9.1 INTRODUCTION There are approximately 70,000 abandoned coal mines nation¬wide, which is about 35 times the number of underground coal mines presently operating. The US Bureau of Mines estimates that there are over 8 million acres of undermined land due to the extraction of coal, metals, and nonmetals. Subsidence has affected more than 2 million acres, and more than 99% of the subsidence is related to underground coal mining. There is reason to believe that some of the remaining 6 million acres of the undermined land have a high potential to subside. The expansion of housing, highways, commercial structures, and other facilities has required the use of many areas that are underlain by abandoned coal mines, and this growth will continue. Many subsidence problems are derived from the collapse of aban¬doned underground coal mines. There are numerous abandoned mine workings in the anthracite fields of northeastern Pennsylva¬nia, in the Appalachian bituminous fields, the Illinois Basin, the Rock Springs, Wyoming area, and other areas of the United States (Gray et al., 1976). Various room and pillar patterns of mining have been used in the dipping anthracite seams and the nearly flat-lying bituminous seams with considerable variation in the per¬centage of coal extracted. The progressive deterioration of pillars, mine floors, and mine roofs after long exposure to air and water may later result in the collapse of strata over the mine entries, the crushing of the remaining coal pillars, or the bearing failure of the mine floor beneath the coal pillars. Subsidence then results as the collapse reaches the ground surface in the form of differential strains, depressions, cracking of the ground, and sinkhole devel¬opment. Subsidence over active longwall mines, which occurs concurrently with mining or is completed within a short period following coal extraction, has been studied extensively over the past decade. On the other hand, subsidence over abandoned coal mines receives little attention by the researchers, mainly because it is difficult to predict and takes place decades after mining has ceased. The techniques of investigating the subsidence events over abandoned coal mines are similar to those employed for active mines except that at the outset, it is necessary to determine whether or not the subsidence events are mining-related (Chugh et al., 1986; Cummings and Singh, 1986; Peng and Hsiung, 1986). This calls for the identification and confirmation of abandoned mine workings under or near the affected surface structures. Gen¬erally old mine maps, if available, are acquired, the surface bore¬holes are drilled for confirmation of the accuracy of the mine maps and determination of the potential for continued subsidence. Sub¬sidence monuments are established and periodic surveys con¬ducted to determine the amount and trends of surface movement in and around the affected surface structures; surface boreholes are used to investigate the integrity of the underground structures (i.e., roof, coal pillars, and floor) by TV camera. They are also used for monitoring the vertical and horizontal movements of the subsur¬face strata by Sondex (FPBX) and inclinometer (PFBI), respec¬tively, for determining the continuity of the subsidence events. Tape extensometers, crackmeters, etc., are used to monitor the development trends of major cracks in the structures or on the ground. These data are used to identify the causes of the subsidence events. Finally, abatement methods are selected to stabilize the structures. It must be noted that most subsidence events over abandoned coal mines are reported after the fact, and investiga¬tions are begun some time after reporting, that the subsequent measured movements are generally much smaller than that at¬tained in the active mines, and that due to lack of knowledge about the damage conditions and the exact location of the abandoned mine workings with respect to the affected surface structures, the precise causes of surface subsidence or surface structural damages are in most cases very difficult to identify. 9.2 TYPES OF SURFACE SUBSIDENCE According to Gray et al. (1977), after examining 354 incidents of subsidence above abandoned mines in the Pittsburgh metropol¬itan area, the subsidence features have a mean diameter (i.e. the average of long and short dimensions) from less than 1 ft to 1600 ft, with 84% less than or equal to 15 ft; the subsidence features have a depth ranging from less than 1 ft to 48 ft, with 89% less than 25 ft; 66% of the subsidence features are deeper than they are broad. Nearly 59% of the subsidence features occur with overbur¬den less than 50 ft thick and 81% less than 100 ft thick. No subsidence features occur with overburden thicker than 450 ft (Fig. 9.1). Occurrence of subsidence incidents varies from imme¬diately to more than 100 years after mining (Fig. 9.2). In analyzing the characteristics of approximately 3000 chim¬ney subsidence features along the Colorado Front Range, Matheson and Eckert-Clift (1986) examined historical aerial photographs on 4- to 14-year intervals between 1937 and 1967 and found that the majority of observable surface subsidence features occurred within 30 to 40 years after mining. According to Gray et al. (1977), the most prevalent subsi¬dence features over abandoned mined land are sinkholes, with depths of more than 3 ft, and troughs or sags, usually less than 3 ft deep. Sinkholes are steep-sided pits, while troughs are shallow depressions much wider in area than sinkholes. A. SINKHOLE SUBSIDENCE A sinkhole is caused by the collapse of a mine roof that works its way upward. If it is not arrested during the process it will eventually reach the surface and emerge as a sinkhole. The process is governed by the thickness and character of the overburden, the width and height of the mine openings. Sinkholes are usually 3 to 20 ft deep and may be 2 to 40 ft in diameter, although most are fewer than 16 ft across (Gray et al., 1977; DuMontelle and Bauer, 1983). Newly formed sinkholes have steep sides with straight or bell-shaped walls. At times, they appear to be conical in profile with the apex upward. If the topsoil collapses, the top portion will widen to form an hour-glass shape. Sinkhole subsidence usually occurs over abandoned mines less than 165 ft deep (Hunt, 1979). Matheson and Eckert-Clift (1986) found that chimney sink¬holes are likely to occur when the ratio of overburden thickness to mining height (h/m) is less than 4 to 5. When h/m is between 5 and 10 to 11, the potential occurrence of chimney sinkholes decreases rapidly. When h/m is more than 10 to 11, less than 10% of the mine openings that collapse will induce sinkholes on the surface.

