"Grooved cast Pb-Ag anodes are used by some zinc refineries to improve current efficiency. It was found that the manganese oxide scale formed on a grooved Pb-0.75% Ag anode consists mainly of MnO2, which occurs characteristically in rhythmically banded colloform structures and adheres to a layer of ""Pb02+PbS04"" that oxidized from the anode. The relatively homogeneous and nearly fracture-free morphology of the ""Pb02+PbS04"" layer suggests the relatively uniform corrosion of the anode. Deposition of the Mn oxide initially follows the contours of the anode surface, but the grooves eventually become filled with Mn oxide and gypsum. Hydrous Mn oxides and amorphous Mn oxides are believed to be also present in the manganese oxide scale. Tiny particles of PbS04 and SrS04, together with gypsum, other impurities and micro-pores, tend to concentrate in the grooves.IntroductionManganese is a common impurity in hydrometallurgical zinc processing circuits. The manganese originates from sphalerite (Zn,Fe,Mn)S and from the Mn02 added to the leaching circuit to oxidize ferrous ions [1]. Manganese in the sphalerite follows Zn through the roasting, leaching and purification processes, and is present as Mn(II) in the purified ZnS04 solution. The Mn in the added Mn02 is reduced to Mn(II) during the oxidation of the ferrous ions present in the leach solutions. In both cases, MnS04 is generated, and the MnS04 accumulates in the purified solution. In the cellhouse, Zn is plated at the cathodes to produce high quality metal. The Mn(II) is partly oxidized at the anode surface to Mn(IV), and the Mn(IV) precipitates as a scale on the surface of the anode and as a sludge on the bottom of the electrolysis cells. The presence of a thin layer of manganese oxide scale on the surface of the Pb-Ag anode can minimize the corrosion of lead and, accordingly, reduce the contamination of the electrodeposited zinc. However, a heavy manganese scale build-up can cause ""staining"" of the zinc deposits and reduced current efficiencies. Consequently, periodic anode cleaning to remove excess manganese oxide scale is carried out routinely in commercial operations."

In combination with various physical and chemical methods also electrochemical techniques are most frequently used to improve the recovery of metals from aqueous dilute process streams or effluents e.g. in electroplating, metal finishing, mining and metallurgical plants. To insure cathodic metal recoveries with favorable current efficiency and high throughputs per unit of cell volume seve¬ral types of electrolysis cells have been developed comprising extended electrode surface areas and/or intensive electrolyte. agitation. The practical experiences with these units indicate especially for the electrolytic recovery of metals whose values are high, that the treatment cost permits profitable operations with relativly short payback periods for the units. Anodic reactions can be utilized for the removal of undesired anion contents or buildups of impurities. Appropriate combinations of these recovery methods are used to improve the versatility and the overall economy. Industrial applications reveal their potentional as addidtive techniques for existing processes to reduce the metal content of effluents to values that meet the guide lines of environmental legislation whereas integrated in-operation recovery methods are nowadays increasingly introduced to approach nearly close-loop operations.

"An investigation has been conducted to describe the effect of grain refiner (e.g.,Ti) or modifier (e.g., Sr) on the microstructure of an Al-11.3wt%Si alloy produced by the Ohno horizontal continuous casting process using a heated mold so as to obtain directional solidification at high cooling rate of 300 to 2000°C/s. Experimental results demonstrated that the directionality of the primary a grain was promoted by the addition of0.2 to 0.4%Ti or by the addition of0.02%Sr, whereas the addition of0.6%Ti suppressed this directionality. Feathery a grains were promoted by the addition of 0.2%Ti, while these feathery a grains were suppressed when over 0.4%Ti (grain refinement) or when 0.02%Sr was added. The addition of Ti also resulted in increased coarsening of the eutectic Si in these Al-1 l.3wt%Si alloys.IntroductionThe mechanical properties of conventionally cast Al-Si alloys can be enhanced through judicious control of the casting parameters, by the addition of grain refiners (e.g., Ti) and by the addition of eutectic modifiers (e.g., Sr).[1-3] The Ohno continuous casting process[4-5] uses a heated mold (maintained at a temperature above the alloy liquidus temperature) to produce a casting with a mirror surface free of shrinkage defects. A microorganism will function as a mineral flocculant if it is to some degree hydrophobic and can attach itself in some manner, such as through electrostatic interaction, to the fine mineral particles to be flocculated. The present paper concerns the use of a hydrophobic bacterium, Mycobacterium phlei, as flocculating agent for phosphate slimes. Experimental work on the flocculation of phosphate slimes and of dolomite and clay mineral suspensions was performed. It was found that M. phlei functions as an excellent flocculant for a dolomitic slime but does not function as well for mineral suspensions where large quantities of the solids are finer in size than the approximately 1 µm size of the bacterium.

