One of the most important considerations in the efficient operation of an under¬ground mine is the haulage system. Often the determining factor between profit or loss is the quick removal of ore and waste from the working places to secondary and main-line haulage areas, and so on to the outside. Important, too, is moving supplies from the surface to the working faces so that the loading process can continue with little interruption. Men must he transported in a rapid but safe manner. It has been through the efficient use and generally the combination of mine cars, track, belt conveyors and rubber-tired haulage equipment that underground operations have been able to compete with the more popular strip or surface mining. As near-surface ore bodies are exhausted, underground haulage will play an expanding part in economically furnishing the world's needs for all types of minerals. The choice of underground haulage equipment, wherever possible, should be one that will give the smallest overall cost of ore removal during the life of the mine while meeting necessary safety requirements. The reader is referred to Sec. 12 for equipment such as scrapers and load-dump-¬haul units that perform loading as well as haulage duties. 14.1-MINE CARS AND TRACK NILES E. GROSVENOR Main-Line and Secondary Haulage-Many mines today use a combination of belt and rail haulage. Even if a- belt system is used to carry the product from the face to the surface, track is used to transport workmen and supplies. A track system, when properly installed, will provide interruption-free and safe haulage. Schrecengost 2 lists the following as major advantages of track haulage: 1. Safety in transporting men in and out of the mine in personnel cars. 2. Easy and rapid transportation of supervisory personnel. 3. A temporary shutdown occasioned by a roof fall or power failure along the haulage system will not shut down the production areas. 4. Quick availability of repair parts and supplies. 5. Large pieces of coal or rock can be handled without damage to the haulage equipment. 6. In areas where quality fluctuates noticeably, different cars may be separated out for special preparation. 7. Rock or equipment may be loaded and moved out of the mine without interference with the production or preparation of the coal. 14.1.1-MINE CARS Mine cars with steel bodies are used in all types of present-day mining. Wooden cars usually are more bulky and less resistant to wear and damage, but are more easily repaired. Regardless of the type of mine car selected, it is most practical to standardize on one type or make to simplify repairs and limit the amount of spare parts necessary to stock. Rigid-body flat-bottomed cars are simpler and usually lower than others of equal capacity. It is capable of: predicting final surface movement and deformation over underground openings; predicting dynamic surface movement and deformation process associated with underground lingual mining operations; processing and bookkeeping subsidence survey data; recommending subsidence parameters for those new coal mines where no subsidence data are available; and deducting subsidence parameters from collected subsidence data.

INTRODUCTION As practiced today, longwall mining is a mechanical version of an established mining system. The equipment for longwall mining consists of four basic units: roof supports, face conveyor, winning or mineral-getting ma¬chine, and stage-loader conveyor. The system mines relatively thin slices of mineral across a predetermined face length in a virtually continuous sequence. As the winning machine cuts, the mineral is loaded automatically onto the face conveyor. In turn, the face conveyor is pushed over into the newly cut track by hydraulic rams attached to the conveyor and the roof supports. The roof supports then are lowered individu¬ally from the roof, advanced to the repositioned con¬veyor, and reset to the roof. At the end of the pass, the longwall cutter is pushed over, and a slice is taken in the opposite direction, so the system repeats itself. Fig. I illustrates a typical longwall mining system. The principle behind the longwall mining system is that the roof is supported only immediately adjacent to the worked seam, keeping the blocks of immediate roof clamped securely from the face to the rear of the sup¬ports. At the rear of the supports, the roof is allowed to fall and break up, with the swell of the broken material eventually establishing an equilibrium in the strata be¬hind the mined area. Fig. 2 illustrates the principle of longwall support. There are two distinct types of longwall mining. The longwall retreating system is the most common in the United States, South Africa, and Australia. The longwall advancing system is the most common in the re¬maining industrialized countries such as Britain, Ger¬many, Poland, and the Soviet Union. The longwall retreating system comprises a mining panel, where the roadways that form the head entry (end at which mineral is delivered from the face con¬veyor to a stage-loader conveyor) and the tail entry are predriven before the longwall units starts production. In the longwall advancing system, the longwall unit makes the head and tail entries as the face advances, utilizing various techniques to prevent the entries from being destroyed as they are left in a consolidating gob area. Fig. 3 illustrates the comparative approaches of the longwall retreating and advancing operations. The East Central Interceptor Sewer, commonly known as the ECIS Project, is the largest public works construction project awarded by the City of Los Angeles. The complexity of this $240 million project, together with the challenge created by the mandated 1,000 calendar days for construction completion, make this project a major interest for the tunneling industry. This paper will describe the ECIS tunnel project, currently under construction by the Joint Venture of Kenny (Sponsor) / Shea / Traylor / Frontier-Kemper. Mining of the18.5 km (about 11 miles) long and 4.7 m (15ft-4in) diameter tunnel is underway with four Tunnel Boring Machines mining at the same time. Details on the mining machines, muck handling systems, innovative construction sequence, together with mining progress will be given.

