructive effects and to reduce to a minimum the toll of life and human suffering.

In the past several decades, many major equipment manufacturers have ventured into developing new technology for underground hard rock excavation. This includes variety of configurations for full and partial face mobile excavation units. Mining industry prefers machines that can excavate noncircular, flat invert profiles and be able to make tight turns in hard rock. The need to use disc cutters for cutting hard rock has impeded the development of such machines due to the need for gripper system or large mass of a machine to support the force requirements of the disc cutters. Most of the prior attempts have been partially successful and the operations have faced some practical limits and challenges. Among the units that have been successfully used, one can name mobile miner, which was used for rock excavation in some projects. A redesigned mobile miner, called the “Remote Vein Miner,” or RVM, has been developed by Epiroc for underground hard rock mining in Hecla’s Lucky Friday Mine. This equipment potentially opens numerous opportunities for innovation in civil tunneling projects, where the operational flexibility and accessibility of a TBM’s limited tunnel path, design of the profile, and cost are limiting factors. This paper explores the application of the RVM in tunneling projects, its advantages and possible areas of innovation in tunnel planning and design.

A NIOSH study on occupational deaths between 1980 and 1989 indicated that in the United States, mining had the highest average annual fatality rate (3 1.9 per 100,000 workers) of any other major industry. Since "lack of training" was often cited as the primary cause of accidents, NIOSH has been investigating new methods for effective training. One such method is the use of low- cost, desktop computers to simulate a virtual mining environment. Computer-based training offers several advantages over conventional training because the computer programs provide a three- dimensional environment that allows the trainee to practice using evacuation routes, encounter mining hazards, and view mining operations without being exposed to any real danger. One major focus of the project is mine escapeway multiuser training using desktop virtual reality programs. Researchers have imported mine maps into the software for the purpose of practicing actual evacuation routes and procedures. Various scenarios for evacuation can be practiced in a three-dimensional computer simulation of the mine in a disaster situation, complete with smoke, fire, and other dangers. Depending on the trainee's job description (i.e., foreman, shift boss, beltman, etc.), certain tasks need to be performed in addition to navigating primary and/or secondary escape routes. Each scenario allows for individual or team-based training and provides a means to educate mine workers in hazard recognition and hazard avoidance. Using this program, mine workers can practice evacuating various mine layouts without the danger and expense associated with escapeway training in an actual underground mine. Each scenario can be changed to test the trainee's reaction in a variety of circumstances and run many times so the trainee can practice concepts. This training experience will help reinforce the knowledge acquired during more conventional classroom instruction, and the inherent flexibility of the program allows training materials to be tailored to meet the specific requirements of individual mines.

Resource Engineering and Development, Inc. is designing and building a portable 150 to 225 TPD, flotation-cyanide leach plant with unitized, skid-mounted components. This plant design, with its portability, low capital investment, and high recovery of silver and gold from many partially oxidized ores, is well suited to treat many small, high-grade deposits, old waste dumps, and old mill tailing piles. A description is given of flotation and/or cyanide leach tests run on about 17 partially oxidized, newly mined ores; waste dump materials; placer slimes; and old mill tailings.

Despite several methods (empirical, statistical and machine-learning tools) to calculate blast-induced ground vibration, it is not easy to predict and simulate blast vibration precisely under varying blasting loads and strata conditions due to complications in the blasting procedure. In this study, field blast data were simulated in Ansys software using explicit dynamics, and ground vibrations for 20 single-hole blasts were monitored. The densities of emulsion explosives were in the range of 0.9 to 1.15 g/cm3. In the laboratory, rock properties were determined from rock samples collected from the mine site before blasting. The in-hole velocity of detonation (VoD) and density of the emulsion explosive were also determined and used in numerical analysis to know the ground vibrations at specific points. The results of ground vibrations predicted by the model were validated using field data.