The importance of the processing of secondary resources such as solid industrial wastes and liquid effluents as well as byroducts for the recovery of the associated metal values hardly needs any elaboration. Such processing contributes in no small measure.towards the augmentation of the availability and the supply position of resources. As an added benefit, it leads to a reduction in environmental pollution caused by the undesirable waste materials. As some typical examples of secondary resources in the Indian scenario, mention' can be made of spent catalysts, metal/alloy scrap, ash, consumed batteries, flue dust, slag, sludge and slime, pickling solutions, spent acids; plating rinse solutions, spent etchants, waste water from synthetic fibre manufacture and from tanneries etc. These wastes constitute a source of a variety of non ferrous metals. In the processing of secondary resources like these, the techniques of hydrometallurgy such as solvent extraction play a pivotal role. This paper outlines the efforts made to use solvent extraction to recover(1) base metals. such as copper, zinc, nickel and cobalt from a number of secondary resources like cake, and sludge(2) refractory metals like molybdenum and vanadium from sulphidic byproducts and spent catalyst and (3:) nuclear metal like uranium from phosphoric acid. In the case of base metals, process flowsheet involving the use of acidic extractants such as DEHPA and PC88A have been optimised. The problem of iron removal from the leach liquor, "which influences the metal recovery process significantly, has drawn a special emphasis. hi the case of refractory metals, basic extractants .like Alamine 336 has been pressed into service to produce kilogramme. quantities of pure salts of molybdenum and vanadium, Finally, the paper gives a brief account of plant experience in recovering uranium from phosphoric acid, using 'a solvent system comosed of DEHPA and TOPO.

The effect of variables on the gold extraction with ammonium thiosulfate was investigated on sponge gold and ore samples. The Effects of CUS04, (NH4hS203, NH40H, (N~hS04' pH, stirring speed and retention on gold leaching rate and thiosulfate oxidation (consumption) have been studied. Almost 100% of gold was leached from sponge gold and over 96% from ore sample at optimum conditions. Trioctylmethyl ammonium chloride was used to recover gold from thiosulfate pregnant solution. It was found that more than 99% of gold was recovered by the extractant diluted with n-octane at 01 A ratio of 1: 1 without the re-adjustment of pH or others. Also, the gold cementation was conducted without de-aeration by using zinc, copper and aluminum powders. The result indicated that the gold was effectively recovered from a solution of low ammonia and copper concentrations and higher thiosulfate concentration. The gold recovery process by using ammonium thiosulfate is an environmental friendly method comparing to conventional cyanidation process.

Acousto Ultrasonic-Echo (AU-E) is a technique developed to provide accurate measurements of the refractory lining wear in operating smelters based on the principles of stress wave propagation. The objective of the system is to provide feedback for the continuous optimization of the overall smelter operation. In some cases, the AU-E refractory lining measurements have allowed clients to extend their smelter campaigns and operate safely for several years beyond their planned reline schedule. In other cases, AU-E results inform clients of serious issues within their furnace allowing them to shut down their smelters ahead of predicted failures and possible disasters. This paper presents the results of several smelter AU-E inspections of the hearth and sidewall. These case studies demonstrate how the AU-E results were used to positively affect the smelter operation.

