In many ways, conveyors are the lifeline of mining and processing operations. Like arteries in the human body, they continuously supply materials to and carry finished products and waste away from vital on-going operations. And like arteries, when the conveyors are running with less than maximum efficiency and productivity, it spells serious trouble for the operation's overall health. Inefficient conveyors suffer carryback, leading to the build-up of materials on idlers and other expensive components. They spill and leak material at loading zones and conveyor transfer points, causing accumulations that can damage the belt, wear moving components, and increase both clean-up labor and maintenance expense. They wander or mistrack, spilling material and endangering personnel and conveyor components including the belt itself. And through these inefficiencies, they multiply the operation's hidden costs. These added expenses are created in lost production, increased downtime for service and maintenance, and the cost of the replacement of prematurely worn equipment. In addition, the attitude that inefficiency is "good enough" is recognized elsewhere in the organization; as a result, other departments relax or operate at less than peak performance. Quality goes down and with it employee morale.

Although there have been great advances regarding the understanding of mine fires in underground mines in the last century, fires remain high risk incidents. During fire scenarios, many crucial decisions and actions can be made that greatly influence the outcomes of these scenarios. Underground worker decisions are mainly based on training and experience, which in some cases can be complemented with previous analysis of fire effects. In order to review the guidelines that should be taken into account for this kind of examination, a numerical analysis of effects produced by a shuttle car fire under five different ventilation conditions was carried out. The analysis provides some insightful recommendations for firefighting personnel such as time for direct attack and best attack position for first responders and fire brigade groups. Also, the most critical parameters for each scenario were determined. Finally, all results were systematically organized and a first approximation of a fire classification based on the tenability limits was provided for first responder and fire brigade groups. The methodology used in this study for the fire classification could allow for the most appropriate decisions by firefighting personnel increasing the probability to put fires out without compromising their health and safety. INTRODUCTION While there have been great advances regarding the causes of mine fires in underground mines in the last century “small fires have occurred and always will occur in underground mines” (Conti, Chasko, Wiehagen, & Lazzara, 2005). The response time and decisions made during an underground mine fire are critical elements that have direct influence on the event outcome. Mine fires can grow in size quickly causing catastrophic consequences, thus rapid and suitable response actions can result in the difference between an minor emergency situation and a disaster. Upon the confirmation of a fire, a decision must be made regarding whether to fight the fire or evacuate the mine. Even though all underground coal mines possess emergency response plans and firefighting personnel are highly trained, decisions can be complemented with previous numerical analyses. Such analyses could contribute with the knowledge of potential fire effects and consequently with fire preparedness in the mine. Preparedness in underground mines is an important element to reduce the probability of the negative consequences of a mine fire. The time elapsed between the detection of the fire and response in the early stage is a serious component since small fires can produce larger and more serious consequences. If a mine fire cannot be put out within the short time after discovery, the chance of getting the system back in balanced or the success of safely controlling and extinguishing a mine fire is reduced (Conti et al., 2005, Conti, Chasko, Wiehagen, & Lazzara, 2000, Trevits, Yuan, Teacoach, Valoski, & Urosek, 2009, Brake, 2013). As confirmed by Conti and others, if a mine fire cannot be controlled by direct firefighting methods the probability of extinguishing the fire, without sealing is greatly reduced (Conti et al., 2005). However, response actions such as direct extinguishment must be carried out without compromising the health and safety of the firefighting personnel (Kim, Lönnermark, & Ingason, 2010).

The U.S. Bureau of Mines inventoried and characterized mineral sites and production plants within 200 km of the border in both the U.S. and Mexico. Sources of information included the USBM Minerals Availability System, the USBM Automated Mineral Information System, the USGS Mineral Resources Data System, the Mine Safety and Health Administration Address/Employment File, and the literature. Three hundred seventy-eight major construction material and industrial mineral properties were identified and characterized in the U.S. and Mexican parts of the Borderlands. Sixty-six major metallic mineral properties were identified and characterized in the Mexican part of the Borderlands.

"INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to investigate the potential for use of UAVs in underground mines and present a prototype design for a novel autorotating UAV platform for underground 3D data collection. The mining industry has recently shown increased interest in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to assist in everyday operations [20, 11, 4]. Above ground, small UAVs are in some cases a more efficient, inexpensive, and safer alternative to manned aircrafts currently used for photography, inspection and security [6, 10]. For example, attaching camera, infrared and LiDAR payloads, UAVs can provide a low-cost method of obtaining highly accurate 3D photogrammetric data and aerial photography. UAVs are now commonly used in open pit mining operations for applications that include stockpile surveying, 3D pit modelling, facilities management, accident reporting, progress monitoring, and environmental assessment [11]. There are numerous companies offering UAV services for mining applications; e.g., UAV Geomatics, Leica Geosystems, Sky Futures, SenseFly and FlyTerra, to name just a few. Common services include stockpile and open pit volume computations, environmental assessment, aerial mapping and photogrammetry. Although the aforementioned services are thosemost commonly provided by UAV surveying companies, they may also add value to other daily mining operations. For instance, SenseFly offers pre and post-blast monitoring in order to identify the presence of misfires and wall damage. This data can also be used to reconcile the blast results with expected results. GEM Systems offers a UAV equipped with a magnetometer for mineral exploration surveys. Companies such as Barrick have even used UAVs for solids modelling at tailings dams and stability monitoring [11]. UAVs in mining have so far been mostly limited to surface applications. Harsh underground environments pose many obstacles for flying UAVs. The confined space, dampness, reduced visibility, air movement, and lack of control signal propagation hinders most operators from being able to fly a drone underground. It may be that truly practical uses for UAVs underground will require either autonomous or semi-autonomous flight capabilities. Although there are many difficulties with flying underground, the potential benefits from a working system could greatly improve mining operations. The potential benefits of deploying UAV platforms underground include access to unreachable and dangerous locations and removing personnel from unsafe situations. These benefits have the potential to greatly improve mine monitoring and mine safety. Research has shown that current UAV technologies exist that allow for autonomous indoor flight. Extensive research has been done to develop UAV systems that are capable of performing on-board simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), which can allow them to navigate and map a foreign environment autonomously [5, 7, 1, 13]. Grzonka [7] successfully used an open hardware quadrotor to autonomously navigate and map an office building. The research outlines the localization, mapping, path planning, height estimation and control of the autonomous quadrotor. Other research has been done that exploits autonomous UAVs for search and rescue. Kassecker [9] proposed a software and hardware framework for a quadrotor capable of indoor and outdoor urban search and rescue and Rudol [19] developed a system for human body detection and geolocalization using an autonomous UAV.The use of autonomous UAVs in search and rescue has the potential to improve situational awareness and surveillance for a rescue team. Similar research has been done that uses autonomous UAVs for indoor exploration. Pravitra [15] outlined a strategy for autonomous exploration of miniature air vehicles (MAVs) within indoor environments and Rudol [19] developed a method for using an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) and a UAV for cooperative indoor exploration. Proximity Detection Systems (PDSs) are used in the mining industry for protecting mine workers from striking, pinning, and crushing injuries when they work in close proximity to heavy machines such as continuous mining machines (CMMs). Currently all Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approved PDSs are magnetic field based systems which can be influenced by the presence of wire mesh that is commonly used for supporting roof and ribs in underground coal m ines. In this paper, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) characterize the influence of the mesh on the performance of magnetic PDSs by measuring the magnetic field difference around a CMM caused by the presence of the mesh. The results show that the magnetic fields are generally enhanced by the mesh which causes the PDS detection zones to be increased correspondingly. It was discovered that the fields around the joints of two mesh sections have the greatest enhancement and thus deserve more attention. In addition, it is found that the presence of mesh can also cause a variation in the generator current. The influence of mesh is characterized by the change in the generator current with respect to the distance between the generator and the mesh. It was found that the generator current change caused by the mesh can be significant (on the order of ten) when the mesh is extremely close to the generator (e.g, less than 1 cm) and is negligible when mesh is relatively far (greater than 0.15 m). The findings in this paper can be used to develop guidelines and best practices to mitigate the influence of mesh on PDSs. INTRODUCTION The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires operators of underground coal mines to equip place-changing continuous mining machines (CMMs) with proximity detection systems (PDSs) to protect mine workers from striking, pinning and crushing injuries when they work around these heavy machines. Although a variety of technologies can be implemented for proximity detection, the magnetic-field-based PDS that was originally developed at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown great effectiveness in challenging mining environments and currently all MSHA-approved PDSs are magnetic-field-based systems. As shown in Figure 1, a magnetic PDS typically includes two major components----the magnetic field generator and the Miner Wearable Component (MWC). Magnetic fields are generated by injecting a high electric current into a ferrite-rod antenna sealed in the generator. The magnetic field strength detected by an MWC varies with the distance between the MWC and the generator. In a typical PDS, multiple generators are mounted on different locations of the machine. The relative location/zone of an MWC is determined based on the field strengths from different generators picked by the MWC. Ideally, for a PDS to work properly in the underground, the magnetic fields generated by the different generators should be stable and not vary with the environment, as the system would interpret any variation of the magnetic field as a result of the distance change between the machine and the miner wearing the MWC. In reality, however, this is not always the case since magnetic fields can be altered by a number of environmental factors such as the presence of steel wire mesh that has been widely used in underground coal mines for supporting roof and ribs In this paper, the influence of mesh on the PDS performance is investigated and the magnetic field change caused by the mesh is measured.

