The lack of progress in controlling pulmonary diseases such as pneumoconiosis cases in recent years necessitates additional studies on dust generation and the characterization of airborne dust. Studies are underway by a NIOSH-sponsored project to observe the characteristics of the dust generated by pick cutters under various wear levels. This research performed a full-scale linear-cutting-test matrix on eight coal samples with various bit penetrations, spacing, and wear conditions. The specific energy and resulting PSD (particle size distribution) of airborne dust and material left at the cutting surface were measured and analyzed. The dust concentration was determined using the NMAM (NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods) 0600 method. For fines, the PSD was characterized using Laser Diffraction, measuring percent channel and aerodynamic diameter, while Imagej, a virtual sieving application, was used for larger particles. The results show that for a new bit, as the cutting depth and spacing increase, the specific energy and dust generation decrease. The size and shape of the dust particles have been analyzed, and the observed trends are discussed in this paper.

Loudoun Water’s Quarry A (Milestone Reservoir) project involves conversion of a rock quarry to a billion-gallon raw water reservoir. The project includes a new 40 MGD pump station, deep intake shaft, and three drill and blast intake tunnels for accessing the reservoir. Due to concerns regarding constructability and construction risks, the project design was paused while a Construction Manager At-Risk (CMAR) contractor was procured. The CMAR contractor was engaged collaboratively with the design team to provide risk and constructability input for refining the design. Aspects of the original design, design modifications, and benefits of the CMAR collaboration will be presented.

Incident investigation is of utmost importance in most high-risk industries. This study was undertaken to study the content of past investigation reports to determine the effectiveness of the incident investigations. The study uses a semi-quantitative method to assess the effectiveness of incident investigations in the Ghanaian mining industry by evaluating the quality of past investigation reports. The assessment tool consists of 5 elements with several indicators and rating scales for assessing the quality of an investigation report as a measure of the effectiveness of the investigation. The method was applied to 304 investigation reports of 3 Ghanaian large-scale gold mines, and the results correlated with incidence rates of the mines to determine if any relationship existed. The results showed that the mines differ significantly in the quality of their investigation reports, suggesting differences in the effectiveness of their investigations. In addition, the incidence rates of the mines negatively correlated with some elements of the assessment tool. In general, the method was found useful and revealed areas where improvement is needed. INTRODUCTION The importance of learning from incidents is well documented in the literature. For instance, some scholars regard learning from incidents as important for improving safety [1,2]. Thus, many organisations spend considerable resources in identifying lessons from incidents and subsequently on the process of improvement that follows the identification of lessons. It is therefore important for such organisations to determine the effectiveness of their learning from incidents processes, in order to identify specific areas where improvements are needed, so that interventions can be as specific as possible. The learning from incidents process models the plan-act-check-do approach of management systems, often consisting of four major stages, namely; data collection and incident analysis, planning interventions, implementing interventions and follow-ups and evaluation [3,2]. The investigating and analysis of incidents have been regarded as one of the vital stages of the learning process since it is the stage where lessons are identified [3,2,4]. It has also been noted elsewhere in the literature that results of the previous stage of the learning process are important for the next stage [3]. For example, ineffective incident analyses could result in the planning of ineffective remedial measures. One of the primary aims of incident investigations is to identify lessons from previous incidents which when implemented can prevent future recurrences or minimise the effects of future incidents. There is thus the need for organisations to assess the quality of their investigations periodically since it is one of the means they adopt to improve safety and the quality of remedial measures to some extent depends on the effectiveness of the investigations. Although previous studies [5,2] have assessed the effectiveness of the learning process, and some aspects of the learning process, such as incidents reporting, there is less focus on the effectiveness of incident investigations. The research described in this paper was therefore conducted to contribute to this gap, focusing more closely on incident investigation reports.

