Overlying the sulfide mineralization at Anamax Mining Company's Twin Buttes Mine is an oxidized zone up to one hundred meters in thickness. The principal copper minerals in this zone are chryso-colla, tenorite, cuprite, native copper and copper-manganese-iron wad. This ox¬idized zone also contains minor amounts of uranium ranging in concentration from 0.002 to 0.010 percent. Since pit development through 1980, some 38 million tonnes of oxide ore with copper contents greater than 0.6 percent have been brought to the surface. Copper in the oxide ore is extracted at Twin Buttes in, an agitated sulfuric acid leach plant followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning producing 90 tonnes per day of copper cathode. During leaching of the oxide ores small amounts of uranium are solubilized along with the copper values. This is not limited to Twin Buttes as most acidic copper bearing leach solutions throughout the southwestern United States contain small amounts of uranium.1

"Shin-Yokohama station (tentative name), one of the station of the Sotetsu - Tokyu through line (ST line), is under construction by the OPEN – CUT method. The Underground Soil–Cement Steel Diaphragm Wall is implemented as an earth retaining wall. This earth retaining wall is utilized as a main body of a subway station. It is the first time to utilize this earth retaining wall as the main body. There are two difficult issues for this project. One is that this station is planned under busy major road and there are many underground utilities, for example, an electrical transmission line. Because of that, construction area is limited. The other is that this station is located in a thick soft clay layer. This layer has a high risk of consolidation settlement because of draining during main excavation. Thus, high water tightness is required for this earth retaining wall. This paper reports design and construction methods for the Underground Soil–Cement Steel Diaphragm wall introduced as a part of the body of the subway station.1. OUTLINE OF SHIN-YOKOHAMA STATION 1-1. Location and structure of Shin-Yokohama Station Shin-Yokohama station is an intermediate station on the ST line connected to the Tokaido-Shinkansen bullet train, the JR-Yokohama line and the Yokohama Municipal Subway. Access to Tokyo and the Tokaido- Shinkansen from the eastern part of Yokohama city will be improved by this project. In addition, the number of estimated passengers of this station is one hundred thousand people/day because a soccer stadium (Nissan Stadium: 72,000 people), a huge indoor arena and a hotel are located in this area. This station consists of 4 stories and 3 spans (Max width; 29m, Depth; 33m, Length; 325.5m). Completion image is shown in Figure 2. Generally, stations have 1 platform and 2 trucks. But this station has 2 platforms and 3 tracks because some of ST line trains return at this station and a train deadheads from Hazawa station to this station in an emergency. This station is planned as 4 stories underground station, and the platform is on the lowest story. The reason why this station is in such a deeper position is to prevent the alignment from interfering with the Yokohama Municipal Subway station and foundation piles for bridge piers existing along the alignment. Even under the constraint conditions, earth covering should be shallow as much as possible. As a result, the tunnel edge is very close to the foundation pile, and the gap is only about 2m (Figure 3). In addition, passengers will be able to change trains easily from the ST line to the Yokohama Municipal Subway or vice versa at this station."

An ore zoning technique developed by Climax geologists during the past forty years has been used to contour drill-hole assay values on cross-sections for fourteen porphyry molybdenum deposits in western North America, including the Climax and Henderson orebodies. Detailed geological studies of these large, complex deposits are essential in determining ore controls, which are the factors most critical to the zoning of MoS2 assays and to conceptualizing geologic models. The technique provides a detailed representation of the size, shape, grade distribution, and geologic continuity of the individual deposits. It demands a disciplined approach and adheres to rigorous rules while maintaining flexibility for adaptation to widely varying geologic conditions. By defining the limits that guide and control manual, computer-assisted conventional, and geostatistical reserve estimates, it exerts a strong geologic influence on the estimation process. A combination of ore zoning and geostatistical analysis of molybdenum deposits produces a significantly more accurate, precise, and defendable geologic reserve estimate than other methods.

