A gaseous chlorination process for hydrometallurgical treatment of a chalcopyrite concentrate was investigated. The overall process is visualized to consist of low temperature chlorination-selective oxidation, followed by aqueous chloride leaching and SX-EW for producing electrolytic copper elemental sulfur and ferric oxide. In this article, the chlorination phase of the processes is described. Initially, the chlorination behavior of chalcopyrite-concentrate micro-pellets was investigated using a small batch-type fluidized bed reactor. The optimum conditions thereby established was used in continuous chlorination tests. The chlorinated products thus prepared were used in the selective oxidation phase of the investigation.

The waves of prospectors who struggled across the wide Alaskan wilderness between 1898 and 19 10 came close to but did not actually find the rich copper/zinc/silver deposits strung out along 161 km ( 100 miles) of felsic schist in the remote Brooks Range of northwestern Alaska. They had heard rumors of gold in the valley of the Kobuk River, so they skirted the Arctic ice pack in the Chukchi Sea and, in a force at least 800 men strong, ascended the Kobuk River in 1898. Twenty-eight placer mining camps were established but only a handful survived for more than a few years. One of the placers that died rapidly was Ruby Creek. A map showing the location of Alaskan mineral deposits is given in Fig. 1. The Ruby Creek miners, disappointed with the scarcity of gold in that creek, followed copper-bearing float to two places where the float was especially plentiful. Pits, a short adit, and a shallow shaft uncovered copper carbonates, bornite, and chalcopyrite in fractured limestone but the remoteness of the district blocked efforts to sell the claims or to raise capital for development. Shortly after 1906, the copper prospects were abandoned and, except for an account published in 1913 by the US Geological Survey, they were forgotten, as were the names of the prospectors.

The Monsanto Company's Henry Mine is located 17 miles northeast of Soda Springs, in the southeast corner of Idaho. Ore being mined is phosphate rock which lies in the Permian Phosphoria formation. The ore is the raw material for Monsanto's three furnace elemental "P" plant near Soda Springs. The finished product from the furnaces is elemental phosphorus which is subsequently used in the manufacture of detergents, food preservatives, fire retardants and other consumer items. Mining is by open pit methods using 0-9 crawler tractors to rip and push-load rubber tired scrapers in stripping and mining operations. The equipment spread consists of six D-9G crawler tractors, four Caterpillar 6578 scrapers, eight Euclid S-24 scrapers, one Reich T750 drill and one Caterpillar No. 16 patrol plus various support equipment. Stripping is performed on a 12-month basis, two shifts per day. Mining is performed mainly in the summer months on a one shift basis. The hauling season begins May 15 and ends November 1 due to freezing weather and snow conditions. Annual production is 1,000,000 tons of phosphate rock and 2,500,000 to 3,000,000 yards of stripping. Stripping, mining and hauling is performed for Monsanto by Dravo-Soda Springs, a mining contractor. Dravo-Soda Springs owns, operates and maintains all equipment used in stripping, mining and hauling. The contractor is paid for stripping by the bank yard and for ore mined and hauled on a tonnage basis. The Monsanto elemental phosphorus plant began production in 1952 with ore being trucked to the plant from the Ballard Mine. Haulage was over public roads in 15, 24-ton semitrucks. A private haul road was constructed from the Ballard Mine to the Monsanto Plant in 1958 and 1959 to accommodate trucks with two twenty-yard trailers. This 11/ mile road was first used in the 1959 hauling season. In 1965, five new Kenworth tractors with two, 'forty yard trailers were introduced into the haulage system. The Bureau of Mines is investigating the use of geophysical methods to determine rock mass characteristics, particularly rock quality, lithology, and fracture parameters that are important for determining the feasibility of in situ leaching operations. As part of this research, two Bureau-developed crosshole geophysical systems are described that can be used for site investigation and rock mass characterization. Results are given for performance tests at field sites in Arizona and Texas and for correlations between the crosshole seismic data with fracture frequency, rock quality, and lithologic variation. Recommendations are made for using elastic waveform propagation characteristics and dynamic elastic properties for improving rock mass characterization in the geomechanical assessment of in situ leaching deposits.

