Devido à carência de tarugos de alumínio 6060 com boa qualidade e baixo custo de produção no mercado de extrusão do Brasil, surge a necessidade de encontrar soluções práticas que resultem em um melhor desempenho das ligas na indústria da extrusão. Este trabalho, portanto, tem o objetivo de estudar a influência do tratamento térmico de homogeneização e da taxa de resfriamento pós-tratamento na microestrutura de uma liga de alumínio 6060, assim como as suas implicações na indústria de extrusão. Tarugos cilíndricos da liga de alumínio 6060, com diâmetro de sete polegadas, foram fabricados e submetidos a diferentes ciclos de tratamentos térmicos em um forno industrial do tipo bambury com a finalidade de dissolver e homogeneizar as partículas de segunda fase na matriz de alumínio. As variáveis de tratamento térmico investigadas neste estudo foram o tempo de residência e a taxa de resfriamento. Os tarugos termicamente tratados foram, em seguida, amostrados para caracterização microestrutural e para a execução de testes industriais de extrusão. Os resultados obtidos indicaram que existe uma significativa diferença microestrutural entre as amostras, que consistiu principalmente na variação das frações de precipitados de Mg2Si na matriz. Foi possível concluir que a produtividade na extrusão depende fortemente da fração desses precipitados.

A carefully designed and controlled in-place destruction experiment was performed on a concrete bunker buried in 4.27 m (14 ft.) of soil. The objective was to determine if the explosive charges would collapse the structure in-place without requiring mechanical excavation. Collapse of the buried structure was first attempted by drilling holes in the soil and placing four 13.38 Kg (29.5 lb) Comp B explosive charges at a depth of 2.13 m (6.7 ft.). The configuration of the charges when detonated was 2.13 m (6.7 ft.) off the top of the concrete roof and 3.66 m (12 ft.) apart in a square pattern. Detonation of these charges created a crater ~4.88 m (16 ft.) in diameter and 2.13 m (6.7 ft.) deep, leaving ~2.13 m (6.7 ft.) of soil covering. Very limited spalling occurred on the ceiling of the concrete structure as a result of detonating these four charges. The second attempt to collapse the structure consisted of placing another single 13.38 Kg (29.5 lb) charge, identical to the first four, near the geometrical center of the bunker roof. This charge was detonated in the soil cover 100 to 200 mm (4 to 8 in.) above the reinforced concrete roof, collapsing it. Due to the collapsed roof and remaining soil cover, the structure had been collapsed in place, requiring no further demolition.

We studied mineralogical characteristics of the vermiculite samples from seven mines in China. We found three types of interstratified structures in the investigated samples: 1:1 regular interstratified structure, segregated interstratified structure, and random interstratified structure. The vermiculite samples from six mines are mainly composed of phlogopite?vermiculite interstratified minerals, and the samples from the other mine are composed of chlorite?vermiculite interstratified mineral. The samples with phlogopite?vermiculite structure have high contents of K2O, TiO2 and Na2O. The samples with chlorite?vermiculite structure have the highest contents of MgO and Al2O3. The cation exchange capacity of the samples is 17.3?99.0 mmol/100g.The exchangeable cations of phlogopite?vermiculite samples from Weili Mine mainly include Na+ and Ca2+, while those of phlogopite?vermiculite samples from Tongguan Mine mainly include Mg2+ and Ca2+. The thermal expansion ratio of the samples is between 9 and 32. The exfoliated vermiculite products from Weili Mine have the best mechanical strength.

A massive cobalt-containing pyrite orebody occurs in banded albite-quartz-biotite rocks at Thackaringa, some 30 km SW of Broken Hill. Because of the world-wide shortage of cobalt during the late 1970s, serious consideration was given to the development of a suitable flow-sheet to recover the cobalt from this ore. Details of a pressure leaching process in which more than 90 per cent of the cobalt is extracted from a pyrite concentrate are presented.