Falls of roof account for over 50% of the fatalities that occur in coal mines in the US. Thus, roof control is one of the more important phases of underground mining. In reality, the control of roof influences the system of mining and is a major determinant of the width and spacing of working places, operations at the mining face, ventilation control, and surface subsidence. Frequently, the control of roof is the largest single cost item. Roof control is a never-ending task, not only at the working face and throughout sections where men are working, but along haulways and air- ways that must be maintained for the life of the mine. This is because roof, even the best of roof, slowly deteriorates, so it must be frequently examined, with corrective support applied when needed. As coal is excavated, stresses are set up in the roof because the previous equilibrium is upset, resulting in pressures that cause fractures and slight movements that are frequently hard to detect. Unless the immediate roof, in the excavated area, is given support by artificial means, it might fall or there might be a succession of falls, varying from a thin scale to several feet, depending on the nature of the top. Exceptions to this are those rare mines, or sections of mines, with hard, strong, nonweathering roof that requires no support.

In the present study, the use of horse residue as an alternative reducing agent in the roasting of a low-grade goethite ore containing 17.60% Fe was investigated. Additional roasting experiments were carried out with corn starch and without reducing agent for comparison. Each roasted product was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and magnetic hysteresis (MH) loops analyses. The optimum roasting conditions (roasting temperature [400, 500, and 600 °C], reducing agent/ore ratio [0.04, 0.08, and 0.12], and roasting time [10, 20, and 30 min]) were investigated based on the Taguchi approach. The magnetic susceptibilities of the roasted sample with the addition of reducing agents were higher compared to that of the roasted sample in the absence of reducing agent. Experimental findings indicate that the horse residue can be used as the reducing agent. Finally, an iron ore concentrate assaying a Fe grade of 62.12% with a recovery of 56.93% was prepared using wet magnetic separation at a magnetic intensity of 0.5 T from the ore roasted under the following roasting conditions: roasting temperature of 500 °C, reducing agent/ sample ratio of 0.08, and roasting time of 30 min.

The effect of an activator on gold dissolution in clear solution is examined using a rotating disk gold electrode. Steady state polarization curves for anodic dissolution of gold and cathodic reduction of oxygen indicate that the dissolution rate increases in the presence of the activator. The activator enhances gold disso­lution under standard cyanidation conditions; however, optimum activator concentration at the maximum dissolution rate is a function of the cyanide level. In the presence of an activator, the gold dissolution mechanism is controlled by surface kinetics and may be explained by a metal dissolution over-potential model. The dissolution rate with activator is higher than the dissolution rate at a higher cyanide concentration but without activator. The dissolution rate measurements indicate that 3 PPM of activator in a 500 PPM NaCN solution provides a higher dissolution rate than 1000 PPM NaCN alone. Activator technology may be a cost-effective means to reduce cyanide concentration.

This paper presents an assessment of modeling techniques in predicting subsidence over longwall areas. Extensive instrumentation has been made, both at the surface and subsurface, at three longwall mines in northern West Virginia. Ground movements were monitored during a three- year period until subsidence ceased in these areas. A comparative analysis of empirical subsidence prediction techniques including graphical (NCB), profile function, influence functions (USBM, Bals', Knothe's, and zone area) will he presented. A brief geologic and topographic description of each site, along with the instrumentation and monitoring program, will also he presented.

Surface mining in arctic regions is characterized by many unique problems. Continuous and discontinuous permafrost (perennially frozen ground) occurs in most of the arctic and subarctic areas. Permafrost presents special problems of slope stability. Stability of permafrost depends on its temperature, moisture content, and material type. Permafrost slope fails due to solifluction, disturbance of ice-rich slopes, and liquefaction. Drilling and blasting of frozen ground present special problems. Depending on their degree of saturation with water, freezing soils and rocks have a number of important characteristics that affect blasting efficiency. Metals used in mining equipment and mining structures require special selection. At low temperatures, many steels lose most of their normal ductility and toughness (resistance to brittle fracture). This paper discusses engineering solutions to unique problems of arctic mining.