It was not many years ago that people would have argued that a coal session did not belong at an International Mining Convention. Historically, steam coal has always been used domestically due to its natural geographic diversity and high transportation expense. Times have changed. With the help of Opec, steam coal has gone international. As opposed to metallurgical coal, whose trade routes have a long history, whose supply sources are more limited and whose market growth is seen by most to be relatively flat, steam coal export forecasts are calling for more than a doubling by 1990 and a quadrupling by the year 2000. Suddenly, one must be familiar with coal mining on a global basis in order to predict which regions will be able to fill these markets.

With the passage of recent national and state legislation aimed at tighter regulation of air pollution and smoke control, attention has been focused on a problem which has long confronted the coal industry--the disposal of coal waste with its inadvertent ignition. Even as recent as 1935, a decision from the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas confirms the stand taken on control of burning coal refuse disposal areas. "The uncontroverted testimony is that there is no feasible method of operating a coal mine without a gob pile on the surface, as no use has ever been found for this troublesome by-product of mining; that every large coal mine has a large gob pile close to its tipple; that sooner or later these piles all ignite through spontaneous combustion; that practically every large mine in Western Pennsylvania has a burning gob pile, and that there is no known means of averting such a fire." 19* As a result of the past "no regulation policy," there are presently on the order of 500 burning refuse banks, of which 213, 142, and 49 are found in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky, respective¬ly. 18 Many of these refuse banks have burned for 40 years or more; many others may continue burning for a like period. It is estimated that the annual emission from these smoldering piles approaches 183,000 tons of pollutents which may produce many deleterious effects on the populace, property and vegetation in the proximity to the sources.16 To date, little progress has been made in alleviating the pollution from the currently burning refuse banks; however, numerous investigators who are researching the causes of ignition, as well as preventative disposal techniques (refuse compaction, layering and crushing to finer sizes) have met with some success in handling the newly discarded coal refuse.