The Toulon tunnel project is a key component of the Highway corridor on the French Riviera between Marseille and Nice and is a fundamental transportation infrastructure for the region. The first design studies started in the 1960?s. The tunnel project is made of 2 separate tunnels: South and North tunnel. The North tunnel was built between 1992 and 2002 after 10 years of difficult construction (for example, on March 15th, 1996, a collapse of the tunnel in the ?Marchand Area? generated a sink hole in the city Center, causing 20 months delay). The South tunnel alignment runs parallel to the North tunnel at the same depth below Toulon historical downtown (20 to 40m depth with some areas with less than 10m of cover). The Risk management program was studied to be a State of the Art program in urban tunneling construction. The Hydro Geological Context The whole project area is covered with backfills and colluviums of 1 to 4m thick. The Schist, marls and sandstones, randomly distributed along the alignment below the first layer have different characteristics. While the Schist are pretty compact, the marls are fractured. The other layers have very different characteristics, and many faults are located along the alignment, especially in the limestones. The Breccia are heavily decompressed and deformable, as well as the other soils located in the Marchand Area. This 80m long area is where the settlements need to be controlled with an extensive monitoring program. The complete Geological profile is presented in Figure 1. [ ]

"The Red Chris Cu-Au deposit (522.7 Mt at 0.35% Cu and 0.27 g/t Au), northwestern British Columbia, is one of several pre-accretionary porphyry systems in the Cordillera of westernCanada. It is hosted by an Early Jurassic hornblende monzonite to quartz monzodiorite porphyry which forms part of a suite of dikes and stocks that intrude Late Triassic volcanic strata. Major and trace element chemical data suggest that these Early Jurassic intrusions have compositions which fall on the boundary between alkalic and calc-alkalic compositions. Alteration and mineralization in the Red Chris deposit are more typical of calc-alkaline porphyry systems with abundant potassic, sericitic and argillic assemblages and quartz-rich stockworks. It lacks Na- and Ca-bearing silicate assemblages which characterize the alkalic porphyry deposits of British Columbia. One of the more unusual features of the deposit is the abundance of carbonate alteration and veins which occur throughout the hydrothermal history of the deposit. This type of alteration and veining is more typical of alkalic porphyry deposits.The composition of the carbonates vary both temporally and spatially with different alteration zones. Potassic zones, which are characterized by orthoclase±albite±quartz±chalcopyrite±bor-nite±magnetite±hematite and Au/Cu ratios of 1:1 (g/t Au:% Cu), contain minor siderite veins and alteration. Quartz-sericite-carbonate (QSC) zones overprint earlier potassic alteration and comprisequartz+ankerite+sericite+pyrite+chalcopyrite with Au/Cu ratios of 0.5:1 (g/t Au:% Cu). Ankerite isthe main carbonate in this stage but has a variable composition with a more Fe-rich variety associated with mineralized veins. Localized chlorite-carbonate alteration zones, characterized by chlorite+carbonate+quartz±kaolinite±pyrite±gypsum and high Au/Cu ratios [2 to 3.5:1; (g/t Au:% Cu)],contain predominantly calcite. Late stage carbonate-gypsum veins have an ankerite to dolomite com-position which is very similar to the regional carbonate alteration and veins."

High chromium white irons can be formulated to provide required combinations of abrasion and erosion wear resistance, toughness and capability to withstand corrosion attack. As a consequence, they are used widely in casting form throughout the mining/mineral processing industry, particularly as components for slurry pumps and also as mill and crusher liners, laminated wear plates in chutes and hoppers and in valves, nozzles and cyclones. Traditional cast chromium molybdenum and high chromium white irons for wear applications are covered in ASTM A532 Classes 11 and 111 and are also available as comparable proprietary alloys. They rely on heat-treated, hypoeutectic microstructures containing a high volume fraction of very hard eutectic/secondary metal carbides and martensite to provide extremely high wear resistance. The ability to increase the carbide volume fraction and hence achieve higher wear resistance, has been limited because of severe casting difficulties encountered when carbon and chromium contents are raised and hypereutectic alloys with structures also containing coarse acicular primary metal carbides are produced. The limitation has been overcome and cast hypereutectic chromium white iron pump components have established themselves in a wide variety of mineral processing service applications. Comparisons will be made between the microstructures and wear test performance data for the various alloy types and details will be provided of the service performance improvements that have been achieved through the use of hypereutectic chromium white irons.

The three thousand foot long 66-inch diameter Folsom East Interceptor Section2B was completed accident free, on time and under budget with no measurable surface settlement. The tunnel passed through nested cobbles, highly abrasive sands and gravels, and abandoned mine workings with less than five-feet of cover at times. Preventing settlement was critical since the tunnel passed under a heavily traveled state highway. A pilot project to test microtunneling and pipejacking methods in the same ground conditions abandoned both drives before completing the planned drive lengths. This paper discusses performance of the conventional tunneling method selected to excavate the ground and the effectiveness of the ground modification techniques employed.