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion Project (HRBT), initiated by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), will add two new 1.5-mile TBM bored tunnels to the two existing immersed-tube tunnels between artificial islands, part of the connection between Norfolk and Hampton under the Hampton Roads Harbor in Virginia, USA. The new bored tunnels will be built by Hampton Roads Connector Partners (HRCP), a joint venture of Dragados USA, Vinci Construction, Flatiron Constructors and Dodin Campenon Bernard. This paper covers technical discussions that led HRCP to select a Variable Density TBM to address the challenges of this tunnel project, including but not limited to (i) the diameter of the bore: a 46 feet (14.04 m) diameter machine that constitutes the second-largest TBM ever used in the United States; (ii) shallow ground-cover under the water table; (iii) challenging and varying geology along the alignment, with mixed-face conditions and different types of ground modification zones; and (iv) the high TBM operating pressures required—all these and other challenges in a sensitive marine environment.

This paper defines the elements of a basic economic model for decision-making when considering a methane drainage system for an underground coal mine. A drainage system will require significant capital and operating expenses; hence the decision to utilize drainage must be made carefully. The model outlines the basic structure of decision-making and considers the costs and benefits when the methane is marketed and when the methane is vented to the atmosphere. The effects on mine safety and the dust levels in the mine are also considered, both in a general format and as economic variables. Sources of information for executing this decision-making are provided for an actual mine decision.

As new technologies are introduced to the mining industry, the challenges related to their safe assimilation and the potential changes they bring to mining techniques necessitate adjustments to the current operations. Predictive simulations are critical to understanding unforeseen scenarios and shifting costly changes from the operational stage to the design. The Digital Twin methodology has gained a lot of attention in recent years. Many industries, from manufacturing to engineering and even social sciences, are adopting this approach to understand better the complex systems they are working with. By considering the enormous expenses and risks related to a pilot project, DT could replace that by acting as a prototype in which realistic tests and simulations are carried out with close to zero cost. DT includes a data hub, simulation and analysis tools, and visualization platforms to enable appropriate designs and monitoring plans focusing on unknown areas. A few examples of DT's application in mining include fleet management, Mine-to-Mill optimization (especially D&B), geotechnical digital twin (gDT), etc. When developing regulations, testing the efficiency of the mine layout, design, and magnitude of the restricted area and its access points, human-machine interactions, risk identification, and management processes, examining the efficacy of control systems, and monitoring, DT could help speed up (or completely replace) the process in the physical world.

