The PMott MacDonaldlane Train Tunnel West Extension (PTTWE) Project at HartsfieldJackson Atlanta International Airport includes the extension of the existing automated people mover system and terminal renovations at the baggage claim station. To assist with design, pricing, and assessment of risk on this progressive design-build project, 3D design models were prepared to increase visibility into realities of construction. This paper will focus on the original intent of the models and explore the additional, unforeseen value they provided throughout the design and construction process.

The pandemic emergency is forcing transit agencies to define strategies allowing social distancing, which are more challenging in underground interchange stations in crowded downtown cores. Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC’s) Bloor-Yonge Station Capacity Improvement Project in Toronto was approved to meet increasing demand and represents an opportunity to fight COVID-19. This paper discusses cost-effective solutions in expanding the cut-and-cover station box over the existing Toronto Subway Line 2 and connecting it through ventilation openings in the cast-iron tunnel liner. Potential uplift risks and structural damage due to minimal vertical clearance were analyzed via three-dimensional finite element analyses with advanced constitutive laws to simulate the multi-stage construction process. Based on the simulation results, a series of countermeasures, including excavation support systems, king posts, ground-consolidations, and liner reinforcements were integrated into comprehensive design options to ensure the serviceability and structural integrity of the subway tunnels.

Twin 8.5 m diameter, 10 km long headrace tunnels under overburdens of up to 1870 m were excavated for the neelum jhelum hydroelectric project in north-eastern pakistan using two main beam gripper tunnel boring machines (tbms). Rock bursts were encountered and presented a significant danger to personnel and equipment. Micro seismic monitoring was installed to analyze rock burst characteristics and to create a database for future reference. Correlation of rock burst characteristics improved the ability to predict the likelihood, location, severity, and number of rock burst events. This study was developed as part of an effort by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to better understand rock-mass behavior in longwall coal mines in highly stressed, bump-prone ground. The floor-heave and nofloor- heave phenomena at a western US coal mine could not be properly simulated in numerical models using conventional shear-dominant failure criteria (i.e., Mohr–Coulomb or Hoek–Brown failure criterion). The previous numerical study demonstrated these phenomena using a user-defined model of the s-shaped brittle failure criterion in conjunction with a spalling process in the FLAC3D numerical modeling software. The results of the FLAC3D modeling agreed with the observations of the relative amounts of heave from each gate-road system. However, the FLAC3D model adopted many assumptions and simplifications that were not very realistic from a physical or mechanical perspective. To overcome the limitations of the FLAC3D model, 3DEC modeling in conjunction with the discrete fracture network (DFN) technique was performed to better understand the true behavior of floor heave associated with underground mining in an anisotropic stress field. The effect of stress rotation in the mining-induced stress field was considered by using a different geometry of rock fractures in the coal seam. The heterogeneity of the engineering properties (i.e., cohesion and tensile strength) were also considered by using Monte Carlo simulations. Consequently, the 3DEC models using the DFN technique resulted in predictions of floor heave that agreed with observations of the relative amounts of heave from each gate-road system, but the cause of heave was mainly related to the degree of anisotropy instead of the size of the pillar.

Construction of Shaft 17B-1, a part of The New York City water supply system, required an excavation of approximately 38 m (123 ft) through water-bearing overburden soil and more than 152 m (500 ft) of gneiss bedrock to make a connection to Water Tunnel No. 3. Ground freezing was the specified method to provide temporary earth support and ground water control for the overburden material. The ground freezing process relied on a supplemental geotechnical investigation and comprehensive laboratory testing of the frozen soil to evaluate the potential long-term creep behavior of the soil and the elimination of a temporary lining system. This paper describes that process as well as the drilling and installation methods of the ground freezing system. Additionally, the methodical system of excavation and insulation is discussed that permitted a safe and timely excavation followed by the installation of the permanent concrete liner.