For decades many of us who are associated with the mineral industry have tried to show the public its economic and strategic importance. Some of the mineral industry's proponents have been politically powerful figures and have been widely quoted. Yet, as measured by public opinion, legislative support, or almost any other standard, our efforts have been inadequate. It is apparent that a set of environmental beliefs that discredit industry, firmly held by a number of idealistic persons, has had wider coverage in the media and in schools than has the mineral industry's message. Although the fervor of our idealistic friends is often unfounded and, their stands unscientific, they must be considered seriously. Unless we address the issues in terms the idealists will understand, the mineral industry will have little influence on them or on the general public. A. striking thing is that, quite often, translation of idealists' views into action has been counterproductive. The reason is obvious. Excessive amounts of money and energy have been spent on relatively minor problems. The common result is that larger problems have been created. It may be possible to help anti-industry idealists understand their own dependence on minerals, and thus render their views more realistic, if they are shown more effective ways to reach their stated goals. If those goals can be shown to be held in common by all sensitive human beings -- including those in business and industry - the dialogue becomes one of how to achieve common ends. Individual mining companies acting by themselves have little possibility of success, and companies working in unison through trade associations have not been successful. Further, it is unlikely that industry in general can be successful in changing minds unless it seeks outside help. But friends among those who influence public opinion have been hard to find. Historically, help from media has proven difficult to get. Nor has enough help from educators been forthcoming. Yet, a war is going on in the technological, philosophical, and political trenches, even though much of the public is not aware of it. For the first time in years, there is row a significant and growing number of eloquent and brilliant thinkers on the side of free enterprise and industry, many of them environmentalists, but without the anti-industry mind-set. They have had remarkably little help from the private sector or even from the present administration. Industry may do far more for itself in the long run by encouraging these brave but bruised individuals and their organizations than by trying to work alone. These friends of free enterprise are working against a seemingly stacked deck relative to much of the media, the bureaucracy, and the educational system. However, despite their problems, their success to date has been remarkable. With more cooperation from industry they should do even better.

The unit-train concept of moving raw materials .is considered by many railroad men as the most signifigant contribution to reducing rail freight costs since the introduction of the diesel locomotive. The idea, which involves assigning railroad equipment to only one haul and keeping the equipment rolling results in the maximum utilization of equipment. For example before the unit train was plaged in servige on coal hauled to one of Mid. Continent's customers, about 900 cars and 9 locomotives were needed to move the coal requirements for this plant, compared with. 250 cars and 6 locomotives used by the present scheduling of unit trains. If the economics of unit-train movements are to be achieved, coal companies no longer can use railroad cars as small storage bins on wheels to accumulate their coal in trainload shipments, but, rather, must build large bins which incorporate facilities for the rapid loading of railroad cars in a minimum length of time. In this manner railroad equipment is operated at a high degree of efficiency 'with consequent dollar savings. After negotiations between Mid-Continent, the customers and the Railroad, it was decided a unit train loadout and storage facility at Carbondale was required in order to reduce the delivered price of coal to the customers and thereby contribute to the reduction in the cost of manufacturing steel. Carbondale was selected as the bin site location, because the cost of constructing a railroad to Redstone could not be justified for the tonnages anticipated.

An investigation was undertaken for a ground water discharge plan for the Chino mining complex near Hurley, New Mexico. Operations which impact ground water include dump leaching, storage reservoirs, and tailings seepage. The investigation included both hydrogeological data collection and laboratory analysis. A conceptual understanding of surface water and ground water was then developed. Surface water and ground water models were used to match existing conditions and predict the impact of operational modifications. The study concluded that runoff and resulting leach reservoir overflows were primarily responsible for the ground water degradation. Tailings seepage represents a smaller part of the impact.

The molecular form of aliphatic amines precipitates in alkaline solutions when the amine solubility limit is exceeded and forms a typical colloidal system. The zones of mines precipitation and micellization are defined and it is shown that the appearance of a colloidal system in a certain pH range is a unique feature that makes weak electrolyte type surfactants differ from strong electrolytes. The formation of iono-molecular complexes reported in the literature is shown to be a pre-precipitation phenomenon. The zeta potential - pH curves for minerals and bubbles in the presence of amines in the pH range where the amine forms a colloidal precipitate are entirely determined by the precipitate. The pH dependence of the flotation of certain minerals using amines is discussed in the light of these findings.