The stability of shale gas wells drilled through current and future coal reserves can be compromised by ground deformations due to nearby longwall mining. Depending on the longwall-induced rockmass permeability, the high-pressure explosive gas from the damaged well may reach mine workings and overwhelm the mine ventilation systems. This study uses geomechanical models to estimate the rockmass permeability induced by mining. A two-panel longwall model of a deep, 341-m-cover mining site in southwestern Pennsylvania is constructed in 3DEC to explicitly model the rockmass by a Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) technique. Stress-induced fracture apertures and permeabilities are calculated across the model and are validated against permeability measurements. A Fracture Flow Code (FFC) is developed to use these results to predict potential inflow to the mine should a gas well breach occur. One hundred DFN realizations are simulated, and the results show that for a gas pressure of 2.4 MPa, the average of the predicted inflow rates to this deep-cover mine is 0.03 m3 /s, significantly lower than the average inflow of 0.92 m3 /s for a shallow-cover mine (145 m deep) studied in the previous work (Khademian, et al. 2021). Subsurface strata movements and deformations associated with underground longwall mining activities could cause certain influences to subsurface structures and water bodies. Methods have been developed for the prediction of final and dynamic subsurface movements and deformations induced by underground longwall mining operations in the eastern coal fields. Two new types of strata deformation, vertical and total strains, which could be useful in the field of subsidence research in assessing subsidence influences to the subsurface structures and water bodies, have been introduced. Using the subsurface subsidence prediction model, three types of subsidence influences to surface and subsurface hydrological systems have been identified. Attempts have been made to quantify the two types of subsidence influences that could cause water loss and could lower water levels in aquifers.

Modern coal cleaning technologies have allowed coal preparation facilities to become quite efficient at removing sulfur compounds, waste rock and low grade coals from run of mine coal. Up to 50% of the raw mined coal stream may end up as refuse, particularly when the coal originates from longwall mining operations, or is high in partings, rock and impurities. The refuse materials vary from coarse materials removed by physical screening to very fine materials removed by floatation and density separation processes. Coal refuse piles are also known by a variety of other names including "waste dumps", "gob piles" and "slate dumps". The potential hazards of improperly reclaimed refuse include contamination of surface and groundwaters by acidic leachates and runoff, erosion and sedimentation into nearby watersheds, spontaneous combustion, disturbance of topsoil borrow areas, and damage from landslides should large slope failures occur. Many of these problems have been particularly acute for abandoned refuse piles, and modern regulations attempt to minimize the environmental impact of coal refuse disposal operations.

Puerto Rico lies within the remnants of a deformed Cretaceous island arc system in the northeastern Caribbean. The Island can be divided into three broad geologic provinces: the Central Volcanic-Plutonic Province (Lower Cretaceous to middle Eocene), and the Northern and Southern Limestone Provinces (early Oligocene to middle Miocene). Known precious metal deposits are generally small and occur in veins and shear zones within Lower and Upper Cretaceous volcanic and plutonic rocks. Some Tertiary igneous rocks are also mineralized. Selected indications of disseminated lithology-controlled mineralization could represent larger deposits. Associated metals in some deposits include copper, zinc, and lead. At present, tax policies, population density, political outlook, and lack of proven significant precious metal deposits discourage the establishment of a metal mining industry.

Shale gas wells drilled in longwall chain pillars are influenced by longwall mining. Longwall mining on each side of the chain pillars can create overburden movements and induce deformations in gas well casings. If the deformations result in a casing breach, intrusive shale gas could leak into the longwall mine with serious safety consequences. This study concerns five shale gas wells in the chain pillars between two adjacent longwall panels in the Pittsburgh coal seam under a cover depth of 670 ft and a mining height of 7 ft. The gas wells were constructed with typical casing design, but a casing cementing alternative with uncemented production casings was practiced. Four production casings were uncemented, and one production casing was unintentionally cemented with good quality cement to a 535-ft depth and low-quality cement stringers from a 444- to 535-ft depth. The longwall faces passed by the shale gas wells as each adjacent longwall panel retreated. Production casings were surveyed by a multi-finger caliper after each panel was mined. No deformation was detected in the four uncemented production casings, but small deformations were detected in the partially cemented production casing. The maximum measured deformation in the cemented production casing was 0.05 in. after first panel mining and 0.06 in. after second panel mining. The casing deformations were also predicted by the FLAC3D model set up on site-specific overburden geology. The predicted deformations were in good agreement with the measurements in terms of deformation locations and magnitudes. All five shale gas wells resumed normal production after being temporarily plugged during the period of mine-by. This study provides a successful demonstration of the effectiveness of a casing cementing alternative for decoupling production and intermediate casing, and thus minimizing the influence of longwall mining in the shale gas wells drilled through longwall chain pillars.