Calcium and lithium gallides have been synthesized by powder metallurgy techniques in the stoichiometries that can be used as reduction alloys for the Rocky Flats Plant Salt-Scrub (SS) process. The SS process is performed to recover valuable metals from salts generated in the electrorefining and the molten salt extraction processes. Combustion synthesis has been optimized for variable heating rates up to the reaction ignition temperature and for green densities of the powder compacts in terms of the ignition temperature and the exothermic heating of the product in an effort to develop LiGa and CaGaz alloys. The problems arising from the melting point and density differences of calcium, lithium and gallium have also been studied. The SS alloy compositions were produced by mixing, pressing and sintering the metal-powders. The efficiency of the intermetallic alloy, Ca-17 wt. pct. Ga, as a reductant and the effect of gallium on salt clean- up has been discussed. Measurement of actinide recovery has been studied with cerium as the surrogate for the actinide metal. The development of an alloy for SS reduces a major contaminated waste disposal problem besides recovering the valuable reactive metal.

"Regeneration of HCl from chloride solutions is commercially practiced by high temperature (800-900 °C) pyrohydrolysis associated with high energy consumption and capital cost. As an alternative to pyrohydrolysis a novel low temperature ( <200 °C) non-autoclave hydrolytic process has been studied in this research work, which comprises two steps. In the first step, ferrous chloride is oxidized by oxygen at 1;150 °C, followed by hydrolytic decomposition of ferric chloride to coarse hematite particles and superazeotropic hydrochloric acid (8-9M) operated at approximately 180 °C. This paper provides a summary of the laboratory results related to both oxidation and hydrolysis and presents a newly designed conceptual process flowsheet.IntroductionRecovery of base, noble and rare metals from ores and secondary materials (slags, dusts, residues) by chloride-based hydrometallurgical processes holds a lot of promise if a low cost HCl process becomes available. This is particularly so due to the high activity of HCl or more accurately activity of hydrogen ion [1] in concentrated chloride media and the formation of chlorocomplexes allowing for effective leaching under atmospheric leaching conditions and simultaneous ease of metal separation. However, during leaching significant amount of iron, which is associated with most of ores and secondary materials, goes into the solution. Hence, the obtained leach solution has to be treated to convert iron chlorides into easily filterable iron oxide and simultaneously produce concentrated hydrochloric acid. Apparently the critical operation of these processes is the regeneration of the lixiviant (HCl). Currently in the industry, its regeneration is accomplished by high capital and intensive pyrohydrolysis which operates at 700- 900 °C. Aimed at lowering the operational cost of pyrohydrolysis a process called PORI [2] was developed and tested in pilot plant scale in the 1970s for the purpose of treatment of pickle liquors without, however, resulting in industrial application."

The pseudo-binary phase diagram of the cuspidine (3CaO2?SiO2?CaF2) - CaF2 system has been studied by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). To prevent fluorine loss in the form of a HF gas by a reaction of CaF2 with water vapor at elevated temperatures, the equilibrium experiments were conducted with the sample hermetically sealed in a platinum tube. By employing this technique, it was successfully revealed that cuspidine exists as a stable phase and congruently melts at 1684 ± 1 K, and the cuspidine - CaF2 system presents a simple eutectic type of phase diagram, of which eutectic temperature has been estimated to be around 1540 K, corresponding to the composition of 40 mass% 3CaO?2SiO2 - 60 mass% CaF2?

Oil -bearing metal sulfide sludges produced in treatment of an industrial wastewater, which includes plating wastes, have yielded to treatment by electrooxidation and hydrogen peroxide processes. The oxidation can be controlled to be mild enough to avoid decomposition of the organic phase while oxidizing the sulfides to sulfates. The pH is controlled to near neutral conditions where iron, aluminum and chromium(II1) precipitate as hydrous oxides. Other metals, such as lead and barium, may be present as sulfate precipitates with limited solubility, while metals such as nickel and cadmium would be present as complexed ions in a sulfate solution. The oxidations were found to proceed smoothly, without vigorous reaction; heat liberation was minimal.