Introduction and Historical Background Although both sluices and devices using a simple flowing film are among the oldest known methods of concentration, they are still extensively employed in a variety of situations where they are not only efficient but also have a low operating cost. More particularly, they are valuable for making a bulk concentrate of high specific gravity minerals from alluvials and beach sand and in upgrading low value ores. The antiquity of some of the basic concepts can be seen in the fact that they are found in Agricola's De Re Metallica which was published at Basic in 1546, while in 1602, Carew114 gave a fairly clear account of tin ore dressing in Cornwall in which grass turves were used to catch the cassiterite. This is perhaps one of the forerun¬ners of the blanket strake. The planilla of Mexico, the lanchute of Malaysia and the old Cornish box huddle are also descended from these early strakes. In fact, a sluice with holes in the bottom for concentrate discharge was shown by Agricola, not unlike the principle used in the plane table and the lamflo sluice. The convex huddle for the treatment of sandy material appeared about 1848 and the concave form eight to ten years later. For the treatment of "slime" sizes, wooden dead frames which were manually worked were used in Cornwall for many years but gave way to the automatic water-operated type in 1860, and even a mechanically tilted frame was described by Henderson115 in 1857. Theoretical Considerations The behavior of solid particles in suspension depends to a great extent upon the pulp density and the size of the suspended particles. In a fairly dilute suspension, such as that normally used when dealing with small particle sizes, the behavior of particles in a flowing film results from two effects. These are the lateral displacement, which is determined by the time taken for each particle to penetrate the flowing film and reach the solid surface, and the resistance offered by each particle to further displacement after it has reached this surface. The initial penetration through the flowing film depends on the size and specific gravity of the particle and the thickness and viscosity of the film. As a result the smaller particles will migrate further before their movement is retarded relative to larger particles of the same specific gravity. The behavior on reaching the solid surface de¬pends on whether there is a single particle layer or, as is more often the case, a multiple layer or thin bed of material which is sufficiently dilated, permits the penetration of higher specific gravity grains. Thrust of Flowing Films. When a thin film of liquid flows over a plane solid surface, the layer next to the surface remains at rest but the velocity of the film increases with the distance from the surface and becomes a maximum near, but not quite at, the free surface. Therefore, a particle in suspension in such a film is acted upon by a greater force near the upper part of the film than at the lower part, resulting in an overturning effect. After a particle reaches the separating surface or an accumulated densely packed bed of other particles, the liquid flow causes it to move downstream by rolling, sliding, or by a movement involving alternating suspension and deposi¬tion (saltation). In rolling and sliding, which are brought about by a substantially noneddying stream, the large submerged particles are acted upon to the greatest extent and they move more rapidly than smaller ones, notwithstanding their greater mass. When two particles of the same size but of different specific gravity are considered, the higher density one moves more slowly by reason of its greater mass. As a result the particles tend to become arranged in the manner shown in Fig. 29. If any particle is so large as to stand above the water surface, the transporting force on such a particle, although the maximum available, will have less effect than that on a submerged one. Such large grains are therefore carried a lesser distance. Fluid Velocity in a Flowing Film It can be shown that if y is the distance within the flowing film from the interface, the fluid velocity v' at this point is given by IIn this equation p' is the fluid density, g the acceleration due to gravity, a the viscosity, a the angle made by the film to the horizontal, and 0 the film thickness (in cgs units). Furthermore, the volume Q of fluid per unit time and unit width is related to the film thickness and can be calculated, since which upon integration gives Consideration of the velocity v' (Eq. l) and the terminal falling velocity µ derived from Stokes law enables the horizontal travel dz in time dt to be calculated as follows: Again integration and substitution of Eq. 3 gives In this equation, z is the distance travelled before a particle of density p at the top of the fluid film has settled on the concentrating surface. From these expressions it can be seen that the depth of the flowing film varies as the cube root of the volume of fluid and inversely as the cube root of the sine of the plane surface inclination. Similarly the distance a particle can travel before reaching the surface is directly related to the quantity of fluid and its viscosity. The viscosity of pulp is greatly increased by the presence of near colloidal particles and consequently the penetration of the somewhat larger grains through the flowing film is retarded, resulting in them being carried further across the concentrator deck. Obviously this effect can be reduced by prior removal of some or all of the ultra¬fine particles. The detrimental effect of kaolin on the separation of fine ferrosilicon from quartz has also been demonstrated by Johnston,116 the relationship between viscosity and efficiency of separation being shown in Fig. 30. The pH value also has a very marked influence on the viscosity and the use of acid mine water, for example, can increase viscosity materially and thereby result in lower efficiency. Dilation of Multi-Particle Systems Except during washing (when a single particle layer may exist) concentration usually takes place in a bed of particles which is partially dilated or stirred by eddy currents. Coal in most refuse ponds including those owned by Consolidation Coal Company can be recovered by froth flotation techniques. Laboratory studies show that the flotation conditions required for coal recovery varied greatly from pond to pond. The variables found to be most important for high coal recovery and low product ash were: a) the amount and type of flotation reagents and b) the degree of conditioning before flotation. Coal recovery at a rate of 0.504 kg/s (2 tons/hr) was demonstrated at a pond site employing a mobile froth flotation unit.