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated the impact of potential shale gas well breaches and subsequent gas inflow on selected mine ventilation systems of operating longwall panels using a 1:30 scaled Longwall Instrumented Aerodynamic Model (LIAM) and Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as a tracer gas. A series of tests were performed at 340, 400, and 500 cfm inflow levels utilizing different mine ventilation scenarios. Results suggest that the breached gas can be diluted to meet statutory levels when the longwall panel is adequately ventilated. The results enhance the understanding of the gas inflow and mine ventilation system interaction and provide critical information to the industry and regulatory agencies for improving miners’ safety.

Reserve depletion in Central Appalachia is continuously creating unique ground conditions for underground coal mines with many of these difficult environments directly attributable to multiple seam mining and/or deeper overburdens. While many empirical studies have been performed in an effort to improve understanding of these problems along with potentially improving safety and extraction, many of the difficulties encountered lie outside of the normal realm of expected behavior. This is often the case when mining in bump prone ground, where additional concerns are introduced and design buffers are warranted. The boundary element software LaModel was used to study three bump events in a deep-cover, multiple-seam reserve located in Harlan county in the Kentucky region of Central Appalachia. This region is notoriously bump prone due to significant areas of deep cover, the presence of strong to massive lithology (such as sandstone), and an extensive history of underground mining that increases the probability of multiple seam interactions. Multiple seam interactions are best understood with respect to site-specific parameters, including both the geological and geometrical components of interburden, overburden and mine workings. Initially, empirical-based approaches (ARMPS/AMSS) were used when attempting to back-analyze the bump events. However, it was recognized that a more detailed investigation was necessary to understand the fundamental causes/conditions associated with the bump events. Consequently, the LaModel study resulted in a mine-specific calibration method for the reserve. With this method in place, enhanced bump prediction throughout the reserve is expected, such that the stability, recovery and safety of future mining may be improved.

"INTRODUCTION Conventional steel bar reinforcement is used in many tunnel linings to provide high flexural and tensile load resistance. These Reinforced Concrete (RC) tunnel linings may suffer flexural cracking during service or, in the case of precast concrete segments, during production, handling, or installation. Cracks can lead to corrosion of steel reinforcement, so limits are placed on maximum acceptable crack widths to reduce the likelihood of corrosion during the intended design life (AFTES, 2013; MC2010, 2012). However, the relatively light level of reinforcement used in many applications can result in quite wide in-service crack widths, so either additional steel bar reinforcement is required to limit maximum crack widths, or fibers can be included to control crack widths. Numerous investigations have been undertaken into the efficacy of including steel fibers to reduce crack widths in conventionally reinforced members (Stang and Aarre, 1992; Abrishami and Mitchell, 1997; Bischoff, 2003; Dupont and Vandevalle, 2003; and Jansson et al, 2010), but steel fibers suffer the problem that they are at least as sensitive to corrosion at cracks as steel bars and therefore have similarly tight limits placed on acceptable crack widths (AFTES, 2013). An alternative means of maintaining narrow crack limits in RC members has therefore been sought. The current investigation was instigated following an observation that theories promoted as an explanation for the ability of steel fibers to reduce crack widths in reinforced concrete flexural members (Deluce et al, 2014) do not depend on the material composition of the fibers used but instead depend primarily on the tensile stress generated by the fibers across cracks. Since it is known that macro-synthetic fibers are capable of equaling the post-crack tensile capacity of steel fibers, it has been hypothesized that macro-synthetic fibers are also capable of reducing crack widths in reinforced concrete flexural members but with the added advantage that macro-synthetic fibers are completely immune to the effects of corrosion. Use of macro-synthetic fibers to reduce maximum crack widths in reinforced concrete flexural members subject to aggressive environmental exposure is more rational than use of steel fibers because steel fibers are very sensitive to the corrosive effects of environmental exposure at cracks. The current investigation was therefore undertaken to explore the potential use of macro-synthetic fibers to reduce maximum crack widths in reinforced concrete members subject to flexure. Barchip BC54 fibers were selected as they are one of the most widely used and competitive high performance macro-synthetic fibers currently available."

