Throughout the history of power excavating machines, engineers have continuously tried to shape the main drive speed-torque characteristics to provide an optimum performance from each main motion. Selection of prime mover for the various motions has been the subject of many engineering studies and most forms of energy conversion have been tried. A new form of electrical power conversion looms on the horizon' as the most optimum yet. Controlled frequency operation of a squirrel cage induction motor increases the reliability of the most reliable form of energy conversion (electrical) found thus far and at the same time improves the performance characteristics.

Many coal beds that will be mined in southeastern Montana are aquifers that provide essential local water supplies. Mine cuts along aquifer outcrops create almost imperceptible piezometric changes. Monitoring near such operations at Colstrip has detected almost no water-level declines in observation wells. Mine cuts between outcrops induce rapid storage depletion and associated piezometric depressions. One such cut near Decker induced 1,250 m3/day of flow from storage and created a piezometric depression of 3 meters or more as far as 1,500 meters from the mine. No wells have yet become non-productive but losses of some are inevitable as operations expand. Alternative supplies are available from aquifers stratigraphically below the disturbed materials. Effluents from active mines are chemically similar to other area waters because they are mixtures or ground waters entering the mine cuts. Occasional high concentrations of nitrate do occur, however, as residuals from explosives. Spoils generally consist of confined aquifers of wasted coal and coarse rubble at their bases, overlain by finer-grained sand, silt, and clay. Hydraulic conductivities and storage coefficients are comparable with those of undisturbed confined aquifers. Water quality in mined lands is highly diverse because of diverse spoils lithologies and poorly-established ground-water circulation. Ground water in spoils is more mineralized than in the coal beds and chemically resembles waters from sandstone aquifers. Hydrologic effects of mining will not be catastrophic or widespread but may have local significance. Most notable changes will be in water quality; availability will not be permanently reduced.

Peabody Coal Company is the nation's largest producer of coal and is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1978 Peabody divisionalized its operations to establish more responsive and effective mine management. Peabody Coal Company's Arizona Division operates two large surface mines, the Black Mesa and Kayenta Mines. Both are located in northeastern Arizona, approximately 30 miles from Kayenta, Arizona, on the Navajo and Hopi Indian Reservations. The Black Mesa Mine produces 4 to 5 million tons of coal per year and the Kayenta Mine produces 7 to 8 million tons per year. Coal from the Black Mesa Mine is transported 274 miles by coal slurry pipeline to the Mohave Generating Plant located on the Nevada/Arizona border at Bullhead City, Arizona. This plant is jointly owned by Southern California Edison, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Nevada Power Company and Salt River Project Agriculture Improvement and Power District.

The Port Radium mine of Eldorado Mining and Refining Limited, located on Great Bear Lake only a few miles from the Arctic Circle in north-western Canada, is the oldest uranium producer in Canada, The first concentrates were produced in 1933 and except for a period between 1940 and 1942 the mill has operated continuously. Although it is located in a remote area, and compared to more recent mines in other areas is a small tonnage operation, nonetheless the relatively high grade of the Port Radium ore has permitted operation to date on an economical basis. The mill process at Port Radium includes the original gravity concentration mill, and since 1952 an acid leaching plant which treats tailings from the gravity mill and tailings recovered by dredging of residues from underwater dumps in Great Bear Lake. The pregnant solution from the leach plant has to date been processed through aluminum reduction to yield an intermediate grade uranous phosphate-arsenate precipitate, Because of the rising costs of the aluminum reduction process, and its sensitivity to ore composition, Eldorado became interested in possible application to Port Radium of the solvent extraction processes of which we were obtaining increasing information in the latter part of 1954 and during 1955.

White Pine Copper Company began operating a plant designed to recover copper matte particles from its discarded reverberatory furnace slags in April, 1972. Seasonal operation, generally the months of April through November, continued through October, 1974, shutting down due to feed exhaustion. White Pine reverberatory furnace slags contained economically recoverable amounts of copper for a variety of reasons. Among them: 1. White Pine concentrates yield extremely high matte grades (65+% Cu) and viscous slags. The viscous slags hinder matte settling causing matte "prill" entrapment in the slag 2. White Pine's total refined copper output is accomplished through fire refining requiring special techniques for impurity removal, especially small amounts of nickel introduced from purchased pyrite and chalcopyrite fluxes. These special techniques result in high-copper slags, refractory to smelting, being reintroduced into the reverberatory furnace. 3. Furnace bottom build-ups resulting in mechanical matte entrapment through the formation of "dams" hindering matte flow. 4. Occasional concentrate fluxing and furnace atmosphere control problems.

