Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. Phases of the Ir sub-group are present either as inclusions in or interstitially to chromite and are unaffected by (or only altered in situ during) hydrothermal processes. By contrast, almost all phases of the Pd sub-group are located in a secondary textural setting - in fractures in chromite or between fragments of brecciated chromite. The different settings indicate that the mineralisation episodes were associated with magmatic and hydrothermal stages respectively. The presence of an included Pd-group mineral in a hydrothermally Pd-group mineralised chromitite sample suggests that the hydrothermal Pd-group minerals were at least partly derived by remobilisation from magmatic deposits in the chromitite pod. These observations indicate that Pd-group elements are more mobile than Ir-group elements under hydrothermal conditions and point to the potential for hydrothermal platinum and palladium mineralisation in favourable environments

This report presents a method of utilizing the Coulomb strength criteria for estimating the strength and stability of pillars and pit slopes containing planes of weakness. It is assumed that the Coulomb theory, as a special case of the Mohr envelope, is a satisfactory first approximation of failure in uniaxial compression or triaxial loading with low lateral loads. Accepting this assumption for brittle materials, an expression for the strength decrease of rock pillars containing a plane of weakness or fracture at any angle of orientation is derived. As few as six samples (three solid cores and three fractured cores at a failure-oriented angle) are required for testing uniaxially and triaxially to statistically determine the coefficients of friction and the shear strengths of both the solid rock and the fracture plane and the range of failure angles of the fracture plane. Interpretation of the data shows that the mean normal stress and maximum shear stress technique of analyzing the data is superior for solid core and that shear and normal stress values using angles of failure should be used for fractured specimens with failure-oriented angles. Plots of either the strength or strength ratios against fracture angles obtained from oriented drill core samples give a useful first approximation of strength decrease due to fracture. Using the same test conditions for both fractured and unfractured material increases the validity of the tests.

This paper documents a field survey using long-range terrestrial digital photogrammetry at the Palabora open-pit mine, South Africa, for multi-scale characterization of rock mass discontinuities. Stereomodels covering the entire mine were generated based on photographs taken from a distance of 1600m across the pit, using a series of f=20-400mm lenses. Details on the methodology used and its accuracy are discussed. Preliminary results on discontinuity orientation, persistence and intensity are presented, highlighting the effect of observation scale. The potential uses of long-range terrestrial digital photogrammetry in open-pit mine and large natural rock slope environments is emphasized. The use of an f=400mm lens from distances larger than 1.5km may represent an important step forward in the geotechnical characterization of inaccessible remote rock faces.

Durante o processo de desfosforação, as principais fases sólidas formadas na escória são o silicato dicálcico (2CaO.SiO2) e tricálcio (3CaO.SiO2), o fosfato tricálcico (3CaO.P2O5), e o 3CaOSiO2.3CaOP2O5 formado pela oxidação do fósforo em solução sólida com o silicato tricálcio. O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar a formação destes compostos e avaliar a influência das fases sólidas e líquidas formadas na eficiência da desfosforação. Foram analisadas diferentes composições de escórias industriais com diferentes teores de CaO e FeO. As fases presentes na escória e a sua viscosidade foram determinadas pela termodinâmica computacional utilizando o software FactSage (usando os bancos de dados GTOXID e FTOXID) e os resultados destas análises foram relacionados com a eficiência de desfosforação. A eficiência da desfosforação também foi relacionada com os diferentes modelos de relação de partição do fósforo (Lp) disponíveis na literatura.

The Karangahake deposit was the second largest producer of gold-silver bullion in the Hauraki Goldfield, New Zealand. New mapping of a 2 + 3 km (6 km2) area demonstrates that hydrothermal alteration surrounds productive veins. Wallrocks proximal to veins are intensely altered and alteration decreases toward the margin of the system.   At Karangahake, distinct zonation of adularia, calcite, epidote, illite and illite-smectite surrounds gold-bearing lodes with unaltered rocks containing magnetite and plagioclase occurring on the margins. Adularia, illite, illite-smectite, and calcite zonation defines hydrothermal alteration extending 2 km to the east of productive lodes. Epidote and adularia zonation occurs proximal to veins. The adularia zone compares well to potassium/thorium studies conducted in the area. Illite zonation is well developed to the east of the veins grading into interstratified illite-smectite containing 5 to 40 per cent smectite 1.5 km from the Maria Lode. Calcite is restricted to the east of the study area occurring in 18 per cent off surface samples. Less altered rocks containing plagioclase and magnetite occur distal to veins. The magnetite occurrence compares well to aeromagnetic studies conducted in the area.   Adularia and coexisting adularia and albite indicate the host rocks were highly permeable. Epidote, illite, illite-smectite and previous fluid inclusion evidence implies temperatures graded from >240¦C in the core of the system to approximately 150¦C on the periphery. The alteration association of quartz, adularia, calcite, pyrite, chlorite, illite and illite-smectite reflects a near-neutral to weakly alkaline water. Calcite occurrence and the absence of zeolite imply the fluid contained significant dissolved CO2.