THIS investigation was carried on by means of models and the applica-tion of the principles of similitude to determine the effects of props, props and cribs and sand filling in longwall mining. The geologic structure and rate of face retreat were kept constant and the only change introduced was in the method of support. It is not felt necessary to repeat a description of apparatus, or to explain the fact that a scalar model made in all parts of the same material as the prototype will behave similarly to the prototype when rotated at speeds such that the centrifugal force is as many times the gravitational force as the prototype dimension is a similar linear model dimensions. The reader is referred to earlier papers1,2 for further information regarding these statements. All models were made of sandstone and were as in Fig. 6. They are composed of a 3/16-in. ore body bed A, overlain by a 3/16-in- bed B, a 3/8-in, bed C and two 1/8 -in. beds D and E. The model was rotated at ±2350 r.p.m. equivalent to a model ratio of 1268. It was worked back 1/4 in. at a time before being replaced in the centrifuge and again rotated. Table 1 gives model and prototype dimensions occurring in this discussion, the prototype dimensions being 1268 times the model dimensions. Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 were taken while the model was rotating at 2350 r.p.m. One was taken for each face retreat of 26.4 ft., but for obvious ,reasons all are not presented. Fig. 1 (A-E) shows the behavior of this type of structure with face retreats of 26.4 ft, and no artificial support. Fig. 2(A-E) shows the behavior of this type of structure where breaker and face props were used. Deep-sea mineral SMS deposits present some of the world’s most challenging conditions for drilling equipment. As robotic seabed drilling services mature so too the ways that clients engage with service providers to maximise their data requirements. This presentation reviews key considerations for planning and executing a successful seabeddrilling program in variable mineralised deposits. Some of the means of collaboration between robotic seabed drilling contractors and those hiring their services are explored; where improved efficiencies and recoveries over the period of a drilling programme could be achieved. Potentially new technology or methodology can be looked at to further improve these approaches.

Land rehabilitation at Golden Cross is reviewed, 8 years after mine closure in 1997/98, from the perspectives of a Peer Reviewer (land rehabilitation) and a Regional Council Officer (Resource Consents compliance). Land rehabilitation items we discuss include: management of restored pastures, native plantings (on-site riparian and block plantings and off-site environmental riparian enhancement plantings), wetlands (on-site tailings lake and sediment ponds littoral zone plantings, and basement of the open pit; and off-site wetlands enhancement plantings), pine plantations on-site and on surrounding land, stabilization of the Tailings Lake Embankment (landslide) and Open Pit capping, capping of acid-mine-rock, stability of discharge channels, buildings and amenities, public access for recreation, educational uses, and future management of the site. Pest control has helped to conserve the rare and endangered HochstetterÆs (Leiopelma hochstetteri) and ArcheyÆs (L. archeyi) frogs, and a regionally significant stand of rare swamp maire (Syzygium maire) has been conserved and fenced.