INTRODUCTION Sublevel mining is a mass mining method based upon the utilization of gravity flow of the blasted ore and the caved overlying waste rock mass. As with any other mining method, sublevel caving has advantages and dis¬advantages which must be carefully considered and evaluated. The major advantages of sublevel caving are dis¬cussed as follows: Because all of the mining activities are executed in or from relatively small openings, sublevel caving is one of the safest mining methods. Drifts, which are the pri¬mary working places, are distributed in a uniform pat¬tern on all levels. Normally the maximum dimensions of the sublevel drifts are about 5 m wide and 3.7 m high. The transportation drifts can have the same section, or the height may be increased to about 4.5 m when trucks are loaded in the transport drifts. The stability and safety of such drifts in competent rock can be easily controlled by smooth blasting or by a combination of smooth blasting with shotcreting. In less competent rock masses, stability can be achieved by combined reinforc¬ing, for example, by a combination of smooth blasting, shotcreting, and rockbolting. The major mining activities can be broken down into three groups: drifting and reinforcing; ore fragmenta¬tion, i.e., production drilling and blasting; and ore draw¬ing, loading, and transportation, and all are relatively simple. Because of the repetitive nature of the mining system, one can standardize almost completely all min¬ing activities. This means that a high degree of work efficiency can be achieved. Because the components of mining production in sublevel caving can be standardized, a high degree of mechanization is possible. In modern sublevel caving the sections of drifts and tunnels are sufficiently large to allow the introduction of large trackless mining equip¬ment. The advantages of a trackless system can be then broadly utilized not only for direct mining but also for all services, including the transportation of mining per¬sonnel to the working place. The flexibility of mining is very good. Standardiza¬tion and specialization of mining activities and equip¬ment on separate levels (lower level or levels in de¬velopment, upper level or levels in production mining) together with the trackless system yield a high degree of flexibility. This allows a rapid start-up of mining and good flexibility in making production rate changes. The method lends itself to good work concentration, organization, and working conditions. Normally, on the lower levels, various phases of development are under¬way. Upper levels are in various stages of extraction. Therefore the work can be easily organized into a sys¬tem which excludes interference between mining activi¬ties. Safety of mining (in small dimension openings), good work organization, high mechanization using large modern mining equipment, etc., comprise very good working conditions. Naturally such a system enables a high work concentration and rationalization of separate specialized mining activities and therefore mining by sublevel caving can be effective and relatively in¬expensive. The major disadvantages of sublevel caving, on the other hand, are: There is a relatively high dilution of the ore by caved waste. Various types of ore loss can occur. When the ex¬traction limit (that point yielding the maximum accept¬able amount of dilution) is reached, the remaining highly diluted ore represents an ore loss. Some ore is lost in passive zones located on the level of extraction between the active zones of the gravity flow. Part of the ore from these passive zones can be recovered together with ore extraction on the lower sublevel, but some un¬diluted and often not fragmented ore located in passive zones above the plane of the footwall is lost. In gen¬eral, these losses are larger as the inclination of the ore body and the footwall is reduced. A relatively large amount of development is re¬quired. This includes transport drifts, usually located in the footwall waste rock on each sublevel, and sub¬level drifts, which connect the active mining areas to the transport drifts and as a result are partially in ore and partially in the waste rock of the footwall. The waste rock length increases as the inclination of the ore body and footwall decreases. It also includes orepasses, used for transport of the ore or waste from the separate sublevels downward to the main haulage level, and normally driven in waste; and inclined drifts or tunnels, which provide a connection for the trackless equipment between the main haulage level and the separate sublevels and are driven in waste. Finally there is the de¬struction of the surface through subsidence. To maximize the ore recovery, minimize the dilu¬tion, and achieve a high efficiency of mining by sub¬level caving, good data regarding the gravity flow pa¬rameters for the blasted ore and the caved waste are of utmost importance. The exact type and amount of data required depend upon the purpose and needs of the study. For the first feasibility study, it may be sufficient to utilize the data from other sublevel caving operations with similar conditions and circumstances. For any higher level of mine planning it is clear that more exact data, including analytical and experimental analyses up to full-scale in-situ testing, are necessary. Basic gravity flow principles and design guidelines for the application of the sublevel caving mining method are presented in the following sections. Although some¬what simplified, they should provide a basis for mine planning and operation. The gravity flow principles described can be effectively applied to other mining situations, with some modification. Also, steep dipping coal seams can be effectively mined by modified sub¬level caving.