It is prudent to interpret atmospheric monitoring signals in real time for checking the safe limits of the air conditions in underground mines. In gassy mines, real-time evaluation increases the safety of operations. In all mines, continuous monitoring and evaluation contributes to maintaining air conditions within healthy and safe limits. Signal interpretation for safety conditions in mines is difficult for many reasons. An increase in hazardous contaminant concentrations can be predicted by signal pattern recognition, root cause analysis of rapid changes toward deterioration, and forward prediction in time using algorithms and numerical models. The paper describes an early warning system for analyzing monitored signal patterns continuously in real time as well as forward predicting the various environmental and working conditions to recognize dangerous trends that may affect safety and health in underground mines. A dynamic, numerical ventilation model with heat and gas contaminant simulation components is used for the analysis of atmospheric data. Methods and test results are discussed with numerical examples for signal propagation prediction. Several mine examples are studied using controlled, synthetic data for malfunction simulations to evaluate time delays between the detection time of suspicious signal trends and the time of dangerous threshold crossing marking an accident scenario. Delay time is found in the order of 20 min in the examples, signifying the useful time period for preventive intervention between EWS warning and the likely breakout of a following accident.

16.1.1-VENTILATION'S ROLE Importance of Ventilation and Environmental Control-Mine ventilation is necessary for the preservation of human life and for the conduct of operations involved in the underground extraction of minerals. It clearly is the most essential of the functions attendant to mining, yet it is auxiliary to the primary objective in mineral extraction. Ventilation in mining thus poses a paradox: ideally, it should be carried out with minimum interference with and cost to production operations, yet it is absolutely vital in providing adequate environmental con¬ditions to support mining. Deterioration of the atmosphere, along with rising ground pressure, imposes the ultimate constraint with depth in underground mining. Ventilation requirements and costs rise rapidly with depth. To preserve atmospheric quality under intense heat conditions, ventilation at great depths must be supplemented by air condition¬ing. Likewise, when mining at any depth under severe or excessive conditions of gas, dust or humidity, supplementary control measures must be employed. In recent years, environmental standards in mines have been raised substantially. While limits are based on human tolerance, increasing concern is being expressed for standards of human comfort. The reasons are economic, as well as humanitarian. Worker performance and longevity correlates closely with environmental quality. Further, adverse accident and insurance compensation rates are a consequence of unsatisfactory environmental conditions. No mining company can afford to be lax in its environmental and ventilation practices. Functions and Processes-Ventilation is the control of air movement, its amount and its direction. As a means of quantity control, it is one of the constituent processes of total air conditioning, the simultaneous control within prescribed limits of the quality, quantity and temperature-humidity of the air. Ventilation is the most common and most. important conditioning process employed in mines for air environmental control. In mine ventilation, air is coursed through the mine workings and openings themselves and, for auxiliary purposes, through vent tubing and ducts. Thus, many interdependencies exist between the mining system and ventilation method. In fact, the two often have evolved ,jointly, as in room-and-pillar extraction of bedded or tabular mineral deposits, such as coal. Ventilation in mines today is provided almost exclusively by large fans, although air flow may result due to natural (thermodynamic) conditions. As mines increase in depth, size and complexity, demands on the ventilation system to maintain more stringent standards of environmental quality likewise rise. On the other hand, never have the technology and resources of the mining industry to cope with environmental problems been so well developed as they are today. In spite of rising costs, it is unlikely that further progress in mine ventila¬tion and air conditioning must await technological breakthroughs. 16.1.2-NATURE OF THE MINE ATMOSPHERE Air Mixtures-Air is a gaseous mixture comprising the natural atmosphere at the surface of the earth. We have heard a lot during the recession about the mining industry now competing in a world market for sales of such commodities as copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, iron ore, and phosphate. If the US mining industry is to survive, do we not have to reduce direct operating costs to a minimum? How significant is labor cost compared to consumables, electricity, fuel, maintenance, materials, and transportation? Ore grade is ultimately the dominant factor; but can we offset its dominance by improving productivity? Is the US mining industry perhaps only 25-30% as productive as it might be? What prevents the industry from being more productive? Can we retrofit older plants to be more productive or does it take a new plant with the largest equipment available for each unit operation? Present Productivity A copper industry study a few years ago covering 13 US copper concentrators ranging from about 10-45 kt/d (11,000-50,000 stpd) showed that productivity did not vary with capacity above 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd). Operating productivity varied significantly, however, from about 180-635 t/d (200-700 stpd) per operating hourly worker in most units, but one operation had 900 kt/d (1,000 stpd). Concentrators with more than 545 t/d (600 stpd) per hourly worker were in the 23 kt/d (25,000 stpd) or more category. Maintenance productivity covered about the same range, but most concentrators were in the 270¬635 t/d (300-700 stpd) per hourly maintenance worker. Again, one company stood well above others by exceeding 1 kt/d (1,100 stpd). Total hourly productivity ranged from 125-280 t/d (140-310 stpd) per hourly worker for most concentrators. The company with the most productive operation, however, was above 455 t/d (500 stpd). Salaried worker productivity for most operations was in the 725 t/d to 1.2 kt/d (800-1,300 stpd) per salaried worker range. The best operation was 2.2 kt/d (2,400 stpd). The end result is, of course, tons per day per total personnel. Most operations fell in the 110-220 t/d (120-240 stpd) range with the best operation at 400 t/d (440 stpd). This is the productivity definition that is most directly related to unit costs. Many of these operations have made some productivity progress