Three conventional uplift tests and 12 Rapid Pile Load Tests (RLT) were performed on total of fifteen 16-inch square pre-cast concrete driven piles at a test site in Emeryville California in December of 2000. The uplift tests were performed in accordance with ASTM standards, and the RLTs were performed using a FUNDEX RLT. The RLT is carried out by dropping a mass of 25-tons on top of the pile, thereby inducing a force that is measured by a load cell. An optical lens records the vertical deflection of LED's that are mounted on the pile. Ultimate uplift and compression capacities of each of the fifteen piles were determined using the Davisson method. Soil parameters were calibrated by back-calculation (cohesion and internal angle of friction) using both the results of conventional uplift load versus deflection curve, as well as the results of the triaxial compression tests. A two-dimensional finite difference model including soil elements, and structural elements representing the test pile was setup using the computer program Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLAC). FLAC was used to simulate both the uplift as well as the RLT. Strength increase of cohesive material was also accounted for in the analysis. Numerically simulated and theoretically computed pile capacity curves and axial deformation variation with applied load curves are in close agreement to the observed curve during the field test. Conclusions are made from this test site regarding the factors influencing results of RLT.

A technical and economic evaluation of the potential for improving mining productivity through the use of underreamers in blastholes, specifically in relation to Minnesota taconite, Arizona surface copper and in situ mining operations is presented. Included are (1) a review of the drilling and blasting practices presently being used, (2) a discussion of current underreamer technology. (3) the presentation of a general economic cost model for underreaming, (4) the application of the model to surface taconite, surface copper and in situ mining, and (5) a summary discussion including required performance specifications, potential overall benefits, and recommendations for further development.

The purpose of the study was to demonstrate the effect of positive reinforcement, specifically, social reinforcement (SR), on the frequency of eye, hand, and back injuries at four experimental salt mines. Injury data was collected from January, 1976, for the prePOMOST period and from the onset of training to September, 1978, for the post-POMOST period. All data was collected on a month-by-month basis. For the training period approximately 100 managers and supervisors from five plants were trained in the use of positive reinforcement for occurrences of "safe behavior." Each supervisor was also provided manuals and other supportive materials. Additionally, following training, all supervisors were provided some coaching experience to keep the knowledge and capabilities gained during training from being extinguished. The analysis showed significant injury reductions in two sites and no injury reductions in the other two. When the injury data was corrected for the additional man hours expended in the postPOMOST period, a third site showed reduction in injuries. Similar findings were shown when the experimental sites were compared to other sites in the industry. The results were interpreted to support the hypothesis that the application of social reinforcement is related to a reduction in injuries.