On August 3, 1987, a hearing was held by the House Subcommittee on Energy and the Environment to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA). Four panels of environmental/citizen group representatives went before the Subcommittee to report on the state of affairs (from their perspective) of the coal industry and the Office of Surface Mining, Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) As expected, these groups had little positive news to report and continued to focus on glaring deficiencies within the surface mining program. They indicated that gross abuse of SMCRA has continued over the past ten years and the states have performed poorly. Congressman Udall's opening comments perhaps best characterized the mood of the group with his statement that "The Act has not accomplished what I or the people of the coalfields had hoped." and " ? a segment of the coal industry has continued in its bitter and implacable opposition to the most basic of environmental controls."

The recent study by R. M. Hays(l) prompted the study summarized in this paper. In his Interesting paper, Mr. Hays shows fine results to be attainable by a relatively complex flowsheet on a semi-taconite, a manifestly difficult ore to treat. We obtained a semi -taconite from Minnesota, and treated this sample by wet magnetic separation alone. The device in which the separation was accomplished is the standard pilot-plant, laboratory separator in use at Magnetic Engineering Associates' laboratory (MEA) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It consists of a cylindrical space which can be magnetized by turning on the magnet of the separator. In this cylindrical space, there is a canister which provides the special configuration of the magnetic field and magnetic field gradients that MEA considers to be required. The ore pulp is made to flow through the canister while the current is on. A portion of the pulp is retained in the canister, and the rest is evolved as a non-magnetic fraction. The laboratory device is cyclic, but it accurately predicts the results obtainable by an Industrial unit of either cyclic or continuous type (moving matrix). The ore tested was 99.5°%o -325 mesh, and approximately 75% -500 mesh. The concentrate from this ore was, therefore, eminently suitable for pelletizing. In passing the ore through the magnet, we had the choice of repeatedly passing the concentrate from the first step through the operation, or of repeatedly passing the non-magnetics. In our experiments, the first method was clearly superior from the stand¬point of the cleanliness of concentrate. Of the many tests which we have made, we think that we have to retain two which

