THE ANTHRACITE region of Pennsylvania contains over nine-tenths of the total anthracite deposits of North America and produces all but an insignificant proportion of the total output of anthracite in the Nation. The whole economy of the northeastern section of the United States depends, to a large extent, on the mining of Pennsylvania anthracite, which is shipped to New Jersey, New York, and New England and is a principal source of energy and heat for that entire region. The responsibility of the Federal Government for developing an engineering method that will prevent inundation of the Pennsylvania anthracite mines and keep them in operation has long been recognized. To obtain a reliable picture of the anthracite-mine-water problem and to solve that problem, it is necessary to have factual data on the volume and the quality and character of the mine water handled by the pumping plants in the anthracite region, as well as the kinds of pumps utilized and problems concerning their operation.

Fine coal refuse is often pumped, as slurry, into surface impoundments as a means of permanent disposal. As the available volume is filled, the height of the embankments are frequently increased. Many times the additional embankment material is placed upon consolidated fine coal refuse. There has been some concern about the long-term effect of consolidation of this material at or above the liquid limit upon its shear strength. A laboratory investigation was performed using three different types of fine coal sluny taken from Central Appalachian coal preparation plants. The refuse was consolidated in 10-foot plexiglass columns under incremental amounts of surcharge loading. The incremental loads were designed to simulate the effect of increasing the height of a refuse embankment on top of the consolidating coal slurry. After the refuse in the columns had consolidated for several months, the columns were cut apart and triaxial tests were performed on both the consolidated material and unconsolidated material for comparison of their shear strength parameters.

"CVRD’s Department of Development and Technology – GETEK has been developing and perfecting a general methodology for scaling up flotation and grinding circuits over several years. This methodology has been applied in several prospective CVRD mining projects. It encompasses a procedure for variability analysis based on bench scale tests, pilot scale grinding and flotation tests and modeling and simulation for scaling up the industrial flowsheet.The bench scale tests include the determination of the Work Index, simplified DWT tests, rougher flotation and locked-cycle tests with samples that are representative of the ore body variability. After completion of these studies, continuous, pilot-scale flotation tests are carried out at a Mini Pilot Plant with drill core samples representative of different stages of the mine life. Finally, studies are carried out with large volume samples using a conventional grinding and flotation pilot plant. This sample is also used for liberation characterization, grinding kinetics, flotation kinetics and industrial circuit scale up. This methodology has been successfully employed in the development of CVRD’s new mining projectINTRODUCTIONCVRD has been developing and perfecting a general methodology for scaling up flotation and grinding circuits over several years. The definition of the processing route and the sizing and scale up of the processing system are some of the products generated during the pre-feasibility of a greenfield project. This paper is focused on the scale up of grinding and flotation circuits, operations known to be of the most importance in a mineral processing plant.The methodology for the definition of the flotation and grinding circuits is divided in the following stages: bench scale ore variability studies, pilot plant operation and modeling followed by simulation. The product of this work is a calibrated simulator that can be utilized for plant operation as well as mine planning, looking to achieve optimal operational conditions.The current models used for scale up of the grinding circuits are aimed at the generating information about the size distribution of the circuit product. However, it is well known that the liberation state of these products may be of critical importance for the performance of the concentration processes downstream. Nevertheless, CVRD has been developing a methodology for liberation kinetics during grinding, aimed at optimizing grinding circuit throughput together with downstream flotation recovery."

Yield pillars have been used for many years to help reduce stresses near mine openings and improve roof and floor stability. A yield pillar is often defined as a pillar that fails but retains residual strength. Stress transfer occurs through the roof and floor after the peak strength of the pillar is reached. High stresses are transferred from around the openings onto abutments that can be barrier pillars or unmined ground. This mechanism, often referred to as pressure arching, is possible as long as the width of yield pillars is less than the critical width above which stresses cannot be carried by the overburden. Significant stress transfer also can occur due to small amounts of pillar and/or floor yielding before the peak strength is reached. This is accomplished in a quasi-elastic manner with little or no visible roof and pillar fracturing or floor heave. Long-term stability may be achieved when stresses and mechanical properties are favorable to pre-failure yielding. This paper gives practical examples where improvements in stability and resource recovery were achieved with this mechanism. Yielding was assessed by comparing measured and calculated vertical pillar stresses. Results indicated that calculated stresses in the pillars were 25 to 40 percent higher than the measured stresses, demonstrating significant arching load transfer to the abutments. Pre-failure yielding is probably often present but unintentional in both development and production areas. Better recognition and use of this mechanism should lead to improved designs as mines become deeper.