"Specialized numerical modeling codes have been developed over the years to estimate ground stresses during the excavation of coal in underground mines. One of these tools, MULSIM, a displacement discontinuity boundary element code, was last developed by Zipf into a version called MULSIM/NL [USBM 1992a, 1992b]. The code was used frequently in years past, but closure of the Bureau of Mines in 1996 marked the beginning of a pause in its development. A similar tool with distinctly different treatment of overburden idealization, LaModel, was subsequently developed [Heasley 1997] and largely displaced MULSIM/NL in the literature. However, recent work modeling deep western longwall coal mines [Larson and Whyatt 2013] has demonstrated that MULSIM has distinct advantages for regions with relatively stiff and strong overburden. This work required that MULSIM be revived and updated into a version called MulsimNL/Large. Updates include larger array sizes, greater precision, greater number of materials, and the addition of a five-point, six-segment pillar load/displacement model that provides the user a more flexible coal-strength model allowing hardening and softening before a final residual strength. MulsimNL/Large has the ability to calibrate to large load transfer distances observed in some western U.S. coal mines that appear to be caused by strong, massive units in the overburden and/or floor of a coal mine. Also, it provides the ability to calibrate gob stiffness to simulate measurements or estimates of overpanel weight distribution between gob and abutment, while still maintaining load transfer distance with minor adjustments. MulsimNL/Large can easily implement material strengths calculated from various pillar strength models. The five-point model gives MulsimNL/Large the ability to easily simulate pillar behavior that is extracted from detailed pillar models, such as FLAC3D. MulsimNL/Large or similar approaches should be considered for evaluating mining layouts where stratigraphic conditions are known to cause overpanel weight to transfer to an extent significantly longer than the empirical method widely used to calculate load transfer distances in the U.S. [Peng and Chiang 1984; Mark 1987; USBM 1990]."

Frozen coal creates severe handling problems. Utilities require uninterrupted supplies of coal to meet their increasing coal consumption rates. Difficulties incurred due to frozen coal result in more costly downtime for the utilities. Air cannons, vibratory hammers and thaw sheds are examples of mechanical devices used to break, crack or thaw frozen coal. Recently chemical treatments have been developed as preventive measures. The freezing of coal depends upon a number of factors, of which one of the most significant is surface moisture. The more there is, the larger the frozen coal problem. Slide 1 depicts a graph of frozen coal compressive strength as a function of surface moisture. Below a certain minimum value the coal will not freeze. Above this point, compressive strength is essentially a linear function of moisture over the range practically encountered. By surface moisture is meant the free moisture on coal having a normal vapor pressure as opposed to capillary moisture or inherent moisture. In addition to the straightforward freezing of coal surface moisture binding particulates together, frost formation occurs due to temperature gradients which develop in rail-cars and stockpiles .

In 1977, the Bureau of Mines awarded a grant to the State of South Carolina to explore the possibility of using Landsat multispectral scanner (MSS) data as an aid in monitoring surface mining activities in selected counties of the State. Work had been done in Aiken County prior to the grant by Bureau of Mines and State personnel at the EROS Data Center using both the GE Image 100 and ESL IDIMS systems. The initial work on the 1-100 consisted of locating and measuring the areas of various kaolin mines. The results were excellent on location, identification, and accurate area measurements of several mines as compared with aerial photos of each mine. The effort also included locating and measuring the size of all mines (including sand and gravel) within two U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 7 ½ min quadrangle maps. Line printer overlays using the IDIMS equipment and software resulted in the location of all known mines within an estimated error less than ±91.4m (5300 feet). Mine acreage was calculated by counting each symbol (which represented one pixel) and multiplying by 1.1 (the number of acres per pixel). Figure 1 shows a portion of one quadrangle overlay. Table I gives a comparison of acreage measured for sever- al mines from the 1-100 and IDIMS systems vs. aerial photo measurements.

Due to improvements in the safety of other aspects of mining (primarily in roof control), haulage related accidents, particularly rail haulage accidents, are about to become the most common category of hazards causing death and injuries to underground coal miners. The major causes of these accidents are collisions between vehicles, men caught between rib and trip or between cars, derailments, and runaway cars. Such hazards can be greatly reduced if the motorman has the capability to selectively couple and uncouple cars from the cab of the locomotive, to transmit braking intelligence to the coupled cars, to determine if the trip is intact, and if brakes are automatically applied in any uncoupled car. These capabilities can be provided through an improved coupler system, designed and built by Foster-Miller Associates under a Bureau of Mines contract. Early in the program, a survey of rail haulage patents and literature was conducted. Manufacturers of couplers, mine cars and braking systems were contacted and information relevant to the remote control mine haulage application was collected. From this information evolved a working specification and a design concept. The key elements of the specification, shown in Table I, are the result of a detailed tradeoff study and considerable thought given to the specific problems encountered in the mining environment. A brief explanation of each element is as follows: Automatic Coupling - The couplers operate similarly with most already in underground use - they latch together when a trip is backed into a car intended for coupling.
