Beneficiation and physical and chemical processing of non-terrestrial materials borrow strongly from terrestrial experience, but also involve the necessity of handling literally un-Earthly feedstocks, reagents, and environmental conditions. The present state of scientific and engineering understanding of the processing of non-terrestrial minerals, gases and hydrocarbons is reviewed with the production of rocket propellants, life-support fluids, structural metals, and refractories as the goal.

"Metallurgical process development in greenfield projects must define the comminution flowsheet and establish the equipment sizes that are required to deliver the project design criteria. These are critical steps that heavily influence the financial performance of the project, requiring a detailed understanding of the ore properties of the project resources and the best practice methods to size comminution machines. This paper reviews current practices for determining the ore characteristics relevant to comminution circuit design. Particular attention is given to the design of sampling and testing programs, and the methods commonly applied to size crushers and mills for conventional size reduction applications in mineral processing. IntroductionMetallurgical process development in greenfield projects requires the selection of a comminution flow sheet and must establish the equipment sizes required to deliver the project design criteria. This necessitates a detailed understanding of the ore properties that define the project resource. For brownfield projects the same objectives may apply for plant expansions, or the project objective may be simply to define the capacity and operating cost of an existing facility for a new ore source. The process development phase in either instance will typically comprise the following key activities:• Geometallurgical classification and sampling of the ore deposit or deposits.• Determination of comminution energy requirements.• Benchmarking similar projects.• Identification of flow sheet options.• Equipment selection and sizing.This paper is concerned specifically with process development testing and will as such focus on the first two activities on the list: sampling and testing of the deposit. The discussion will focus on testwork programs to support the design of comminution circuits commonly in use in mineral processing today, specifically crusher, tumbling mill and stirred mill technologies.It is important that any testwork program is designed giving consideration to the types of flow sheets that are viable for the project, and the data that will need to be generated to support the final equipment sizing. Designing a testwork program to only provide information about one particular type of flow sheet will not allow sufficient information to be generated for a rigorous trade-off analysis of options, and may therefore preclude financial optimization of the project. Testing programs should be designed to collect sufficient data to ensure that any backtracking at a later stage to fill in missing information is minimal."

Although industrial size reduction methods have an energy efficiency of only about 1 percent, methods of size reduction have not changed much for many years. One reason for slow progress has been the oversimple viewpoint that a single law should exist to relate size reduction to energy input. Modern simulation methods decompose the grinding process into a grinding rate function (selection function) and a breakage function. The breakage function is difficult to measure, and it usually requires tracers if it is determined from milling experiments. Prediction of breakage functions from basic principles is one objective of this paper. In this study we focus attention not on the gross energy input to the experiment, but on the spatial distribution of stress energy within the particle. We are led to this viewpoint by experimental observations of a few previous investigators (Bergstrom2, Rumpf3, Axelson4) and our own observations. Oka and Hiramatsu recently used their calculations of stress within particles for prediction of breakage, but again they tried to correlate the size of the fragments with the total stress energy, rather than the approach we propose. We assume that the stress energy is stored in the interior of the particle as the load is increased, until the particle breaks. We assume that each element of the particle breaks into fragments of a mean size that depends on the locally-stored stress energy. "The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the dosage of sodium hypochlorite as activator on the flotations of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, with a focus on activation-flotation kinetics. Four flotation kinetic models were applied to test data using 1stOpt statistical analysis software to estimate the relationships between the maximum flotation recovery rates for the depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, the flotation rate constants and the sodium hypochlorite dosages. Within the range investigated, the highest flotation performances of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite were obtained at 2.5 mL/L sodium hypochlorite with zinc recovery rate of 93.8 percent and 3 mL/L sodium hypochlorite with copper recovery rate of 94.6 percent, respectively, after four minutes of flotation. A second-order model with rectangular distribution of flotabilities gave the best fit to test data collected at various sodium hypochlorite dosages. For the highest flotation performances of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, the respective equations of their flotation models were derived and presented.IntroductionCyanidation tailings are the solid residues generated by gold plants that use cyanide to extract gold (Lv, Ding and Qian, 2015; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2013). Because of increasing demand for gold, the Chinese gold industry has developed rapidly, with production amounting to 451.799 tons in 2014, an increase of 5.5 percent from 2013. Chinese gold production has been the highest in the world for eight consecutive years. As a result, more than 2.45 million tons of cyanidation tailings are estimated to be discharged into tailings ponds every year (Li et al., 2010; Lv, Ding and Qian et al., 2015; Wang et al., 2015; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2013; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2012), and approximately 300 million tons of cyanide tailings are stockpiled in China, with the potential to cause serious environmental pollution as well as death to wildlife (Adams and Lloyd, 2008; Donato et al., 2007; Hewitt, Breuer and Jeffery, 2012; Velasquez-Lopez et al., 2011; Stephen et al., 2009; Zagury, Oudjehani and Deschenes, 2004). Concerns over cyanidation tailings are not exclusively environmental but also economic, as tailings occupy considerable land area, and tailings storage facilities increase the production costs of gold enterprises (Donato et al., 2007). Tailings often contain other valuable metals such as zinc, lead and copper. For example, the cyanidation tailings of Gaoyao Hetai Gold Plant in Guangdong Province contain 2.5 percent copper (Cu), 0.31 percent lead (Pb), 0.23 percent zinc (Zn) and 15.36 percent iron (Fe) (Shi, 2008), and the tailings of Tianshui Gold Plant in Gansu Province contain 1.94 percent Cu, 5.96 percent Pb, 0.27 percent Zn and 24.62 percent Fe. Cyanidation tailings have therefore been increasingly viewed as a secondary resource rather than waste."

