"Slope performance monitoring, dependable operational practices and ongoing collection of geologic data in openpit slopes all provide valuable information for quantifying potential steepening of subsequent slopes. Mining at the Goldstrike openpit has been ongoing since the early 1980s, having its share of slope instabilities. In areas where slopes have remained stable, consideration has been made for potential slope steepening of final walls.While technology can be efficient, interesting for collecting needed data, slope design fundamentals based on that data can be applied to create much added value.With the proper available equipment, steepening of bench face angles via presplit blasting is not an uncommon method for steepening of interramp slope angles. As an alternative at Goldstrike, the commonly used Modified Ritchie Criteria for empirical catch bench width has been adjusted, resulting in quantified, rock-specific formulas for bench width and rock fall berm placement. The result is an inter-ramp slope angle increase of 2° on a 305- m (1,000-ft) high slope, without the necessary purchases and procedural changes that would be required for presplit drilling and blasting. The result has shown significant net benefits through reduction in mined waste tons and an increase in gold reserves.LocationThe Goldstrike openpit is located in the Great Basin, on the northern end of the Carlin Trend gold belt in northeastern Nevada (Fig. 1). The mine has produced more than 1.2 kt (43 million oz) of gold during the past 30 years."

The 5180 m EPBM drive on the Lower Olentangy Tunnel (LOT) is predominantly within glacial overburden. To connect LOT with the existing OARS deep tunnel in limestone bedrock, the upper 15 m inside diameter Vine Street retrieval shaft telescopes down to 6.7 m in diameter and extends into the karstic Columbus Limestone to a depth of 51 m, where a 104 m SEM tunnel will connect to OARS shaft 6. Pre-excavation grouting was reuired prior to lower shaft excavation to reduce potentially high groundwater inows. This paper discusses the secant pile installation, grouting program, shaft excavation, and hydrogeologic observations.

Underground mine roof bolting is a crucial operation for miners’ safety and mine sustainability. Since roof bolting is a manual or human-supervised operation, miners’ safety is at risk due to dust or rock falls. Traditional machine learning algorithms have shown limitations to detecting drillable areas, mainly due to harsh lighting conditions. The authors propose an adaptive deep-learning framework for autonomous roof bolting. The proposed framework is based on implementing a binary semantic segmentation algorithm on color images to classify pixels that belong to rock from those that belong to non-rock. Significantly, the proposed framework implements deep learning semantic segmentation on images from traditional and neuromorphic vision sensors in underground mines. The performance of the proposed model shows an impressive accuracy level of at least 98% at a low number of training epochs with smooth learning curves. The high accuracy enables the implementation of autonomous roof bolting, greatly improving miners’ safety and operational efficiency while reducing human exposure to safety hazards. This research will advance the use of deep learning in mining automation and has the potential to revolutionize the traditional mining industry.

Standing supports have been used in coal mines for decades to enhance roof support capability. Sometimes standing supports are used as a tool to resist the lateral movement of spalled ribs. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are conducting a testing program for different types of standing supports (steel and timber) to investigate the effect of lateral loading on their vertical loading capacities and the factors affecting their lateral loading capacities. In this paper, the mine roof simulator (MRS), at the NIOSH Pittsburgh research facility, was used to determine the response of steel props to vertical and horizontal loadings. Finite element models (FEMs) were developed and verified using the tested steel props. To justify the testing program for testing standing supports with end-conditions of rock-like materials, the verified prop models were used to study the effect of a wide range of roof and floor materials (gray shale, shale, and claystone) on the critical buckling loads of the steel props. Also, several lateral loading scenarios were evaluated in which the steel props were laterally loaded at different heights. The critical buckling load for steel props setting up against a claystone roof and floor was found to be one-half of that shown by the MRS test where roof and floor platens are made of steel. Minimum prop performance was observed when the lateral load was applied at the mid-height of the steel prop, especially at small lateral displacement (less than 2 in).

