Using a mine roof simulator press capable of duplicating the expected magnitude of vertical and horizontal forces experienced by underground mine roof supports, load capabilities of some roof support cribbings were measured. Comparative ultimate vertical support strengths are reported for cribs of old and new timber and nonreinforced and steel-fiber-reinforced (SFR) concrete blocks. In terms of load- bearing capability, cribs of new hickory and nonreinforced concrete blocks have about equal strength, and SFR concrete blocks are three times as strong. Wood aged 2 years underground lost 43 pct of its support strength. These data were obtained during the course of the initial familiarization exercise of the complex press.

There are compelling reasons for us to look to our Country's Western coal. Despite its inherent low BTU content, Western coal's low sulphur content provides a near-ideal answer to satisfy our in- dependent goals of clean air and self-sufficiency in energy. Vast reserves, thick seams and amenability to low-cost strip mining serve as a powerful economic basis for its viability as a primary and dependable source of energy for the coming decades. A major consideration, the solution of which may not be quite obvious, is transportation cost. These abundant deposits are remote from the utilities of the heavily populated eastern regions of the United States (Figure 1). A Western coal mine in Montana is likely 1500 miles or more from an eastern power plant. The comparable distance to an eastern coal mine may be only 200 miles. Thus, the question is: How can the haulage cost of our Western coal be substantially reduced to an acceptable level? If resolved, western reserves of coal will be one of the key solutions to satisfying our Nation's energy needs.

It is a matter of importance to use the lower alkyl monoethers of propylene glycol (polyPGME) as a frother in sulfide mineral flotation, for their compounds are highly soluble in water and are surface active frothers to some extent. The purpose of this study is to clarify fundamental roles of frothers in sulfide mineral flotation by investigating the effects of polyPGME on the floatability of galena with xanthate and adsorption property those ethers at the liquid/air interface. Fundamental investigation on the flotation of sulfide minerals using o,o-dialkyl dithiophosphates has been carried out through galena floatability tests in the following two cases:(l)single use of dithiophosphate for sulfide mineral collection and (2) joint use of dithiophosphates for its collection.

Commercial computer "time-sharing" is a new and powerful tool for the engineer. It is a system of virtually simultaneous use of a digital computer by several individuals. Access to the computer is by means of a conventional teletypewriter which transmits over the regular telephone lines to the computer which may be located any distance from the user. Complex or repetitive computations can be programmed and the speed of computation is many times that which one can do with slide rule and desk calculator. The availability of such a commercial computer "time-sharing" system offered an opportunity to transform a tedious and time-consuming task into one that requires only a few minutes. Until the work of F. C. Bond produced widely accepted mathematical statements concerning the performance of grinding mills, the selection of the proper size equipment was done by comparison with similar operating equipment. Allis-Chalmers systematized Bond's work in a bulletin published in 1963 but the calculations are laborious and the final mill selection still required comparison of the calculated power draw with the power requirements listed in equipment catalogs. This was, however, a step forward from previous procedures. This paper discusses a rapid and simple method of determining the size and power requirement of overflow ball mills. A shared-time computer program has been developed which rapidly calculates and displays the physical dimensions, power requirements, grinding media size and quantity, as well as the important correction factors used. All of these data are calculated from input information which is usually available.

Coal is America's most abundant energy resource. Therefore, it IS logical to assume that coal must be produced in much greater quantifies in order to make the United States self-sufficient, as far as energy is concerned by 1985. However, there are a number of obstacles which have to be overcome in order to achieve such a great task. According to one of the most outspoken American Mining men, there are three major obstacles. Those are: (1 ) Mining technology (2) Public image of the coal mining industry (3) Governmental policy toward the mining industry The following will be dealing with Shortwall Mining, which is a very specific part of mining technology and which might influence the image of the coal mining industry as well as the governmental guidelines, at least to make it easier to live with those guidelines. During recent years the operation of coal mines has been more expensive than ever. Since 1970, the cost of producing coal increased by 30% and the productivity dropped by just about the same amount. Those are alarming signs.