Diffuse - reflectance Fourier - transform infrared spectroscopy, Hallimond tube flotation and microelectrophoresis have been utilized to investigate the reactions involved in the adsorption-abstraction of K-amylxanthate on finely ground galena and pyrite. In order to work under well-controlled conditions both minerals were wet ground in a specially built laboratory stainless steel or iron mill. Four surface products were found to be formed on galena: monocoordinate lead xanthate, non-stoichiometric lead xanthate, dixanthogen, and amyl carbonate disulphide. Only dixanthogen was observed on pyrite after using stainless steel rods, while ferric iron xanthate was found when iron rods were utilized.

Laboratory flotation tests were carried out on six Polish samples of different rank. Each coal sample was screened into 7 size fractions. The floatability of size -by- size for various size ranges for different samples was investigated as: well as the original samples. The results showed that in flotation of size -by -size, the intermediate size had the maximum floatability. The range of this intermediate sizes varied with the rank of the coal. Entrainment was shown to be an important mechanism to the recovery of fine particles in flotation of the original samples".

The spreading-ridge, or accreting plate margin, is the primary conduit of metals delivered to the earth's surface. Isotope ratios of lead show primitive mantle values at these sites, indicating that this is true. We can use lead isotopes in any mineral deposit to indicate the degree to which the metal is "primitive" in the sense of having been uncontaminated with U-enriched crust or "crustal" in the sense that it has been cycling at the earth's surface since earlier times. The reason for this is that the upper continental crust has an enrichment in the ratio of U/Pb over that in the mantle, so that old continental leads have a larger radiogenic component. The primitive metals delivered to the surface at the spreading-ridge are transported on the oceanic plate until they reach a subduction zone. Here they become cycled in the "orogen". However, in this process the primitive metals are mixed with metals from the continent so that the average lead isotope ratios are between those in the mantle and the average upper continental crust. Subsequently a part of the metals in the orogen may become fixed in a new block of continent. However there are processes which continue to uplift and erode ancient continental regions so that there is a continuous feeding back of metals to the orogen. We have therefore a cycling of metals from the existing continental crust into the orogen where they are mixed with new contributions from the spreading ridge and mantle.

Tailings disposal has been a problem for the mining engineer since the beginning of the metal milling process. Disposal systems in common use have evolved as the most economic method for the disposal of an unwanted waste material within the disposal restrictions in force at the time of construction. As restrictions are constantly being expanded, the design requirements for tailings disposal systems are also being enlarged. However, proper design will always be to provide the most economic disposal system that will meet current safety and pollution requirements. This paper presents a brief description of some of the design features of tailings disposal systems in common use and presents specific design features of the gypsum tailings disposal pond at Kimberley, British Columbia, owned and operated by Cominco Ltd.

The classical slope analysis and a statistical technique were used in order to determine the iron complexes formed in the organic phase during the extraction of Fe(III) from Fe-Ni-Co sulfate solutions with Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) in kerosene. Equilibrium constants for the extraction based on these complexes were also calculated. The complexes determined were of the general form (Fe(OH)3-nRn?sHR)x' where n varied between 1 and 2.5 and s between 0 and 3, and both were found to be decreasing as the iron loading in the organic phase increased. Values of 1,2 and 3 were generally found for x, indicating that the complexes were monomers, dimers and trimers.

Agglomeration developments in the iron ore industry of North America are closely related to shifting patterns in commercially acceptable ore grades and even the definition of iron ores. These relationships have occurred mainly during the last 20 years. Many of these changes are an outgrowth of events which involved the history of the Mesabi Range. Although magnetic taconites had been discovered in the Lake Superior area about 1870, they remained unworked in part for lack of concentration methods and a generally unfavorable economic climate. Some 20 years later the rich Mesabi hematites were found beginning the era of direct shipping ores which continued through World War II. These Lake Superior iron ores included reserves of an estimated three billion tons. Following World War II, decreasing ore grades and rising costs began to force the closing of many underground iron mines. The early 501 s saw the beginning of the decline in direct shipping ores and a spurt in production of natural iron concentrate s. However, the market for unprocessed concentrates began to decline in the early 601 s as agglomerated products and foreign ores began to dominate the U. S. market.