PREVIOUSLY I have dealt with the methods of separating silver from copper. There now remains the portion which treats of solidified juices ; and whereas they might be considered as alien to things metallic, nevertheless, the reasons why they should not be separated from it I have explained in the second book. Solidified juices are either prepared from waters in which nature or art has infused them, or they are produced from the liquid juices themselves, or from stony minerals. Sagacious people, at first observing the waters of some lakes to be naturally full of juices which thickened on being dried up by the heat of the sun and thus became solidified juices, drew such waters into other places, or diverted them into low-lying places adjoining hills, so that the heat of the sun should likewise cause them to condense. Subsequently, because they observed that in this wise the solidified juices could be made only in summer, and then not in all countries, but only in hot and temperate regions in which it seldom rains in summer, they boiled them in vessels over a fire until they began to thicken. In this manner, at all times of the year, in all regions, even the coldest, solidified juices could be obtained from solutions of such juices, whether made by nature or by art. Afterward, when they saw juices drip from some roasted stones, they cooked these in pots in order to obtain solidified juices in this wise also. It is worth the trouble to learn the pro- portions and the methods by which these are made. I will therefore began with salt, which is made from water either salty by nature, or by the labour of man, or else from a solution of salt, or from lye, likewise salty. Water which is salty by nature, is condensed and converted into salt in salt-pits by the heat of the sun, or else by the heat of a fire in pans or pts or trenches. That which is made salty by art, is also condensed by fire and changed into salt. There should be as many salt-pits dug as the circumstance of the place permits, but there should not be more made than can be used, although we ought to make as much salt as we can sell. The depth of salt-pits should be moderate, and the bottom should be level, so that all the water is evaporated from the salt by the heat of the sun. The salt-pits should first be encrusted with salt, so that they may not suck up the water. The method of pouring or leading sea-water into salt-pits is very old, and is still in use in many places. The method is not less old, but less common, to pour well-water into salt-pits, as was done in Babylon, for which Pliny is the authority, and in Cappadocia, where they used not only well-water, but also spring-water. A continued exploration programme has further defined the geology of the Tolukuma vein system, verified the resource indicated by Newmont, and identified potential for additional mineralisation. The resource at Tolukuma Hill, designated as zone C, is a mine recoverable 432,000 t at 18.1 g/t Au & 46 g/t Ag. Mining will be by a combination of open pit and underground at a rate of 100,000 t per annum. Processing will be by SAG mill, gravity circuit and CIL plant. A diatreme breccia, localised at an intersection of structures and a relationship of gold to base metal sulphides, are indicative of a strong porphyry association. Typical epithermal features such as crustiform banded quartz and quartz pseudomorphing platy calcite are also present and locally contain lesser gold mineralisation. Pre-existing dilatant structures have acted as a host to the ore fluids, resulting in the formation of the semi-continuous Tolukuma-Gulbadi veins over a 1100 m strike. A fluid flow model suggests that mineralizing fluids were sourced from a diatreme margin and migrated laterally along dilatant structures. Bonanza gold grades are interpreted to be derived through fluid quenching in the flexure between a hanging wall split, which hosts much of the Tolukuma Hill resource, and the feeder graben structure. Thus, the relationship between the pre-mineral structural geometry and fluid upflow at the margins of a diatreme breccia, controls the ore setting.

"Cameco's McArthur River is the world's largest high grade uranium mine. Production started in late 1999. Cameco carried out the engineering design and construction management for the McArthur River project, including all aspects of mining, ore handling and ore transportation. The ore composition was expected to vary dramatically (0 to 30% U3O8; 0 to 25% clay; etc). To cope with the composition swings, sizing screens were selected to provide classification in the grinding circuit. The grinding circuit started up close to the design to provide minus 500 micron slurry. The 50% solids (wt) ground ore slurry proved to be difficult to transport to and process at the Key Lake Mill. Slurry containing high concentrations of high density pitchblende (about spgr 8.0) and low concentration of stabilizing clays, would settle in containers. Ore transport efficiency to Key Lake was found to be unacceptable.A test classification cyclone was installed in the grinding circuit at McArthur River early in 2002. The cyclone operating parameters were not typical, but the cyclone was made to work very successfully. Transportation efficiency to Key Lake increased due to more stable slurry. Preferentially ground (fine) pitchblende particles were easier to leach at Key Lake. The radiation exposure for operators and maintenance personnel to handle the more stable slurry was also reduced.The classification sizing screens were removed from the McArthur River grinding circuit and replaced by permanent classification cyclones late in 2002.INTRODUCTIONThe McArthur River mine and Key Lake mill operations are located in northern Saskatchewan, approximately 650 and 720 kilometres from Saskatoon, respectively. Figure 1 is a location map. McArthur River is the world's largest, high-grade uranium mine, with a production capacity of 18.7 million pounds U3O8 annually. (Rosner and Edwards 1998, Dyck 2000, Jamrozek 2000, Rodgers 2001) Proven and probable reserves are more than 473 million pounds U3O8. McArthur River ore, grading on average 21% U3O8, is milled at Cameco's Key Lake operation, 80 kilometres southwest by road. McArthur River production began in December 1999."