Hydraulic fracturing to precondition the orebody to enhance rock mass cavability is gaining acceptance in underground cave mining applications. Assisting cavability is becoming important as an increasing number of cave mines are being implemented in hard, deep and competent rock masses where clamping stresses are higher and cave column heights may be in excess of 1000 m. Propagating large caves to surface in such conditions can be challenging as risks such as slowed propagation and air gaps can develop during the process.Underground-based hydraulic fracturing is routinely used at Cadia East as a means of preconditioning the orebody to assist in cave propagation, fragmentation and seismicity reduction. This paper presents a summary of a surface-based hydraulic fracture program that was successfully implemented to assist in the propagation of the Cadia East Panel Cave 1 (CE-PC1) cave to surface through competent overlying rock masses. In this case study, the propagation of the CE-PC1 cave slowed as the cave grew past 750 m in height, initiating a Trigger Action Response Plan regarding the cave propagation rate. Surface-based hydraulic fracturing was subsequently used to stimulate the cave to propagate through the final 450 m to surface. ?Intelligent mine? conjures up a futuristic image of unmanned extractors and loaders working in harsh conditions in a remote lunar landscape. The promise of increasing mine fleet productivity and solving the problem labor shortages in mining regions can certainly be achieved today through remote controlled extraction and automated hauling. The technology is available and it doesn?t seem to be so much science fiction when Google?s self-driving cars hurtle down the freeway. ?Intelligent mining,? on the other hand, implies the application of information technology at every phase of the mining value chain, from exploration and geological modeling to equipment, operations and maintenance, and logistics and transportation. These are really industry-specific, enterprise-class software solutions focused on using information technology to support the business processes of mining and make them more efficient and effective. Overlaying the physical world with the digital or virtual world enables us to model and simulate our assets, giving us the ability to effectively design, build, and ultimately optimize the performance and reliability of our assets throughout the lifecycle. The digital asset, often a 3D model, is created initially during the engineering and construction phase, and is handed over to the operator before the mine goes into operation. Combined with geospatial or geographic information systems, the operator has a complete digital representation of the physical world, which forms the foundation for risk and performance management, along with compliance and regulatory reporting. Laser scanning and positioning technology can be used to create point clouds ? information models consisting of millions of data points ? which enable the visualization and representation of the ?as-operated? reality. But consider that once the mine is in operation, it throws off an endless stream of data in the form of performance and condition data from sensors and monitoring devices on fixed and mobile assets through networks, servers, and services. This ?big data? can be processed and analyzed to spot trends, help predict events, and formulate reliability strategies as early as the design stage (e.g., reliability-centered design). ?Intelligent mining? implies that massive amounts of data augment the reality of the physical mine, plant, and equipment. This embedded intelligence can be used to optimize operational efficiency, increase asset availability and utilization, improve safety and environmental integrity, and maximize return on investment. Lastly, the sweet spot for intelligent mining is seen in the convergence of consumerization and industrialization. The application of ?consumer? technologies that we use every day on our iPhones and Android devices, such as cameras, motion sensors, and positioning in an industrial context, are producing ?immersive? experiences. Overlaying the digital world on the physical world and connecting them accurately through intelligent positioning results in ?intelligent infrastructure,? which is safer and more sustainable. The use of soil nailing has grown steadily in the UK over the last 15 years and it has recently become more popular in the Republic of Ireland. This paper presents three soil nailing temporary works case histories where the technique has been used to support steep excavations in difficult ground conditions. It demonstrates the effectiveness of soil nailing when applied in appropriate conditions. Details of design methods and construction techniques are described and those aspects of soil nailing that will benefit from further study and development are identified.

There is an increasing requirement for mines to meet a certain minimum criteria for sustainability within the context of the physical environment, ecosystem and socio-economic system in which they are located. The mining industry has wrestled to develop methods for assessing the ‘sustainability’ value of a mining project and indicators of ‘sustainability success’. A methodology for the evaluation of sustainability of a mining project using the Multiple Accounts Analysis (MAA) system was developed. The MAA is a platform for engagement of stakeholders and for the assessment of site-specific alternatives based on both qualitative and quantitative indicators of success.

A indústria de máquinas e equipamentos hidráulicos está manufaturando produtos com tolerâncias de ajustes dimensionais cada vez menores, visando o prolongamento da vida útil e o alto rendimento de tais componentes. Nesta perspectiva, é notória a necessidade de identificar as principais fontes de contaminação existentes nos fluidos hidráulicos, a fim de controla-los. A partir da coleta de amostras de um óleo hidráulico que passa por uma filtragem nominal e de um óleo hidráulico que passa por um processo de filtração absoluta, foi realizada a contagem de partículas, análise por fluorescência de raios-x, análise microscópica ótica e análise por microscopia eletrônica de varredura, para estas amostras. Com base nas análises realizadas, foi possível constatar a importância do processo de filtragem absoluta na redução dos níveis de contaminação do óleo hidráulico.

The ability to recognize visual cues commonly associated with roof and rib hazards is fundamental to the prevention of groundfall accidents. The perceptual skills that miners possess to visually search and assess hazardous ground conditions differ considerably. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report summarizes recent investigations on the use of stereoscopic (3-D) slides as a training aid for improving the ability of miners to recognize the various geologic and mining-induced irregularities that cause ground-falls. The feasibility of using 3-D slides for training and their effectiveness for representing roof and rib hazard conditions are discussed. Information is presented on equipment and procedures for creating a 3-D slide program that can be updated by mine trainers. Recommendations are made on selection of 3-D equipment and on the use of 3-D slides for training miners to recognize roof and rib hazards.