California’s San Diego County Water Authority provides a safe and reliable water supply to more than 3.3 million residents through twenty-four member agencies. The 2nd Aqueduct pipelines, a critical infrastructure consisting of three large-diameter pipelines, are susceptible to natural threats including streambed erosion, channel migration, and seismic hazards within the 3,840-foot-long Moosa Canyon segment of the alignment. A state-of-good repair, hazard mitigation, and resiliency project is progressing to ensure uninterrupted water supply. For each pipeline, a segment will be replaced by tunneling. A high-level project development approach is presented, focusing on alternative selection, environmental and geotechnical considerations, and operations and maintenance constraints.

Narragansett Bay Commission’s (NBC) Pawtucket Tunnel Project includes construction of the 11,600-ft long, 30-ft ID, deep rock tunnel. This paper presents insight into the features and benefits of lump-sum, design-build that led NBC to select it as the project delivery method. The use of a design-build contracting process that included proprietary meetings to discuss and obtain feedback on Alternative Technical Concepts as well as to facilitate reaching consensus on modifications to the GBR-B is also described. The discussion includes features and benefits of design-build process that not only addressed NBC’s desired outcomes, but also allowed the Design-Builder to propose several innovative changes to the Base Technical Concepts included in the bid documents, and to develop a GBR-C that was compatible with their proposed means and methods of construction and addressed what they believed to be the more significant subsurface risks on the project.

Underground mine fires are a threat to the safety and health of mine workers. The timely determination of the location and size of an underground fire is of great importance in developing firefighting strategies and reducing the risk of any injuries. Machine learning was used in this paper to develop a predictive model for fire location and fire size in an underground mine. The ventilation data were obtained by simulating different mine fire scenarios with MFire. The ventilation data of all airways were used as features to predict the fire location. Based on the feature importance, five airways were selected to monitor, and the airflow data of the selected airways were used to predict the fire location and fire size. An accuracy score of 0.920 was obtained for the prediction of fire location. In addition, in-depth analyses were conducted to characterize the wrong predictions with the purpose of improving the performance of the random forest model. The results show that the occurrence of fire at closely connected airways at some locations can generate misleading ventilation data for each other and the model performance can be further improved by grouping them. Fire size is another factor affecting the model performance and the model accuracy increases with increasing fire size. The result from this study can help mine safety personnel make informed decisions during a mine fire emergency.