Mining accidents due to inrushing water are caused by sudden changes in seepage owing to structural damage to key strata of the aquiclude. The backfill mining method can be used to control the movement of the strata, weaken the evolution of fractures owing to damage by key aquiclude strata (KAS), and control the channel for inrushing water. This study develops a mechanical model of a composite beam on a non-uniform elastic foundation of the KAS by analyzing the coupling relationship between the filling body and the key water-resisting layer of the aquiclude. Equations of the deflection-induced deformation, bending moment, and maximum tensile stress of the KAS are analyzed, formulae to calculate the allowable tensile stress and backfill materials’ compaction ratio (BMCR) to ensure structural stability are derived, and are used to provide the critical BMCR for their structural instability. The results of field measurements show that the subsidence of the roof was 600–700 mm with an average BMCR of 80.63%. Damage to the overlying strata was controlled to ensure safe mining and the disposal of solid waste from the aquifer. The research here is useful for ensuring safety during mining while protecting water resources.

This research, sponsored at Stanford Research Institute by the Grand Junction Operations Office of the U.S, Atomic Energy Commission, was an outgrowth of the concern that presently-known ore reserves may be inadequate to meet the projected demands of nuclear power reactors. The original program at SRI was to design a comprehensive geological information system and use it to store and analyze the very great quantity of data needed to estimate uranium ore reserves. Study of the problem showed that it could be solved only by use of modern electronic data processing techniques, so such a comprehensive system was designed and tested. The system test was satisfactory, but input lead time and total expense were shown to be too great for the system to be practicable for the AEC under present circumstances. Thus, based on results of the earlier research, a specialized and simplified procedure for predicting approximate uranium ore reserves was devised. The prediction is based on general geology of specific area cells of the earth, in order to provide complete volume coverage; the strata in these ores are evaluated for uranium ore favorability on the basis of a few selected criteria in order to allow rapid data input. Since the bulk of U.S. reserves are in clastic host rocks only such strata are considered in this work. This paper describes the structure and some details of the resource system and how it was tested in rn area of the western United States.

Reverse cationic flotation is the most widely utilized flotation method for concentrating iron ore. In this process, quartz is often floated with ether amines (R?(OCH2)3?NH2) partially neutralized with acetic acid. However, it is well known that the cationic flotation of quartz does not work well if a certain amount of slime is present in the ore slurry. To improve flotation performance, starch is often added to the flotation feed to selectively flocculate and depress the iron minerals and sodium silicate is used to disperse the silica gangue. The present study was conducted to improve the efficiency of iron ore flotation by the use of a new type of depressant for clay and iron minerals, Georgia Pacific (GP) clay binder. The GP clay binder minimizes slime adsorption on quartz and hematite particles by agglomerating clay particles to reduce their surface area. It also helps depress hematite flotation due to its unique chelating action on iron ions. The results from this study show that the GP clay binder is an effective depressant in iron ore flotation. When it was used as a substitute for corn starch, it increased concentrate grade from 60.78% to 67.67% and increased iron recovery from 71.96% to 72.90%. The combined use of GP clay binder with corn starch produced even better flotation performance, increasing iron recovery to 78.15%, while the concentrate grade remained stable at 67.08%. Chemical mining is the in situ extraction of metals from ores located within the confines of a mine (broken or fractured ore, stope fill, caved material, ores in permeable zones) or in dumps, prepared ore heaps, slag heaps, and tailing ponds on the surface. These materials represent an enormous, untapped, potential source of all types of metals. The field of chemical mining, now in its infancy, encompasses the preparation of ore for subsequent in-place leaching, the flow of solutions and ionic species through rock masses and within rock pores, the leaching of minerals with inexpensive and regenerable lixiviants under prevailing conditions of the in-place environment, the generation and regeneration of such solutions, and the recovery of metals or metal compounds from the metal-bearing liquors. It is not inconceivable that eventually our ore reserves will consist largely of low-grade, refractory, and inaccessible new deposits and low-grade zones near previously worked deposits, caved and gob-filled stopes, waste dumps, tailing ponds, and slag-heaps. Chemical mining promises economic recovery from these types of deposits. Before it can come of age, however, a much better understanding is needed concerning its chemical and physical aspects.