Before going into this subject, I would very much like to call to your attention some past history on patents granted by the United States Patent office that involved ammonium nitrate. On February 10, 1885, a patent was granted to Russell S. Penniman. "The object of this invention is to securely protect ammonium nitrate against deliquescent and to maintain it in substantially its normal disintegrated condition, so as to afford a new product suited for ready use in the manufacture of high explosives, and enable the immediate admixture thereof with any of the well known explosive substances or compounds heretofore employed. 'Whether the nitrate be thus granulated or otherwise reduced to a granular or divided condition, it is then thoroughly mixed with about twelve (12) percent of the fluid or semi-fluid carbonaceous protecting medium, which forms a readily applied jacket or coating for the granules of nitrate and also serves as a carbonaceous element in such explosive compounds as it may thereafter be employed in."

The Sixteen-to-One Mine was originally designed and operated using Blasthole Stoping with end slicing as the primary mining method. This method changed to Modified VCR Stoping in response to efforts to control dilution. The new method combines Blasthole Stoping with shrinkage methods, pillars, and reduced sublevel intervals to provide the most practical dilution control avail- able for low cost bulk mining.

Pima Mining Company has recently completed their expansion tripling the plant capacity to 18,000 tons per day and now is in the process off expanding to 30,000 tons per day with completion scheduled for the summer of 1967. This paper briefly discusses the additions to the mining department and support areas with a more detailed report on the complete new crushing plant and additions to the concentrator. The crushing plant includes a 54-inch gyratory crusher, three 7-foot standard and seven 7-foot short head crushers along with necessary screens, feeders, and conveyor belts to produce a minus 1/2-inch rod mill feed. The concentrator consists of ten milling sections, each containing one 10-foot by 16-foot rod and two 10.5-foot by 13-foot ball mills, classification is done with cyclones. Pulp from each section is floated in 50 cells of 66-inch Fagergren flotation machines to produce a rougher concentrate which is cleaned in six stages of Denver cleaners to produce a final concentrate The various mill products are thickened with disposal made in conventional manner. Niagara Mohawk, like other northern coal users, has long experienced increased costs during winter months as a consequence of handling frozen coal. These costs include operating labor, maintenance labor and materials, equipment rental, fuel for thawing, demurrage, carrying costs for excess coal inventory and substitution of higher cost electrical generation for lost production capacity. In the winter of 1978-79, limited trials of several coal freeze conditioning agents were made to determine whether these would provide a cost-effective means of reducing the problems of handling frozen coal. Since these trials were generally effective, the Coal Purchasing Department arranged that all rail coal received during the 1979-80 winter from early December to mid March would be treated at the mines during loading. Inasmuch as the treatment costs are themselves appreciable and our various coal suppliers made a variety of choices of chemical supplier and equipment for application, an attempt was made to evaluate the unloading performance of each train received at the two generating stations which use coal as an aid in the future optimization of the use of freeze conditioning agents. These stations also receive coal by truck but this coal is not treated because of the short hauling time. The C.R. Huntley Station in Tonawanda, NY has a capacity of 800MW and burns about 5000 tons of coal per day during the winter months. The coal is primarily from central and western Pennsylvania but one source in southern Kentucky is also used regularly. Most of the Pennsylvania coal is washed and the fines are thermally dried. The coal is delivered in unit trains made up of mixed cars of 60, 75, and 90 ton capacity. Time between loading and arrival at the station averaged five days and ranged from three to eleven during the 1979-80 winter season.

