The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Ground Control Engineering Branch is investigating the use of shotcrete in weak rock mass mines with the objective of reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from rock fall accidents. When shotcrete is used as part of a multi-element ground support system there is a need to know when the material has developed a threshold early compressive strength of approximately 1 MPa (145 psi) for safe re-entry of miner and machine into shotcreted mine workings. This equates to the material having developed enough strength to be self-supporting and allow for emplacement of the remaining support elements that require drilling of the shotcrete layer without degradation. NIOSH researchers have developed methods and portable test equipment to measure shotcrete strength on-site in the first six hours after application using the ASTM C 116-90 (1990) standard. These advances were demonstrated in tests on five commercially available shotcrete mixes, sprayed as dry shotcrete using the field expedient methods and equipment. The strength values from these tests allowed for real-time identification of the early strength threshold and were consistent with strengths reported using laboratory-type equipment. The findings of this NIOSH research for determining shotcrete early strength can improve mine safety by providing a method for determining initial site specific material property values to be used for design and as a means to conduct on-site quality control and monitoring during production.

"Slurry Microtunneling is a well-established technology building on over 20 years of experience in successful tunnel installations under all kinds of soil conditions across the U.S. and Canada. Recent microtunnel installations prove that initial hesitation, e.g. curved drives, is fading and long-distance pipe jacking projects as well as lake outfalls are being considered. One of the younger technologies is Direct Pipe®, which combines the benefits of HDD and Slurry Microtunneling. It fits exactly into the area where HDD is not feasible or too risky to apply. The paper points out the benefits of the Direct Pipe® technology for owners, engineers and contractors and discusses the latest developments of Slurry Microtunneling for long-distance, curved drives and sea/lake outfalls with wet recovery of the equipment such as on the ‘Keswick Outfall Project’ in Ontario. The first Direct Pipe® installation in the US was executed in August 2010. Since then, another 22 crossings have been carried out amongst a total of more than 60 Direct Pipe® crossings worldwide. INTRODUCTION Pipelines installed underground are indispensable for supplying the growing world population with water, oil, gas and electricity, for removing wastewater and for providing functioning telephone and communications networks. During recent years the limits of trenchless applications have been permanently shifted, leading to higher and more stringent project requirements and consequently new technologies, either as further development of existing methods, or through the development of new methods by incorporating elements of proven technologies. MICROTUNNELING TRENDS IN NORTH AMERICA Slurry Microtunneling has a wider geological application range in comparison to EPB and hard rock Microtunneling. The Slurry MTBM can be equipped with specific cutting wheels to cope with different soil conditions. The most flexible and most often employed type is the mixed soil cutting wheel, which contains a mixture of disc cutters as well as scrapers for varying soil conditions from cohesive soils (clay, silts) to highly permeable soils including sands, gravels and cobbles and even hard ground formations such as rock and boulders. A detailed geotechnical report provides the appropriate data to configure the MTBM and its features to the ground conditions expected. Mixshield or hydroshield (AVN/AVND) MTBMs in particular, can be safely operated with little overburden (~ 3-5 x machine diameter) and minimum risk of frac-out or settlement on the surface. This is especially beneficial in urban areas with sensitive buildings or for river crossings with protected fish habitats."

DC Water’s Clean Rivers (DCCR) program involves the construction of approximately 29 km (18 mi) of CSO tunnels in Potomac Group soils in the Washington DC area. Soils include an upper predominantly over-consolidated fine grained plastic material facies (P/A) and lower predominantly coarsegrained facies (PTX). As earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are mainly used in such soils, the correct approach to soil conditioning can make a considerable difference in TBM performance. Soil conditioning laboratory tests are often completed during the planning phase prior to TBM excavation to develop a baseline for soil conditioning, reduce risks, minimize costs, and improve performance. However, only a few basic tests are standardized to date, and conditioning regimes are fine-tuned during the mining phase. The paper illustrates the effort carried out to identify the correct soil conditioning regime for both PA and PTX facies to improve TBM overall performance and reduce ground movement during the excavation of the Northeast Boundary Tunnel (NEBT) in Washington DC.

This study outlines implemented tactics and results for community empowerment through participation in questionnaire surveys, educational programs, and discussion on sustainable sourcing from new critical raw materials (CRMs) projects. Utilising questionnaire surveys, including the Public Participation Geographic Information System (PPGIS), the research gathered public opinions from Estonia, Germany, Poland, and Zambia, receiving 1,068 responses. These responses addressed various social, economic, and environmental issues related to CRM projects. Feedback from educational courses with participants from over 25 nations and public events provided additional insights. The collected data and feedback offer crucial input for advancing sustainable and responsible CRM sourcing strategies in these regions.