External detonation generated plasmas, highly ionized zones of reacting material ejected from the surface of detonating ex-plosive charges, are shown to be the cause of channel desensitization, i.e., the self-quenching of a detonating explosive column loaded in a borehole with an air annulus between the explosive and the borehole wall. The effects of this phenomenon on several explosive compositions and types are demonstrated and discussed. Explosives tested include aluminum sensitized and explosive sensitized slurries, ANFO, liquid explosives and dynamites. Various techniques are described that can be used to reduce or eliminate the plasma effect.

The current paper looks at evaluating the merits of large geared mills versus gearless driven mills by evaluating the following factors: The capability of currently available systems in terms of power and mill diameter Efficiency in terms of overall electrical power consumed vs mechanical output power Capital cost Running costs Cooling requirements in terms of air versus water cooling Installation and delivery time World?s largest geared drive ? 2x8500kW ? Wushan, China (operating) Among the many reasons that geared drives on large SAG mills are not favoured, is due to not having an efficient variable speed drive option (60 to 80% critical speed), which is required for process reasons. As technological advances have occurred quite rapidly in recent years, this paper uses the latest data in applying these comparisons and attempts to dispel some of the myths regarding Slip Energy Recovery (SER) and variable frequency drive technology on twin pinion drive systems. Early attempts to provide load sharing on twin pinion drives used primitive electronics which have since been developed to eliminate the problems encountered in earlier attempts. In particular, torque pulsations between the twin motors have been overcome using a higher number of devices (pulses) and better electronics. With successful operation of 2 x 6.5MW (Phu Kham, Laos) and three 2 x 7MW units under manufacture (Pascu Lama) and a further 40 projects worldwide, energy efficient Hyper Synchronous SER drives are now mature and ready for use on 2 X 10MW dual drive mills. Speed variation required is in the range of +/- 15% of synchronous motor speeds. VVVF drive packages from ABB and Siemens are also available for 2 x 10MW in low and high speed options. Dual hydraulic inching drives provide a much safer and convenient operation with the added advantage of locked charge detection.

The Rondout Bypass Tunnel in New York has two access shafts. The upper sections of the shafts are lined with steel pipe to resist a substantial net internal water head . Initial design included a ¾-inch-thick cement mortar lining (CML) for all three components. Because of concerns with CML application on large-diameter pipes, the protective lining was redesigned for shotcrete application. This paper discusses the details of that design, mock-ups, and shotcrete application.