This study seeks to define the mechanism of oxyanion sorption onto surfactant-modified zeolites. Zeolites which have been treated with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA) surfactant to produce a hydrophobic surface are capable of sorbing both organic compounds as well as oxyanions such as chromate, selenate, and sulfate. Simple ion exchange and charge-balancing mechanisms do not fully explain this unusual phenomenon. The sorption of HDTMA surfactant appears to be partly ion exchange and partly sorption to non-ion-exchangeable sites. Sorption of chromate is a simple exchange mechanism with bromide, which co-adsorbs with HDTMA to form a surface precipitate. Information from this study will be used to design on-site and in situ treatment systems for contaminated water, such as filter beds and permeable barriers.

A process for the conversion of stibnite (Sb2Sj) concentrates, crude antimony oxide, or metal to a pure cubic antimonous oxide (senarmontite) has been developed on a laboratory scale. The conversion of stibnite to senarmontite has been piloted. The high purity of the final product is the result of forming antimony trichloride as a low temperature distillable intermediate. To obtain the antimony trichloride the stibnite, or crude oxide is slurried in molten antimony trichloride and reacted with gaseous hydrogen chloride. Antimony metal is oxidized to the trichloride with chlorine. The hydrogen sulfide produced from the hydro- chlorination of stibnite can be upgraded to a strength of 95% or greater for further treatment. The crude antimony trichloride is separated from the gangue by a preliminary evaporation and then is fractionally distilled and the trichloride distillate has less than 50ppm of arsenic and lead combined (the most troublesome impurities in antimony processing). The purified antimony trichloride is then hydrolyzed with sodium or ammonium hydroxide to produce the cubic form of antimonous oxide (senarmontite) to the exclusion of the rhombic form (valentinite) which is photosensitive. The advantage of this process is the ability to treat a wide range of antimony ores, concentrates, and metal to yield a high purity oxide in a controllable range of particle sizes.

Once you get past the name, you see that there is nothing behind Oz’s curtain other than a couple of contractors bidding and building work in an attempt to make a profit. So take a few minutes to read the rest of this, and I’ll do my best to dispel a few mythWhat is a joint venture?In some form or fashion, joint ventures are as old as industry itself. In the United States, some of the earliest (and largest) joint ventures involved the railroads and oil companies in the late 1800s. In the United States’ underground construction industry, joint venture names such as, Healy-Greenfield, Green and Winston, Gates & Fox and Walsh, Shea-Ball, Kenny-Paschen and S&M-Traylor bring back memories of successful joint ventures that operated over many projects.There are nearly as many definitions for joint ventures (JVs) as there are attorneys. A short and simple definition is, "an association of two or more companies engaged in a singular, for-profit business enterprise without actual partnership or incorporation." That’s it. Two or more contractors decide to partner up for one or more projects. One benefit of the JV relationship is that the partners typically do not need to file incorporation documents, or articles of organization within the state where they intend to operate. So it is a relatively easy business arrangement to pull together. The problem of assessing uncertainty in grade estimates has been a topic of research and debate since kriging was first introduced. Use of the kriging variance was originally touted as all that was necessary in order to produce confidence limits for grade estimates. Since then the prudence of using the kriging variance for confidence interval estimation has been questioned, and techniques such as the jackknife and conditional simulation have been proposed to develop "true" interval estimates. This paper compares the differences between interval estimates produced by the three methods and makes conclusions about the performance of confidence intervals produced by the different methods.

The White Pine Mine is situated in Ontonagon County, approximately six miles south of Lake Superior, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (Figs. 1 and 2). The ore body mined by White Pine Copper Company occurs in the lower - most 20 to 25 feet of the Nonesuch formation, a series of middle - to upper Keweenawan shales, siltstones, and sandstones. This paper elaborates on the solution of problems in ore grade control and mine planning arising from the presence of an essentially barren sandstone stratum within the ore body.