INTRODUCTION The term "dewatering" refers to removal of water from coal. Water associated with coal can be categorized as "free or surface" and "inherent or chemically bound" moisture.' The free moisture is found on the surface of coal, in capillaries and small spaces between two or more particles. The inherent or chemically bound water is found in the interior of the coal and as part of coal structure. A significant amount of free moisture can be removed by mechanical dewatering techniques. However, inherent moisture can only be removed by applying energy intensive techniques, e.g., direct or indirect heating. Moisture in the coal offsets some of the benefits of coal cleaning. Extra water in clean coal adds to extra cost in transportation, heat lost during vaporization, and plugging of chutes. From a utility perspective, a 1 % increase in moisture can offset a 4.5% decrease in ash.2 Mechanical dewatering can be classified into two major process categories according to the principles involved, namely, 1. Sedimentation-liquid is constrained and particles move freely. 2. Filtration-particles are constrained by a medium and the liquid flows through. Each of the process categories is composed of various separation techniques shown in Fig. Equipment currently being used by the mechanical dewatering of coal of varying size ranges and final moisture content is illustrated in Fig. 8-2. This figure indicates that sizes larger than 13/, in. (37.5 mm) present no particular dewatering problem. Shaker screens of the very crudest types and designs are capable of producing these sizes at low surface moistures. High-speed vibrators are used for the intermediate sizes and can be used for smaller sizes down to 0.02 in. (0.5 mm) if high moistures (15% surface moisture or greater) can be tolerated in the product. Usually, however, the vibrator is not used below 3/, to 3/, in. (9.5 to 6.3 mm) because of the moisture associated with these fine sizes. At this level, centrifugal force is usually employed to aid dewatering. The sorptive and impervious nature of clay materials was recognized long before modem technology allowed us to understand the physiochemistry of clays. In Cyprus, around 5000 BC, sorbent clays were used for fulling woolen cloth. One of the earliest recorded uses of clays as an impervious liner was more than 3200 years ago in the construction of a bitumen-sand-gravel-clay liner built along the embankment of the Tigris River at Assur. Today one of the most common applications for clay minerals in the environmental industry is for use as impermeable barriers to fluid transport. Clay minerals are fine in particle size and thus have large surface areas, which, as a result of intermolecular forces and ionic substitutions, make them excellent materials for both ion exchange and ion sorption. Therefore it was logical to consider certain clay materials for applications in the environmental industry, where they can act as physical and chemical traps for potential contaminants. Certain bentonites have historically been used as sealants for fluids (Grim, 1962), and other clays have been used as sorbents for both water and oil (Haden, Jr., 1972). Prior to the 1980s, disposal of the nation's municipal, commercial, chemical, and nuclear wastes was largely indiscriminate and poorly regulated. This created environmental pollution problems, especially with respect to groundwater contamination. Promulgation of federal regulations like the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA - commonly known as Superfund) have forced a more careful and costly approach to waste disposal. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is the government body charged with enforcing and ensuring compliance with federal regulations governing toxic waste production, storage, and disposal. Widespread application of geotechnology to the design and construction of waste containment systems and to pollution remediation has become necessary due to such laws and because of increasing use of the subsurface environment for the disposal of hazardous wastes. In the United States nearly 1.8 kg of trash is disposed of per person per day, which amounts to nearly 181 Mt per year. This amount is more than double the waste produced in 1960, and these numbers are expected to continue to increase. Canada produces approximately 1.68 kg of waste per person per day. The EPA estimates that in the United States 64% of our garbage is landfilled, 18% recycled, and 18% incinerated. Even with continued increases in recycling and incineration efforts, the EPA projects that the United States will still need 82% of today's landfill capacity in the year 2000. Data on the exact number of landfills in the United States and Canada is conflicting in part because of changing definitions of what constitutes a landfill and because of inadequate record- keeping by some states and provinces. An estimate of the number of municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills in the United States in 1990 to 1991 ranged from 4 462 to 10 467 with an average estimate of 6 600. In Canada the number of MSW landfills reported varied from 5 493 in a 1982 survey to 1 766 reported in a 1991 National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA) survey (Repa and Sheets, 1992b). A properly operated MSW landfill on average requires 1 hectare of land per year per 25 000 people (Coates, 198 1). In addition to MSW facilities, there are also waste disposal facilities needed for hazardous waste and low level and high level radioactive waste. In 1983, approximately 266 Mt of hazardous waste was generated in the United States, almost 50% of this by industrial production. About 68% of the hazardous waste generated in the United States and Canada and almost 50% generated in Europe are still landfilled (Egger, 1987). In 1985, approximately 51 000 m3 of commercially produced low level radioactive waste was disposed of in radioactive waste disposal sites across the United States (Jungling and Greeves, 1989). By 1987, the US defense program had produced approximately 10 000 t of high level nuclear waste. In addition, there were approximately 14 000 t of spent fuel assemblies from commercial nuclear power plants in temporary storage; the amount is expected to nearly triple by the year 2000. Presently most commercial spent fuel assemblies are stored in water-filled pools at nuclear power plants. Defense waste is stored on federal reservations in surface and underground steel tanks (Anon., 1987). Under federal law nearly all waste disposal and containment sites are required to have a liner or barrier and a cover system design that meets federal- or state-approved hydraulic conductivity requirements for the type of waste that the site will receive. When approved materials, necessary for constructing the waste containment structure, are not available on site, one of the most economical ways to meet these requirements is through the use of clay, soil/clay, or clay/geotextile materials. In a 1991 survey by NSWMA of its members and other select private sector facilities, 81% of the surveyed landfills had some type of liner system. About 75% of these liners were clay materials (either recompacted or natural). The remaining 30% were using flexible membrane liners as part of a liner system. Clay liner materials are most commonly used in the South, Midwest, West-central, and South-central regions of the United States. About 93% of the landfill facilities had closure plans, and of these 91 % were using clay materials in some way for the final cover material (Repa and Sheets, 1992a). Waste barriers and containment structures take several basic forms, and they are used in a variety of different applications: 1) cutoff walls, 2) soil or soil/clay-admix liners, 3) geosynthetic bentonite-clay/geotextile membranes, 4) radioactive waste containment barriers, and 5) synthetic geomembranes. Investigaciones preliminares sugieren que bajo esquemas de dosificación normales los contenidos residuales totales de DRO en aguas de procesos deben estar limitados a la fracción soluble en agua (WSF por sus siglas en inglés) sub-ppm. Es más, los hidrocarburos aromáticos poli-cíclicos (PAH por sus siglas en inglés) debería segmentarse de manera proporcional con los compuestos orgánicos de diesel (DRO). El propósito de este estudio fue confirmar estos resultados en pruebas de flotación realizadas en laboratorio. Se midieron los contenidos totales de DRO Y PAH en aguas asociadas con los flujos o corrientes de concentrados y relaves. Los resultados muestran que las aguas con concentrados tenían de manera consistente mayores cantidades de DRO que las aguas de relaves. Es más, los contenidos de DRO en ambos flujos generalmente se incrementaban con el aumento de la dosis de diesel. Petro-diesel is a common collector for coal flotation, but the partitioning of diesel range organics (DROs) in process streams has not been widely studied. Preliminary research suggested that under normal dosing schemes total residual DRO contents in process waters should be limited to the sub-ppm water-soluble fraction (WSF). Further, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) should partition proportionately with DROs. The purpose of this study was to confirm these findings in laboratory flotation tests. Total DRO and specific PAH contents were measured in the waters associated with the concentrate and tailings streams. The results show that concentrate waters consistently had higher amounts of DROs than tailing waters. Moreover, the DRO contents in both streams generally increased with increasing diesel dosage. In line with preliminary research, DROs appeared to be limited to the WSF, and PAHs tended to partition proportionately with DROs. Under typical operating conditions, it appears that residual DROs should not present an environmental concern, but conditions should be avoided that allow significant overdosing of diesel.