During the first four decades of flotation practice, close to 200 machine designs were patented, although only about a score were ever used commercially. By the end of that period, the rigors of use had resulted in obsolescence of most pneumatic cells, with a few mechanical cells dominating the field. After World War II, newer designs began to appear but most were modifications in varying degrees of older designs with special features added. Of the dozen or so most recent developments, almost all are pneumatic, relying on compressed air instead of impellers for motive power, although in several cases pumps supplement compressors. Table 1 lists a few of the more fully documented new cells, with their significant characteristics, along with similar characteristics of a widely used mechanical cell. New designs in general are emphasizing: bubble size control; in several cases, methods for delivering feed directly to the froth; methods for introducing and dispersing air through nozzles, eductors, packed beds, or permeable walls; and variable cell volumes, relative to capacities, ranging from very small, with less than a second of retention time, to the largest, with retention times of over 20 min. An important question is the extent to which any of the newer designs are based on locating weaknesses in current mechanical cell designs and then using these as a starting point for innovations. In the present study, the key subprocesses which must take place in a cell are outlined; mechanical cells are analyzed to establish where weaknesses may exist; and then alternative subprocesses are considered which could effect improvements. COMPONENTS FOR CELL DESIGN It is assumed that mineral surface chemistry has been modified as necessary to provide optimum potential floatability. While the cell process may affect this to a degree, cell design is primarily concerned with actualizing the existing potential floatability. Underground instrumentation and observations at longwall panels have demonstrated that the growth of main roof causes an extremely high roof weighting on the shields. It can sometimes result in catastrophic effects on the support when the roof weighting intensity far exceeds the support capacity. In this paper, a comprehensive study was conducted on characteristics of main roof breakage and its effects on shields at different locations, based on the monitored shield data, theoretical analysis, and finite element analysis. With the help of theoretical analysis and numerical modeling, stress distribution and redistribution in the main roof were analyzed in detail to define main roof failure modes and understand the maximum roof weighting intensity imposed on the shields. From this study, it was found that the effects of main roof breakage on shields are chiefly related to the shield initial setting condition and the final failure mode of the main roof.

Gold-silver and copper-gold deposits with high-temperature wallrock alteration of Ca-Mg-Fe-Al silicates occur in ca. 3.0 Ga old greenstone belts of the Yilgarn Block, Western Australia. The deposits are hosted by amphibolite-facies komatiites, basalts and BIF, controlled by ductile shear zones and located within the contact-metamorphic aureoles of composite granodiorite-granite batholiths. Disseminated sulfides and free gold form foliation-parallel ore zones in a gangue of anhydrous silicates (garnet, clinopyroxene, olivine), hydrous silicates (amphibole, biotite) and calcite. The deposits may be classified on the basis of their dominant economic metals as: 1(1) Gold skarns with substantial silver as by-product, represented by the Marvel Loch mine (production: 2,200,000 t at 3.5 g/t Au), and characterized by the mineral association pyrrhotite, loellingite, arsenopyrite, galena, gold and magnetite. (2) Gold skarns with low silver contents, represented by the Nevoria mine (production:1,850,000 t at 3.4 g/t Au), and characterized by the mineral association pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, gold, Bi-tellurides and magnetite. (3) Copper-gold skarns, represented by the Elverdton mine (production: 850,000 t at .7 5 Cu, 0.81 g/t Au), and characterized by the mineral association magnetite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, gold and Ag-Bi tellurides.

The successful genetic manipulation of T. ferrooxidans is partly dependent on an understanding of the molecular biology of the organism. For optimum controlled expression of foreign DNA in T. ferrooxidans it is important that donor DNA is derived from bacteria that are genetically similar to T. ferrooxidans or placed under the control of T. ferrooxidans transcriptional promoters. Several structural genes and their controlling regions from T. ferrooxidans have been isolated and their DNA sequenced. These include the genes that encode the nitrogenase enzyme (nifHDK genes), glutamine synthetase (glnA gene) and the recA gene. These genes and the identical genes from a wide variety of other bacteria have been compared at levels of DNA sequence, protein sequence. Where possible, gene expression as well as transcriptional control and protein function of the cloned genes were tested in the enteric bacterium Escherichia coli. The two genes involved in nitrogen metabolism were either expressed or possessed the necessary elements for expression in other bacteria. In contrast the recA gene was not expressed in E. coli from its own promoter. The two gene products that would be tested (glnA and recA) were fully functional in E. coli. The relevance of these findings to the genetic manipulation of T. ferrooxidans is discussed