Minnesota's mineral resources are widespread and diverse (Figure 1). In addition to the nation's largest iron and manganese reserves, the state contains sizeable vanadium, copper, and nickel resources. Recently it has been determined that the proterozoic unconformities in Minnesota have a favorable potential for uranium deposits. Finally, major potential exists in Minnesota's archean greenstone belts for gold, silver, and copper-zinc massive sulfides. Many of the state's mineral resources have been found in environmentally sensitive areas. This is not surprising since the natural forces associated with the formation of mineral deposits are often the same processes that create unusual landforms. For example, much of the state's copper-nickel is found within and adjoining the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) and Lake Superior. The history of mineral development on the Mesabi Iron Range has also created culturally sensitive areas. Early iron mining development required the workers to live close to their jobs, and mine wastes were dumped as near the mine as possible. Few, if any, foresaw the time when taconite would be economic to mine. Therefore, it is not unusual to find valuable taconite resources located under towns and waste dumps on the Mesabi Iron Range.

Natural graphite has been known for many centuries, having first been reported as a distinct mineral form by Gessner in 1565. At that time, graphite was used extensively as pencil "lead" because of the ease with which it marks paper. It is a black, unctuous material found as flakes, lumps, or needles in scattered locations throughout the world. The less crystalline, or "amorphous", natural graphites are thought to have been formed from coal under conditions of high temperature and pressure. The more crystalline varieties, such as those mined in Ceylon, probably were precipitated from molten solutions or were pyrolyzed from gaseous carbon compounds. Recognition of the good thermal and electrical conductivity of graphite, together with its highly refractory nature, led to an increasing number of appli¬cations for this material. Clay and pitch bonded natural graphite has been used in crucibles, refractories, foundry facings, and other high-temperature appli¬cations. These forms constitute the most important current uses for natural graphite in the United States. Other products containing natural graphite include batteries, lubricants, pencils, brake linings, etc.

New Nedre Fiskumfoss is a construction project in North Trøndelag, Namsen River. The purpose of the contract is construction of a new hydropower plant, that will phase out the existing power plant in the same waterfall. The contract consists of a tunnel system with cross sections from 16 m2 to 150 m2, powerhouse and transformer in rock caverns, 6 shafts and major works with inlet and outlet below river level. Technical challenges consist of demanding design on rock extraction, cofferdams, solid constructions with challenging design and demanding rebar work, as well as restrictions and unpredictable water flow in a national salmon river.

"One of the main problems for storing of the tailings is acidity occurrence due to several factors such as existence of sulfuric minerals and also the pollution in seepage waters by mobilization of metal ions, which holds great risks in terms of environmental regulations. Because of these specified reasons, tailing materials to be used in a SPD formula should have comply with some specifications. Among these properties; oxygen content, temperature, matrix suction and pH are the most important parameters. In the study, the relationships between the parameters mentioned are investigated to reveal optimum paste design layout. The lowest amount of seepage water obtained from the paste layers in the pilot cabinet was found as 2150 ml from 3rd layer. As for the maximum seepage water and the average of the all 11 layers were found as 4909 ml from 6th layer and 3273 ml respectively. The reactions occurring according to the oxidation, as seen at seepage water of second and third layers, decreased the pH of system to the under of 7 value. Additionally, when the seepage water of first layer’s EC value is 2.93 mS/cm, the EC value of second layer is increased at 3.54 mS/cm. The other parameters are evaluated with the obtained results of the tests to determine the optimum storing conditions for SPD.INTRODUCTION Conventional waste disposal methods, although widely used, pose great environmental risks. One of the most important issues is acid mine drainage (AMD). Tailings of metallic mines contain heavy metals, aggressive chemicals and hazardous materials. In the presence of oxygen and water, an oxidation reaction can occur, causing a decrease in pH of the environment, and heavy metals that are present in the environment can dissolve easily. Subsequently, heavy metals can pollute underground water basins, creating a great amount of danger for the ecology and potable water resources. Another important risk associated with conventional waste disposal methods is accidents related to the waste dam. Higher volumes of water and tailings (usually 15% solids and 85% water by weight) are sent to waste dams, making it very difficult to control the stability of the dam under conditions such as static and dynamic loads (seismic activities, vibrations caused by blasting, etc.), flooding, and seepage. In case of an accident or failure, the spread of great amounts of mud containing hazardous chemicals and heavy metals can harm the environment of the dam site significantly (Bascetin et al., 2014). In the paste technology, depending on the type of ore, tailings used in the paste mixture can contain sulphide minerals (such as pyrite and pyrrhotite). These minerals are known to be reactive with water and oxygen to produce acidity (sulphuric acid)."