INTRODUCTION For any identified mineral resource to qualify as a minable reserve, it must contain legally and economically extractable mineral at the time of determination. As competition for land has increased, the legal complexities have more than kept pace, frequently becoming the most important determinant in mineral exploration and development projects. Rarely will developers of a project avoid having to obtain numerous federal, state, and/or local permits while acquiring the necessary legal permission to begin mining. Each site must be selected carefully, not only for economic feasibility, but also for legal feasibility. Although it is impossible to present site-specific solutions for all potential underground developments, certain generalizations may be applied to specific land categories, particularly federally owned land. Such federally owned land includes more than 33% of the land area of the United States and many of the areas potentially attractive for future development. State and local restrictions affect a large portion of the nonfederal land, and those restrictions are equally important even though their diversity and current status require more regional study than can be provided herein (the list of references include sources of additional information). Each potential mining site requires a title search of the land status to determine the land ownership and the conditions affecting development. In addition, appropriate data concerning the mineralogic and economic potentials of an area must be collected. As listed in Table 1, many sources of public information are avail- able to aid potential developers. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical federal master title plat. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE The settlement of the United States reflects a fascinating history of public-land laws and subsequent mineral-disposal laws. Most of the statutes of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries sought to dispose of land for the purpose of generating revenue to the federal government. The underlying need for general revenue contributed directly to numerous and often conflicting land policies. More recently, diverse federal programs such as environmental legislation have transcended the need for revenue in forming the framework that determines who has power over mineral developments and where those developments can take place. In 1812, the General Land Office was established under the Treasury Dept. At that time, English common law prevailed, entitling the owner of the surface to whatever was contained within the surface boundaries from the surface to the center of the earth. Unless a distinct title separated the mineral estate, it was included in the surface-land ownership. However, gold and silver were the property of the crown and were controlled by sovereign prerogative. Early state legislation on the subject of mines and minerals may be classified as legislation providing for the sale of state lands with a reservation of the minerals and legislation recognizing or asserting the sovereign prerogative for precious metals. In 1781, a Pennsylvania statute reserved 20% of all gold and silver ore for the use of the commonwealth. Thomas Jefferson suggested that a portion of all gold and silver be retained by the federal government. These early rules affecting land in the eastern states, now privately held, have been re- pealed, declared obsolete, or largely ignored. Federal legislation prior to 1848 and affecting mining may be classified as legislation reserving the minerals to the United States and legislation authorizing the disposition of reserved minerals by sale, lease, or grant. With many modifications, these basic policies remain in effect at the present time. A 1796 act provided for the sale of the Northwest Territory and for the establishment of the present system of rectangular survey for public lands. The Lake Superior copper region was the scene of "wild and baseless excitement in 1837" when the attorney general concluded that the president had the power to lease lands in Wisconsin; this opinion soon was overturned by another attorney general. By 1846, Congress had passed legislation authorizing the president to sell reserved lead mines "as soon as practicable" since the system of granting Leases had proved to be unprofitable to both the government and the lessees, many of whom refused to pay the rent. The general practice of early federal Legislation was to make a distinction between mineral lands and other lands, deal with them separately, and generally withhold mineral lands from disposal except through special legislation dealing with particular land. In 1848, following the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, a vast land area was ceded to the United States by Mexico. This area included the present states of California, Nevada, and Utah, as well as portions of Arizona. Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming. This abolished the Mexican laws and customs relating to mining and preceded the adoption of the miners' own rules and customs. The adoption of those rules and customs followed a hard-fought battle between western congressmen and the eastern establishment. The western congressmen advocated adopting local customs through a location patent system, while the eastern establishment, particularly in Ohio and Indiana, favored an all- leasing system to pay off Civil War debts. The first mining law was passed in 1869 as an amendment to an act granting right-of-way to ditch land owners, and it was followed by the 1872 Mining Law. Precedent was established for the first categories of protected lands in the opening words of this act, which included the phrase "all unreserved" lands. Reserved lands subsequently defined included military and Indian reservations and were excluded from location since they were determined to be reserved lands. The newest addition to the Anamax Mining Company's Twin Buttes copper producing complex is a by-product uranium extraction plant which was placed into service in February 1980. The plant is unusual in that it is placed internal to the copper countercurrent decantation, solvent extraction, and electrowinning plant. The plant reached full production within a month and, to date, has produced continually above design rates.

Lift height, overall heap height and climate all play an important role in determining precious metals leaching rates, recoveries, operating costs and capital cost requirements for heap leaching operations. The effects of these factors are not easy to predict from testwork, and this can result in unexpected delays in metal production, lower recoveries than expected and higher capital and operating costs than necessary. This paper investigates the economic impact of lift height, overall heap height and climate on heap leaching and provides criteria to assist in the design and operation of leaching facilities. Descriptions of three heap leach operations in the western USA are provided to support the discussions and conclusions.

A kinetic model for leaching of various metals with different lixiviants in a batch system has been developed. Material balances for reactants and products at the solid/liquid interface were formulated and solutions to these balances were obtained in view of practical conditions. Special emphasis has been given to examine mixed controlled reaction systems where both heterogenous reaction and mass transfer play important role on the overall rate expression. The resulting kinetic expressions for either powder or rotating disc are discussed in light of experimental findings for various metals. Examples of the metal dissolution systems considered in this study include cobalt, nickel, copper and gold in acid, cyanide or ammoniacal solutions.

The requirement for a paradigm shift with regard to materials movement in search of low-cost production has not just happened by chance but, rather, has been driven by agents of change that include mining companies, consultants, governments and equipment suppliers. During the past 100 years of mining, surface mining technology has involved humans with hand tools, humans with machinery and unmanned automated equipment. In the past 50 years, surface mining technology has evolved and now takes the form of trucks and loaders (TL), in-pit-crushing conveying (IPCC) and autonomous haulage equipment (AHS).