"The formation of geopolymers from mine tailings using cold-bonding processes is known to be possible. Numerous cold-bonding methods exist, but the hydrothermal processes involving high temperatures and pressures in the presence of steam have been found to be the most ideal. This paper presents the results of successful preliminary studies to apply hydrothermal bonding processes to mine tailings agglomerates. Particle-size analysis revealed the particle size of the tailings waste to be 80 percent passing at 35 µm. The compressive strengths of the tailings pellets were shown to increase with time in the curing vessel, closely approaching the 400 lbf of standard iron ore concentrate pellets. These strengths are sufficient to allow use of the tailings pellets as aggregate materials for asphalt and cement. Additional applications may be possible, including reprocessing to extract more valuable materials and usage as agglomerated road-bed materials, backfills for building foundations, and replacements for sand and lime in cement.IntroductionMine tailings are a waste byproduct of ore concentration and are available in large quantities across the world. Despite their abundance, they have received little attention or consideration for beneficial use. One reason is that the chemical nature of the material is not well known. Another factor that has hindered direct usage is the fine particle size. This raises the questions: what is the composition of the tailings, and how can such fine solids be beneficially used? Because the mining industry produces concentrates, the tailings may be treated as concentrates and processed in the same fashion, but it would be inefficient to consider full sintering or induration conditions for materials that have little ore content. To achieve sustainable operation, the development of technologies to use these tailings is necessary. Mine tailings should not be considered waste, and an “out of sight, out of mind” mentality does not represent a sustainable solution for the future.One iron ore mine in Michigan is estimated to have accumulated more than 400 million metric tons of tailings during its last 30 years of operation, with an additional 180 million metric tons accumulated before the ore body is depleted. These mine tailings currently have no practical use, largely due to a scarcity of knowledge of their true physiochemical nature. It is thought that lack of quality control of the waste material prevents its use, but variability in the unprocessed ore prevents a consistent waste stream composition. The fact that the tailings are available in such great quantities makes them an extremely attractive resource. However, developing a sustainable, low-cost means of repurposing the mine tailings waste as a construction material may only be completed once the tailings are physically and chemically understood. Due to the high silica content of the material studied, cold bonding was determined to be the most viable method for processing the tailings into a usable product."