Introduction The purpose of this paper is to present a procedure used by the authors for evaluating and designing soil liner systems. This method is particularly valuable in evaluating various treatment schemes for chemically amended soil liners. A tabulation of laboratory test results on various soil types are presented to quantify the effectiveness of certain treatments. A typical liner design program includes developing and proving soil borrow sources, designing the cross-section of the liner system, developing construction specifications, and providing construction services to ensure the intended product is achieved. Material Source Development The first step in designing a soil liner is to identify and evaluate suitable borrow sources within an economical haulage range. This is best done in a two step approach: a reconnaissance level investigation to identify target areas and a detailed evaluation of those targets. Reconnaissance: The goal of the preliminary investigation is to locate potential borrow sources for liner quality soils. This includes all natural materials which can be compacted, chemically treated, or otherwise amended to yield an installed permeability at or below some target value. This requires utilization of all available data sources: Soil Conservation Service, BLM, aerial photos, USGS geologic maps, and project geologist records. The goal at this stage is to locate shallow deposits of favorable soil types. The Unified Soil Classification System provides an excellent first pass grouping. Clays, clayey sands and silts are the most favorable soil types, although silty sands and occasionally clayey gravels can make excellent liners, and are often amenable to chemical modification. The lowest permeabilities are generally achieved with CH, CL and MH soils. Once preliminary targets have been identified using visual examination, laboratory classification tests should be performed to further refine the selection. Testing at this stage should include gradation, plasticity and hydrometer analyses. Additionally, "preg-rob" testing should be done as early as practical. Preg-rob is a phenomenon where gold or silver ions in solution associate with the clay, or other, minerals. When this occurs, a portion of the gold or silver leached from the ore is actually tied-up by the clay and thus a reduces recovery. Testing for this consists of agitating a small sample of the soil in a solution containing dissolved gold or silver, preferably of similar chemical make-up as the solution which will contact the actual liner. The solution and soil are assayed before and after agitation to determine loss to the clay. A reliable estimate of the hydraulic conductivity, commonly referred to as permeability, can be developed from the D10 value by the use of Hezen's formula: K = 100 (D1012 This relationship is limited to soils where the finer particles do not move due to the force of flowing water (i.e.: "hydrodynamic stabilitym)(1). Additionally, the effect of platty particles on permeability is not as predictable as the effect of equidimensional particles. D10 is the sieve opening size at which 10% of the material is finer. Plasticity is also important from several standpoints. Constructability is directly related to plasticity. Very plastic clays and non-plastic silts both tend to be difficult soils, while medium plastic clays and clayey sands are generally very desirable. Post construction performance is also related to plasticity (e.g. swelling, shrinkage cracking, frost heave, etc.). Additionally, low plasticity silts and silty sands generally do not respond well to chemical amendment. Source Development: The result of the reconnaissance evaluation should be an estimate of the relative probability of developing a suitable borrow source within an economical haul distance. Of course, "economical distance" depends on the degree of handling and treatment the borrow material requires, as well as the cost of synthetic alternatives. The purpose of the detailed investigation is to prove out quantity and quality of material sources, and determine design parameters such as degree of compaction, mixing, treatment and thickness of liner. The emphasis of the testing program should be permeability and strength. Strength becomes increasingly important as the slope of the liner and the height of the heap increase. The Tanco pegmatite is located in the Bird River greenstone belt of south-eastern Manitoba approximately 160 km northeast of Winnipeg (Figure 1). The orebody was discovered in 1929 and subsequently attempts were made to exploit it for tin by Jack Nutt Mines Ltd. and later in the middle 1950's by Montgary Oil Ltd., who extensively developed but did not produce from its lithium deposits. In 1966 systematic investigation of the pegmatite as a potential source of tantalum led to the founding of Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada Ltd. (TANCO), and production of tantalum concentrates from the Bernie Lake mine commenced in 1969. Tanco's currently jointly owned by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Cabot Corporation, and the Province of Manitoba.

Since their functioning relies heavily on large bodies of knowledge, they are often referred to as knowledge-based systems. These systems can contain the skill and knowledge of an individual human expert or the combined knowledge of a group of experts. The knowledge embodied in an expert system can consist of specific facts, HSHA regulations, heuristics or rules-of-thumb used by the expert, and databases. The purpose of this paper will be to introduce the participants in the ?Increase Competitiveness Thru Innovation? session to expert systems. This introduction will enable the participants to better appreciate the balance of the papers to be presented in this session. These papers will deal with specific mining problems and a proposed innovative solution. This paper will discuss such topics as problem-solving paradigms, rules of inference, knowledge representation, and the structure of expert systems.

The Bond International Gold (BIG) Colosseum Gold Mine was discovered in 1865, but no recorded production occurred until the 1930's, with production approximately 19k9 (615 oz) of gold. The mine was closed in 1942 as a non-essential industry during World War II. The property was acquired by Dallhold Resources in mid 1986. Construction of a 1.1 million Mt carbon-in-pulp, cyanide mill started in November, 1986, and was completed in September, 1987. Minable reserves are estimated to be 9,560,831Mt (10,539,000St), with an average grade of 2.1 g/Mt (0.062 oz/st). This paper describes a general view of process flow and plant equipment, as well as a look at the maintenance and operational problems encountered in the fist six months of operation.

Several processes involving injection of sorbent and humidification water downstream of the air preheater in a coal-fired boiler unit, are being developed as low capital cost retrofit S02 control options. Extensive laboratory work, pilot plant programs and larger scale programs have developed performance data and design information. Many of these programs were supported by the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) as "proofs-of-concept" of three different processes proposed by Dravo, Bechtel and General Electric. Based on these project results, DOE formulated a comprehensive in-duct sorbent injection development program to fully commercialize the technology by 1992. Also, EPRI will conduct a 4 MWe pilot program to develop its HYPAS process. The Consol Coolside process is scheduled for utility demonstration in 1989 on a 104 MWe unit at the Ohio Edison Edgewater Station under partial sponsorship of the DOE Clean Coal Technology Program.