"This work focuses on the extraction of rare earth metals (REE) from aqueous solutions using stimuli-responsive polymers. Various parameters affecting the adsorption capacity of the polymer, including pH, polymer concentration and REE concentration were studied. The interfacial behavior of REE in aqueous phase before and after polymer addition and the mechanism of the formation of metal-polymer complexes and their properties were investigated using UV/VIS spectroscopy. Results obtained would help to test the feasibility of employing stimuli responsive polymers in pre-concentration of rare earth elements associated with other elements in mineral aqueous streams prior to solvent extraction. The pre-concentration step would reduce the amount of organic solvents used for extraction and striping compared to conventional extraction processes. INTRODUCTION Rare earth elements (REEs) have become the foundation for several technologies and have been used extensively in many industries such as modern electronics, green energy, health care and transportation and defense [1-4]. As these industry sectors are growing, the global consumption of REEs is going to increase dramatically. The current global REEs demand is estimated to be 105,000 tons of rare earth oxides per annum with an expected annual growth of 5.6% [5-6]. Rare earth elements are produced from different sources (primary and secondary). China is considered as the largest producer of REE in the world, providing about 90% of the world’s mine production while the United States is second with 4% of the mine production [7]. High global demand for rare earth materials results in shortage of such materials in the near future. It should be considered that the term ‘‘rare’’ earth is not an accurate term, since they are abundant in some extent in the Earth’s crust, but are typically finely dispersed. Thus, nowadays looking for more efficient and cheaper methods for extraction, separation and purification of low concentrated REE ores and exploring secondary sources are essential. Rare earth materials are found in raw condition and require treatment that involves several processes, which can consume money and time. Recent improvements in extraction and recycling technology have made the extraction of rare earth elements from rare earth sources more feasible in terms of cost and time [8-10]. Physical and pyrometallurgical methods require high-energy and thus high costs. Moreover, due to environmental problems, environmental protection systems are required, and they are not as adaptable as chemical processes [11, 12]."

FALKIE, DIRECTOR, BUREAU OF MINES, U.S. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR, BEFORE THE FALL MEETING OF THE SOCIETY OF MINING ENGINEERS, AIME, ACAPULCO, MEXICO, SEPTEMBER 23, 1974 This is a time of uncertainty on the world mineral scene. For some of the world's so-called "developed" countries, reserves and production of key minerals are running low. And, we have learned that the energy so essential in recovering and processing minerals can suddenly be in short supply. The prospects for a "no growth" situation in energy or mineral consumption are practically nil. Moreover, the world's economy is in flux, casting doubt on whether traditional mineral customers will continue to be able to buy, or for that matter, whether traditional suppliers of minerals will continue to sell. It is clear that the mineral situation is contributing to world inflationary pressures, which incidentally are most damaging to developing countries. So it is appropriate that SME members devote this session to the world mineral situation, and consider some of the opportunities and responsibilities that we will inevitably encounter as the future becomes the present. The opportunities, to me at least, are especially intriguing, I have the good fortune to be part of an organization that has an enormous capability and responsibility for dealing with mineral problems. The Interior Department's Bureaus, including the Bureau of Mines, have been around for a long time. They are. a prolific and reliable source of both mineral information and mineral technology.

Mine gob has long been a safety concern in the coal industry due to the air flowing through the gob area. Therefore, knowledge of the airflow distribution and locations of hazard zones in longwall gob is important to prevent and control these hazards. Due to the inaccessibility of mine gob, many numerical studies have been performed to simulate gob air leakage using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) programs, but most of the studies isolated the gob from the mine ventilation network (MVN) with only predefined pressure boundary conditions. The MVN is, in fact, not static in a dynamic longwall mining process, and it consequently changes the boundary conditions and the gob flow field (GFF). Therefore, the MVN should be incorporated in the CFD model to prescribe the transient boundaries. However, it is very challenging to couple the 1D MVN and the 2D/3D GFF to make the mine ventilation simulation realistic. This research uses a proposed novel finite tube method (FTM) to couple the MVN and GFF. In the FTM, the GFF is discretized into a finite number of flow tubes, each of which is formed by two adjacent streamlines. These tubes connect the MVN into a new coupling network. Based on the FTM, a model for gas migration in gob is established for delineating the hazard zones of explosive methane concentration and spontaneous combustion.

Dry magnetic separation of feebly magnetic minerals and wet magnetic separators suitable for highly magnetic minerals have been commercially utilized for a number of years. The beneficiation of magnetic taconite ores by conventional, low intensity magnetic separators in combination with flotation is well established technology (1). However, over the past decade much effort has been expended in developing techniques for the upgrading of feebly magnetic oxidized iron ores (2,5). Such research and development have been stimulated by the limitations of the above-mentioned techniques in application to ores containing fine material; for example, ores requiring fine grinding for liberation or slime-forming ores such as the oxidized taconites or semi-taconites. Wet separation has allowed the reduction of the minim particle size that can be effectively treated from that allowable for high intensity dry magnetic separation. Consequently, the development of high intensity wet magnetic separation methods has received much attention in the search for an effective method to treat the weakly magnetic minerals. Recently Lawver and Hopstock (5) have provided an excellent review of the state of know- ledge of this technology. In addition, a valuable compendium of available laboratory and commercial devices is included. Nonetheless, the feasibility of the use of high intensity magnetic separation in a particular application is largly empirical in nature and requires experimentation to chazacterize the response of a particular ore. The purpose of this paper is to assess the incorporation of high intensity magnetic separation for the beneficiation of a non- sliming specular Michigan hematite. Particular attention is focused on the existence of a lower limit of particle size that can be treated effectively and is inherent in the use of these techniques. Additionally, a rationalization of various models presented in the literature is attempted.