Air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) flotation is one of the new promising technologies. Numerous applications have been successfully tested since its conception; nevertheless, research and development efforts have continued to provide for further improvements with respect to operating conditions and design considerations. Results from experimental studies on bubbles generation in the ASH system are presented in this paper. Bubble size distributions generated during ASH operation have been determined using a high-speed photographic technique. The influence of many factors including surfactant concentration, water flowrate, and porous tube pore size has been studied. Test results indicate that these process variables have a profound effect on the bubble size distribution. With an increase in surfactant concentration or water flowrate (shear field) the bubble size distributions become narrower and shift toward smaller average bubble diameters. However, the influence of pore size is more complicated. Depending on the experimental conditions the average bubble size was found to range from about 100 to 300 microns in diameter.

The Jamaica Mining Legislation requires the bauxite companies operating in the island to reclaim all mined-out lands (except those legitimately excluded) to the level of agricultural or pastoral productivity, which existed prior to the commencement of mining. If it is not possible to reclaim a mined-out area the companies are required to reclaim an equivalent area of some other land which had not previously been used for agricultural purposes, or alternatively, pay to the government the sum of $120 (US) for every acre of land mined in the particular sector. In the seventeen years since the programme commenced the companies have in general chosen to reclaim most of the mined-out lands, rather than the cheaper alternative. However, the ultimate success of the programme will depend not only on actual reclamation per se but moreso the productivity of the rehabilitated lands. There are a number of reasons why the accent has to be placed on productivity of the lands. The first is that Jamaica is a small country (4,450 square miles) with a population of nearly 2 million people. Because of its mountainous terrain it is estimated that only 35% of the land area is cultivable in crops and pastures; hence this limited area, as well as that which can be reclaimed, must be made highly productive in order to support local and export demands. The Mining companies own over 200,000 acres of land, and of this acreage, it is conservatively estimated that about 75,000 will be affected by mining and will be reclaimed. As such, the use of the land after mining can have an important bearing on Jamaica's future agricultural productivity. Meramec Mining Company, a joint venture by Bethlehem Steel Corporation and St. Joe Minerals Corporation, is engaged in the mining, concentrating, and pelletizing of iron ore from the Pea Ridge Mine located near Sullivan, Missouri, about 70 miles southwest of St. Louis. The orebody was delineated in the mid-1950's by St. Joe during an exploration program to discover new lead orebodies. An airborne magnetometer survey which was run by the U. S. Geological Survey, the Missouri Geological Survey, and several min¬ing companies was published in 1950 and showed an anomaly in the Pea Ridge area. Test holes drilled in 1953 and 1954 revealed the presence of a large orebody of probable commercial significance; additional drilling in 1956 and 1957 provided confirmation of this. Meramec Mining Company was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began in the latter part of that year. The Pea Ridge orebody lies under about 1300 feet of sediments. It is tabular, about 2600 feet long and up to 600 feet thick, and lies in an approximate east-west delineation. The orebody dips about 800S and is of unknown depth. The ore is primarily high grade magnetite with smaller zones of specular hematite, The Pre-cambrian wall rock is rhyolite porphyry. According to the model of product life cycles, the global coal mining industry is in the stagnation phase. The coal demand of the main consumer, China, has peaked in 2013 and is slowly declining. The Norwegian sovereign wealth fund, the world´s largest, has excluded coal-related companies for ethical reasons. Important players like the UN or the EU have already begun to describe