United States Antimony Corporation, at its Yankee Fork property in central Idaho, is currently using a combination of flotation, gravity-amalgamation, and concentrate cyanide leaching, silver sulfide precipitation, and activated charcoal loading to recover both silver and gold. Tine processes of flotation, milling, gravity concentration, amalgamation, concentrate leaching, sulfide precipitation and gold recovery via charcoal are discussed. The flow sheet illustrates the use of cyanidation as an alternative to shipment to a smelter.

This work was completed in a 440 KW pilot-scale combustor in preparation for a 50,000 Kg/hr industrial steam boiler limestone injection test program. The main objectives of the work were to: (1) identify the variables which affect sulfur capture, (2) determine the maximum sulfur removal, and (3) determine the effect of limestone addition on furnace operability and heat transfer. The variables which were identified as being important in sulfur capture were: Ca/S molar ratio, flue gas temperature at the limestone injection location, and limestone particle residence time. The maximum sulfur dioxide removal was 72%. The addition of limestone increased the particle deposition rate in the combustor; however, all deposits were easily removed by an air lance.

Horsepower requirement is recognized as a most important equipment characteristic. Other critical equipment characteristics will be isolated and analyzed by traditional operations research techniques, using off-highway trucks as an archetype. A computer search technique has been developed, employing various production and cost analyses. With this model, the optimum combination of horsepower, capacity, and velocity can be found, minimizing handling cost per ton. An example of the program's use and interpretation of its results will conclude the paper.

The sedimentary western phosphate deposits of Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming tend to be calcareous and generally carry a significant amount of dolomite along with collophanite. In some cases, such as the Smokey Canyon Mine, Afton, Wyoming, the ore will also contain mudstone, and in this case the aluminosilicate minerals (clay, feldspar, etc.) together with some dolomite are floated from the collophanite in column flotation cells with an amine in order to meet product specifications (31 % P205) (Service et al.). In other cases, such as the SF Phosphates Limited Mine, Vernal, Utah, the ore is treated by traditional fatty acid flotation of the collophanite with mechanical flotation cells (Weber, 1986). Preliminary tests have now been conducted to evaluate air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) technology for the flotation of western phosphate ore. For this preliminary study, samples were taken from the hydrosizer overflow stream (18-21 % P205) at the SF Phosphates Limited Plant in Vernal, Utah for scavenger flotation testing with the 2-inch ASH system in laboratories at the University of Utah. Selected design and operating variables are being studied, and the initial results show that satisfactory separations can be achieved by high-capacity ASH flotation at appropriate operating conditions. For example, with single-stage ASH flotation 80% recovery can be obtained with a scavenger concentrate grade of about 26% P2O5. These results are comparable to, or better than, those obtained at SF plant operations with conventional flotation cells and suggest that ASH flotation technology can be used to good advantage in the phosphate industry. Of course, research should be continued to consider other process streams, optimize the separation efficiency, and evaluate larger diameter ASH units.

Barite Worldwide barite production for 1985 decreased 1.3%, while US barite production increased 1.4%, according to US Bureau of Mines statistics. The increase in US production is attributed to heavy demand for oil and gas drilling during the first quarter and an unrealized heavy expected demand in oil and gas markets for the last quarter. Nevada accounted for 82.1% of the 807 kt (890,000 st) of barite produced in the US last year, according to the Bureau. Other producing states were California, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, Montana, Tennessee, and Washington. In 1985, the US imported 1.8 Mt (2 million st) of crude barite and 64 kt (71,000 st) of ground barite. China led the way with 43.3% of the total. Imports from India accounted for 21.6%; Morocco, 15.5%; and Thailand, 5.6%. The 1.8 Mt (2 million st) of crude barite imported is an 18.8% increase over 1984. Apparent consumption of barite for 1985 was about 2.6 Mt (2.9 million st), a 15.7% increase from 1984. Due to very low drilling rig activity during the last quarter of 1985, actual consumption is probably less as crude barite inventories at mines and plants increased. According to the Bureau, 90% of barite consumed in 1985 was for the oil and gas market. Paints, rubber, glass, and other chemical uses consumed the other 10%. With the price of oil falling dramatically early in 1986, the outlook for oil and gas drilling looks to be significantly lower than 1985. This lower demand for barite, coupled with the high year-end inventories, should lower both imports and domestic production. Significant lower prices on imported barite are expected, especially from China, Morocco, and India. This also could further lower US production of barite this year.