The adsorption of dialkyl di-and mono-thio-phosphinates on gold, silver and gold-silver alloys has been studied in the present work. These reagents, which are selective collectors for sulfide flotation, have been found to improve precious metals recovery from ores. Voltammetric studies have indicated that dithiophosphinate adsorbs on gold at much higher potentials than on silver, while monothiophosphinate adsorbs only on silver. However, both adsorb on gold-silver alloys with the adsorption potential decreasing with increasing silver content. Using FTIR spectroscopic measurements, the surface species formed during the interactions of these collectors have been identified. The results of the electrochemical and spectroscopic measurements have been compared with the contact angle data obtained at controlled potential conditions.

The design of coal-mine layouts is based on the knowledge of a broad range of geological and geotechnical parameters, which must be determined from a sequence of exploration programs. It follows that any weaknesses in selecting, determining, interpreting or utilizing these data are inevitably reflected into the mine-planning process. In this paper, the main methods of exploration are reviewed and evaluated with the emphasis on acquisition, interpretation and storage of variables pertaining to mine-design. Some common problems are highlighted and recommendations are given for improving the utilization of data and optimizing coal-mine design procedures.

Four counties in Indiana--LaPorte, Vigo, Vanderburgh, and Switzerland--have potential for deep underground limestone mining because they are in or are near high population areas and have no surface-minable limestone de- posits. The principal markets are Gary-South Bend, Terre Haute, Evansville, and Cincinnati. Minable seams suitable for aggregate are 120 to 150 meters (400 to 500 feet) below the surface in LaPorte and Vigo Counties, about 90 meters (300 feet) below the surface in Switzerland County, and about 600 meters (2,000 feet) below the surface in Vanderburgh County. Some deposits are also suitable for high-purity uses or for cement raw materials, which enhances their potential for exploitation.