The word adapt means "to change so that one's behavior will conform to new or changed circumstances." Applying this definition to process controllers suggests that an adaptive controller can change its behavior in response to changes in the dynamics and disturbances of the process. In the minerals industry there are many control cases where adaptive control will provide superior control as compared with more traditional PID (proportional, integral, derivative) control. A typical plant uses as many as 100 to 200 control loops for lprocess regulation. Therefore, the task of initially tuning and then periodically retuning these controllers is a formidable problem, During the time the controllers are "un-tuned", product quality may deteriorate and unstable operations may result. Adaptive controllers are capable of tuning themselves, thus avoiding this problem. The computers commonly used in distributed control systems are easily capable of implementing adaptive controllers. In addition to the possibility of using the control computer to implement adaptive controllers, many distributed control systems will offer adaptive control as a standard feature in the near future.

The high-rate floc blanket clarification process developed by the Anglo American Corporation of South Africa is capable of continuously clarifying gold and uranium pregnant solutions containing 200-2500 mg/L suspended solids to below 25 mg/L solids at an average rising velocity of 8 m/h at the low process cost of R0,001-0,002 per ton of liquid treated. Overall process cost savings are mainly due to increased polishing filtration cycle times.

Introduction One important class of manganiferrous ores is manganiferrous-silver ores. They occur in the oxidized portions of the silver deposits of the western United States. Silver is often associated with manganese oxides, which in some ore deposits are dispersed through calcite, causing the black color of the host rock, known as black calcite. Black calcites can occur in carbonate rocks (0.3 to 50 kg Ag/t) and in volcanic rocks (less than 30 g Ag/t). Silver mineralization associated with manganese oxides and black calcites can occur in veins (Hewett, 1968) or as disseminations (Graybeal, 1981). In the US, silver-bearing manganese veins are located in a broad arc that extends from southern Colorado to southwest New Mexico, southern Arizona, and southeast Califor¬nia (Hewett, 1964). Areas of disseminated silver-manganese mineralization include the Creede and Silver Cliff districts of Colorado and the Tombstone and Hardshell districts of Arizona (Graybeal, 1981). These deposits are also characterized by significant amounts of silver halides - cerargyrite (AgCl), bromargyrite (AgBr), and iodargyrite (AgI). Black calcites are also common in these deposits. Oxidized silver ores containing the higher oxides of manganese are generally refractory to hydrometallurgical methods of treatment. In the past when these ores could not be smelted, they were treated generally by cyanidation at very low efficiency. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) studied the problem of treating silver-manganese ores in the early 1920s (Clevenger and Caron, 1925). It was found that the refractory silver in the original ore was insoluble in all the common solvents for metallic silver and its salts. The conclusion was that to obtain the highest recovery of silver, all the manganese had to be dissolved or the higher oxides of manganese reduced to manganous oxide. More recent results from treating refractory silver¬manganese ores were given by USBM (Scheiner et al., 1973). The silver ores from Candeleria District, NV, and Round Mountain District, CO, were investigated. Electrooxidation experiments recovered only 34% silver with minor amounts of manganese dissolved. Sulfurous acid pretreatment followed by cyanidation revealed that silver extracted was proportional to the amount of SO2 used. A similar approach, using sulfurous acid pretreatment followed by cyanidation, was also proposed by Rhoades et al. (1984). Hazen Research Inc. performed extensive testing on silver and manganese dissolutions from Ag-Mn ores obtained from the Candeleria and Round Mountain ore deposits. The methods examined were direct cyanidation, pretreatment with sulfurous acid followed by cyanidation, malonitrile leach, and leaching with ammonium hydroxide-sodium thiosulfate under slight oxygen pressure. The results were not satisfactory. The importance of the vast reserves of Ag-Mn ores and the lack of an efficient method to recover these metals warranted a search for new technologies. One novel method for extraction of these metals is treatment of Ag-Mn ores with acidified thiourea solutions. Preliminary results of the leaching of silver and manganese from Ag-Mn ores were very encouraging (Pesic, 1984a) ; thus, it was decided to examine the new lixiviant in more detail. Experimental Ore from the Round Mountain District was studied. It was crushed, ground, and dry sieved into monosized fractions in the range of 16 to +400 mesh. The ore composition was about 90 g Ag/t and 3% Mn, depending slightly on size. The leaching experiments were performed in apparatus described elsewhere (Pesic, 1982 and 1984b). All experiments were performed at constant temperature conditions. The leaching residues were analyzed for silver and manganese. The development drilling program of the