"The design of an appropriate pre-grouting program can be the difference between a successful tunnel construction and an expensive on-the-go repair. However, current grout design relies heavily on rulesof- thumb and outdated charts. The geotechnical investigation is rarely targeted towards grouting design and the final grouting decisions are made based on fines content or soil classification. The current paper presents an experimental study performed to determine the optimal grout for a tunnel in soft ground below the ground water table (GWT). The testing program consisted of sieve analysis and undrained static triaxial tests on reconstituted sonic samples. Rheological tests were used to compare the different grout mixes and identify best candidates before performing one-dimensional permeation tests. Pressure and volume measurements during the permeation tests, along with the unconfined compression strength results on the permeated soils, helped evaluate the filtration potential for the different grouts and select the optimal grout.INTRODUCTIONConstruction of the Millwoods Double Barrel Replacement Project commenced in 2009 and was expected to be completed by 2015. To facilitate ongoing city development in south Edmonton, the City implemented construction of a major sanitary trunk network along 91st Street and 30th Avenue. The project involved the design and construction of approximately 1.2 miles (2 km) of 7.8-ft (2,400 mm) sanitary tunnel and 2.1 miles (3.4 km) of 11.5-ft. (3,500 mm) and 9.5-ft. (2,900 mm) storm tunnel. Part of the project also involved the conversion of the existing double barrel storm and sanitary trunk to full sanitary service, and reconnecting the local storm sewers from the double barrel pipe to the new storm tunnel. The tunnels range in depth from 26-ft. (8 m) to 115-ft. (35 m) and are being installed using a one pass system with precast concrete segmental liners."

The Groveland Mine. Concentrator and Pellet Plant are located in Dickinson County in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The construction of the Groveland Mine in 1959 was the first United States operation for the Hanna Mining Company in mining and beneficiating low grade iron formations. (1) The plant produced concentrates at 675,000 lt/yr. (746,600 mt/yr.) which was used as sinter feed in the steel industry from 1959 to 1963. Upon completion of a pelletizing plant in April, 1963 production increased to 1.6 million lt/yr (1.77 million mt/yr) of pellets. After the plant expansion, mill capacity increased to 2.2 million 1t/yr (2.43 million mt/yr.), producing 2.0 million It/yr (2.23. million mt/yr.) of pellets assaying 63.0% iron and 7.0% silica. (1) Prior to April, 1971 the concentrator operated with a flowsheet consisting of spirals and a petroleum sultonate iron notation circuit. This was presented in a paper by R. R. Smith and E. E. Sougstad, "Flotation at the Groveland Mine" in the 50th Anniversary Volume entitled "Froth Flotation". The ore body at the Groveland Mine consists basically of two types of iron formation (34% total iron, 20% magnetic iron head), the most abundant of which is a bedded magnetite-chert-silicate rock. This is intermingled to varying degrees with non-bedded to poorly bedded hematite-clastic quartz-chert rock. (1) In developing the Groveland flowsheet, Humphrey spirals were used because of their ability to produce a coarse size concentrate at a low cost. Tests run in the lab and pilot plant on the Groveland ore showed a. spiral weight recovery in the 27 to 33% range. (2) However as the ore body was opened up, it became evident that the most abundant ore type did not liberate at the coarse size fraction needed for spirals. Plant recoveries for the first five years operating the spirals only averaged from 10 to 15% weight recovery. In 1971 the weight recovery on the spirals had dropped to a low of 5%. To increase iron recovery and at the same time increase plant capacity with the least effect on the present operations the mill flaw-sheet proceeded from a spiral-notation circuit to an all flotation circuit to a magnetic separator-flotation circuit. During this changeover the concentrate grade also had to be improved to meet market demands. To do this the following changes evolved

The U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) is currently conducting a national program to survey for uranium the conterminous United States and Alaska by 1980 using airborne and surface techniques. This paper discusses the techniques used and some of the results of airborne surveys conducted to date by Geodata International, Inc. Airborne gamma radiation and the earth's magnetic field data are measured to provide data leading to regions potentially more favorable for the exploration and discovery of uranium ore. High-sensitivity radiometric and magnetic field data have been gathered from an aircraft with an average surface altitude of 400 feet (Figure 1). Under most conditions, data are usable up to an aircraft surface elevation of about 1250 feet where limitations will be discussed. Results of data analysis under GJO-1632, GJ0-1644, GJO-1654 and GJO-1663 will be discussed.