Abstract. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, as part of its effort to maintain an adequate supply of minerals and metals to meet national economic and strategic needs, is conducting research on the pneumatic recovery of coarse mica. A system of crushers, screens, and zigzag air classifiers is used to concentrate coarse liberated mica particles from mica ore and from the waste tailings of abandoned mica operations. The plus 0.21-millimeter-size mica is effectively recovered by this method. The mica concentrates produced contain over 90 percent mica. The method recovered up to 78 percent of the mica in the samples. As a dry concentration method, the pneumatic-beneficiation technique may be advantageous in areas of limited water resource.

Commercial production of heavy minerals from plant tailings streams is undergoing study by Syncrude Canada Lrd. When tar sand from an open pit mine is processed and up- graded to synthetic crude oil, heavy minerals can be recovered from the extraction circuit and can be upgraded to provide concentrates of zircon and titanium minerals. The titanium minerals concentrate consisting of a mixture of ilmenite, leucoxene and rutile, could be utilized as recovered or could be upgraded to synthetic rutile. With the construction of further synthetic crude oil plants in Western Canada a large reserve of heavy minerals will become available for utilization.

Potassic alteration domains of greenstone belt lode gold deposits are characterized by systematic partitioning between different groups of incompatible elements, such that Al, Ga, Th, U, Ti and V are decoupled from K, Rb, Ba, Cs and Tl. The former group of elements have concentrations and interelement ratios in alteration domains which reflect host rock control, implying approximately isochemical behaviour. In contrast, K, Rb, and Ba are strongly coenriched, and linearly correlated over th4ee orders of magnitude in abundance, where K/Rb = 260, and K/Ba = 40: K/Cs (-10 ) and K/T1 (-2x10 ) are also correlated, though more weakly. Lithium abundances, and Rb/Sr ratios are erratic in altered rocks. These interelement trends, collectively, are present in deposits variously hosted by ultramafic, mafic, or felsic volcanic rocks, and sediments or granitoids.

Before undertaking to present to you a current analysis of copper, I would like to preface my remarks with a few observations that in themselves have a bearing upon commodity reviews in general. Having sat through a large number of such reviews since first joining the A. I. M. E. nearly forty years ago, I have no illusions about the hazards of the undertaking. If a speaker presents a statistical summary of commodity economics for the last year, most of his audience, having already read at least four commodity summaries on the identical subject, either get up and walk out or fall asleep. Should the latter happen, and were the listener to tumble from his chair and break his neck, obviously the speaker is liable. The subject matter seldom lends itself to histrionics on the part of the speaker so dangers of heart attack in the audience are not too great. Therefore the speaker, in order to retain listener interest, resorts to prophecy. Such venture was undertaken long ago by weather soothsayers, the "harouspex" of Ancient Rome, who generally cut up a sacrificial sheep and after staring at the entrails made their predictions which I understand had a batting average somewhat better than those undertaken on Wall Street based upon Dow Jones averages. Not being a licensed harouspex I cannot undertake predictions. I shall, however, fall back upon the experts.

A large portion of the energy consumed in copper concentrators is used to reduce the particle size of the feed by crushing and grinding. The cost of metal production could be reduced if low-grade particles of cm size were removed prior to further processing. Two copper sulfide ore samples (3 × 1 cm) from Arizona were analyzed by micro X-ray computed tomography (Micro-XCT) to determine the grade of copper sulfide in each particle. For copper ore sample A, a significant number of particles contained very low amounts of copper, while some particles had copper sulfide grains of mm size. Based on Micro-XCT, it was expected that 85% of the copper for sample A could be recovered at 65% of mass rejection during preconcentration by sorting. However, in sample B (a different copper ore), distribution of copper sulfide was dispersed primarily in each ore particle, so for the particle size class of 3 × 1 cm, liberation of copper sulfide and gangue minerals was not significant. In view of the XCT results, dual energy (DE) X-ray radiography was used as a basis for sorting. Previous DE X-ray radiography of a drill core sample demonstrated that this rapid detection method can be used to identify rich or poor Cu-bearing coarse particles. Pilot scale X-ray sorting of sample A (10 × 1 cm) showed 31% rejection of a 0.08% Cu gangue product with a corresponding recovery of 90% copper.