pathways towards de-carbonization. Increasing competition between coal mining companies and the mining regions can be expected worldwide if companies want to keep their positions on the global and national coal markets. Companies will focus on the best deposits. European countries like France, Spain or Germany are only forerunners of this development - their centuries of coal production have been finished. The concept of Sustainable Development (SD) is fundamentally based on a model of progress where ecological, economic and social dimensions should be developed equally and positively. But without the idea of competition, the concept of SD is incomplete. Questions arise, such as: How can SD be realized on stagnating or declining markets without guarantees for companies “to live forever”? How can SD be a corporate goal in a phase of decline? How can declining mining regions sustainably progress into a better future? The German hard coal mining industry´s lifecycle has ended in 2018 after 60 years of stagnation and decline. As of 2019, all hard coal consumed in Germany will be imported, especially from Colombia, Russia and South Africa. What has been done in Germany to handle the coal decline in a sustainable way and the lessons learned from this process is described in this paper. It may be useful for mining regions who will face a similar future sooner or later. INTRODUCTION Principally, mining natural resources is a finite business that reaches its limits once the deposits mined are depleted, the resources can no longer be mined in an economically profitable way, or substitutes are pushing the mined products out of the market. An example for the latter is the increasing replacement of coal with natural gas and renewables in power generation in the USA. (Kok 2017) According to the model of the product lifecycle, the global mining hard coal mining industry has reached the stagnation phase. (Kretschmann 2000) Although the coal mining business is more a multi-regional than a global business the trend is obvious. The peak of coal use is behind us, especially because the coal demand of China is slowly decreasing since 2013. (Shell 2018) China´s government has announced investing $360 billion in renewable energy by 2020 and scrap plans to build 85 coal-fired power plants. In March 2018, Chinese authorities reported that the country was already exceeding official targets for energy efficiency, carbon intensity, and the share of clean energy sources. China’s energy regulator, the National Energy Administration, rolled out new measures to reduce the country’s dependence on coal. (Kejun and Woetzel 2017) Coal consumption in the US is facing a 16 % decline in five years from 800 to 670 million short tons between 2015 and 2019 and - according to the EIA – will not rise again. (EIA 2018) The decline is attributed to complex market dynamics from low gas prices because of the “shale gas revolution” (Kok 2017, p. 3) to federal environmental regulation like the Clean Power Plan. The United Nations´ UNEP Finance Initiative is cooperating with the Portfolio Decarbonization Coalition of institutional investors to implement decarbonization strategies across their portfolio. Amongst these investors is the New York State Common Retirement Fund, the third largest public pension plan in the USA. (UNEP 2017) The European Union has already begun to de-scribe pathways to decarbonization. I have been asked to discuss the "Development of the Twin Buttes Mine for Production." This property, which is a large low-grade open pit copper mine about 25 miles south of Tucson, Arizona, was recently brought into production by The Anaconda Company under a long-term lease agreement with the Banner Mining Company. Since the scope of this paper is limited to the subject broadly indicated by its title I will confine discussion of historical, environmental and other general matters to a brief summary sufficient, I hope, to establish a background of those conditions which influenced our approach to the technical and economic problems that faced us at Twin Buttes. The paper deals primarily with our studies and activities related to the solution of these problems and with the resulting engineering and business decisions that were taken - decisions which culminated last September in the initial commercial operation of another major open pit copper producer unique and interesting in several respects.