"For a plain-weave Nicalon ™ fiber fabric-reinforced silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic composite, little attentation has been paid to the effect of fabric stacking sequence on its mechanical behavior. In this paper, fiber-fabric stacking sequence effects on the elastic stress distributions, ceramic matrix-cracking stress, effective elastic moduli, and flexural strengths of laminated flexural test bars are quantified. A quantification model is established based on the combination of classical laminated plate theories and a fiber undulation model developed by Chou et al. A FORTRAN program is compiled to implement the modeling, which can be run in a SUN work station. The mechanical performance of a continuous fiber-reinforced ceramic-matrix composite (CFCC) with a [0/30/60] lay-up was analyzed and predicted. The variation in the fiber-fabric stacking sequence can vary the elastic stress distributions along the thickness direction of specimens, magnitude of ceramic matrix-cracking stress, effective elastic moduli of the laminate, and crack initiation sites as well as fracture modes. Moreover, all these factors contribute to scatter in flexural strengths of the CFCC.I. IntroductionWith enhanced fracture toughness and the ability of non-catastrophic (graceful) failure behavior, CFCCs are currently under evaluation for high-temperature structural applications in heat exchangers, combustors, hot-gas filters, boilers components, first walls and high-heat flux surfaces gas turbines, space vehicles and nuclear reactors.[1-8] Extensive applications of CFCCs by industry are still hampered by an insufficient understanding of the mechanical behavior, and sometimes, the lack of a well-developed and widely accepted design philosophy, in addition to the high-production costs."

This paper presents results of bench scale laboratory evaluation of a processes developed by FESI and Brookhaven National Laboratories for the extraction and recovery of Pb and other heavy metals from incinerator ash which was subsequently modified by FESI for the extraction and recovery of Pb from soils excavated from a FESI client scrap yard and battery breaking operation facility. The specific waste matrix presented within the paper is a battery acid contaminated surficial soil at 0" to 12" depth. The extraction method was found to be highly successful on the bench scale in generating a final post-extracted soil matrix which passed TCLP Pb regulatory limits and retained minimal Pb after aggressive extraction application. The paper findings at this time are brief, as a majority of the research results are currently being compiled and additional efforts are underway based upon initial screening findings.

"Carefully planned laboratory test programs provide valuable data regarding the amenability of low grade gold ores to heap leaching. The most common laboratory test is the column leach test. The overwhelming problem associated with this type of test is the limit on the test column height. Most laboratories use a three (3) meter (10 foot) high column as a standard test due to building ceiling limitations, sample size limitations, etc. This paper presents a case study in which an ore sample was tested in a 1.5 meter, a three meter, and a six meter high column to determine the effect of column height on the test results. Other important factors such as sample preparation protocol, preliminary bottle roll testing to determine appropriate crush size, column diameter requirements, and leach solution analyses, are also discussed.IntroductionColumn leach testing has been used for years by many laboratories to determine the amenability of low grade precious metals bearing ores to heap leaching. However, the test work can be compromised by poor planning, misinterpretation of results, and extrapolation of data beyond the reasonable boundaries of the experiment. Preliminary test work should be performed prior to column testing. This preliminary work provides valuable information regarding the response of the ore to cyanidation and aids in the design of the column tests.The sample should be screened into various size fractions prior to testing. The fractions are assayed to determine the gold content of each size fraction and of the overall sample. The most valuable preliminary test is the bottle roll cyanidation test which is usually performed on five kilograms of coarse sample in a large rolling bottle which can accept material up to 50 millimeters top size. The residue from this test is screened at different sizes to determine the distribution of unleached gold in the residue. Comparison of the gold distribution in the leach residue with the distribution of gold in the feed at the same size intervals provides an indication of the appropriate crush size for the sample. The overall gold extraction from the sample at the crush size tested is also determined from these data. Lime and cyanide requirements can also be estimated from this test. The viscosity of the bottle roll pulp and the size distribution of the feed and leach residue can also suggest whether agglomeration of the ore will be required prior to column testing. Ores which contain significant amounts of clays (greater than 5 percent) will generally require agglomeration to prevent plugging of the test column."