Natural resources are the reservoir from which society draws its material sustenance. Although there is a growing awareness of the need for aesthetic resources such as space for recreation and natural beauty, the basic resources are soil, air, water, and minerals including fuel. Minera's and all sources of energy gain in relative importance with advancing technology and expanding industrilization. In the highly industrialized economy of the United States, almost every aspect of man's life is touched in some way by a product of, the mineral; industries. Agriculture owes much of its productivity to mineral-based fertilizers, insecticides, and mechanical equipment. Modern construction, manufacturing, communications, and transportation are all dependent on nonmetallic minerals, metals, and fuels. Throughout history, those nations with access to minerals, and the technology for using them, have gained ascendency. Before World War II the leading powers also were, leading coal producers. In order of declining rank the five leading' coal producers were the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, the USSR, and Japan. That the military victory went to the side with the greater' capacity to convert iron and coal into tools of industry, and weapons, is' more than coincidence. It is a fundamental' fact of existence. It is axiomatic that the United States must have a continually increasing supply of minerals if we are to meet the needs of our burgeoning population for a comfortable standard of living and for national security.

Sulphuric acid leaching is the most common method of recovering uranium from its ores and in the following discussion various alternative low cost routes are investigated for recovering uranium from milled ore acid leach liquors. Historically uranium has been recovered from dilute impure leach liquors by packed bed ion exchange (IX), solvent extraction (SX) or a combination of both. All three process routes as commonly practised require complete separation of leached solids and liquids, as well as extensive solids washing in order to reduce soluble uranium losses to a minimum. Separation and washing are costly and often require equipment covering large areas of land. The size and capital cost of the post leach solids washing operation is controlled by the ease of washing the slimes fraction of the ore and the key to the problem of cost reduction, as many others have realised, lies in the ability to separate the slimes fraction of the ore from the more easily washed sands, to wash the sands in low cost equipment and to recover uranium from the slimes stream. Sands and slimes are usually defined in this context as the material larger than, and smaller than, 325 mesh (44 microns). The proposed flowsheets which minimise solid-liquid separation and washing have usually incorporated ion exchange (Refs 1,2,3), and resin in pulp is in fact practised in several mills in the USA (Ref 1). The resins used in these flowsheets and [cranium] recovery throughout the world have been strong base resins which load rapidly and are moderately selective for the uranyl sulphate complex anion over the range of pH which is conveniently achieved in an acid leach operation. Strong base resins are, however, not as selective as weak base resins and weak base liquid reagents owing to the adsorption of competing anions, some of which find their way into the product while others act as resins poisons. Ion exchange using strong base resins must therefore be followed by a more selective weak base SX purification step if pure yellow cake is required.

During the recent expansion of precipitate copper production at the Chino Mines Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation, Santa Rita, New Mexico, local studies of the dump leaching process were intensified. As these studies progressed it became apparent that a reliable method for locating leach solutions within the dump was required, since the contact between leach solutions and the copper-bearing material would determine, in great part, the recovery of values. In the past, the problem of determining leach solution contact has been attacked by various methods, including destructive testing (dump dissection), indirect observation (such as chloride or dye tracers), and mathematical or laboratory model studies. These methods have not proved completely satisfactory for the studies now being developed. Investigation of methods for in situ observation of leach solutions led to consideration of radiation logging in drill holes, which are petro¬leum exploration and development techniques for locating fluids and measuring porosity in the subsurface. Standard oil field logging equipment was leased, modified, and tested. After successful testing, the equipment was purchased for additional studies. Applications and results of the methods are described in this paper.