The northern zone of the Indus Basin comprises a vast area of essentially level land in West Pakistan which is irrigated by means of a complex system of canals that distribute more water to more land than any other irrigation system in the world. In spite of the development of this extensive irrigation system, production of food and fiber has not met the requirements of the country. The major reasons that crop production has not reached anticipated levels are the lack of adequate irrigation supplies and effective subsurface drainage. As a result, yields per acre are among the lowest in the world for areas where irrigation is practiced, and many thousands of acres of valuable crop land have been removed from production or are seriously affected by salinity and waterlogging. To rectify the problems of irrigation supply and drainage the Government of Pakistan has undertaken a program of Salinity Control and Reclamation which is being administered by the Water and Power Development Authority. The Authority retained Tipton and Kalmbach, Inc. , of Denver,, Colorado as Engineers for the program in the northern zone of the Indus Basin. -This program consists of the construction of about 30, 000 irrigation wells to provide drainage for waterlogged lands and full irrigation supplies, including leaching requirements, for; all cultivated lands. The program will ultimately ensure the productivity of 20 million acres and will involve an annual pumpage from ground water storage of nearly 40 million acre-feet of water. The value of the crops produced when the program is in full operation will be 4 to 6 times the value of the crops that could be produced without the benefits of this program.

"It is well known that froth visual features reflect the operating conditions of the flotation process, so that being able to accurately obtain the froth properties is the most significant criteria to optimize and control this process. Froth segmentation is a useful procedure that can determine the bubble size distribution. Several algorithms have been proposed in this field, but marker-based watershed transform shows the best performance. In spite of this fact, the algorithm suffers from oversegmentation in cases when the flotation froth includes large bubbles along with small ones. In the paper, the marker-based watershed method is modified to prevent oversegmentation of large bubbles. The developed algorithm is validated using some froth images captured at different operating conditions, so the results indicate that the method can segment the mixture of big and small bubbles effectively.IntroductionFroth flotation is a widely used process for separating valuable from gangue minerals. Effective control of flotation circuits has a dramatic effect on overall performance of a mineral processing plant. In most flotation plants, process operators monitor the froth surface visually and make adjustments to process parameters based on their interpretation of the surface appearance and their idea of the appearance of an ideal froth. However, due to natural complexity of the flotation process, achieving optimal control is often not possible for human operators.In recent years, attempts have been made to control the flotation circuits using machine vision systems (Moolman et al., 1995; 1996a,b; Bartolacci et al., 2006; Kaartinen et al., 2006; Vanegas and Holtham, 2008; Aldrich et al., 2010). The froth bubble size distribution is the most significant control variable that reflects the operating conditions in a flotation machine. To date, a number of approaches have been proposed for bubble size measurement from froth images, including segmentation (Sadr-kazemi and Cilliers, 1997; Wang et al., 2003; Mehrshad and Massinaei, 2011), texture spectrum (Nguyen and Thornton, 1995), wavelet (Liu et al., 2005), an improved texture spectrum approach, a method based on binary images (Lin et al., 2008) and, finally, using interfacial morphological information (Yang et al., 2009)."

Flotation collectors play a crucial role in mineral flotation by selectively adhering to mineral surfaces and aiding in their separation from gangue material. They are heteropolar molecules, as defined by Sutherland and Wark (1955), featuring non-polar hydrocarbon chains and polar groups interacting with mineral surfaces to induce hydrophobicity selectively. The importance of collectors in mineral processing, as underscored by Lotter and Bradshaw (2010), lies in their ability to enhance recovery rates and improve selectivity, thereby optimizing the extraction of valuable minerals from complex ores. Collectors are classified based on their mechanism of action, as proposed by Laskowski (2010). This classification categorizes collectors into three groups: water-soluble compounds, water-insoluble “oily” collectors, and water-insoluble amphipathic compounds forming molecular films at the water/gas interface. This complements the chemical structure-based classification by Sutherland and Wark (1955) and Suoninen and Laajalehto (1993), offering a comprehensive understanding of collector diversity in flotation systems. Collector selection is an iterative process crucial for optimizing mineral processing efficiency, as emphasized by Lotter and Bradshaw (2010). Understanding the significance of collector mixing or synergy outcomes is paramount for enhancing mineral flotation efficiency and sustainability. Taguta, O’Connor, and McFadzean (2018) demonstrate that mixed collector systems enhance interaction enthalpies and microflotation recoveries, indicating improved performance. McFadzean, Castelyn, and O’Connor (2012), along with Critchley and Riaz (1991), delve into investigating synergistic interactions between collectors, offering insights for strategic selection. Observations from the study of collector synergy, as noted by Wakamatsu et al. (1980), reveal nuanced relationships surpassing individual collector behaviors. The methodology outlined in this paper provides valuable guidance for classifying and selecting collectors based on specific application needs, while also suggesting the potential for synergistically improving recovery across fine, intermediate, and coarse particles.

Controlling long overland conveyors with multiple drive stations is a complex problem. The methods for controlling these belts in a steady state are well-covered in existing literature, but a discussion of starting and stopping strategies is absent. This paper outlines different control strategies for starting, stopping and running conveyors with multiple drive stations. To illustrate the benefits of applying the methods described in this paper, the authors show how their adoption corrected many of the control system problems at Essroc Cement’s overland conveyor, which features three drive stations separated from each other by long lengths of continuous conveyor belt.