Copper Cities mine indicated that the molybdenum content of the ore would be about 0.011% MoS2' The molybdenum content of the Miami mine at the same time was about 0.025% MOS2' The Miami mill had a very successful molybdenum operation which used bleeder turbine steam from the Miami power plant for the steaming operation. The much lower grade of the Copper Cities ore, the absence of a source of low cost steam and the use of sodium aerofloat as the copper collector which Miami experience indicated did not respono readily to the steaming technique made very doubtful the success of a similar operation at Copper Cities. However, the relatively few pounds of copper that could be recovered from the low grade Copper Cities heads made very desirable the recovery of the molybdenwa,as a source of additional revenue. Accordingly, shortly after the Copper Cities mill began operation, a research program was instituted to develop a suitable method of molybdenum recovery. This program explored first, the successful steaming process then in use at Miami and as expected, found it unable to decompose the sodium aerofloat copper collector. The known chemical depressants were then tried without much encouragement. Finally the copper concentrate was dried, not roasted, to 2-3% mOisture and this along with sodium ferro-cyanide and cyanide resulted in sufficient copper depression that a final molybdenum concentrate containing 1.0% CU could be made. "A pressing issue that has often been the topic of discussion in iron-making operations in India is the high content of alumina in the country’s iron ore deposits. The presence of alumina has hampered production by affecting slag fluidity, and thereby the hot metal quality. Iron ores from Indian mines are generally rich in hematite, with traces or small amounts of goethite/limonite, kaolinite, gibbsite and quartz reported from time to time. In day-to-day production, emphasis is placed on checking the chemical analysis of product samples, but the true solution to the alumina problem lies in estimating the mineralogy of the ore samples. We developed a mathematical model, based on singular value decomposition, to predict mineralogy from classical chemical analysis. We then used X-ray diffraction patterns, scanning electron microscope analysis, and grain counting with an optical microscope to determine actual mineral compositions and to test the values predicted by the model. The results indicate that with regular calibration, the model can be used as a simple, fast and effective tool to predict on a regular basis the mineralogy of multiple samples.IntroductionIndian blast furnaces use high-grade iron ores (as lumps or as sinter) and coke (obtained from the destructive distillation of coal) as raw materials for the production of high-quality hot metal to be converted into different steel products through the Linz- Donawitz process. The iron ores are mainly sourced from the Singhbhum region of Odisha and Jharkhand states, the Bailadialla region of Chattisgarh state and the Bellary region of Karnataka and Goa states, and are mainly classified based on size as (1) lump ore (fed directly into blast furnaces), (2) fines (converted into sinter/pellets and fed to blast furnaces) and (3) slimes (< 0.15 mm; currently dumped in huge slime ponds). Any variation in the quality of the ores supplied results in variations in the production trends of hot metal."

P.T. Freeport Indonesia operates a mining complex located in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. This district consists of both underground and surface operations. The East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) is one of the major orebodies in this district. Subsurface caving of the EESS has been carried out in a systematic series of mining lifts dating back almost 30 years. Present production is from the third lift (Deep Ore Zone), which is scheduled to peak at 80,000 mtpd during 2009, with this rate sustained through 2015. The orebody is proven below the existing caving level, with the next vertical block called the Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ). This paper presents an overview of the DMLZ Mine based on recent feasibility level study. The mine is being designed for a peak production rate of 29.2 million mtpy, with 1,803 total ore draw points spread over a panel caving footprint of about 1.3km by 375m. The present reserves for this mine total 501 million tonnes. Located 1,400-1,800m below the original surface, the DMLZ will be one of the deepest caving operations in the world. Production is scheduled to commence in 2015. Discussion is provided on most design aspects including; caving methodology and layouts, geotechnical predictions and risks, ore handling systems, ventilation design and associated infrastructure, high-lift pumping system, cost estimation and expenditure scheduling.

The filtration process has long been utilized in the mining industry and typically associated with processes where clear solutions are required. One definition of filtration states that it is utilized to affect a more complete separation of liquid and solid phases than is possible with settling alone. The development of Diatomaceous Earth filter aids has added a new dimension to filtration technology in the mining industry. It makes possible the filtration of slimes with almost perfect clarity, and at rates that become economical.