INTRODUCTION The Alchem trona mine, owned and operated by Allied Chemical Corp., is located approximately 32 km (20 miles) west of the town of Green River, and 8 km (5 miles) north of Interstate 80 in southwest Wyoming. Trona, a naturally occuring sodium sesquicarbonate (NaCO3 • NaHCO3 • 2H2O), is used for the production of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), commonly known as soda ash. Present annual US consumption of soda ash is approximately 9.07 Mt (10 million st), out of which approximately 7.3 Mt (8 million st) is produced from the Wyoming trona mines. About 44% of soda ash is consumed by the glass industry; 3 % by exports; and the remaining portion by paper, chemical, soap, textile, and nonferrous industries. Allied Chemical operates an underground mine at an average depth of about 488 m (1600 ft). There are three other trona mines in the area operated by FMC Corp., Stauffer Chemical Corp., and Texasgulf Inc. (see Fig. 1). Allied Chemical became interested in southwest Wyoming trona deposits in the early 1940s. Explora¬tion work was begun in 1959 with the acquisition of federal leases. Exploitation of the reserves began in 1968. Two shafts, one 6.1 m (20 ft) and another 3.7 m (12 ft), were completed prior to 1968. The 6.1-m (20-ft) diam service shaft is divided in half by a cur¬tain wall, with one half used for men and material and the other for ventilation as a return air shaft. During the period from 1968 to 1974, the 3.7-m (12-ft) shaft was used as production shaft with two 7.3-t (8-st) skips. Due to the increased demand for soda ash, plant and mine expansions were completed during 1974. Under this expansion, the material handling system capacity was increased by constructing a new 2721-t (3000-st) capacity ore bin, sinking a 6.1-m (20-ft) diam produc¬tion shaft, and installing a friction hoist with two 22.7-t (25-st) skips. The Alchem mine manpower is 484 employees and about 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st) of trona was produced during 1976. Three different mining systems are used at the Alchem mine: conventional, continuous, and longwall. Allied Chemical introduced its first longwall unit in 1973, which was also the first longwall system introduced in the Wyoming trona district. At present, four conventional, seven continuous, and two longwall units are in operation. This equipment is operated in ten production areas. GEOLOGY The bedded trona and trona-halite in the Green River basin of southwestern Wyoming is a major re¬source for the nation. There are 25 beds that exceed 0.9 m (3 ft) in thickness and underlie areas of about 2590 km2 (1000 sq miles). There are other minor beds that range in thickness from 0.3 to 1.2 m (1 to 4 ft). Allied Chemical's Alchem mine is located in bed 17. The trona bed numbering system starts at the lowest elevation and increases upwards. The trona beds are in the Wilkens Peak member of the Green River formation. The Green River formation was deposited in a lake that began in early Eocene as a large body of fresh water, shrank in size and became saline, and then became fresh water again. The sedi¬ment during the saline phase of the lake, which includes the trona beds, is called the Wilkens Peak member. The underlying freshwater lake deposit is called the Tipton member and includes a 25.9-m (85-ft) sand unit which is a high pressure, low permeability aquifer. The over¬lying sediment is called the Laney shale. The Green River formation is underlaid by the Wasatch formation and overlaid by the Bridger formation (see Fig. 2). The structure of the beds in the area of the Allied Chemical mine is mostly postdepositional asymmetrical folds of small amplitude. These folds range in size of 3 to 6.1 m (10 to 20 ft) to as much as 45.7 m (150 ft). The trend of the folds is northwesterly with the north¬east flank of the anticlines having a steep dip and the southwest having gentle dips. Trona bed 17 varies in thickness from 2.4 to 3.4 m (8 to 11 ft) over the 93.2 km2 (36 sq miles) holdings of Allied Chemical and is flat lying except for the rela¬tively minor folding and a negligible regional dip of about 0.017 rad (1°). How do you think the US Bureau of Mines closing will affect SME? The demise of the bureau represents a challenge, an opportunity and, above all, new responsibilities for our profession. A lot of good professionals are seeking new positions. A lot of worthwhile research is available for transfer to the private sector. Logic dictates that worthwhile projects of any defunded government activities should find support in the private sector. The bureau may be gone but its legacy is deeply rooted in the profession. The bureau’s contributions will be remembered as long as there are mines and miners. Its1994 research program was divided into three major areas: environ-mental technology; health, safety and mining technology; and minerals and materials science. There must be a place in either the government or private sector to continue these worthwhile activities.