A field method combining solvent extraction and paper partition chromatography permits a simple and rapid semiquantitative estimation of gold in siliceous, argillaceous and sulphide ores. The method will facilitate the eyaluation of prospect samples in which the gold is too fine for separation by panning.Ethyl alcohol-hydrobromic acid mixtures are suitable for chromatographic development of the gold complex, and give clear reproducible definition of the gold zone. Substitution of commercial "methylated spirits" for the ethyl alcohol gives equally good definition, improving the potential of the method for field use.A batch of six samples in the range of 0·5 to 5·0 dwt/ton can be completed in two hours. The range may be extended by simple modification to higher or lower values.INTRODUCTIONIn a chromatographic method described previously (Lever 1958, Nevill and Lever 1959), gold from a standard volume of ore clamped between -plate glass was extracted by aqua regia on to the paper. After cautious drying the chromatogram was developed by an ethyl acetate-nitric acid-water mixture and gold was identified by spraying with stannous chloride solution. Sensitivity of the method in the low range was poor. The brown line obtained in the 1-3 dw/j ton range, caused by movement of gold in the reduced form, was not considered to be a satisfactory confirmation of the presence of gold. It was felt that the method would be improved by using a more elegant extraction and applying developing conditions which would produce a well defined purple line at all gold values. Scheelite mineralisation east of the main divide in' the Southern Alps of New Zealand was originally identified by Royden Thompson who is now a geologist with the NZ Geological Survey. This mineralisation was brought to the attention of CRA in 1978. Reconnaissance surveys were carried out in 1979 to delineate the extent of the mineralisation. This was undertaken using ultraviolet light examination of the sediments within the major drainages in the Southern Alps. This defined tentative zones of prospective mineralisation. As a result of this, preliminary reconnaissance, exploration licences were applied for -those areas in which indications of scheelite mineralisation were strongest. A total of 1737 km2 of ground was applied for within four exploration licences. These covered the main Southern Alps mountain chain between the Haast/Wanaka highway and the Mt Cook National Park.

In its industrial days, Hong Kong’s mining industry was thriving, benefitting from the mineral occurrences that are related to the regional Mesozoic igneous and hydrothermal activities.Hong Kong was unique in the mining sector as it was so small in landmass but with such a rich variety of commodities discovered. There are records of commercial exploitation of tungsten, iron, lead, silver, beryl, graphite, quartz, feldspar and kaolin in Hong Kong before 1981. Of these, most of them are located in the New Territories.The Lin Ma Hang lead mine was operated in the 19th century by the Portuguese and was abandoned in 1958. The Needle Hill tungsten deposit was discovered in 1935 during construction of the Jubilee Reservoir. The Ma On Shan iron mine, which operated for 70 years between 1906 and 1976, was the largest mine in the history of Hong Kong. The Mui Wo lead-silver mine on Lantau Island can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty 400 years ago. West Brother Island, which extracted graphite from 1952 to 1973, was levelled in the 1990s to make way for the development of the airport at Chek Lap Kok.Nowadays, these mines are disused and abandoned, but this extended abstract reviews the legacy of the mining industry in Hong Kong to understand the impact that it had on techniques, the economy and culture.CITATION:Chu, J C T and Chan, J S-L, 2015. A series of tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the best means of reducing noise generated by the detonating cord that is utilized for trunklines in quarry blasting. Ten different types of detonating cord were tested and evaluated for their acoustic qualities. The results of the investigation showed that noise levels produced by "low-core-load-per-foot" detonating cord "not covered" were lower than those produced by "high-core-load-per-foot" detonating cord covered with 6 inches of unconsolidated material.

Unverified reports of rare earth element (REE) concentrations in gold placers and radioactive mineral prospects in the Zane Hills were investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines as part of the Alaska critical minerals program. REE is reported to occur in dredge concentrates at the Hogatza mine and up to 1.2 pct REE was previously analyzed in alkalic syenite (bostonite) dikes marginal to the pluton. In addition, numerous thorium-rich veins, explored for their uranium content but unevaluated for REE, occur on the western margin of the Zane Hills. The Bureau mapped and sampled all of the reported or suspected REE occurrences. Dredge concentrates contain abundant uranothorianite, a mineral species which incorporates cerium subgroup REE. Bostonite dikes occur in conjunction with a multi-phased zoned alkalic intrusion, however, no significant REE concentrations were found. Thorium-rich veins contain nil to 0.5 pct Y but resource potential is limited by this relatively low grade, the ultimate low tonnage potential, and the lack of uranium as a major economic element. The Zane Hills exhibit attractive exploration targets for uranium deposits, primarily in a sedimentary form. Gold may be found peripheral to the pluton in both placer and lode deposits. Resource potential of REE, however, appears limited to a placer by-product of REE-Zr-Ti that is recoverable only during large scale gold placer mining. Placer exploration of the lower Wheeler and Dakli Creeks is suggested.