Completion of the Hall Street Coal Transfer Terminal in St. Louis marks the beginning of a major shift in the movement of coal to the power generating stations of the Midwest and South Central regions of the United States. The location of the terminal is significant. The 10 million ton- per-year facility is the first high capacity rail-to-barge transfer terminal to be built on the western shore of the Mississippi. This terminal and others to follow will link the massive coal fields of the West with the high coal consuming markets adjacent to the 25,000-mile Inland Waterway System.

Common methods of controlling gob gas in U.S. nines are by means of ventilation of gob areas and gas drainage through surf ace boreholes. Costs of drilling surface gob holes increase as deeper coalbeds are mined. Where gob holes cannot be drilled because of topography, ventilation is the only means of control. Even then, sufficient air may not be available to dilute methane in the bleeder entries to acceptable levels. Thus, new methods of gob gas control need to be developed that are independent of surface topography, and of the mine ventilation system, and less costly than present systems. Except for slight variations in procedures and equipment, Great Britain, West Germany, France, Belguim, Poland, and Czechoslovakia use a common methane control method that is different from the system generally used in the United States, This Bureau of Mines paper reviews European mining methods, mining conditions, and methane control technology and discusses their applicability to U.S. mines.

Since 1980 a number of significant changes have been introduced at Palabora in an effort to off-set the effects of reduced product price and increased unit cost of inputs. These changes and improvements include major equipment rationalization programs, the introduction of trolley assisted truck haulage, adoption of a sophisticated computerized truck control system, pit design enhancements, improved drilling practices, use of emulsion explosives and the installation of an in-pit crushing and conveying system. The various changes, their effect on the operation and their contribution to cost reduction and improved productivity at Palabora are considered.

This paper describes the grinding circuits installed at two remote sites in northern Canada. One is Cominco's Polaris Project at Little Cornwallis Island; a barge-mounted lead/zinc concentrator. The other is Echo Bay Mines' Lupin Project at Contwoyto Lake, 400 km northeast of Yellowknife, a gold mine, all components of which had to be flown to the site. Logistics and considerations of operating and maintenance presented challenges which were met by innovative design. The evolution of the grinding circuits is discussed. Both plants are operating at design throughput.

The McKinley Mine is a large strip operation sup-plying coal to several utility and industrial customers. The mine reserve comprises many coal seams of varying quality and thickness. Erosion of the terrain has created coal out-crop lines that are encountered frequently with associated deviations in quality. Due to the complex nature of the coal reserve and the various customer quality requirements, coal quality control is a primary consideration and a constant challenge at the McKinley Mine. This paper will discuss the practices employed to ensure that the available coal meets contract specifications.

1974 marked the start of a new era for Climax Molybdenum Co., a division of AMAX, with the initiation of an open pit operation above the existing successful underground block panel caving mine. A number of problems posed a challenge to the Climax open pit. Highly fractured rock, old mine workings, permafrost, and more than 7.6 m/a (300") of snowfall forced changes in normal operations. Final pit wall design was altered. Production bench heights were lessened due to old workings. These and other modifications contribute to a highly successful open pit operation.

The environmental liabilities of coal waste disposal sites can have a major impact on a mining project's economic viability. Developing a waste disposal site is no longer simply an exercise in completing paperwork to obtain a permit, with the proliferation of environmental regulations in recent years, managing disposal sites now requires design creativity, short term and long term planning and detailed monitoring to maximize the benefits to the mining company. Operating costs and future capital costs for expansion of existing sites, new site development and regulatory compliance should be reviewed periodically and considered in the overall management plan. This paper discusses various management methods that are being employed in the industry to improve waste disposal operations both environmentally and profitably.

The construction and erection of the Coleraine concentrating plant was commenced in April, 1909, and was completed (with the machinery installed) ready for use in 1910. Attached to the main building is 'a table house large enough to accommodate con¬centrating tables for five units and space for a small machine shop and supply store. For the handling of the' railroad cars in the upper portion of the mill there is provided on the north side of the main structure a trestle approach 650 feet long, and on the south or opposite side a tail track 300 feet long. The latter is so constructed as to permit its being incorporated directly in a possible future extension of the plant. The building, viaduct approach and tail, trestle, as well as the table house, are con¬structed of steel, the total amount used being 6,100 tons. The building is covered by corrugated' steel sheeting over 2 x 6-inch wood sheathing fastened directly to the structural steel. The north end of the trestle approach is connected with the main road-beds forming the track system for delivery of the crude ore to the plant over an embankment of a maximum height of 110 feet containing over 2,000,000 cubic yards of dirt.