Sulfides present in the troctolitic and footwall rocks are placed into one of three major zones (hornfels, cloud, and basal) on the basis of their stratigraphic position and mineralogy. Hornfels sulfides, enriched in Fe, represent remobilized sedimentary sulfide. Sulfides from the Cloud Zone are probably magmatic and are enriched in PGE, Cu, Ni, and Ag. The basal sulfides, composing most of the ore, resulted from contamination of the magma by remobilized sedimentary sulfide. The basal sulfides exhibit a differentiation trend in their mineralogy and chemistry. PGE, Cu, and Ag are enriched with increasing differentiation which is attributed to fractionation within an immiscible sulfide liquid.

FIPR-sponsored research will playa critical role in enhancing the competitiveness of the Florida phosphate industry as ore grade declines and environmental restrictions tighten. FIPR's program seeks to improve surface mining and pipeline transportation while reducing the energy cost for pumping phosphate matrix. The development of a reliable on-line analyzer and a modern process control strategy will result in improved processing efficiency. Significant improvement in overall efficiency will also be realized as the industry adopts column flotation technology. Economic acidulation of high-Insol rock will allow the industry to adopt simplified flotation flowsheets thereby reducing operating costs. Various applications of phosphogypsum would save the industry millions of dollars in constructing and closing gypsum stacks.

A gas–solid fluidized bed using magnetite particles is an effective methodology for coal beneficiation in the field of dry coal cleaning. Broadening the size range of magnetite used in the bed decreases medium preparation cost. In this study, a tapered fluidized bed was used to investigate a magnetite particle size range of −0.5 + 0.074 mm. The results showed that a tapered fluidized bed effectively strengthens mixing of magnetite with a wide size range (−0.5 + 0.074 mm). The results of beneficiation experiments indicated that with increasing tapered angle, separation efficiency increased and then decreased. The highest separation efficiency was obtained at a tapered angle of 10°. The optimal results showed that the ash content of the concentrate decreased from 31.82% to 12.33% with a probable error of 0.11, which indicated that a tapered fluidized bed was efficient to improve fine coal beneficiation performance.

The Nevada Test Site is located approximately 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, NY. The site was primarily used by the Department of Energy for the field testing of nuclear weapons and contaminated by several million cubic feet of low-level radioactive wastes, heavy metals, volatile and non-volatile organics, and explosive materials. Leaching and transportation of these contaminants are creating severe environmental problems. The purpose of this study is to examine pozzolan, a natural alumina-silicate mineral, as a possible replacement of the existing impermeable barriers (clays). In the first phase of this study, radionuclide sorption characteristics of pozzolan were investigated. This paper will present the results of the sorption tests for the target radionuclides.

The Bureau of Mines investigated technologies for determining the integrity of in situ leach mining wells. A self-contained trailer-mounted well integrity testing system (WITS) was designed and built to enable rapid testing of well casings for leaks as required by environmental regulations. The WITS utilizes two inflatable packers to seal off the entire casing length or any portion thereof. Water pressure is built between the packers to the desired test pressure, and the presence or absence of casing leaks is determined by monitoring the pressure drop between the packers. A winch and steel cable are used to run the packers in and out of the well. The WITS underwent an industry field test at the Irigaray in situ uranium leaching mine near Buffalo, WY. A total of 37 wells with an average depth of 225 ft (69 m) were tested at an average rate of four wells per 8-h shift with a two-person operating crew. This represents a 75-pct time savings and an 83-pct labor savings compared to the rigid-pipe method previously used at the mine, with which a three-person crew tested an average of one well per shift.