A general approach to the synthesis of mineral process control systems is presented. The first phase of the control system design consists of specifying the control objectives, process variables and their interactions; these topics will be discussed with specific reference to mineral processing. The second phase Is con¬cerned with selection of control strategies algorithms, instrumenta¬tion, and other components of the control system and is discussed at length. These concepts are then illustrated by a flotation control case study.

Solution mining, sometimes also refered to as chemical mining or bacterial mining, is an innovative technology which, by making use of proper chemical reagents and taking advantage of bio-chemical action of some micro-organism species, can dissolve effectively most. desirable metallic values from ores and then extract them profitably from the resultant metal-bearing solution by suitable means to form the metal product it is more preferable to the conventional mining methods, not only because of its capability to improve working conditions and minimize environmental problems either underground or on surface, but also for its amenability in particular, to exploit low-grade or submarginal ore bodies, or those deposits which are too deep-seated to be mined out economically. Furthermore, it also provides a potential approach to win metals directly from their ores or ore-deposits in-situ by more simplified methods and at a lower cast than the conventional mining-milling-smelting process would do previously. Hence, in developing countries such as China, it will most, probably become a new mining tool of great promise. (1)

To evaluate methane explosion hazards in underground longwall coal mines, researchers at the Colorado School of Mines developed a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model along with a 1/40th-scale, optically accessible, physical model of a longwall mining section. In this project, CFD models assisted in the design of the physical model to ensure specifications were met to accurately represent the scaling physics as well as to assist in narrowing the experimental matrix and identifying key locations for sensor placement to measure velocity, pressure and gas concentrations. This research will help develop strategies for methane monitoring to prevent methane ignitions and explosions in longwall coal operations.

INTRODUCTION Newmont Gold Company's Rain operations are located in Elko County, Nevada, approximately 9 miles southeast of the Town of Carlin.The property was submitted to Newmont Exploration Limited in 1979 and underwent development drilling over the course of the next four years, culminating in the completion of a project feasibility study in October 1986. Initial project scope included development of an open pit mine, an 815,000 DSTPY heap leach, a 572,000 DSTPY mill (Mill No. 3), and associated support facilities. Approval to proceed was given by Newmont Gold Company management in June 1987. Detailed engineering began in early July, followed immediately thereafter by procurement of major equipment components through various second hand sources. PROJECT DESIGN Keep It Simple In early August, Newmont Mining Corporation, parent company of Newmont Gold Company, became the takeover target of an "investor" group headed by T. Boone Pickens. Details of the ensuing events have been well documented by the press; suffice to say their impact on this project was material and required immediate flowsheet changes. Project design throughputs were increased to 1,000,000 DSTPY and 760,000 DSTPY for the heap leach and mill, respectively, in mid- September. These changes caused major project headaches as all general arrangement drawings had been approved and structural steel as well as concrete contracts were in place. Additionally, ground breaking was to commence in two weeks time! Rain project management assembled shortly after the announced changes, to devise an engineering and construction strategy capable of handling these new business conditions. The project had been justified using a gold price of $325 per ounce with a forecasted overall cash cost per ounce of $230. Hence, strict control of capital expenditures was necessary to maintain development economics. Mill start-up had also been moved forward one month, to August 1, 1988. To meet an already ambitious schedule, construction techniques needed to be simple and proven as most of the facilities were planned for erection during winter at a site with design criteria of -40F and 90 mile per hour winds. Perhaps the most critical factor requiring consideration was that of personnel. Newmont Gold's revised business plan called for corporate-wide production increases from 587,000 ounces per year in 1987, to 1,400,000 ounces by mid- 1989. Labor requirements were forecasted to grow from 900 employees to over 2,100. This fact, in combination with the rapid growth of Nevada's gold industry, led to the expectation that turnover of operating personnel would be extremely high. It was concluded that, to meet cost, time, and operational goals, the necessary strategy could be succinctly put - "Keep It Simple." The interactions of mineralogy, chemistry and mechanics in an ore concentrator are highly complex, so it can be particularly hard to measure the impact of a specific plant change. This paper describes a method for modeling a baseline metal recovery so that the value of a major process improvement can be measured. This method only considers variables that cannot be optimized, such as mineralogy or equipment availability. Linear regression, random forests, extreme gradient boosting (XGB), and simple two-layer neural network models of process value were tested as candidate baseline model types to assess the impact on throughput and recovery in a copper concentrator. XGB performed the best in terms of accuracy for both throughput and recovery models. Using an XGB model of nonoptimizable process variables provides an accurate, dynamic baseline that can be compared with continuous production data to determine the value added by major concentrator improvements in real time.