The conclusion from the debate over the last decade in the mining sector is that, for grade control, reverse circulation (RC) drill sampling gives more reliable results due to less sampling problems than blasthole samples. However, by conducting the latter with well-controlled procedures there still exist fair possibilities to counteract the major blasthole sampling problems and achieve fit-for-purpose representativeness, especially if based on minimal loss of fines. In the present PhD study, extensive replicate experiments and variographic characterisations are conducted to evaluate the performance of manual blasthole (BH) sampling and sectorial segment sampling. The experiments were performed in Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB)’s Leveäniemi open pit mine in the north of Sweden. The experimental area is an apatite-magnetite iron ore deposit of the Kiruna type, with the demand to exhibit a maximum of local heterogeneity to allow the experiment the largest possible conclusion powers. Gathering and splitting the complete BH drill cutting cones (fines cone, coarse cone) served as an authoritative reference on which to assess the representativity of the two BH sampling methods.Results show that manual BH drill sampling is able to produce samples with an acceptable accuracy and precision if performed properly and with insight. Based on variographic comparison, segment sampling shows similar precision for chemical grades as the manual sampling, while the particle size distributions were more deviating for segment sampling than for manual sampling at the high and low size ranges. Possible reasons for these partly surprising results are discussed.For further investigation of the performance of BH versus RC drill sampling, a second experiment has been planned on a parallel profile. This will result in an unprecedented opportunity for a full variographic comparison between RC and BH sampling, aimed at designing specific, fit-for-purpose sampling procedures as a function of ore quality, cut-off grades and important contaminant levels.CITATION:Engström, K and Esbensen, K H, 2017. Roof warning signals were studied in 18 mines covering 5 coal seams. The results of this study confirmed that roof talk must be interpreted for each individual mine after all other conditions are present that indicate danger of roof fall. Characteristics of roof talk pulses were studied to ascertain features used in interpretation. Roof talk pulse decay time was found to be typically 0.1 to 0.5 seconds depending on the dimensions of the entires. Time between roof talk pulses was found to correlate inversely with the degree of danger under certain conditions. Roof talk and machinery noise recordings obtained during this study were used for subjective tests of ear protectors in a simulated coal mine noise environment. These tests required a detailed interpretation of roof talk and yielded results with high statistical power. Results of these tests showed that the use of personal ear protectors in high noise levels does not degrade a miner's ability to discriminate speech and roof talk. A training course was developed to encourage coal miners to pro-tect their hearing by proper use of personal hearing protectors.

The dry deep mixing method for stabilization of soft soil has been used in the Scandinavian countries for 25 years. The typical application has been stabilization of soft inorganic clay. Today the method is used more frequently in organic soil with good results. The Limix System, introduced in the USA by Hercules Grundläggning AB and TREVIICOS Corporation, is a cost-effective dry deep mixing method used to stabilize most types of soft soil. This paper presents the general principles of stabilizing organic soil with the dry mix method and two case histories of soil stabilization projects in organic soil. Between October 2000 and June 2001 the Limix System was used in England to stabilize soft organic alluvium at the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, Contract 440. During year 2000 the Limix System was used in soft organic soil in Holland near the Groene Hart Tunnel entrance to support trench excavations for slurry walls and concrete barrettes.