Ladies and Gentlemen: It is a distinct pleasure and honor to appear before you representing the railway industry as I do, but there is a much closer personal relationship. I am a graduate Mining Engineer and worked in the coal industry for 15 years prior to becoming a railroader only 4 ½ years ago. I have been a member of AIME most of my adult working life and am currently active in the Washington, D. C. Section. While having been in the railway industry only a short time, I have become involved during the recent period of innovation and development of the new railroad technique known as unit train service. I have had the privilege of helping to work out a number of unit train movements to both electric utility companies and to a major steel concern, handling coal from mines on the Southern Railway to the consuming plants. On Southern, our unit trains are all of what I shall describe as shuttle train operations whereas within the railroad industry today several types of service are characterized as unit train service and many don't offer comparable efficiencies.

Based on the limiting-equilibrium analysis of roof processive caving in hanging wall caving method and the critical medium column theory, a new model of subsidence prediction caused by sublevel caving mining method was proposed in this study, considering the drawing influence and the dynamic process of filling granular media. Meanwhile, the distribution rules for lateral pressure with different orebody dip were studied under drawing ore, and subsequently complemented the model. This model indicated that the surface subsidence scope decreased as the unit weight of crack rock and the orebody dip increased. In addition, the height of critical medium column showed a decreasing trend as cohesion of rock mass, the internal friction angle and the unit weight of rock mass. Also, the method of predicting the scope of surface subsidence in the Dabeishan Iron Mine was applied. The results showed that the relative errors are less than 9% and the prediction method could be used in practical application.

The present study investigates the influence of ferrous iron (as FeSO4) and ferric iron (as Fe2 (SO4)3), and pyrite (FeS2) on the ability of bacterial leaching of a high-grade sulfide Zn–Pb ore. In this regard, shake flask experiments were carried out at 5% (w/v) pulp density of the ore sample (having 40.7% Zn and 12.4% Pb initial metal content) using a consortium of mesophilic iron and sulfur-oxidizing acidophiles. A concentration of 0.04 mol/L of ferric iron in the leaching media was found to be optimum for zinc extraction without affecting growth of the microorganisms. Under this concentration, the dissolution of Zn, Pb, Cd, and As was found to be 57%, 0.2%, 0.03%, and 9.9% in 25 days. Using ferrous iron in the media, 0.16 mol/L of Fe2+ was found to be the optimum concentration for efficient bacterial growth and metal dissolution (54.6% Zn, 0.08% Pb, 0.03% Cd, and 10.2% As) from the sample in 25 days. On the other hand, using pyrite as the source of energy for bacterial growth, an initial 12-day lag period was observed when compared to the effect of ferrous iron in the media. Under the optimum concentration (test with 0.24 mol/L iron in the form of pyrite), the dissolution of Zn, Pb, Cd, and As was found to be 39.8%, 0.1%, 0.03%, and 10% in 25 days. The surface chemistry analysis indicated formation of a sulfur layer over the particle surface that hindered reagent diffusion and affected metal recovery through bioleaching.

Recently there has been much discussion of the use of pipelines for the long-distance transportation of solids. Many have come to recognize the economies inherent in pipeline transportation. The widespread movement of oil and gas at astonishingly low costs - a gallon of oil moves from Montana to New York for less than that for the delivery of a postcard - has spurred others to sturdy this mode of transportation. Most interested people are aware of the inherent advantages of pipelines - continuity and reliability of operations - low manpower requirements per ton mile - moderate capital costs per ton mile - low maintenance costs per ton mile - low operating costs per ton mile.