Copper sulfate pentahydrate is recovered from the spent etchant waste stream of a printed circuit board manufacturing facility by cooling crystallization. The fluidized bed crystallizer contains submerged cooling surfaces which are bathed in a stream of air. The air bubbles provide agitation which improve heat transfer, reduce fouling and maintain crystals in suspension. The recently patented apparatus (US 5,523,064) has advantages when compared to a conventional surface cooled crystallizer including capital cost, ease of operation and production of larger more uniform crystals

Long-term thermal stability of ionic liquids is essential for reliable performance of ionic liquids in any engineering applications. TGA studies were carried out on a series of ionic liquids with different cations and anions such as 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C4mim]Cl), 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C6mim]Cl), 1-hexyl-3¬methylimidazolium tetrafluoborate ([C6mim]BF4), 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C6mim]PF6), 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([Csmim]PF6), and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluromethanesulflonyl)imide ([C4mim][Tf2N]). The short-term thermal stability of ionic liquids was evaluated by measuring the onset temperature of decomposition of ionic liquids, and the long-term thermal stability of ionic liquids was also evaluated by weight loss of ionic liquids over a long period of time at various temperatures. The experimental results showed that the long-term thermal stability of ionic liquids decreased with increasing temperature and was significantly lower than the onset temperature of decomposition of ionic liquids.

Bacterial oxidation of a low-grade sulfide gold ore was investigated in order to enhance leaching of gold. The experiments were carried out in columns using mixed cultures of Thiobacillus ferrooxidansisolated from the ore. Fractions with different screen analyses were oxidized in two regimes - one pass of the solution and circulating, solution. Constant temperature and flow-rate of the percolating solution were maintained during the experiments. A correlation between the concentrations of copper and iron in the solution leaving the columns and pH and Eh values was observed. The effect of bacterial activity was proved by means of thiourea and cyanide leaching of the oxidized ore.

All cyanide species are considered toxic and can be found predominantly in industrial effluents generated by metallurgical operations. For example, cyanide&apos;s strong affinity for metals makes it favorable as an agent for metal finishing and treatment and as a lixivant for metal leaching, particularly gold. These technologies are environmentally sound but require safeguards to prevent water contamination. Various methods of cyanide remediation by separation and destruction are available, but certain methods are more effective than others depending on the cyanide species being remediated. Photolytic destruction is regarded as the one technique that is independent of the cyanide species involved. The destruction of various cyanide species by several photolytic techniques has been investigated for the past few years. A literature survey suggests heterogeneous photocatalysis with anatase (TiO,) should behave similarly to homogeneous photolysis with hydrogen peroxide (H,O,) since proposed reaction mechanisms for both processes involve hydroxyl radicals. However, experimental evidence on a suite of cyanide species suggests otherwise. A new mechanism for the photocatalytic destruction of cyanides, especially SAD species, is therefore proposed.

Direct sulphuric acid leaching of nickeliferous limonites is the process of choice to recover nickel and cobalt from equatorially located lateritic ores. These ores are rich-in-iron (-45 wt%) existing in the form of goethite enriched with nickel. The merit of this process is due to its high nickel selectivity because of simultaneous iron separation and acid regeneration. Under acid leaching conditions (-250 to 270°C) iron follows an acid dissolution-hydrolytic precipitation path yielding a very low concentration level depending on temperature and acidity of the final leach liquor. The primary precipitation product of iron is hematite which also forms as a scale on reactor internals along with co-existing aluminum. In this paper, an overview of the behaviour of iron solid products under process conditions is made. The evolution of goethite to hematite transformation, as well as the role of iron in reactor scale production, are studied using SEM/EDX characterization techniques.