There are no producing or developing mines in the study area. The only mineral production was stone from a basalt deposit near Indian View Point. Cinders and sand and gravel have been produced from deposits within 1/2 mi (0.8 km) of the boundary. Stone, sand and gravel, and cinder deposits inside the area are not considered resources because equal or better quality material is found closer to markets. The study area has no known oil and gas, coal, geothermal, or other energy related deposits. However, in 1982 application was filed on 25,000 acres (10,125 ha) of petroleum and on 15,000 acres; (6,0/5 ha) of geothermal leases.

This report gives the results of mineralogical research on the Nicaro (Cuba) nickel ores and plant products. These studies were made under a cooperative agreement with the General Services Administration (GSA) of the U. S. Government. The purpose of the investigation was to obtain fundamental data that would be useful to other GSA contractors concerned with the Nicaro ores in their research on reduction roasting, leaching, and other phases of the project; and to the metallurgical staff of the Nicaro plant in Cuba. The overall objective of the combined research was to provide data to accomplish metallurgical improvement in the operations of the U.S. Government-owned plant at Nicaro, Oriente Province, Cuba. Particular emphasis is placed on improving the recovery of nickel from the ores and on the possibility of recovering other valuable constituents, especially cobalt. This study presents the physical and chemical characteristics, mineral associations, differential thermal analyses in controlled atmospheres, and X-ray studies of the ores and plant products. The nickel ores, serpentine and laterite, were from the Ramona-Lama Mulo and Ramona ore deposits. Serpentine ore consisted of serpentine-group minerals, basic iron oxide, magnetic iron oxides, chromite, olivine, enstatite, anthophyllite, cryptocrystalline quartz, wad, and a trace of calcite. This ore contained 1.6 percent nickel, 0.05 percent cobalt, 0.86 percent chromium, and 17.4 percent iron. Laterite are was composed principally of goethite with some altered serpentine, quartz, chromite, wad, magnetite, maghemite, and hematite. It carried 1.3 percent nickel, 0.11 percent cobalt, 1.9 percent chromium, and 48.4 percent iron.

At Reefton, mesothermal gold deposits occur in the Ordovician Greenland Group basement and bituminous coal deposits occur in overlying Eocene Brunner Coal Measures. These different resource types occur in close proximity to one another in the same topography, vegetation and climate. Both types of resources have been mined for many years and as a result historic mining areas discharge water with chemistry reflecting the mineralogy of the deposits. Coal measures release natural acid rock drainage throughout the region due to oxidation of pyrite in coal and associated sediments. Levels of acidity are increased in mining areas, and pH near three is common. Gold mines contain pyrite, arsenopyrite and stibnite. Discharge waters from these sites have pH near seven because of the high acid neutralising capacity of the basement rocks. Both coal and gold mining sites have iron oxyhydroxide precipitates in drainage waters. These precipitates are more abundant at gold mining sites, and one deposit is up to 5 m thick. Iron oxyhydroxide at coal mine sites contain Zn (up to 89 ppm), Ni (up to 10 ppm), As (up to 163 ppm), Cr (up to 23 ppm), Pb (up to 16), and Cu (up to 11 ppm). Jarosite group minerals have been identified in the coalmine iron oxyhydroxide, although most of the material is amorphous. Gold mine iron oxyhydroxide contains Zn (up to 353 ppm), Ni (up to 592 ppm), Cr (up to 17 ppm), Cu (up to 72 ppm), Pb (up to 29 ppm), Sb (up to 230 ppm), and this material is particularly high in As (up to 20 wt per cent). Most of the material is amorphous but distinctive zones (mm scale) are As rich (up to 30 wt per cent As oxide). Pharmacosiderite, K2Fe4(As04)3 (OH)5.6.3H20, is a secondary mineral in one deposit. These iron oxyhydroxide deposits are useful indicators for the metals mobilised into the environment by oxidation in the historic workings.