Utah statute defines sovereign lands as "those lands lying below the ordinary high water mark of navigable bodies of water at the date of statehood, and owned by the state by virtue of its sovereignty." The lands within the bed of Great Salt Lake (GSL) are, by this definition, sovereign lands, acquired at statehood in 1896 in accordance with the "equal footing" doctrine, granting each state control and ownership of navigable waters and the lands underneath those waters within its borders. Under public trust doctrine, the state, as trustee for the people, bears responsibility for preserving and protecting the right of the public to use of the waters for navigation, commerce, fishing, recreation, and wildlife habitat. Also by statute, sovereign lands are defined as "state lands," to be managed by "multiple use sustained-yield principles." The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands is given management authority for sovereign lands and, as manager, has responsibility to prepare comprehensive plans, initiate studies of the lake and its resources, implement comprehensive plans through state and local entities, and coordinate the activities of various divisions within the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands also has responsibility for management of mineral leasing on sovereign lands. The many resources on the lake--water, minerals, wildlife, recreation, archeological and historical values--are managed by as many state agencies which occasionally creates conflicts. The brines of GSL contain several ions that crystalize into valuable minerals during evaporation. The major ions in the lake are, in order of relative abundance, chloride, sodium, sulfate, magnesium, and potassium. Mineral products which are currently extracted from lake brines are sodium chloride, magnesium chloride brine which can be sold as flake magnesium chloride or further processed into magnesium and chlorine gas, and potassium sulfate. Mineral products which have potential for extraction include gypsum, sodium sulfate, and trace amounts of lithium, boron, and bromine. The GSL contained an estimated 4.3 billion short tons (st) (3.9 billion metric tons [mt]) of dissolved salts in 1998. Utah Geological Survey (UGS) estimates of the dissolved salt content in GSL have fluctuated from 4.0 to 5.5 billion st (3.6 to 5.0 billion mt) due to the dynamic conditions in the lake as salts are precipitated and redissolved, and due to the diversion of brines from GSL, such as the West Desert Pumping Project. The lake has four areas of varying salinity, separated by dikes or other man-made structures: north arm and Stansbury Bay brines at near saturation (25 to 27 percent total dissolved solids [TDS]); the main body of the south arm with concentrations ranging from 7 to 15 percent TDS as lake elevations fluctuate; the waters in Farmington Bay at approximately 3 to 5 percent TDS; and Bear River Bay at <1 to 7 percent TDS. The percent TDS in Bear River Bay fluctuates with lake level, and changes in Bear River inflow. The transfer of salts from the south arm to the north arm has raised questions about the viability of the mineral and brine shrimp industries. The UGS and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) continue to monitor salinities at designated sites on the lake to document changing lake salinity. A recurrent theme is that placement of dikes and diversions can have significant and rapid impacts on various conditions in the lake. Hydrocarbon resources on the lake are significant, but presently undeveloped. The hydrocarbons are low gravity (4 to 9 degree API) and tar-like, contain high nitrogen concentrations, and up to 12 percent sulfur. The unusual characteristics of the oil have been the subject of studies by chemists at Weber State University and University Louis Pasteur de Strasbourg. However, these resources are difficult, and at present, uneconomic to extract using current technology because of the nature of the hydrocarbons, and production in "an offshore, highly saline environment." Oolitic sand deposits make up many of the beaches and shorelines around the lake. Because of their high calcium carbonate content, oolites have been used by Magnesium Corporation of America (MagCorp) and its predecessors for acid neutralization and dike construction. Oolites are also used in very minor amounts in flower drying. The Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining reports up to 130,000 st (118,000 mt) mined annually by MagCorp from U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands adjacent to GSL. Currently, there are twelve producing mineral leases which generated slightly more than $1,000,000 in royalties during calendar year 1998. IMC Kalium Ogden Corp. (IMC Kalium) produces potassium sulfate and magnesium chloride from brines concentrated through solar evaporation in Bear River Bay and Clyman Bay. By-product sodium chloride is transferred to IMC Salt, which packages and sells the salt. MagCorp produces magnesium metal from brines concentrated in Stansbury Bay. Cargill Salt produces sodium chloride from brines provided by MagCorp under a lease agreement. Morton Salt produces salt at the southeast end of Stansbury Island. Lastly, North Shore Limited produces cocentrated brines for use in dietary and mineral/vitamin supplements near Spring Bay in the north arm of the lake. Producers of magnesium, potash, and salt from GSL contribute significantly to the value of metals and industrial minerals in Utah. Together these companies contribute approximately $240 million in gross value, or 18 percent of the value of the state&apos;s nonfuel mineral production. Most of this production is exported.