Recent exploration for mesothermal gold deposits in the Otago Schist has focussed largely on extensions of, or analogies to, the reverse fault-hosted Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone deposit. Abundant normal fault-hosted mesothermal and epithermal vein deposits in the Otago Schist have attracted less attention, largely because they have limited lateral extent and steeper dips. Northwest-striking normal fault-hosted vein sets near Barewood and Hindon in east Otago crosscut schist foliation on the Barewood-Hindon plateau at a high angle along a combined strike length in excess of 20 kilometres. The trend of the vein sets is not linear, but rather contains several right lateral steps. Almost all veins dip steeply to the northeast. Angular discordance between schist foliation and the plateau surface along the trend increases from near zero at the northwest end of the veins to about 30¦ at the southeast end. Support design in jointed or blocky rock masses is often approached by the use of either 'rules of thumb', rock mass classification systems such as the Q-system (Barton, Lien and Lunde, 1974) or RMR (Bieniawski, 1973) or conventional wedge analysis. Generally, this requires that a number of key simplifying assumptions are made and the support system is designed to cater for either a mean, most likely, or worst case scenario depending on the risk tolerance. The design block size is often a major uncertainty and often a worst case block size based on excavation span is used. Thompson and Windsor (2007) state that it is inappropriate to base support designs on the excavation size as these size blocks rarely occur if discontinuity trace lengths are considered. Probabilistic keyblock methods can be used to determine the most likely design block sizes. A methodology is presented whereby JBlock software (Estherhuizen, 1996) is used to estimate potential block sizes as part of the support design process. Using information such as the spacing, orientation and length of discontinuities, it is possible to simulate blocks in the walls of an excavation (Esterhuizen and Streuders, 1998). Keyblock analysis methods (Goodman and Shi, 1985) are used to evaluate whether blocks are removable and whether the chosen support will be sufficient to ensure stability. Data from two mines is used to demonstrate how probabilistic keyblock analyses can be used in support design. Discontinuity data was used to generate 10 000 removable blocks and the design block size statistics were determined. For one mine this information was used to scale blocks in a conventional. Unwedge analysis whilst for the other mine, the point estimate method (Harr, 1987) was applied. The choice of appropriate design acceptance criteria in terms of factor of safety and probability of failure is also considered.

THIS IS a progress report on a study of the application of statistical practice to mine and mineral sampling undertaken by the Federal Bureau of Mines to provide sound theoretical and practical data for use of the mineral engineering professions. One of the problems in mine sampling is determining the reliability of the results. For certain types of sampling data (random data) the reliability of the results can be stated mathematically. For other types of data there is no known means of quantitatively expressing reliability. In applying measures of reliability to a set of random data, some knowledge or assumption of the characteristics of the particular data is necessary. In many fields these characteristics are well known. However, in mining, where the data are in assays, these characteristics are not well known.

Tunnel contracts in New York have in recent years had few bidders with the bids received being much higher than anticipated. Since 9/11, security has become a key issue in planning key infrastructure projects in New York. This is especially true in the case of large water supply tunnels. Striking the right balance between cost and security was the major factor in determining the best configurationfor the Kensico-City Tunnel. This paper outlines the efforts made to determine realistic probable bid costs for the tunnel contracts, and the innovative approaches taken to deal with security issues.

A geologic investigation of mineral resources in South Carolina first began in 1825 when the General Assembly authorized Lardner Vanuxen to conduct a "Geological and Mineralogical Survey of South Carolina." Vanuxen, South Carolina's first State Geologist, reported in 1826 on the limestones (marble) of the Piedmont which during those early years, were burned in many shall, scattered kilns in the region wherever suitable raw material was available. He also mentioned the possibility of using marl from the Atlantic Coastal Plain province for direct application and enrichment to the soil. Since before the year 1844 industrial minerals in South Carolina have been commercially produced literally from A to Z, asbestos to zircon. The first pub¬lished reports of actual commercial production, not just an occurrence, are referenced in Table 1 for 33 known industrial minerals and rocks in South Carolina. Known or suspected occurrences of undeveloped non-metallic mineral resources in South Carolina await future verification by geologic mapping, sampling (including coring), possible beneficiation, and market analysis. These industrial minerals and rocks include, but are not limited to, special, clay minerals (e.g. bentonitic clays, zeolites and others), sillimanite, argillite (lightweight aggregate), kaolin (alumina) and marl (underground storage and tunneling medium). In addition other non-metallic minerals, once mined but still worthy of reconsideration, include topaz (industrial), heavy minerals, barite, feldspar, and monazite. Finally, possibilities for new reserves, as an expansion of existing mine output, might develop for fuller's earth, limestone (lime), sericite (finely divided mica), vermiculite, kaolin (paper coating and filling, other filler), and metallurgical gravel. Official South Carolina data from the U. S. Bureau of Mines for 1974 indicated a total value of mineral production of $105.2 million.