"The history of the mining industry is littered with in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC), which should not be confused with the International Protocol for Carbon Capture, projects that failed. The failure is not the technical one of “did it achieve the desired tonnage rate for a longish test period” but, rather, the far more important one of “did it provide return on the investment in the manner that was promised?” While quite a few can claim the former, very few system installations can claim the latter.The reasons for the many failures are numerous, but they are all characterized by a combination of an element of engineering optimism in any, or all of the production rates, the productivity, or the operating and maintenance costs and in predicting the continuity of operating conditions. In these days of big data, propagating such a situation is rapidly becoming unforgivable.In this article, the three most common scenarios put to the corporate board for approval, and the logic as to why they were selected, are examined (with the irony included intentionally).• Fully mobile crusher, fed by a shovel and conveyed out of the pit to a waste dump / process plant.• Semimobile crusher (much more expensive than a fixed crushing station but which apparently allows trucks to short haul inside the pit and improve productivity), which moves when the face moves.• Relocatable crusher (more expensive than a fixed crushing station but which gets relocated at great expense after all the fixed infrastructure impeding relocation is demolished) fed by trucks that don’t leave the pit mostly.This paper will also consider the truth about their operational performance and associate costs."

Chemical, mineralogical, and petrographic data have been obtained for suites of plutonic rock samples from the Guichon Creek Batholith of British Columbia and the Mineral-Iron Mountain-Sturgill Peak- Cuddy Mountain-Peck Mountain areas of western Idaho. Intrusions at these two geographically separate localities represent composite plutons ranging from early gabbro through quartz diorite to late grano- diorite and more silicic-alkalic phases. They are early Mesozoic (200 m.y.) in age, and contain porphyry-type mineralization in close spatial and temporal association with late-stage intrusions of porphyry, aplite, pegmatite, and (or) breccia. Country rocks are eugeo-synclinal assemblages of metasedimentary and metavolcanic greenstones of Permian, Triassic, and Jurassic age. The petrochemical evolution of these intrusions, and the effects of subsequent hydrothermal alteration and metallization, are illustrated by standard ternary diagrams of the major oxide and mineralogical data. Samples plotted on an AFM diagram suggest a calc-alkaline magma trend. However, their distributions on NKC and Qz-Kf-Pf diagram show well-defined trondhjemitic (Na20-rich) and tonalitic (quartz-rich) variants to this trend, which are similar in part to those reported for mineralized island arc plutons of the northern Caribbean and southwest Pacific, but which contrast markedly to those for continental plutons of the Bingham District, Boulder Batholith, districts of southern Arizona, and elsewhere.