The challenge of mining coal seams having a pitch of 30 degrees is one not frequently found in the United States, due primarily to the scarcity of such deposits. However, in the Thompson Creek District in Pitkin, Colorado, such a challenge exists to produce high quality medium volatile coking coal, and development of a longwall system is underway. The deposits under consideration are those of the Anschutz Corporation Inc. of Denver, Colorado, which are not in a virgin state. The properties were originally mined by the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation from 1894-1907, and by the Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Corp. from 1953-1966. Approximately five and one half million tons of coal have been mined by the above companies, attesting to its quality. The cessation of operations in both instances was occasioned by economics. Both companies employed a room and pillar system of mining, but being denied the use of high capacity mining and loading machinery because of the excessive pitch of the coal seam. This resulted in an unfavorable productivity expressed as output per man-shift, and thus the high cost of production occasioned by hand loading and semi-mechanization dictated cessation of operations. INITIAL PRECONDITIONS To solve tile problem of using the potential reserves of the different coal ranks efficiently (the coal reserves being many times superior in quantity to those of natural gas and oil) one must realise an integrated estimation of the coalfields' and coal deposits' reserves. The actuality of this problem increased especially in the recent years, when the Russian coal industry is being restructured. A structural reorgaisation of this industry, in order to in- crease its efficiency, covers a large spectrum of social and economic problems, comprising a withdrawal from mining the coal reserves that are unsafe from the standpoint of economy and labour protection. According to the information supplied by the 'Rossoogol' company, the Russian coal industry, accounting for abut a fifth of the world coal reserves, has a rather unsafe resource base, for about 5% of the reserves involved in mining do not correspond to the world practice conditions, regarding the coal grade, thickness, geological conditions, proneness to coal and gas outburst hazards. These concern first of all the Moscow, Kizelovsk and Donetsk coal basins, the Prokopievsk-Kiselevsk district of the Kuzbas basin and several other coalfields. Thus, the problem of efficient potential coal reserves' utilization calls for a paramount solution of two basic problems, namely: a) a comparative coalfields' and sections evaluation, and their ranging, in accordance with their industrial importance; b) choosing the 'active' reserves good to be efficiently mined under the present-day conditions. PRINCIPLES OF EVALUATION The investigations that had been carried out make it possible to formulate the following basic principles of the coalfields' reserves' estimation (or assessment). 1. The necessity, possibility and expediency of coal reserves' industrial exploitation are determined by a set of natural, technical, technological, practical, economic, environmental and social factors, thus calling for an integrated and gradual approach to problem solving. 2. One cannot consider the results of same reserves' estimation as being invariable because the former depend both upon constant (mainly natural) and market demands for different grades of coal (those of different power engineering and technological situations), capital investments, material and labour resources, economic (price-forming), technical, technological, environmental and other factors. 3. The rational size and sequence of the operating mines' and reserve sections' resources' involvement into mining depend upon the final aim of posing the problem, whose variants may be (the corresponding limitations being considered) providing for a maximum run-of-mine output (these essentially featuring the past stages of the industry's evolution); providing for a maximum efficiency, measured possibly by the specific or absolute indices of profits an expenses, labour productivity e. al. ; providing for a maximum extraction (maximum integrate utilization) of the known reserves. In this case an important park goes to the economic evaluation (or assessment) of useful application of the by-products being extracted (methane, mine water, rack) compared to the expenses necessary for their utilization. Regarding the steam coal (posing the problem any way it be possible), and extreme limit to the absolute non-efficiency of the coal reserves' exploitation may be posed, using the proportion of energy obtained from the possible amount of the coal to be extracted to the energy consumption necessary to extract, prepare, haul and consume this amount of coal. 4. The most reliable and efficient solutions providing for opening the reserves can be obtained for group of mines, rather than at the level of an individual mine section or an individual mine because it is only in the former case that the possibilities to re- distribute the expenses necessary to develop the good for mining and worse sections and seams can be realized to the greatest extent. Therefore the prospective approach to be considered is the one providing for an integrated organization and choice of the optimum combination of the variants of the ways to use the mines in operation and the free sections of the region in order to satisfy the growing up requirements for coal rather than the one providing for individual mine sections' resources' evaluation. 5. The future possibility and expediency of coal reserves' industrial exploitation will depend upon the prospects to implant at the mines in operation and reserve sections new engineering and technological elements and coal extraction technologies which may essentially change the actual idea concerning the coal reserves worth of being developed in an efficient way. For example, reserves not available to be exploited using conventional coal extraction technology may be regarded as potential resources for in situ gasification, e. g. the operating mines' reserves (non-commercial and non-mined commercial ones), balance and outside balance reserves of the free sections having proved not available to be mined using conventional coal-extraction technologies, as well as the non-extracted reserves of the abandoned and closed mines.