For several generations now, the high alumina clayey sediments of Southeastern Alabama and Southwestern Georgia have supplied those regions with steady, mineral-based income although the impact of that income has been relatively minor until recently. Since World War II, mining activity has increased algebraically with over half of the total ore value in the Alabama area having been recovered since that time. The Georgia area production increases are even more dramatic. The trends are continuing and the next decade should see ore winning figures which will dwarf all previous production. It's time for the mining engineers to take note of this development as the mining methods, similar to the production, have developed rapidly and now offer challenges for the most competent professional. The development of mining techniques has followed a classic pattern. Beginning almost a hundred years or so ago, with the loading of weather-resistant surface boulders into mule-drawn wagons, mining methods have progressed to discovery of limited surface exposures in outcrop and eventually to stripping and development of non-obvious, subsurface deposits. Little by little, the overburden thickness of new pits has increased until, at present, pits with 100' -125' of overburden are being actively worked. Ground water problems in the Eufaula District are particularly challenging. At A. P. Green's J. W. Baker Pit, #l, in Barbour Co., Alabama, it is necessary to continually pump groundwater at the rate of about 400 gallons per minute from wells on the periphery of this large pit in order to keep the water table low enough to allow mining of the ore body.

This paper presents the results of an analysis and summary of relevant literature on the mechanism of cementation of metals in acidic aqueous media, with the aim of reconsidering the conventional assumptions. The simplicity of the process as a mere galvanic metal displacement is discussed, and the real effects of pH and hydrogen pressure in different cases assessed. Finally, an alternative mechanism scheme with respect to the role of hydrogen species, in agreement with reported data, is proposed.

Reviewing events in the minerals industry, in economic geology, and in my own exploration work, I find that the most compelling subject for comment is the increasing ferment in ore deposits theory. New discoveries and continued investigations of bedded deposits of lead and zinc, copper, iron, uranium, etc., coupled with the availability of much new and significant data from sedimentary and metamorphic petrology, geochemistry, and oceanography, has led many economic geologists like myself to become disenchanted with former simplistic notions. Now disenchantment among serious people should presuppose both valid objections to the old, and valid new substitutes. I can sum up my own position and, I believe, what most of the recent writers on ore deposits theory are trying to tell us, by saying that a physico-chemical (bench science) approach to a natural science is neither correct nor useful, and that the obvious cure is a return to the study of the geology of ore deposits. More specifically, ore should be viewed merely as an unusual concentration produced, in stages, by the natural processes inherent in the geochemical cycle. In criticizing the conceptual basis of a science, one is involved simultaneously in the inherent character of the science, its subject matter, and the old and new concepts. I have found it impossible to make a clean separation along those lines. As a result, and as the title suggests, these are not-quite-random reflections on genesis, a matter near and dear to all true treasure hunters since Agricola.

The earliest recorded history in the use of belt conveyors in the United States is in O. Evans' "Miller's Guide" published in Philadelphia in 1795. Evans defines a conveyor as a "broad endless strap of thin pliant leather or canvas revolving over two pulleys in a case or trough." (Ref. 1) In this definition, pulleys are being used in a bulk material belt conveyor application. Pulleys used in belt drives can trace their origin back to 1200 A.D. In fact, Engineers had considerable experience designing them into drives transmitting greater horsepower than those used in the early belt conveyors. In belt conveyor application, a pulley's purpose is primarily three-fold, 1) support the belt in directional changes, as designed in the conveyor, 2) transmit driving power to the belt, and 3) guide or train the belt. There are various types of pulleys used in belt conveyor systems and these are thoroughly covered in "Belt Conveyors For Bulk Materials" prepared by CEMA, 1966. For our discussion, however, the most common used in belt conveyors are drive pulleys, snub pulleys, head pulleys, tail pulleys, takeup pulleys and bend pulleys. The drive pulley imparts the driving force to the belt and may be located at the head or discharge end of the conveyor, in return strand, or at the tailor loading end of the conveyor.