The prestressed concrete industry in particular, and the precast concrete industry to some extent, are rank newcomers to the concrete construction field compared to the cement, ready-mixed or concrete masonry industries. This young industry reflects its youth and vigor in its enthusiasm, optimism and the belief that it can reach any goal it chooses to set -- and it is setting its sights high. The prestressed and precast concrete industry fully expects to become the major structural and architectural material by the 1980's. Before exploring how the industry expects to reach this goal, a brief look at the origins and the growth of the industry may be useful in an evaluation of the feasibility of this goal. It was always recognized that concrete, strong and efficient for supporting loads which cause compression, was weak and inefficient when used to carry loads which induce tension. Thus the reason for reinforced concrete in which the concrete efficiently carries the compression in a flexural member while low grade steel bars reinforce the concrete in the areas 'of tensile stress. (Fig. 1). The steel being relatively inexpensive, can passively, but quite effectively carry tensile force while the concrete carries compression. The concrete in contact with the reinforcing also protects the steel from corrosion and acts as insulation to provide a superior "built-in" fire resistance. The major disadvantage of reinforced concrete relative to its main competitor, steel, is its weight in relation to its load-carrying capacity. Only South Africa can be considered in terms of resources of amphibole asbestos. There are two asbestos producing fields, one in the Northern Cape Province (producing only crocidolite), and one in the Eastern Transvaal (producing only amosite). This chapter discusses the banded ironstone sequence in which amphibole asbestos occurs, and the genesis of the fiber is briefly reviewed. Also, the properties and characteristics of amphibole asbestos are discussed and compared to those of chrysotile. Approximately 300 000 t of arnosite and crocidolite are produced annually. Crocidolite has a potential for a fivefold increase of production chat could be sustained beyond the year 2000. An estimate of the resources of the various producing fields in South Africa is made. The mining methods are also reviewed and evaluation techniques are discussed. The only two types of amphibole asbestos exploited at present in South Africa are amosite [the white colored amphibole asbestos) and crocidolite (the blue colored asbestos). As is well known, crocidolite has been mined in South Africa from the early part of this century, and amosite since the early 1930's. Since these dates, asbestos mining has developed into a significant mining industry. The annual production of crocidolite is approximately 170 000 to 200 000 t. and amosite production is in the region of 80 000 to 100 000 t. CLASSIFICATION OF AMPHIBOLE ASBESTOS Four types of amphibole asbestos are produced economically in the world today: (1) crocidolite, the fibrous equivalent of riebeckite, (2) arnosite, the fibrous equivalent of grunerite, (3) trernolite, and (4) anthophylite. The names trernolite and grunerite apply equally to the crystal and fibrous forms of these minerals. For comparison and clarification purposes, the six known varieties of asbestiform minerals known in the world are shown in Table 1. All the asbestos minerals were originally developed as cross fiber seams in veins or fractures, or were controlled by the lithology. Post- fiber effects caused slip, sheared, and folded fiber seams. Crocidolite and amosite occur in banded ironstone of early Proterozoic age of the Transvaal Supergroup. The fiber seams are developed in certain defined lithological units in the banded ironstone sequence. The lithological units have a remarkable lateral persistence with respect to their chemical nature and physical appearance. Vertically, the banded ironstone sequence displays a heterogeneous nature. Commercial Applications The features and properties that make amphibole asbestos commercially attractive are: 1) The long average length of the fibers is good for greater wet strength in composites. 2) The high tensile strength of crocidolite makes it superior to all other types of asbestos. 3) It is characterized by dispersion in most liquid media, particularly amosite in water. 4) Since the surface charge of amosite and crocidolite is negative, the fibers produce an open lattice work in water with a high bulk volume giving excellent filtration rates and rapid drainage in a wet asbestos cement mix. 5) The insulating properties of amphibole asbestos mats are still important, particularly in a corrosive environment, despite the introduction of many other synthetic insulating materials. 6) Corrosion resistance, particularly acid corrosion resistance. 7) Due to the high modulus of amphibole fibers, resins reinforced with these fibers exhibit