Introduction From the days of the Spanish in the eighteenth century, Colorado's San Juan mining district has attracted miners and public interest. The Spanish left behind names - San Juans, La Plata, Animas, legends of lost mines, and the remains of a few scattered mining operations. They came, but did not stay. Again in 1860-61, as a spinoff of the Pike's Peak gold rush, prospectors climbed the mountains and descended into the canyons searching for gold. They found some, not enough to convince them to remain and confront the isolation, often hostile environment and the Utes, who rightfully felt this to be their home. Not until the 1870s did miners come to stay. In their wake little camps grew in the high valleys and squeezed into narrow canyons. Nowhere else in Colorado were there more rugged mountains, a higher average elevation, nor a climate that one old Swede said was "three months of mighty late fall and nine months of winter." The San Juans proved eventually to be a mineral treasure chest. At the moment, however, the prospectors sought gold. Then they discovered silver deposits and the first rush was on. It got started just in time to be completely overcome by the Leadville excitement. At Leadville, investors almost fell over themselves to buy claims and stock in the hopes of becoming another millionaire like Leadville's own Horace Tabor. The San Juaners could only look from the sidelines and speculate how it might have been had fate been kinder. Fate was seldom kind, as these pioneers quickly discovered. From the mid-1870s on, the San Juaners wrestled with some major problems. And the fate of their district rode in the balance. The problems they faced were similar to those of other Colorado districts, compounded by their geographic isolation. Every mining district needed the best transportation system available, experienced investors combined with sound investment, and mineral reserves to develop. The San Juans offered the last in abundance. It was hoped the first two would appear. Railroads - much needed transportation link Nothing was more desired than railroad connections, the penultimate nineteenth century form of transportation. Colorado's own, the Denver & Rio Grande, resolved the issue with its mountain-hugging narrow gauge. As early as the mid-1870s, the D&RG dreamed of tapping this potentially lucrative market in southwestern Colorado. A national economic depression and then the Leadville silver excitement prevented immediate construction. Not until 1879-80 did survey crews start work.

The project involves the construction of a new aqueduct tunnel by an Earth Pressure Balance TBM tunnel for the Novaliches-Balara Aqueduct No 4 (NBAQ4) project in Metro Manila. It comprises a 7.3 km long and 3.1 m internal diameter tunnel that can deliver up to 1,000 MLD of raw water and the tunnel passes under urban residential and urban populated areas adjacent to and along Commonwealth Avenue. A new reservoir intake structure was constructed in the La Mesa reservoir by a cofferdam and the TBM breakthrough connected the reservoir to the outlet surge shaft structure and the downstream pipe network system connecting to the Balara Water Treatment Plant. The TBM incorporated a double articulated head configuration to allow tight 80 m radius curves to navigate some of the difficult alignment considerations. The alignment passed very close to some existing foundations for MRT7 and needed to clear several tight curves to remain within government land ownership. The project excavated through the local Guadalupe weak rock formations and there was minimal ground movements observed as a result of the work.

Perfluoromethylcyclohexane (PMCH), a member of the perfluorocarbon tracer group of compounds, has been shown to be a viable supplement to the widely used tracer gas sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). This viability stems from the fact that PMCH can be used concurrently with SF6 while maintaining adequate chromatographic separation and comparable sensitivity during analysis. However, the release of PMCH in an underground mine ventilation system is challenging due to its physical characteristics. While SF6 exists as a gas at room temperature and pressure and can be accurately released by a variety of means, PMCH exists as a volatile liquid at room temperature and pressure, preventing it from being deployed in a similar manner. One method to release PMCH is to use a permeation plug passive release vessel (PPRV), which allows for the controlled release of the gas. This paper presents the results of a study evaluating various preparation techniques, plug thicknesses and plug materials of an aluminumvessel PMCH release source, so that a source appropriate for the mine scale may be developed.

The paper presents the results of a study which involved collection and analysis of airborne pollutant concentration data in two producing underground room and pillar metal mines which use diesel powered equipment in the area near the face. The results include the concentrations of CO2, CO, NO, NO2 and respirable particulate matter measured with the latest portable instruments, and the carbon and hydrogen contents of the particulate matter samples determined by combusting them in a Elemental Analyzer. The carbon and hydrogen contents are used to estimate the amount of diesel particulate matter in the mine ambient air. The short term grab sample concentration data, although not suitable for determining compliance with ACGIH Threshold Limit Values (TLVs), are related to the TLVs so that they may be compared conveniently. Lognormal frequency distributions and the arithmetic mean of the concentration measurement data are used to compare different mine situations. Conclusions are drawn as to which pollutants are most important to control under actual mine production conditions.