In designing very large excavated slopes which are becoming increasingly common in both mining and civil engineering projects, the most important decision of the engineer is the selection of a slope angle. The purpose of the geotechnical study of the slope is to ensure reasonable stability of the slope in the most economical way. Because the rock mass composing each slope is unique, there are no standard solutions for slope stability analysis. A practical solution is formulated from the basic geologic data, engineering properties of the rock, geometry of the slope, and ground water observations. Stability analysis consists of analyzing the forces causing and resisting slope failure. There are several methods of slope stability analysis. The limit equilibrium method evaluates the overall stability of the sliding mass just on the verge of slip, using some or all of the three equations of static equilibrium of a plane problem. The stress-strain relationships of the rock mass are not considered. Method of analysis include the assumption of the shape of the slip surface. Peterson (10) introduced the Swedish method of analysis in 1916, which is based on cylindrical sliding surfaces. Fellenius (4) in 1926 extended this method and introduced the method of slices. This method was refined by Bishop (I) in 1955 and later used by Morgenstern and Price (8) in 1965. In many cases layers of extremely soft strata or strata weakened by neutral stress cause failure to take place by translation along plane of weakness instead of by rotation on a circular surface. In this paper, a slope with a horizontal layer of weak meterial is selected for analysis. This is a usual case for open pit lignite mines where lignite seam may be non-cohesive and 'weaker than the overburden rock or a soft clay layer underlies the seam. It is also a common case of rock fill dams supported on a foundation stratum of clay where the strength of the clay layer is less than that of the rock fill. It is shown that utilizing this method, the location of potential failure surface and the value of the minimum factor of safety can be calculated directly and the trial computations of factors of safety for a number of assumed failure surfaces are not necessary.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has investigated methods for extracting metals from a variety of arsenic-containing smelter flue dusts. One proposed flowsheet includes a sulfuric acid leach, a cooling step to precipitate hydrated copper sulfate, and a reduction-precipitation of As2O3. Arsenic extractions greater than 90 pct were achieved, while copper extraction ranged from 50 to 85 pct under the conditions examined. Copper was removed from the leach solutions by crystallization followed by SO2 precipitation of arsenic which resulted in a 98 to 99.9 pct As2O3 product. Other metals, such as lead and zinc, were concentrated in the leach residue or in other byproduct streams for recovery of their valuable metal contents.

Reliable ore reserve estimates for deposits with highly skewed grade disributions are difficult tasks to perform. Although some recent geostatistical techniques are available to handle problems with these estimations, ordinary kriging or conventional interpolation methods are still widely used to estimate the ore reserves for such deposits. The estimation results can be very sensitive to the search parameters used during the interpolation of grades with these methods. This paper compares the ore reserve estimates from ordinary kriging using several cases in which certain search parameters are varied. The comparisons are extended to different mineralizations to show the changing effects of these parameters.

Conversion to trolley assist is a means of minimizing diesel fuel consumption, which in many mining situations offers a rapid payback of capital investment plus the inherent flexibility and maneuverability of truck shovel operation. When diesel electric truck shovel mining operation with trolley assist is compared to alternative mining methods such as conveyor systems, the trolley assist system can be easily justified in terms of return on investment, payback and increased productivity. A review of present technology, performance requirements and past experience in the mining industry has led to the development of a trolley assist system for diesel electric haulage trucks which, is proven in the mining environment, offers significant reduction in fuel consumption and increased productivity.

This paper is intended to give the reader an update on the work being done at the Mackay School of Mines about the fate of cyanide on precious metals mill tailings waste. During the last two years several tailings impoundments have been sampled and analyzed for total and free cyanides. From our sampling program we are beginning to learn valuable information concerning the fate of cyanides in precious metals mill wastes. Included in this paper is a detailed description of our sampling and analytical techniques. Also, some of the data obtained from five sites are given.

Large scale surface mining has a major impact on land use. Without reclamation, abandoned mining sites are usually less productive than before mining. With increasing and completetive land use demands in the United States, it becomes increasingly evident that multiple land use should be considered for all areas that will be mined, with special emphasis on coal, sand, gravel, and stone. The mining of these commodities affects the largest land areas and the latter two are commonly mined near population centers where high land-use pressures justify serious consideration of multiple use. Typically, sequential use will mean restoration of the mined land or at least transformation of the land into a useable state. Determination of land reclamation capability is a viable approach to planning reclamation of surface mined land. The natural resource base--geology, soil, and water--controls the type and intensity of land-use practices which can be sustained following mining. Evaluating physical limitations can eliminate consideration of uses which would severely impair the environment or which are impractical. This approach provides for an environmentally and economically sound land use at very little cost. In addition, it can save or make money for the mining company and landowner. Sand and gravel is an especially significant resource because it is mined throughout the entire country and commonly extracted near cities. Increasing urban growth and industrial activity require increased supplies of sand and gravel. This translates into expanded surface mining and an increase of disrupted land. Oftentimes this land is within an urban area and has potential for real estate or water-based activities.