In the non-operational ?Górka? quarry, there are situated both a waste disposal site of an area of 6.7 ha, containing approximately 1 million ton wastes from high aluminium content materials (incl. about 400000 t of wastes from aluminum hydroxide production), and a pond of an area of roughly 3 ha, up to 15 m deep, with about 400000 m3 of polluted water and infiltrates from the disposal site mentioned. The basic problem related to the effluents in the Górka pond is both their high alkalinity (pH 12-13.4) and a variable analysis of pollutants whose level increases appreciably with the pond?s depth. The solution offered provides, first of all, remedial pumping and a treatment of effluents retained in the Górka reservoir. Effluents would be treated in a reverse osmosis plant according to a process verified so far on a quarter-commercial scale. The treatment process by-product, a brine solution (containing about 25% NaCl) whose amount may reach up to 100000 m3 might be supplied to the Debiensko Mine, which produces technological salt from salt-bearing mine waters. In parallel, an intake of underflows of infiltrates would be provided (previous geochemical identification) in order to take them away from the high aluminum site (by means of deep wells, and possibly girdling ditches). Such effluents would be subject to treatment. The successive stage is the utilization of approx. 50000 m3 of bottom slurry, left in the emptied reservoir, in the production of self-solidifying mixtures, which would be then used for sealing the bottom and the banks of the Górka reservoir. The empty and sealed reservoir would be filled up with a volume of approx. 600000 t of ashes, coming from coal burning in the thermal-electric power station. For the last stage, instead, is scheduled the rehabilitation of the entire waste disposal site in the Górka quarry. The site will be drained, covered with a leveling, sealing and rehabilitating layer, which will allow to introduce plants on the rehabilitated waste site. "In this paper, we consider an underground production scheduling problem consisting of determining the proper time interval or intervals in which to complete each mining activity so as to maximize a mine’s discounted value while adhering to precedence, activity durations, and production and processing limits. We present two different integer programming formulations for modeling this optimization problem. Both formulations possess a resource-constrained project scheduling problem structure. The first formulation uses a fine time discretization and is better suited for tactical mine scheduling applications. The second formulation, which uses a coarser time discretization, is better suited for strategic scheduling applications. We illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of each formulation with examples.IntroductionProject scheduling is an important aspect of underground mine planning that consists of determining the start dates for a given set of activities so as to maximize the value of a project while adhering to operational and re-source-availability constraints. Important activities that require scheduling include development, drilling, stoping and other ore-extraction techniques, and backfilling. Precedence relation-ships impose an order in which activities can be carried out based on their location in the mine: for example, the activity a associated with development of an area must be completed before the activity a´ associated with extraction of that same area can begin. Re-sources include attributes of the mining operation, such as the amount of extraction and mill capacity available per time period, and are determined by capital and equipment availability and other factors. In this paper, for our set-ting, resource-availability constraints consider the amounts of material that can be extracted and sent to the mill — that is, processed — per time period."

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed a light-emitting diode (LED) area luminaire called the Saturn and conducted a laboratory study using a Fletcher High Dual-boom Mast Feed (HDDR) roof bolting machine. The Saturn luminaire was designed to (1) enhance floor illumination to enable better detection of trip hazards in the interior spaces of a roof bolter and (2) reduce glare that has typically been an issue of concern on roof bolters. This paper reports on the results of achieving the second objective. The existing roof bolter lighting was the baseline and was compared with three versions of the Saturn luminaire relative to light intensity (100%, 75%, and 50%). Discomfort and disability glare data were obtained from 30 participants that comprised three age groups. Discomfort glare perceptions were obtained using the De Boer rating scale, and disability glare was quantified by using Mars Letter Contrast Sensitivity tests. Discomfort glare was reduced at least 3 levels with all Saturn versions. Also, a predictive model was used to estimate discomfort glare, and the results were similar. Disability glare was the least for the Saturn’s 50% intensity, and all Saturn versions had significantly less disability glare than with the baseline lighting. Veiling luminance was calculated and used as another indicator of disability glare. Veiling luminance was 28 to 42 times greater with the baseline lighting as compared with that of the Saturn lighting. Lastly, visibility levels were calculated. The Saturn versions were 4 to 6.5 times better in terms of visibility level.