"Gaseous explosions are one of the most hazardous incidents in process and mining industries. Experimental research in this area is shown to be high risk and expensive. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques are reasonable alternatives to experiments; specifically when testing large scale gaseous explosions such as methane explosion in underground mines. The dimensions of a confined space where explosions could occur vary significantly. Thus, the scaling effect on explosion parameters is worth to be investigated using CFD tools. In this research paper, the impact of scaling on the explosion overpressures is investigated by employing two scaling factors. These two factors are the Gas-fill Length scaling factor (FLSF) and the Hydraulic Diameter scaling factor (HDSF). The combinations of eight HDSFs (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, and 100) and five HDSFs (0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 8) will cover a wide range of space dimensions where flammable gas could accumulate. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the selected premixed combustion and turbulence models. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence model was used because it shows accuracy compared to the widely used Reynolds’ averaged models for the scenarios investigated in the experiments. Researchers also simulated methane explosions in both deflagration and detonation regimes using different numerical schemes. Three major conclusions can be drawn from the simulation results. (1) The overpressure increases with both FLSF and HDSF within the deflagration regime; (2) in an explosion duct with length to diameter ratio greater than 54, detonation is more likely to be triggered for stoichiometric methane/air mixture; (3) overpressure increases as an increment hydraulic diameter of a geometry within deflagration regime. INTRODUCTION The most typical category of gaseous explosion accidents is methane explosion accidents in the mining industry. It normally leads to significant economic loss and massive amount of casualties (McPherson, 1993). It could occur in unconfined spaces, such as combustion due to flammable gas leakage, as well as confined spaces, such as inner-combustion in process equipment and methane explosions in airways of underground mines. Gaseous explosions in confined spaces are more intensive compared to unconfined spaces provided that the total energy of explosives is the same. In addition, explosion characteristics are also affected by the geometry of a selected confined space. The size of confined spaces commonly encountered in process and mining industries could differ as much as an order of four (Catlin & Johnson, 1992). A better understanding of the scaling effect on gaseous explosions could contribute to explosion mitigation and prevent operation activities within high risk regions. This research paper has investigated this scaling effect and its impact on explosion propagation. The approach to investigate explosions is either experimental or numerical. Large scale explosion experiments are often costly and dangerous (Catlin, 1991; Zhang, Pang, & Zhang, 2011). Lab scale experiments and numerical methods are common alternatives. However, it is not yet clear if the findings in lab scale experiments can be used to represent the explosion characteristics or not. On the other hand, CFD modeling has been used to simulate chemical combustions and, thus, can be used to evaluate the scaling effects in methane explosions."

The Don River & Central Waterfront Coxwell Sanitary Bypass Tunnel (CBT) Project in Toronto will extend approximately 10.5 km from Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant west under Lake Shore Boulevard, north under Bayview Avenue and east through the Don River park area to the Coxwell Ravine Park. The tunnel is currently being mined by using a shielded dual-mode tunnel boring machine (open and close) capable of operating in EPB mode and lined by using a precast concrete segmental tunnel linear with an internal diameter of 6,300 mm and external diameter of 6,900 mm. The CBT is expected to be excavated mainly through shale bedrock of the Georgian Bay Formation, at approximately 50 meters deep. The tunnel crosses a buried bedrock valley in two locations, in the southern portion of the alignment, adjacent to the Don River, and at the northern portion of the alignment approaching the CX-1 shaft. In these two locations, the bedrock cover is expected to be less than 6 meters. The risk of encountering weathered bedrock, significant ground water inflows or surficial soil deposits through these buried valleys was identified during the design phase. The contract required the TBM to be designed with the ability to probe drill ahead of the TBM and convert to EPB mode if necessary, to cross this area. This paper will discuss the additional exploration that was performed by the contractor to identify the extent of this buried valley, the plan going into the zone of potential weathered shale, and the actual conditions encountered.

Utilizing automation is one way to improve competitiveness. Roof and rib bolting in underground coal mines has not changed significantly for more than 40 years. Most roof bolting is still a largely manual process involving high levels of staff carrying out repetitive work. Roof bolting statistically has one of the highest levels of underground accidents, including finger, hand, and arm injuries. Operators are exposed to falling objects and becoming entangled in roof bolting apparatus while roughly moving awkward 6-ft drill steels and roof bolts. It is estimated that over 25 million roof bolts are installed annually in the U.S. underground coal market with well over 1,500 operators involved in roof bolting on a day-to-day basis. Recently electrohydraulic roof bolting rigs have been installed to offer partial automation of the drilling cycle and the bolting cycle. The next stage is to provide a storage and loading system to allow full automation of fullcolumn resin roof bolts. This paper reviews the latest electrohydraulic roof bolting equipment and discusses the testing of a fully automated drill rig. Full electronic control allows each step of the roof bolting process to be recorded, providing a digital record of each installation, including hole depth, spin time, gel time, torque, and cycle time. Other benefits include monitoring of water pressure and flow, used to prevent blocked drill steels as well as digital fault finding. A fully automated roof bolting machine greatly improves operator safety and gives high-quality repeatable roof bolting with reduced cycle times.

Over the past 15 years, roof fall rates have decreased by two-thirds in U.S. coal mines and by even more in regions where the roof is weakest. This remarkable reduction in the number of roof falls has been accomplished with more effective roof support systems. The purpose of this paper is to present an empirical design methodology that uses real-world data to quantify the basic roof-support concepts that have been successful in the United States. A new computer package, called Analysis of Mine Roof Support (AMRS), implements the design methodology.