The trace element geochemistry of the cherty, clay-rich carbonate residuum. Covering much of southern Missouri and adjacent parts of Arkansas was investigated during the early 1970's as part of a statewide geochemical survey of Missouri-1/2/3 The study was environmentally oriented and focused on the character of the "natural' geochemical environment of the state. A great deal of effort was made to collect samples that would represent the geochemical variability of the near-surface environment in an unbiased way. In general, this was accomplished by use of randomization procedures in both collection and analysis. Most of the sampling sites were selected randomly to prevent personal bias from entering into sample selection. In the laboratory, samples were analyzed in a randomized sequence to circumvent the effects of any systematic bias that may have entered into the laboratory procedures. Several residuum samples contained 1 000 parts per million (ppm) or more of Pb, Zn and Ba. All these samples were collected in Washington County in or near the barite district. The frequency distributions shown in figure 1 indicate just how unusual the residuum in Washington County is with regard to these three metals and copper. The shaded parts of the histograms represent the samples from Washington County. The histograms are based on analyses of 141 samples from 38 localities scattered over the subcrop of the Cambrian and Ordovician Formations of southern Missouri and northern Arkansas. Eight localities were selected randomly from over each of four bedrock units--Bonneterre Dolomite, Potosi and Eminence Dolomites, Roubidoux Formation, and the Jefferson City, Powell and Cotter Dolomites. Six localities were selected randomly from over the Gasconade Dolomite. The geochemical "background" for these elements in residuum is defined by samples from outside of Washington County (unshaded part of the histogram); lognormal distribution curves have been fitted to the corresponding parts of each histogram. The successful application of factors limiting the? availability of coal in eastern Kentucky depends on ac-curate assessment of the original resources. Examination of several previous coal-resource estimates for the region reveals significant differences among the outcomes. These differences relate to methods of analysis, biases in data and their utilization, and the problem of defining the lateral continuity of mineable beds. Improvements in the methods of estimating the original resources would greatly enhance the reliability of the results of the Coal Availability Program.

Air pollution control in primary aluminum smelter . Various processes are known for air pollution in electrolysis plants. Mainly two systems have to be taken into consideration: -Treatment of concentrated gases collected directly from hooded pots. This is normally achieved by either dry or wet process. This is not the object of this paper as these processes have been already described. -Treatment of low concentrated fumes. A certain amount of gaseous and solid fluoride (35 % of total fluor pollution) goes out of the hooded pot. Gases commonly called secondary fumes are generally treated by wet process. The object of 'this paper is to describe two plants with specific treatment for secondary fumes. 1/ A plant in operation in Vlissingen (Netherlands) for PECHINEY. 2/ Presentation of tests carried out by a specialized Company. The results of such tests have been used for the design of the scrubbers presently under construction for ALUMINIO ESPANOL San Ciprian (Spain).