A $20M pressure oxidation facility is under construction at the Nerco Con Mine, Yellowknife. Plant commissioning will start in the third quarter of 1992. Roasting of arsenical auriferous concentrates prior to 1970 left 45,000 tons each of highly toxic gold-bearing arsenic trioxide sludge and roaster calcine at the minesite. Safe disposal of these wastes has been a high priority. In 1983 an arsenic trioxide plant was built by the former owner to re-treat the sludge and to sell the product. Due to a poor market and high operating losses, the plant was closed by Nerco in 1989. Mine production in the future will revert increasingly to refractory ore as a replacement for free-milling ore which has been the mill feed since the roaster was shut down. With this fact in mind, Nerco management saw the potential of a proven process to recover the gold from a combined feedstock of refractory flotation concentrate, sludge, and calcine waste. A further requirement was the stabilization of all the arsenic as an insoluble ferric arsenate. By the end of 1989, after the completion of a literature search and a study of process economics, pressure oxidation was selected. Extensive bench and pilot plant work was completed in 1990 and early 1991 to develop the process parameters and to complete environmental testing of the autoclave products. Management approval for construction of a pressure oxidation facility was made in December 1990. Plant capacity is 96 tpd requiring a 40 tpd VSA oxygen plant on site. Detailed engineering began in March 1991. The pressure oxidation building was completed by the end of 1991. The autoclave arrived on site and was mounted on its foundation in December 1991.

Introduction With the continued downward pressure on coal selling prices, mine management must make its operations as efficient as possible. The problem is the same one throughout the mineral industries, streamlining operations to maintain competitive min¬ing costs (Born, 1991). There has been a great deal of research into better using production manpower. But the story is different for operations support personnel. Traditionally, planning man¬power requirements are done annually, with modifications to the operating plan occurring generally quarterly. On the other hand, the demands on manpower are often dynamic, being responsive to changing productivity levels, mine conditions (including water influx, bad roof, poor floor) and unanticipated project requirements (responses to machine breakdowns or a new section setup requirement because of a drop in coal quality in another area). Such changes may impact the manpower structure significantly. At times they may cause serious labor relations problems concurrently. Realignments and the generation of instability in the workforce because of active job switching (bidding) are a result. Most responses by coal operators are reactive rather than proactive, a situation that could be mollified by more accu¬rate and detailed planning of predictable manpower require¬ments. A manpower planning tool is needed that takes into consideration such things as changing productivity levels and conditions as manhour requirements for different work areas are planned, rather than blindly allocated through traditional staffing modes. Mine Management Support System The Mine Management Support System (MMSS) is an integrated decision support system that was developed using Sun Microsystems hardware according to the contract be¬tween the US Bureau of Mines and West Virginia University. The software used in the development of MMSS included X¬ windows (Scheitler and Gettys, 1986) for the user interfaces, LASER (Raman, 1985; Hayhurst, 1990) for the expert sys¬tem and graphics components, and the C language for general programming requirements. Sun DOS was used to allow the use of IBM-compatible applications software on the Sun networks. Sun OS is the operating system. It can be viewed as an enhanced version of UNIX. One of the components of MMSS that was developed to address the many specific objectives outlined in Grayson et al. (1990) is the work scheduling system. MMSS accom¬plishes work scheduling by using a mathematical (goal) programming approach to minimize the amount of switching of workers from their regular jobs to perform other jobs (Grayson and Nutter, 1991). Manpower support program The main objective of MANSUPP is to plan a detailed manpower structure for a mine by incorporating a production schedule, condition-modified work standards and manage¬ment preferences to predict required manhours for various support activities, for example, belt moves. This is accom¬plished by gathering and processing planning information the same way a mine planner would. The program is menu¬driven with the selection of a particular menu item locating the user in the appropriate area within the spreadsheet to review/add information. All of the interactions between productivity, section conditions and management prefer¬ences and their effect on the amount of support work required must be considered. Information regarding the productivity of a particular section, the geometry of the section, work standards for individual activities and section conditions must all be gath¬ered for input into the program. In the initial stages of development, it was decided that the program be developed in an environment that mine planners were familiar with in order to accommodate the use of the program. Lotus 1-2-3 or a compatible (Quattro Pro) met this environmental need. Other reasons included ease of calculation due to built-in functions, powerful command language and macro capabili¬ties. Each of the major components of the program defined are summarized. Production schedule This area allows the user to input a production schedule for the entire mine over 12 periods. Space has been provided for five sections, advance or retreat, and two longwall sections. There are several calculations occurring in this area that do not apply to the determination of manpower, but serve as an aid in production planning. Section description The section description area of the spreadsheet is shown in Table 1. The first three items are calculated in the production schedule area of the worksheet and then transferred to this location. The remaining information is input by the user to be used in later calculations.