Some of the members will probably ask themselves what close relationship exists between hydro-metallurgy and a wet scrubber, but we are sure that as soon as deeper thought is given to the matter it will be realised how vital scrubbing, operations are in metallurgical plants. In ordinary metallurgical installations or pyro-metallurgical processes ore concentrates are first of all shifted from place to place and dust is created. In other cases the ores or concentrates are crushed or dried or roasted, and in each one of these operations dust and fumes, are created. All suspended particles and fumes originating from the abovementioned conditions not only, in many instances, provide health hazards which disrupt production and endanger the personnel in the plant, but also are the source of economic losses through extra maintenance and wear to moving machinery due to abrasion and corrosion. Further losses are incurred by the waste of fine, very often valuable, components. The Party who once said that in several metallurgical plants the bulk of the profits was discharged into the atmosphere by the stack wasn't stretching the truth. There is a place in Africa where a gold producing concern used to lose over 5 oz. of fine gold per day out of a total production of 3000 oz. per month. In another instance, copper concentrate going as high as 80% Cu was discharged into the atmosphere at the rate of 4 tons per day. Realising the value of removing and collecting solids and fumes created in metallurgical plants, a thorough study was made of the available plant and equipment offered on the market. Some units were found very efficient, but very expensive; some others also very efficient but with temperature and maintenance limitations. Some others were also efficient but prohibitive from the point of running costs.

This paper identifies and formulates the probabilistic nature of underground coal face operations using the Semi-Markovian theory. Through this theory the probability of coal flow from a face is obtained for any given time t of a shift. These probabilities are used for determining the capacity and operating policy of a surge tank located at the shaft bottom.

As a Rock Mechanics investigator, the author has, Over his career, attempted to use his best knowledge in developing better rock control fixtures. Based on the experience of nine years of development of friction rock stabilizers, in 1980 he decided to launch a new investigation to develop a unique roof support fixture which would fit the coal mining market. The largest single user of roof bolts in the world is the American coal mining industry, historically using up to 100 million fixtures per year. In 1989 they used approximately 82 million fixtures.

In order to predict and minimize detrimental production problems due to the recycling of process water in sulfide ore processing, the influence of major species, calcium and sulfate in process water on sphalerite flotation was investigated through Hallimond tube flotation, zeta potential, diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements using sphalerite mineral sample. Assessment of process water species in flotation was done using deionized water, process water and simulated water containing calcium and sulfate ions in experiments. Hallimond flotation shows increased sphalerite float-ability in process water compared to deionized water, but no significant effect on the presence of calcium and sulfate ions in deionized water using isobutyl xanthate as a collector. The presence of calcium ions reduced the sphalerite?s negative zeta potential, while at higher concentrations, a charge reversal occurred, at about pH 11. FTIR and XPS studies revealed the presence of surface-oxidized sulfoxy and carbonate species on sphalerite at pH 11.5 in deionized water, process water and water containing calcium and sulfate ions. These surface species do not influence xanthate adsorption.

Coal is the nation's most abundant fossil energy resource and serves as the primary fuel for the U.S. electric-power industry. However, its continued and expanded use is often challenged by the nature and amount of its associated impurities, such as mineral matter, sulfur, and trace elements. The moderate- to high-sulfur content of many U.S. coals is of particular concern today as potentially more stringent regulations requiring further reductions in sulfur dioxide emissions are being considered. The most prevalent method currently employed to control SO2 emissions from coal-burning facilities is post-combustion flue-gas desulfurization. However, physical coal cleaning (a.k.a. beneficiation, preparation) methods can also be effective in removing sulfur and ash impurities from coal prior to combustion. In a typical physical cleaning operation, raw coal is crushed to about 50-mm (2-inch) topsize, and then screened into coarse, intermediate, and fine size fractions. Crushing liberates some of the ash-forming minerals, including the portion of inorganic sulfur (pyritic) not chemically bound to the coal matrix. The percentage of impurities liberated generally increases as the coal particle size is reduced. Coarse- and intermediate-sized coal particles are typically subjected to specific gravity-based cleaning methods, while fine-sized (less than 0.5-mm) coal particles are beneficiated using froth flotation, a technique based on surface property differences. Greater cleaning potential exists at finer sizes because of increased liberation of impurities, but this potential is not fully realized because of inefficiencies associated with fine particle separation using state-of-the-art coal cleaning technologies.