The free-milling ore characteristics of the Fort Knox gold deposit are ideal for studying gold and silver behaviors in various processing circuits without serious interference of sulfide minerals and other refractory factors. A galvanic effect leads to faster silver dissolution than gold dissolution and, as a result, the Au/Ag solution concentration ratio increases through the leach circuit. In the CIP circuit, Au adsorption is more effective than Ag adsorption. The Au/Ag solution concentration ratio decreases from 10.0 to 1.0 as the slurry advances from CIP tank #1 to CIP tank #5, while Au/Ag ratio in the carbon increases from 3.2 to 15.3, as the carbon advances from CIP tank #5 to CIP tank #1. Silver is stripped more effectively than gold from the loaded carbon. The Au/Ag ratio in solution reaches 2.0 in the first 75,700 L of strip solution that pass through the loaded carbon; as the stripping process continues, the Au/Ag ratio in the strip solution increases. In the electrowinning circuit, the Au/Ag ratio in the spent electrowinning solution is significantly lower than that in the electrowinning feed, indicating that Au is more rapidly deposited onto the cathode than Ag.

The Kennecott Ridgeway Mine in South Carolina is scheduled to complete mining and ore processing in the last quarter of 1999. Tailings are disposed in a 300 acre, lined tailings impoundment. To facilitate closure and reclamation, modification of the tailings impoundment operation has been adopted. Mining involved the sequenced development of two open pits. In 1996 mining of the South Pit was completed and backfilling of the pit with waste rock from the North Pit was initiated and will continue until mining ceases. Both pits will be reclaimed as fresh water lakes. This paper presents the physical, geochemical and hydrogeochemical evaluation of the operational and post operational management of the project. Comparison of the operational monitoring data against predicted performance are reviewed.

With the increasing need to mine lower grade ores, high energy-related costs in comminution are of major concern. Very fine grinding is needed to liberate the very fine mineral particles in these ores. Not only is this expensive but it leads to greater losses in 'slimes'. In the early 1970's, 50% of the tin mined in Bolivia, 30% of the phosphate mined in Florida and 20% of the world's tungsten were lost in this way (Somasundaran, 1979). Gravity concentration techniques become unacceptably inefficient for particle treatment below 25-50µm, and even flotation fails in the ultra-fine range. Two approaches can be adopted to try to overcome this problem. The first involves increasing the efficiency of existing equipment or developing new slimes treatment processes. Gravity devices such as the Bartles-Mozley concentrator have been developed for this purpose and good recovery has been reported from 100µm down to 5µm. Such machines, however, have relatively low throughputs, so that large areas of plant space are generally required. Flotation is rapidly growing in importance for the treatment of ultra-fine minerals traditionally treated by gravity concentration.

The WIPP (Waste Isolation Pilot Plant) Project near Carlsbad, New Mexico, is a research and development project sponsored by U.S. Department of Energy, designed to demonstrate the safe containment for disposal of radioactive waste. A mine (repository) is currently being developed 2150 feet below the surface, in a thick salt bed which will serve as the disposal medium. Provision of a proper ventilation system at the WIPP Project is a major priority of those responsible for its design, management, and operations. As an ongoing effort towards this goal, it was decided to simulate the mine's ventilation system using Dravo's MINEVENT computer program. Specifically, the work included the development of the following simulation models: 1. Simulation of the current ventilation system 2. Simulation of the designed ventilation system for the following modes: o Mine Construction mode/shift o Waste storage mode/shift o Fire or exhaust filtration mode These computer models are useful in solving complex ventilation problems likely to be encountered in an R&D project, like WIPP. They are particularly helpful for the development of contingency plans to incorporate during emergency situations, such as fires, fan stop- pages, radiation leaks, etc. Also, they can be utilized when considering expanding certain underground areas to ensure the availability of adequate ventilation.