The ability of open pit mines to steepen overall final wall angles allows significant cost reductions as a result of reduced waste movement requirements. Final wall angles are principally controlled by three factors: geological conditions; hydrological conditions; and wall control blasting practices. The first of these factors is not controllable by the mine operator, the second can be influenced to some degree, but the last one certainly can be controlled, hence the current interest in final wall blasting practice at many mining companies. This paper discusses common blasting techniques employed to steepen final pit walls and outlines the attractiveness of moving from small hole high cost systems to the use of full size production drills as a means of reducing wall control blast costs. Attempts to make this change have been limited at many mines by the physical size of the drills and their inability to reverse drill. In the past, pres pi it, pre-shear or trim holes have had to be drilled vertically, at considerable distance from the upper bench toe, with the result that inter-berm face stability is reduced and final wall angles have to be made somewhat more shallow than desirable. The paper concludes with a description of how these problems can be overcome by utilizing the new Bucyrus 39R which has the capability of drilling at a ?15 degree angle underneath the machine. It is concluded that the resulting wall control blast designs will offer large mines improved final wall angles with resulting significant overall cost reductions.

Aggregate producers nationwide well recognize the numerous problems often faced in securing local approval to open and operate new gravel pits and rock quarries. Similar problems are faced in Colorado, but this region also presents certain political, social, and geological complexities that have become particularly troublesome in the last 10 years. The gravity of the local permitting dilemma can be related directly to the worsening supply-demand imbalance for aggregates in the state's most populated area, the Front Range urban corridor, particularly the Denver metropolitan area. The drive to develop crushed-rock reserves to supplement dwindling alluvial supplies and to meet increasing regional growth demands was somewhat predictable but perhaps more a "last resort" alternative forced onto producers by a hesitant and often apathetic government.

The historic Getchell property is currently being mined from the Getchell Main Underground workings, a foot wall extension of the Getchell open pit deposits along the Getchell fault. Drift-and-fill techniques are used to extract the ore through a ramp access. The adjacent Turquoise Ridge deposit is currently under development via two vertical shafts. Together, the two mines will continue to provide feed to the Getchell's 3,200 tpd mill/autoclave circuit, taking Getchell Gold from its current production rate of 200,000 ounces (Au) per annum, to over 400,000 ounces (Au) per annum by 1999.

BHP Iron Ore initiated research programs in January of 1995 to develop long term plans for decommissioning of the waste rock material at their Mt. Whaleback operation. More than 2 billion tonnes of waste rock were deposited during the past 30 years. Ultimately, the operators will deposit a total of approximately 5 billion tonnes in waste rock dumps constructed near the open pit. The Mt. Whaleback operation is located in a semi-arid climate adjacent to Newman, Western Australia, approximately 1200km north-northeast of Perth, Western Australia. The primary research program includes the development of technology for the long term performance of the waste rock dumps with respect to vegetation, slope stability, surface runoff, erosion, and water infiltration. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of a cover system to prevent water infiltration to the underlying waste rock. A laboratory program and the soil-atmosphere modelling completed to design the horizontal field test plots are described. The construction of the horizontal surface field test plots are discussed together with the field instruments installed to monitor performance. The key components of the instrumentation program are the design and installation of large scale field lysimeters to measure the unsaturated flow of moisture into the waste rock from the base of the cover layer. The cover system is designed to maximize infiltration during wet periods for subsequent evapo-transpiration while minimizing surface runoff. The result is a near zero net infiltration to the underlying waste material. A key feature of the design is the use of pit run waste material as the cover material. Monitoring is in progress and will continue for at least two annual wet/dry cycles. The optimum cover system should minimize the net infiltration of water to the underlying waste rock while maintaining physical and ecological integrity for long term performance.