The mechanical properties of rock samples of identical lithologicalcomposition may vary significantly due to existence of materialdiscontinuities. Laboratory tests were carried out to determine the effect of material discontinuities on rock sample mechanical properties. The investigations consisted of detecting discontinuities, observing the failure mechanisms during uniaxial compressive strength tests, and analysing of the factors affecting the strength. A non-destructive testing method has been adopted to assist in thedetection of discontinuities. Laboratory testing proved that fractures leading to failures initiated on the detected discontinuities. The location, orientation, size, density and extent of the discontinuities contribute to different modes of failure and these affect the mechanical parameters of rock samples. Four modes of failure were distinguished for hard and brittlecylindrical rock samples. These modes were referred to as simple shear failure, multiple shear failure, multiple fracturing and vertical splitting. To evaluate the effect of discontinuities on mechanical parameters, the ratio of uniaxial compressive to tensile (Brazilian) strength was calculated and analysed for the different modes of failure. It was found that the value of the ratio depended on the mode of sample failure. The lowest value of the ratio was observed for shear mode of failure and the highest for vertical splitting mode of failure.

The investigative work described in this report was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines under a cooperative agreement with the department of mining engineering of the University of Illinois and the Illinois State Geological Survey." The purpose of this agreement was to provide for a comprehensive investigation of coal-mining conditions in the State, with especial reference to the possibility of lessening waste in the mining and preparation of coal and of reducing the dangers to which miners are exposed. The Bureau of Mines paid particular attention to those phases of the investigation that were of general interest from their bearing on safety and efficiency in the coal-mining industry as a whole. Thus, it studied the occurrence of gas (methane) in the mines of the southern part of the State," tested the inflammability of the coal dust from many mines, examined the efficiency of the control of ventilating currents, and investigated the factors affecting the humidity of mine air with respect to their bearing on the occurrence of mine explosions. Following the establishment of the fact that under certain conditions dry bituminous coal dust is inflammable, there arose the problem of finding efficient methods of preventing or limiting coal-dust explosions. Experiments in the gas-and-dust gallery at the Pittsburgh testing station of the Bureau of Mines verified the fact that certain dusts that explode violently when dry are rendered inert by proper humidi- .fication of the atmosphere within the gallery, and the importance of humidity as a factor in limiting the inflammability of coal dust in a mine is demonstrated by the fact that there has never been in Illinois a dust explosion during the summer months, whereas the records show a number of dust explosions during cold weather. It is easy to see that the warm moisture-laden air that enters a mine in the summer must deposit moisture on cooling, whereas the cold and relatively dry air that enters in winter must take up moisture as it becomes heated in traveling through the mine.

Jet grouting has increasingly become a ground improvement technology used to address seepage concerns and provide strength improvement to soils underlying dams. The technique of jet grouting uses high pressure/volume jet fluids to erode existing soil, evacuate some or most of the soil, and mix the remaining cuttings with cement slurry to form soilcrete. While considered a useful technology, this paper discusses some of the problems that can develop while jet grouting in or below a dam with an operational reservoir and seepage condition. Jet grouting experience at Tuttle Creek Dam indicates concerns with respect to ground fracture; spoil return, column diameter consistency, and homogeneity of resulting soilcrete. Recommendations are presented to increase monitoring of downhole parameters during jet grouting to better understand the downhole pressures and soil response during jet grouting.