"INTRODUCTION High sulfate (SO4-2) levels often occur in MIW (mining influenced water) either as the result of oxidation of sulfide minerals exposed by mining activity or by deliberate addition – commonly by sulfuric acid (H2SO4) use in hydrometallurgical leaching activities. Increasing regulation of sulfate discharge is creating new pressure to treat or mitigate sulfate release to prevent its entry into the environment. Current treatments include precipitating as gypsum during lime treatment, filtration separation using membranes such as reverse osmosis and nanofiltration technology, and biological elimination via methods like constructed bioreactors. Blue Planet Strategies (BPS) focuses on improved resource utilization targeting electrolytic treatment and waste conversion into resources and has now demonstrated that its proprietary DEMET™ (Dynamic Electrolytic Metal Effluent Treatment) platform can also remove sulfate from target streams as a byproduct of its usual primary treatment focus points of metal species elimination and/or pH adjustment.[1-6] This powerful new capability can mitigate sulfate contamination and recover the sulfate in a useful and potentially saleable form as a byproduct of improved primary treatments focused on enhancing production or treating waste. "Point cloud technology is now an indispensable tool in geological and geotechnical data collection, interpretation and analysis. Open-pit and underground mines of all sizes are regularly collecting point cloud data as laser scanning (LiDAR) and photogrammetry surveying devices have become affordable and the workflows fast and efficient. Past challenges of large data processing and manipulation are gone with recent technological advancements in computer hardware and software. These innovations reduce file sizes, ease rendering requirements and allow for the implementation of real-time 3D viewers and surface meshing tools. With its ability to remotely and safely, rapidly and accurately extract large quantities of georeferenced and 3D-oriented data, point cloud technology provides numerous applications to the geomechanical field. The list of uses is continuously growing. This article specifically focuses on digital outcrop modeling and digital terrain engineering. Point clouds. The high-resolution and increasing availability of point cloud technology is rapidly improving open-pit and underground mines’ investigation, interpretation and characterization of site geology and rock mass properties (Kemeny et al., 2015; Lyons-Baral, 2012). LiDAR and photogrammetry are common remote sensing methods employed to measure the coordinates of surfaces in three dimensions (3D), providing the X, Y and Z locations and typically the reflective intensity and/or the visible three-band color of each point (Fig. 1).LiDAR uses either a time-of-flight or phase-shift measurement of a laser beam reflected off targeted surfaces and received back into the device.Photogrammetry generates point clouds by merging multiple overlapping photographs and uses stereographic plotting to define the locations of object points in 3D space. These methods can be deployed from airplanes, unpiloted aerial systems (UAS or drones), tripods, land vehicles and even in a mobile backpack shown in Fig. 2. RADAR, Total Station-Prism and other remote sensing systems also offer very precise “point clouds,” but this article does not address these due to their higher cost and lower versatility and mobility."