Mine development has evolved in the past 15 years from a human-paced system using hand-held drills and track-bound equipment to a mechanized system using specialized equipment for each component of the development cycle. In most Canadian hard-rock mines, face advance is achieved by the following sequential activities: drilling, explosive loading, mucking and ground support. The state-of-the-art for each work element is reviewed and methods for performance estimates proposed. The entire development system and its production capabilities are considered based on equipment reliabilities, spare units, haulage distances, and muck bay spacing. The effect of the number of working faces on the system's performance will also be analyzed. Manuscript not received in time for publication.

Dramatical increase in the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere has led to the climate change, which poses a significant threat to human life on Earth. CO2 sequestration via mineral carbonation is the one of the most effective method for mitigating global warming, and is the only way that could store CO2 permanently. In recent years, integrating mineral carbonation via ultramafic mine deposit has received significant attention due to its high potentiality towards commercial application. This review compiles the work conducted by various researchers over the last few years on integrated mineral carbonation processes in mining industry, which use the mine waste materials as CO2 feedstock for mineral carbonation. This paper initially introduces the basic theory of mineral carbonation, with a brief description of various techniques that enhance the rate of mineral carbonation. The enhanced mineral carbonation strategies include pre-treatment of feedstock by thermal, chemical and mechanical activation, and carbonation in a direct or indirect carbonation routes under gas/solid phase or aqueous phase. This paper then introduces the scope of application of integrated mineral carbonation. This includes the types of mine suitable for integrated mineral carbonation, the properties of mine waste materials preferable for CO2 sequestration, and the worldwide locations potentially viable for integrated mineral carbonation. Moreover, this paper critically reviews and discusses the integrated mineral carbonation process in mining industry. The integrated mineral carbonation processes include modified passive carbonation techniques at tailing dams, and ex-situ carbonation routes using fresh tailings. The focus of the discussions is the role of reaction condition on the carbonation efficiency of mine waste with various mineralogy, and the drawback of each integrated mineral carbonation process. All the discussions lead to the suggestions on the technology improvement in the integrated mineral carbonation process. Finally, this paper reviews the economical assessments on the existing integrated mineral carbonation process. Literature to date indicates that the value-add by-products (i.e. recovered metals, valuable carbonated products) play an important role in commercialization of an integrated mineral carbonation process.

NIOSH is conducting research to reduce the silica dust exposure of workers at surface coal mines. One goal of this research is to evaluate the relationship between drilling parameters, rock strata and silica dust generation. This study involved measuring blast hole emission dust from a rotary drill rig which required sampling high concentration dust (>400 mg/m3) for silica content in a high velocity airstream. To measure dust initially, traditional sampling methods using personal sampling instruments were attempted in and around the shroud area of the drill with no success. Variations in the dust cloud concentrations under the shroud, the condition of the shroud and its orientation over the hole, and ambient air conditions prevented consistent and accurate dust measurements from being obtained. Amore consistent dust cloud is necessary for accurate measurements. An area of the drill’s dust collector system that consistently draws the emitted airborne dust from the hole is the collector tube. This tube connects the drill collector’s vacuum and dust filtration system to the shroud area. Assuming the collector system is working as designed, sampling from the collector tube would enable more consistent and accurate samples to be taken. However, current personal samplers are unable to sample in the concentrations and velocities experienced in the collector tube, so another method had to be devised. To achieve the desired results, an in-stack cascade cyclone was used. Preliminary field testing shows positive results.