Lightweight concretes date back to before the Roman Empire. The earlier concretes were made by combining a burnt lime for cementious material with pumice or volcanic rock for aggregate. Although structural value was limited due to its primitive nature, many structures were able to withstand the test of time. The rotary kiln expanded shale industry had a slow start that began around 1908. The industry was founded by Stephen J. Hayde of Kansas city, Missouri. Mr. Hayde noticed that the bloating effects of some aggregates were undesirable by the brick industry. Material of this type was considered waste and avoided in brick production, but he realized it had all the qualities and basic requirements for a concrete aggregate that would reduce weight and still retain structural value. It came into national attention by use in ocean-going vessels through a shipbuilding program undertaken by the united states Fleet Corporation. This research was brought about by the need to find a suitable material to replace high-grade plate steel due to a shortage created by World War I. The need prompted the government to supply the reserves that Stephen Hayde desired to continue and complete research into producing a uniform lightweight aggregate. "Most engineers are bright, hard-working, reliable, and prefer to avoid conflict. An engineering curriculum tends to self-select these characteristics. By most standards, you would expect workers exhibiting these traits to require minimal supervision. But is this true? Is this how most current engineering managers lead? Looking at some current theories on leadership combined with personal anecdotes, this presentation will look at some common misconceptions about leading engineers. INTRODUCTION Engineers are different. There, I said it. From cartoons to movies to television shows and more, there is a reason stereotypes of engineers resonate. Yes, you can find a lot individual variation among specific engineers that you may know, but they do not detract from some of the overarching commonalities that engineers are known for. CLASH OF CULTURES What distinguishes a professional? Raelin (1985), in his book Clash of Cultures, describes professionals as having superior intellectual training, maintaining their own standards of excellence, and being supported by associations that maintain the quality of the profession. Engineers obviously fit all three of these ideas: an engineering degree is still regarded as one of the most difficult to attain; we maintain our own standards both through peer-review and in academia through ABET accreditation; and through professional associations like SME to promote the discipline and foster technical growth. Six characteristics representing professional status are described by Raelin (1985, p. 9): Expertise—prolonged specialized training in a body of abstract knowledge. Autonomy—the freedom to choose the means to solving a problem. Commitment—Primary interest is in pursuing the practice of one’s own chosen specialty. Identification—identifying with the profession and with fellow professionals, both through formal associations and through peers external to the organization. Ethics—providing service without concern for oneself or without becoming emotionally involved with the client. Standards—committed to help in policing the conduct of fellow professionals. Engineers are smart—in the vast majority of cases they are hired specifically for their expertise. At a typical mine the ventilation engineer knows more about mine ventilation than anyone else on site; the same is true for the rock mechanics engineer, the explosives engineer, the planning engineer who uses sophisticated computer software—each is the expert for their particular area at the mine, that is why they have that responsibility. This can present a dilemma for the manager for each (sometimes all) of these engineers. The manager needs to keep everyone on task and focused on the objectives of the organization. Because they have reached their position by following the norms and expectations of the organization, managers tend to have a certain amount of loyalty to that organization. Engineers, on the other hand, tend to have mixed loyalties, having as much loyalty and affinity for their profession as they do for the particular company they happen to be working for at any given time. This dynamic can often lead to power struggles between the managers, based on their positional authority in the organization, and the engineers, based on their specialized knowledge (Camm, 2013)."

"There’s no fast way to add more than four miles of track, most of it underground, to the Sound Transit Link Light Rail system in the Seattle area. But increasingly busy traffic through a number of neighborhoods made it necessary. That’s the challenge a joint venture of several tunneling contractors faced when starting its portion of the $1.9 billion Northgate Link Extension in 2013, and the project is still keeping them busy three years later. Completion will mean just a 14-minute ride from Northgate to downtown for an extra 60,000 passengers by 2030. The transit lines will join 58 km (36 miles) of new and under-construction light rail lines running north, east and south from Seattle.Voters, tired of long commute times, approved the project, a key part of Seattle’s regional mass transit system, in 2008. The extension is part of a plan adopted by the Sound Transit board in 1996 to connect the region’s major activity centers. The Northgate project is meant to relieve one of the area’s most congested traffic areas by connecting the Northgate, Roosevelt and University District neighborhoods to existing routes including downtown Seattle and SeaTac airport.Sound Transit dedicated more than a quarter of the project’s estimated expense — $440 million -— to general contractor JCM Northlink LLC to handle the tunnel segment. JCM is a joint venture formed in 2013 between Jay Dee Contractors of Livonia, MI, Frank Coluccio Construction of Seattle, WA and Michels Corp. of Brownsville, WI. The contractors regularly collaborate on large-scale projects and brought experience working on a different section of the extension they completed in 2013.JCM project leaders knew immediately that the schedule would be demanding. They had to work around the clock, six days a week to meet deadlines. The extension runs through highly populated areas, meaning contractors had to follow strict city noise restrictions between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. Plus, supervisors needed to manage the scheduling of nearly 250 employees to keep work running smoothly.“We had eight different operations and four different subcontractors trying to work in one tunnel,” said Chris Wood, JCM site project superintendent. “It’s important that we keep work linear. That’s the biggest challenge: keeping a path in and out so you can pour concrete, keep electricians and carpenters going, and accomplish everything else.”"