FMC's Paradise Peak Mine was discovered in July 1983. The deposit at discovery contained 11,340 ,000 tonnes (12,500,000 tons) of ore grading 3.71 glt (0.108 oz/ton) Au and 120 glt (3.5 oz/ton) Ag. A feasibility study was completed by Davy McKee in May 1984, with detailed engineering starting in June 1984. Construction of the facility started on January 2, 1985 with plant start-up taking place on April 14, 1986, two and one half months ahead of schedule and more than 10% under budget. This paper describes the status of the operation approximately 1-1/2 years after start-up including revisions and additions to equipment and process.

There are similarities, and differences, in the surfactants used in cosmetics and detergents. In both applications anionic surfactants constitute the major category. Their main function is to clean, i.e. remove grease and particulate matter from fibrous or hard surface substrates. Cationic surfactants are used for conditioning substrates. Nonionic surfactants can function as a substrate cleanser but are seldom used as such in cosmetics; however, selected non-ionics are often employed as a primary emulsifier. Several specialized nonionic surfactants are used as a secondary surfactant in formulations to promote foaming and emulsification. Specific examples and modes of action of surfactants will be presented.

Extraction of manganese, gold, and silver from a low-grade manganiferous-silver ore was investigated by thiourea leaching followed by standard cyanidation. The levels of reagent concentrations in this investigation were 0.0 -1.0 M thiourea and 0.0 -1.0 M sulfuric acid. Temperature and agitation speed were maintained at Z5 °c and 300 rpm, respectively. The dissolution of gold, and silver was shown to be dependent mainly on sulfuric acid and thiourea concentrations. In general, 50.0 % Ag, 98.0 % Au, and 75 % Mn were recovered from a Mn-Ag ore by thiourea leaching. Overall silver extraction of 98.0 % was obtained by cyanidation after thiourea leaching. Thiourea leaching of sodium bisulfite leach residues was also studied, and the total extraction of gold and silver were 97 % and 40 %, respectively. Finally, a two-stage thiourea leach was also investigated.

A review of published literature reveals case histories whereby the entire periphery of a coal pillar has “burst” out as a single event during first workings, the associated energy and material release causing significant damage to adjacent roadways and any equipment/infrastructure located within said roadways. Such events are distinct from coal burst events during first workings such as that at the Austar Mine in 2014, or those linked to overburden bumps related to either horizontal stress-driven slip along major faults and/or thick, massive strata units in the overburden or floor of the coal seam.

The purpose of roasting gold ores is to release for extraction, typically by cyanidation, the small particles of gold which are surrounded by refractory stone. The roasting simply opens up passages for the penetration of solution into the interior of the ore particles. This is accomplished by the removal by volatilization or formation of volatile oxides of certain constituents such as sulfur, arsenic or antimony. Temperature is an important parameter. High temperatures tend to form a dense iron particle rather than a "spongy" calcine. The dense iron particles result in lower gold recoveries. High temperature can cause melting of some components which also results in gold encapsulation. Roasting of refractory gold ore concentrates has been practiced for decades. Multiple hearth, rotary kiln and muffle reactors were first used for roasting. Fluid bed roasting provided a low capital cost, low maintenance technology with better process control and soon became the favored technology. The first fluid bed concentrate roasters were commissioned in the late 1940's. Early fluid beds were "bubbling" type. Environmental considerations did not significantly impact on the design. Feedstocks were highly exothermic and reaction rates were relatively rapid. Roasting today must compete with other technologies for treatment of refractory ores. Ore bodies which are not

The Courthouse Commons SEM Tunnel was excavated within 6 feet of cover beneath two buildings in downtown San Diego utilizing high-precision geotechnical instrumentation. The excavated dimensions are approximately 25 feet in diameter and 328 feet in length connecting two in-service detentionlevel security buildings. Presupport includes large-diameter grouted canopy pipes and smaller pipe spiles. Initial support consists of fiber-reinforced shotcrete with lattice girders. This paper presents observed ground and structure behavior and lessons learned.