There has been a strong trend over the past decade in hard rock mines towards the use of very high powered auxiliary (or secondary) fans; in many mines, the installed power for the secondary ventilation system now exceeds that of the primary ventilation system. This also reflects the trend to use two-stage auxiliary fans pushing air into a single ‘trunk’ duct that in turn splits into multiple branches with multiple outlets feeding multiple workplaces. This often produces a poor result in terms of face flows due to the high resistance, high leakage and badly managed duct outlets, as well as high fan capital and operating (power) costs, which in turn also results in a higher cost for the underground power reticulation/distribution systems. This paper explores the reasons why this trend exists and what ventilation practitioners can do to utilise less expensive systems that simultaneously deliver better workplace conditions. "The nickel ores of Sudbury contain substantial amounts of the gangue mineral pyrrhotite (Fe7S&) which causes certain diflculties in the milling of these ores. This paper proposes a process called “magnetoflotation” as an effective means of dealing with pyrrhotite. The method reduces the pyrrhotite content of concentrates by applying a magneticjield on the path product as it leaves the flotation cell.Successful performance of magnetoflotation requires the optimization of several variables. In this study, three of the variables (air flowrate, collector concentration, pother concentration) were investigated by Box- Wilson experimental design, and others (magnet speed, grind size, pulp density, flotation time) were examined individually. The process was tested on a Falconbridge nickel ore, assaying 1.92% Ni, and under the best operating conditions, a concentrate was obtained with 13.56% Ni grade and 74.32% recovery in a single step. Further improvements to grade and recovery were possible by cleaning and scavenging. The same ore was also tested with conventional methods for comparison, and results indicated that magnetoflotation performed better.INTRODUCTION“Magnetoflotation” refers to the process of carrying out magnetic separation and flotation simultaneously within the same device, and is intended to prevent magnetic minerals from reporting to the froth products while non-magnetic minerals are being floated. Typical cases where this method might be beneficial include the processing of magnetite and nickel ores. Its use on magnetite ores has been reported elsewhere [Yalcin, 1992; Yalcin, 19931. This paper describes its application to nickel ores, more specifically to the nickel ore of Falconbridge Limited in Sudbury."

"INTRODUCTION The Bankhead mine of the Cane Creek Coal Mining Co. is in the central part of Walker County, Ala., 4 miles south of Jasper. The Mary Lee bed in this part of the State yields a practically free-burning coal which is marketed as a. steam-raising and domestic fuel. As mined, the coal ordinarily contains ash-forming impurities to an extent that makes it necessary to treat the coal by some washing process before it is marketed. At present the Bank-head coal coarser than 3-1/2 inch is hand-picked and the coal finer than 3-1/2 inch is washed in two single-compartment jigsThis paper contains the result of screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests on a representative sample of the run-of-mine coal and the results of tests made to show the amount of coal liberated from impurities by crushing the coarser sizes. .This report is one of a series on the washability of Alabama coals which is being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with the cooperation of the coal producers of Alabama.SAMPLING AT THE MINE'The Mary Lee bed at Bankhead consists of two benches separated by a rock parting which varies in thickness from place to place in the mine. The top bench has a very uniform thick-nest; throughout the workings and yields about 65.0 per cent of the output. The bottom bench varies greatly in thickness and in nary places becomes too thin to work at a. profit. The sample for the washability study was taken underground at a place which was typical of the mine as a whole. In taking the sample the working face was squared up and a representative section out from each bench. Care was taken to secure a, quantity of coal from each bench proportional to the quantity contributed to the mine output. The rock parting as gobbed in accordance with the usual mining practice. The total sample taken weighed 3 tons."

A study was carried out to compare the environmental impacts of a number of process routes for lead and zinc metal production from sulphide ores using Life Cycle Assessment methodology and based on average industry data derived from the literature. The processes investigated were:blast furnace production of lead; Imperial Smelting Process for lead and zinc production; and electrowinning of zinc with the mining and mineral processing stages common to all three routes. The effect of a number of process variables, namely ore grade, fuel source for electricity generation and efficiency of generation, on the environmental impacts was also examined. The environmental impact categories considered in the study were:total (or full cycle) energy consumption; Global Warming Potential (GWP); and Acidification Potential (AP). The results of the study show that when produced separately, zinc production is more than twice as energy intensive as lead production (viz 48 and 20 MJ/kg respectively), however when produced jointly by the Imperial Smelting process, the energy intensity of the two metals is not all that dissimilar (viz 36 and 32 MJ/kg respectively). The metal production and refining stage was found to make the greatest contribution to the overall environmental impacts for all three processes. The study also highlighted the importance of taking a life cycle approach when comparing the environmental impacts of different processes.

Coal’s one-fifth share of the nation’s energy consumption is nearly as high as that of natural gas. Coal is the electric utility sector’s principal fuel supplier. It accounts for about55% of the electricity generated at power stations.
